Craft beer goes cool Once the favourite tipple of older men in equally old country pubs, craft beer is enjoying a renaissance around the world. Craft, or artisan beer as it is popularly known, is produced in small, ‘microbreweries’ in smaller amounts than the larger corporate breweries. Although dating back many centuries, craft beer became popular in the UK in the 1970s and the trend soon spread across Europe and to the US. Now is a great time to be a beer drinker as in the UK there are more than 1,700 craft breweries and at least 10 times more in the US. ‘Tap houses’ are popping up everywhere, many on the same premises as the brewery, giving enthusiasts a chance to see the beer being made before tasting the resulting brew. Popular traditional styles include Pilsner, Stout and Golden Ale, while new quirky flavours including, mocha, blueberry, chocolate and hibiscus are popping up everywhere.. A wellknown craft brewery in India even boasts a bacon flavoured beer! Here in Spain, the trend is also catching on with more than 50 types of craft beer produced in Almeria alone.
6
by Adele Land
An annual event dedicated to craft beers takes place annually during May in Almeria and popular brands such as El Cabo, Far West and Filabres all feature in this popular brew-fest. Bars and restaurants from mountain to coast are stocking more craft beers to cater for the surge in demand and proprietors of some specialist establishments say sales are outweighing that of established lagers such as San Miguel or Cruzcampo. For the uninitiated, choosing a craft beer can be a minefield so to accommodate the novice drinker some tap houses or pubs serve ‘taster sets’, mini glasses served in sets of usually four or six where you can taste a range of flavours without having to opt for a pint or full bottle, this a great way of easing yourself into the trend and remain standing at the end of the night! Craft beer is less about ‘having a drink’ and more about enjoying the experience, so whether you are a beer drinker or not, throw caution to the wind and see what all the fuss is about in a tap house near you!

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach in the operation codenamed “Dynamo” using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found.
Principal photography commenced on 23rd May 2016 in Dunkirk, France; in the months following, production proceeded in Urk, Netherlands, Swanage and Weymouth in Dorset, United Kingdom and at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center and Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes, United States. Filming in Dunkirk took place in the same location as the real historical evacuation.
Dunkirk, with a cinema release of 21st July worldwide, is directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Night, Interstellar, Inception, Memento) and starring Kenneth Branagh, Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles (yes him from One Direction), Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance & Tom Hardy.
Around 6,000 extras were used during the shoot. Nolan investigated silent films to influence crowd scenes with suspense using only details because of the minuscule presence of dialogue in the film.
Nolan wrote the story with the intention to tell it from three perspectives – the air, land and sea. Efforts were made to create suspense solely through details, as the script contained little dialogue.
8
Interestingly, one of the biggest current stars in the film, Tom Hardy, who plays a pilot, spent a bulk of his shooting schedule inside a cockpit and had limited exposure to the rest of the cast and crew.

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.
N332 is an informational portal written by ex Guardia Civil to give important information on Spanish Roads and educate ex pats and visitors on safety on driving in Spain. As well as other information regarding living and visiting Spain.
OVER 31,000 SPEEDERS CAUGHT During a 7-day campaign focussing on speeding motorists throughout Spain, 581,294 vehicles were checked by the Guardia Civil (not including local or regional police forces), of which 31,086 were found breaking the law. The campaign ran between the 17th & 23rd of April, focussing mostly on the secondary road network, where the majority of serious and fatal incidents occur. Four of the drivers caught face criminal proceedings as they exceeded the maximum permitted speed limit by more than 80 kilometres per hour. Drivers caught speeding face fines of between 100 and 600 euro, plus the loss of between 2 and six points. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 kilometres per hour on urban roads, or 80 kilometres per hour on major roads, transfers the offence to criminal, with offenders facing between six to twelve months in prison, community service and the withdrawal of the licence for up to 4 years, in addition to a hefty fine. A general guide to the limits is on the right and below, you’ll find the table which indicates the points and fines you’ll get when caught speeding in certain limited areas.

THINGS TO DO... PLACES TO SEE.
Nautarum Garrucha Garrucha’s museum of all things nautical and related to the Mediterranean sea, all inside a castle.
On arrival in Garrucha, coming from the direction of Mojácar, you’ll see the Nautarum cultural center/museum in all it’s splendour as the old, fortified castillo on your left as you approach the town. Dedicated to the knowledge, promotion and enjoyment of the sea and everything it has to offer (without getting your feet wet!) it is situated inside the Castle of Jesus Nazareno de Garrucha, also called the Escobetas, a construction of the XVIII century. The museum houses many exhibits and informational articles throughout its 6 main rooms.
Room 1: A Sea of History.
Originally the Guard room for the Artillery Barracks, this room takes the cultural impact of the Mediterranean sea to the area even further and into more detail.
Room 3: The Sea that Unites Us.
With it’s original use being as the chapel and chaplain’s lodging, It now offers information of many of the great unions formed across the Mediterranean during the contemporary period. “The sea that unites us” refers to the sea as a channel of travel and communication and It highlights the unique role played by Garrucha historically and currently with it’s important economical role in the area with its many exports.
Room 4: Navigation and Fishing.
This was originally a warehouse and gunpowder store but now houses exhibits relating to the geological & cultural aspects of the Mediterranean Sea basin.
Room 2: A Sea of Cultures.
This room devotes the largest space to the analysis of fishing and how fishing has been seen as a form of navigation. Fishing in Garrucha has generated a whole new culture and it explains how the Garrucheros (Garrucha locals) express various this with forms of the arts, creative techniques, and local knowledge. The fishing fleet, the fish market and the characteristic species that make Garrucha port known worldwide (think Garrucha Prawns!) all have their space in this room. There is also a model of a vessel representative of the “Garruchera” fishing fleet.

THINGS TO DO... PLACES TO SEE.
Room 5: Underwater world.
Originally that of the Caballeriza (Stables), it is now dedicated to the underwater world. Highlighting all that this fascinating environment produces; Life and underwater ecology, the different submarine domains, flora and fauna, and the unique aspects present in the Levante region of Almeria.
Room 6: Service Area.

QI THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA • The name “Mediterranean” has been derived from two Latin words “Medius” and “Terra”. The first term means “middle” and the second “earth (as in soil)”.
• The tallest active volcano of Europe, Mt Etna (10,922 ft) is in the island of Sicily. It is one of the most active volcanoes of the world.
• The average depth of the Mediterranean is 4,900 ft but the deepest point is 17,280 ft. The name of this deepest point is “Calypso Deep” which is in the Ionian Sea, near Greece.
• Some of the other major islands of the Mediterranean Sea are Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus, & Crete. Sardinia and Cyprus both have more than 1 million inhabitants.
• The Mediterranean Sea has two sub divisions – the Eastern and Western. A sub-sea ridge from Sicily to Tunisia is the divider. The ridge is called as the “Strait of Sicily”.
• The Mediterranean Sea is subdivided into many smaller seas like the Alboran Sea, Ligurian Sea, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea & Ionian Sea etc. Among these the Adriatic touches largest number of countries.
• 5.96 million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea was almost dried up. That event is known as “Messinian salinity crisis”. The crisis lasted for almost 630,000 years. • The Mediterranean has joined the Atlantic with the narrow strait of Gibraltar. It is less than 8 miles wide in some points.
• The Mediterranean region has a special climate characterized by hot dry summer and cool, wet winter. The vegetation of the region is specially equipped to survive the long very dry summer months.
• The Mediterranean Sea is longer from east to west than north to south. It is 2,400 miles long and in some parts, close to 1000 miles wide. It covers an area of 970,000 sq miles.
• The “Strait of Dardanelles” connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The strait is more like a river as it is 38 miles long and 0.75 to 3.73 miles wide. The water at the surface flows from the Marmara to the Aegean. An undercurrent flows at the opposite direction.
• Submarine karst springs can be observed in many coastal regions of the sea. Ground water is released from these springs. That water is highly pressurized, fresh and sometimes even hot.
• The “Strait of Bosporus” connects the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea. The length of the channel is about 17 miles and width varies from 1.8 to 2.8 miles. The city of Istanbul is located in both sides of the strait.
• The sea touches 3 continents – Asia, Africa and Europe. The Southern part of Europe, Western Asia and North Africa encircle the ocean.
• The “Suez Canal” connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea. It is about 120 miles in length. It is the shortest sea route from Europe and Asia which. It reduces the sea voyage distance by about 4,000 miles. That is why the canal has immense economical importance. It is under the control of Egyptian government.
• Many countries have shoreline with the Mediterranean. Obviously there is Spain, France, Italy, Greece & Turkey but also Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and several Eastern European countries like Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro & Albania. • There are around 260 registered inhabited islands in the Med. There are many many more uninhabited though, some 1400 of these islands are under the administration of Greece and Croatia has around 1000 in total too! • Sicily is the largest of all Mediterranean islands with an area of 9,927 sq miles. It has a population of more than 5 million. This island is an autonomous region under Italy. 16
• The Mediterranean Sea is the home of many endemic species of fish and marine animals. Some of these are engendered like the Monk Seal, Loggerhead Turtle and the Green Turtle. • There are also some species of whales and dolphins to be found in the mediterranean of which the Pilot Whale and the Fin Whale are now engendered marine animals. • The Carthaginians called it the “Syrian Sea” and latter Romans called it “Mare Nostrum” (Latin for “Our Sea”)

The Great Sea. By David Abulafia
The Mediterranean. By Tim Jepson
Collins Complete Mediterranean Wildlife. By Paul Sterry
For over three thousand years, the Mediterranean Sea has been one of the great centres of world civilisation. From the time of historical Troy until the middle of the nineteenth century, human activity here decisively shaped much of the course of world history.
Mediterranean expert Tim Jepson takes you on a tour of the countries of the Northern Mediterranean and Adriatic, focusing on the major cruise ports from Gibraltar to Turkey, including Barcelona, Valencia, Nice, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Genoa, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Bari, Venice, Dubrovnik, Split, Athens, and Istanbul, as well as nearby towns and sites. This all-new guide features an abundance of practical info on how to get to the main ports from the ship, maps to guide you around when you’re there, and original commissioned artwork to help you appreciate what you’re seeing. The Travelwise section provides a sampling of places to eat and practical information about the individual countries.
The only fully comprehensive photographic guide currently available for the region, Complete Mediterranean Wildlife describes and illustrates 1500 species commonly found in the world’s most popular holiday destination.
David Abulafia’s The Great Sea is the first complete history of the Mediterranean from the erection of the mysterious temples on Malta around 3500 BC to the recent reinvention of the Mediterranean’s shores as a tourist destination. The Great Sea ranges stupendously across time and the whole extraordinary space of the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Jaffa, Venice to Alexandria. Rather than imposing a false unity on the sea and the teeming human activity it has sustained, the book emphasises diversity - ethnic, linguistic, religious and political. Anyone who reads it will leave it with their understanding of those societies and their histories enormously enriched.
Mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, butterflies and moths, other insects, spiders, slugs and snails, trees and flowering plants are all included, and each section is coded with a symbol for quick reference.
From Cyprus in the east to the western end of the Mediterranean, the guide also covers species found in Portugal and the Algarve. While most Mediterranean habitats are lowlying, the range of the guide extends into the Aimed at active travelers who want authentic, foothills of mountains. Shells and animals likely enriching, cultural experiences and expert to be seen while snorkelling are also described advice from a trustworthy source, National and illustrated. Geographic Travelers provide ways for people to experience a place rather than just visit, and give the true feel of each destination not easily found online.

Kale, quinoa, Greek yogurt. All are super-healthy foods you should be eating - and chances are you already are. Looking for a new über-healthy food to add to your repertoire? Check out this list! Whether your diet could use a health tune-up or already is the epitome of health, we think you’ll find at least one food on this list to add to your diet. These articles are to be used as a guide or reference only. Chia - These little seeds deliver as much protein as some nuts as well as heart-healthy alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fat. Per tablespoon, chia delivers 2 grams protein, 4 grams fiber and 1.75 grams ALA. Chia seeds may have celebrity status as the newest superfood fad, but they’ve been around for centuries (they were prized by the Aztecs). The seeds absorb liquid easily, gelling and making a creamy addition to oats and pancakes. That property also makes them easy on sensitive stomachs.
Coconut Flour - Coconut flour is a healthy way to add decadent coconut flavor to baked goods (as we used in the Coconut Dark-Chocolate Truffles, pictured left). As for health benefits of coconut flour: it packs a whopping 5 grams of fiber per 2 tablespoons (with only 2 grams of total and saturated fat) and it’s gluten-free. Coconut flour has health benefits for people with diabetes, too: adding coconut flour to baked goods lowers the glycemic index (a measure of the rate that a food increases blood sugar). In your market, look for coconut flour near other gluten-free flours.
Vegetable Smoothies - Usually a tasty delivery device for fruit. But adding vegetables—especially spinach and kale to make green smoothies—is all the rage these days, possibly thanks to a renewed interest in juicing. Even beets and sweet potato are making an appearance in smoothies (not together and typically in combination with fruit).
Skyr - is the traditional yogurt of Iceland and is comparable in texture and nutrition to Greek yogurt—delivering just as much protein, but for slightly fewer calories (perhaps because it’s always made with skimmed milk).
Seaweed - Dulse is a good source of potassium and iron and boasts loads of iodine, necessary in the regulation of the thyroid gland and usually found only in seafood or iodized salt. It has a salty, of-the-sea flavour and can be enjoyed in many forms. Look for it in natural-foods markets, where you’ll find it either in flakes or in bags of dried strips, and crumble it over soups or salads.
Hemp - Eating hemp seeds is increasingly popular. As versatile as, and similar in taste to, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds can be eaten raw, toasted, sprinkled on yogurt or salads or ground into seed butter. Per tablespoon, hemp seeds boast 16% of your daily value for phosphorus and magnesium, 1 gram of ALA and a little under 1 gram of fibre.
Kefir - Think yogurt in a glass. This fermented dairy beverage is packed with beneficial probiotics that may help give your immune system a little extra edge. Packed with calcium, kefir is the perfect choice for adding to smoothies in place of yogurt. Look for it in your local market and choose plain for less added sugars; if you want extra flavour, add fresh fruit or fruit puree for natural sweetness.
Rooibos Tea - Green tea isn’t the only super-healthy tea out there. Rooibos tea—a red-colored herbal tea made from the leaves of the rooibos bush—may protect your heart. People at risk of developing heart disease due to high cholesterol, blood pressure and/or body mass index) significantly lowered their triglycerides and “bad” LDL cholesterol and raised their “good” HDL cholesterol by drinking 6 cups of the tea daily over six weeks, says research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
Almond Milk - Plant-based “milks” are increasing popular. If you find yourself wandering into the alternative “milk” category, go for almond milk. It’s naturally high in calcium and if you buy one fortified with vitamin D, it’s comparable to cow’s milk and less in saturated fats.
Amaranth - It’s a boon for vegetarians because it’s high in both iron and zinc, nutrients that can be tough to get into a vegetarian diet, as well as protein. It’s also rich in calcium and magnesium—and is gluten-free. Grown as an ornamental for its pretty blooms as well as for its grains, amaranth grains have been cultivated in Central America for an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 years. When cooked, amaranth has a thick, porridgelike texture—great in soups, stews, breakfast porridge or puddings. 25

02 The camera platform mounted on Adams’ station wagon afforded him a better vantage point over the immediate foreground and a better angle for expansive backgrounds.
PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE PHOTOGRAPHERS Ansel Adams
by Dean Baker
Californian Ansel Easton Adams was born on February 20th, 1902 and passed away on April 22, 1984 leaving his legacy of stunning landscape photographs for us all to treasure and enjoy.
fig 1
Jeffrey Pine
From a young age, Adams was taught piano and although he ultimately gave up music for photography, the piano brought substance, discipline, and structure to his frustrating and erratic youth. Moreover, the careful training and exacting craft required of a musician profoundly informed his visual artistry, as well as his influential writings and teachings on photography. Adams is probably most famed for his black and white landscape photographs of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park but his photography went much further than that. His father gave him his first camera during that stay, a Kodak Brownie box camera, and he took his first photographs with his “usual hyperactive enthusiasm”. Adams avidly read photography magazines, attended camera club meetings, and went to photography and art exhibits.
magazine Aperture, which was intended as a serious journal of photography which also lead to Adams starting his annual workshops, teaching thousands of students up until 1981. In the final twenty years of his life, large format gave way to the 6x6cm medium format with Hasselblad being his camera of choice. “Moon and Half Dome” (1960) being his favourite photo made with that type of camera. “There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.” Asnel Adams
It was in the mid 20’s when he released his first portfolio: “le Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras” and it was the photo “Monolith, the Face of Half Dome” (fig 1) that became his defining and most notable beginning to his illustrious career. His realistic approach to photography, which relied more heavily on sharp focus, heightened contrast, precise exposure, and darkroom craftsmanship can be seen in this image, especially with the use of a red filter to heighten contrast. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs. He primarily used large-format cameras because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. In 1932, Adams, along with 6 other Californian photographers, formed Group f/64 which espoused “pure or straight photography” over pictorialism, f/64 being a very small aperture setting that gives great depth of field. Some 20 years later Adams was one of the founders of the

FOOD GLORIOUS
FOOD SALMON FISHCAKES A fail-safe recipe for a speedy fish supper - flaked salmon flavoured with parsley, dill and some secret ingredients. QUICK TIP: Anglers from all over the world travel to Spain, in particular, the beautiful Asturias region in the North, to land big salmon. It is a prize catch and it is a much sought after and savoured fish so look for it in your local supermarket or fish mongers rather than buying farmed Salmón.

PRE-HEAT THE GRILL FOR SALMON. HAVE THE HOB ON A MEDIUM TEMP
INGREDIENTS • 450g floury potato, cut into chunks. • 350g salmon (about 3 fillets) • 2 tsp tomato ketchup • 1 tsp English mustard • zest ½ lemon, plus wedges to serve • 1 heaped tbsp chopped parsley • 1 heaped tbsp chopped dill • 3 tbsp plain flour • 1 egg, beaten • 100g dried breadcrumbs
Serving suggestion
• 4 tbsp sunflower oil • Salad, to serve
METHOD • Heat the grill. Place the potatoes in a pan of water, bring to the boil, cover and cook for 12-15 mins until tender. Drain and leave to steam-dry, then mash. Meanwhile, season the salmon and grill for 5-6 mins until just cooked. Cool for a few mins, then break into large flakes. • Mix the potato, ketchup, mustard, zest, herbs and some seasoning. Lightly mix in the salmon, taking care not to break it up too much. Shape into 4 large fish cakes. • Put the flour, egg and breadcrumbs in 3 shallow dishes. Dip the cakes into the flour, dust off any excess, then dip in the egg, and finally coat in breadcrumbs. Heat the oil in a large pan. Fry the cakes over a medium-low heat for 3-4 mins each side until deep golden and heated through. Serve with salad and lemon wedges. 48

GARRUCHA
“Ex mari orta’, (Risen up from the sea), is the motto on its shield. “According to a Castilian chronicle of 1327, as a result of a raid by troops in the Kingdom of Granada, there came to exist a little village on the coast called Almoraic, a league from Mojácar and in the direction of Vera”. This is perhaps the first historical reference to this village. Vera and Mojácar often attempted to annexe this village until its independence in 1861. Even once this measure was passed, it was delayed until a Commission from Vera visited Queen Isabel II. The Catholic Monarchs even had to mediate by establishing in 1494 the tigual tax with which a fixed tax was collected for each load of fish which was sold in its port. The money collected was shared in established amounts between these two towns. In its municipal area, remains of prehistoric, Iberian, Carthaginian and Roman settlements have been found. In the nazari period there was a tower close to the sea, in the same place as the Town Hall today. The tower served as protection for the fishermen from the Christian raids which were very frequent at the time due to the fact it was very close to the border with the kingdom of Murcia. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1518. With reference to the fishing tradition the importance of the port must be mentioned. After the Christian conquest in 1488, the army was provisioned through this port and was therefore able to continue the campaign. From the Al-Andalus period there also existed a large store called “Casa de la Sal” or “Alfolí” to store the salt from Cabo de Gata, Dalias and Mazarron and distribute it inland. In the XVI century there are records of the wine, esparto grass and marble trade that passed through its port.
In spite of this commercial tradition, it was never a place that was settled because of the continuous raids by the Berber pirates who created a marked insecurity for centuries, with loss of property, lives and even the possibility of being captured and sold as a slave. Splendour for Garrucha would arrive with the mining peak of the XIX century. The discovery in 1838 of native silver in the valley of Jaroso in Cuevas de Almanzora initiated the mining fever of the province of Almeria. The port of Garrucha was the natural exit for a good part of the mineral obtained in the local mines. Various smelting works were created like that of San Ramon in 1841, to extract argentiferous lead. In 1858 this was converted into a blast furnace for melting iron from Bedar and Sierra Cabrera known as “El Martinete’; or that of San Jacinto in 1860. It became so important that various European countries such as England, France, Germany and Italy, established consulates for their embassies. The construction of a Mining Cable from Pinar de Bedar in 1887 and of the mining railway in 1890 increased its trade, if that were possible as it had already reached a significant level. In our century, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera the construction of the fishing harbour was approved. Currently the mining activity has ceased and fishing and tourism constitute the most important sources of its income. It has 68 boats dedicated to fishing in the traditional way, to boulter fishing and to trawling. The speciality of this harbour is fishing for red prawn. It also has a pleasure harbour and it maintains its commercial port, exporting more than a million tons of grain gypsum from the gypsum pits in Sorbas.

Magnificent Massachusetts
Beach Breeze Inn
Tucked away on the Northeast coast of the continental United States is the state of Massachusetts. Packed with history and oozing with old world charm, this state in New England has something for everyone, whether for a short break or a longer vacation. State capital, Boston, is a relatively small city by US standards and incredibly easy to get around. Logan airport is just on the edge of the city and easy to access by road or rail, as is the nearby port, a stopping point for international cruise liners and smaller ferries serving the numerous islands of the coast. Boston lays claim to a massive part of US history with surrounding towns famously home to some of the first settlers, many fleeing religious persecution in Europe. A fascinating walking tour is the Freedom Trail Tour which takes in the numerous landmarks dating back to the American revolution along with significant burial grounds and monuments dedicated to the founding fathers. The tour can be as long or as short as you like, with plenty of cafes and eateries en-route and the route is clearly marked and easy to navigate. Another popular excursion is the duck tour which travels by amphibious vehicle on land and water with a running commentary describing all the sights and places of interest. Anyone who is anyone in the US, be it masters of industry, top lawyers, or presidents and politicians boasts ivy league colleges as their Alma Mater. Harvard University is a sprawling 209-acre campus made up of majestic buildings with lush gardens, in the city of Cambridge across the river from downtown Boston. Harvard square has a contemporary feel with trendy bars and restaurants bustling with students from around the world. On the other side of Boston is tech-paradise MIT, another prestigious college with a more modern campus. Accommodation in Boston can be expensive so why not consider using Airbnb where you can go self-catering for a fraction of the cost. 52
A twenty-minute drive out of Boston brings you to the city of Salem, famous for its 17th century witch trials and immortalised in the famous Arthur Miller play, ‘The Crucible’. Visit the witch museum and take a walk or drive out to Gallows Hill where 11 people accused of witchcraft were hanged for their alleged allegiance with Satan. Stay right in the heart of history in the Stepping Stone Inn, next to the Witch Museum and within walking distance of some excellent eateries as well as a great tap house serving a range of artisan beers brewed on site. The six rooms at the inn are traditionally furnished, some with four poster beds, breakfast is served in the small dining room and guests can enjoy the comfortable living room to relax and read books about the area. This family-run establishment comes complete with house cat, one of the largest I have ever seen, which greets guests with a knowing stare and loud purr. Hollywood movie buffs will no doubt have seen, Oscar winning tear jerker, ‘Manchester by the Sea. The town is real and a short drive from Salem, a picture postcard town on the water’s edge with luxury properties at every turn. No visit to New England would be complete without a stay on Cape Cod, a 65-mile long peninsular with quaint towns dotted along the coast. Look at a map and many of the names will sound familiar, this area is not called New England for no reason! Around 30 minutes down the cape is the beautiful, picturesque town of Falmouth, the main street is reminiscent
of an English village, complete with churches, town hall and green spaces along with a wide range of restaurants, bars and even an Irish pub. Walking distance from the main street and right by the ocean is the Beach Breeze Inn, possible one of the prettiest hotels I have ever stayed in. You will be warmly welcomed by caretakers Walt and Sally and more often than not, owner, Don Filiault, will also be there to say hello. Rooms are either in the main house or in cottage style accommodation by the swimming pool. The property has been lovingly cared for by Don and his team and every room has its own unique feel and is exquisitely decorated. Some rooms have views across the Vineyard Sound where in the morning you can gaze upon Martha’s Vineyard rising through the sea mist. Early risers can enjoy complimentary pastries, and hot drinks are available to serve yourself throughout the day or night. The inviting communal kitchen/dining room is a great place to chat with friends new and old or find out more about the area from the genial hosts. For lovers of marine life, nearby Woods Hole is home to the Oceanographic Institute where you can take a tour of the facility and learn about the sea life native to the area. A 30-minute ferry ride from Woods Hole will take you to millionaire’s playground, Martha’s Vineyard, a 96 square mile island, popular with wealthy New Englanders and famously frequented by US presidents from John F Kennedy to Barrack Obama. Avoid the high cost of taking a car over and rent one at the port on arrival. The island is easy to drive around with plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat or shop for gifts. One of the prettiest towns on the island is Edgartown, with its clapboard houses, typical of the area, picket fences and pretty fishing port. Back on the Cape, heading south from Falmouth is Hyannis, famously home to the Kennedy family. Pay a visit to the JFK library and try to catch a glimpse of the vast compound where Jack and Jackie lived with other members of the famous clan. A ferry from Hyannis Port is the quickest way to get to Nantucket island, an hours ride across the water. They say in Nantucket, the Millionaires mow the lawns of the Billionaires, such is the extent of the wealth on this tiny island with cobbled streets lined with historical buildings. Nantucket is formerly famous for its whaling industry where men (and some women) spent years at sea in dangerous conditions hunting the majestic creatures whose flesh was more valuable than precious metals.
The Nantucket whaling museum is well worth a visit and boasts one of the largest collections of scrimshaw in the world. If you are looking for conveniently located accommodation, the Roberts Collection guest house, is made up of three buildings sharing a pretty courtyard overlooked by porches where guests can relax after a day of sightseeing. A trip to Cape Cod would not be complete without a visit to the furthest most point, Provincetown. A haven for the LGBTQ community, this quirky town is bustling with life and the main street boasts a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The waters off the coast od Provincetown are an important route for whales and thousands of people flock to the area in spring and autumn to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. Another cool place to visit is the Pilgrim Monument, a 252-foot-tall tower, built in 1907 to commemorate the arrival of the first pilgrims in the 1600s and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in the nearby harbour. A total of 116 steps and 60 ramps take you to the top of the tower where the views across the town and out to sea are fabulous. The Crowne Point Inn and Spa is a great place to stay, just back from the busy main street and with an on-site luxury spa. Breakfast is included and includes a good selection of delicious food including made to order hot food cooked by the friendly chef. Also included is a fun wine and cheese party each evening which is a great way to meet new friends and enjoy delicious nibbles and quality wines. Iberia has daily direct flights to Boston and the flight time is just around seven hours, car rental is reasonable and of course gasoline is a fraction of the cost in Europe. New England offers a surprise around every corner and does not disappoint. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, avoiding the harsh east coast winters and taking advantage of the spectacular colours and the changing landscape. Photography enthusiasts will be blown away by the endless photo opportunities and history buffs will relish in the wealth of places to visit. If you are looking for something completely different from your trip to the USA, New England and Massachusetts must be on your bucket list.

The British Open 2017
Royal Birkdale is the host for the 146th Open Championship on the 20th July. The course was first established in 1889, but was extensively redesigned in 1922 by Fred Hawtree and JH Taylor to create the current layout, which winds its way through the sand dunes towering over each of the fairways. Since first hosting The Open in 1954, the course has been (alongside Royal Lytham) the most regular venue for the Championship other than St Andrews. At Birkdale’s first Open, Peter Thomson won the first of three in succession; he returned to the same course in 1965 to add his fifth and final title. The 2017 event will be the tenth Open Championship played at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The most recent was in 2008, where Pádraig Harrington successfully defended his 2007 Open Championship title from Carnoustie. The current holder of “The Claret Jug” or The Golf Champion Trophy, presented to the winner of The Open Championship is Hendrick Stenson.

COSTLY GOLF MISTAKES By Tony Myles
Tiger Woods 2013 Masters
After getting a terrible break with his approach shot on No. 15 in the second round, hitting the flagstick and bouncing into the water, Woods appeared to save bogey by getting up and down from a similar spot. However, after the round it was determined that Woods took an illegal drop, something he unknowingly admitted to during a TV interview when he said he purposely dropped two yards behind the original spot since he liked that yardage better. Fortunately, Augusta National rules officials decided to assess Tiger a two-stroke penalty and not disqualify the 14-time major champion for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Dustin Johnson 2010 PGA Championship
second career major championship. But after birdieing the par-3 first hole to move into the lead by himself, Woosie was informed by caddie Miles Byrne that he had an extra driver in his bag, giving him 15 clubs, one more than the legal limit. Woosnam angrily tossed the extra driver to the ground and proceeded to bogey two of the next three holes. He never recovered, finishing third to David Duval. Apparently, neither did Byrne. He kept his job until oversleeping the final round of the Scandinavian Masters two weeks later, leading to him being fired.
Lloyd Mangrum 1950 U.S. Open
In a playoff with Hogan and George Fazio in the 1950 U.S. Open at the Merion GC, Lloyd Mangrum incurred a twostroke penalty on the 16th hole when he marked his ball and blew on it to blow a gnat away. Although the Tour allowed players to lift and clean a ball, USGA rules prohibited it. After Mangrum holed his six-foot putt for what he thought was par, an official told him he had made six. Hogan went on to win the playoff to complete his remarkable comeback from a car accident.
Mark Roe 2003 British Open Dustin Johnson looked to be headed for a three-man playoff with Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson. However, what he didn’t know was he had grounded his club in one of Whistling Straits’ innumerable bunkers before his approach shot to the final hole of regulation. Johnson had played from a sandy area outside of the ropes that had been walked through by fans. He was informed of the violation after finishing the hole and the two-stroke penalty ended his championship hopes.
Ian Woosnam 2001 British Open
In the final round of the 2001 British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, all signs pointed to Ian Woosnam capturing a 56
What should have been one of the best days of the journeyman pro’s career wound up being his worst. Roe fired a third-round 67 at Royal St. George’s that left him three shots off the lead, but he and playing-partner Jesper Parnevik were both disqualified after the round for failing to exchange scorecards before teeing off. The result was that they both signed for the wrong score, hence their dismissal from the tournament. The R & A has since changed the rule, but it didn’t change the result for Roe, who never contended at another major championship.

FERIA DE ALMERÍA Friday 18th August to Saturday 26th August 2017 This fiesta & fair in honour of the Virgen del Mar lasts around 8 days and has an extensive program of activities and concerts. La Virgen del Mar (Virgin of the Sea) is the patron saint of Almería, and her statue is borne on a carriage decorated with flowers to the hermitage dedicated to her. The most stirring moment of the procession is when she is taken from the lighthouse to the dock by boat. La Virgin del Mar traditionally take place on the Saturday before the last Sunday in August. The Fair of the Mediodía (day time fiestas): With a great atmosphere of beach bars brought to the centre of the city you can enjoy tapas, drinks and music. It welcomes all those who want to taste the exquisite cuisine of eastern Andalusia. At night most of the people are concentrated at the Fairground with all the rides, stalls and atmosphere that the fair has to offer. The fireworks usually take place at Midnight on the two Saturdays of the fair and on the Wednesday down at the beach.
Pottery Fair: This starts on the Wednesday and lasts until the closing night. Potters from all over Spain, Morocco and Portugal usually gather there to show and sell their wares and anyone with a taste for the craft would not want to miss al that it has to offer.
Folk Festival: Highlighting the Iberian and Mediterranean peoples cultures, world-class groups gather during the week to represent their dances and customs to the Almerian population and all visitors to the Feria. Music can usually be found throughout the city day and night but keep an eye out for the official schedule which will give you all the acts and venues, including times so you will know where to be and when to catch a particular favourite. Be warned: the Fair of Almería still holds a great prestige with it’s bullfighting within Andalucia. Bull runs & bull fights are commonplace, especially with picadors (a person on horseback who goads the bull with a lance) but this can be easily avoided by not going to the Bullring (Plaza de Toros). In General, It is a unique opportunity to visit the city of Almeria and taste the gastronomy of the area and experience the traditions with fun assured until dawn!

OMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COME If you like your stand-up comedy, here are a few to watch out for in 2017. These acts are on the up in the comedy clubs of the UK so keep a look out for them. Most have won many awards at various comedy festivals and competitions.
Toby Adams - Although he’s been doing stand up for quite some time, Toby has always put his job as a teacher first. But he is taking a sabbatical in 2017 to concentrate on his comedy career.
Andy Field - The 2015 student comedy award winner, Andy is inventive, laid back and quite different to other acts.
Tom Ward - “Brings fine jokes and star presence to his smart routines: he’s a star in the making” TimeOut Magazine.
Susie McCabe - Selling out at The Stand at Glasgow International Comedy Festival in 2016, she’s set to do the same this year.
Josh Pugh - People laugh at Josh before he’s even said anything. His writing is first class, personal to him yet infuriatingly simple.
Joby Mageean - Coming from the 2015 Great Yorkshire Fringe New Comedian Competition in York to win more contests in London, his ridiculous personal anecdotes and great original jokes are impressing all.
Rosco McClelland - A Connolly-esque fragmented story teller, he has matured massively into an act who enjoys taking chances and doesn’t let the few failures hinder his non stop progression towards stardom.
Alasdair Beckett-King - Not only does he have a stylish and original delivery but he has broad appeal across all demographics so expect big things.
Adam Riley - He has a very dark sense of humour, which is really clever and he always goes down very well on Saturday nights at the Monkey Business Comedy Club, North London.
Liam Withnail - His 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show was one of the best, most mature and considered shows to come from Scotland last year.
There are many more acts doing the circuits in the UK obviously but these are the stand out performers, recommended by the comedy clubs themselves.

Garrucha Fish Market
If you want to discover the best gastronomy of Levante Almeriense, Garrucha is the place to go. It has been a fishing village for thousands of years, and the fresh seafood and fish that you can find here is truly the crown jewel of the cuisine in this area of Almería. You cannot talk about the typical gastronomy of Garrucha without mentioning its fantastic red prawns, which are world famous and recognised by many prestigious chefs. This type of prawn is considered to be one of the most delicious shellfish in the Mediterranean. It exists in small numbers & Its breeding and fishing area is very limited. It is known as the “Garrucha prawn” because the limited fishing area is precisely just off the coast of Garrucha. Because of its limited number, as well as its delicious taste, the red prawn can get quite expensive in the market.
The “show” that is selling fish in the local fish market or “Lonja” A place that has become a real tourist attraction is the Garrucha fish market and its auction. It is a real experience to see the boats coming in loaded with fresh fish and seafood at dusk, and to see the auction. The boxes of prawns are placed in a line on flooded ground, surrounded by huge ice blocks. The buyers come quietly and very seriously, and there is an atmosphere of great expectation. They sit on concrete blocks opposite groupers, red scorpion fish, snappers, John Dory and, especially, the red prawns, which everyone is excited about. The sale of this fresh fish is a great experience and also a good chance to take home delicious and affordable seafood that has just come out of the sea. If you’re visiting or simply have never seen it, you have to experience it for yourself.

incredible military retreats
Though it may seem cowardly to some, the best military course of action is often to withdraw to fight another day. However, not all retreats are successful. But when they are, they can be nearly as beneficial as winning the battle outright. • Tactical Withdrawal - Is the most desirable form of retreating. It is planned to improve upon current battle conditions; or to gain a tactical advantage. Most commonly used to “buy time” for reinforcements to arrive, lure the enemy into a ambush (Feint), or to relocate the battle to advantageous terrain. • Disengagement - disengagement involves retreating forces back, while maintaining contact with the enemy. • Breakout - The breakout is an emergency retreat to avoid or escape from an enemy encirclement. • Rout - A rout is a chaotic and disorderly retreat of forces from the battlefield, which usually occurs when troops are asked to do too much, are outnumbered, or have been flanked and/or encircled. When a regiment routs, it is as likely to run deeper into trouble; than it is toward safety.
Napoleon’s Retreat From Moscow: Russian Campaign
Determined to convince Tsar Alexander I to stop sending aid to the United Kingdom for the war effort against France, Napoleon invaded Russia. After he and his Grande Armee finally arrived in Moscow on September 14th, 1812, he was disheartened to see that the Russian military, as well as the civilian population, had fled the city leaving no provisions or supplies behind. After only a month of waiting for a surrender, Napoleon decided to retreat, leaving the city and hoping to escape the harsh Russian winter. 500,000 soldiers went into Russia, only 100,000 avoided starvation, Cossacks and wolves. The Allied Evacuation Of Gallipoli: World War I The World War I Gallipoli Campaign was a land-based invasion. However, the Allied forces sustained heavy losses, barely making it more than a few miles inland. Eventually, after being bogged down just as they were on the Western Front, evacuation orders were drawn up, more or less the only thing that went right for the Allied troops. One reason they were able to escape relatively unscathed was the work of an Australian, William Scurry, who rigged up a self-firing rifle contraption which convinced the Turkish fighters that they were still being shot at by soldiers after everyone had already begun to leave. Highway Of Death: Gulf War I Iraq’s ultimatum was to withdraw its forces by January 15th, 1991 but they refused. Shortly afterward, Operation Desert Storm began. Thoughts of retreat began to enter the minds of many Iraqi soldiers and the main highway out of Kuwait City was their most likely escape route. On the morning of February 26th, more than 1,500 Iraqi vehicles began their trek out of Kuwait. Unfortunately for the Iraqis, they were “basically just sitting ducks” and a cavalcade of bombs tore through the ranks. Though the retreat may seem to have been unsuccessful, as many as 80,000 troops were withdrawn safely. George Washington’s Escape From New York: American Revolutionary War. In 1776, the Battle of Long Island saw George Washington face off against William Howe. Washington had surmised that the capture of New York would be one of Britain’s goals, and his soldiers were moved to Lower Manhattan. Stationed nearby, Howe’s soldiers marched on the Americans over land, however, he paused after the first few days of fighting, which gave Washington time to retreat his men. In the end, 10,000 Americans took part in the fighting, with 8,000 of them escaping. Enabling Washington to snatch a stalemate from the jaws of defeat. 66

Russian Retreats Against Napoleon: Russian Campaign Russia’s leaders were no fools and were expecting Napoleon & his Grande Armee. They knew that the best plan was one used by Wellington: systematic retreat, which would draw the French into a slow, drawn-out campaign. Napoleon’s fighting forces often lived off the land to supplement their supply trains. So the Russians instituted a scorched-earth policy, denying their enemies anything of use. However, it also did irreparable harm to Russian citizens who were still living in the area as well as the retreating French.
The Great Retreat: World War I In 1914, the Battle of Mons saw the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) come to the aid of the French Fifth Army as the Germans attempted to outflank them. As enemy artillery began to pound their line, the British rifle fire was so quick and accurate that the advancing Germans were certain they were facing lines of machine guns. While the “Old Contemptibles” managed to hold their own, the French Fifth Army did not fare so well, leading their commander to order a retreat. The British had no choice but to follow suit so they began what has come to be known as the Great Retreat. Mao Tse–Tung’s Long March: Chinese Civil War The Red Army of the Communist Party of China was on its last leg, hounded into extinction by the Kuomintang Army, a rival force fighting for control of the country. On October 16th, 1934, the Red Army decided to retreat the 86,000 troops but not unnoticed. Heavy fighting whittled down the Red Army to half its original size and by the time they reached safety a year later, only 8,000 troops remained. Though the retreat can’t be seen as a military success, the 6,400 km journey became a legend among the youth of China, inspiring many to join the Communists over the next decade. Battle Of Chosin Reservoir: Korean War In 1950, the Chinese 9th Army began an attack on UN troops stationed in North Korea.150,000 Chinese troops attempted to encircle the 30,000 UN troops but they failed, allowing the UN forces to escape to the south. For over two weeks, the retreat continued but as the UN troops reached the safety of South Korea, nearly 18,000 were dead, wounded, or missing. However, the Chinese lost twice that, forcing them to delay any more attacks, perhaps saving South Korea from capture. General Oliver P. Smith said: “Retreat, hell! We’re not retreating, we’re just advancing in a different direction.”
Battle Of Dunkirk: World War II In May 1940, the German blitzkrieg tore through Continental Europe like a plague towards France. Seemingly on the verge of taking the city of Dunkirk, the last port which could be used to evacuate the more than 300,000 Allied troops, the Nazi’s were ordered to halt. Hermann Goering, leader of the Luftwaffe, assured Hitler that his aircraft could finish the job. The short delay allowed the Allied retreat to fortify their defences enough to allow nearly everyone to escape by sea. The March Of The Ten Thousand: Battle Of Cunaxa A group of Greek mercenaries went to war in Persia and their leader, Cyrus, was slain in battle, stranding them in enemy territory with no one to guide them out. More than 2,700 km from the Black Sea, they were asked to surrender & refused. Pursued by the Persians, local tribes and the elements they only stopped briefly in a town named Gymnias only five days from the sea. 5 days later, cries from the men at the front of the line, and fearing an attack, many rushed to the front, only to realize what the men were screaming: “The Sea, The Sea.” 67
