COME WINE WITH ME From brews to booze...

Vino

CALIENTE

Mulled wine is the perfect excuse to drink wine from coffee mugs. Not only does vin chaud warm bitter hearts and cold fingers as frosts arrive, but its coffee-like steam makes it an acceptable day time libation as well. In fact, the steaming red beverage has actually been the excuse for drinking from atypical vessels for millennia. Yes, millennia. Since the Egyptians first deemed warm, spicy wine the elixir of the after life around 300 B.C. mulled wine—in all its forms and flavors—has been keeping humans warm and happy through cold seasons, mugs in hand.

In the 1590s, recipes for mulled wine were first published in English journals, where honey was used to sweeten French Clarets shipped in from Bordeaux. Aristocrats of the time opted for newly-available cane sugar-sweetened mulled wines to flaunt their status. Beyond the obvious buzz, adding spices–classics included pine resin, figs, coriander, and mint–made astringent, oxidized wine palatable, avoiding a costly waste of calories in ancient times. Likewise, even bad wines were often safer for drinking than water, making warmth an added bonus.

Along with Cleopatra, Greek philosopher Hippocrates was known for prescribing spiced wine as a medicinal tonic, and Pliny the Elder also wrote about the merits of warm and spicy spirits known as Piment during the Roman era. During the Middle Ages, Europeans often referred to mulled wine as “Hippocras,” in memory of the famed Hippocrates, filling cauldrons of wine with long pepper, bay leaves, and cardamom, which were then strained through conical filters invented by the famed Greek. Even Sangria used to be hot!

The term “mulled” simply means warm and spiced, and that ambiguity along with Europe’s vast wine traditions means there’s incredible variety even in “traditional” mulled wine additives. Three ingredients remain common across traditions: red wine, baking spices like cloves, and citrus.

6

Ingredients for a perfect Spanish Vino Caliente:

Preparation

The Spanish love to use a fruity Tempranillo for their mulled wine, which gives it a rich, spicy taste. The fact that they use Brandy de Jerez makes it sweeter, which thickens it even more when the wine boils down. All in all, a wonderful drink that can drive away any chill!

• To begin, pour the wine into a pot and add in the lemon peel, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut the vanilla bean in half and add it into the pot.

• 1 clementine • 4 strips of lemon peel • 2 tbsp. sugar • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1 vanilla bean • 100ml / cup Brandy de Jerez • 1 bottle of Tempranillo*

• Slice the clementine with the peel on and add it into the wine, along with the Brandy (any brandy can be used if you can’t get Brandy de Jerez). Let it simmer for 35 minutes, remove from the heat, and serve.

• Once the mixture boils, turn it down to a simmer.

*Toscar Tempranillo is recommend here: This Tempranillo makes for easy drinking and delicious mulled wine, thanks to its flavours of cherries and strawberries.

AT THE MOVIES Films to look out for in the coming months. COMING SOON

Stan & Ollie. In theatres December 28th, 2018. Biopics are, and pretty much always have been, a major staple of the autumn and winter movie seasons, which is when studios tend to put out movies that they hope can garner some love during awards season. While it's early to say, and it looks like there is going to be a lot of fierce competition this year, this biopic about the legendary comedic duo of Laurel and Hardy looks like it has Oscar love written all over it. SUMMARY Stan and Ollie will tell the story of the group's farewell tour in 1953. This is the first time that the story of Laurel and Hardy is being told on the big screen. With their best days long since past, the pair embark on a variety tour of Britain and Ireland. They will face the pressures of a hectic schedule, but that comes with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda). During the tour, despite quite a bit of hardship, their love for one another and their fondness for performing helps to get them by.

8

Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly star as the famed comedians. This is taking an interesting approach, choosing to focus on the duo's later years, as opposed to being a more traditional rise and fall type biopic that chronicles their entire journey. Both actors look great in their respective roles, but Reilly went through one heck of a transformation here. The trailer itself takes us on an almost complete emotional journey, with many of the story beats laid out quite plainly. It will be fascinating to see that play out over the course of roughly two hours when the movie actually hits theaters. This helps cap off a pretty amazing season for John C. Reilly. Not only does he have this coming out, but he's also earning a lot of praise for his western The Sisters Brothers. Plus, he's reprising his lead role in Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet later this year. To top it all off, he's reuniting with Will Ferrell for Holmes and Watson in November. Reilly is having himself a moment, that's for sure. Could he be adding Oscar nomination to this year's list of accomplishments?

NEW ECO Badge Although obtaining and displaying the Eco Badge is currently only voluntary, it is becoming less of a choice on account of the benefits, as cities and towns start to use the classification to reduce pollution causing congestion. Early in October of this year, Madrid restricted access to parts of the city, preventing more polluting vehicles from entering, with only those displaying the eco-friendly badge allowed access, or a charge was levied on the vehicle owner, think of it more of a congestion charge, rather than a fine.

In order to obtain your eco sticker, you have to go to the post office with the vehicle’s registration certificate, the license plate number and ID of the owner or the authorisation of the owner if you are obtaining it on their behalf. The national vehicle database will be able to ascertain whether your vehicle is suitable for one of the four categories, Zero emissions, Eco, C and B. You can also check the categorisation yourself by entering the registration number on the website set up by the DGT by visiting: www.dgt.es/es/seguridad-vial/distintivo-ambiental/

It is also becoming a requirement in order to sell your vehicle through some companies, and so the need is certainly increasing without mandatory enforcement. The origin of the labels resides in the National Air Quality Plan 20132016. Its purpose is to classify vehicles according to the pollution they are emitting. Their purchase is possible at any post office, although you may have to wait a while depending on your vehicle due to the high demand.

Once you have your sticker you then have to put it in the correct place on the windscreen, which , according to the DGT, is the lower right corner of the front windshield, as you’re looking out, so the ITV would be at the top right, the eco sticker at the bottom right. If this is not possible, any visible site is accepted, but may cause problems if it is not in the exact or visible location where observers might check.

You can find more info and additional stories by visiting their website www.n332.es or liking their page on Facebook/N332. They also have a new magazine “N332 Road watch” available for download as PDF for just 2 euros. 10

THINGS TO DO & places to see...

Nijar At about 60 kms from the Mojácar area towards Almeria, under 1 hour in the car down the E15, Nijar is a small & pretty village nestled in the hills inland from the Cabo de Gata and, although steeped in History, it is probably more popular & well know recently for its pottery and crafts.

BACKGROUND

Níjar has been described as one of the most picturesque towns in the whole of Spain. It therefore comes highly recommended as a place to see and should be on any self respecting visitor's itinerary. The visit is made all the more pleasant thanks to the many reasonably priced bars and restaurants offering delicious local dishes. There are also affordable hostels and hotels in and around Níjar. A visit to Níjar guarantees the traveller a flavour of 'real' Andalusia without the need to overspend on the trip - unless of course, you are tempted to buy up all the brightly coloured rugs and blankets and the beautifully glazed traditional pottery.

Local Crafts

All of the above, together with a good tourist trade, keep the population of around 15,000 busy and fruitfully employed within a buoyant economy. It is not unusual to hear the familiar clattering sound of the weaving machine making the blankets and rugs that have become so typical of the area. The people are particularly proud of their Níjar pottery, which still carries the remarkable Arabic design and colours from centuries gone by. There are five ceramic workshops in the lower part of the town and such is the fame of this time honoured tradition that many artists and craftsmen have come from many parts of the world to live and work here. This influx of outside creative talent has had the effect of inspiring local potters to experiment with new designs and colours, which is bringing even more success and popularity to this flourishing industry.

12

Literary Fame & Changing Times

Níjar was not always the lively and prosperous town that it is today. To enrich your visit and understand something of the hardships and misery that people suffered during the time Franco's dictatorship until his death in 1975, it is worth reading the short book, 'Campos de Níjar' by Juan Goytisolo. Born in Barcelona in 1931, Goytisolo, one of Spain's finest writers, wrote 'Campos de Níjar' after travelling to Almería during the 1950's. His description of the people and their life during those very difficult times is a stark contrast to the way things are today. This book is a fascinating insight into the incredible changes that have taken place in a very short time in Spain and especially Andalusia. The book is available in English translation from Amazon.

Historic Buildings

In the main square, La Plaza de la Constitucion, is the Mudejar style 16th century Parish Church of Santa Maria. The tower which was built for defence rather than for religious reasons was constructed first, followed later by the rest of the building. Inside the church is a fine example of the Mudejar woodwork craftsmanship, as well as a wonderful image by Alonso Cano of 'la Purisima Concepcion Inmaculada'. The impressive stone eagle on the back wall of the tower was commissioned by Carlos I.

QUITE INTERESTING fun facts and figures...

the Winter

SOLSTICE

Amid the whirl of the holiday season, many are vaguely aware of the approach of the winter solstice, but how much do you really know about it? Whether you’re a fan of winter or just wish it would go away, here are 10 things to note - or even celebrate - about the solstice. IT HAPPENS ON FRIDAY 21st DECEMBER THIS YEAR. The date of the winter solstice varies from year to year, and can fall anywhere between December 20 and December 23, with the 21st or 22nd being the most common dates. The reason for this is because the tropical year—the time it takes for the sun to return to the same spot relative to Earth—is different from the calendar year. The next solstice occurring on December 20th will not happen until 2080, and the next December 23rd solstice will not occur until 2303! IT HAPPENS AT A SPECIFIC, BRIEF MOMENT. Not only does the solstice occur on a specific day, but it also occurs at a specific time of day, corresponding to the instant the North Pole is aimed furthest away from the sun on the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis. This is also the time when the sun shines directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. In 2018, this moment occurs at 23:22 p.m. (Local time GMT +1). THE LONGEST NIGHT & SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR FOR THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. As most are keenly aware, daylight hours grow shorter and shorter as the solstice approaches, and begin to slowly lengthen afterward. It’s no wonder that the day of the solstice is referred to in some cultures as the "shortest day" or "extreme of winter." ANCIENT CULTURES VIEWED IT AS A TIME OF DEATH & REBIRTH. The seeming death of the light and very real threat of starvation over the winter months would have weighed heavily on early societies, who held varied solstice celebrations and rites meant to herald the return of the Sun and hope for new life. Scandinavian and Germanic pagans lit fires and may have burned Yule logs as a symbolic means of welcoming back the light. Cattle and other animals were slaughtered around midwinter, followed by feasting on what was the last fresh meat for several months. IT MARKS THE DISCOVERY OF NEW & STRANGE WORLDS. The Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth on Dec 21st, 1620, to found a society that would allow them to worship freely. On the same day in 1898, Pierre & Marie Curie discovered radium, ushering in an atomic age & on Dec 21st, 1968, the Apollo 8 spacecraft launched, becoming the first manned moon mission. 16

STONEHENGE IS ALIGNED TO THE SUNSET. The primary axis of the megalithic monument is oriented to the setting sun, while Newgrange, another structure built around the same time as Stonehenge, lines up with the winter solstice sunrise. The purpose of Stonehenge is still subject to debate, but its importance on the winter solstice continues into the modern era, as thousands of people gather there every year to celebrate the occasion. ANCIENT ROMANS CELEBRATED REVERSALS AT THE MIDWINTER FESTIVAL OF SATURNALIA. The holiday, which began as a festival to honour the agricultural god Saturn, was held to commemorate the dedication of his temple in 497 BCE. It quickly became a time of widespread revelry and debauchery in which societal roles were overturned, with masters serving their slaves and servants being allowed to insult their masters. Saturnalia was gradually replaced by Christmas throughout the Roman Empire, but many of its customs survive as Christmas traditions. SOME TRADITIONS HOLD THAT DARK SPIRITS WALK THE EARTH ON THE WINTER SOLSTICE. The Iranian festival of Yalda is celebrated on the longest night of the year. In pre-Islamic times, it heralded the birth of Mithra, the ancient sun god, and his triumph over darkness. Zoroastrian lore holds that evil spirits wander the earth and the forces of the destructive spirit Ahriman are strongest on this long night. People are encouraged to stay up most of the night in the company of one another, eating, talking, and sharing poetry and stories, in order to avoid any brushes with dark entities. Beliefs about the presence of evil on the longest night are also echoed in Celtic and Germanic folklore. SOME THOUGHT THE WORLD WOULD END ON THE 2012 WINTER SOLSTICE. December 21st, 2012 corresponds to the date 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar used by the ancient Mayans, marking the end of a 5126-year cycle. Some people feared this juncture would bring about the end of the world or some other cataclysmic event. Others took a different view and believed it heralded the birth of a new era of deep transformation for Earth and its inhabitants. In the end, neither of these things appeared to occur, leaving the world to turn through winter solstices indefinitely, or at least as long as the Sun lasts.

Every four years, the Lions—selected from the national sides of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland—head to the southern hemisphere to do battle with New Zealand, Australia or South Africa. 125 Years of the British and Irish Lions covers the entire period of the Lions' existence, from the first recorded rugby tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1888 to the 2013 tour to Australia. In this comprehensive book, authors Clem and Greg Thomas trace the origins of the Lions, track the team's development and investigate the social and political issues that have helped to shape one of the world's most formidable touring forces. They relive every Lions tour and Test match and celebrate the key moments that have made the Lions such a magical part of rugby folklore. 125 Years of the British and Irish Lions includes colourful recollections from and insightful profiles of some of the most celebrated members of Lions teams, highlighting the fulfilment, pride and passion that every British or Irish player feels upon being selected to play as a Lion.

The 1971 British & Irish Lions tour of Australia and New Zealand has gone down in history as one of the greatest of all time. When the enigmatic Carwyn James was appointed as coach, he faced a gruelling schedule for a twenty-four-match slog around New Zealand, which would include a four-Test series against the All Blacks, the best side on the planet. No Lions team had ever defeated the All Blacks in a Test series. Since 1904, six Lions sides had travelled to New Zealand and all had returned home with their tails between their legs. When Lions Roared delves into the very heart of that famous summer as Lions, All Blacks and provincial players recount their memories to bring to life one of the most celebrated tours in rugby history - one that changed the game forever and continues to resonate powerfully to this day.

Warren Gatland's In the Line of Fire is the ultimate chronicle of 2017's remarkable Lions tour to New Zealand - home of the fearsome All Blacks, the double world champions - which culminated in an historic and nerve-shredding series draw. The book is the Head Coach's candid record of the perspiration and inspiration, the withering ferocity, and the turbulent peaks and troughs which go hand-in-hand with one of sport's toughest challenges. It gives rugby fans an unparalleled front-row seat with the squad and coaching team during every facet of preparing for and executing a successful tour on the opposite side of the planet, recounting intriguing details on everything from pre-tour planning and strategy, to on-tour experiences, analysis and decision-making. It all adds up to a thrillingly definitive exposition and post-mortem of a mindblowing six weeks in the cauldron which forged the mighty All Blacks.

LIFESTYLE Health & Well-being

A vegetarian does not eat meat or fish, but there are different types of vegetarian. Some consume eggs and dairy products, while the strictest kind, vegans, eat no animal produce at all, including honey. Some people call themselves vegetarians, but they consume fish. It is not necessary to eat meat to get all the nutrients needed for good health. A person who chooses not to eat meat may enjoy better health, because they will eat more plant-based foods, and because they may be more active in making healthy choices. A vegetarian diet has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer, leading to a longer life expectancy. It may also lead to weight loss.

22

HISTORY

The earliest records of vegetarianism come from the sixth century B.C.E., in India, Greece and the Greek civilization in Southern Italy, and it stemmed from a desire not to harm animals. Early traces of vegetarianism in Europe disappeared with the introduction of Christianity to the Roman Empire. Many orders of monks in medieval Europe either banned or limited meat consumption as a gesture of personal sacrifice or abstinence, but they ate fish. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, v e g e t a r i a n i s m reappeared in Western society. As research continues to support the benefits of a vegetarian diet, more people could become vegetarian in the future.

RISKS & BENEFITS:

Risks

It is important to source nutrients including iron on a vegetarian diet, as these may be in short supply without animal products in the diet. A vegetarian diet that is heavy on snacks and junk food can still be high in calories and people who do not eat meat or fish may lack certain nutrients, especially if they are not consuming eggs or dairy products.

Benefits Apart from health considerations, people become vegetarian for a range of reasons. Producing vegetarian food is more ecologically sustainable, and it reduces damage to the environment. Many people also stop eating meat for ideological, ethical, or religious reasons but often, the focus is on health.

Nutrients that can be lacking include: • Iron • Calcium • Protein • Vitamin D • Vitamin B12 • Zinc

• A lower body weight: A study of 38,000 people showed that fish eaters, vegetarians, and vegans had a lower body mass index (BMI) than meat-eaters.

Good sources of iron are sea vegetables, such as nori, fortified breakfast cereals, legumes, such as beans and lentils, dried fruit, such as figs, and broccoli, among others. Consuming these with foods high in vitamin C, for example, citrus fruits or tomatoes, will help the body absorb the iron.

• Healthier cholesterol levels: Scientists have shown that one specific vegetarian diet can lower cholesterol almost as well as treatment with medication. Levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol that causes clogging in coronary arteries, fell by almost 30 percent in participants who followed the diet. This was only slightly lower than those who used lovastatin alongside their usual diet. The diet consisted of almonds, soy proteins, high-fiber foods such as oats and barley, and a special margarine with plant sterols, found in leafy green vegetables and vegetable oils.

Milk and yogurt are important sources of calcium. Vegetarians who are avoiding dairy products can get calcium from tofu, fortified soy milk, green leafy vegetables, and dried figs. Vegans and vegetarians have a higher risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency compared with people who consume animal-based products. The human body cannot use the plantbased form of the vitamin. Fortified foods are recommended for those who do not consume eggs or dairy products, and a supplement may be necessary. Becoming a vegetarian will not guarantee good health or a healthy diet. Anyone is at risk of poor health if they consume too many calories, unhealthy snack foods, too many refined carbohydrates, whole milk dairy products, and junk foods, whether meat-based or not so always eat healthy, whatever your preference.

• Lower risk of developing cancer: Research shows that, overall, vegetarians have a lower risk of many different types of cancer, compared with meat eaters. However, the same study found a higher incidence of colon cancer among vegetarians. • A vegetarian diet has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular risk factors. Studies have found that the more meat people consume, the higher their risk of type 2 diabetes. • Vegetarian food tends to be lower in fat, especially saturated fats, and higher in fiber, than animal-based foods. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that a vegetarian diet can benefit people of all ages: "Appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes." However, these benefits will not immediately follow a decision to stop eating meat. Like any diet, a vegetarian diet should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and excludes unhealthy choices, such as smoking and drinking excess alcohol.

Vegetarian options: Many restaurants these days have vegetarian options on their menus but some are often limited. 'El Nido Veggie Friendly' on Mojácar Playa however, caters for vegetarians & vegans alike, why not visit them & see their varied menu.

“What matters most is that each picture stands on its own, with its own place and feeling.” Steve McCurry

PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry is an American photographer, freelancer and photojournalist and you may know him for his most famous photo of the "Afghan Girl", the girl with the piercing green eyes that periodically appears on the cover of National Geographic. McCurry has photographed many assignments for National Geographic and has been a member of Magnum since 1986. His love of photography came when he was taking photos for his college newspaper whilst studying at Pennsylvania State University. He graduated in 1974 in theatre arts but had planned to major in cinematography and film making. In 1978, he left America to freelance in India. After a year working there, McCurry travelled to northern Pakistan where he was told about the war across the border in Afghanistan. This was the kick start of his career when, disguised in Afghani garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled areas of Afghanistan just before the Soviet invasion. "As soon as I crossed the border, I came across about 40 houses and a few schools that were just bombed out," he says. "They were literally destroying whole villages with helicopter gunships." He left with rolls of film sewn into his turban and stuffed in his socks and underwear. These images were

subsequently published by The New York Times, TIME and various other publications and won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. In 2016, McCurry was accused of extensively manipulating his images with Photoshop and by other means, removing individuals and other elements which has obviously sparked controversy, especially in the photojournalist world, as it is deemed to "faking" a real story and or even creating "art" from life and not true photojournalism. Either-way, McCurry has apologised if he, or any of his extensive on site team, have done this and has been quoted as saying “going forward, I am committed to only using the program in a minimal way, even for my own work taken on personal trips.” Personally, as long as it isnt too extensive, I say editing is an integral part, just dont falsify the message or story that the photo is aimed at telling. While lighting and composition count, the best photographs are those that create a connection. McCurry, known for his heartfelt photographs of citizens around the globe, knows that in capturing universal human elements, his work remains timeless. You can do no wrong imitating his style but travel light, be patient and good luck.

Wine Not Mojácar is a winery and delicatessen shop and bar which offers a cured selection of wines and gourmet products from Spain in a unique environment in Mojácar. We want our customers to have an unforgettable experience, that is why you can have most of our wines by the glass, we want you to enjoy the best one for you!

Christmas is coming! Wine Not Mojácar offers a wide variety of wines, cavas and Spanish delicatessen to make your own gift box for this Christmas so this month we want to introduce to you one of our best Cavas from Gramona Cellars.

GRAMONA CELLARS. Artisans of time Located in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Barcelona. The cellar has been working their land continuously since mid-19th century. The fifth generation of a wine making family, consider their experience, and the humility that comes with it, to be their greatest asset.

Estates: La Plana, Mas Escorpí and Font Jui La Plana was the first parcel of the family, founded by Pau Batlle in 1881. A century later the fifth generation of Gramona´s family expanded the holding with two more parcels: first Mas Escorpí and later Font Jui. At the start of the 21st century, each of the family parcels were restructured according to organic as well as biodynamic growing principles, with the wish to conserve the legacy of their forefathers.

Organic Viticulture. Based on careful observation and the management of the factors which influence the terroir and its habitat. They do not apply chemical herbicides or pesticides. but instead they used natural resources, with the primary aim of maintaining a balance in the environment. Through biodynamics, which goes one step beyond organic growing, life is breathed into the vineyards and seek to raise levels of biodiversity: preserving spontaneous ground cover in order to obtain spongy soils, applying plant-based infusions and decoctions to avoid pest infestations, and they make their own animal and vegetal compost and preparations.

Production. Each step involved in the winemaking process is VERY CURED, from the vineyards to the bottle. The grapes are picked by hand, go onto a sorting table, are transferred by gravity, and lightly pressed.

Artisanal process. The excellence of a great sparkling wine is achieved over time. The longer the wine is kept alive and fresh, the longer it can be kept ageing with yeasts. The ageing will bring complexity, balance, elegance, and finesse, and it will be it education. its experience in life. This maintenance and education will require an absolute respecto for

traditional work in the land, the winemaking, and the ageing.

Gramona III Lustros · Brut Nature GRAN RESERVA Grapes: 75% Xarel·lo / 25% Macabeu Production (Artisanal process): Botlles aged on their lees for 96 months. Use of riddling racks. Manual riddling and disgorgement.

Tasting Notes: APPEARANCE: Straw hue with golden highlights. NOSE: Intense with clear notes of maturity under a constant veil of freshness. Baked apple and sweet pears. Ripe citrus, grapefruit peel. Faded flowers and a herbal backdrop reminiscent of fennel and rosemary. The ageing notes run through a gamut of aromas which includes hazelnuts, pastries, toast, brioche and toffee. The cava becomes more and more expressive as it opens up in the glass. PALATE: Powerful on entry with great structure. The carbon dioxide is fine and creamy. Loads of candied fruit balanced by the notes from ageing. The balsamic aromas come through again. Lively, refreshing finish on the palate. The aftertaste is never-ending. FOOD PAIRINGS: This is very much a cava for enjoying with good food. With its balance of structure, creaminess and freshness, it works well with all food types and recipes. Appetizers, foie gras, terrines and cold meats. Seafood and fish. Poultry and even rice dishes, stews and hotpots.

Gramona Argent · Brut GRAN RESERVA Grapes: 100% Chardonnay Production (Artisanal process): Bottles aged on their lees for a minimum of 55 months. Use of riddling racks. Manual riddling and disgorgement. Dosage: moderate, 6 grams per litre.

Tasting notes: APPEARANCE: Pale yellow with golden highlights. NOSE Elegance and subtlety, taking the form of fruit – pears, golden apples and a touch of citrus, lemon peel. White flowers, fennel. Very fine toasted notes: toasted almonds. PALATE: Fresh on entry, nice volume on the palate and fine, creamy bubbles. Dry finish with good acidity. On the aftertaste, we find fruit and nutty aromas. FOOD PAIRINGS: All types of seafood, especially oysters. Also with cheeses, charcuterie and foies. This cava will be enjoyed with the most exquisite dishes.

FOOD GLORIOUS

FOOD Roscón de Reyes | THREE KINGS CAKE Roscón de Reyes - "twisted roll of kings"- is mainly consumed on Three Kings Day in Spain (6th of January, day when the exchange take place). However it's origin it's little related to Christian lore, it's much older and has pagan roots.

Ingredients • 350g of baking wheat flour • 25g of fresh yeast • 125ml of fresh milk • 100g of sugar • 75g butter (left at room temperature for soft malleable texture) • 1 whole egg + 1 egg yolk • orange zest • 1 tbs of rum • 1 tsp of orange blossom essence (fit for food) • a pinch of salt • To decorate: candied fruit, sugar, almonds, etc

method • Put the fresh yeast in warm milk and dissolve with your fingers. Leave for 15 minutes so the yeast activates.

• When the dough has grown enough remove from the bowl and knead for one minute to remove the air from it.

• Put flour in a bowl. In the centre, place the orange zest and sugar. • When the milk and yeast are ready add it to the centre of the flour

• Form a ball with the dough. With both thumbs make a hole in the middle and enlarge to give the roscón de reyes it's shape. It must have more or less the size of the baking tray you will be using

• Stir the center with a spatula, slowly incorporating the flour on the bottom and sides of the bowl until a thin paste forms, however flour must remain on the walls of the bowl

• Line the tray with baking paper and put the dough on it. It's likely it will shrink a little. Spread it evenly on the tray until it has a good size. If the dough sticks on the baking paper it doesn't matter.

• Add butter, orange blossom essence, rum, egg yolk & the salt

• Cover the dough with another sheet of baking paper and let it leaven in a warm place until it's size doubles. It should take between 30 and 60 minutes.

• Mix well with the spatula until you have a sticky dough, incorporating the flour on the walls of the bowl • Sprinkle the table you will be working on with the rest of the flour. Put the roscón de reyes dough and knead. It will stick to the surface at first, but as you knead it it will stop sticking. If it's impossible, add some more flour (only if strictly necessary). The dough has to be slightly sticky, but if you slide it quickly through the surface it mustn't adhere to it • When the dough is ready shape into a ball. Sprinkle some flour in a large bowl and put the dough in it. Cover with cling film and put the bowl in a warm place, perhaps a room with a heater. The mass must double it's volume, and it can take from 2 to 3 hours depending on the temperature. 40

• Once it's leavened, with a brush paint the roscón de reyes with egg batter and decorate to your taste • Put the tray in the oven for 25 minutes at 160º C (302º F) until it gets a golden color and remove from the oven. • Let it cool before cutting or filling it. • Once cool, you can slice the cake horizontally and fill with whipped cream and add additional decoration to the top before serving.

Cocinas El Real y ConstrucciĂłn A warm welcome to all our customers old and new. Cocinas El Real y Construccion was born out of a culmination of our previous businesses. Some of you may know me as the The Full Swing, others may remember Ferreteria El Real, both being based in Antas on the Poligono Industrial El Real. However, Dave and I disappeared for 2 years, closing both businesses and moving to Bulgaria to adopt our beautiful twin girls Charlotte and Gini, who are now 5 years old. How our world has changed, juggling work and family now, after previously working 7 days a week, sometimes 10 hours a day. I still find it hard. On our return to Spain we started to work again in the construction industry. Slowly but surely, we have rebuilt our business. Based in Los Gallardos, we have a small showroom for kitchens and bathrooms where you can come and discuss your requirements with Zoe. We offer a free quotation service and 3D design for kitchens and bathrooms and supply nothing but the best quality in Spanish kitchens by BC3 to suit all budgets. Laminates, polilaminates, lacas and solid wood doors, as well as a variety of handles, accessories, gadgets, electrical and gas appliances. Tiling, electrics, gas installation, yeso, painting and decorating as well as a full carpentry service are all available such that we can complete your project from start to finish. Bathroom renovations seem to be extremely popular now and we have a great selection of products to offer to give you plenty of inspiration to create your own individual space, including Gamma, Grupo Royo, Roca, Gala, Grohe, BaĂąos 10, Ducha Lux and many more. Tiles by Pamesa, Argenta, Keraben, Dune give a fantastic range of colours and design options.

However, bathrooms and kitchens are not our limit. There is nothing that we cannot put our hand to now as our team is growing and has the skills needed to support any project. Plans for extensions or full builds, when needed can be arranged through our architect and planning permissions can also be arranged by us. Personally, I love to see a project change and develop to include both ideas from the client and myself. Taking the customer through their options, helping to guide them towards a design that is efficient in use, practical, within their budget whilst keeping in mind the aesthetic look is all part of my job. Communication with the customer is key, whether they are living here or having work completed on a holiday home and living away. Dave Moxham, my husband, manages the projects on site working alongside our super team which includes Ian Croucher, Pedro and Adil. We also have a good chain of permanent local suppliers for materials, including tiles, sanitary ware, windows, doors, wood, rejas, fires, plumbing and electrical as well as electrical appliances by Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Balay, Cata, Mepamsa and Franke. So if you have a project in mind please include us in you plans and come and have a chat at the office in Los Gallardos or call to make an appointment to us visit you on site. Zoe Rylett.

Now the hustle and bustle of the summer months are over it is nice to get away in the quieter time but while the weather is still good. If you like a quiet site in the country without travelling too far then you will enjoy Camping Sierra Maria, Carretera Maria Orce km7, AL 9101, 04838 Maria, Almeria (Tel: 620 231 223). The camping is situated in the heart of the Sierra Maria – Los Velez Natural Park in the north of the province of Almeria. From Antas (Almeria) it is approximately 93 kms taking the A7 then the A91 towards Granada that runs into the A92. Take exit number112. Continue on the A317, 5km past the town of Maria, keep left onto the AL9101. Then follow the camping signs. The site has both shaded and sunbathing areas amidst the Pine trees. There are also a number of Bungalows available for rental. There is a Bar/Restaurant 500 meters from the reception which is open from 9.00am for Breakfast and Tapas etc. Next to the Bar is a Salt Water Pool and other facilities include a shop and a laundry area and children’s play area. Camping Sierra Maria is open all year and is surrounded by valleys and steep hills, whose peaks can be covered with snow during the winter. They also accept the ACSI discount card here and dogs are permitted. As well as the routes you can see the points of interest on the various walks. There are also cycle routes from the camping. Other places to visit from here include Velez Rubio, Velez Blanco, Maria, Orce, Huescar and Puebla de Don Fadrique.

It is a large building, more like a Cathedral, that can be seen from the road when entering the town. It is beautifully decorated and well worth a visit. A change in the

RULES New Golf Rules for 2019: All You Need To Know

The R&A and USGA have revealed the new golf rules to be implemented on 1st January 2019 and there are some huge changes set to come into play. Golf’s two governing bodies revealed proposals for changes to come into place last year but these new finalised rules are slightly different – that’s because there’s been ‘an extensive review that included a request for feedback from the global golf community on the proposed changes’. The changes have been brought in to modernise the game. There have been four major changes to the proposals they brought out last year. TAKING A DROP The first is the dropping procedure. Last year it was proposed that golfers could drop from any height above an inch. This has been changed to knee height. So from 1st Jan 2019, when taking relief golfers will now drop from knee height – no longer shoulder height. RELIEF After the proposal last year for golfers to measure relief by 20 inches or 80 inches, the standard one or two club lengths will remain. Golfers can take relief using the longest club in their bag, barring the putter. DOUBLE HIT There will no longer be a penalty for double-hitting a shot. Golfers will simply count the single stroke they took to strike the ball, rather than counting two shots for hitting the ball twice. 50

OUT OF BOUNDS The Out of Bounds rule is set to undergo huge changes in a bid to speed up play. From 1st Jan 2019, golf clubs will be allowed to install a local rule that golfers can drop a new ball in the vicinity of where their ball has gone out of bounds, with a two stroke penalty. So no more walking back to the tee – if the course you’re playing installs this new local rule. This is only for club level, it doesn’t cover professional or elite level competitions. As well as those four changes to the proposals, here are some other major changes that were proposed last year and WILL BE coming in on 1st Jan 2019: ACCIDENTAL MOVING There will be no penalty for accidentally moving your ball on the putting green or when looking for it. A player is not responsible for causing a ball to move unless it is “virtually certain” that they did. FLAGSTICK The flagstick no longer has to be attended or removed when putting and there will be no penalty if a golfer hits an unattended flagstick in the hole. GREEN REPAIRS Golfers will be allowed to repair spike marks as well as other damage on the putting green. There is also no penalty for merely touching the line of a putt. CLUB GROUNDING Golfers can now touch the ground with their club in a hazard

and can move loose impediments in a hazard without penalty. As well as that, golfers can move loose impediments in bunkers and will not be penalised for generally grounding their club away from their ball.

LOST BALLS The 5 minute golf ball search time has been scrapped. From 1st Jan 2019, golfers will be allowed only 3 minutes to search for a strayed golf ball.

You still cannot ground your club when playing a bunker shot. An unplayable lie may be taken in a bunker, with a drop out for two strokes.

ALL IN THE... TIMING Golf’s governing bodies are also encouraging ready golf in stroke play and recommend golfers take no longer than 40 seconds over a shot.

PLAYER INTEGRITY Player integrity will be relied on to the point where a player’s “reasonable judgement” will be trusted on things like estimating/measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance.

THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF GOLF DON’T THROW YOUR CLUBS Everybody gets angry or frustrated on the course. Sometimes you might even get enraged. This doesn’t give you an excuse to act like a gorilla and start throwing your clubs all over the place. Not only could you hurt another player, but you look like a Grade-A moron. The best thing you could do is take the high road. Besides, golf courses have the right to kick you out if seen throwing clubs. Take some deep breaths, swallow your pride and take your triple bogey like a man. GOLFERS SHOULD BE SEEN, NOT HEARD Not only is golf a game of etiquette and respect, it’s also really freakin’ difficult. While golfing great Lee Trevino follows the “grip it and rip it” philosophy, most golfers like to take their time and concentrate on each shot. That’s why silence is golden while your playing partners are addressing the ball. After he or she has struck their shot, feel free to talk as much as you want. But that doesn’t give you an excuse to poke fun of others, which we’ll address next. DON’T MAKE FUN OF PLAYERS Did I mention that golf is really hard? Chances are you’ll witness — or take — a handful of embarrassing shots during a round. Skulled wedges, chili-dipped chips and all-around whiffs are commonplace on most courses. It is commonly understood that laughing, mocking, or otherwise degrading your playing partners after a poor shot is disrespectful. Unless, of course, you’re one of my lunatic friends and have absolutely zero conscience. Seriously, those guys are animals. NEW BALLS ARE ATTRACTED TO WATER While this might not help you with golf etiquette, it will definitely help you when deciding whether or not you want to break out a brand new golf ball at difficult par 4 water hole. It’s known amongst golfers that new golf balls are attracted to water hazards. It’s also known that the magnetic pull towards the water is directly related to how much the golf ball costs. So if you step up to the signature water hole at your local golf course, think twice before opening up a new sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls, because more often than not, it will end up in the water. (You know who you are TG from TSB Golf)

For all the details visit:

www.randa.org Chances are they’re trying to walk around their playing partners’ putting lines. This is just one of many instances when it pays to stay aware of your surroundings. Messing up someone’s putting line might not be as big a deal nowadays — since spikeless golf shoes are the norm — but you also don’t want to give your playing partner any excuse after he misses that four-footer. LET FASTER GROUPS PLAY THROUGH This is by far one of the most overlooked unwritten rules in the game. It is common courtesy to allow the group behind you to play ahead if that group is playing faster than yours. Not only does this allow your group to maintain a comfortable pace, it also gets that annoying group behind you off your tail. Everybody wins, and you avoid an awkward conversation at the 19th hole after your round. By the way, it is never acceptable to “fire a quick warning shot” by hitting into the group in front of you. You aren’t proving anything by harming a fellow golfer. Just stop it. A GOOD SHOT WILL LIKELY BE FOLLOWED BY A BAD SHOT This is one of those unwritten rules that every golfer learns very quickly in their golfing careers. Golfers across the world fear the shot directly after a good one because they know a bad one is coming. So if you walk up to the tee and hit the best drive of your life 300 yards right down the middle of the fairway, beware of that next shot. By the way, enjoy this wonderful game. KEEP RAKES IN THE BUNKER This rule might differ from one course to the next, but the most common place to keep the bunker rake is inside the bunker. This all but prevents a golf ball from rolling into the rough and against a rake, which is more a nuisance than anything. Unless your course has a different local rule, keep things simple and just leave the rake in the sand. If you are worried about your golf ball landing next to a rake in the bunker, don’t. The Rules of Golf allow you to move the rake before you hit your shot. NEXT EDITION: THE TOP 10 UNWRITTEN RULES

CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF Just because you’re outdoors and on a golf course doesn’t mean you get to turn into a slob. Be sure to replace your divots, fix your ball marks on the putting green, rake the bunkers, and replace the flagstick on every green. Your mother doesn’t work at the course (most likely). One of the worst things you can do it leave your trash, beer cans etc laying around on the golf course. Leave the course beautiful as it was intended. So be sure to practice good manners and clean up after yourself like big boys and girls. DON’T WALK IN THE PUTTING LINE This might be tough to remember at first, but it is usually poor form to walk on the imaginary line between someone’s golf ball and the hole when putting. Have you ever seen the pros on TV prance around the green like they’re doing some weird tribal dance? 51

NEWS: Jones names 36-man England squad for autumn internationals. Danny Cipriani has been overlooked by Eddie Jones once again after being left out of England's squad. He had made a strong start to the season at Gloucester and was named Gallagher Premiership player of month for September.

Manu Tuilagi has overcome a succession of injuries to win inclusion and he will be competing with Ben Te'o - who has not played this season because of thigh and ankle problems - for selection in midfield.

Owen Farrell and George Ford are present as the recognised flyhalves, although Henry Slade and Alex Lozowski provide cover in the position and for the first time in Jones' reign, Dylan Hartley must share the leadership duties with Farrell after the pair were named co-captains.

England's loosehead prop resources have been decimated by Mako Vunipola's absence due to a calf issue and the international retirement of Joe Marler, leaving Alex Hepburn and Ben Moon as the only recognised options in the position.

Ben Morgan has been picked for the first time since the 2015 World Cup as a result of the crisis at number eight that has seen Billy Vunipola and Sam Simmonds ruled out of the entire series by injury and Nathan Hughes miss all but the final match due to suspension. Wing Chris Ashton is present despite having yet to make his debut for Sale with his 7-week ban for a tip-tackle elapsing this weekend. 52

The squad contains eight uncapped players and confirms the decline of veterans Dan Cole and James Haskell, who have been omitted once more. Jones' outlook on a punishing series that opens against the Springboks at Twickenham on November 3 remains positive despite missing 18 players to injury, suspension and retirement. Jones said: "I'm really happy with the squad. We can only control what we can control and injuries have happened."

TRAVEL REPORT

CORSICA Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 18 regions of France. It is located southeast of the French mainland and west of the Italian Peninsula, with the nearest land mass being the Italian island of Sardinia to the immediate south. A single chain of mountains makes up two-thirds of the island.

Jutting from the foaming Mediterranean like an impregnable fortress, Corsica resembles a miniature continent, with astounding geographical diversity. Within half an hour's drive, the landscape ranges from glittering bays, vibrant coastal cities and fabulous beaches to sawtooth mountain ridges, verdant valleys, dense forests and time-forgotten hilltop villages. Holidays in Corsica offer tremendously varying opportunities: from hiking and canyoning to snorkelling and sunbathing, enjoying a leisurely boat trip, delving into the island’s multifaceted history and sampling local delicacies. Though Corsica has been part of France for more than 200 years, it feels different from the mainland in everything from customs and cuisine to language and character. Locals love to explain their Corsican identity so plenty of engaging evenings await, especially if the holy trilogy of food, wine and harmonious Corsican music are involved.

Things to do and see

Ajaccio: Commune in France. Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. A port city on the rugged isle's western coast, it was the birthplace of French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte in 1769. His ancestral home, Maison Bonaparte, is now a museum displaying family heirlooms. The baroque, 16th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, where Napoléon was baptized, contains paintings by Delacroix and Tintoretto. Musée Fesch, founded by Napoléon's uncle, houses a large collection of Italian Renaissance art, including works by Botticelli, in a 19th-century palace. Ajaccio's old town, 54

Corsica

Mojácar

centered on Place Foch and its Napoléon monument, is characterized by pastel-colored buildings, palm-lined avenues and chic cafes. Two busy marinas on a broad, picturesque bay are overlooked by an imposing citadel founded in the 15th century. City beaches include Saint-François and Trottel. Just east of town is bustling Plage du Ricanto (also known as "Tahiti Beach"), with many other sandy stretches along the Route des Sanguinaires, to the west. Bastia: Commune in Corsica, France Bastia is a city on the French island of Corsica. Bars and restaurants line the Old Port, with the twin-towered Church of St. Jean-Baptiste rising behind it. Terra Nova, a centuries-old

citadel with ramparts, was built by Genoese rulers. Nearby is the Cathedral of Ste. Marie, filled with paintings and marble statues. The Governor’s Palace houses the Bastia Museum, showcasing the city’s history. At Riva Bella Naturist, the llamas are also on holiday in Corsica! The holiday resort at Riva Bella Naturist in France is home to 70 llamas. On-site since 1989, the llamas have adapted to the seafront climate. Free to wander most of the year, they help maintain the domain in winter. Their work consists in eating bushes and saplings to prevent them from invading the site from the maquis. The rest of the year, they make the most of the sun! Despite their stately demeanour, lamas are gentle and curious creatures. Contrary to legend, they are a peaceful animal and only spit to defend themselves. They aim at their fellow lamas and rarely target people. Originally from South America, they form troops comprising on one side the females and unweaned young and on the other side the males. They are an agile, hoofless animal and do not damage the vegetation. Llamas also love any treats you may have to offer: they will gladly eat dry bread and leftover fruit or vegetable peelings, much to the amusement of watching children. In summer, the lamas are kept in parks that are open for you to walk around. Nothing is lost, everything is transformed. Part of their wool is used to insulate the bungalow lofts and walls. The remaining wool is given to Lana Corsa, an artisanal Corsican wool transformation workshop in Saliceto, at the very heart of the island of Corsica. Weaving and felting workshops are organised to transform the lama wool. The Riva Bella lamas are sheared on-site using solar-powered clippers. The lamas take part in Riva Bella's ecotourism efforts. They help maintain the domain by airing and fertilising the ground while roaming, clearing the site's 70 hectares throughout the year and thus generating huge energy savings.

WORLDS MOST Astonishing facts & figures from around the globe.

...alternative

Christmas Movies These not so typical films are our top list for unusual movies to watch at Christmas time. Forget the classics this year and give yourselves a laugh or a scare.

Trading Places 1983

Gremlins 1984

Mortimer and Randolph Duke enjoy a little wager as Randolph believes they can take a common criminal and make him a successful businessman in the company. Not so much about Christmas, just taking place in the festive period, this film is a must see if you're a fan of 1980s comedy.

A boy inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet (A Christmas present) and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. Surprisingly only a PG considering some adult themes, suggestive moments and scary visuals but still great to watch at Christmas time.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles 1987

Scrooged 1988

A man must struggle to travel home for Thanksgiving with an obnoxious slob of a shower curtain ring salesman as his only companion. John Candy and Steve Martin are superb in this hilarious story of travelling home for Thanksgiving (almost Christmas). Very quotable and laugh out loud funny.

A selfish, cynical television executive is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve. This 80s version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", puts the great Bill Murray in the role of Ebaneeza Scrooge (Frank Cross in this movie). A perfect re-telling of a classic Christmas tome.

62

Die Hard 1988

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation 1989

John McClain, a new York City cop flies to LA to visit his wife at a Christmas party. But when twelve terrorist attack the building at the same night, McCain is the only hope of saving everybody. With nothing but a handgun and his wits he is forced to take on Hans Gruber and his fellow terrorists. Need we say more?

The Griswold family's plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster. One of our favourites on this list and if you've followed the Griswolds through their other movies you'll appreciate the slapstick greatness on display here. Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold again? Perfect Christmas fayre.

Bad Santa 2003

Elf 2003

A miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid. Billy Bob Thornton is rude, drunk and disgusting... everything Santa isn't, which is why this works so well.

After inadvertently wreaking havoc on the elf community due to his ungainly size, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole is sent to the U.S. in search of his true identity. This family friendly offering with the talented Will Ferrell is only on the list because we like it's silliness. Not that alternative and the polar opposite to Bad Santa.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale 2010

Krampus 2015

On Christmas Eve in Finland, Santa Claus is unearthed in an archaeological dig. Soon after, children start disappearing. The story of santa claus re-imagined in a very creepy way. Not too scary or gory and spattered with dark comedy, this horror (suitable for over 13s & with subtitles) is a gem of a Christmas movie

A torn family come together but they're so busy fighting that they've lost the holiday spirit. When a boy writes a letter to Santa and rips it up, he summons something much worse. Despite it's Christmas background this film is anything but cheery. In fact this film is one of the best main stream horror films in quite some time.

Those were our selection of alternative Christmas movies but just for you believers in the classics, here are three more that any fan of a good, seasonal movie, should enjoy and hopefully, have already seen. They are good wholesome, family viewing and can actually be enjoyed at any time of the year. Do you have a favourite Christmas movie that is not mentioned here? Have you tried one of these and thoroughly enjoyed it? Either-way, share with your friends, spread the festive spirit and enjoy your movies this Christmas.

Miracle on 34th Street 1947

It's A Wonderful Life

One of the most adored Christmas tales of all time. If you haven’t watched this one in awhile, you’re in for a treat. The central theme of this movie is whether or not Santa is real.

Billed as the most classic Christmas movie, it's actually sobering for the festive season and is a real tearjerker. This said, it's very beautiful and will restore your hope in the world (eventually).

1946

White Christmas

1954

A 1950s musical comedy starring Bing Crosby? Just what the doctor ordered. It's a little slushy, but its heart is in the right place and the soundtrack, written by Irving Berlin, is everything.
