Prosecco In the last few years the UK and many other parts of the world have ‘discovered’ Prosecco – the Italian answer to Champagne. The UK increased its Prosecco consumption by 48% between 2014 and 2015 and is now the lead export market, with Britons now buying one fifth of Prosecco produced. Champagne sales increased just 1%, while sales in the wine sector as a whole grew just 0.4%. The UK, US and Germany together account for three quarters of all the Prosecco produced annually. Of the 70% exported, 35% goes to the UK, a bigger share than the 30% that stays in Italy. Earlier this year there was a scare about an impending global Prosecco shortage, with the ‘crisis’ being resolved by a bumper crop in the Prosecco growing area of Italy (in the Veneto region – northeast Italy) announced in May. So why is it suddenly so popular? Many cite its cost – prices are generally much lower than the major Champagne labels. But it is arguably a much less ‘challenging’ experience enjoying Prosecco, as its taste is so simple. Prosecco is made in a less complex process (which is why it is less expensive), resulting in a less complex wine. In Champagne second fermentation takes place in the bottle that you buy. But in the case of Prosecco it’s made in a large tank. 6
And the result is a marked difference in the style of flavours. Champagne can be very complex, with tastes not easily identifiable, whereas the soft, fruity flavours of Prosecco – white peaches, pears, apples – result in a simpler, more approachable style of wine. Prosecco is easy to drink, and though it is certainly appropriate as an aperitif on both casual and more formal occasions, Prosecco does not invite the ‘compare the label’ ‘attitude that Champagne sometimes does. It is a welcoming wine – the type of drink to enjoy with good friends rather than trying to impress, though impress it does….

AT THE MOVIES Films to look out for in the coming months.
What Men Want In theatres Feb 8th, 2019. STORYLINE Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) is a successful sports agent who's constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man's world... until she gains the ability to hear men's thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test. INFORMATION What Men Want is a 2019 American fantasy romantic comedy film directed by Adam Shankman and starring Taraji P. Henson, Aldis Hodge, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Tracy Morgan.
8
A loose remake to the 2000 film What Women Want, *starring Mel Gibson) the plot follows a woman who, after drinking a potent concoction given by a shaman, gains the ability to hear men's inner thoughts. The film was released in the United States on February 8, 2019, by Paramount Pictures. It has grossed over $67 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Henson's performance but said the film was too safe and offered little new to the genre beyond the genderswitching aspect. Overall, the critics slammed this movie and personal reviews will tell you not to waste your money and be prepared for some very crass scenes and bad language to boot. Obviously, everyone has their opinion so why not judge for yourself.

N332 Driving in Spain
the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.
Driving in the Rain Weather conditions pose the biggest risk to road users, partly due to the inexperience and lack of preparedness by drivers, and partly due to the changing dynamics of the road and driving environment. In preparation, here are N332's top tips for dealing with rain. 1. Slow Down It might seem like the most obvious thing to say, but all too often it is advice that is ignored. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security within our vehicles but speed and adverse weather is a deadly combination. When the road is wet, your vehicle´s tyres cannot grip the road as much as in normal, dry conditions. Cornering and braking are all affected by water on the road, reducing grip and increasing stopping distances considerably, therefore, slowing down allows more time to adapt and deal with the situation. Ease off the accelerator a little and you will see the difference immediately. 2. Avoid violent movements or sharp braking Sudden braking, acceleration or harsh movements of the steering wheel may result in loss of vehicle control. If the operations are carried out progressively, smoothly and slowly, it also gives other drivers more time to react. Remember that a smooth drive is a safer and more efficient ride under normal conditions and even more so when it rains. 3. Avoid driving on road markings Road markings including lane lines, crossings and markers provide less grip that the road surface and can therefore increase braking distances. Riders on two wheels should be particularly aware of this problem.
4. Be Seen During rain or reduced visibility make sure that you have your lights on. Daytime Running Lights may not be sufficient, especially during reduced visibility where headlights must be used. The timely use of indicators, including brake lights, is crucial to give other road users advanced warnings of your intentions. Keeping your vehicle under control and following all the advice for a smooth ride will also allow for an improvement in your visibility to other road users. 5. Avoid aquaplaning risks Keep a sharp lookout for puddles and pools of water which may reduce the grip of your tyres on the road even more, potentially creating a liquid barrier between the tyre and road surface, commonly referred to as aquaplaning. However, don´t carry out any sudden movements to avoid these puddles, simply slow down, hold the steering wheel firmly and try to keep your vehicle on a straight and level course. Whilst maintaining an adequate distance from the vehicle in front, it is often beneficial to follow vehicles through such areas as the displacement of water becomes easier. With these five basic tips your journey through the rain should be a much safer one, but remember that it is not only about how you drive your vehicle, but about the vehicle itself. Proper maintenance is crucial, checking tyres and their pressure, lights, windows, brakes and other such features on a regular basis should also reduce the risk. If in doubt, your local garage can keep a check on these for you.

THINGS TO DO & places to see...
Galicia
Galicia is located in the green and lush north western corner of Spain. Geographically, Galicia is situated just above Portugal and faces both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mar Cantabrico. This part of the country has an economy based on fishing, farming, agriculture and increasingly tourism.
BACKGROUND
Galicia also has a climate offering four separate seasons and is actually pronounced "Galithia" (the "ci" pronounced as "th" in spanish). Whilst a part of the mainland, Galicia is an autonomous community with a cultural heritage, climate and geography that are distinct from the rest of Spain. Although the region's history and scenery are often promoted as the areas main vacation attractions, beautiful beaches fill the "rias" (bays) of three of the four provinces in Galicia and the scent of pine and eucalyptus are ever present.
Why holiday in Galicia
Galicia, and in particular the towns close to "Santiago de Compostela" and its airport, have become increasingly popular with British and American holiday makers over recent years. This part of the Iberian Peninsula offers a taste of "real" Spanish culture, taking you away from the tourist frequented Costa's and into a greener and more culturally defined part of the country. Here you can escape the commercialism that has tainted so many other European holiday destinations and explore a region rich in history, tradition, culture and architecture. In terms of getting to Galicia, "Santiago de Compostela", the provincial capitol of "la Coruna" and Vigo (in Pontevedra) all benefit from International airports.
What makes Galicia different
Galicia is frequently described as green Spain, a result of its temperate climate and elevated rain fall, at least when compared to the resorts of Spain's hotter South. 16
The landscape of Galicia is lush, mountainous and peppered with forests of pine and eucalyptus, but just like the rest of the Iberian regions it has a high level of autonomy and provincial self determination. This ensures that whilst the population are Spanish, they see themselves primarily as "Gallegos" - so when the Galicians talk about nationalism, they are generally referring to the "nation of Galicia", rather than the nation of Spain! To a tourist, the biggest difference between Galicia and the more commonly visited southern Spanish resorts will be the landscape and climate. Firstly, the predominant colour of the landscape is green, and not the parched or burnt green you see in the Southern parts of Spain. The scenery varies between the hills and fells found in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District (England) and the more mountainous vistas found in the Scottish highlands. A CoruĂąa Town Hall
A further Celtic connection is the traditional instrument of Galicia known as the gaita, it is similar to the bagpipes in sound and appearance.
Galicia's climate and economy
The north of Spain has an average rain fall comparable with that found in the UK and France and four distinct seasons, although with what most would view as an extended summer. This temperate climate, combined with the hundreds of kilometers of coastline, have resulted in a dual economy of farming and fishing. Much of the local fishing is however shellfish and crustaceans for which the region is internationally renowned. The traditional vegetable of Galicia is the potato, although the most visible crop you will see in the fields is sweet corn.
Galicia: Sea and Land
Its cuisine is one of the main tourist attractions of Galicia: the exquisite delicacies of this region are based on the high quality and variety of the local products used in the preparation of dishes. Country, farm and sea products are unique in their characteristics and quality. Furthermore, it cannot be forgotten that one of the main pillars of Galician cooking is the professionalism of its experts. Galician chefs are found world-wide. The importance of its gastronomy is manifested at the more than 300 gastronomic fiestas which are held in Galicia throughout the year. The origins of these exaltations to local produce, which arouse much interest in visitors, lie in the many local and regional traditional fiestas held during harvest time or religious holidays, such as the "romerĂas", where promises are made to the patron saint and then completed with a traditional meal. Some of these fiestas attract great crowds and have been recognised as of national tourist interest. EMPANADA: The dish, which must be one of the most versatile that has ever existed, that unites interior Galicia with its coast is called "empanada" (filled pastries). "Empanada" can be stuffed with pork rib, meat, pork loin, beef loin, sardines, octopus, cod with raisins, bonito‌almost anything you can imagine.

QUITE INTERESTING fun facts and figures...
some stuff about
SPACE With the recent scientific breakthrough of imaging a black hole in space... ...we thought we'd bring you some other fascinating facts and figures that relate to space & the universe so you can keep your coffee table chit chat topical and interesting.
Space is completely silent. There is no atmosphere in space, which means that sound has no medium or way to travel to be heard. The hottest planet in our solar system is 450° C. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system and has an average surface temperature of around 450° C. Interestingly, Venus is not the closest planet to the Sun – Mercury is closer but because Mercury has no atmosphere to regulate temperature it has a very large temperature fluctuation.
The footprints on the Moon will be there for millions of years. The Moon has no atmosphere, which means there is no wind to erode the surface and no water to wash the footprints away. This means the footprints of the Apollo astronauts, along with spacecraft prints, rover-prints and discarded material, will be there for millions of years. One day on Venus is longer than one year. Venus has a slow axis rotation which takes 243 Earth days to complete its day. The orbit of Venus around the Sun is 225 Earth days, making a year on Venus 18 days less than a day on Venus.
Nobody knows how many stars are in space. The sheer size of space makes it impossible to accurately predict just how many stars we have. Right now, scientists and astronomers use the number of stars only within our galaxy, The Milky Way, to estimate. That number is between 200-400 billion stars and there are estimated to be billions of galaxies so the stars in space really are completely uncountable.
There is floating water in space. Astronomers have found a massive water vapour cloud which holds 140 trillion times the mass of water in the Earth’s oceans somewhere around 10 billion light years away – making it the largest discovery of water ever found.
Halleys Comet won’t orbit past US again until 2061. Discovered in 1705 by Edmond Halley, the famous comet was last seen in 1986 and is only seen once every 75 to 76 years.
The largest known asteroid is 965 km (600 mi) wide. Discovered by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801, the dwarf planet Ceres was the first, and largest, object to be considered an asteroid. It is located in the Asteroid Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and accounts for 33% of the entire belt’s mass.
A full NASA space suit costs $12,000,000. While the entire suit costs a cool $12m, 70% of that cost is for the backpack and control module. Neutron stars can spin 600 times per second. Neutron stars are the densest and tiniest stars in the known universe and although they only have a radius of about 10 km (6 mi), they may have a mass of a few times that of the Sun. They can rotate at up to 60 times per second after they are born from a core-collapse supernova star explosion and have been known to spin as fast as 600-712 times per second because of their physics. There may be a planet made out of diamonds. As space facts go, this is pretty impressive. Research by Yale University scientists suggests that a rocky planet called 55 Cancrie — which has a radius twice Earth’s, and a mass eight times greater – may have a surface made up of graphite and diamond. It’s 40 light years away but visible to the naked eye in the constellation of Cancer. 20
our Moon was once a piece of the Earth. The theory is that when Earth was a relatively young planet, it was struck by a giant object and this collision broke a piece of the Earth away to create the moon. This piece then began to orbit the Earth as a result of its gravitational pull. The Sun’s mass takes up 99.86% of the solar system. Made of three quarters hydrogen and helium for most of its remaining mass, the Sun accounts for 99.86% of the mass in our solar system with a mass of around 330,000 times that of Earth. There is a volcano on Mars three times the size of Everest. At 600 km wide and 21 km high, Olympus Mons is a volcano on Mars that may still be active, according to scientists. It is the tallest peak of any planet. However, the Rheasilvia central peak on the asteroid Vesta is taller at 22 km.

BOOK SHELF Featured good reads or references...
Alexander Kennedy is a biography and history book brand owned by Fritzen Publishing LLC. Their team's mission is to help educate and entertain readers with amazing stories. Napoleon: The Rise of an Empire (The True Story of Napoleon Bonaparte)
Jack the Ripper: From London to Hell (The True Story of Jack the Ripper)
The most polarizing man of his era, Napoleon Bonaparte has remained a source of controversy ever since. Did his dictatorship crush the French Revolution, or carry its ideals to their logical conclusion?
He was his era’s most wanted man, leaving behind him a string of mutilated victims that terrified the world.
Was he a conqueror-tyrant who sought war for the sake of glory, or was he forced into conflict to defend his beloved France? Was he a throwback to sixteenth-century “absolute monarchs,” or the great modernizer of nineteenthcentury Europe? Or was he all of these things at once?
Yet despite a wealth of tantalizing evidence—eyewitnesses who saw him with his victims, his taunting letters to police, and forensic evidence gathered from the dead—he has never been conclusively unmasked.
Genghis Khan: The Flail of God (The True Story of Genghis Khan) He was one of history’s greatest conquerors, and in his day, his name was a byword for terror. His forces burned great cities to the ground and slaughtered on a scale that verged on genocide. Yet there was also another side to Genghis Khan; he modernized the laws and customs of his people and unified much of Eurasia, furthering the trade and cultural exchange of the Great Silk Road. For these accomplishments, he is today celebrated as the greatest hero of the Mongolian people.

HAPPINESS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
LOVE TO ALL
One of the hardest changes to make is sending love to all. Picture yourself standing in a cue when someone cuts in front of you, or when you are waiting for a special cake to be made for a function and they cancel at the last minute. There are so many times anger builds up inside of us and what do we do? We let this anger spoil our day. Getting outside and making a conscious effort to notice all the details of the World around you will not only increase your zest for life, but also fill your lungs full of feel good oxygen to get you feeling fabulous. Whether you are walking the dog or sitting by the river, just take a moment to appreciate every sight, sound and smell.
GRATITUDE
When we are grateful and remind ourselves of all the things we already have in our lives to be thankful for, it leaves little time for thoughts of negativity and fear. Make a gratitude journal and make a note every day of all the things you have to be thankful for.
28
Instead of letting someone else ruin your good mood, remind yourself they too may be having a bad day and instead send them some love. Picture yourself sending them a love eyes emoji text message, put a smile on your face and get on with your day!
SWITCH IT OFF
Breath in and out through the nose, introducing a counting system, inhale to the count of 4 and exhale to the count of 4. Having a bad day and this is not cutting it? Maybe try taking a big inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth to sigh it out. Better still, find a space to scream it out. "Better out than in!"
WHAT ARE WE SAYING?
I love to think of the cartoon with the angel and demon sitting on the characters shoulder, whispering different thoughts.
Fear is the biggest cause of stress and tension in the body. When we surround ourselves with stories of what could be, we fill our mind and bodies full of fear. Switch off the news, switch off the people in our lives that thrive on negativity and switch on your positive playlist instead.
GET MOVING
Ever catch yourself filling your head with reasons why you cant do something? Comparing yourself to other people and making you feel ugly? Flick that demon off your shoulder and instead remind yourself of all the reasons you can do something, why you are beautiful and all your amazing potential!
Walking, running, dancing, yoga, there are so many ways to get your body moving and each one releases endorphins to get you feeling happy. Even if you are just sat in a chair and moving your arms around, there really are no excuses.
TAKE IT SLOW
Slowing down is sure to make your happiness levels rocket! Take time in your day to sit still and just notice your breath.

the 2019
US OPEN 119th U.S. Open Championship Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, Calif. June 10th - 16th, 2019 Brooks Koepka is the current holder of the trophy having won the tournament in 2018 and previously in 2017. With a field of the worlds best golfers it is one of the most difficult Majors to win, therefore it is very doubtful that Koepka could make the “Hat Trick” Here is the history of the start of one of Americas most iconic courses: The Greatest Meeting of Land and Sea was entrusted to a pair of amateur golfers with no design experience. Jack Neville and Douglas Grant designed the iconic figure-eight layout originally known as Del Monte’s Second Course, guided by a simple philosophy: “It was all there in plain sight,” Neville admitted. “The big thing, naturally, was to get in as many holes as possible along the bay. Years before it was built, I could see this place as a golf links. Nature had intended it to be nothing else.” Pebble Beach Golf Links officially opened for play on Feb. 22nd, 1919. A gathering of 50 players competed in the opening tournament, with each golfer committing to a “golfer’s oath” around a cherry tree on George Washington’s Birthday. The San Francisco Examiner used the oath for its headline: ‘We Pledge Ourselves by Our Faith in the Cherry Tree to Turn in Honest Score Cards.’ Grant set the course record at 80, a 7-over score on the par73 layout that measured 6,020 yards. Both Grant and Neville were acclaimed amateur golfers — they even chose to design Pebble Beach for free to preserve their amateur status.
52
A year after Pebble Beach opened, it joined Del Monte’s First Course (still in Monterey today) as the host for the California State Amateur. Already a three-time State Amateur champion, Neville went on to win two more titles on the course he built. (Grant was a three-time medalist, and won the 1918 title, too.) The golf on Feb. 22 was actually overshadowed by the opening of the Del Monte Lodge — now known as The Lodge at Pebble Beach. The San Francisco Examiner gushed about a 400-guest gathering that evening, dedicating its story to who attended, and what they wore: “A fashionable gathering was present on Saturday night at the opening of Del Monte Lodge, which promises in future to be one of the favorite meeting places for society.”
Jack Nicklaus The greatest golfer of all time
Jack William Nicklaus (born January 21, 1940), nicknamed The Golden Bear, is a retired American professional golfer. Many observers regard him as the greatest golfer of all time. During a span of more than 25 years, he won a record 18 major championships while producing 19 second-place and 9 third-place finishes. Nicklaus focused on the major championships—Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship—and played a selective schedule of regular PGA Tour events. He finished with 73 victories, third on the all-time list behind Sam Snead (82) and Tiger Woods (80). Nicklaus won the U.S. Amateur in 1959 and 1961 and challenged for the 1960 U.S. Open, where he finished in second place, two shots behind Arnold Palmer. Nicklaus turned professional at age 21 toward the end of 1961. He earned his first professional win at the 1962 U.S. Open when he defeated Palmer by three shots in a next day 18-hole playoff.
at age 46 at the 1986 Masters, he became the tournament's oldest winner. Nicklaus joined the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the PGA Tour Champions) when he became eligible in January 1990, and by April 1996 had won 10 tournaments, including eight major championships despite playing a very limited schedule. He continued to play at least some of the four regular Tour majors until 2005, when he made his final appearances at the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship. Nicklaus has also taken part in various other activities, including golf course design, charity work and book writing. He is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and has helped design courses such as Harbour Town Golf Links. Nicklaus also runs his own event on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world. Nicklaus' books vary from instructional to autobiographical, with his Golf My Way considered one of the best instructional golf books of all time; the video of the same name is the best selling golf instructional to date.
This win over Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two golf superstars. In 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this distinction, and also won The Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. At age 26, he became the youngest to do so at the time. He won another Open Championship in 1970. Between 1971 and 1980, he won an additional nine major championships, overtook Bobby Jones' record of 13 majors, and became the first player to complete double and triple career slams of golf's four professional major championships. When Nicklaus claimed his 18th and final major championship 53

TRAVEL REPORT
Monaco Squeezed into just 200 hectares, Monaco might be the world’s second-smallest country (only the Vatican is smaller), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in attitude. A magnet for high-rollers and hedonists since the early 20th century, it's also renowned as one of the world's most notorious tax havens and home to the annual Formula One Grand Prix.
Monaco is a tiny independent city-state on France’s Mediterranean coastline known for its upscale casinos, yachtlined harbour and prestigious Grand Prix motor race, which runs through Monaco’s streets once a year. Monte-Carlo, its major district, is home to an elegant belle-époque casino complex and ornate Salle Garnier opera house. It also has many luxury hotels, boutiques, nightclubs and restaurants. Monaco has an area of 2.020 km2 (0.780 sq mi), making it the second-smallest country in the world after the Vatican. Its population was about 38,400 based on the last census of 2016. With 19,009 inhabitants per km², it is the most denselypopulated sovereign state in the world. Monaco has a land border of 5.47 km (3.40 mi), a coastline of 3.83 km (2.38 mi), and a width that varies between 1,700 and 349m (5,577 and 1,145ft). The highest point in the country is a narrow pathway named Chemin des Révoires on the slopes of Mont Agel, in the Les Révoires Ward, which is 161 metres (528 feet) above sea level. Monaco's most populous Quartier is Monte Carlo and the most populous Ward is Larvotto/Bas Moulins. Through land reclamation, Monaco's land mass has expanded by 20 percent; in 2005, it had an area of only 1.974 km2 (0.762 sq mi). Monaco is known as a playground for the rich and famous, due to its tax laws. In 2014, it was noted that about 30% of the population was made up of millionaires. Monaco is a principality governed under a form of constitutional monarchy, with Prince Albert II as head of state. Although Prince Albert II is a constitutional monarch, he wields immense political power. The House of Grimaldi has ruled Monaco, with 56
brief interruptions, since 1297. The official language is French, but Monégasque, Italian, and English are widely spoken and understood. The state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861, with Monaco becoming a full United Nations voting member in 1993. Despite Monaco's independence and separate foreign policy, its defense is the responsibility of France. However, Monaco does maintain two small military units. Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with the opening of the country's first casino, Monte Carlo, and a railway connection to Paris. Since then, Monaco's mild climate, scenery, and gambling facilities have contributed to the principality's status as a tourist destination and recreation centre for the rich. In more recent years, Monaco has become a major banking centre and has sought to diversify its economy into the services sector and small, high-valueadded, non-polluting industries.
The state has no income tax, low business taxes, and is well known for being a tax haven. It is also the host of the annual street circuit motor race Monaco Grand Prix, one of the original Grands Prix of Formula One. The principality has a club football team; AS Monaco, who have become French champions on multiple occasions. Monaco is not formally a part of the European Union (EU), but it participates in certain EU policies, including customs and border controls. Through its relationship with France, Monaco uses the euro as its sole currency (prior to this it used the MonĂŠgasque franc). Monaco joined the Council of Europe in 2004. It is a member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
Medieval villages, chateau hotels & rural retreats There are several lovely options to stay in the area without paying the premium prices for Monaco itself. Up the coast towards Italy are the seaside towns of Roquebrune Cap Martin, with its mix of medieval hilltop village and beach holiday resort, and Menton, a picture perfect town just before the border. To the other side, on the west of Monaco lie Cap d'Ail, an elegant coastal area and Eze, one of the best examples of a preserved hilltop village in France. The train line runs through the coastal towns, making travel to Monaco very simple if you prefer not to drive.
The heart of the action The middle section of Monaco encompasses La Condamine, the main marina Port Hercule and Monte-Carlo itself, home to the famous Casino and Cafe de Paris. This is where the majority of the luxury hotels are, along with the designer boutiques, fine restaurants and exclusive bars and nightclubs. Old town and historic centre of the 'rock' The western area of Monaco is known as Fontvieille and is the quietest area of Monaco. The football stadium is located here as well as Princess Grace Botanical Gardens. This is a good area for less expensive hotel accommodation as well as apartment rentals. Note that it is a fairly long and hilly walk into the main area of Monaco from here as you have to walk around the Port de Fontvieille and over the Rocher de Monaco, the rock of Monaco. Beach clubs and beach resorts As you go further to the east, it becomes quieter again; there are a couple of hotel options here including both the Monte-Carlo Bay Resort and Le Meridien Beach Plaza hotels. This area is also home to the only public beach in Moncao, Larvotto, in addition to a couple of private beach clubs.

SPORT / EVENTS A guide to Spanish sports & pastimes
playing
TENNIS inSpain by Louise Crawford Tennis as an amateur sport is still amongst the 10 most played sports in Spain, ranking 8th in 2017 in terms of club members playing the sport. There were 77,864 tennis members according to the 2018 Annual Sports Statistics published by the Ministry of Sport. Whilst it has been losing ground to pádel in recent years, which is growing rapidly, maybe as a result of the proliferation of courts springing up all over Spain in developments and multisports centres, tennis is still perceived to be a prestigious and exciting sport. The popularity of Spanish tennis in the decade must surely have been greatly buoyed up by one name: Rafael Nadal. As the winner of 14 Grand Slams and Olympic gold medal winner since 2008, this has assured him of his place as the best ever player on clay (‘tierra batida’). Most Spanish tennis courts are outdoor clay ones, although it is not hard to find courts in most autonomous communities with either an astroturf or hard court surface. Most clubs in Spain are affiliated to the RFET, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (Real Federación Española de Tenis), which was formed in 1909 and was formerly called the Royal Lawn Tennis Association of Spain (Real Asociación de Lawn-Tenis de España). Tennis is a very affordable sport to play and is also great fun and sociable, particularly if you play doubles. Depending on the effort you put in and whether you are playing a competitive game, it can offer a great cardio workout without putting too much pressure on the joints, provided you build up gently if you haven’t done regular exercise for a while. Before playing, you should start with either a gentle jog round the court, and/ 60
or do some dynamic stretching, and warm down afterwards with static stretching exercises. It requires little equipment or specialist clothing – just a tennis racket, tennis balls, some comfortable and ideally sweatproof sports clothing, and nonmarking tennis shoes. Let’s focus on two of these elements:
Just for Fun Test Your Tennis in Spain Knowledge
(no peeking at the answers on the opposite page!) 1. In tennis scoring, how do you say the equivalent of 15 All or 30 All in Spanish? 15____ or 30 _____ 2. Which of these players is NOT from Spain/does not represent Spain? Pablo Carreno Busta • Caroline García, Juan Martín del Potro • Carla Sánchez Navarro, or Pablo Cuevas? 3. How many times has Rafael Nadal won the French Open? 4. Which tennis shot is known as ‘la derecha’ in Spanish? The smash, the serve, the forehand, the backhand?
Don’t rush into buying an expensive racket if you’re just taking up the sport, or are a rusty returner. You should not have to spend more than 60-80 Euros to find a decent first racket! It’s best to try a few different ones before deciding which is right for you. The main factors to consider are: head size, weight and grip size. The right head size will depend on your skill level, physical strength, physical build and age profile, for example, a larger head size will give you more control, as it will have a bigger sweet spot. An oversize racket would be 102-110sq in; a mid-size head would be 98-102sq in. Weight: lightweight rackets are likely to suit beginner/ intermediate players who are not physically very strong. A lightweight racket would be around 225-280g, whilst a heavy racket would be around 300-340g Adults may want to test different grip sizes, with grip sizes 1, 2, or 3 recommended for women, and 3, 4, or 5 for men. When you wrap your hand around the handle, there should be a 1cm gap (or the width of your forefinger) between your thumb and first finger.
Footwear
Tennis shoes differ from "normal casual" trainers and even running shoes as they have a sole pattern which gives a good grip on tennis surfaces. The other very important difference is that they provide much more lateral support. They prevent your feet from too much lateral movement, hence turning over on your ankle. Running shoes are mainly designed to give you support when moving forward. Ensure you choose the right type of tennis shoe for the surface you are playing on. Tennis shoes that have a normal herringbone pattern all the way through the sole unit are good for all courts, but are particularly suited to clay courts. As well as a suitable outsole, these shoes also provide a good level of stability and lateral support, key for clay court players moving side-to-side at the baseline. The herringbone pattern runs all the way along the sole, without a break so it creates even weight distribution, allowing for smooth sliding around a clay court. Grass Court (with pimples) and OMNI Sole Tennis Shoes, which are best on artificial (or real) grass. The omni ones are really good on artificial grass and they also provide extra grip on normal hard courts.
Answers: 1. 15 or 30 "iguales" 2. Caroline García, Juan Martín del Potr & Pablo Cuevas 3. 11 times 4. The forehand

WORLDS MOST Astonishing facts & figures from around the globe. successful male
TENNIS stars
These are the most successful men's singles Grand Slam champions. Some major changes have taken place in history and have affected the number of titles that have been won by various players. These have included the opening of the French national championships to international players in 1925, the elimination of the challenge round in 1922, and the admission of professional players in 1968 (the start of the Open era) 1. Roger Federer
2. Rafael Nadal
There can be no dispute about who currently deserves the title of the greatest of all time. A record 17 Grand Slam titles -- and counting -- would be enough to make Federer’s case, but the Swiss master is more than just trophies.
8 French Open titles mean that the man from Mallorca can without hesitation claim to be the greatest clay-court player of all time, but he has become so much more than just the master of the terre battue.
3. Pete Sampras
4. Rod Laver
With 14 Grand Slam titles to his name and 286 weeks ranked as the best player in the world, second only to Federer, Sampras was a winning machine. His joint record 7 Wimbledon titles say much for the quality of both his first serve and perhaps more notably his second serve, both of which may well be the greatest ever.
When the major tournaments became open to all players, amateur and professional, Laver promptly won Wimbledon in 1968 before taking a clean sweep of Grand Slams the following year among an Open-era record 17 titles.
64
5. Bjorn Borg
6. Andre Agassi
Amassing 11 Grand Slam titles is an incredible achievement and all achieved by one day after Borg’s 25th birthday. All his Grand Slam wins came at the French Open and Wimbledon, with his achievement of having won both tournaments back-to-back for three consecutive years perhaps never to be matched
The Las Vegas native began his career as the flamboyant wild man of tennis and ended it as the sport’s most respected ambassador. In between, Agassi amassed eight Grand Slam titles in a career that experienced the most exhilarating highs and crushing lows.
7. Novak Djokovic
8. John McEnroe
While those below him on this list have won more than his six Grand Slams, it is hard to downplay the challenge that Djokovic has faced in competing in the greatest era men’s tennis has ever witnessed.
His legendary temper and accompanying catchphrase have become so widely known that they have almost overshadowed his actual on-court achievements. A quick look at his record of seven Grand Slam singles titles together with a further nine in doubles should correct that oversight.
9. Ivan Lendl
10. Jimmy Connors
Lendl was a virtual ever present at the latter stages of Grand Slams throughout the 1980s, winning eight Grand Slams in his extraordinary 19 appearances in finals. In addition, only Federer and Sampras have spent more weeks at No. 1.
The California native claimed five U.S. Open titles, as well as two Wimbledon crowns together with a win on one of only two visits to the Australian Open. His peak was in the mid-1970s when he spent 159 straight weeks ranked at No. 1 in the world.
Pat Cash
Stefen Edberg
Boris Becker
Now a retired Australian professional tennis player. He reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 4 in May 1988 and a career-high ATP doubles ranking of world No. 6 in August 1988. He has been described as one of the greatest net players of all time by Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
The Swedish former world No. 1 professional tennis player.

ESPADEVIDA
the first over 50’s co-Housing development in the area. After everything that has been happening in the world – do you still trust that your country can provide all the services that the older generation may need one day? making health and elderly care costs sustainable, involves changes very few governments are willing to make, especially nowadays. They push the older age groups to the ‘forgotten corner’, unless we are willing to collectively pay a big price for some sort of quality of life while we are ageing. So what are we going to do, percentage of our population that age group? We become way we, and especially the always have been.
considering a large belongs to exactly creative, the same older generations,
The imbalance is caused by incorrectly categorizing people as “old”. In reality, we are still very capable of being the foundation of a so-called “silver economy” up until a late age. Nowadays, ‘old’ doesn’t justify its meaning up until at least the 80th life-year. At any age up until then, most of us will be fit enough to contribute to an alternative community of our own. using their own resources, the ‘older generation’ still has the ability to build themselves an affordable neighbourhood. They’re still “young enough” to participate in and create a community lifestyle that provides any service they might need for the future, in a flexible and sustainable way.
Impassioned by this idea, we are making ESPADEVIDA a reality. Affordable Co-housing lifestyle apartments that will have any service provided from within. Created and arranged by you, for you. We have already laid out the structure – the contents are up to you, the future residents, to decide. Attend our Workshop to learn more about building these unique and affordable lifestyle apartments with us, visit www.espadevida.com/workshop
