Since the mid-1940s – five or so years after the end of the Spanish Civil War - over 150 Spaniards have come over to play first-class football and coach/manage in the UK. Some of them made the grade, others failed. THE PIONEER The first Spaniard to play in England was Emilio Aldecoa. Born in Bilbao, he arrived in England as a teenager – one of 4,000 Basque children who fled General Franco’s fascism. He played WW2 football as a winger for Wolves and had a season with Coventry City (1946-47) before returning to Spain. Capped once for his country, he later won two La Liga titles with Barcelona in a career that ended in 1954. Assistant-manager at Birmingham in the early 1960s, he died in 1999, aged 77. A FAMILY AFFAIR Brothers José and Tony Gallego followed Aldecoa to the UK. Outside-left José played for Brentford, Colchester and Southampton in the late 1940s, while goalkeeper Tony starred briefly for Norwich in 1947. THE THREE AMIGOS There was then a large gap before Wigan’s ‘Three Amigos’ arrived on the scene in the mid-1990s – Jesus Sebu, Roberto Martinez and Isidro Diaz. Sebu returned to his former club, Real Zaragoza; Martinez, of course, became manager of Wigan and was later in charge at Everton while Diaz also had spells with Wolves, Rochdale, WBA (trialist) and Motherwell. MANAGERS On the managerial front, Pep Guardiola made 263 appearances for Barcelona and was also head coach at the Nou Camp. He bossed Bayern Munich before taking over as manager of Manchester City last year. One of Guardiola’s assistants is Mikel Arteta (see right). Aitor Karanka, a defender with Athletic Bilbao (three spells) and Real Madrid, is manager of Middlesbrough and Rafael Benitez, a player with Castilla, Parla and Linares in Spain and formerly coach/manager of Vallalolid, Osasuna, Tenerife, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea (briefly), Napoli and Real Madrid, is now charge of Championship side Newcastle United.

40 days and counting It’s that time of year again, when, on a whim, or perhaps as part of an annual commitment, we give up something for Lent. The top thing most people choose to forgo for those 40 long days is alcohol. So no more zingy gin and tonics on a Friday night, say goodbye to that glass of ruby red Cabernet with your steak and wave adios to creamy Baileys over ice after dinner. So what can you drink? There’s only so much water you can consume without keeling over with boredom and sugary cola will do nothing for your waistline. Here are a few alcohol-free alternatives which may even keep you teetotal for months after Lent is over. Apple Mojito – mix fresh apple juice (I like the traditional cloudy type) with soda, pour over crushed ice, add mint leaves, a squeeze of lime and sugar syrup if more sweetness is required. A deliciously refreshing drink for a warm spring evening. A clever twist on the old favourite, Moscow Mule, is the Mango Mule – fiery ginger beer, puréed mango and fresh lime juice, served over ice with a slice of cucumber, in a copper mug of course! Alcohol-free Sangria is easy to make – in a large jug, mix orange juice, grapefruit juice, cranberry or pomegranate juice (for authentic colour), sparkling water and ice, then add slices of any fruit you like, along with a stick of cinnamon. Serve immediately, great for sharing.

I love a Bloody Mary, so my top choice during Lent would be a classic Virgin Mary – fill a tall, wide glass of quality tomato juice, add large cubes of ice, drop in a stick of celery, a sprig of Rosemary, a couple of pitted green olives and add a good dash of Worcester sauce, Tabasco and, not for the faint-hearted a drop of horseradish. This old favourite has as much of a kick as the vodka version and is very easy on the waistline. Mock Mimosa – perfect for any celebration, pour a small amount of orange juice into a champagne glass, add the same amount of white grape juice and top up with Casera or fizzy lemonade, nobody will know it’s not the real thing. A little trickier and needs preparation in advance, but tastes almost like the real thing is the ‘Gin-free’ & Tonic. First make juniper syrup by boiling crushed juniper berries, water, brown sugar and lemon peel, allow this to boil down to a syrup. Once cooled, mix the syrup with your favourite tonic, flavoured or plain, add ice and a slice and there you have it, the perfect substitute for your G&T. There are many more, so called ‘mocktails’ in all kinds of flavours and combinations but these are a few of my favourites and will hopefully help you get through Lent without temptation and have you feeling extra virtuous.

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor, Americas highest military honour and 1 of only 3 ever to do so. BACK STORY Doss, whilst growing up in Lynchburg, Virginia during the Great Depression, nearly kills his brother Hal, hitting him with a brick. This traumatizing experience, along with a talk from his religious mother, firmly reinforces his belief in the Fifth Commandment of the Old Testament, “Thou shalt not kill. With the majority of his town, including his brother, enlisting in the Army to fight in World War II, Doss is motivated to sign up as well. His father, a troubled veteran from the First World War, is deeply upset as he expects to lose his sons just as he lost his boyhood friends.

During the Second World War, the US allowed conscientious objectors to serve in noncombatant military roles; with most working as medics within the army, allowing them to serve without wielding a weapon. Doss was such an individual; a Seventh-day Adventist drafted into the military in April 1942 and given the status of conscientious objector, enrolling as a medic in the 77th Infantry Division. THE FILM Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, based on an earlier documentary about Doss, and stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn. It was released in the United States on November 4, 2016, received positive reviews and has grossed $157 million worldwide. Hacksaw Ridge was chosen by the American Film Institute and National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016 and has received numerous awards and nominations, including Golden Globe nods for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Garfield. The film was nominated for 12 AACTA Awards winning the majority of awards, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Garfield and Best Supporting Actor for Weaving.

However, because of his own beliefs as a conscientious objector, Doss intends to serve as a combat medic.

The film opened in cinemas in the US in November of 2016, and in UK cinemas in January 2017 8

N332

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.

N332 is an informational portal written by ex Guardia Civil to give important information on Spanish Roads and educate ex pats and visitors on safety on driving in Spain. As well as other information regarding living and visiting Spain.

Keep your Number Plate clear Make sure yours in clear, clean and free of additional stickers. The number plate on a vehicle serves as a unique visible indicator that allows for the identification of certain elements such as the vehicle´s owner, to those with access to the necessary database. For everyone else, it still serves to provide information which could be of use, such as the age of the vehicle if you are planning to purchase it, for example. In Spain, number plates used to carry a distinction which identified where the vehicle was registered. This can still be seen on some older vehicles, such as the prefix “M” for Madrid, “A” for Alicante or “MU” for Murcia. These days, new acrylic number plates are replacing the old metal ones. The metal number plates soon faded in the sun, rendering them both useless and illegal, whereas the modern acrylic ones remain clear at all times. If you do have a metal number plate, especially if it is faded, you really must get them replaced immediately. Metal number plates were also prone to damage. Sometimes an object may strike them and cause damage, and it was not unknown for children to occasionally inflict damage to them by bending them. Bending them back in shape often caused them to break. Their acrylic relatives are far more resilient to damage and bending, and last considerably longer. The number plate must be visible at all times, day and night, and must not be obscured by anything, including dirt. At night, it must be illuminated. You are also not allowed to alter

the number plate in any way, such as putting stickers or name tags on it for example. Only number plates which are certified for use in Spain can be used on vehicles registered in Spain. That is why, if you are towing a trailer for example, you must replicate the vehicle´s number plate at the back, in addition to the unique number plate of the trailer, if applicable. If you are carrying items such as bicycles, they sometimes come with an additional holder for the number plate, as the original may not be visible when obscured by the carrying frame. The number plate is an essential element of the vehicle. They do allow for identification in the event of committing an offence, but also allow for identifying and locating a vehicle in the event of theft or damage. Keeping your number plates clean and clear is a must if you want to avoid being stopped and facing a fine, or worse. This only relates to Spanish plated cars, I you have an English plated car, or any other, then you must follow the rules and regulations for that country. If you wish to replace your old/damaged plates here, then you must find a registered garage/mechanico or your local DGT (trafico) office. You will need all of your cars documentation (everything you would have in the car anyway) and they will be able to make you one. Yo could always ask at your next ITV too, they can point you in the right direction.

You can find more info, associated files to download and additional stories by visiting their website wwwN332.es or liking their page on Facebook/N332. 10

Things to do... Places to see.

Toledo.

Spain’s one-time capital is shaking off its austere, pious image. Now, with its innovative restaurants and hotels, plus cultural sights, Toledo merits a weekend trip for sure.

TOLEDO.

Is an ancient city set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. The capital of the region, it’s known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city. It was also the former home of Mannerist painter El Greco. The Moorish Bisagra Gate and the Sol Gate, in Mudéjar style, open into the old quarter, where the Plaza de Zocodover is a lively meeting place.

WORLD HERITAGE.

Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries, behind its walls Toledo preserves an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of Castile - La Mancha a real open-air museum, which has led to it being declared a World Heritage Site. Toledo is also a city linked to deep popular traditions, as the procession of the Most Holy Corpus Christi, a festival declared of International Tourist Interest, demonstrates every year.

HISTORY.

The city of Toledo has its origins in Toletum, the name the Romans gave to this settlement on the banks of the River Tagus after its conquest in 190 BC. The city maintained its importance for centuries &, in the Visigothic era, became the capital of Hispania (6th C.). The arrival of the Arabs in the 8th century, together with the presence of Christians and Jews, made Toledo the “city of the three cultures”. This was one of the Toledo’s most splendid periods when, among other important events, the Toledo School of Translators was founded. Later, when Carlos V came to the throne in 1519, the city became an imperial capital.

14

CULTURAL LEGACIES.

The way that Christians, Arabs and Jews lived side by side for centuries has been reflected in the form of a great artistic and cultural legacy. The maze of streets making up the historic centre of Toledo is only bounded by walls in which many gates were opened. The Bisagra gate, presided over by two bodies and a great imperial shield forms the main access to the city within the walls. This noble gate, of Muslim origin, includes a central courtyard and was altered during the reign of Carlos I (Emperor Carlos V)I. The Alfonso VI gate or Vieja de Bisagra gate, built in 838, is one of the most faithful reflections of Muslim art in the city. The Sol gate was built in the 13th century in Mudejar style and contains the remains of a paleochristian sarcophagus. Via these and other entrances you can reach picturesque places, like the Plaza de Zocodover. In the Arab period, this central space housed an important market, and festivals and all kinds of social events were held here. Nowadays the square, surrounded by buildings with porches, continues to be one of the busiest places in the city.

RELIGION, ARCHITECTURE & ART.

Synagogues, mosques and churches jostle in the narrow streets of Toledo, which is characterised by the mixture of artistic styles. The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, which pre-dates the Christian reconquest, was built in 999 as a copy of the Mosque at Córdoba. To this, a Romanesque-Mudejar sanctuary was added in the 12th century. Good examples from the Mozarabs (Christians who lived under Moslem rule) are the churches of San Sebastián and Santa Eulalia, while the Mudejars left in Toledo a style with rich Arab decoration. Horseshoe arches, lobed windows and other architectural elements can be appreciated in various buildings in Toledo. Santiago del Arrabal is one of the best examples of this style in the city, which has led this church also being known as the Mudejar Cathedral. The

Things to do... Places to see.

origin of its construction is uncertain, although it was probably in the time of King Alfonso VI when the church was built, taking advantage of an old mosque. The same Mudejar style can be seen in the church of Santo Tomé, Remains of the Jewish community are still preserved in the city in the synagogues of Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito. The former, built possibly in the 12th century, is also a good example of Toledo’s Mudejar art. Meanwhile, in the synagogue of El Tránsito, built in 1357, you can admire the best Mudejar coffered ceilings of all those preserved in Toledo, along with walls richly decorated with geometrical & botanical designs and Hebrew inscriptions. Nowadays, this Jewish place of worship houses the Sephardic Museum, in which a collection of pieces of art & various objects used in Jewish ceremonies are exhibited. One of the most outstanding buildings in the city is the Cathedral, considered one of the high points of Gothic art. The construction of this monumental building, with a basilica floor plan and five naves, began in 1226, although it was not finished until the 15th century. This is reflected in the great superimposition of styles in the building and the large number of renowned artists who left their mark on the church. On its main facade the outstanding feature is the doorway, made up of three doors: Infierno (Hell), Perdón (Forgiveness) and Juicio (Judgement). Other main features are the beautiful flamboyant Gothic reredos in the main chapel as well as the many minor chapels, like those of San Ildefonso and El Sagrario, where the Arfe Processional Monstrance is housed. This is a huge piece of precious metalwork decorated with 260 images and made of silver bathed in gold by Enrique de Arfe between 1517 and 1524. The treasure, at 2.5 metres high and weighing more than 160 kilos, takes the leading role in the procession of the Most Holy Corpus Christi, a festival declared of International Tourist Interest. Meanwhile, the Cathedral Museum houses a rich collection of works by painters like Goya, El Greco, Lucas Jordán and Van Dyck.

Also Gothic are the San Martín bridge, which was built in the 13th century with its two characteristic defensive towers, and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. This superb example of flamboyant Gothic was one of the masterpieces of Juan Guas, who carried out the scheme commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs. The building, in flamboyant Gothic style, has a church which is outstanding for its great ornamentation and for its cloister, of great sculptural value. The Renaissance mark on Toledo can be appreciated in the Hospital de Tavera, turned into a museum housing pictures by El Greco, Ribera and Titian, among others. Important architects of the period, like Covarrubias, Berruguete and Bustamante took part in its construction. Inside, the outstanding features are its courtyard, the tomb of Cardinal Tavera, the work of Berruguete, and the pharmacy, which maintains its original appearance. The palaces of Lorenzana, the site of the University, and Fuensalida are in Baroque style. Meanwhile, the Fortress, of medieval origin, presides over the whole city with its imposing image and contains a military museum and one of the largest public libraries in Spain. In its time it was an imperial residence, although the current building was later than the work carried out by Covarrubias and Herrera on the commission of Carlos I. Behind its thick walls it hides a large central courtyard and the imperial staircase. Meanwhile, on it southern façade, the oldest that remains, it has a viewpoint enabling you to see a beautiful view of the River Tagus and the city’s surroundings.

QI Man’s best friend 1. Despite popular belief, dogs can see colour, but not as clearly as we do. 2. Dogs have about 100 facial expressions, most of these expressions are made with the ears. 3. They know what our emotions are. This is because our emotions are reflected in our face and they know if we are happy, angry or sad. 4. The body temperature of a dog is higher than that of a human, between 38°c and 39°c. 5. If not sterilized or neutered, a female and a male, can have up to 66,000 dogs in 6 years. 6. Small dogs generally live longer than large breeds. 7. Studies show that dogs can express jealousy. Like humans because they have the same oxytocin hormone, the hormone involved with expressions of love and jealousy. 8. Dogs actually do sweat when they are hot, through the soles of their feet, where they have their sweat glands. 9. A dog should have all its main teeth by the time it is six months old. 10. Humans detect sounds at frequencies of somewhere between 20 Hz to 20 kHz, while a dog can detect frequencies between 67 Hz to 45 kHz. 11. Dogs generally reach maturity when they are around a year and half (18 months) old. 12. There is no other species of animal in the world that has the same diversity of race (breed) like dogs. 13. Dogs suffer pain when there is a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms have certain sound frequencies that can damage their hearing. If your dog is afraid of a thunderstorm, it may actually be the reaction to pain.

14. Dalmatian puppies are born completely white. 15. Studies show that the ability of a dog can be equal to that of a child of 2 years when it comes to remembering words. The smartest dog breeds can absorb up to 250 words, while the average street dog can understand about 150 words. 16. The Basenji is the only dog in the world that cannot bark. It’s more of a yodel. 17. A dog usually judges objects first by their movement, then by their brightness, and finally by its shape. 18. It is believed that the breeds border collie, poodle and golden retriever are the three most intelligent dogs in the world. 19. Alternatively, the Afghan hound, is believed to be the “dumbest” breed. 20. Like people who have cats, dog owners live longer because they are healthier; do not develop allergies and relieve the stress of everyday life, which is the cause of many diseases. 21. The sense of smell of a dog is more than 100,000 times stronger than that of humans. This is necessary as they do not have a very sharp vision. 22. An estimated 1,000,000 dogs in the United States, have been named as heirs by will by their owners. 23. A one year old dog is as physically mature as a boy of 15 years old. 24. Dogs often dream. Like humans, they have the same kind of sleep wave patterns and rapid eye movement which is when they dream. Spasms in their legs that occur during sleep, are signs that your pet is dreaming.

12 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS

Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

Photo Editing Photo editing and processing is almost as old as photography itself. Since the birth of the photo, photographers have always strived to improve their photos by developing them at home, tinting, toning, and cropping their pictures to make a good photo great. In the days when all photography was shot on film, the option to edit and process photos was pretty much limited to professionals and enthusiasts with a lot of time and patience. These days however, the development of the digital camera has meant that you no longer need your own darkroom to improve your photos. Using a fairly standard PC and a some digital image editing software you’re pretty much ready to roll. There is undoubtedly a lot to learn but if you’re just looking to improve and correct your photos, digital editing is surprisingly quick to learn. It can be a little daunting if you’ve never done it before, but with a bit of practice it’ll soon become second nature.

A wealth of options There are literally hundreds of photo editing packages on the market. Simply choosing a software package to start out with can be a task in itself. Looking at the options available, you’ll also notice a huge variation in prices, ranging from completely free (we like those) to packages costing more than a budget round the world flight.

First up: Free packages Free stuff means more money to spent elsewhere, so for a lot of people this might be the preferred option. Below are the most commonly used free image editing packages: Picasa Picasa is a downloadable image organiser from Google which also features some basic photo editing options. GIMP Budding designers and photographers after a professional image editor might want to try out GIMP. Tip: If you’ve been using a computer for a few years and have already bought a digital camera, scanner or webcam at some stage, you might already own a basic digital imaging package. Double-check the box if you still have it, there might be some software on a disc in there that already does what you want.

the best place to start... Cost effective editing software If you don’t mind putting your hand in your pocket then you’ll open yourself to a lot more options because this is the category that most digital image editing software packages fall into. Adobe Photoshop Elements Perhaps the most popular entry level editing package, which is a consumer version of Adobe Photoshop, costing a fraction of the price. Adobe Lightroom Another great package from the clever bods at Adobe. Lightroom is about twice the price of Photoshop Elements and is a nice bridge between it and the full version of Photoshop and very user friendly. This is my recommendation. Tip: If you are interested in trying out the Adobe packages but aren’t sure which would better suit you, why not try downloading the 30 day trial of both. The trial is completely free and will give you a month to find out which works best for you.

money no object option If you have the funds, you can download the full version of Adobe Photoshop or as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud group of software which will give you everything you will need..and more. Personally, I only use Photoshop alongside (and after) Adobe Lightroom. Once my photo is as I want it with regards to levels, colours, cropping and everything else, I will sometimes take it into Photoshop to paint out objects or layer up with other photos making montages or adding false skies etc. This is all very in-depth so unless you have a long time, and the patience to learn what is often very confusing and daunting to even look at, I’d say tick with Lightroom. Think of your editing software as a way of correcting or perfecting whatever you shot on the camera. The most basic alterations are simple colour adjustments. Most image packages have quick fixes for these, which are meant to make the colour look more authentic. Have a look in the menus to find terms such as “brightness / contrast”, “hue / saturation”, “levels”, “curves” and “shadows / highlights.” They will most likely all appear in the same place in your software package.

This is sadly the last of the photography hints and tips. I hope they have been very informative and that you have taken from this what I hoped and you are capturing images and thinking about photography with a new sense of passion & understanding. Good luck with your progress and I look forward to seeing your results! 23

LIFESTYLE All humans have to eat food for growth and maintenance of a healthy body, but we humans have different requirements as infants, children (kids), teenagers, young adults, adults, and seniors. For example, infants may require feeding every four hours until they gradually age and begin to take in more solid foods. Eventually

they develop into the more normal pattern of eating three times per day as young kids. However, as most parents know, kids, teenagers, and young adults often snack between meals. Snacking is often not limited to these age groups because adults and seniors often do the same. 24

E

Top Tips • Eat three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner); it is important to remember that dinner does not have to be the largest meal.

Tips for special situations:

• The bulk of food consumption should consist of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products.

• People with diabetes can follow the Top Tips and monitor their glucose levels as directed; try to keep the daily blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.

• Choose lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts (with emphasis on beans and nuts). • Choose foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars; look at the labels because the first listed items on the labels comprise the highest concentrations of ingredients. • Control portion sizes; eat the smallest portion that can satisfy hunger and then stop eating. • Snacks are OK in moderation and should consist of items like fruit, whole grains, or nuts to satisfy hunger and not cause excessive weight gain. • Avoid sodas and sugar-enhanced drinks because of the excessive calories in the sodas and sugar drinks; diet drinks may not be a good choice as they make some people hungrier and increase food consumption. • Avoid eating a large meal before sleeping to decrease gastroesophageal reflux and weight gain.

• People with unusual work schedules (night shifts, college students, military) should try to adhere to a breakfast, lunch, and dinner routine with minimal snacking. • People who prepare food should avoid using grease or frying foods in grease. • People trying to lose weight (body fat) should avoid all fatty and sugary foods and eat mainly vegetables, fruits, and nuts and markedly reduce his/her intake of meat and dairy products. • Seek medical advice early if you cannot control your weight, food intake, or if you have diabetes and cannot control your blood glucose levels. This list is to be used as a guide only. Ultimate Magazine has gathered these tips from internet sources and you should always consult your doctor or a health official for your own personal requirements.

• If a person is angry or depressed, eating will not solve these situations and may make the underlying problems worse. • Avoid rewarding children with sugary snacks; such a pattern may become a lifelong habit for people. • Avoid heavy meals in the summer months, especially during hot days. • A vegetarian lifestyle has been promoted for a healthy lifestyle and weight loss; vegetarians should check with their physicians to be sure they are getting enough vitamins, minerals, and iron in their food. • Cooking foods (above 165 F) destroys most harmful bacteria and other pathogens; if you choose to eat uncooked foods like fruits or vegetables, they should be thoroughly washed with running treated (safe to drink) tap water right before eating. • Avoid eating raw or undercooked meats of any type.

“Healthy eating is a way of life, so it’s important to establish routines that are simple, realistically, and ultimately livable.” Arthur Agatston, developer of the South Beach Diet. 25

Extreme Obstacle racing

There is a new craze gaining popularity with thousands of people worldwide. There are varied events in many different countries but basically they are extreme obstacle races covering long distances and rough terrain including climbing, running or even crawling on your belly in muddy river! They are generally considered very tough and gruelling but if you fancy your hand at one of these events, you can submit your entries to many different races all over the world, many in the USA but we have compiled 2 popular series here with the nearest and next races available.

SPARTAN RACING SERIES

TOUGH MUDDER SERIES

A Spartan race is a series of obstacle races of varying distance and difficulty ranging from 3 miles to marathon distances. They are generally held in US and have been franchised to 14 countries including Canada, South Korea, Australia and several European countries.

The 10 to 12 mile Tough Mudder has events on five continents and has raised more than $10 million for charity. Teams must overcome more than 20 military-style obstacles, including swinging off a 12-foot platform, swimming in ice water and conquering a field of live wire.

The series include the Spartan Sprint, the Super Spartan, the Spartan Beast, and the Ultra Beast. Spartan Race also has a military series in which an obstacle course is designed by the United States military. There are also winter and team events.

Unsurprisingly, only 78 percent of entrants actually complete each course. But if they do, they are greeted at the finish line with a beer and live music. There are even on-site tattoo artists to get inked with the official Tough Mudder logo.

The most accessible Spartan races to any of us in here in Spain for 2017 are:

Want to try a Tough Mudder but need a shorter distance to start? They now offer a 5-mile Tough Mudder Half, where you’ll still get plenty of mud, plus fire, ice and electricity.

UK St Clere in Sevenoaks, Kent, 8th of April. SPAIN San Agustin Del Guadalix, Madrid, 22nd of April. FRANCE Lac de Cavayere, Carcassonne, 6th of May. ANDORRA Encamp- Grau Roig, Andorra 16th of September. There are many more in Europe so for more information about the series visit: www.spartan.com You can also find an event that best suites you and your travels.

UK Fawley, Henley on Thames, has the next available challenge on April 29th, 2017. There you can try the Tough Mudder Half too. GERMANY Arnsberg, Hochsauerland 13th & 14th of May for a choice of both Full & Half Tough Mudders. IRELAND Oldcastle, Co. Meath, 8th & 9th July . Full or Half races. www.toughmudder.com

SPANISH LEAGUES & CHAMIONSHIPS. There is also a large following for these events in Spain, and although not deemed as extreme or as commercial as the aforementioned, you can participate on many levels. Visit the facebook page OCRA EspaĂąa or thier website www.ocraespa.jimdo.com for more information and regional events/races.

City of Angels ’s Adele Land

ION T A N I T S E D .. REPORT.

Rodeo Drive

With the success of the movie ‘La La Land’ during the this year’s awards season, Los Angeles has recently been in the spotlight for all the right reasons.

A sprawling metropolis in southern California, LA, has more than 18 million inhabitants and is the second most populous city in the US. The city is divided into some 80 districts, many of which lie on the Pacific coast. One of the most popular districts is, of course, Hollywood, home of the US film industry and the most famous movie making location in the world. Thousands of young hopefuls and wannabe actors have made their way to Hollywood over the years, some made the big time, others slipped quietly away having tried and failed. Despite its reputation for glitz and glamour, Hollywood is a relatively low-income area and some visitors may be surprised to find a high number of panhandlers and homeless people in a strange juxtaposition of the extremely wealthy and very poor living side by side. Visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the ‘walk of fame’ where famous movie and music stars have been honoured with their own ‘star’ in the pavement on the boulevard. Another one for fans of the movies, music and reality TV shows is a tour of the Hollywood hills where you can gaze in awe at the opulent mansions and estates owned (and rarely lived in) by A-listers, you can make you own minds up on which celeb’ has the most, or least taste! 44

For more star spotting and some window shopping, visit Beverly Hills and the famous Rodeo drive, where you will practically be tripping over Lamborghinis, Morgans, Porches as well as their famous owners. The area is awash with landmark hotels, all frequented by stars of the present and years gone by, check into the Beverly Hilton, the Chateau Marmont, or the Beverly Hills hotel and walk in the footsteps of stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, John Belushi and Lauren Bacall. If you are feeling peckish, visit the cupcake ATM, at Sprinkles bakery where you can get a tasty sweet treat without stepping foot in the door! For something more substantial, choose one of the many restaurants along Sunset Boulevard, enjoy a delicious meal and glass of wine and watch the crazy LA world go by. Along the coast of greater Los Angeles are some fabulous beach areas with powdery sand slipping into the vast Pacific Ocean. Santa Monica is one of the most famous, with it’s pier and promenade offering fun and entertainment all year round. Third street promenade mall is the shopping hub of downtown Santa Monica, three blocks of open-air, car-free zones with designer boutiques and excellent, if pricey, eateries.

For an amusing diversion, stroll along the pier, grab a hotdog, ride the roller coaster or Ferris wheel (maybe before the hotdog) and stroll to the end and watch the pelicans diving for their lunch. One of the most famous hotels in Santa Monica, has to be the beautiful, Shutters on the Beach, situated at the end of Pico boulevard, right on the beach, this ‘beach house’ style hotel will set you back at least 800 dollars a night in low season. Walk, cycle or inline skate south of Santa Monica and you will find yourself in the heart of the infamous Venice Beach. Love it or hate it, this area has a real hippy vibe and is a must visit when in the LA area. Treat yourself to an ice cream (or protein shake) and wonder at the sight of huge muscle-bound men (and women) working out in the famous open air gym, or remember scenes from the Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes movie, ‘White men can’t jump’, and watch the spontaneous basketball games on the court by the promenade. In the other direction, heading north along the Pacific Coast Highway, is another enclave of celebrity residences. Malibu, a surfer’s paradise, is a stretch of coastline between Santa Monica and Palos Verdes and is home to ‘Malibu Colony’, a gated community of beachfront homes, mostly built high on stilt foundations and boasting breath-taking ocean views. Celebrity residents include, Mel Gibson, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey and many more. Travelling around LA by car is fairly easy but the roads can be busy especially at rush hour. The beachfront walkway Malibu Colony

runs 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance in the south. You can jog, cycle as far as you like and take in the beautiful coastline. A great way to see most major cities is by open top bus and LA is no different, there are many companies offering themed trips including the Hollywood stars homes tour. In most cases you can hop on and hop off where you like and spend a great day seeing the whole area. Just off the coast is Catalina Island an inhabited island with wonderful flora and fauna, along with a dive park. You can take a ferry from the ports of Long Beach or San Pedro or enjoy a trip on a glass bottomed boat. You can never be bored in LA, the city offers up something surprising when you least expect it. As comic and LA resident Billy Connolly once said: “I love Los Angeles, it reinvents itself every two days”. Getting to LA is pretty easy, Iberia and American airlines offer the occasional direct flight from Madrid to LAX, depending on the time of year, or daily flights with brief transit stops. So stop California Dreaming, dig out your spirit of adventure and head to the real La La Land, you never know, you might just become famous!

While you may be better at some points in your life than others, it really is a sport that you can enjoy throughout your life. Contact your local golf course for info on tuition & prices etc.

It’s An Age-Old Tradition Golf is an old sport… Like, really old. No one really knows when the first form of the game began, but golf as we know it today originated in Scotland in the 15th century. Basically, golf isn’t going anywhere, so you may as well give it a try! The Scenery Golf courses are spectacular places to spend morning or afternoon! If you appreciate beautiful parks, you will appreciate a beautiful golf course. Some courses are even positioned to maximize beautiful views that are both relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time. For many amateur golfers, the fresh air, light exercise, and fun are the real draw behind the game. EASTER Easter is a very important celebration in Spain. The whole of Holy Week is often a holiday. A lot of Spanish Catholics fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On Ash Wednesday, people have a cross made of ash put on their foreheads. This is a way of saying sorry to God. On Palm Sunday, most people go to mass in the morning. Children bring palm leaves and branches to be blessed by the priest. Sometimes the branches decorated with sweets, tinsel or have other decorations hanging from them. On Maundy Thursday, there is a special ‘Dance of Death’ celebration in Verges, Gerona. A scary dance is performed, at night, by men dressed as skeletons. Many towns and cities in Spain celebrate Easter with processions through the streets at night. Floats called ‘tronos’ are carried through the street. Each float has incredible decorated figures representing part of the Easter story on it.

The floats and statues are often covered in gold, silver and fine cloths. They are also decorated with lots of fresh flowers. Forty or fifty people carry each trono on their shoulders on the procession, which can sometimes last between four or five hours! In Murcia, a tronos, telling the story of the Last Supper has real food on the table. On Easter Sunday the twenty-six men who have carried the table in the procession around the town sit down and eat the food! In southern Spain, the processions are often accompanied by drums being beaten by the local boys. In the village of Hellin, between eight and ten thousand drums are beaten at the processions between Holy Wednesday and Easter Sunday.

The most famous and biggest processions are held in Seville. Each one is organised by ‘Co-fradias’, or ‘The Brotherhoods’. The Co-fradias try to put on the biggest and best procession and there is a lot of competition among them as to who has done so.

SPORT IN SPAIN Throughout the second half of the 20th century and certainly during the early years of the 21st, sport in Spain was dominated, without a shadow of doubt, by football with Real Madrid (32 wins) and Barcelona (24) claiming a total of 56 La Liga championship triumphs between them.

World Club Championship You can readily add victories in the World Club Championship for Real Madrid in 1960, 1998, 2002 and 2016 and for Atletico Madrid 1974.

Copa del Rey The ‘big two’ also won the Copa del Rey 47 times (Barcá 28 and Real 19) with Athletic Bilbao claiming 23 wins and Atletico Madrid 10. And, of course, Barcá and both Madrid clubs, along with Espanyol, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla and Valencia, all won major European competitions.

European Super Cup The European Super Cup was won by Valencia in 1980 and 2004; by Barcelona 1992, 1997, 2009, 2011 and 2015; by Real Madrid 2002, 2014 and 2016; by Sevilla 2006 and by Atletico Madrid in 2010 and 2012. The 2015 encounter saw Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-4 after extra-time in a thriller in Tbilisi.

Inter Cities Fairs Cup For the record, Barcelona in 1958 (v London), 1960 (v Birmingham City over two legs) and 1966 (v Real Zaragoza); Valencia 1962 (v Barcelona) and 1963 (v Dinamo Zagreb) and Real Zaragoza 1964 (v Valencia) all won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup final.

On Spanish soil There have also been European Cup/Champions League final wins on Spanish soil for teams from other countries – by Nottingham Forest in 1980 (v HSV Hamburg at the Bernabeau in Madrid); for Steaua Bucharest in 1986 (v Barcelona in Sevilla); for AC Milan in 1989 (in Barcelona); for Manchester United in 1999 (also in Barcelona) and for Inter Milan in 2010 (v Bayern Munich in Madrid).

European Cup-winner’s Cup Atletico Madrid in 1962 (v Fiorentina); Barcelona 1979 (v Dusseldorf), 1982 (v Standard Liege), 1989 (v Sampdoria) and 1997 (v Paris Saint Germain); Valencia, 1980 (on penalties v Arsenal) and Real Zaragoza 1995 (also v Arsenal) were all victorious in European Cup-winner’s Cup finals. UEFA Cup In the UEFA Cup, there have been final triumphs for Real Madrid in 1986 (v Cologne); Valencia, 2004 (v Olympique Marseille) and for Sevilla, who won the trophy twice, in 2006 (v Middlesbrough) and 2007 (v Spanish rivals Espanyol). Europa League There have been Europa League triumphs for Atletico Madrid in 2010 (v Fulham) and 2012 (v their La Liga counterparts Athletic Bilbao) while Sevilla claimed a hat-trick of final successes – in 2014 (v Benfica), 2015 (v Dnipropetrovsk) and 2016 (v Liverpool). European Cup/Champions League Spanish clubs have won the in the prestigious European Cup/Champions League no less than sixteen times and counting. Real Madrid lifted the trophy on eleven occasions, in 1956 (v Reims), 1957 (v Fiorentina), 1958 (v AC Milan), 1959 (v Reims again), 1960 v Eintracht Frankfurt (Di Stefano’s match in Scotland), 1966 (v Partizan Belgrade), 1998 (v Juventus), 2000 (v fellow Spanish side Valencia), 2002 (v Bayer Leverkusen) and twice more against their bitter city rivals from Spain, namely Atletico Madrid in 2014 and 2015. Barcelona’s five wins so far have come in 1992 (v Sampdoria), 2006 (v Arsenal), 2009 (v Manchester United), 2011 (v Manchester United again) and 2015 (v Juventus).

54

And the World Cup final was also staged at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium in 1982 when 90,000 fans saw Italy defeat West Germany 3-1. The Spanish national team Spain’s national football team has always included stars from both Madrid clubs and, of course, more-so in recent times, from Barcelona. And the country’s football team did the business - winning the European Championships in 1964 (on home soil in Madrid when they defeated the USSR), in 2008 and 2012 and carrying off the coveted FIFA World Cup in 2010 when they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final Johannesburg, South Africa). Indeed, it is universally agreed that the Spanish football squad between 2004 and 2012 was one of the best ever assembled by a European Country. Indeed, they were virtually unbeatable during that time. Goalscorers Now we come to one of the greatest goalscorers of all-time, Alfredo Di Stefano, who, although born in Argentina in 1926, became a Spanish citizen at the age of 30 and went on to win honours galore, first as a player and then as a manager. A centre-forward, known as the ‘White Ghost’ he scored goals galore, amassing a staggering total of 507 in 696 appearances between 1945 and 1966 while playing for River Plate, Huracan and Millonaros in Argentina and for Real Madrid and Espanyol in Spain, and also at international level.

BY TONY MATTHEWS Alfredo Di Stefanos’ amazing goal-tally included a memorable hat-trick for Real Madrid in their epic 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 European Cup final when 127,621 spectators packed into Hampden Park, Glasgow – record crowd never to be beaten for this competition. In later years Di Stefano was followed by some more exceptionally talented marksman, among them Spanish international superstar Raúl who, between 1994 and 2015, netted 388 goals in 932 club games, including 323 in 741 outings for Real Madrid. He also bagged 44 goals in 102 full internationals for his country.

Other Sports

Other sports in which Spain (or indeed Spaniards) has/ have succeeded include athletics, basketball, cycling, Formula 1, golf, MotoGP and tennis. Athletics Spanish road runner Abel Antón won the 1998 London marathon and Carmen Valero represented Spain at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal where she was eliminated in the heats of the 800m and 1500m races. She was, in fact, Spain’s only female athlete in the track and field squad. Valero also won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1976 and 1977, having finished third in 1975. Basketball Spain’s excellent basketball team won the 2006 World Championship and were twice victorious in the Euro-Basket competition, lifting the trophy in 2009 and 2011. Cycling Spain have had at least six superb pedal-pushers – namely Frederico Bahamontes (1959), Luis Ocana (1973), Miguel Indurain (1991-95 inclusive), Óscar Pereiro (2006), Alberto Contador (2007 and 2009) and Carlos Sastré (2008) – and they all won the gruelling Tour de France in the years stated. Formula One Fernando Alonso gained back-to-back driver’s title wins in 2005 and 2006. The current top Spaniard is Carlos Sainz junior, who was preceeded by Jaime Alguersuari, Adrian Campos, Antonio Creus, Paco Godia, Pedro Del la Rosa, Marc Géne, Juan Jover, Roberto Merhi, Luis Perez-Sala, Alex Soler-Roig, Emilio de Villota and Emilio Zapico. Unfortunately, none of these really set the wheels burning!

Golf Among some quite brilliant Spanish golfers, with the late, great Seve Ballesteros is top of the pile in my book. Also on the list of star performers with the small pimpled ball who achieved success in their own right down the years, we have Nacho Elvira, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Angel Cabrera, José Maria Cañizares, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castrano, Sergio Garcia, Antonio Garrido, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Pablo Larrazabal, Santiago Luna, Pablo Martin, Azahara Münoz, José Maria Olazabal, Jon Rahm, Beatriz Recari, José Rivero and Alvaro Quirós. And there will be plenty more following on as the years tick by. Moto GP Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez, both with three World title wins to their credit, are currently two of the best motor-cyclists in the sport. However, prior to these superstars taking to the track, Spain boasted several other excellent riders, including Elimio Alzamora, Alvaro Baustita, Alex Criville, Toni Elias, Manuel Herreros, José Martinez, Angel Nieto (seven 125cc championship wins under his belt), Dani Pedrosa, Sito Pons, Esteve Rabat, Julian Simon, Nicolas Terol and Ricardo Tormo. These 15 cyclists, have, over the years, won more than 100 titles between them at 500cc, 250cc and 125cc levels. Tennis Rafael Nadal (from Majorca) won the Wimbledon singles title twice, in 2008 and 2010, and he also took the top prize in the Australian, French and the US Opens as well as helping Spain win the Davis Cup five times, in 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Manuél Santana won Grand Slam tennis titles in France in 1961 and 1964, in the USA in 1965 and Wimbledon 1966; Manuel Orantes was a singles winner in America in 1975 and Andrés Gimeno won at Roland Garros in 1972. The top female in Spanish tennis in recent years has been Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario who won the French Open in 1989. Olympics And finally for the record, Spain hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics which were held in Barcelona. And what a great occasion it was… with brilliant action on the track, in the pool, inside arenas and on the road from the 9,356 athletes (6,652 men and 2,704 women) who competed in 257 events covering 25 different sports.

That New York street called Broadway represents the highest level of commercial theater in the world. It boasts of 40 professional theaters with 500 or more seats located in the city’s Theater District. It is a popular attraction for tourists in the city, with theater attendance reaching 12.13 billion and ticket sales amounting to almost $1.1 billion. But which plays have light up the stage the most? Which have enthralled theater aficionados the longest? Here is a list of the top 10 most popular Broadway shows ever, based on the number of performances staged. The Theater District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City. According to The Broadway League, for the 2015–2016 season (which ended May 22, 2016), total attendance was 13,317,980 and Broadway shows had US$1,373,253,725 in grosses, with attendance up 1.6%, grosses up 0.6%, and playing weeks up 1.4%. The great majority of Broadway shows are musicals. Historian Martin Shefter argues, “’Broadway musicals,’ culminating in the productions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, became enormously influential forms of American popular culture” and helped make New York City the cultural capital of the nation.

1. The Phantom of the Opera – 10,367 performances

It debuted in 1988 and it is still running up to now. It is the longest running show in Broadway, musical or otherwise. It won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1988. It is considered the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time and the most financially successful theatrical show ever. This Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has already grossed $845 million in Broadway alone.

2. Cats – 7,485 performances

It ran for 18 years, from 1982 to 2000. It won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1983. During its run, Marlene Danielle was part of the show all 18 years. It introduced “Memory” in the list of standard songs. The actresses Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley will forever be associated with this musical play.

3. Chicago – 6,692 performances

“Chicago” made its debut in 1996. It won six Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Revival of a Musical. The original production actually opened way back in 1975 and ran for 936 performances. It is based on a 1926 play that had the same title written by the reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins. It was about the actual crimes and criminals she had reported on. It discussed the concept of the celebrity criminal and the corruption involved in the administration of the criminal justice system.

4. Les Miserables – 6,680 performances

“Les Miserables” ran for 16 years, from 1987 to 2003. It won eight Tony Awards in 1987, including the prize for Best Musical. It was revived in Broadway in 2006 in a run that featured 463 performances. The play actually originated in France before it was adapted into the English language in London’s West End. It originally got negative reviews but positive word-ofmouth allowed it to become a hit in 1985. It crossed the pond two years later where the Broadway audience took a liking to the story of Jean Valjean. 58

5. The Lion King – 6,281 performances

It opened in 1997 and it is still running up to now. It won six Tony Awards in 1998, including the award for Best Musical. It is based on the 1994 animated movie from Disney with the same title. “The Lion King” is considered to be the highest grossing show in Broadway of all time, with ticket gross amounting to $853.8 million as of the middle of 2012.

6. A Chorus Line – 6,137 performances

“A Chorus Line” ran for 15 years, from 1975 to 1990. It won nine Tony Awards in 1976, including the award for Best Musical. It was revived in Broadway in 2006 in an engagement that ran for 759 performances. The play was about an audition for spots in a musical play. It featured 17 main characters, each of which provide the audience with a peek into the personalities of the choreographer and the performers. They all describe what events molded them to become dancers and how it shaped their respective lives.

7. Oh! Calcutta! – 5,959 performances

The original production of “Oh! Calcutta!” began in 1969 and ran for 1,314 performances. It was revived in 1976 and ran for 13 years until 1989. It is considered to be Broadway’s longest-running revue, meaning a play that combines music, dancing and sketches. It attracted controversy because of its topics related to sex and the extended frontal nudity of its male and female characters. And no, the play was not about that bustling city in India.

8. Beauty and the Beast – 5,461 performances

“Beauty and the Beast” ran for 13 years, from 1994 to 2007. It won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design in 1994. The play is based on the 1991 Disney animated movie of the same title, though there were seven new songs written for the stage musical. Alan Menken composed the music, while Tim Rice and Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics. It shut down in 2007 when Disney was about to open “The Little Mermaid.” Pundits feared that having two musical plays that both feature Disney princesses would divide the crowd and cause undue competition between the two shows.

9. Rent – 5,123 performances

“Rent” ran for 12 years, from 1996 to 2008. It won four Tony Awards in 1996, including the award for Best Musical. The rock musical was based on the opera by Giacomo Puccini entitled “La Boheme.” It was about a group of struggling young artists and musicians living in the Lower East Side of New York City while under the shadow of the AIDS/HIV disease.

10. Mamma Mia! – 4,643 performances

The show made its debut in 2003 and it is still running up to now. The musical is based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA. “Mamma Mia” was one of the group’s chart hits back in the 1970s. Other ABBA songs included in the play are “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Thank You for the Music” and “The Winner Takes It All.”

“Our mission is to change the world’s attitude to plastic in one generation.”

A large amount of this “thrown away” plastic carries toxic chemicals such as BPA, phthalates, pesticides and PCBs.

Plastic pollution is a global issue that impacts our ocean, our health and our well-being. Through education, science and their film, Plastic Oceans are working to stem the tide of plastic entering the ocean, before it is too late.

“There is no away – because plastic is so permanent and so indestructible. When you cast it into the ocean, there is no away” Sir David Attenborough.

They are helping consumers to become plastic literate, so they can make informed decisions about how and when they accept plastic, and in doing so, are shaping future demand for environmentally sensitive products and solutions.

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Robert Swan OBE

We use over 300 million tonnes of new plastic every year. Half of this we use just once and usually for less than 12 minutes. 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the ocean every year. Over many years, as this plastic waste is carried along by ocean currents, it breaks up into tiny pieces. So much is getting into our ocean that in some places these plastic particles outnumber plankton by a ratio of 26:1 If you would like to help, there are many ways you can support Plastic Oceans global network of charities. Visit the website www.plasticoceans.org and there you will find how you can get involved, donate or even support them by purchasing merchandise or pledging to stop using plastics. They have also produced a documentary film highlighting the impact of waste plastic in the environment. The film, 60

Over 600 species of marine life are known to suffer directly from plastic pollution including some on the IUCN red list such as the Hawaiian monk seal, loggerhead turtle and sooty shearwater. Birds consume plastic, and an increasing number starve when their stomachs are full of plastic waste. Over 90% of sea-birds worldwide have plastic pieces in their stomachs. Once in the ocean, plastic litter affects the safety of sea transport, fisheries, tourism and recreation. When broken down into tiny pieces, plastic attracts toxic chemicals released over decades from industry and agriculture, the concentration of which increases as they move up the food chain. Exposures to these chemicals have been suggested to contribute to some cancers, and infertility, as well as immune, metabolic, cognitive and behavioural disorders. The entry of plastic pieces into our food chain is of concern to human health. titled A Plastic Ocean, will be on general release in January 2017 but the Documentary’s trailer is already out there and can be seen by visiting their website or searching for the title on youtube, let’s hope it goes viral.

How can you assess your best route to transfer money to or from Spain? When it comes to transferring money overseas, making the right decision starts by asking the right questions before considering the options available on the market. It’s a simple process that could help you save considerable amount of money on all your transfers.

Be prepared

Consider your options

Speak to the experts

Preparation is essential; by assessing your personal requirements, you will be in the best position to later discuss them with a currency specialist like Currencies Direct. Ask yourself the following questions:

Next step is the choice of the service provider. The solution may appear simple - you’ll just use your bank, right? For a property purchase, a foreign pension, to pay bills or make mortgage payments?

• How often will you need to

transfer funds? Will it be a one-off transfer or regular payments?

• When you will need the funds? Is the money needed at a specific date? How much time and flexibility do you have?

• Are there any other specific

criteria relating to your own personal circumstances?

You will then have to decide the type of transfer that you will go for. This is where the initial assessment and the guidance provided by the currency experts will help you to find the service most adapted to your needs, as well as the right time to transfer.

Our multilingual and friendly specialists are here to help you assess your needs and choose the right options. We work with local lawyers and solicitors who will check all the paperwork to the last detail and follow every step of the selling/buying process. We also offer an extensive range of property services for both sellers & buyers to make selling or buying your home as seamless as possible. If you are considering buying or selling a second home on the Costa Almeria then I encourage you to feel free to contact us. We will help you in fluent English, Dutch, Spanish, French or German. We aim to establish individual relationships with our clients through a business built on professionalism and knowledge.
