WELCOME Welcome to the early Winter and Festive edition of The Ultimate Almeria Magazine. Rather than my usual ramblings on about the climate and new businesses I have decided to enlighten your reading with a beautiful Winter poem A Winter Day by Lucy Maud Montgomery The air is silent save where stirs A bugling breeze among the firs; The virgin world in white array Waits for the bridegroom kiss of day; All heaven blooms rarely in the east Where skies are silvery and fleeced, And o’er the orient hills made glad The morning comes in wonder clad; Oh, ‘tis a time most fit to see How beautiful the dawn can be!

Wide, sparkling fields snow-vestured lie Beneath a blue, unshadowed sky; A glistening splendor crowns the woods And bosky, whistling solitudes; In hemlock glen and reedy mere The tang of frost is sharp and clear; Life hath a jollity and zest, A poignancy made manifest; Laughter and courage have their way At noontide of a winter’s day.

Wine

with me

Some like it hot As the nights draw in and the temperatures start to drop, frozen cocktails and ice cold beer can seem less tempting on a night out. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an interesting tipple or two, here are some ideas for hot alcoholic drinks that will warm your very soul! Irish Coffee has always been a popular after-dinner drink and had its heyday in the 1970s, along with Bernie Inns and Black Forest Gateaux. Well this old favourite has made a return in a whole new range of flavours. For the traditionalist, brew some quality coffee, add a generous shot of Irish whiskey and gently pour single cream slowly over the back of a spoon to ensure it sits on the top. Change it up by using different liqueurs such as Drambuie, Baileys or brandy and pop a couple of coffee beans on top for a touch of flair. Mulled Wine is a popular seasonal favourite and easy to make in a hurry. Use a light fruity red wine add star anise, bourbon or brandy, orange peel and some sugar, heat gently in a pan and serve in mugs with a cinnamon stick for a heart-warming festive drink.

A more unusual hot tipple is the Apple Toddy. If you want to avoid baking your own apples, simple warm some quality apple juice, ideally the cloudy kind, add a good splash of cognac, sugar to taste and grated nutmeg to finish. The Lumumba is a pimped up version of a traditional hot chocolate. Warm some cocoa or drinking chocolate add a generous glug of brandy and if you like, top it with whipped cream and marshmallows, the winter drink that feels like a big hug! Whenever I had a cold as a child my Grandmother would make me a Hot Toddy, said to be a remedy for any ailment. Warmed Scotch whiskey with lemon juice and brown sugar, this so called germ-buster put me off any lemon-based drinks for life but some folk swear by it! These are just some ideas to keep away the chills this winter, why not use up those bottles of hastily bought, random liqueurs in the cupboard and invent your own!

What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever told. “Murder on the Orient Express” tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. Murder on the Orient Express is now an upcoming American mystery film directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film also stars Branagh as Hercule Poirot, with Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley in supporting roles. It is scheduled for worldwide release in November, 2017 by 20th Century Fox.

8

The film is the fourth adaptation of Christie’s novel, following a 1974 film, a 2001 TV film, and a 2010 episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The novel featured her signature detective, Hercule Poirot, investigating the murder of a passenger on an outbound train from Istanbul. Murder on the Orient Express was most recently adapted in 2001 for a made-fortelevision film starring Alfred Molina. However, arguably the most famous adaptation of the book remains Sidney Lumet’s 1974 film version, which starred Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Richard Widmark, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael York, Jacqueline Bisset and Anthony Perkins, with Albert Finney playing the role of Poirot.

N332

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.

N332 is an informational portal written by ex Guardia Civil to give important information on Spanish Roads and educate ex pats and visitors on safety on driving in Spain. As well as other information regarding living and visiting Spain.

DRIVING IN THE RAIN As we head into winter it is inevitable that we will experience more rain so the N332 have given some simple guidelines. Changes in the weather provides significant risk to road users, and so our driving must be adapted at all times. Rain is one of the biggest contributors to weather related incidents. In Spain, long, dry periods are often followed by significant rainfall. In the first rainfall after a dry spell, the roads are particularly hazardous, as water falls onto the dust and surface coating on the road, creating extremely poor adhesion in places. Also, drainage systems are not always able to cope with the immediacy of the downpour, and so roads become flooded, particularly in dips which are designed to control the flow of water.

When driving in wet weather, slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. This will mean that you should allow extra time for your journey, or be prepared to arrive late. It is far better to arrive late, than not at all. Movements should be slow and steady, not harsh, to ensure your tyres are able to maintain as much grip as possible, and if you think you or your vehicle are not prepared to drive in wet conditions, then don´t. Wipers & headlights will allow for better visibility, not only for you, but other road users too. Take care, take it easy and take it slow.

You can find more info and additional stories by visiting their website wwwN332.es or liking their page on Facebook/N332. They also have a new magazine “N332 Road watch” available for download as PDF for just 2 euros. 10

Things to do... Places to see.

Vélez Rubio & Vélez Blanco About 140km from the City of Almeria (less from the Mojácar area) lies the Los Vélez district and natural park. Beautiful all year round and experienceing all the seasons!

Vélez Rubio

The municipality of Vélez-Rubio is the capital of Los Vélez district, forming part of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park. It has been declared an official Place of Cultural Interest due to its historical heritage and is a very popular destination for tourists. The tourist office is located in the local museum on Calle Carrera del Carmen 29 and open from MondayFriday 10am-2pm & 5-8pm, tel 950 41 01 48. The entrance to the town

The modern health centre

The Iglesia de la Encarnación, which can be seen from any point in the village, is a must-see and is one of the buildings of particular historical and cultural interest that makes this place so special. It has been declared a National Historical Monument and was built in the 18th century on top of the remains of what was the San Pedro church. It is one of the best examples of baroque architecture in Almeria. It has an imposing carved facade which includes the arms of the Marquises of Villafranca y Vélez, who built it. Inside, the main altar has a superbly detailed, 20-metre-high carved wood ´retablo´. Other buildings of particular historical and artistic interest that merit a visit are: the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, built in 17th century; next to that, the old Hospital Real, a typical baroque style building and the seat of the Conservatorio Elemental de Música and of the district´s Archaeology Museum; the Palacio de las Catequistas, which dates back to 12

the 18th century and was refurbished as a church at the end of the 19th century; and the María Inmaculada Convent, from the 17th Century. Those who want to learn more about the history of VélezRubio should visit the Miguel Guirao Archaeological Museum, where you will see many remains found in the surrounding area and others from prehistoric times, as well as from the Roman and Arab eras. It also has to be pointed out that the roman road of Vía Augusta passes through here, the road which brings Cartagena and Cádiz together, and that this was the place of refuge for Boabdil after his retirement as King of Granada. 3 km north of the town are the UNESCO World Heritage listed pre-historic caves and paintings called Cueva de Los Letreros (Leters Cave) and La Cueva del Gabar, to the north of Vélez Blanco.

Vélez Blanco

Nestling at the foot of a rocky outcrop is the small whitewashed village of Vélez Blanco, 6km north of its neighbour, Velez Rubio. The municipality of Vélez-Blanco forms part of the Sierra MaríaLos Vélez Natural Park and the Ruta de los Castillos (route of castles) through Andalucia. It is as popular a destination for lovers of rural tourism and sports as it is for lovers of culture and history. The Almacen del Trigo information office has information on the town and the surrounding Natural Park. The Castillo-Palacio (Renaissance Castle) that crowns the centre of the town is the main attraction, one of the jewels of the Spanish Renaissance. Constructed on top of the old Arab castle in the 16th Century, under order from the first Marqués

Outside the centre of town there are various Arab watchtowers, as well as archaeological sites with cave paintings, many located in the Natural Park. Among them is the Cueva Ambrosio and the Cerro de las Canteras, from the Paleolithic and Neolithic times. There is a lot to do in the Natural Park. Lovers of hiking are able to choose between different signed routes, such as the Pinar de las Muellas, Sierra Larga or Solana del Maimón. However, the best way to know what´s on offer at the park is to get in touch with the Centro de Visitantes, Almacén del Trigo, which is on Marqués de Los Vélez avenue. 13

QI Fiesta Nacional de España SPANISH NATIONAL HOLIDAY OCTOBER 12th Christopher Columbus (c. 1450-51–May 20, 1506) was born Cristoforo Colombo in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. His name has been changed in other countries as well: in Spanish it is Cristóbal Colón, and in Swedish it is Kristoffer Kolumbus.[2] His father was a wool weaver who also owned a cheese stand. Columbus’ mother was Susanna Fontanarossa. He had three brothers: Bartolomeo, Giovanni Pellegrino, and Giacomo. He also had a sister, Bianchinetta. When he was only 19, in 1470, Columbus took his first long voyage on one of his employer’s ships to the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea. When Columbus was 14, he left school and his father’s wool workshop to apprentice himself to a merchant on a trading ship.[1] As a young man, Columbus was tall, well above the 5’7” that was average for men in the Middle Ages. Columbus spoke frequently about his desire to spread Christianity to heathen cultures, and it was a popular cause during the time. He operated a little map-making and book-selling shop with his brother Bartolomeo while he lived in Portugal.[2] During Columbus’ time, most people believed that the world was formed mainly of one giant landmass consisting of Europe, Asia, and Africa—mainly because these are the only continents mentioned in the Bible. These were surrounded by one enormous body of water they called the Ocean Sea.[1] Some scholars speculate that Columbus may have received secret information from a close friend about lands far west across the ocean. This sailor is sometimes called the “Unknown Pilot.” Present historians haven’t found any evidence of him except for what is written by some early Columbus biographers.[1] Columbus first landed near the coast of what is today known as Watling Island in the Bahamas. Although he thought he was near China, Japan, and India, he was actually more than 8,000 miles away.[2] Because of this he thought the people he met were Indians. Even though more than 500 years have passed since that voyage, the native people of the Americas are still often referred to incorectly as “Indians.”[1] Columbus was not the first European to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. Some 500 years earlier, Norse Viking Leif Eriksson is believed to have landed in present-day Newfoundland, around A.D. 1000. Some historians believe that Ireland’s Saint Bernard or other Celtic people crossed the Atlantic even before Eriksson.[4] Before Columbus was a famous admiral and governor of the New World, he was a pirate, or Privateer, who helped attack Moorish merchant trips.[2] Columbus was very religious and believed God had called him to make his voyages. Many of the names Columbus gave to the lands he discovered were religious names. Later in his life, for reasons unknown, he wore a plain Franciscan habit everywhere he went.[2] 16

Near the end of his life, Columbus wrote a book called Book of Privileges that listed all the promises the Spanish crown had made to him over the years and the ways the crown had not honoured these promises.[2] Later in his life, Columbus began to write a bizarre book titled Book of Prophecies. In this book, he insisted that all his voyages had been divine missions directed by God. He believed the world was coming to an end and that he, Columbus, was bringing it about.[2] Columbus is often referred to as the “Father of the New World.”[1] Before he died, Columbus began requesting a new sort of voyage: a Christian crusade to Jerusalem to rescue it from the Muslims.[2] On May 20, 1506, at the age of 55, Columbus died at the court in Valladolid, Spain. His death went mostly unnoticed. In fact, the official court registry did not even record his passing until 10 days later. However, in the years and decades after his death, much of his fame and glory were returned to him.[2] Columbus is considered one of the best “dead reckoning” sailors who ever walked the planet.[1]
Skeletal evidence suggests Columbus and his crew brought back syphilis to the Old World. As one of the first global diseases, it devastated Europe.[2] Columbus was a talented admiral, but he was also a slave trader. While he soon discovered that the new lands did not hold silver, pearls, and other treasures, they did hold people, whom Columbus viewed as valuable resources. He is believed to have instigated the slave trade.[2] When Columbus returned to Spain with natives, Queen Isabella believed they were her subjects and, therefore, could not be enslaved unless they refused to be converted. However, during the Colonial era, the Spaniards enslaved them all the time.[2] Until the day he died, Columbus did not believe he found a new world. He died believing he had found a new passage to India. To justify his position, he proposed that the Earth was actually shaped like a pear, which made him the laughingstock of Europe.[2]

COLUMBUS DAY Many countries in Europe and in the New World celebrate Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. In the United States, October 12 is called Columbus Day; in Latin America, it is Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race), in the Bahamas, it is Discovery Day; in Argentina, it is Dia del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity); and in Belize and Uruguay, it is Dia de las Americas (Day of the Americas).[1]

Columbus has been viewed as an intrepid explorer, a monster, and a slave trader who unleashed horrors and conquest upon unsuspecting natives. However, scholars note he had both admirable qualities and negative ones: he was brave but a very flawed human being.[1] Activists have sought to abolish Columbus Day since at least the 19th century because of its association with immigrants and with the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, some were afraid it was being used to expand Catholic influence.[1] Christopher Columbus introduced horses into the New World. They later spread to the mainland and became essential to the Plains Indians.[1] Columbus and his men destroyed the island’s natural, delicate ecosystem. His ships brought sugar cane, wheat, olives, oranges, lemons, pomegranates, dates, cucumbers, lettuce, melons, and grapes. These new species grew and spread, overwhelming the native plants that had lived on the continent for hundreds of thousands of years.[1] The Europeans and the native Tainos traded two things that would shape cultures for the remainder of history: tobacco and horses. Sailors brought back tobacco to Europe, and the first European nicotine addicts were soon created.[6] Columbus was intensely interested in gold, so he imposed a gold tribute system. Every Tainos adult would supply a certain quota of gold dust on a regular schedule. If they did, they were given a token to wear around their necks. If they did not, they had a hand chopped off.[1] The Taino population was completely extinct within 50 years of the Europeans’ first landfall. This was due to murder and desperate suicides, as well as a declining birth rate. However, disease was the most devastating factor in their demise. Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards unleashed a deadly cargo of dysentery, tuberculosis, and influenza. Settlers wrote home about the unbearable stench of rotting bodies that filled the air.[2] While the Santa Maria was the official flagship, Columbus frequently complained about its clumsiness and slowness. His favourite ship was the Nina, which was swifter and smaller.[2] The Pinta, the name of one of Columbus’ ships, is Spanish for “the painted one” or “prostitute.”[1] In 1500, a royal commissioner was dispatched to Hispaniola to arrest Christopher Columbus and his brothers. They were brought back to Spain in chains under accusations of mismanagement of the colony. Although Columbus was stripped of his governorship, King Ferdinand granted him his freedom and subsidized a fourth trip.[5] In 1504, Columbus was stuck in Jamaica with angry islanders who would not give him food. Knowing that a lunar eclipse was going to happen, Columbus told the islanders that his gods were angry for refusing him food. After the eclipse, the scared islanders gave Columbus plenty of food and begged for mercy.[5]

Christopher Columbus’ remains have been transported between the Old and New Worlds so many times that many historians believe that his remains are scattered in both worlds.[5] Columbus’ heirs were engaged in a legal battle with the Spanish monarchy until 1790 (nearly 300 years after his death). They argued that the monarchy did not give them the money or profits due the explorer.[5] The crew of the first of Columbus’ voyages consisted of 24 men for the Nina, 26 for the Pinta, and 40 for the Santa Maria. Most were common sailors, and no women were allowed. There was also a secretary and an interpreter who spoke Arabic so that they could communicate with Ghengis Kahn and his people when they reached the East. There were also barrel makers, caulkers, and carpenters to fix the ships, as well as a surgeon.[2] When King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella initially hesitated to fund Columbus’ exploration, a priest named Father Perez interceded and said that if Columbus succeeded, he would be able to convert heathen races to Christianity. In 1492, they finally give Columbus the funds and the ships.[6] The first sailor in Columbus’ crew to see land (on October 12, 1492) was named Rodrigo de Triana. It was a small island in the presentday Bahamas named San Salvador.[1] Three countries refused to fund Columbus’ voyage: Portugal, England, and France. They refused because they thought he was a crackpot. They told him the Earth was much larger than he had calculated. They were actually right.[1] One reason Columbus estimated the distance around the Earth shorter than other navigators is that he had read Arab maps. As he read the maps, he used a shorter distance for a mile than the Arab map makers had used, causing him to estimate the circumference as being one-fourth less than the actual number of miles. Additionally, Marco Polo’s book, which Columbus relied on, estimated China as much larger than it really was, which also shrank the distance from Europe to Asia.[1]

The Four Voyages. By Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus The Hero: Defending Columbus From Modern Day Revisionism. By Rafael

Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus: What Your History Books Got Wrong By James W. Loewen

No gamble in history has been more momentous than the landfall of Columbus’s ship the Santa Maria in the Americas in 1492 an event that paved the way for the conquest of a ‘New World’.

Once upon a time, Columbus was a hero... Sadly, that’s not the case today: Some people don’t even know who he was, or what he did; while others claim he was a villain, and are advocating for the abolition of Columbus Day and everything he represented. Accusations vary from Columbus being a racist, a rapist, a genocidal maniac, and even that he ran a child sex slave ring. The question is, are these allegations true? And, where are the scholars correcting Columbus’ record?

Some myths don’t die, and lies are still being told about Christopher Columbus: that he “discovered” the Americas, that the land was sparsely populated by native people (there were fourteen million inhabitants in 1492), that those people were primitive (Europeans learned a lot and gained technology and agricultural skill from Native Americans), and that they submitted to Columbus’s “Godlike” authority (they submitted to the deadly smallpox and bubonic plague that Columbus’s crew imported from Europe).

The accounts collected here provide a vivid narrative of his voyages throughout the Caribbean and finally to the mainland of Central America, although he still believed he had reached Asia. Columbus himself is revealed as a fascinating and contradictory figure, fluctuating from awed enthusiasm to paranoia and eccentric geographical speculation. Prey to petty quarrels with his officers, his pious desire to bring Christian civilization to ‘savages’ matched by his rapacity for gold, Columbus was nonetheless an explorer and seaman of staggering vision and achievement.

Unfortunately, some of the misinformation out there comes from “scholars;” and even those who defend Columbus, won’t address the actual story either. In this book, the reader will learn who modern history revisionists claim Columbus was, and what he did, vs. the actual historical accounts, coming from the mouths of those who knew him well, and wrote about them for us. The conclusion will be inevitable, that is, Columbus was a Hero, and his story and legacy need to be rediscovered again today.

this book disproves the myths about Columbus still enshrined in American textbooks with quotations from primary source material that sets the record straight. The book sums up the miss telling—and reveals the real story—in a graphically appealing and accessible format that shows the degree to which textbooks have “lied” by knowingly substituting crowdpleasing myths for grim and gruesome historical evidence.

Get walking! Walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. These articles are to be used as a guide or reference only. Ultimate Magazine has gathered this information from internet sources and therefore can not be held responsible for any misdiagnosis of symptoms or medical complications from a change of diet or injury from exercise. What’s not to like about walking?

It’s free. It’s easy to do, and it’s easy on the joints. And there’s no question that walking is good for you. Walking is an aerobic exercise; a University in the USA study found that women who walked had less body fat than those who didn’t walk. It also lowers the risk of blood clots, since the calf acts as a venous pump, contracting and pumping blood from the feet and legs back to the heart, reducing the load on the heart. Walking is good for you in other ways as well.

1. Walking improves circulation.

It also wards off heart disease, brings up the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and strengthens the heart. Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Tennessee found that post-menopausal women who walked just one to two miles a day lowered blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks. Women who walked 30 minutes a day reduced their risk of stroke by 20 percent – by 40 percent when they stepped up the pace, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

2. Walking shores up your bones.

It can stop the loss of bone mass for those with osteoporosis, according to Michael A. Schwartz, MD, of Plancher Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in New York. In fact, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, study of post-menopausal women found that 30 minutes of walking each day reduced their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent.

3. Walking leads to a longer life.

You don’t have to walk for hours. A brisk 10-minute daily walk has lots of health benefits and counts towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. 7. Walking improves sleep.

A study from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that women, ages 50 to 75, who took onehour morning walks, were more likely to relieve insomnia than women who didn’t walk.

8. Walking supports your joints.

The majority of joint cartilage has no direct blood supply. It gets its nutrition from synovial or joint fluid that circulates as we move. Impact that comes from movement or compression, such as walking, “squishes” the cartilage, bringing oxygen and nutrients into the area. If you don’t walk, joints are deprived of life-giving fluid, which can speed deterioration.

9. Walking improves your breath.

When walking, your breathing rate increases, causing oxygen to travel faster through bloodstream, helping to eliminate waste products and improve your energy level and the ability to heal.

Research out of the University of Michigan Medical School and the Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Healthcare System says those who exercise regularly in their fifties and sixties are 35 percent less likely to die over the next eight years than their non-walking counterparts. That number shoots up to 45 percent less likely for those who have underlying health conditions.

10. Walking slows mental decline.

4. Walking lightens mood.

11. Walking lowers Alzheimer’s risk.

A California State University, Long Beach, study showed that the more steps people took during the day, the better their moods were. Why? Walking releases natural painkilling endorphins to the body – one of the emotional benefits of exercise.

5. Walking can lead to weight loss.

A brisk 30-minute walk burns 200 calories. Over time, calories burned can lead to pounds dropped.

6. Walking strengthens muscles.

It tones your leg and abdominal muscles – and even arm muscles if you pump them as you walk. This increases your range of motion, shifting the pressure and weight from your joints and muscles – which are meant to handle weight – helping to lessen arthritis pain

A study of 6,000 women, ages 65 and older, performed by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that age-related memory decline was lower in those who walked more. The women walking 2.5 miles per day had a 17-percent decline in memory, as opposed to a 25-percent decline in women who walked less than a half-mile per week.

A study from the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter of a mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, compared to those who walked less.

12. Walking helps you do more, longer.

Aerobic walking and resistance exercise programs may reduce the incidence of disability in the activities of daily living of people who are older than 65 and have symptomatic OA, shows a study published in the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management.

04 “Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” Don McCullin

PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE Don McCullin

by Dean Baker

Sir Donald McCullin, CBE, Hon FRPS (born 9 October 1935), is a British photojournalist, particularly recognized for his war photography and images of urban strife. His career, which began in 1959, has specialised in examining the underside of society, and his photographs have depicted the unemployed, downtrodden and the impoverished. Artistic from an early age and after studying in art college, he was later drafted into the RAF, where he worked as a photographers assistant, mainly in the darkroom. It’s from here that got his first camera and a new found love and knowledge of photography and its processes and it’s importance in war time. Aged just 24, his first published photo was of a notorious London gang and it was to be his entrance into photojournalism and several years later (between 1966 and 1984) he became an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine and got to cover many disaster areas and war zones including Aids torn Africa, The Vietnam War, the Northern Ireland Conflict and Beirut are amongst his most highly regarded work. His style of reportage and often harrowing images really convey the struggles and turmoil of his subjects. Not afraid to take images that would put him in danger (he was spared possible serious injury when a bullet struck - and was stopped - by his Nikon camera), McCullin would expose the underside of culture and conflict.

fig 1

One of his most iconic photos Shell Shocked Marine, (fig 1 below) was taken during a battle for the city of Hue, this image would go on to encapsulate the human cost of the Vietnam War. McCullin says he shot five frames of the unknown American Soldier traumatised by combat; they all show the same haunting glazed over look. It was this image alone that made me aware of his work during my photography studies and it still is, in my opinion, one of his most powerful images. Although he was mainly known for images from foreign conflicts McCullin also captured unease on home soil. Although tormented by what he witnessed over the years McCullin openly admits that he became addicted to war. The image below (fig 2) of an Anti War protester, is a strange angle for McCullin’s imagery and offers an unusual juxtaposition to his field reportage. In 1968 he was also invited to photograph the Beatles. These sessions have become known as “The Mad Day Out” and they contain many well known images of the band. In 2012, a documentary film of his life titled “McCullin” was released and is well worth a watch. In later years, McCullin has turned to landscape and still-life works and taking commissioned portraits. His website has much more of an insight into the man and his work through the years. Serving suggestion

• 4 tbsp fat (lard, goose or duck fat) • 350g assorted pork diced (a mixture of bacon, sausage and diced pork works well) • 1 large onion, halved and sliced • 10 large garlic cloves, peeled • 1 carrot, thinly sliced • 1 tsp fennel seeds • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 600ml stock • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 2 rosemary stalks, leaves picked and chopped • handful of parsley, finely chopped • 400g can haricot or cannellini beans, drained • few tbsp fresh or dried breadcrumbs • drizzle of oil, whatever you have • crusty bread & green vegetables, to serve

method 1. Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1. Put a large ovenproof pan (with a tight-fitting lid) on a high heat. Add your fat and diced meat, cook for a few mins to seal the edges, giving it a quick stir to cook evenly. Reduce the heat to low, add the sliced onion, whole garlic cloves, carrot and fennel seeds, and cook gently to soften the veg for a few mins.

Serving suggestion

2. Pour over the red wine vinegar, scraping any meaty bits off the bottom of the pan. Add the stock, tomato purée, and half the rosemary and parsley. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins, then season, cover with a lid and put into the oven for 2 hrs, removing the lid for the final hour of cooking. Stir occasionally and add the beans with 30 mins to go. 3. Remove the pan from the oven and heat the grill. Scatter the top with the remaining herbs and breadcrumbs, drizzle a little oil over the top, and return to the oven for 5-10 mins, until the breadcrumbs are golden. Serve with crusty bread and green veg. 41

CUBA

If you are thinking of visiting Cuba, do it now. For decades this Caribbean county has been shrouded in intrigue with only the more adventurous travellers experiencing the beauty, culture and flamboyance it has to offer. World politics played its part in Cuba’s rocky history. With US sanctions being imposed in the early 1960s, Cuba’s subsequent relationship with the Soviet Union made it a pariah in the eyes of the US government and many in western Europe. The country suffered a huge economic downturn after the fall of the Soviet Union and its iron-fisted leader, Fidel Castro came under scrutiny from the people for the first time when he refused to accept aid from the US. Fidel Castro eventually stepped down in 2011 handing the reigns to his brother Raul. Fidel died in 2016 aged 90. Things have changed in Cuba in recent years, Raul Castro has shown himself as a more pragmatic leader although he has vowed to continue with Communist rule. Relationships have been rebuilt with the United States and in 2015 full diplomatic relations between the two countries were resumed. With US embargoes lifted and travel bans dropped for US citizens, the country is seeing an economic and cultural mini renaissance with western goods flooding in along with increasing numbers of tourists.

Where to go

Havana is Cuba’s capital and probably the most well-know destination. Appearing as though stuck in a time-warp, this colourful, colonial city buzzes with café society, with ravenhaired Grandmothers sweeping dust from their steps while rebellious students enjoy heated political discussions over strong coffee and rich, dark rum. 42

Dilapidated buildings sit paradoxically alongside palatial government offices lining cobbled streets and grand squares. Havana was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 1982 and is home to the island’s main port which has seen increasing numbers of foreign cruise ships arrive in recent years. At night time Havana really comes alive with sounds of Salsa music, bright lights and pretty young things strolling along the ‘Malecon’ promenade. Cuba boasts miles of sandy beaches along its northern coast and over the years, tourist resorts have sprung up with dozens of luxury hotels catering to visitors from across the globe. The most famous beach area is Varadero, with 25 kilometres of sand and a plethora of all-inclusive resorts, shops, bars and eateries. There’s more to Cuba than the city and the beach. Explore further inland and you will find tobacco plantations where the famous Cuban cigars are produced, rugged mountains and swampland, home to numerous species of wildlife including crocodile! In these sleepy towns it is like time has stood still, with farmers transporting their crop in carts pulled by oxen and women with sun-beaten skin toiling in the fields. The Viñales valley is famous for its cave network, the Cuevas

de Indio, where you can take a boat ride within the caverns. On the eastern coast, Santiago de Cuba boasts a number of historic monuments and the Parque Cespedes where Fidel Castro declared the revolution a success in 1959. Cienfuegos, founded originally by the French has a different feel to other Cuban towns and boasts some wonderful mid-century architecture. If the busy resort of Varadero is not for you, then take a trip to Cayo Largo, a small island off the coast, with uncrowded beaches and a sea-turtle hatchery open to the public. Baracoa was once the capital of Cuba and is an interesting historical spot sitting at the foothills of the El Yunque mountain which offers excellent hiking trails through the rainforest.

Where to stay

Varadero has endless choices in hotels and all-inclusive resorts, the Melia and Iberostar chains feature there, with prices from 120 euros per night. Smaller more personal accommodation is available in simple guesthouses which start around 60 euros per night. In Havana prices start at 40 euros per night and the choice is vast, take a plunge, steer away from the larger hotels and enjoy real Havana in an apartment or guesthouse located in an historical building.

When to go

September to early October is hurricane season and this year some of the island was badly damaged by hurricane Irma. December to March is the driest time, with sunny days and blue skies. Rainy season starts in June.

How to get there

Air Europa and Iberia fly direct to Havana from Madrid with prices from as little as 650 euros return.

Need to know

• Getting connected in Cuba is not easy, Wi-Fi is sparse, even in the larger hotels. • Be aware of the currency, there are two different kind of pesos, the national peso and the convertible peso, both have different values so do your research. • Don’t rely on credit cards, cash is king in Cuba. • Although Cuba is a relatively safe place to visit, foreigners will often get hassled by street vendors, a polite but firm “no” usually does the trick. • Avoid talking politics, although it is an intriguing subject, most locals are uncomfortable discussing the regime with strangers. • Tipping is traditional in Cuba, due to low pay, many professionals such as lawyers and doctors earn extra money waiting tables or driving taxis. Cuba is going through a period of change and who knows how much of its unique charm will remain in years to come, so don’t wait until it’s too late.

THEGOLFPAGES By Tony Myles ...your regular insight into Spain’s best and most played golf courses, world tournaments and news.

Swing Tips from the PGA

For the following collection of 10 Best Golf Swing Tips Ever — what we view as indispensable tips for swing and short game drills — Golf Tips consulted some of its top contributors over the years. This story was updated May 9, 2017.

1. Keep Your Hands Low

Limiting the height of the follow through will effectively reduce the height of your shots. The lower the hands, the lower the ball-flight. Moving the ball back in your stance or choosing a stronger club and trying to swing easy are other ways to accomplish the same thing, but they’re less reliable and more difficult to execute. Instead, keep your hands low in the finish and the trajectory of your shots will be lower.

2. Give Your Spine The Forearm

Make sure you’re on-plane at the top of the swing to guarantee solid ball striking and increased accuracy. Make sure your right forearm is parallel to your spine, your left wrist is flat and your elbows and arms form a tight triangle. These are indications that you’ve rotated your shoulders into the back swing perfectly.

3. Use Your Body For Power

Every good golfer knows that power comes from the body, not the arms. To learn to power the club with your body instead of your arms and hands, put the club behind the ball at address, with your body in a dead-stop position. Without taking a back swing, try to drag the ball into the air. If you’re a player who uses his or her hands to control the club, you’ll probably struggle at first. However, you’ll quickly find that once you start moving the club with your body, you’ll begin to get the ball in the air more consistently. This helps you turn fully through the ball on the down swing.

4. Hinge For Power

Amateurs have problems hitting crisp iron shots due to two fatal flaws. First, the takeaway tends to be too low to the ground, which delays the proper hinging of the wrists until too late in the back swing. Second, in a misguided effort to create power, the arms tend to swing too far in the back swing. This causes a breakdown in posture and usually leads to a reverse pivot. These flaws cause miss-hits and a lack of distance and control.

Several simple steps can be taken to gain control over the length of the swing in order to create more solid contact. At setup, a 45-degree angle should be present between the left arm and the club shaft. This starts the swing with the wrists already hinged halfway to the necessary 90 degrees. During the takeaway, the hands should stay close to the ground while the club head moves up quickly. The goal is to get the left thumb pointing at the right shoulder as soon as possible. You’ll know you’ve achieved the proper wrist hinge when your left arm is parallel to the ground and the club shaft is perpendicular to it. This sets the wrists much earlier in the back swing, eliminating the need to swing the arms too far at the top. The tendency to lose posture and reverse pivot will be removed with this more compact golf swing. Creating the proper wrist hinge in the back swing will lead to noticeably better ball striking and, as a result, more consistent distance and direction on all iron shots.

5. Give Your Slice The Elbow

Some players like John Daly swing with their elbow flying out, while others like Sergio Garcia keep it in, proving that it’s possible to hit great shots with either method. However, my bio-mechanical studies indicate that the flying right elbow position favours a fade ball flight while a tucked right elbow promotes a draw. If you struggle with slicing or have always wanted to develop a power-rich draw, then the right elbow may hold the answer. Plus, when you let the right elbow fly, it has the tendency to raise the right shoulder skyward, which almost always causes an over-the-top move during the down swing and an array of bad results. The key for long-term success is to eliminate the faulty shoulder tilt and right elbow position at the top. The most efficient right elbow position for keeping slices at bay and promoting a draw is on or just inside the seam running down the right side of your shirt. When you place your right elbow in this general area, it allows the shoulders to turn level to the spine, making it much easier to drop the club inside on the down swing for maximum power and improved control.

DEBBIES STORY Following my dreams, I created my own business 5 years ago, the foundations of which became Oceanic Massage Therapies, which has gone from strength to strength but not without the struggle of doing it all on my own. Through my hard work & meeting lots of lovely people, I met my soul mate, and my life turned a very different corner. When I prayed for someone special to come to me and fill my life with love I just asked for someone kind and decent...someone Normal! Working and setting up a business by yourself is difficult and finding a soul mate and lover even more difficult, especially having true intimacy because at 55 years old, you’re not into one night stands.

park, different to usual, and decided to walk up and there it was. In-front of my eyes was a telephone number in the sky, right at the top buildings and this was to be the contact of our first home together and what we have decided to be transformed into our much desired “Couples Retreats”. So now we are busy turning our dream into a reality and we hope to open very soon!

Having always had a dream to have a retreat for my business to expand, it had proven difficult to find somewhere locally but then I had another one of those moments when I knew the universe was looking down on me and helping me. I have always loved the Pueblo above Mojacar and so went on missions many times to find the perfect place but only came home with dreams. Then out of the blue it all started to happen. Tom and myself were out for a walk, a get away moment for us both if you will. One of our favourite restaurants “la Candela” sits up in the Pueblo but we’d parked up at the bottom car

A new concept in Mojácar for wellness & well being, our new dedicated centre is ideally suited for couples of all ages who want to unwind, relax and revive in the tranquil beauty of Mojácar Pueblo.

our regular feature bringing you a host of astonishing facts and figures from around the globe.

paid sportsmen 2017

This is the list of the worlds most paid sportsmen of 2017 based on the Forbes list. The wealth they achieved this year is in terms of salary from their club or team and various endorsement and sponsorship deals. They are also probably some of the most recognised sportsmen in the world. They are the superstars of sports and this is reflected in the amount of money they can achieve doing their jobs. You or your children or grandchildren are likely to have a souvenir of at least one of these men be it a Ronaldo shirt or a Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes AMG Petronas team momento.

No. 1 Cristiano Ronaldo - Football ($93 million)

This past year Ronaldo was named FIFA’s best player in the world for the fourth time, secured a contract extension with Real Madrid that will pay him more than $50 million for each of the next four years through his 36th birthday and inked a lifetime deal with Nike worth upward of $1 billion.

No. 2 LeBron James - NBA Basketball ($86.2 million)

The NBA’s four-time MVP returned to Cleveland in July 2014 and led the Cavaliers to the 2016 NBA title, the first in franchise history and the first major sports crown for the city in 52 years. He re-signed after the win for three more years in a deal worth $100 million. His $31 million salary in 2016-17 made him only the third NBA player to earn $30 million in a season after Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. It is the first time he’s had the NBA’s top salary during his 14-year career.

No. 3 Lionel Messi - Football ($80 million)

Messi scored a La Liga-high 53 goals and assisted on 16 more in 52 club appearances this past season and is due for an extension with Barcelona. The Argentine forward notably rejected a first offer but the one-club man has insisted he wants to remain at Camp Nou. In December he renewed a lifelong deal with Adidas. The German sportswear giant is responsible for half of Messi’s $27 million in endorsement income.

No. 4 Roger Federer - Tennis ($64 million)

Federer was sidelined for the second half of 2016 recovering from a knee injury, but returned to the court with a flourish in 2017 by capturing the Australian Open. It was his first Grand Slam title since 2012 and extended his record for Slam trophies to 18. At 35 years old, he was the oldest player in more than 40 years to make a Grand Slam final. He followed up the Aussie win with victories at Indian Wells and Miami for his 91st ATP title. Federer has won $104 million in prize money in his career, but the total is dwarfed by his off-court earnings from appearances and endorsements. 56

the world’s

MOST...

No. 5 Kevin Durant - NBA Basketball ($60.6 million)

Durant shocked the sports world when he left Oklahoma City to sign a twoyear contract with the Golden State Warriors ahead of the 2016-17 season. Durant has a sizable endorsement haul with Nike, Beats, American Family Insurance, BBVA, Sparkling Ice, Panini and NBA 2K. But he has embraced the startup ethos of his new locale with investments in the Player’s Tribune, Acorns, Postmates and JetSmarter. Nike signed Durant to a 10-year extension in 2014 worth as much as $300 million, although sales are off the last two years for his signature shoes.

No. 6 Andrew Luck - NFL American Football ($50 million)

The Colts locked up their franchise quarterback in 2016 with a five-year deal. The deal included a $32 million signing bonus and made Luck the NFL’s highest-paid player based on average salary ($24.6 million) and guaranteed money ($87 million). Luck was runner-up two straight years for the Heisman Trophy while at Stanford and had immediate success in the NFL after the Colts selected him No. 1 overall in 2012 with three straight 11-5 seasons. Luck avoided endorsements early in his pro career beyond Nike but has since done deals with TD Ameritrade, DirecTV, Panini and BodyArmor.

No. 6 Rory McIlroy - Golf ($50 million)

McIlroy won two events during the PGA Tour playoffs, including the Tour Championship, to capture the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus that comes with the trophy. The eight-figure check pushed his on-course earnings to $16 million between June 2016 and June 2017. McIlroy continues to be a bankable marketing star. Nike signed McIlroy to a 10-year extension for apparel (Nike left the golf equipment business in 2016). The Northern Irish golfer also inked a long-term deal with TaylorMade in 2017. Other endorsement partners include Omega and Upper Deck.

No. 8 Stephen Curry - NBA Basketball ($47.3 million)

Stephen Curry has been one of the NBA’s biggest bargains since signing a four-year contract extension in 2012. His $12.1 million salary for the 2016-17 season was 85th highest in the NBA. The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement allows the Warriors to pay Curry more than $200 million over five years. Marketers have flocked to the point guard, while his team captured the attention of the casual NBA fan with their record season wins over the past three seasons. Curry had the NBA’s best-selling jersey each of the past two seasons. His off-court income has nearly tripled over the past 12 months.

No. 9 James Harden - NBA Basketball ($46.6 million)

Harden’s on-court income got a boost in the summer of 2016 when the Rockets renegotiated the last two years of his contract to cover four years and worth $118 million. The deal added $10 million to Harden’s 2016-17 salary. Adidas made Harden one of faces of its NBA campaign when it inked the point guard to a 13-year deal in 2005 that pays as much as $200 million. Harden’s unique style and strong play have made him one of the NBA’s most marketable players. Other partners include Beats, Foot Locker, BodyArmor, NBA 2K and a half-dozen more.

No. 10 Lewis Hamilton - F1 Motor Racing ($46 million)

Hamilton won 10 F1 races during 2016, but was narrowly edged out for the World Championship by teammate Nico Rosberg. The British racecar driver is in the middle of a three-year contract extension that kicked off with the 2016 season. It is likely to pay out more than $120 million, including bonuses. Hamilton won his third F1 title in 2015. He is the most marketable drivers in the sport, boasting endorsement deals with IWC, Monster Energy, L’Oreal, Bose, Puma, MV Agusta Motorcycles and Bombardier Recreational Products. 57

BENEFITS &of aSAVINGS winter pool cover A properly installed winter pool cover from Real Covers will seal off the pool and keep the water fresh and clean without any filtration and chemicals. The cover keeps out dust and debris. The cover is opaque, preventing any light from entering the pool. Mould and algae cannot grow because there is no light. A central membrane allows rainwater to filter into the pool. Just clean your pool at the end of the swimming season and shut it down until the next bathing season. What do you want from a winter pool cover? • Increased child and pet safety • Reduced maintenance • Keep out leaves and dirt • Savings on pool chemicals • Prevent algae growth • Reduce evaporation and save water • Reduction on energy bills (no filtration required) Let your pool hibernate this Winter. Along with the pleasure of owning a pool there is the constant need for regular maintenance to keep the water fresh and clean. For most pool owners, the swimming season on the Costa Almeria is only four to five months; for the remaining seven to eight months the pool is not in use but still needs regular upkeep. A specially designed winter pool cover, installed correctly, will seal off the pool and significantly reduce maintenance, chemicals and energy costs. Real Covers pool covers are made from reinforced polyester vinyl, the seams and hems are heat welded for added strength and they come in lots of colours for you to chose

from. Each cover is made to measure for a precise fit and held in place by tight elastic straps that make it difficult for children to remove or lift the cover. The tensioned cover will effortlessly support a child’s/pet’s weight, providing significant safety benefits. Once the cover is in place, the pool pump is switched off and no chemicals are needed until the cover is removed in the Spring. The coloured opaque vinyl canvas (topside) is black or beige underneath which ensures that no light enters the pool and therefore stops micro-organism growth. The elastic straps are placed at 50cm intervals and attach to a stainless steel/brass fitting that screws down flat when the cover is not in use. All covers are made with a central membrane which allows rainwater to filter into the pool and exit through the pool overthrow. The cover is removed at the start of the swimming season and simply folded away and stored until needed. We also offer a cover fitting / removal service should you require it. Real Covers have been installing winter pool covers to many villas in the Almeria, Alicante, Murcia & Granada areas since 1993. FIESTA DE LOS REYES. or Three Kings tradition. There is quite a debate raging across this country regarding whether Santa Claus is displacing the traditional Three Kings at Christmastime in Spain. The truth is that Santa Claus is becoming more and more common, but even families that sign up with “Papa Noel” usually keep their accounts open with the Kings. And as for the Kings themselves, they continue to arrive on schedule every year to villages, towns and cities throughout Andalucia (and the rest of Spain) to make the annual parade, which usually starts at dusk on the 5th January through the centre of urban areas. Melchor, Gazpar and Baltasar (the African king) are magically able to appear simultaneously throughout this entire land as evening falls on the Iberian Peninsula, and they don’t come empty handed. As their royal majesties parade about town with their entourage of locals smiling and waving from trucks, trailers and even floats (depends on local resources) they dutifully toss out handfuls of sweets to the children waiting in the streets at they pass. If you take little ones to the parade, be sure to bring along bags to handle the accumulation of little treasures they will certainly want to take home (even though usually these sweets are not very good quality). That same night of January 5th, children are supposed to leave their shoes out the night before to receive the gifts. However, nowadays some families are actually turning to the Christmas tree as the place to pile gifts as the Kings’ spending power grows and shoes can no longer support the weight or volume of the their delivery.

Some families set up their nativity scene in such a way as to be able to move the images of the wise men closer and closer to Bethlehem over the Christmas season. The idea is to have them arrive at the stable right on the 6th. Breakfast is a special occasion on January 6th with the Three Kings’ Cake the centre of attention. This is a sweet bread that is adorned with dried fruits and sugar. Inside, bakers have hidden a small prize wrapped in paper as well as a bean. The one who finds the lucky prize is supposed to be King or Queen for the day (a gold paper crown is often provided with the cake) while he who ends up with the unlucky bean is expected to pay for next years Kings’ Cake – and considering that some of these cakes go for about 20 times the price of a loaf of regular, unsweetened bread (if you buy at a bakery instead of the supermarket), that could be an unhappy lot. January 6th is a very special day throughout our region as it is a day for family to come together for a special meal, gift exchanges and time together. It is very much like Christmas Day in North America or northern European countries. Nowadays, Both Christmas Day and January 6th are getting equal celebration with the children’s gifts often divided between the two days – except in families on the “No Santa” side of the debate who persist in clinging to the old traditions thus making the kids wait until that very last day of the Christmas holidays for their presents. January 6th is a national public holiday.
