Sip a super cider..!
by Adele Land
Passed over for more sophisticated cocktails and artisan beers for many years, cider has seen a sudden resurgence in popularity.
adult intake of added sugar, more than five times that of beer, putting paid to the old adage: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
Dating back to 55BC the Romans when invaders found poor villagers in England drinking a liquid made from fermented apples. While the rich folk of the 17th and 18th centuries drank wine, the poor drank cider, mainly because it was actually safer to drink than the local water in those days, they even baptized their babies in it due to the unsanitary condition of the water.
In recent years, new flavours of cider have appeared on the supermarket shelves and in bars, pear cider is a popular new entry and flavours such as toffee apple, blackcurrant, pomegranate and other unusual combinations can easily be found.
England remains the biggest cider producer in the world, although northern Spain comes a close second, especially in areas on the Atlantic coast where the cooler climate lends itself to good apple harvests. If you travel to the US and fancy a glass of cider, you should order ‘hard cider’ as their ‘apple cider’ version strangely doesn’t contain alcohol. By law, cider must contain at least 35 percent apples, although purists will argue that the only ‘real’ cider is made from 95 percent apples. Although often lower in alcohol than beers or spirits, cider is incredibly high in sugar and in cases one large glass was found to contain the total of a whole day’s recommended

Although these new drinks are not strictly cider, they make a refreshing change, served chilled on a warm summer day. While purists drink cider straight up, it is incredibly thirst quenching served over ice when drank in warmer climes. To mix it up a bit, there are a number of cocktails you can make with cider: Add a splash of cranberry for a refreshing aperitif, mix with dry white wine for an interesting twist on sangria or for fans of a Moscow mule, add ginger beer and a slice of apple for a new take on an old favourite. Whichever way you drink it, cider looks set to be a summer staple in bars and beers gardens everywhere.

THE
Founder The Founder is the story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers’ innovative fast food eatery, McDonald’s, into one of the biggest restaurant businesses in the world with a combination of ambition, persistence, and ruthlessness.
Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc with Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch co-starring as McDonald’s founders Richard and Maurice McDonald. Back Story. 1954. Having worked as a salesman most of his adult life, Ray Kroc has been a hustler in most senses of the word. That hustling has made him the target of derision among certain circles for peddling what have ended up being more novelty or faddish than useful products, but it has also placed more than a comfortable roof in Arlington Heights, Illinois over his and his wife Ethel’s heads. Ethel, however, wishes that he placed as much effort into being at home with her than he is in selling, his current job of peddling fivespindle milkshake makers for Prince Castle which has him constantly on the road going from one drive-in restaurant to another. It is because of the beefs he has with the whole drivein experience (bad food, bad service) in constantly eating at such establishments while on the road that he becomes enthralled with the concept of McDonald’s Restaurant in San Bernardino, California, it was owned and operated by brothers Richard McDonald and Maurice McDonald - Dick and Mac. Unlike most
ald brothers.
The real McDon
of Ray’s customers who will only require one five-spindle milkshake maker at any given time, the McDonald brothers end up purchasing eight machines for their single restaurant.
Later life. Kroc maintained the assembly line “Speedee Service System” for hamburger preparation, which was introduced by the McDonald brothers in 1948. He standardized operations, ensuring every burger would taste the same in every restaurant. He set strict rules for franchisees on how the food was to be made, portion sizes, cooking methods and times, and packaging. Kroc also rejected cost-cutting measures like using soybean filler in the hamburger patties. These strict rules also were applied to customer service standards with such mandates that money be refunded to clients whose orders were not correct or to customers who had to wait more than five minutes for their food. However, Kroc let the franchisees decide their best approach to marketing the products. For example, Willard Scott created the figure now known internationally as Ronald McDonald to improve sales in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. By the time of Kroc’s death in 1984, the chain had 7,500 outlets in the United States and 31 other countries and territories. The total systemwide sales of its restaurants was more than $8 billion in 1983. The story of how Ray became successful and the McDonald brothers, not so, is the main essence of the film so we’ll leave that up to you to find out by watching the movie.

POINTS DON’T MAKE PRIZES
As a permanent resident in Spain, you should have your Spanish driving licence and understand the Spanish points system. The DGT has issued a list of some the top reasons why drivers in Spain lose points from their licence, categorised by their severity. This system ONLY applies if you drive in Spain using a Spanish driving licence. How many points does each driver have? If you have had a driving licence for three years plus, you are credited with 12points. If less than three years, or if you have got your licence back after being banned for having lost all your points, you start with eight points. Loss of 6 points: • With a rate of alcohol greater than 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. If professional and novice drivers (qualified less than two years), the limit is reduced to 0.30 mg / l. • Driving under the influence of drugs, psychotropics, stimulants and other substances with similar effects. • Refusing to submit to a breathalyser test or drug screening. • Driving in a reckless manner (endangering other drivers), driving in the opposite direction or engaging in unauthorised races. • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50% the maximum authorised limit and by at least 30 kilometres per hour. • Using mechanisms or instruments that inhibit traffic monitoring or radar detection systems. • Exceeding driving time by more than 50% or reducing rest times by more than 50% of those laid down in legislation on land transport.
• Driving with a suspended licence or having been banned for driving that vehicle. • Driving negligently and putting other road users at risk. • Failure to comply with the legal provisions on the priorities and the obligation to stop at the stop sign and traffic lights. • Failure to comply with the legal provisions on overtaking, endangering or hindering those moving in the opposite direction and overtaking in places or circumstances of reduced visibility. • Overtaking, endangering or hindering cyclists. • Perform a reversing manoeuvre on motorways. • Increasing speed or performing manoeuvres that prevent or hinder overtaking by the driver of another vehicle. • Failure to observe the signals of agents that regulate movement. • Failure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Loss of 3 points: • Making the change of direction in breach of the provisions in road safety laws. • Driving using a mobile phone, programming the browser, using headphones or other devices that reduce the attention. • Not using seat belts, child restraints, helmets and other protective equipment.
Loss of 4 points: • Driving with a blood alcohol level between 0.25 and 0.50 mg per litre of exhaled air. For professional and novice drivers, the limit is between 0.15 and 0.30 mg / l. • Throwing objects on or nearby the road that could cause fires, accidents or impede other road users. • Driving on motorways or dual carriageways with vehicles which are strictly prohibited. • Driving a vehicle with an occupation that increases by 50% or more the number of authorised seats. • Driving a vehicle without a licence for that vehicle.

Things to do... Places to see.
Sorbas.
Just on our doorstep and with possibly more to offer us than previously thought, this little village hides a geological wonder.
When visiting Sorbas, especially if travelling in from the East by road, you’ll instantly notice one of the best views, with its houses clinging to the edge of a cliff, named Afa, which looms over a deep ravine looking down on the Rio de Aguas. Alternatively, among the web of narrow and steep streets of Arabic descent there are various viewpoints - Porche, Castillo, Calvario and Torreta, from where one can look at and contemplate the hanging houses and the beautiful dessert environment that surrounds the town.
Attractions.
In the main square is where you will find the most important monuments, one of which is The Santa María Church. Built in 16th Century on top of an old mosque and with many Mudéjar, baroque and neoclassic elements to it. The gable end was built between 1765 and 1768 and the main door is 19th century. San Roque and San Jose, patron saints of Sorbas, guard the corners of the bell-tower, with the help of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The Town Hall can be found next to the church, said to have belonged to the houses of the Duke of Alba, the Duke of Valois and the Duke of Marqués del Carpio and the Villaespesa theatre. Sorbas is known for its traditional pottery, an old Moorish oven is used for firing pottery. Ceramics are sold from the workshops in the Barrio de las Alfarerias, also called Las Cantarerías. In this area are streets lined with studios where they still make ceramic pieces and objects just like in the past, among them the typical earthenware pitcher made in the shape of a rooster. Pieces made from straw and tin can also be found. Many of thesse items can also be found at the the 14
market, which is held every Thursday in the central square. In the areas surrounding the populated town centre lie the interesting enclaves of La Mela and Cariatiz, where caves with rock paintings can be found. There is also a signposted route called Los Molinos del Río Agua, ideal for hiking fanatics. Just outside of the town, farmhouses have been restored to provide accommodation for visitors to the Karst and Yesos Natural Park, where a big attraction is the caves, carved by water erosion, with chasms, stalactites and stalagmites, they stretch for several kilometres. It is one of the largest cave networks in Europe, over 1,500 have been mapped in a 12km area.
The Caves of Sorbas (‘Cuevas de Sorbas’).
There are quite a few geosites in Spain. However, the Gypsum Karst Caves of Sorbas are one of the most spectacular Karst topography, apart from the worlds most impressive geode found in Pulpí but thats for another edition! This area is famous for it’s cave tunnels of more than 50 km. It’s a marvellous underground world and is really worth a visit, provided you do not suffer from claustrophobia, since it is almost a journey to the centre of the Earth.
Karst Topography.
But what exactly is this Karst topography, namely Gypsum Karst of Sorbas? It is a set of caves that were formed by the combined action of water. On the one hand, due to erosion of river waters and on the other hand by the dissolution that occurs on some rocks, in this case: Karst. Gypsum is a
Things to do... Places to see.
mineral with a fairly rapid dissolution in water. Because of this speedy dissolution, its degradation is also quite fast and this is the reason why there are very few Gypsum Karsts in the world. Most of these geosites are highly degraded. However, in Almeria, because there is very little rain, this process is not that fast and therefore it is one of the best preserved Gypsum Karst topography in the world.
Guided Tours.
Guided tours are available to the general public which have to be pre booked and are available in English. All equipment is supplied and included within the price however you are advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear. This should essentially be comfortable and non restrictive, for example a tracksuit or jeans and t-shirt. You will also need adequate footwear (don’t turn up in your flip flops!) Besides climbing or walking boots, trainers are ideal. Basic Route: This one is a simple one and doable by almost everyone. The length of the trail is between an hour and a half and two hours. You will be guided through spacious galleries where you can admire gypsum crystals reflecting in the light of the hulls. There are small pools that are full of water throughout the year.
Combined Route: This route is a complicated journey through two very different caves of the Gypsum Karst topography of Sorbas. It is indicated for people with enough agility and the tour lasts approximately four hours. Technical Route: A tour for adventurous people who are not obese, and of course do not suffer from claustrophobia. The tour may last between four and five hours. This is a difficult route through a large cave in the Gypsum Karst of Sorbas, the ‘Treasure Cave’. You will have to slip down a rappel of about 8 meters. Visitor Centre: Situated in Calle Terraplen, Sorbas village. The Centro de Interpretacion Los Yesares, shows phases of the formation of Karst are is explained with the aid of exhibits. The centre also provides maps and books, and details of the Sorbas walking trails. Opening Times 11.00 - 14.00 & 17.00 20.00 daily from April to September. Caves address: Paraje Barranco del Infierno, 04270, Sorbas. Tel: 950 364 704. The site is signposted along the A-1102 approximately 2 kilometres from the town. Call to book you tours (in English) or visit www.cuevasdesorbas.com for more information.
Training Route: It is an easy one, suitable for school classes. The length is about four hours. It begins with a tour on the surface where there are sinkholes of dissolution, collapse, potholes and mounds formed in the plaster along the years. After a short break for lunch, the route continues through the ‘Yesos’ cave. 15

PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE Henri Cartier-Bresson.
by Dean Baker
Born in France in 1908, Henri Cartier-Bresson became a French humanist photographer considered a master of candid photography, and an early user of 35 mm film. He pioneered the genre of street photography, and conceived of photography as capturing a decisive moment.
fig 1
Before he wielded the camera as an art form, he was a prolific artist and he regarded Cubist painter and sculptor André Lhote, as his teacher of “photography without a camera.” However, a photo by Hungarian photojournalist, Martin Munkacsi titled “Three Boys at Lake Tanganyika” (fig1), inspired him to stop painting and to take up photography seriously, changing his previous artistic philosophies. “Photography is not like painting...There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative...Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever.” He acquired his trademark Leica 35 mm rangefinder camera fitted with a normal 50 mm lens, in Marseilles, which would accompany him for many years. The anonymity that the small camera gave him in a crowd or during an intimate moment was essential in overcoming the formal and unnatural behaviour of those who were aware of being photographed. He enhanced his anonymity by painting all shiny parts of the Leica with black paint or using black tape to mask them. The Leica opened up new possibilities in photography — the ability to capture the world in its actual state of movement and transformation.
millimetres of the unexposed negative around the image area, resulting in a black frame around the developed picture. “...Technique is important only insofar as you must master it in order to communicate what you see... The camera for us is a tool, not a pretty mechanical toy. In the precise functioning of the mechanical object perhaps there is an unconscious compensation for the anxieties and uncertainties of daily endeavor. In any case, people think far too much about techniques and not enough about seeing.” Henri Cartier-Bresson’s style and vision has influenced the way I approach my photography and I hope you will feel inspired too.
This camera gave Cartier-Bresson what he called “the velvet hand...the hawk’s eye.” He never photographed with flash either, a practice he saw as “impolite...like coming to a concert with a pistol in your hand.” He believed in composing his photographs in the viewfinder, not in the darkroom. He showcased this belief by having nearly all his photographs printed only at full-frame and completely free of any cropping or other darkroom manipulation. He insisted that his prints (He disliked developing or making his own prints) were not cropped as they include the first few

LIFESTYLE Wheat is a common food allergen, causing digestive, immune-related, and weight problems in many. According to Dr William Davis, author of “Wheat Belly”, gluten also appears to be an appetite stimulant... Wheat is addictive too! Gluten-derived polypeptides can cross into the brain and bind to the brain’s opiate receptors. The result is a mild euphoria after eating a product made with wheat.
a life without
Wheat
The only way one can really tell, if gluten or wheat is a significant cause of your health or gut problems, is to eliminate it from the diet. Whilst testing can certainly help identify gluten sensitivity, the only way a person will really know if gluten is problematic is by doing the gold standard “allergy test” – i.e. eliminating the suspect food for 2-4 weeks.
28
E
Wheat contains a starch called amylopectin A, which is quickly converted to blood sugar. This leads to a fast, and high rise in blood sugar and insulin; commonly linked to the development of diabetes, weight gain and obesity. Wheat contains a particular lectin (a protein) called WGA. WGA is largely responsible for many of wheat’s ill effects such as gut inflammation, and digestive complaints. Recent research has shown that wheat consumption in “healthy normals” causes a condition called leaky gut. Leaky gut tends to promote lowgrade inflammation, which is an underlying characteristic of heart disease, cancer and autoimmune problems. Wheat also contains a substance called phytate, which may lead to reduced absorption of minerals such as zinc and iron. High wheat-based diets often have a high glycaemic index, or “High GI”. High GI diets are linked to obesity and diabetes.
Should you go on a wheat free diet?
A wheat-free diet is not the same as a gluten-free diet, but many of the same foods must be eliminated. Most wheat-free diets are put in place due to a wheat allergy. Wheat is one of the top eight allergens and is most often seen in children who eventually outgrow it. If you are on a diet that must not contain wheat, it is possible to create a well-balanced meal plan with some careful planning. A wheat free diet has many health benefits, but it’s important to know the facts. Wheat and gluten are often used interchangeably, but it’s important to understand that whilst wheat and gluten do go “hand in hand”, these are two distinct different groups of proteins. Gluten is not just present in wheat; it’s also present in other grains too, such as barley, rye, oats, spelt and kamut grain. Wheat (and therefore gluten), is present in thousands of everyday foods worldwide. Also be aware, even simple packaged foods such as soups, ready meals and sweets contain fillers such as wheat flour, and therefore contain gluten too!
Wheat free eating
You’ve decided to stop eating foods containing wheat… what else is there you ask? While changing over to a wheat-free diet does take some adjustments, it is becoming easier and easier to eat this way as food manufacturers, health food shops and even supermarkets are making and stocking more and more wheat-free products.

Wheat Free AlternativeS: • • • • • • • • • •
You can find Wheat free (Gluten free) bread in most supermarkets. Wheat free cakes and biscuits are becoming more widely available too. Original Ryvitas are 100% rye. Some corn flakes, rice crispies and many muesli’s are wheat free. Also oat, rice and polenta porridges. Cooked brown rice with yoghurt, honey and fruit is a great alternative. 100% buckwheat, rye, soy, rice, potato flours. Use brown rice to make risottos. Experiment with wheat free pastas - the corn pasta is generally better than the rice ones or even use rice, millet or quinoa. Have hot chocolate, herbal tea, dandelion “coffee” or chai teas to aid digestion. Look for rice noodles and 100% buckwheat noodles Some commercially available baking powders are wheat free, try using bicarbonate of soda.
Wheat free (Gluten free) alternatives are available from most Spanish supermarkets or health food shops; you may find wheat free sausages from your local butchers.

QUICK TIP: If buying your chicken breasts (pechuga de pollo) from you local Spanish butcher, they sometimes have some of the breast bone still attached, ask for it to be “sin huesos” and they’ll trim that out for you.
Ingredients • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper • 6 slices cheese, Gruyere or Emmental are ideal • 4 slices cooked ham • 60g seasoned dried breadcrumbs
method
Serving suggestion
First off, preheat your oven and lightly oil a baking dish or line with baking parchment. Flatten the chicken breasts to approx 5mm (half a cm) thickness using a rolling pin or heavy pan on a sturdy kitchen surface. Use cling film to cover, not greased paper or foil as this can tear. Alternatively, slice a pocket into each breast or butterfly them. Season each piece of chicken on both sides with salt and pepper and place 1 cheese slice and 1 ham slice on top (or inside) of each breast. Roll up or close and secure with a wooden skewer. Place in baking dish, and sprinkle chicken evenly with breadcrumbs. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove from oven, and place 1/2 cheese slice on top of each breast. Return to oven for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheese has melted. Remove skewers, and serve immediately. 30

Processionary CaterpillarS
A big risk to your pets each year! Processionary caterpillars are parasites of the pine trees, they form white, cottonwool-like nests on the pine trees and once a year in spring, depending on the outside temperature, they leave their nests one after the other in a “Procession and transform later into butterflies. The dangerous time starts when they leave their nests. In our region the most dangerous time is February-March while in more northern regions of Spain it is April-May.
The Caterpillars have highly poisonous hairs. Wherever humans come in touch with them with their skin, they suffer deep wounds like chemical burns and often serious allergic reactions. Our pets are at very high risk when the caterpillar is outside its nest as they are often very curious and stick their noses in them or step on them or try to play with them - with the result of horrible injuries. When they step on them, the paws get burnt and infected, after licking the paws the tongue swells up and causes a life threatening breathing problem and your pet can lose part, or all of their tongue. The worst case is an eye contact. If the eye gets burnt, very often they loose it. Treatment of caterpillar poisoning is possible but very intensive and sometimes it is not possible to avoid permanent damage. Around this time of year, it is very important to be attentive and avoid every contact with them. If you have pine trees in your property, cut off the white nests in winter and burn them to avoid the procession in spring. If you see a procession in your garden, only remove them with special protective clothes and masks to avoid any skin and eye contact!

Florida Keys
opening up a tropical paradise.
’s Adele Land
ION DESTINAT .. REPORT.
Wild Key Deer
If you fancy a holiday to Florida but want to avoid the theme parks and built-up cities, the Florida Keys are a fabulous option to see a different part of the Sunshine State.
Stretching some 190 kilometres, starting south of Miami and ending in Key West, the southernmost tip of the United States, the Keys are made up of a string of tropical islands, connected by bridges and the overseas highway known as route US1. In the early 20th century the keys were only accessible by water until an overseas railway was built, despite the project being delayed by three hurricanes, the railway served travellers until it was finally destroyed in 1935 by the Labour Day hurricane, one of the worst in US history. The US1 was built shortly after and runs from Key Largo to Key West, allowing travellers an opportunity to view an array of wildlife on the journey and giving access to the largest coral reef in the US. Driving down the Keys is like going back in time with lowrise buildings replacing the skyscrapers of Miami. 42 bridges connect the Keys including, the longest, ‘seven-mile bridge’, which runs alongside what’s left of the old railways bridge. The tropical climate makes the Keys a perfect home for flora and fauna not found in any other part of the United States, including, Red Maple trees and Key Lime trees, an important ingredient for the famous Key Lime pie. The Key Deer is a protected species, turn off the main highway and it is not unusual to find these shy creatures wandering in people’s gardens. Another creature, you may 50
not want roaming in your garden, is the American Crocodile also native to the area. The pinnacle of a trip to the Florida Keys is arriving in famous Key West but it is well worth taking your time and enjoying some stopovers on the less well-know islands. Key Largo is the northernmost key and offers everything for the water sports enthusiast. Diving is incredible here and the calm sea lends itself to paddle-boarding or windsurfing. Boat tours are also in abundance many guaranteeing dolphin sightings. Accommodation is plentiful and in all price ranges, from the higher end Marriot Resort to smaller motels. Further south, another good stopping point is Islamorada with its white sand and beachside eateries. Marathon is one of the larger keys and is a haven for boat enthusiasts with its large marina and just north of Key West is Sugarloaf Key, a personal recommendation is a stay in the Sugarloaf Lodge with rooms right by the water and a wonderful Tiki hut for evening cocktails. Key West, once owned by Cuba, has had a chequered history and was once famous for salt production. Other industries included, salvaging and fishing and the island was once the richest town in the US. These days,
Key West is a popular tourist spot, cruise ship destination and party town. Proud of its military heritage, the town is home to a large Navy Station which is a key training base for ‘Top Gun’ pilots. Houses and properties in Key West are built in typical ‘gingerbread house’ style, with wooden siding, porches and shuttered windows. One of the most famous buildings is the Hemmingway House, the writer lived here in the 1930s and day passes are sold to view this fascinating house. President Harry S Truman also had a home here and travelled down on many weekends during his presidency. The main street in the heart of town is Duval street which stretches down to the port which is the southernmost tip of the United States, just 140 kilometres from neighbouring Cuba, in fact Key West is closer to Cuba than Miami. Duval boasts numerous restaurants including the well-known, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, home of the infamous volcano nachos. If you are looking for gifts to take home, Duval is the place to shop, with everything from tacky tee-shirts to elegant jewellery. If you want a more permanent souvenir, there are tattoo shops-a-plenty, fortunately, the professionals have a ’too much drink - no ink’ policy, pop back the next day when you know you really want one! An excellent trip in Key West is the sunset cruise on an old schooner which takes you out at sunset where the photo opportunities are spectacular, drinks and snacks are served and everyone gets the chance to haul up the mainsail. An unusual place to visit is the Key West cemetery where some of the one-liners carved in the gravestones are enough to get the coffins rumbling with ironic chuckles. My particular favourite was the inscription which read “I told you I was sick”! There are hundreds of hotels or B&Bs in Key West, mostly offering similar nightly rates. Accommodation is in the traditional-style buildings, many of which have delightful pool areas where you can enjoy an al fresco breakfast.
Hemmingway House
While walking or pedal-power are the best ways to get around this completely flat island, you need a car to get there, unless you opt to take the short flight from Miami but the you miss the whole Keys experience. I recommend renting an open top car, download a Beach Boys album and take yourself back to the sixties on a true American road trip. Be aware of speed limits on the US1, traffic patrols are everywhere and as friendly as they are, the highway police don’t take kindly to being asked to participate in a souvenir selfie! The best time to travel to the Florida Keys is between November and May, outside of the official hurricane season, but the summer months can also be enjoyable. While the rest of Florida suffers in the humidity of summer, the Keys are cooled by sea breezes and can be a good few degrees cooler, making it a popular spot for Floridians to spend the weekend. Getting to the Florida Keys couldn’t be easier, direct flights are available between Madrid and Miami with Iberia, or you can fly to nearby Fort Lauderdale from Barcelona with Norwegian Air. Then all that’s left to do is load up the Corvette or Mustang and hit the road!

Winning The Masters 2017
Masters 2017: The clubs that Sergio Garcia used to win Masters. Sergio Garcia is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to the equipment he used to win Masters 2017. For years he has ground his own wedges in the TaylorMade tour van. Instead of having wood shafts of different weight (usually there is a 10gram difference from club to club), he uses Mistubishi’s Kuro Kage Silver 80X in all his woods. For his TaylorMade P750 Tour Proto irons he puts 30-gram weights in the end of the grip to counterbalance them. Garcia had been using lead tape to accomplish that up until the 2010 Valero Texas Open, when TaylorMade tour techs discovered the availability of the weight plugs that could go into the butt end of the grip. Garcia counterbalances the clubs to make the swingweight feel lighter. The shafts in his irons are Nippon’s Modus 130X model.
What’s in the bag? Ball: TaylorMade TP5 Driver: TaylorMade M2 2017 (Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Silver 80X) 9.5 degrees 3-wood: TaylorMade M1 2017 15 degrees
5-wood: TaylorMade M1 2017 19 degrees Irons (3-PW): TaylorMade P750 Tour Proto Wedges: TaylorMade Milled Grind (54, 58 degrees) Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour
Garcia also changed two key components of his equipment this year—his driver (to TaylorMade’s M2 2017) and golf ball (to the company’s five-layer TP5 ball). All told, it turned into a winning combination.

The US Open, 2017
During the week of June the 12th-18th, 2017, the U.S. Open Championship will be contested in Wisconsin for the first time. The championship will welcome the world’s top players vying for the title that has been contested since 1895. The United States Golf Association will provide the ultimate, most comprehensive test in golf to identify the best of the best, with past champions including Bob Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Wisconsin’s own Andy North and Tiger Woods. The U.S. Open is played at iconic venues around the country, with 51 courses to date holding the distinction of U.S. Open sites, of which Erin Hills, will be its 117th playing. Erin Hills will be the sixth public access course to host the championship (joining Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Bethpage, Torrey Pines and Chambers Bay). More than 35,000 spectators are expected to attend each day, and more
54
than 5,000 volunteers are needed (and those positions have already been filled). The championship will support the community through more than $130 million in anticipated economic impact. Erin Hills is a course like none other, routed over the kettle moraine areas left by glaciers, surrounded by wetlands and a river, with ground that consists of glacial till of varied composition of sand and small rock. In an unconventional decision for a course in Wisconsin, the architects used fine fescue for the fairways to emphasize the natural contours of the
property and provide a firm-playing surface that plays shorter than it’s length on the scorecard. The course was designed to accommodate the U.S. Open, in terms of both the challenge to the players and the logistics of the spectators and related support structure. This mix of traditional and modern elements as well as a championship test will leave many golfers with the feeling that they’ve never played anywhere like Erin Hills. Erin Hills lis ocated 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee and 115 miles from Chicago.

Mojácar’s “Moors and Christians” fiesta will be on the 9th, 10th & 11th of June this year so don’t miss out...but what is it all about? There is no doubt but that Mojácar´s biggest fiesta, anticipated keenly all year long, is the “Moors and Christians”. The entire town, together with many adopted residents, divide themselves into various guilds, called cábilas, who will parade through the town dressed in costly eye-catching and colourful costumes as Arab or Christian soldiers and captains. The Moors & Christians fiestas, held throughout South, East Spain and especially in Valencian communities, commemorate the battles fought between Moors (or Muslims) and Christians during the period known as “Reconquista”. In English, reconquista means reconquest. Eventually, the Moors were defeated by the Christians, ending approximately 800 years of Moorish rule in Spain – from the 7th century until the 15th century. The Mojácar event however, is held to remember the peaceful and negotiated surrender of Mojácar and the surrounding villages to the Christian King at the end of the 15th century.
There were “no winners or losers”, the events motto, and the essence of this peaceful co-existence and mutual respect between cultures and religions, between Moor, Catholic and Jew, still remains alive today in the hearts of the people of Mojácar. For this reason, they enthusiastically prepare all year long for their chance to join in the long procession, held on the Sunday and marking the end of the fiesta, combining the public with actors, musicians, horsemen, dancers, captains and retinues, and many more ingredients besides, to offer a beguiling spectacle of light, colour, noise and merriment for the crowds like a story from the Thousand and One Nights. Not to be missed either are the horse parade and taming exhibition on the beach front with the very loud blunderbuss shots from sea and land. There is also the medieval tournament where Moors and Christian knights try to get the most scarves made by ladies to win their favours. Finally the troops march towards the Parque Comercial. For more information and to check the full itinerary of events, please visit www.ayuntamiento.mojacar.es

Circuit de Barcelona CATALUNYA
For all you racing fans, we thought we’d take a more in-depth look at the Circuit in Barcelona, home of that Spanish leg of the F1 calendar. This year the F1 weekend kicks off with practice on Friday 12th May, with qualifying on Saturday 13th May and the main race on Sunday 14th May. It’s not been just for the F1 though and the circuit has quite a back story.
History
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a motorsport race track in Montmeló, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. With long straights and a variety of corners and is seen as an all-rounder circuit. The track has stands with a capacity of 140,700. and has an FIA Grade 1 license. It was built in 1991 and began hosting the Spanish Grand Prix that same year. Until 2013 the track was known only as the Circuit de Catalunya, before a sponsorship deal with Barcelona City Council added Barcelona to the track’s title.
where riders are known to overtake. As in Formula 1, Turn 1 is arguably the most popular place for overtaking but in general, the circuit is not known to produce copious amounts of overtaking, despite the long straights.
Racing History
The circuit has been the site of some memorable moments in recent history. In 1991, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell went down the entire front straight side-by-side while dueling for second place, with Mansell eventually taking the position and ultimately the race itself. In 1994, Michael Schumacher managed to finish in second place despite driving over half the race with only fifth gear. But in 1996, He managed to take his first win as a Ferrari driver, after a dominant performance during a torrential rainstorm.
Because so much testing is done at this circuit, Formula One drivers and mechanics are extremely familiar with it. This has led to criticism that drivers and mechanics are too familiar with Catalunya, reducing the amount of on-track action.
The 1999 race was notable as there was only one reported overtaking move during the race and in 2001, Mika Häkkinen suffered a clutch failure while leading the race on the last lap, handing the win to Schumacher. At the 2006 event, Fernando Alonso became the first Spanish Formula One driver to win at his home country’s track.
It has also hosted a motorcycle Grand Prix since 1992, originally the European motorcycle Grand Prix from 1992 and later the Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix since 1996. There are at least five points on the track (turns 1, 2, 4, 10, 14)
At the 2009 motorcycle Grand Prix, teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo fought all race long for first place, culminating in an overtake on the final corner by Rossi. Riders and pundits described the race as “historic” and “genius”.

spoken languages.
Determining which languages are spoken most in the world is a more difficult task than you might imagine. One small caveat: assigning hard data, in the form of “X million native speakers,” to any of these languages is practically impossible but this is the latest from 2016. What constitutes a language, a dialect, or a subdialect, is highly contested. And even when linguists do agree on a category, how similar is the English spoken in the Scottish Highlands to the English spoken in Baltimore’s city center? Yet at least two speakers from these regions would be able to communicate, in some manner. More troubling is the fact that what we refer to simply as “Chinese” is actually a whole family of languages conveniently lumped into a single category. “Hindi” is also used as a catchall term to cover numerous dialects and sub-dialects. And we’ve not yet acknowledged the unreliability of data sources, collected at different times by different institutions. This list has obviously changed quite drastically over hundreds of years as populations grow and empires have changed. For Example, German was edged out of the chart by Punjabi around 10 years ago!
1. Chinese
Numbers vary widely — Ethnologue puts the number of native speakers at almost 1.2 billion native speakers, roughly a billion of whom speak Mandarin — but there is no doubt of its clout. If you wish to learn a language that one in six people in the world speak, this is the one for you. A tonal language with pictograms, it will certainly keep you busy.
2. Spanish
If we are only to look at native speakers, Spanish has its nose in front of English with about 400 million speakers. If you want a language that will open up whole continents to you, Spanish is your best bet. As with all the languages on this list, the politics of language and associated identity are highly disputed: ask Catalan or Quechua speakers if Spanish is their local tongue and you will get a very different answer. But it is certainly the primary language of most of South & Central America, Spain & large swathes of USA.
3. English
There are calculated to be 360 million-odd native English speakers, a half a billion people who speak it as a second language. This indicates the remarkable success of English as the lingua franca of business, travel and international relations. The relative ease with which English can be picked up (especially compared with Chinese) and the pervasive soft power of US culture mean that English will continue to dominate the world stage.
4. Hindi/Urdu
India has 23 official languages, with Hindi/Urdu chief among them. Whether this is one language, Hindustani, or two dialects, is still fiercely contested. Spoken mainly in northern India and parts of Pakistan, Hindi uses devnagri script while Urdu uses Persian notation. If you ever travel in the Indian subcontinent, a little Hindi will get you a long way. Plus, this is the language that gave us shampoo, jungle, jodhpurs and bungalow — what’s not to love?

the world’s
MOST...
5. Arabic
Recent numbers put Arabic at around 250 million native speakers. Arabic, like Chinese, is so vastly different in its respective dialects as to be effectively a number of languages, grouped as one for the sake of convenience. Modern Standard Arabic is a primarily written form, closely related to the Classical Arabic of the Quran. However, the spoken forms of Arabic in, say, Oman and Morocco are so different that a couple of philosophy professors from these countries might be able to discuss the finer points of the ancient texts while struggling to order lunch.
6. Portuguese
Another language whose reach owes much to its colonial past. Starting in the 15th century, avid Portuguese traders and conquerors brought their language to Africa, Asia and the Americas. The spread of Portuguese may have initially been tied to European colonization, but the colonized countries developed their own vibrant cultures that transformed the language forever. Today, Portuguese is spoken by 215 million native speakers in countries like Brazil, Goa, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bisseau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Macau.
7. Bengali
The Partition of Bengal by the British in 1947 divided (mainly Hindu) West Bengal, now part of India, from its (mainly Muslim) counterpart East Bengal, now Bangladesh. It is the language of Kolkata, of the Andaman Islands, of fabulous sweets, and of 170-odd million Bangladeshis, many of whom are extremely vulnerable to climate change; by the next century, the population is projected to double while 15% of the land area is expected to disappear below rising seas.
8. Russian
With roughly 170 million native speakers, Russian is the eighth most spoken language in the world. Famed for its inscrutable grammar and quite lovely Cyrillic script, it remains one of the six languages spoken in the UN.
9. Japanese
Almost all of the 130 million native Japanese speakers live in Japan, certainly the most highly geographically concentrated of all the languages on this list. Japanese boasts two distinct writing systems, hiragana and katakana, as well making extensive use of Chinese Kanji characters. The largest groups living outside Japan can be found in the US, the Philippines, and Brazil.
10. Punjabi (Lahnda)
With varying estimates of around 100 million native speakers, last spot on the list goes to… Punjabi! (Just pushing out German a few years back.) Spoken in large tracts of India and Pakistan, the Punjab was sliced in two by the British when they left, and millions of people were forced to abandon their homes, businesses and families. But they’re slowly taking their revenge, Bollywoodstyle: Punjabi songs now account for 50% of chart-toppers!

THE GARNERS
Business is booming for this top Almerian real estate agency following regular appearances on a successful UK property show. Spanish Property Choice run by the Garner family from the Midlands, have lived and worked in Spain for the past 12 years, was one of only two family estate agents featured on the popular Channel 4 series, Sun, Sea and Selling Houses. The Garners covered the Almeria. The 20, hour long programmes follow the day to day business of this agency selling dream Spanish properties to British and international investors. It also chronicles family adventures along the way. And it seems Mum Sharon, Dad Steve, daughter Emma, son Shaun and son-in-law Matt have made quite an impression on the viewers following their trials and tribulations. But the firmly established agency has also seen a big demand from those seeking properties in the sun. So much so, their Facebook page has been swamped with messages and enquiries causing a few late nights in the Garner family household. Sharon takes up the story: “It was a great pleasure to be asked to take part in the series. Although other agents in our area were filmed for the taster show, we were so proud to be one of only 2, the other being the Rodriquez family in Alicante, to be offered the series. We’re all absolutely over whelmed by the huge response. We’ve actually had a few sleepless nights just trying to keep up with the enquiries, currently around 30-50 emails an hour at some points. We’ve now have almost 7000 followers on Facebook and have over 75,000 hits a day on our website. We have clients who watched the show contacting us from not only the UK, but from Ireland, Florida, Paphos, Crete, Portugal, France, Italy and all over Spain asking us to find 74
them their dream home in the sun. Business has always been good, but this extra exposure has really fired things up. We hoped it would go well. But this has all been well above our expectations.” So what’s been the secret of the families success? Steve told us: “I think viewers and prospective buyers have seen just how honest we all are. We’ve just got on with things and been ourselves throughout the filming. In fact, it was so well done we sometimes forgot the cameras were there. We are all passionate about delivering a first class service and helping people to fulfil their dreams along the way. When we recommend a property, it’s almost as if we are thinking of buying it ourselves. We always offer advice and guidance relating to the real day to day world in Spain, and people appreciate that. Shaun added: “I think viewers have identified strongly with the family feel of the series. They can see we are all genuine people who have just the same ambitions and dreams as them. Potential buyers need to know they can fully trust those advising them, and we look upon each client as a new friend we’re trying to help. It’s strange at first, to see yourself on telly, but it was great fun to do. When Stephen and Sharon moved to this beautiful province of Costa Almería, their original intention was to semi retire. Their son Shaun attended a Spanish public school, and Emma found employment initially for a Spanish recreational company. However after a very short period of time, Stephen and Sharon were head hunted by a Spanish Property Developer in Olula del Río, who saw potential in the

historical experience they both had to offer the Spanish Real Estate Market. Consequently they opened their first office predominantly selling old farmhouses, cave houses and traditional Spanish village houses full of charm and character. The rest as they say, is history.
in the show, are very much at the heart of their communities and enabled us to see what life in the sun is really like. The Garners, are making waves on the Spanish property scene in Mojacar. Mum Sharon and Dad Steve may be the bosses, but the agency is a real family affair.
Spanish Property Choice have successfully developed into the regions leading Real Estate Agency, now leading the market for Inland and Coastal re-sale properties and long term rentals.
Sun Sea and Selling Houses was commissioned my David Sayer for Channel 4, Executive Produced by Rob Butterfield and Series Produced by Emma Walsh for Ricochet.
Rob Butterfield, Executive Producer for Ricochet (Warner Bros) says: “We can all relate to wanting to give up Blighty to go live in sunny Spain. This series is following the Brits chasing that dream, and the people helping them make it a reality, living the dream themselves. Our two families featured 75
