The fall and rise of Alcopops If you grew up in the nineties you will probably recall numerous lost days and horrific hangovers from nights out drinking Alcopops. These fizzy, sugary drinks, packed with additives and e-numbers were all the rage but went out of favour at the turn of the century. Some old favourites included Hooch, with its garish label and popular orange or lemon flavours. For a taste of the Caribbean, Taboo was a fusion of tropical flavours blended with vodka and gave you the feeling of being on holiday without stepping foot in an airport. Archers was a mix of peach schnapps and lemonade, and served chilled was extremely quaffable and refreshing. In an attempt to appear sophisticated and drink from the glass rather than the bottle, young ladies would often opt for Lambrini, which could loosely be described as the Prosecco of the nineties. The more hard-core teenager would be found knocking back White Lightning or Diamond White, both equally high in alcohol and pretty lethal. Alcopops gained a reputation as the cause of teenage binge drinking and in the mid-nineties were withdrawn from the shelves of some supermarkets. Seen as a cheap and easy way to get drunk, surveys found that children as young as 11 were drinking up to five units per week. In 1996, chancellor, Kenneth Clarke, increased the tax on alcopops to 40 percent making them less affordable and

6

by Adele Land

so began the decline. Despite the drop in popularity, some alcopops survived and are making a comeback. Smirnoff Ice is seen as a refreshing alternative to a vodka tonic and the wondrous colours of WKD can still be seen gracing the shelves of many bars and pubs. With the rise in popularity of craft beers and ciders, producers are looking for new ways to attract new drinkers by adding flavours. Desperados is a beer with a hint of tequila and now also available in mojito flavour, very refreshing and extremely popular in European beach resorts. Drinkers of Crabbies Ginger Beer and Mike’s Hard Lemonade are a popular sight in English beer gardens while Kopparberg and Thistly Cross offer ciders in a range of fruit flavours including elderflower, strawberry and pear. The resurgence in popularity of alcopops has brought with it new concerns, most of the drinks are very high in sugar with the amount of calories in a small bottle equal to that in a full fat hot chocolate with whipped cream. Although the teenagers of today are tending toward beer and hard liquors, alcopops have regained their following with the more mature crowd reliving their youth and it looks like these once maligned tipples are back with a bang!

Blade Runner 2049 is an upcoming American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is the sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner and stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, who reprises his role as Rick Deckard, with Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Lennie James, Carla Juri, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto in supporting roles. The film will be released globally October 6, 2017, in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. Synopsis: Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Filming: Principal photography began in July 2016 and much was filmed in Budapest, Hungary. On August 25, 2016, a construction worker was killed while dismantling one of the film’s sets at Origo Studios. Warner Bros. revealed in early October 2016 that the film would be titled Blade Runner 2049. Shooting ended in November 2016 in Hungary. Music: Vangelis famously penned the score for the original but Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who has previously worked with Villeneuve on Prisoners, Sicario and Arrival, will be composing the score to this sequel. According to Jóhannsson, the decision was made a long time ago. He praised composer Vangelis for his previous work, and that it will be “an enormous challenge of mythical proportion”.

N332

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.

N332 is an informational portal written by ex Guardia Civil to give important information on Spanish Roads and educate ex pats and visitors on safety on driving in Spain. As well as other information regarding living and visiting Spain.

SMILE, YOU’RE on camera! Dashcams are a great tool for providing evidence in case of accidents but are you allowed to install them in your vehicle here in Spain? If you install a tiny camera on the inside of your windscreen and record constantly with no help from the driver, and the camera does not obscure your vision when driving, it is LEGAL. The video can be used as evidence for accidents/incidents in a trial, and it would be very helpful if all cars would have one, then we could see the accident from different points of view and see who was the responsible easily. Nowadays there are many devices to film in public places, you have to take care what you do with the video you are recording. If you decided to publish on internet you could

have problems if any of the persons who you have filmed, do not want to be published on a website. For example Google Maps, which have taken photos everywhere but can not show people faces, having to blur them out. There used to be debate also about filming police or Guardia doing their duty and a recent court ruling in Madrid has ensured that citizens can film the police during their public actions and that they lose their guarantees as an agent of authority if they overstep their duties, basically protecting the public from bad policing or unfair or unlawful behaviour by the police.

You can find more info and additional stories by visiting their website wwwN332.es or liking their page on Facebook/N332. They also have a new magazine “N332 Road watch” available for download as PDF for just 2 euros. 10

Things to do... Places to see.

Carboneras

Just a short drive from Mojácar and the gateway to the Cabo de Gata, Carboneras has a lot to offer.

The Almerían town of Carboneras is a perfect tourist destination for nature lovers as it has a unique and spectacular environment. You can simply enjoy the spectacular views or practice open-air sports such as hiking or scuba diving. It is set within the Nature Reserve of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, one of the most arid protected areas in Europe and the only with a coast in the whole of Andalucía. Carboneras is also chosen by those who simply want to enjoy a day of sun and beach. Among the many beaches is that of ´Los Muertos´, which is inside the fore mentioned natural park. You will find it hidden between mountains, with an extraordinarily straight shoreline. It´s not easy to get to and maybe due to this, it is frequently attended by nudists.

HISTORY

The name Carboneras, actually translates to coal bunkers, as the whole area was stripped of its forest when mining for coal (both of which are now very absent!). Its antique structure, formed by white houses that face the sea, started in the 16th Century surrounding the Castle of San Andrés, the most important monument in Carboneras and which allowed it to become part of the Ruta de Castillos through Andalusian land.

A few metres from this historical building one finds another which attracts attention in the group of country houses: the House of the Springs (Casa de los Fuentes), an ancient stately palace from the 19th Century that now gives home to the Town Hall. And in this same area, the so-called Andalusian Patio, a leisure park located by the banks of the Paseo Marítimo, with beautiful gardens and a stately home also from the 19th Century which is known as the Terracotta House (Casa de las Tejas). Other buildings of interest are the Torre del Rayo (tower of lightning), the oldest construction in Carboneras that was put up during the Nazrid dynasty as part of a lina of defense along the coast; The Castillo de Mesas Roldán, from the 18th Century and situated between the Punta de los Muertos and the Media Naranja; and the so-called Casa de Laberinto (House of the Labyrinth), situated in front of the Las Martinicas beach. Built by the Belgian architect André Bloc in 1964. It presents an original architecture, whose disposition has given him the nickname of “Labyrinth”. All rooms are round, hence their exterior appearance. Bloc raised this house with

Castle of San Andrés

Casa Bloc or Casa Labyrinth the intention of using it as his place of residence from the moment he retired, but unfortunately he died before he could move, so the house was abandoned. Today is an icon of the locality. 12

Scuba Diving in Carboneras: BEACHES

Among the different beaches that define the 17 kilometres of coast in Carboneras, the beach of Los Algarrobicos stands out as it was the setting for the famous film of Lawrence of Arabia. The beach of Los Barquicos is very popular among those who practice scuba diving and that of el Lancón, which, like the previous one, is well-equipped with all the services and facilities necessary to meet the needs of even the most demanding of tourists. From its natural maritime environment comes the Island of San Andrés, declared a Natural Monument and Marine Reserve of Fish.

GASTRONOMY

Those who wish to try the exquisite delicacies of the local gastronomy will have no hesitation in trying the rabbit cooked in garlic, smoked tuna and numerous other seafood dishes such as ´galán´.

Wether you are an experienced diver or a novice, there are several dive schools that are based in the town, plus others that use Carboneras as one of their dive locations because of the small island just 800m off the shore called “Isla de San Andres”, and it’s proximity with nearby sites in the Cabo de Gata. Range from 12m - 30m depths and incorporating many fascinating features and wildlife for all levels, these dives are fantastic. If you would like to get involved you can contact these Dive centres that are based in Carboneras: Branquias Dive Centre info@branquias.com T. 950 45 44 71 Buceo Carboneras Dive Centre info@buceocarboneras.com T. 950 130 650

CELEBRATIONS

The Fiesta de San Antonio in June is a must, with the traditional recreation of the battle of the Moors and Christians on the beach. There is also the Fiesta de los Pescadores (Fishermans festival) halfway through August, with the marine procession and the ´sardiná´ in the fishing port.

INDUSTRY

Dominating a fair portion of the skyline to the south of the town is the large industrial area housing a cement factory and desalination plant along with it’s own service port capable of handling some pretty big cargo ships. The desalination plant takes sea water, and through reverse osmosis, is able to obtain water for use in irrigation. At the time of its construction, it was the largest sea water desalination plant constructed in Europe and one of the largest in the world! 13

QI RANDOM SCIENCE FACTS 1. Fingernails grow around three to four times faster than toenails. Scientists don’t know what biological mechanism is behind the different growth rates. But, they do have theories based on more than 100 years of finger and toenail observations 2. Right handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people...was an often used quote but it really has no substance and is not true. It was as a result of poor research in a time when there were generally fewer (and importantly, younger) left handed people and many were forcibly made to be right handed. 3. If you rub an onion or garlic on your foot – within 30 – 60 minutes you will be able to taste it. This is because the purifying and pungent chemicals in raw onion and garlic (Allicin) gets into your bloodstream transdermally *through the skin) and circulates the body quickly. This has led to a new craze, albeit stemming from Chinese medicine, of going to bed with onions in your socks to detox and aid in the fight against flu & colds. 4. You can’t kill yourself by holding your breath. This is because if you hold it until you go unconscious, your body involuntarily (a deep inbuilt reflex in all vertebrates) begins to breath again as soon as you do avoiding suffocation. However, DO NOT TRY THIS!!! Other complications can cause death as a result of hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the blood) and whilst hypoxic, you are at risk from cardiac arrhythmias or seizures or you could even hit your head or break your neck as you pass out and fall to the ground! 5. On one square inch of human skin there are 50 million microscopic creatures. The skin supports its own ecosystems of micro-organisms, including yeasts and bacteria, which cannot be removed by any amount of cleaning. Estimates place the number of individual bacteria on the surface of one square inch (6.5 square cm) of human skin at 50 million, though this figure varies greatly over the average 20 square feet (1.9 m2) of human skin 6. Armadillos are the only creatures apart from humans that can be infected with leprosy. There are known cases of armadillo to human transfers of the disease. Some armadillos are naturally infected with leprosy, and armadillos are the only other animal besides humans to host the leprosy bacillus, according to Smithsonian Magazine. 16

7. A snail can sleep for 3 – 4 years – during which period it does not need food. The reason snails sleep is they alike many other animals hibernate. Hibernation means that they sleep when weather becomes excessively cold, this is a necessity in survival. Snails will bury themselves in the ground and close their shells off with their own slime 8. Giraffes can live longer without water than camels. The high water content in the leaves of the Acacia and the fruit they eat make it so they don’t need to drink water much at all as long as they’re eating enough. Regardless, they can go weeks without drinking water, longer than even camels but when they do drink water, giraffes can guzzle about 12 gallons at one time. 9. The songs of humpback whales can change dramatically from year to year. There are eleven populations of humpbacks around the world, each covering their own ocean-sized territory and boasting not only their own dialect of song, but also their own anthem with  each whale singing the same sequence of the same sounds. But week-to-week, month-to-month, and year-to-year this song evolves, as the whales collectively create new phrases and patterns, totally in sync. 10. To test if a pearl is real, you can rub vinegar on it. When pearls are exposed to white vinegar, the acetic acid reacts with the calcium carbonate in the pearl, releasing carbon dioxide and causing it to bubble and fizz, eventually dissolving the pearl but be sure to clean it off quick! 11. Goldfish kept in a dark room turn much paler. If it wasn’t for the colour in the food they eat, they would almost all of their colour, although would die way before because of not eating! 12. A Queen bee’s stinger is not barbed and can be used repeatedly without harming her. When a virgin queen emerges from her brood cell, she’ll immediately seek out other virgin queens and try to kill them by stinging them. 14. Quicksand doesn’t directly kill humans as it is usually not very deep at all. It is the fact that it can be incredibly difficult to remove yourself from quicksand that causes death by the environment – such as exposure or drowning as tides rise.

Blue Dog. By Louis de Bernières In this charming prequel to the much-loved Red Dog, Louis de Bernières tells the moving story of a young boy and his Granpa, and the charismatic and entertaining dog who so many readers hold close to their hearts. When a family tragedy means Mick is sent to the outback to live with his Granpa, it looks as if he has a lonely life ahead of him. The cattle station is a tough place for a child, where nature is brutal and the men must work hard in the heat and dust. However, after a cyclone hits, things change for Mick. Exploring the floodwaters, he finds a lost puppy covered in mud and half-drowned. Mick and his dog immediately become inseparable as they take on the adventures offered by their unusual home, and the business of growing up, together.

Pool fitness! Working out is more fun when you’re splashing around in your gym or community pool or even the sea. Aquatic exercises can burn fat and they’re healing, too, easing symptoms for arthritis and fibromyalgia sufferers. Dive into a new workout regimen with these moves that’ll get or keep you fit... These articles are to be used as a guide or reference only. Ultimate Magazine has gathered this information from internet sources and therefore can not be held responsible for any misdiagnosis of symptoms or medical complications from a change of diet or injury from exercise. Water is one of the best fitness tools there is. Here are some of the ways aquatic workouts help: • Water provides resistance, which strengthens muscles and boosts cardio intensity. • Water supports some of your weight, making workouts easier on joints and reducing the chances for an injury, especially if you’re overweight and out-of-shape. “Working out in water is very safe because no joints or bones are forced to bear too heavy a load,” says Andrew Jones, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in Chapel Hill, N.C. • You may heal faster; doctors often recommend aquatic exercises for people with joint injuries or infections, or who’ve had surgery, as a way to stay fit and shorten recovery time. • You could get relief from symptoms of chronic conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia and arthritis. Pool Exercise 1: Spiderman. Climb the pool wall like Spiderman climbs buildings! This exercise helps you defy gravity in a way that just isn’t possible on land. It also provides a unique challenge to your core and back muscles. How to do it: Stand in water at the side of the pool. Stabilize your upper body by sweeping your hands back and forth as you run your legs up the side of the pool and back down to the pool floor. Pool Exercise 2: Pool Plank. Planks are a proven corestrengthener on land. But if you don’t have a strong upper body it’s hard to hold it long enough to give abdominal muscles a good workout. All that changes in a pool. How to do it: Stand on the pool floor. Hold a “noodle” vertically in both hands. Press it straight down into the water and lean forward until your body is on an even incline. (Your head stays out of the water.) Try to keep yourself stable for 1 to 2 minutes. Pool Exercise 3: Chaos Cardio. This exercise takes jogging to a new level. By creating several currents in the pool and then running through them, you’ll strengthen all your core stabilizing muscles. How to do it: Run in a zigzag pattern from one end of the pool to the other, then run straight through all the currents you’ve just created. Do 3-minute intervals, alternating with something less cardio-intensive, such as Pool Plank or One-Legged Balance (below). Pool Exercise 4: One-Legged Balance. This strengthens your leg and core muscles, the ones responsible for balance, without the risk of falling and hurting yourself as your core has to kick in to keep you upright, increasing your static balance. How to do it: Standing in waist-high water, lift your left knee up and place the middle of a noodle under your left foot. (Its sides will float up into a U-shape.) Keep your hands by your side and balance with your left foot on the noodle for one minute. Then move your left knee out to the side and balance for another minute. Switch legs and repeat with the right knee lifted and the right foot resting on the noodle. For an extra challenge, lift both arms up over your head as you balance. If you’re in the pool with your kids, have them jog in circles around you to create currents that will further challenge your balance. Pool Exercise 5: Fly-Backs. In the water, as on land, fly-backs work the muscles in the upper chest, back and arms. They also improve posture. How to do it: Start in a lunge position with your right knee bent and your left leg extended straight behind you in the pool. Reach your arms straight out in front of you at chest height — palms touching, fingers extended and thumbs up. Open your arms straight out to the sides in the water, then return them to the starting position to complete one rep.

• A pool workout gives you “better balance, agility and endurance, which is a great confidence boost for anyone who has shied away from exercise in the past,” says clinical exercise physiologist Mary Sanders, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno. • Pool exercises are great fat-burners. You can burn a higher level of calories in a shorter time in the pool.

To get the most of your water workout, follow these tips: • Don’t go in deeper than waist-high. That way your feet will have good contact with the pool floor and your leg muscles will be able to support some of your weight. • Wear water shoes to improve traction and webbed gloves (usually made of Neoprene with webbing between the fingers) to add resistance and intensity to arm movements.

Pool Exercise 6: Cardio/Resistance Combo. Strengthen your upper chest, back, arms and core with this challenging drill. It also raises your heart rate and burns more calories. How to do it: Straddle a noodle as if you were sitting on a horse. Pedal around the pool as fast as you can while doing the arm portion of Fly-Backs (see above), opening and closing your arms. Sit up tall with your spine vertical — no leaning. This will force your core muscles to keep you stable. Continue for 3 minutes. Pool Exercise 7: Core Ball Static Challenge. This deceptively simple exercise strengthens your core as you work to keep yourself upright. By changing the position of your arms and legs, it becomes four exercises in one. How to do it: Version A: Stand in a lunge with your right leg bent and your left leg extended behind you. Hold an inflated ball about 6 inches in diameter (like those found in a pharmacy or toy store) with both hands directly in front of your navel. Keep your shoulders down and back. Hold this position for 30 seconds, engaging your core to keep you upright. Switch legs and hold for another 30 seconds. Version B: Do the entire exercise in version A, this time holding the ball with your arms outstretched, so the ball is just under the surface of the water for an added core challenge. Version C: Balance on the right leg with your left knee lifted. Hold the ball in front of your navel as in version A for 30 seconds. Repeat while standing on the left leg with the right knee lifted. Version D: Balance again on your right foot, left knee lifted. Hold the ball with arms outstretched as in version B, holding for 30 seconds. Repeat while standing on the left leg with the right knee lifted. Pool Exercise 8: Cardio Core Ball Running. This exercise combines cardio with core-strengthening. The ball adds extra resistance and pulls you off-center so your core muscles have to engage to keep you moving forward. Changing the position of the ball works your core even harder. How to do it: Version A: Hold the ball with both hands directly in front of your navel. Run across the pool as fast as you can for one minute. Rest for 30 seconds, then repeat 3 more times, increasing speed through each rep. Version B: Tuck the ball under your right arm at waist height. With your shoulders facing forward (don’t twist toward the ball), run across the pool as fast as you can for 1 minute. Move the ball to your left side and run for another minute. Repeat 4 times, running faster each time.

03 Inset: Portrait by Brian Smith. Main picture: Alfred Weidinger portrait of Elliott in the Westlicht Museum of Photography, Vienna

PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE by Dean Baker

Elliott Erwitt

Elliott Erwitt is an American advertising and documentary photographer known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings— a master of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive moment” of which I spoke about a few editions ago. He was born in Paris and soon moved to Italy and then to the United States where he went on to study photography and filmmaking at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research, finishing his education in 1950. During a brief stint as a photographer’s assistant in the army. Erwitt was then hired to work on a photography project for the Standard Oil Company and from there, began a freelance photographer career and produced work for Collier’s, Look, Life and Holiday. He was invited to become a member of Magnum Photos by the founder Robert Capa and went on to be the president later on. “It’s about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It’s simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what’s around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy” Erwitt’s philosophy to taking pictures, in my opinion, is one of the best to have. Simply having a few criteria and forcing yourself to change the way you see an image or a possible shot leads to some fantastic photographs.

26

His style and thinking of not planning too much, having a good wander about and not just taking photos of people will lead to very interesting images and has done for me in the past. Keeping things playful and fun, not dwelling on the serious or thought provoking also shows in his images, often making me smile too. Many photographers also take form over content too seriously but Elliott does not. Whilst many often over think the composition, it’s worth concentrating on what is happening in the frame too. Although this may seem obvious, I’ve found myself losing sight of this and as a result, I have pleasing images but they have no content or fail to evoke any kind of emotion so it’s also important, as Elliott would agree, to hone your observational skills too.

QUICK TIP: Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4. Grease a 20cm diameter springform cake tin.

Ingredients • unsalted butter 50g, melted, plus extra for greasing • digestive biscuits crushed 100g • white chocolate chopped 125g • single cream 125ml • cream cheese, softened 225g • mascarpone cheese 225g • golden caster sugar 4 tbsp • vanilla extract 2 tsp • eggs 3, separated • passion fruit pulp, sieved to remove pips 125ml • passion fruit and berries to decorate

method Put the crushed biscuits and melted butter into a bowl and mix well. Tip the mixture into the prepared tin and press down with the back of a spoon. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, or until golden. Leave to cool. Reduce the oven temperature to 150C/gas mark 2.

Serving suggestion

Put the chocolate into a heatproof bowl. Put the cream into a small saucepan and heat, then pour on to the chocolate and stir until smooth. Put to one side. In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and mascarpone together until smooth. Add the sugar, vanilla and egg yolks. Stir in the white chocolate mixture and passion fruit pulp. In a large, clean, dry bowl, whisk the egg whites to soft peaks. Fold a large spoonful of the egg whites into the batter very vigorously, then gently fold in the remaining whites until smooth. Spoon the mixture on the cooled base & bake for 50–60 mins, or until set but with a slight wobble in the centre. Turn off the oven & leave to cool inside for 2 hours, with the door ajar. Chill in the refrigerator overnight. Remove from the tin & decorate with fresh passion fruit & berries. 46

ION DESTINAT .. REPORT.

DUBAI Dune Bashing

Dubai is a destination like no other. One of the fastest growing places in the world, this former gulf trading post offers a unique vacation experience for travellers of all ages and should be on everyone’s travel bucket-list. Located in the Arabian gulf, Dubai forms part of the United Arab Emirates, a federal monarchy, made up of seven Emirates, each governed by its own monarch. The UAE has the seventh biggest oil reserve in the world and its wealth is hugely attributed to exports of oil and gas. In addition to this, Dubai has also established itself as an important hub for the aviation industry and tourism ranks highly as a major player in the economy. Once occupied by the British, English is widely spoken in Dubai although Arabic is the official national language. Islam is the official religion, although other religions are tolerated and accepted throughout the Emirates and the UAE is a huge melting pot of diverse nationalities and cultures with just 16 percent of its residents being Emirati citizens.

What to do there

Dubai has the reputation as a shopper’s paradise but aside from the glitzy malls and bustling souks this oasis in the desert offers many other attractions and activities. The magical, musical Dubai Fountains were designed by the same team behind the Bellagio fountain in Las Vegas. The best way to see the spectacle is by boat and a 30-minute trip costs from 17 euros per person. If you can’t afford to stay in the luxurious Burj al Arab hotel, you can still snap yourself a bunch of selfies by taking a trip to the 125th floor for around 32 euros. Thrill seekers will enjoy a Dune Safari with a ‘dune bashing’ trip in a 4x4 through the desert. The trip costs usually around

40 euros and includes a belly dancing display, camel ride and a Bedouin-style barbecue. Skiing in the Arabian Gulf - sounds impossible? Not in Dubai! Enjoy a two-hour session or full day at Ski Dubai, the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort. Clothing and equipment is included and prices start from 48 euros. Another great way to cool off is at Dubai Aquadventure. Think you’ve done waterparks before? Aquadventure is a waterpark like no other, with 500 metres of private beach and spectacular slides including one through shark-filled waters, this is a great day out for all ages. Prices from 62 euros. Not forgetting the shopaholics, Dubai has numerous shopping malls with designer boutiques. The Dubai Mall, with more than a thousand shops is one of the largest in the world and boasts an indoor ice rink, giant waterfall and hundreds of food outlets. For something different don’t miss a visit to Global village, a shopping extravaganza with stunt artists and shows throughout the day. Shop like a local and pick up a bargain at one of the numerous souks. Each souk has its own speciality where you can buy a mind blowing range of goods including fake designer clothes, sumptuous materials, electronics, diamonds

and gold. Leave plenty of time for a visit to the souks so you can find the best bargain and don’t forget to haggle.

Burj al Arab

Where to stay

Dubai is split into different areas, each with its own attraction for tourists. The Jumeira Beach area, south of the city is a vast stretch of white sand, lined with luxury hotels and beach clubs. Some parts of the beach are privately attached to the hotels but non-residents can enjoy Jumeira Beach Park where you can participate in beach sports, cook yourself a barbecue, eat at one of the cafes or kiosks and for a reasonable entrance fee can spend the whole day with great fun for all the family. Be aware at weekends it can get very busy. The ideally located Hawthorn hotel and suites has good reviews and a week will cost around 750 euros per room.

The Wyndham Dubai Marina has rooms starting at 510 euros for a week or you can rent a private penthouse for around 6,000 euros.

How to get there

Emirates has direct flights to Dubai (DXB) from Madrid with prices from 530 euros. For a budget option fly with Pegasus via Istanbul for as little as 350 euros.

Jumeira is also home to the Burj al Arab hotel, a 210-metretall, sail-shaped building built on a small island just off the coast. Listed as one of the top 12 most expensive hotels in the world, a standard room (complete with butler!) will set you back around 1,500 euros per night!

Need to know

The nearby Palm Jumeirah is an man-made archipelago, opened in 2009. Access to The Palm is by road or monorail and the views from both are spectacular. The luxury hotels on The Palm boast private beach access and for expats in the area, a home there is the ultimate status symbol.

Dubai is a Muslim country therefore the working week runs from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday the the official weekend.

The Atlantis Resort is the jewel in crown on the islands and has a marine-life education centre where one can interact with dolphins while learning about these wonderful creatures. The resort boasts an underwater restaurant among its 23 different eateries and has a waterpark and aquarium. A seven-night stay can cost around 2,500 euros. For something a little more – wallet-friendly, the Royal Club offers one-bedroom apartments for a much more palatable 750 euros per week. The Dubai Marina area is a cluster of high-rise buildings and home to fabulous shopping malls and designer boutiques. The imaginatively named, ‘Marina Walk’ and ‘The Walk’ are the liveliest areas in the city and home to a wide selection of bars, cafes and restaurants.

The best time to go is between October and April when the heat has subsided. In the summer the temperatures can reach the high 40s although everywhere has air conditioning and there’s always the beach or pool for cooling off.

Despite being a Muslim country, Dubai is fairly tolerant but women are advised to dress slightly more conservatively away from the pool and beaches, a light cardigan or longsleeved shirt to cover the shoulders is appropriate. The currency in Dubai is the Dirham, there are numerous exchange offices in hotels and shopping malls. Whether it’s beach, sports, shopping or relaxation, Dubai has something to offer every type of traveller.

THEGOLFPAGES By Tony Myles ...your regular insight into Spain’s best and most played golf courses, world tournaments and news.

Golfing World Records

There are dozens of golf world records out there just waiting to be broken. We take a look at some of the most impressive along with a few of the more bizarre… While it’s unlikely you’ll find yourself beating Jim Furyk’s record-breaking round of 58 at the Travelers Championship, there are hundreds of other ways to etch your name into the golfing history books. Here are a few of the more interesting… Fastest ever round (team) 13 Minutes 42 Seconds With the slow play debate still raging and no real solution in sight, we could learn a thing or two from Farnham Golf Club in Surrey. They currently hold the record for the fastest completed 18 holes at a staggering 13 minutes 42 seconds. Admittedly this did involve 80 members strategically placed around the course but it is still must have taken some doing. Perhaps a more realistic target is the record for the fastest ever fourball of 1 hour 4 mins 24 secs. Ben Crosby, Andrew Crawford, John Lyon and Russell Hayhoe sprinted their way into

the record books at Ponteland Golf Course, Northumberland, on 19 June 2005. Longest Putt – 125 yds Fergus Muir successfully sank a putt measuring 125yds on the Eden Course at St Andrews Links in 2001. The shot was made using hickory shafted putter directly from the tee on the 5th hole after the 66-year-old saw his two playing partners go through the green in a howling wind. As for the longest televised putt in history, that can be claimed by swimmer Michael Phelps who holed a 159ft put for eagle on the par-4 6th at Kingsbarns in the 2012 Dunhill Links. Longest Hole - 964 yds If you’ve ever stood on the tee of a particularly long par 5 wondering how you’re ever going to reach the green in three, spare a thought for the members of Satsuki GC in Sano, Japan. This is the home of the world’s longest hole, the par-7 7th, which measures 964yds. As for the longest course in the world, this can be found at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club in Lijiang, China. This par-72 monster measures 8,548yds with the

longest hole, the par-5 5th, coming in at 711-yards. Youngest player to make a hole-in-one While you’ll struggle to match many of the records listed here, I’m afraid the ship has definitely sailed on this one. Christian Carpenter managed a hole-in-one aged 4 years 195 days at the Mountain View Golf Club, Hickory, North Carolina, in 1999. Carpenter’s record-breaking continued aged 12 when he shot 54, the lowest 18-hole score on a short course for a male golfer. The round took place in 2007 at Henry River Golf Club, which measures 5,953yds and has a par of 70. He has since turned pro so watch this space… And the most bizarre record goes to… American Michael Furrh who created the world’s longest usable golf club at 8.56m (28ft 1in) long. He hit the ball a distance of 59 yards in order to prove its usability and in doing so raised money for breast cancer awareness.

LONGEST DRIVE COMP By Tony Myles

Long Drive competitions are quite the event and is exactly as it sounds, rather self-explanatory. Extremely strong golfers gather together to see who can hit golf balls farther than anyone else in the world.

upon at Augusta National, Tuesday night at the Mile High Showdown, they were all but encouraged. And no one had better celebrations on than eventual 2017 champion Maurice Allen.

Think of it as golf’s Home Run Derby, an event meant to show off the strength of its competitors and their very specific ability outside of the larger sport.

In the quarter-final round of the competition, Allen hit this absolute bomb of a shot, 483 yards.

Long Drive competitions are also similar to the Home Run Derby in that they give athletes an opportunity to let loose. Whereas over-the-top celebrations are somewhat frowned

Troy Mullins - Winner of Female Mile High Contest 52

Putting this in context, Rory Mclroy averaged 316 yards. a massive 167 yards shorter than this record and or for all you golfers, a good Par 3 short!

Tribute to

The Peoples Princess Princess Diana died in a tragic car crash 20 years ago on 31st August 1997 in Paris, France. Diana, Princess of Wales: Born: July 1, 1961, Sandringham, United Kingdom Died: Aug 31, 1997, Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, France. Buried: September 6, 1997, Althorp, United Kingdom. Siblings: Charles Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Jane Fellowes, Baroness Fellowes, John Spencer. Parents: Frances Shand Kydd, John Spencer. Diana, Princess of Wales was a member of the British royal family as the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, who is the eldest child and heir apparent of Queen Elizabeth II. Diana was born into the Spencer family, a family of British nobility with royal ancestry and was the fourth child and third daughter of John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, and Frances Roche. She grew up in Park House, situated on the Sandringham estate, and was educated in England and Switzerland. In 1975—after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer—she became known as Lady Diana Spencer. She came to prominence in February 1981 when her engagement to Prince Charles was announced to the world. Diana’s wedding to the Prince of Wales took place at St Paul’s Cathedral on 29 July 1981 and reached a global television audience of over 750 million people. During her marriage, Diana was Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, and Countess of Chester. The marriage produced two sons, the princes William and Harry, who were then respectively second and third in the line of succession to the British throne. As Princess of Wales, Diana undertook royal duties on behalf of the Queen and represented her at functions overseas. She was celebrated for her charity work and for her support of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. She was involved with dozens of charities including London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, of which she was president from 1989. Diana remained the object of worldwide media scrutiny during and after her marriage, which ended in divorce on

28 August 1996. Media attention and public mourning were extensive after her death in a car crash in a Paris tunnel on 31 August 1997 and subsequent televised funeral. On 31 August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris, France. Dodi Fayedand Henri Paul, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz S280, were pronounced dead at the scene; the bodyguard of Diana and Fayed, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor. Diana’s death caused a substantial outpouring of worldwide grief, including numerous floral tributes and her funeral on 6 September was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people. The Royal Family were criticised in the press for their reaction to the death, though they were simply following established protocol. Public interest in Diana has remained high, and she has retained regular press coverage. Although the media blamed the paparazzi following the car, an 18-month French judicial investigation found that the crash was caused by Paul, who lost control of the car at high speed while drunk. Paul was the deputy head of security at the Hôtel Ritz and had earlier goaded the paparazzi waiting outside the hotel.[1] His inebriation may have been exacerbated by anti-depressants and traces of a tranquillising anti-psychotic in his body. The investigation concluded that the photographers were not near the Mercedes when it crashed. An 18-month French judicial investigation concluded in 1999 that the crash was caused by Paul, who lost control at high speed while intoxicated. 55

Iconic photographs

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” - Aaron Siskind “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” - Elliott Erwitt “A tear contains an ocean. A photographer is aware of the tiny moments in a person’s life that reveal greater truths.” - Anonymous These 10 iconic images are in essence, what photography is all about, capturing meaningful stories and sometimes nothing more than just that. There may be many others that should have been suggested for inclusion or maybe some of these should be excluded but either way, there’s no doubting the power of a photograph and it’s lasting affect on the social development of mankind throughtout history.

Sharbat Gula (Afghan Girl) - Steve McCurry – 1984

Afghan Girl is a 1984 photographic portrait by journalist Steve McCurry which appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. The image is of an adolescent girl with green eyes in a red headscarf looking intensely at the camera. It has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa and has been called “the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa”. The image became “emblematic” of “refugee girl/woman located in some distant camp” deserving of the compassion of the Western viewer. In early 2002 the subject of the photo was identified as Sharbat Gula (born ca. 1972). Falling soldier - Robert Capa – 1936 The Falling Soldier (full title: Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano) is claimed to have been taken on Sept 5, 1936. It was said to depict the death of an Iberian Federation of Libertarian Youth (FIJL) soldier, during the Spanish Civil War. Following its publication, the photograph was acclaimed as one of the greatest ever taken, but since the 1970s, there have been significant doubts about its authenticity due to its location, the identity of its subject, and the discovery of staged photographs taken at the same time and place. Tank Man - Jeff Widener – 1989 Tank Man (also known as the Unknown Protester or Unknown Rebel) is the nickname of an unidentified man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force. More than 28 years after the incident, there is no reliable information about the identity or fate of the man; the story of what happened to the tank crew is also unknown. At least one witness has stated that “Tank Man” was not the only person who had opposed the tanks during the protest. Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper - Charles C. Ebbets – 1932 The photograph depicts eleven men eating lunch, seated on a girder with their feet dangling 840 feet (260m) above the New York City streets. The photograph was taken on September 20, 1932, on the 69th floor of the RCA Building during the last months of construction. According to archivists, the photograph was in fact prearranged. Although the photograph shows real ironworkers, it is believed that the moment was staged by Rockefeller Center to promote its new skyscraper. The photo appeared in the Sunday photo supplement of the New York Herald Tribune on October 2. 64

The Mahatma - By Margaret Bourke – 1946 When the British held Mohandas Gandhi prisoner in India, from 1932 to 1933, the nationalist leader made his own thread with a charkha, a portable spinning wheel. The practice evolved from a source of personal comfort during captivity into a touchstone of the campaign for independence, with Gandhi encouraging his countrymen to make their own cloth instead of buying British goods. Bourke-White’s picture soon became an indelible image, the slain civil- disobedience crusader with his most potent symbol, and helped solidify the perception of Gandhi outside the subcontinent as a saintly man of peace. Gen. Nguyen Ngoc Loan / Viet Cong Prisoner - Eddie Adams – 1968 Nguyen Van Lem, referred to as Captain Bay Lop or Ew Tu, was a member of the National Liberation Front, and was responsible for killing the wife and 6 children of a South Vietnamese military officer Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tuan. Lem was later captured and summarily executed in Saigon by General Nguyen Ngoc Loan during the Tet Offensive. The execution was captured on film by photojournalist Eddie Adams. The execution was explained at the time as being the consequence of Lem’s admitted guerrilla activity and war crimes, and otherwise due to a general “wartime mentality”. Migrant Mother - Dorothea Lange – 1936 In March 1936, after picking beets in the Imperial Valley, Florence and her family were traveling towards Watsonville when they broke down just inside a pea-pickers’ camp on Nipomo Mesa and were shocked to find so many people camping there. Years later She told an interviewer that when she cooked food for her children that day, others appeared from the pea pickers’ camp asking for food. Her husband and two of her sons were in town to get the car repaired so she set up a temporary camp when photographer Dorothea Lange drove up took six images in the course of ten mins. Guerrillero Heroico “Heroic Guerrilla Fighter” - Alberto Korda – 1960 This iconic photograph of 31 year old Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara was captured on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion. By the end of the 1960s, the image, in conjunction with Guevara’s subsequent actions and eventual execution, helped solidify the charismatic and controversial leader as a cultural icon. Korda said at the time of the picture, he was drawn to Guevara’s expression, which showed “absolute implacability” as well as anger and pain. Years later, he would say that the photograph showed Che’s firm and stoic character. Einstein’s Birthday - Arthur Sasse – 1951 14/03/51: Arthur Sasse was amongst the pack of photographers hounding Albert Einstein as he left his 72nd birthday celebration but the only one to get this shot of him playfully sticking his tongue out. This crop (from a much wider image including others in the car) was chosen by Einstein himself to put on greetings cards to be sent to friends. It is arguably one of the best known press photographs of any 20th century personality, giving a public image of Einstein as the ‘nutty professor’ rather than the nobel prize-winning physicist who developed the theory of general relativity. V-J day in Times Square (The Kiss)- Alfred Eisenstaedt – 1945 This photograph portrays a U.S. Navy sailor grabbing and kissing a female stranger in a white dress, on Victory over Japan Day in New York City’s Times Square on August 14, 1945. The photograph was published a week later in Life magazine, among many photographs of celebrations around the United States that were presented in a twelve-page section titled “Victory Celebrations”. Kissing was a favourite pose encouraged by media photographers of service personnel during the war but Eisenstaedt was photographing a spontaneous event that occurred that day! 65
