COME WINE WITH ME From brews to booze...

Valentines

Cocktails Planning a romantic dinner this Valentine's Day? Great drinks can complement your meal and allow you to impress your valentine by showing off your cocktail mixing skills. The recipes are easy to follow and include many of our favourite aphrodisiacs like chocolate and strawberry. Have fun by embellishing your drinks with garnishes that fit the mood. Carve fruit into heart shapes, dip strawberries in chocolate, adorn them with candies, or add a single flower. They're all lovely additions. Blushing Geisha A sexy little cocktail, the blushing geisha is the perfect fit for any special occasion. It's sweet, fruity, and is kissed with a hint of rose. This light cocktail features the aphrodisiac-filled Ty Ku liqueur, which includes pomegranate, honeydew, yuzu, and Asian pear. It's a fantastic base for the pomegranate juice and rose nectar, creating a beautiful drink that you will love to share. Figgy Sparkler What would Valentine's Day be without Champagne? For a truly unique and intriguing drink featuring your favourite sparkling wine, we suggest the figgy sparkler. This simple recipe pairs figs and cranberries with vodka and Prosecco. If you like, infuse your vodka with fig to enhance the fruit's flavour and ramp up this love potion's intoxicating qualities.

6

The Brogue For whiskey lovers, the brogue is a fine choice. It focuses on the contrast between a smooth single malt scotch and the delicate floral flavour of lavender. In reality, this recipe is little more than an enhanced rusty nail and it's a true delight. The homemade lavender honey syrup is easy to make and when it and a hint of citrus hit that classic combo of scotch and Drambuie, the real magic happens. Red Lotus Lychee is a lesser-known aphrodisiac, though this small Asian fruit can make a real splash in romantic cocktails. The red lotus is a simple drink that shows it off in splendid style. You won't need any special bar-tending skills and anyone can mix up this easy high-ball. If you love a vodka cranberry (aka cape codder), then this drink is right up your alley. All you need are vodka, lychee liqueur, and cranberry juice. Floating on Cloud Nine When a sweet, dreamy drink is on your mind, few can rival this recipe. It is a dessert within itself and is sure to have you and your valentine floating on cloud nine. The only drawback is that you have to deal with the whirl of a blender. That is only momentary, though, and the mix of whipped cream vodka in a creamy, strawberry smoothie is worth it.

AT THE MOVIES Films to look out for in the coming months.

Isnt't It Romantic. In theatres February 15th, 2019. SUMMARY Rebel Wilson is ready for her “I Feel Pretty” moment. The Australian comedian best known for her roles in “Bridesmaids” and the “Pitch Perfect” franchise will step into the lead for “Isn’t It Romantic?,” a romantic comedy parody slated for a Valentine’s Day theatrical run. Fellow Aussie Liam Hemsworth plays opposite Wilson, who stars as a woman who hits her head and wakes up only able to see the world through rom-com-colored glasses. The new trailer plays like a meta rom-com that plays satirically with many of the tropes of the genre. SYNOPSIS As the synopsis reads: “New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with

8

a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.” The movie also stars Adam Devine as Natalie’s earnest best friend Josh, Priyanka Chopra as yoga ambassador Isabella, and Jennifer Saunders as her mother. Emmy nominee Betty Gilpin (“Glow”) and comedian Michelle Buteau round out the funny cast. INFORMATION “Isn’t It Romantic” was directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson from a script by by Erin Cardillo and Dana Fox (“How to be Single”) & Katie Silberman (“Set It Up”). New Line Cinema produced, and Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters on February 14, 2019.

N332 Driving in Spain

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.

Keep warm & Safe As we head into the winter months, there is a chill in the air, and many people in Spain rely on bottled gas to heat their homes, and many more rely on bottled gas for cooking. Although the gas supply companies will deliver the bottles to your home, many people find it more convenient to pick up their own supply at many of the outlets across the country, exchanging the empty bottles for full ones, but in order to do this, we have to think about the safety and security implications of carrying a potentially lethal canister. Depending on their size and weight, the canisters can be very heavy as they are filled with pressurised gas. At home, care should be taken as to where they are stored, in well ventilated places, away from heat and ignition sources, far away from toxic materials and always in an upright position. In the car It is crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. Spanish law states that you can carry 2 gas bottles in the car, and they must be carried in an upright, vertical position. You must also take necessary measure to ensure that the canisters are secured in the vehicle and cannot move during the journey. The law also states that when you are carrying gas canisters, it is forbidden to park the vehicle in an underground car park.

You should also check with your local supply company for their recommendations for storage and carriage, as gas canisters can pose a major threat if not handled correctly, but are perfectly safe if the advice is followed. Here is the Royal Decree which relates to carrying Gas in the car.

You can find more info and additional stories by visiting their website www.n332.es or liking their page on Facebook/N332. They also have a new magazine “N332 Road watch” available for download as PDF for just 2 euros. 12

THINGS TO DO & places to see...

Lubrín Lubrín is a white-washed village set within the Sierra Filabres Mountains in the Almería region of southern Spain and just 45 minutes drive to the coast along some breathtaking quiet roads with many places to stop and just enjoy the majestic views.

BACKGROUND

The festival of our patron, San Sebastián, of Tourist Interest of Andalucía, celebrated January 20th, culminates in a shower of bread rolls, so this festival is known locally as the bread festival. After the procession of the Saint the Lubriñenses share tables and a large picnic in the streets takes place.

Lubrín is an ideal destination for lovers of rural tourism. Visitors can discover its charm by walking through the various hamlets and estates. The village centre offers the typical narrow, steep streets flanked with whitewashed houses adorned with flowers. As with many villages in Almería, The church here is a very important building and always well worth a visit but a little more on that later.

In October they celebrate the festival of the Virgin of the Rosary, our patroness, along with the Festival of Rural Gastronomy. There is a contest of local traditional dishes, which are then tasted by the public.

Since the 16th century, Lubrín has relied on its agricultural products, in particular olives and almonds on irrigated terraces and the rearing of goat herds for their popular soft cheese (queso de cabra).

GASTRONOMY

Gastronomic Tourism is an innovative option for visitors to Lubrín. The famous Pierna de Choto (milk fed tender goat leg) and excellent olive oil, processed in the oil mill in Lubrín, are well known products. There are two bakeries where they bake daily bread and cakes with traditional ingredients and cooked in wood-fired ovens. The local butchers supply a selection of handmade sausages and cold meats of high quality. Visiting the bars and restaurants in the old streets of Lubrín, you can try an infinite variety tapas and wines using locally and often ecologically produced foods such as fruit and vegetables, almonds, meats, oils, and wines. You will also find several popular restaurants with tasty and excellent menus.

festivals

Participation in the two largest festivals of Lubrín, that are linked with the cuisine of this town, is another way to appreciate our products of the land and the gastronomy. 14

The Tourist Office offers a made to measure product to the visitor who would like to get to know Lubrín through its gastronomy. For the individual visitors, there is an excellent tapas route, and the office of tourism are always delighted to advise on any aspect of the route. For groups, they can put together a program that can include a tour of the places of interest of the village, the tapas route, and a visit to the oil mill and local food establishments.

LUBRÍN ALMERIA

MOJÁCAR

el castillo

The fortress castle (only traces remain) in Lubrín dates from moorish times and was built around 1309. It appears in the first census of muslim Lubrín in 1488, also in the book of land and property registry of 1577, and in the most recent census carried out by the Marqués de Ensenada in 1750. Nowadays it is difficult to find traces of the castle, but it is a wonderful viewing point and also home of the clocktower.

El Lavadero

Found at the entrance to Lubrín and fed by the Fuente de Abajo, water still courses through the long channel although nowadays the laundry is not in use. It was the place where women did their washing and kept up to date with the village news.

La Iglesia

The 19th century temple is dedicated to Ntra.Snra.del Rosario built around 1880. The diocesan architectEnrique López Rull used one of the most important materials of 19th century architecture, iron, to produce a building full of light and space.

He goes on to say about Casona Granado: "The British expats Clayton and Rachel Morley have taken a run-down house in the pretty village of El Pilar, Lubrin and turned it into exactly the sort of place you dream of finding in the Almerian hills. The eight rooms pitch bold-coloured fabrics against bright white walls — Nos 4, 5 and 6 have huge views of the Sierra de Filabres. If you’re wondering where to eat, Albar, the best restaurant in the area, is downstairs. Order the goat."

QUITE INTERESTING fun facts and figures... cheeky

CHOCOLATE Who doesn’t like some nice chocolates for Valentines day? You might even be buying your loved one a special box to show your love, but did you know these facts about the sweet, tasty goodness that is Chocolate? 1. A chocolate river exists Well it did, back in 1971. The famous chocolate river Augustus Gloop almost drowned in in the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory film was made 15,000 gallons of water mixed with chocolate and cream. With all the cream, the river spoiled fairly quickly and the cast revealed it left a terrible smell. 2. Chocolate was used as money In Mayan times the cocoa bean was used as currency as it was considered to be worth more than gold dust. Cultivation of the beans was restricted so the value of cocoa beans as money would not go down 3. White chocolate isn't real chocolate Yes, we've all been lied to. In order to be classified as real chocolate, a product has to contain cocoa solids or cocoa liquor. White "chocolate" contains cocoa butter instead. It's allowed to be called chocolate because the EU 20 per cent cocoa butter, 14 per cent total milk solids, 3.5 per cent milk fat and has no more than 55 per cent sugar content, you can label it white chocolate. 4. Europeans love chocolate According to the International Cocoa Organization, Europeans account for almost half the world's chocolate consumption. They estimate the average Brit, Swiss, or German eat 11kg of chocolate. 5. world's largest chocolate bar In celebration of its 100th birthday, Thorntons created the world's largest chocolate bar - weighing a record breaking 5,792.50kg. Thorntons staff member Paul Bell said: "All staff were asked to come up with ideas of how we should celebrate our 100th birthday and, because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was my favourite film as a child, I immediately thought of a scene from the film where a bar of chocolate was shrunk 18

and I thought – “wouldn't it be fantastic to do the reverse and make the world's largest bar of chocolate”.’ 6. The chocolate chip cookie was an accident In 1930 Ruth Wakefield realised she was out of baker's chocolate and mixed broken piece of Nestle chocolate into her cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to be absorbed and create chocolate cookies. Instead, she accidentally created chocolate chip cookies, and later sold the idea to Nestle in return for a lifetime supply of chocolate. 7. Crisps dipped in chocolate exist For a limited time only, Lay's (known as Walkers in the UK) in America sold crisps dipped in a layer of milk chocolate. The Calgary Herald said the crisps had a "salty-sweet combination, along with the texture contrast of warm melted choclate and a crunchy chip." 8. You can die if you eat too much chocolate Chocolate contains high levels of a powerful stimulant called 'theobromine'. Theobromine poisoning can cause heart failure, seizures, acute kidney damage and dehydration. To ingest enough theobromine for it to be fatal, you have to eat about 22lb of chocolate or 40 bars of Dairy Milk. 9. Your chocolate probably contains bugs On average, a chocolate bar contains around eight insect parts, but it is still deemed to be safe for consumption. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration, "most foods have natural contaminants in them, but there are levels which the FDA deems safe. Anything more than 60 insect pieces per 100 grams of chocolate is rejected by the FDA." 10. We eat a lot of Toblerones So many Toblerone bars are sold each year that, if they were to be laid end to end, they would go on for 62,000km which longer than the circumference of the Earth.

Buying a lotto ticket with her two best friends didn’t change Zoe’s life. Only following her heart would do that... Sure, winning the lottery allows Zoe Ferris to quit her job as a cutthroat corporate attorney, but no amount of cash will clear her conscience about the way her firm treated the O’Leary family in a wrongful death case. So she sets out to make things right, only to find gruff, grieving Aiden O’Leary doesn’t need—or want—her apology. He does, however, need something else from her. Something Zoe is more than willing to give, if only to ease the pain in her heart, a sorrow she sees mirrored in his eyes. Aiden doesn’t know what possesses him to ask his family’s enemy to be his fake fiancée. But he needs a bride if he hopes to be the winning bid on the campground he wants to purchase as part of his beloved brother’s legacy. Skilled in the art of deception, the cool beauty certainly fits the bill...

All’s fair in love and work. The first standalone romance by New York Times and #1 international best-selling author Christina Lauren, is a sexy, compulsively readable romantic comedy that dives headlong into the thrill and doubt of modern love.

Theodore Swann is a jobbing writer, proprietor of the Matrimonial Advertiser lonely hearts gazette, and all-round weasel. He’s the very last man that Martin St. Vincent would choose to rely on—and the only one who can help.

Despite the odds against them from an embarrassing meet-awkward at a mutual friend’s Halloween party, Carter and Evie immediately hit it off. Even the realization that they’re both high-powered agents at competing firms in Hollywood isn’t enough to squash the fire but when their two agencies merge—causing the pair to vie for the same position—all bets are off.

Martin is a wealthy merchant who finds himself obliged to put a stop to a young heiress’s romantic correspondence in the Matrimonial Advertiser. When she and her swain make a dash for Gretna Green, Martin drags Theo on a breakneck chase up the country to catch the runaway lovers before it’s too late.

What could have been a beautiful, blossoming romance turns into an all-out war of sabotage. Carter and Evie are both thirtysomething professionals—so why can’t they act like it?..

Theo guards his secrets. Martin guards his heart. But as the two of them are thrown irresistibly together, entanglements, deceptions, and revelations come thick and fast...

LIFESTYLE Health & Well-being

motivate

YOURSELF Anyone can have a hard time making exercise part of their routine. But throw family or work into the mix, and it can almost feel impossible. Why is it so hard for busy people to exercise? Often it comes down to motivation. Parents, for example, typically don’t get enough sleep and spend their days constantly responding to needs of another human being, That combination is emotionally and physically draining, which leads to less motivation for physical activity.”

It’s easy to put exercise on your “wouldn’t it be nice” list, but fitness is too important to keep on the back burner. There are so many health benefits that come from being physically active, like reducing your risk for serious diseases and it’s especially important for busy people to stay fit.

Become an early bird

Willpower isn’t an unlimited resource, the more you use it throughout the day, the less you have left at night to force yourself to go to the gym. That’s why some people get in their workouts in the morning, when their drive is at its maximum levels. And that’s not the only reason to become a morning exerciser. If you wait until later in the day, it’s a lot likelier that things will pop up and get in the way of working out. For example, if your kids go to bed early, do the same. That way you can wake up and work out, knowing that you’ve already done something for yourself that day.”

Get other people involved

Most of us love family time but this is what often gets priority over exercising. Combine the two and you’ll be motivated to move since you’re doing something you love, spending time with your family.

22

There are many physical activities that are good for all ages. Playing with your children or grandchildren at the beach or the local sports area or maybe even go for a nature walk. Alternatively, find a friend who likes the same things you do, like running or cycling. It provides accountability as you won’t want to let the other person down by not showing up. Plus, chatting with a friend makes working out more enjoyable!

Set smaller goals

Most of the time, people don’t work out because it seems like an intimidating or daunting task. You don’t have to spend an hour at the gym to be active, there are lots of little ways to make everyday activities and chores just a little harder. And it’s so much easier to fit 10 minutes of movement into your day every few hours than find a larger chunk of time in your schedule.

Keep equipment front & centre

Sometimes a simple thing like putting your workout gear in your living room or next to the front door can be key to feeling more motivated. Out of sight, out of mind is true, but so is the opposite. Put things like resistance bands or an exercise ball in a visible place, and you’ll get that extra nudge to actually use them. Every time you see them, you’ll get reminded.

A few ideas: Take one bag of shopping in at a time from the car, do sets of 10 squats or push-ups in between loads of laundry, or take stairs two at a time to get your heart rate up.

Exercise in the home. When it comes to exercise, there are two barriers that prevent most people from starting a workout routine: time and money. People are too busy to get to the gym and membership fees can be outrageous. So how are we supposed to squeeze in a good gym session? At home. Working out at home doesn't require buying a lot of fancy equipment either. You can work up a sweat and build cardio and strength using basic household items. Combine the following exercises into a circuit, performing each for 15 to 20 reps, 3 to 5 rounds, for a total-body workout.

Stairs

If you have a set of stairs in your house, you have an array of exercises, right at your feet. Stand on the stair so your heels are hanging off the back of a step. Use the rail to balance yourself as you stand onto your tiptoes. Lower your heel down and then repeat. This is a great calf exercise. Challenge: Try loading a laundry basket up with clothes and place a container of detergent on top. Hike up and down the stairs with that load. You just created a cardio workout with weights.

A Wall

Pick a wall, any wall. Get nice and close. Stand with your back toward the wall and feet shoulder-width apart. Place your upper back on the wall and sit down into a squat. Lower down so your legs are in a 90-degree angle and hold for 30 to 60 seconds. Performing a wall sit is one of the best ways to tone your legs and core all at the same time.

The Kitchen Table

First, make sure you have a sturdy table at your disposal. If you do, place you hands on the edge of the table, shoulder-

width apart. Walk your feet slightly back so you're leaning your weight on the table. Make sure your arms are extended, back straight and core engaged. Lower your chest toward the table, hold, and then push yourself back up to the starting position. This is an incline push-up, a great full-body move. You can also use a chair, the couch, a step or the kitchen counter.

Broom

Take the broom and grip it with both hands, about shoulderwidth apart. Fingers face forward. Press it up, overhead and then rest it on your upper back, just below the base of your neck. Stand tall and engage your core. Twist the broomstick and your right arm forward, while allowing the left arm to move backward. Return to centre and then twist to the right.

Laundry Basket

Remember the laundry basket from earlier? Bring that back out. Load it up with clothes and top it with the laundry detergent. Use this weight to perform dead-lifts. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart. Place the basket between your feet. Keep your shoulders down, away from your ears and chest up. Slightly hinge at the hips, bend your knees, and push your rear back. Grasp the handles of the basket and keep your back straight. Drive through your heels. Keep your arms long, back flat and stand up. Lower the basket to the ground and repeat.

Chair

The kitchen table chair can help you work your triceps. Begin by turning your back to the seat of the chair. Place your palms on the seat with your fingers facing forward. Then, with your legs straight or bent at 90 degrees, bend the elbows to lower your glutes to the ground. Press through the palms to target the triceps like never before. Then push up to the starting position. Remember, all consult your doctor before trying any new special exercises and never do anything that are not comfortable with, the aim is to keep motivated and not put yourself off with difficult or hazardous exercise.

Enhanced version of Niépce's 'View from the Window at Le Gras' (1826), the earliest surviving photograph of a real-world scene, made using a camera obscura. Centuries of advances in chemistry and optics, including the invention of the camera obscura, set the stage for the world’s first photograph in 1826 by French scientist Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, who's first real success using bitumen to create a permanent photograph of the image in a camera obscura came in 1824.

That photograph, made on the surface of a lithographic stone, was later effaced. In 1826 or 1827 he again photographed the same scene, the view from a window in his house, on a sheet of bitumen-coated pewter. The result has survived and is now the oldest known camera photograph still in existence. The historic image had seemingly been lost early in the 20th century, but photography historian Helmut Gernsheim succeeded in tracking it down in 1952. 24

by Dean Baker

The exposure time required to make it is usually said to have been eight or nine hours, but that is a mid-20th century assumption based largely on the fact that the sun lights the buildings on opposite sides, as if from an arc across the sky, indicating an essentially day-long exposure. A later researcher who used Niépce's notes and historically correct materials to recreate his processes found that in fact several days of exposure in the camera were needed to adequately capture such an image on a bitumen-coated plate. Further reading... Niépce entered into a partnership with Louis Daguerre, until his death in 1833, after which Daguerre continued to experiment, eventually working out a process that only superficially resembled Niépce's which he named the "daguerréotype" which became a very prolific process in photography.

FOOD FIT FOR 3 KINGS Forget the turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding; here are the top traditional Christmas foods to indulge in if you want to celebrate Christmas like the Spanish this year. Many Spanish have their main celebratory meal on Christmas Eve, while another special meal is eaten on Three Kings’ Day, on January 6.

Entremeses

Entremeses are like an appetiser plate, and are often served at the start of the Christmas or Christmas Eve meal. The plate may contain charcuterie such as ham, chorizo, morcilla (black pudding) and local cheeses such as Manchego.

Seafood

Seafood plays a big part in a Spanish Christmas meal, and is often served as the main course instead of the traditional turkey. Lobster and prawns are particularly popular, as is a seafood soup or stew as a starter.

Cochinillo Asado

Cochinillo or roast suckling pig is another favourite Christmas meal in many parts of Spain, particularly around the region of Castilla y León. It is cooked until the skin is brown and crispy, and is often cooked on a bed of onions and potatoes.

Wine Tourism in Ribera del Duero

Castilla y Leon means Romanesque architecture, austerity and also wine. Castilla y Leon offers many possibilities to the tourist wishing to enjoy a cultural and gastronomic break. Castilla y Leon is a crossroad for many types of wine: white Rueda made from the verdejo grape, red wines such as Ribero del Duero, the powerful Toro wine, or Bierzo wines made from the Mencia grape, without forgetting Cigales rose wines.

Wines of Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is one of Spain´s most prestigious wine regions. This wine region is located in Castilla Leon. Castilla Leon (north and north west of Madrid) is made up of 9 provinces and it is Spain´s number one region in terms of Unesco classified sites. Castilla Leon is full of Monasteries, castles, churches, cathedrals, fortresses but RIbera del Duero is not one of Castilla y Leon provinces. It is purely a wine region. This means it has no administrative status other than for the production (and regulation) of the wines and wineries in this territory. It is spread among 4 of the provinces (Valladolid. Burgos – where most of the vineyards are located- Soria and a tiny bit of Segovia).

HISTORY

Ribera del Duero is a land of red wines. If you do not enjoy reds, you should look for another region in Spain. The name of this region is derived from its proximity to the Duero river. The vineyards and wineries are located at both sides of the Duero valley. The river, a natural border for centuries, is surrounded by castles, churches and monasteries. It were the monasteries that grew most of the vineyards during the middle ages. The region was then an important wine producing region. But Ribera del Duero stopped being an important wine region and many of the vines planted where ripped up and cereal grain was planted instead. This happened through the XXth century but there was an exception to the crisis for Ribera del Duero.

Vega Sicilia

Probably Spain´s main wine icon, Vega Sicilia is located in Quintanilla de Onesimo, a small village between Valladolid (once home to the Spanish King´s Court) and Peñafiel. Vega Sicilia has been an admired brand back from the 1920´s. It may seem strange to understand why there were not others following Vega Sicilia for decades. But that changed and Mr Robert Parker had a word to play on the changing fortunes of Ribera del Duero. A small winery and its wines (Tinto Pesquera) were awarded top scores by Robert Parker. Vines were once again planted and wineries appeared like mushrooms.

The Denominacion de origen

(the regulatory institution that controls wine procedures and overall quality in the region) was created only in 1982. Wineries were part of it at the time, with close to 300 now a days… Most wines are 100% tempranillo (though exceptions exist) which is called Tinto Fina in this wine region. The popularity and demand of wines from Ribera del Duero has grown ever since and so have their prices. Though their younger wines (Jove or Roble – which means a short aging in oak barrel) show still reasonable prices, things change when we look at crianzas and reservas (not to mention gran reservas or “author” wines). Why has this region being so successful in recent years. There are important and solid wine making arguments that can explain the quality of these wines: the tempranillo grape, the composition of the soil and also the altitude. Close to 900 meters in many cases, the grapes are exposed to very hot days and cool nights. This ensures ripeness whilst, at the same time, preserves the necessary acidity to produce long lasting wines and contributes to the vivacity of fruit and aromas.

Ribera del Duero - Types of wines The following styles of wines. The names use are similar to those of other Denominaciones in Spain, but the specifics may vary.

Joven or Barrica. These wines cannot age for longer than 12 months. In the case of “true” Joven wines there is actually no aging. Barrica are normally aged in oak barrel for 4 months. Crianza. They must stay at least 12 months in oak barrel and cannot be released before 24 months. Reserva. 36 months of ageing and at least 12 months in oak barrels Gran

Reserva.

60

months

ageing, at least 24 months.

The majority of the production is labelled as Joven or Barrica. There are 2 reasons at least for this: The first is the price of these wines, which is considerably lower than the other types of wines. The second reason is a growing trend in Spain: an increase amount of people eat tapas/pinchos informally. This sort of meal demand less “serious” wines.

FOOD GLORIOUS

FOOD CHERRY SHORTBREAD HEARTS A recipe from James Martin (from Good Food magazine, February 2011), these easy biscuits taste as good as they look and make an ideal Valentine's Day gift.

Ingredients • 100g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting • 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 50g cornflour • 50g ground almonds • 250g pack cold butter, cut into cubes • 50g glacé cherries, finely chopped • ½ tsp almond extract • 8 tbsp cherry jam, sieved

method • Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Sift the icing sugar, flour and cornflour together into a bowl. Stir in the ground almonds and butter, then rub in the butter until smooth. Stir in the chopped glacé cherries and almond extract, and bring together to form a dough. • Roll out on a lightly floured surface, then stamp out biscuits using a heartshaped cutter. Keep re-rolling the trimmings until all the dough is used. Carefully transfer the biscuits to baking trays lined with parchment and bake for just 8-10 mins until just pale golden. • Using an upturned bottle top or similar, press gently into the centre of each biscuit to make a round indent. Spoon in a little jam and return to the oven for 2 mins. Remove and cool on a wire rack, before dusting with icing sugar to serve.

THE GOLF PAGES Tournament news, tips & course guides...

more unwritten

RULES there are new rules for 2019, but these unwritten rules are just as important.

The R&A and USGA have revealed the new golf rules to be implemented on 1st January 2019 and there are some huge changes set to come into play. However, as we mentioned in our last edition, there are many unofficial rules that should really be adhered to in the interests of etiquette. OFFER GIMMIES IN NON-COMPETITIVE ROUNDS Unless your foursome declares “no gimmies” at the beginning of the round, feel free to offer your playing partner the chance to “pick it up” if you’re just playing for fun. This allows your partner to decline the offer if he or she wants, but at least you’ve done the polite thing first. Of course, you also have a responsibility to never assume a putt is “good” until you hear someone tell you to pick it up. Always putt out everything, no matter how short the putt may be. CART PATH ONLY REALLY MEANS ‘CART PATH ONLY’ NO DUKES OF HAZARD When a golf course posts signs that say cart path only, they aren’t joking. I’ve seen numerous people ignore the signs and do as they please. The sign is there for a reason. If you want your local golf course to look good and have conditions worth playing in next time, follow these signs. Your lucky there isn’t a sniper squad waiting on the embankment picking you off after you violate these signs. DON’T BALL HAWK Everybody is very impressed with your 30-foot extendable ball retriever, grandpa. Now keep that monstrosity in your golf bag before the group behind us starts firing warning shots over 40

our heads. Nothing is more annoying than watching someone search for ball after ball in a creek, especially if their ball never went in the drink to begin with. We all know that golf balls are expensive. We also know how frustrating it is when you lose a brand new ball right out of the sleeve. But nothing makes you seem more cheap than spending 10 minutes fishing for golf balls. KEEP THE FLAG QUIET WHEN PUTTING Anyone who has ever caddied before knows to keep the flag from whipping around in the wind while people are trying to putt. Not only will the sound of the flag cause a problem, but a dancing flag shadow can also be a huge pet peeve. Do the right thing and either hold the flag close to the flagstick, or just lay the whole thing on the green. You’ll notice professional caddies take great care in limiting flag-waving when you watch golf on TV. Take a page out of their book and practice good flag etiquette.

LESS TALENTED GOLFERS ARE SURE TO GIVE YOU ADVICE I’m not sure why everyone wants to give unsolicited advice while on the golf course but please stop it. If you are just learning this great game, you are sure to run across golfers who ‘talk the talk, but can’t walk the walk’. I guess the worst players make the best coaches? So if you are that 25 handicap player giving others advice, please stop. Your shanked ball into the house on the first tee proves that you really don’t know what you are doing. THE GREEN IS NOT AN ASHTRAY Cigars and cigarettes are common vices enjoyed on the golf course. Golf carts don’t (usually) come equipped with an ashtray. That doesn’t mean it’s okay to throw your cigarette butts on the putting surface. An empty water bottle or beer can serves as a fine ashtray in a pinch. Discard your trash in an appropriate manner. KNOCK THE SAND OFF YOUR SHOES Have you ever walked onto a putting green that looks more like a bunker than a putting surface? More often than not this is due to people walking out of a greenside bunker and onto the green without cleaning their golf shoes first. All you have to do is tap the bottom of your shoe with your wedge to dislodge any sand from your sole. Everyone on the golf course will appreciate it.

Honorable Mentions YELL ‘FORE’ WHEN APPROPRIATE If your shot is heading straight for the head of another golfer, do the right thing and scream “Fore!” as loud as possible. Most golfers are conditioned to duck and cover when they hear that signal. Plus, it’s a great way to do your due diligence before you knock somebody out with your Pinnacle. Don’t go overboard with your shouting, however. Just as yelling fore could save someone from a painful situation, it can also incite a ton of anxiety among other groups if used too often. MOVE YOUR BALL MARKER If your ball mark could interfere with the stance or putting line of another player, offer to move your ball mark to the left or right. This should give the other player enough room to make a proper putting stroke. Just remember to replace your ball mark to its original position before hitting your putt. Otherwise, that’s a penalty. PLAY FROM THE CORRECT TEE BOX PLEASE Everybody likes to pretend they’re on the PGA TOUR.

MIND YOUR SHADOW Flags aren’t the only things that make a shadow on the putting green. Stay aware of your own shadow so it’s not hovering over someone’s golf ball on or off the green. It can be very distracting for your partners, especially if you’ve got a little more… um… volume than others. This rule also applies on all areas of the course and for all golf swings. Shadows can be extremely distracting on the tee box or fairway, too. PICK UP AND RETURN LOST CLUBS There are different opinions on how you should handle a lost golf club on the course. Some might say you should just leave it where the person who lost the club last used it (so he or she can return to the last place they remember using it). But you can’t go wrong with just picking up the club and returning it to the pro shop after your round. Another option would be to pick up the club and try to return it to the appropriate group on your own (if you can track them down, of course). REMOVE YOUR HAT WHEN SHAKING HANDS Remember kids: golf is a game of etiquette. If you’re a male and you prefer to shake hands with your fellow competitors on the 18th green, then be polite and remove your hat beforehand. It’s the gentlemanly thing to do.

Perhaps more accurately, everyone likes to get their money’s worth on the course. That doesn’t give you an excuse to play from the tips when you can’t break 100 on the course. Swallow your pride, get in your cart and move up to a set of tees appropriate to your skill level. Many courses have taken a direct approach to enforcing appropriate tee boxes. If your course has a tee box policy, do the right thing and adhere to it. PLAY “READY GOLF” Unless playing in a sanctioned competition, it is common courtesy to everyone on the course to play “ready golf.” This means it is acceptable to be a bit “lax” on the rule of having the player furthest from the hole play first. In an effort to speed things up, just hit the ball when you’re ready. THE BLOW UP HOLE IS INEVITABLE, JUST ACCEPT IT Golf can be a tricky game. One moment your are putting for birdie and the next moment you are putting to save a triple bogey. It is inevitable that the day you are having the round of your life you will run upon that “blow up hole”. Don’t worry, it happens to the professionals as well. Take a look at this scorecard from Kevin Na.

TRAVEL REPORT

the

Balearic Islands

The four largest Bakearic islands are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. Many minor islands and islets are close to the larger islands, including Cabrera, Dragonera, and S'Espalmador. The islands have a Mediterranean climate, and the four major islands are all popular tourist destinations. Ibiza, in particular, is known as an international party destination, attracting many of the world's most popular DJs to its nightclubs. The islands' culture and cuisine are similar to those of the rest of Spain, but have their own distinctive features.

Climate

The Balearics enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate, with often very warm temperatures even in the depths of winter; at the same time snow has been seen on the mountains during winter. The temperate nature of the climate and the fertile nature of the landscape mean that in the autumn, winter and spring you may encounter some rain, which is often heavy, but short lived. The summer months are long and lazy, with plenty of sunshine to enjoy

Cuisine

The traditional cuisine of the Balearic Islands stems from the cultivation of the rich farmland and centuries of hunting and fishing; from the popular fried Mallorcan fish to shellfish with vegetables and lobster stew; fresh island lamb (either roast or in dishes such as Panadera, Freixurat, and Trunyelles) to flavoursome pork sausages (Sobrassades, Botifarró blanc, Botifarró negre, Carn i xua, Cuixot) and fabulously delicious fresh goats cheese with herbs. Here and there are reminders of an English influence, perhaps best seen in the meat and fish pies. Many of the islands sweets and desserts make use of the lighter cheeses, herbs, honey and almonds. 42

Balearic Islands Mojácar

Culture and Excursions

The Island’s local authorities have produced multilingual guides for those interested in discovering the history and culture of their chosen destination. Whichever island you travel to, you are unlikely to be far from a local fiesta or event during your stay. Check with the tourist office on arrival. They will often also be able to give your discounted entrance tickets to leisure parks and other attractions. Don't be shy about asking!

Leisure & Recreation

The Balearic Islands are a Mecca for all sorts of sports activities; the range is quite staggering. There are riding schools, tennis clubs, golf courses, athletics clubs, go-kart centres, and much more. Check local information of your intended destination to see what is available. Palme de Mallorca

Likewise with water-sports, from diving to windsurfing, all options are covered. Fishing is also very popular and the waters around the islands are rich and fruitful. Surf-casting, rock fishing, along with boat hire – crewed or self hire, are available for fishing expeditions. Alongside fishing there are a number of companies who can offer hunting expeditions and equipment. Cycling is very popular on the islands and several international teams make this their base for pre-season training; as a consequence there are many easy to follow routes of varying difficulty. Even the casual cyclist can enjoy a day or two cycle hire and gently meander along the quiet roads, drinking in the scents and scenery, stopping at a roadside inn for delicious local refreshment. Walking and rambling in the hills and valleys of the islands is a year round pleasure. There are many rural locations, which make ideal bases to intimately enjoy the glorious countryside. Again, safe marked routes are to be found in most areas.

Majorca (Mallorca) Pop. 859,289 (2015) Mallorca the largest of the islands. The capital of the island, Palma, and it is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. There are two small islands off the coast of Mallorca: Cabrera (southeast of Palma) and Dragonera (west of Palma). The anthem of Mallorca is "La Balanguera". Like the other Balearic Islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain; it was used by 28.0 million passengers in 2017, increasing every year since 2012. The name derives from Classical Latin insula maior, "larger island". Later, in Medieval Latin, this became Maiorica, "the larger one", in comparison to Menorca, "the smaller one".

Ibiza

Formentera Pop. 10,757

(2012) The main island of Formentera is 19 km (12 miles) long and is located about 6 km (4 miles) south of Ibiza. More specifically Formentera is part of the delimitation of the Balearic Sea which is a northwestern element of the Mediterranean Sea. Its major villages are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola and La Savina. Formentera comprises one municipality, also called Formentera, and Its land area is 83.24 sq km(32.1 sq mi). North of Formentera is the island of Espalmador, which is the second largest island of the municipality, and is itself surrounded by a few minor islets. Espalmador is a tombolo, separated from the main island of Formentera by a shallow sandbar, and during low tide, it is possible for one to wade between the two islands. This area is a popular stopping point for those in yachts heading between Ibiza and Formentera. Formentera

Ibiza (Eivissa) Pop. 143,856

(2017) Ibiza is 150km (93 miles) from the city of Valencia. It is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain. Its largest settlements are Ibiza Town, Santa EulĂ ria des Riu, and Sant Antoni de Portmany. Its highest point, called Sa Talaiassa (or Sa Talaia), is 475m (1,558 feet) above sea level. Ibiza has become well known for its association with nightlife, electronic dance music that originated on the island, and for the summer club scene, all of which attract large numbers of tourists drawn to that type of holiday. Several years before 2010, the island's government and the Spanish Tourist Office had been working to promote more family-oriented tourism, with the police closing down clubs that played music at late night hours, but by 2010 this policy was reversed. Around 2015 it was resumed. Ibiza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the nearby island of Formentera, to its south are called the Pine Islands, or "Pityuses".

Menorca (Minorca) Pop. 91,170

(2017) Menorca is taken from Latin: Insula Minor, later Minorica "smaller island") Its name derives from its size, contrasting it with nearby Majorca. Its highest point, called El Toro or Monte Toro, is 358m(1,175 feet) above sea level.

Baidu sits in the fourth spot and it comes as no surprise. For a country (China) which is highly restricted especially in terms of digital information, users in China use Baidu as if it is the Google of China. According to SimilarWeb, users spend an average of 7.19 minutes a day.

5. yahoo.com - 4.43 Billion monthly visits

6. instagram.com - 2.86 Billion monthly visits

No, Yahoo is not dead (yet). There are still many people who use Yahoo on a daily basis and you will be surprised. Started back on March 2, 1995, Yahoo had lost most of its traffic to Google but is still able to maintain it’s ranking with constant innovation over the years.

Another social media platform, Instagram is fast becoming one of the most visited websites in the world. Nearly every mobile users use Instagram daily and the success of Instagram is proven with the acquisition from Facebook. Did you know that the number of users on Instagram is growing by the day?

7. twitter.com - 3.79 Billion monthly visits

8. wikipedia.org - 5.26 Billion monthly visits

Twitter has recently dropped in ranking due to the popularity issue. However, they are still struggling to maintain the position in this competitive industry. Did you know that Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams?

It is important to note that Wikipedia is one of the best-linked websites (in terms of search engine optimization). Wikipedia started on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and is now available in 299 languages and increasing by the month! Oh, and it's the only 1 in the top 10 that's not '.com'!

9. vk.com - 2.18 Billion monthly visits

10. xvideos.com - 2.79 Billion monthly visits

This two letter word is an online social media network from Russia and social networking service. It is available in several languages but it is especially popular among Russian (speaking) users. It was founded back on January 19, 2007, by Lev Binzumovich Leviev, Pavel Durov, Nikolai Durov and Vyacheslav Mirilashvili.

The highest ranking of the 'Adult' websites, XVideos is a pornographic video sharing and viewing website. Since December 2018, it is the most visited pornographic website. The website is registered to a Czech company who are also the current owners of the Penthouse magazine and its related assets.

Sitting just outside of the top 10, there are a few other popular websites, a few more 'Adult' sites and many variants of google.com (for individual countries etc). Of these, the most well know are the 3 listed below. Although the Average Monthly Visits (shown) may look like they should be included into the top 10, its the totals to date, country rankings, time spent on and the way in which they are visited that all contribute to the rankings, not just average monthly visits.

12. amazon.com 2.84 Billion

24. netflix.com 1.85 Billion

30. ebay.com 1.14 Billion

71.11% of traffic here is obviously from the USA as we will be using amazon.co.uk or amazon.es or any one of the regional variants. Either way, that’s still a huge amount of traffic!

Netflix's initial business model included DVD sales and rental by mail. Netflix then expanded its business in 2007 with the introduction of streaming and on demand media.

An online shopping and auction site, eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in the Autumn of 1995, and became a notable success story of the dot-com bubble.

ESPADEVIDA the best of all worlds. ALL the comforts and privacy of our own home, but situated within a community - sharing amenities, services and leisure activities: it’s the best of all worlds. And soon it will be a reality right here on the Costa Almeria thanks to the ESPADEVIDA Cohousing + Lifestyle project. Loneliness can be a sincere issue for people who live on their own in this area, especially amongst those who have lost their significant other and have no one to share their home with, and even more so in the cooler months of the year when everyone tends to spend more time indoors. But what is the alternative for someone who doesn’t want to live with their adult children, and who is definitely not ready to go into a retirement or nursing home? The perfect solution already exists: co-housing. The co-housing community concept originated in Scandinavia in the early 1960s, and rapidly grew in popularity, as the baby boomer generation creatively looked at how to enjoy the ideal lifestyle. Co-housing projects offer their residents an entire range of benefits; from designs for easy accessibility, to financial, environmental and social sustainability, as well as helping to promote all-round well-being.

We, fellow-baby boomers, have taken it upon ourselves to shine some modern day light on the authentic concept of co-housing. We’ve looked at original co-housing aspects with some state-ofthe-art views, and have created the ESPADEVIDA APARTMENT GALLERY as our original Cohousing+ luxurious living spaces – suitable for anyone, but with a special focus on ourselves, the 50+ generation. Our co-housing+ lifestyle is established with its focus entirely on the comfort of each individual resident, as well as the collective happiness as a community. ESPADEVIDA stands for a sense of society, a comfortable lifestyle where you can live and age with your neighbours, sharing costs, services, (medical) care, and luxurious community areas, while still maintaining your privacy as preferred. Shared areas you can use to host dinners or celebrations, to relax in the spa or one of the pools, or to use for shared (luxury) services on appointment such as masseurs, hairdressers, Spanish teachers, etc. This lifestyle has been completely thought through –it’s created by you; for you. Would you like to build this lifestyle with us? Reserve your apartment now!

Previous studies have even claimed that residents of co-housing projects can live an estimated 10 years longer than people who live in traditional housing.

The ESPADEVIDA APARTMENT GALLERY in Turre, Almería, Andalusia.

The only apparent disadvantage of traditional cohousing in the past has been its explicit exclusivity. But we’re changing that.
