COME WINE WITH ME From brews to booze...

it’s a “sin” ALCOHOL FREE TIPPLES According to Alcohol Concern, over five million of us took part in Dry January in 2017 — with more expected to have joined in this year. In response, the big alcohol manufacturers are increasingly bringing out ‘dry’ versions of their products, a move that’s also thanks to twenty to thirtysomethings shunning booze and thanks to these innovative producers using new techniques, the choice of quality alcohol-free beers, wines and spirits has improved dramatically in the past year or two. The good news for anyone jumping on the Dry January bandwagon is that, now that not drinking is an increasingly big business, we no longer have to choose between a handful of pallid alcohol-free wines or the odd watery teetotal lager. Most alcohol-free drinks are made in the same way as normal ones, with fermentation converting sugar into alcohol. The alcohol is then stripped out via techniques including heating the drink to high temperatures to evaporate off the booze, reverse osmosis (where the drink is passed through a very tight filter that separates out the alcohol from the rest) or vacuum distillation (where the alcohol is evaporated off in a vacuum, which means it only needs to be heated to lower temperatures). The problem is these techniques can take out much of the aroma and flavour, leaving what’s left tasting somewhat lightweight — and not just in the alcoholic sense. But in recent years, more wines are having alcohol removed via ‘spinning cone’ technology. By spinning the drink very fast, it’s possible to remove alcohol more gently at lower temperatures, so keeping more flavours and aromas. Then there’s beer. Much of it has been made in the same way as normal beer. But an increasing number of brewers are brewing alcohol-free beers without fermenting them in the traditional way, resulting in malty, hoppy aromas and flavours minus the alcohol. Now, for the first time there are alcohol-free spirits, too. But can any of these drinks really replace your nightly tipple? In a way, yes — as long as they taste good. You still get to pop a cork or pour from a bottle and enjoy something a little more grown up than most soft options. 6

What you won’t get is the unmistakable oomph of alcohol. But the glow of your halo should make up for the lack of glow in your cheeks.

Alcohol Free Beer

Sin is the Spanish word for ‘without’ and is the quickest way to order an alcohol-free beer. Just ask for ‘una sin’. From being practically undrinkable 10 years ago, the standard of sin-alcohol beers has really improved. A popular Spanish brand is Estrella Galicia but there are many more great options out there. Many generally order whatever is on tap in a bar or restaurant as the taste and pour is always better than from a bottle or can. Alcohol-free beer on tap is available in a fair few Spanish bars nowadays.

Alcohol Free GIN

GINSIN 12 botanicals is a non-alcoholic spirit. It is perfect served with tonic water or in any gin cocktail as a gin-substitute. This Premium alcohol free gin is distilled with 12 botanicals, such as juniper, cardamom, coriander, sweet orange, bitter orange, lemon, cinnamon, orange blossom, violet, hibiscus, lavender and myrtle. It’s got a vibrant flavour and it’s perfect for those who want to enjoy a classic G&T but with a non-alcoholic twist.

N332 Driving in Spain

the best place to find easily digestible information regarding road and traffic laws in Spain.

Authorised to drive Assuming your insurance covers multiple drivers, you may allow any qualified driver to use your vehicle. However, in order to avoid problems if the driver is stopped, it is recommended that the vehicle driver is given a document proving that they have the owner´s permission to drive the vehicle. This may seem like an inconvenience, but it is for your protection. If the vehicle is stopped, the officers who come across a vehicle driven by somebody other than the registered keeper will question the legalities of the driver, which is in your best interest, as if it is stolen they will find out very soon. Otherwise, if a vehicle is stolen but not yet reported as such, there could be no reason for the Guardia Civil or police to doubt that the person driving the vehicle has the owner´s permission, and so it could otherwise go unchecked. But of course there could be a genuine reason for somebody other than the registered keeper to drive the car, which is why N332 have supplied a document for you to download from their website, and keep in your car for verification. Simply download the document and complete it, or complete the online version and print it, and attach a copy of both the owner´s driving licence, and a copy of the licence of the person given permission to drive. It should be completed in full, including a term of validity, and then dated and signed and you’re pretty much covered.

You can find more info and additional stories by visiting their website www.n332.es or liking their page on Facebook/ N332. They also have a new magazine “N332 Road watch” available for download as PDF for just 2 euros. 10

THINGS TO DO & places to see...

Lorca The city of the sun, the city of one hundred shields... or one hundred names. Whatever you may call it, it definitely stands out for being packed with monuments: a Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque city.

Lorca Castle

HISTORY:

Backed by the Peñarrubia and Calo de los Enamorados mountains, the historic city of Lorca faces down the fertile plains of Murcia towards the Sierra de la Almenara, beyond which lies the crystal blue Mediterranean sea. Declared a historic and artistic site in 1964, Lorca is known as the ‘Baroque city’ thanks to the important Baroque monuments in its historic centre. It won the Europa Nostra Award for working to conserve its heritage with the restoration of six of the churches in its historic centre after the 2011 earthquake. It was also short-listed in the European Commission’s EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) programme, in recognition of its sustainable tourism options. In the Middle Ages Lorca was the frontier town between Christian and Muslim Spain. Even earlier to that during the Roman period it was ancient Ilura or Heliocroca of the Romans. From Palaeolithic times through to the Roman era, the town of Lorca was home to a wide range of cultures and settlers, as can be seen from the numerous archaeological sites, the Roman milestone, and the Espolón and Alfonsina towers, among its historic remains. Other key sites include the porch of San Antonio, the 10thcentury gateway in the old city walls; several churches and convents from various eras and in an array of different styles; and the palaces and mansions in the Baroque style, such as the palaces of Guevara and the Condes de San Julián, and the house of the Mula family. Its military architecture includes the notable fortress, which restructured the mediaeval Arab alcazaba to make it practically impregnable. The town’s civil architecture is also interesting,

12

especially the buildings on the cobbled streets around the Plaza de España, such as Zapatería and Cava. Through the initiative ‘Lorca, a Workshop in Time’, designed to promote the historic and artistic heritage of the city, visitors can take sightseeing tours which include tickets for the tourist train, admission to monuments such as the Fortress of the Sun and the Palace of Guevara, and museums such as the Archaeology Museum and the Paso Blanco and Paso Azul embroidery museums. These last two museums house the most important treasures of the religious brotherhoods that organise the famous Easter Week celebrations in the town.

EARTHQUAKE: The town was seriously damaged by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake on 11 May 2011, killing at least nine people. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the larger earthquake had a preliminary 5.3 magnitude, it was so superficial that the magnitude was like a 7 magnitude normal earthquake, and struck 350 kilometres (220 mi) southsoutheast of Madrid at 6:47p.m. (16:47 GMT). The quake was about 1 km (0.6 mi) deep, and was preceded by the smaller one with a 4.5 magnitude in the same spot. LORCA CASTLE: (Castillo de Lorca) is a fortress of medieval origin constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries. It consists of a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, made the town and the fortress an impregnable point in the southeast part of the Iberian Peninsula. Lorca Castle was a key strategic point of contention between Christians and Muslims during the Reconquista. It is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest and is one of the largest castles in Spain.

Porch of San Antonio

Teatro Guerra

Culture The Teatro Guerra, is in the Plaza Calderon de la Barca, Calle Principe Alfonso, facing the square. It is a regal red and white building. The theatre offers a wide variety of events, including cinema, children’s theatre, drama, musicals, concerts, dances and opera. Tickets can be purchased in advance from ticketmaster.

Plaza de España: (Spanish Square) is one of the

most emblematic monuments of the city, located in the heart of Lorca’s historical centre. Containing the Collegiate San Patricio and the Chambers of the Collegiate members, the Casa del Corregidor and Posito, the granary of the 16th century, amongst others. They were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Plaza has been declared a Cultural Monument.

San Patricio: is a Renaissance-style building situated

on the Plaza de España. It was declared a National HistoricArtistic site by decree of January 27, 1941. The Collegiate is the only one in Spain which is under the patronage of St. Patrick. The dedication to the Irish saint, has its origins in the Battle of Los Alporchones, fought on March 17, 1452 (St. Patrick’s Day) against people of the city of Granada.

MARKETS

The weekly market dates back to 1465, when Enrique IV granted a free market on Thursdays. The concession was confirmed by the Catholic Monarchs in 1495 and by Charles II in 1685. It was first celebrated in the streets near the cathedral of Santa Maria By the 16th century it was next to the church of San Patricio. It even took place for a time in the pig market at Santa Quiteria. Today the weekly market is held in the Huerto de la Rueda every Thursday. There are two food markets, one at Explanada de la Estación, and the other at the aptly named Plaza de las Hortalizas. The Collegiate Church of Saint Patricio

Museums: The city has many museums of which the Museo de Arqueologico Municipal maintained by the Plaza de Juan Moreno is popular. There is also an embroidery museum. The city hall has many paintings of battles that were fought in and around Lorca. Paintings of local artists are also on display here. EASTER: The Holy Week celebration popularly known as the Semana Santa is said to be the best festival held anywhere in Spain where two brotherhoods vie with each other to display two colours namely the Azul (blue) and Blanco (white) for the highly competitive festive display of cloaks. Each of the brotherhood in Lorca, on this occasion, carries an image of Virgin Mary – one draped in a blue cloak and another in white cloak with a banner and a museum. 13

All about

EASTER Easter is the Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his the promise of eternal life.

Pretzels were a food that was associated with Easter. It is believed that pretzels are the world’s oldest snack food.

Easter is also known as Pasch or Pascha.

Easter is the second largest candy consuming holiday in the U.S. Halloween is the first.

Some people believe the word Easter comes from the pagan holiday honouring “Eostre” the pagan goddess of Spring which symbolized rebirth. Others believe the word Easter comes from the German word “Eostarun” meaning dawn and white. Easter is now celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon on the Spring Equinox between March 22nd and April 25th, at the end of Lent on the last day of Holy Week. Holy Week starts off with Palm Sunday the following Good Thursday the day of the Last Supper, Good Friday the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and Sunday the day Jesus rose which is now the celebration of Easter. The traditional word for painting Easter eggs is “Pysanka” and the exchanging of painted eggs started in ancient civilizations with people such as the Egyptians and Persians. They would exchange eggs as a symbol of fertility & new life. Rabbits and Hares were also symbols of fertility. In folklore, the Easter Bunny is a white hare, not a rabbit & lays eggs. The idea originated in Germany where it was believed the hare would leave colourful eggs for good girls and boys on Easter Morning. The first edible Easter Bunnies were made in Germany in the early 1800s. They were made pastry and sugar. 16

90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter. When most people eat chocolate Easter bunnies they eat the ears first. The most popular chocolate eggs are Cadbury’s Cream Eggs. Guinness Book of World Records stated the largest Easter Egg made was 25ft high and made of chocolate and marshmallow. Every year there is a big Easter Hunt at the White House in Washington D.C to celebrate Easter. The first Easter Egg Hunt or Roll at the White House was in 1878!

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena

A beloved classic, now a major motion picture (see our article in this magazine) read the book that started it all!

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

Winner of the 2016 Newbery Medal. A 2016 Caldecott Honor Book, a 2016 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book, a New York Times Book Review Notable Children’s Book of 2015 & a Wall Street Journal Best Children’s Book of 2015

Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe (one of the most popular boys in school) journey through time and space in search of Meg’s father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem. What’s a tesseract? It’s a wrinkle in time--but to say any more about the subject would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Madeleine L’Engle’s unusual and enchanting book. A Wrinkle in Time is the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal. It is the first book in The Time Quintet, which consists of A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time.

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. The acclaimed author of The Witch’s Boy has created another epic coming-of-age fairy tale destined to become a modern classic and it was the 2017 Newbery Medal winner.

Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them. This energetic ride through a bustling city highlights the wonderful perspective only grandparent and grandchild can share, and comes to life through Matt de la Pena’s vibrant text and Christian Robinson’s radiant illustrations.

TRAILS As a follow up to our lifestyle article back in our recent Christmas edition about how walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier, we have decided to highlight some of the popular walks in the area as submitted by users of the popular GPS route tracking website and app, Wikiloc, Trails of the World, but there are many other apps which are great sources of info.

BE PREPARED: Basic required equipment Before you hit the footpaths and trails, it’s recommended to have the necessary gear at your disposal. There are several trains of thought regarding this topic depending on you talk to but whittle them down and you get to a few essential items.

quality bags to choose from depending on your particular requirements or water load.

A sensible plan: Being prepared, planning your route and having good judgement has prevented numerous injuries & saved many lives. Always tell someone where you are going, make them aware of your proposed route and if possible, leave a copy of your trek plan. Common sense also plays a big part so if you see large dark clouds or it’s already scorching hot, don’t head out. If your heels feels hot, stop walking. Blisters, chaffing and even lost nails will ruin your day for sure.

Compass & Map: OK, nowadays we all have our phones and data packages so we can follow our apps and maps online but batteries die, signals wane and digital equipment can fail. Even if you don’t use them, it’s a good idea to have a compass and map (or at the very least a printout of the route from Wikiloc or even google maps) in your pack. You may have been on that route many times but you never know what might happen, paths good be blocked or you could confront a wild boar and need to change direction rather sharpish and then you’re in unfamiliar territory or even lost so be prepared.

Carrying your gear: Be sure to have a comfortable pack on your back. You’ll need to have enough room for everything but you don’t want it loose or half empty bouncing around on your back. It’s good to have a few,

Water: 1 litre of water weighs 1kg, which is why many people do not take enough water with them, especially in warmer climates like we have here, so ensure you have

EXAMPLE ROUTES: Mojácar & surrounding areas Route 1: Mojácar Pueblo - Sierra Cabrera - Sopalmo Macenas - Mojácar Playa. Level: Intermediate Distance: 16.2 miles Time: 6hrs 30mins

Route 3: Mojácar Pueblo - Sierra Cabrera ridge walk Mojácar Pueblo Level: Easy Distance: 2.8 miles Time: 1hr 15mins

This route starts with a steep climb to the edge of Pico Arráez out of The village and then continues with s descent towards Sopalmo. From there, continue along the Rambla de Macenas to the Torre del Pirulico and, finally, a stretch along the cliff to the end of Mojácar (Playa), in front of the Hotel Indalo. Caution is to be made at several points of this route as it does stray from designated paths to cross country and rocky terrain.

Starting from the sports pavilion at the back of Mojácar village, follow the access tracks and roads up towards the mast and then along the ridge of the hills to the first peak. A great entry level walk for getting used to the inclines the area has to offer.

Route 2: Camping El Quinto - Mojácar Pueblo - La Alcantarilla - Camping El Quinto Level: Easy Distance: 8.4miles Time: 4hrs 10mins This route is suitable for families and does not include anything too strenuous. Keeping to the back of the hills, facing Turre as you leave Mojácar village, you can take it ruins along the route and also orange groves and farms. There is a small amount of road walking here too so take care to be seen.

Route 4: Camping El Quinto - La Alcantarilla - Cortijo Grande - Turre - Camping El Quinto Level: Difficult Distance: 14.6 miles Time: 4hrs 30mins Maybe not the longest of these here but this is a demanding route encompassing several ascents and descents in the loop. Again pretty much on the Turre side of the Sierra Cabrera range, you’ll head across and up to La Alcantrilla before continuing up further towards Cortijo Cabrera but you’ll descend before you do, making the climb twice. Once at Cabrera, the second leg of the journey is mainly downhill towards Cortijo grande and on to Turre and back to the origin of the route on good tracks and roads.

plenty in, or hanging from, your pack. A Camelbak (or similar water bladder/pouch) is a great, flexible way to carry water and they have space for other items too. If you’re carrying bottles, it’s good to use Nalgene bottles, as the plastic is pretty much indestructible. Don’t carry glass! It’s always good to drink plenty before you leave too as this will hydrate you in preparation.

take up little space. You should carry at least 2000 calories of food and the small packs you can get from sports stores are ideal. Failing that, some nuts or a chocolate bar are a good start.

Lighting the way: A torch of any description is a must. They can be so small and powerful these days with LED technology, long lasting and even wearable on your head. You might think you won’t need it as you don’t plan to be out on the trail in darkness hours but if you get injured, lost or delayed whilst out you’ll wish you had one in your bag when you’re stumbling down the path in the dark.

Clothing: You’ll need a good pair of walking shoes or boots for starters. Don’t scrimp on these as you’ll end up regretting it with a badly twisted ankle or blisters etc. The clothing you wear is pretty much down to you but layer up and stay away from cotton, it absorbs and holds moisture which chafes and can make you colder this time of year. Keep everything as lightweight as possible and, although not essential here, carry spare dry clothes if you can plus something waterproof like a poncho or pac-a-mac. Oh, that sun can get be very strong so a good hat will help you too.

Food: Your body will expend lots of energy hauling you all over the hills. Continually snacking throughout the hike is a good way to keep the tank full and the motor running. High energy, compact foods are good choices because they

Extras: A small first aid kit (basics), a pocket knife, sunscreen & sunglasses, a whistle, bags for rubbish, nylon chord (great for broken laces), insect repellent, power-bank battery if relying on phone & loo roll as you never know! 23

“I think if you don’t love people and aren’t fascinated by them, you’ll never succeed as a portrait photographer, because your pictures will look cold.” Rankin

PHOTOGRAPHERSOFINFLUENCE David LaChapelle

David LaChapelle is an American commercial photographer, fine-art photographer, music video director, and film director who made his name by shooting celebrities colliding with consumer detritus: baubles, flowers, and fame recombining in delirious explosions of colour. In the nineties and early naughties, his slick aesthetic, which lifts lavishly from Christian pageantry and Renaissance painters, was inescapable, splashed across fashion editorials, advertisements, and music videos. By 2007, having been derided in some quarters as a commercialist, he’d left the business and absconded to Maui, where he lived off the grid at a shuttered nudist colony. In a recent interview with the Guardian, he said that he’d needed to escape the “propaganda” embedded in his work. “I never wanted to shoot another pop star as long as I lived,” he said. “I was tortured by them.

by Dean Baker

For me though, his work screamed pop-culture. I was studying photography and graphic design at college in the early 90’s and you couldn’t escape his images and influence on many of my fellow students. His style was brash, in-your-face and often overtly sexual or titillating and this is what caught the eye of many of us trying to stand out amongst the others on our courses. Colour photography was only just becoming an option for me at college as for the previous years, I had learnt all the processing in the dark room of my school in black & white only. Once gaining access to colour printing, my course work changed as I tried to recreate some of LaChapelle’s iconic imagery. Although I may nowadays prefer black and white photography, there’s no doubting that the colour images I do capture are often, if not subconsciously, inspired by seeing his work so early on in my career.

FOOD GLORIOUS

FOOD Easter Torrijas – Decadent Spanish Toasts All relevant religious holidays in Spain have a reflection in the food. Spain was a strictly Catholic country for centuries with the liturgical periods tightly marking the habits, and with food rules that had to be obeyed. Though nowadays the religious rules regarding food, like fasting during Easter, are largely overlooked, funnily enough the food traditions remain and making torrijas at home for the Easter celebration is one of them.

Serving suggestions

Also you can find them in pastry shops, restaurants and bars all over the country during this feasting period. Torrijas are apparently a rather ancient recipe, as they first appear quoted by a Spanish author in the 15th Century.

Ingredients • 1 bread loaf (with tight crumb, no baguettes here) bought the day before and let go stale • 4 cups (1 liter) whole milk • 3 tbsp sugar (or honey if you prefer) • 1 stick cinnamon • 3-4 eggs • Sunflower oil or other insipid oil for frying • Sugar and cinnamon for sprinkling

method • Cut the bread into 1 inch (2.5cm) slightly diagonal slices and arrange them on a shallow dish that can hold the milk. • Put all the milk in a saucepan with the sugar and the cinnamon stick, bring to a boil. Turn off the heat the moment it starts to boil and leave to infuse for 5 minutes. • Discard the cinnamon, then pour the milk on the bread and let soak for one hour. • Beat the eggs in a plate large enough to hold at least one torrija. • Heat the oil to medium in a large frying pan that can hold several torrijas at the same time. With a large spatula (the bread will be overly soft), carefully transfer the soaked slices one by one into the egg and turn them to coat. Then dip the slices into the hot oil. • Fry for 3-4 of minutes on each side, until brown. Take out to a dish lined with a paper towel and thoroughly sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Try not to pile them up while warm. Enjoy warm or cold. 47

ALMERIA Colourful open air street markets... are held in most of the main towns and villages throughout the province of Almeria, frequented by the locals themselves, the bustling stalls offer a real taste of Spanish life and a vibrant atmosphere in which to do a weekly shop. Clothing is cheap and can be a little tacky but there are some decent bargains to be found. Ladies wear best buys are in summer clothing, such as cotton sun tops, dresses, shorts and skirts, hand bags and purses, they won’t last forever but offer fashion at knock down prices. For gentlemen there is always a good selection of shorts, shirts and t-shirts, and in general shoes are a good buy for the price. On certain stalls haggling is accepted, and often expected, the banter of the stall holder is usually a good indication of whether or not to try to barter. Groceries and household goods are generally a fixed price.

Las Alpujarras.

Surveying the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. by Hispavan

The Alpujarras is a natural and historical region in Andalucía, Almería, on the south slopes of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent valley. Extending through both Almería and Granada. Turning right at Motril on to the A44 heading towards Granada then take exit 175 towards Órgiva, nestling in the valley surrounded by a forest of trees, which is the main administrative centre of the Alpujarras. Make sure you attend the Thursday morning market here to enjoy the colourful characters offering all sorts of goods from organic food to hand made jewellery. From Órgiva you can take a short diversion to Lanjaron, famed for it’s waters. Scores of snow fed springs bubbling from the mountains giving millions of litres, which are distributed throughout Spain. Visit the Balneario spa to participate in their many treatments. Returning along the A348 road to Órgiva, take the turning onto the A4132 and the road corkscrews up towards the Poqueira valley where in early spring the white of the almond blossoms matches the snow on the high peaks. For the most enjoyable walking, aim to go in April to mid June or September to mid November. Or travel the countryside by bike or on horseback using qualified guided tours. Paragliding is also available making this a good activity holiday destination. Deep gorges and high peaks of the Sierras are home to a wide variety of bird species making this area a Birdwatchers dream. Nestled within the hillside are the three white villages of Bubión, Pampaneira and Capileira which form the focal point of the tourist industry all with characteristic Moorish features such as narrow winding streets and flat roofs. A network of well sign posted walking trails link the three villages, whether it is a short stroll in the lower areas or a day long hike into the Sierra Nevada. One such walk of 7km starts in Capileira and passes the abandoned settlement of La Cebadilla built to house the workers of the Hydro-Electric station nearby returning via the river gorge. A lovely afternoon walk. Pampaneira, the first of the three villages of the picturesque Poqueira valley is closed to traffic but there is a large car park at the entrance. Handmade rugs and blankets in traditional 52

Alpujarras style can be bought in the many craft shops and there are several restaurants around it’s squares serving hearty country food. Pork, ham and black pudding are specialities of the area. Bubión, 1350 meters above sea level, is the middle of the three villages where the most prominent building is the 16’’’ century church. Capileira, the highest and most northerly of the three, laying just below the snow line. The Sierra Nevada highway runs through here and across the mountains to the city of Granada but motor traffic is no longer permitted this way making Capileira the highest village for traffic to reach. There is a two day climb from here to Mulhacen with an over night stop at a mountain refuge en route for the hearty hikers. On the hillside above these villages, the terraces built by the Moors can still be seen although now mainly uncultivated. Trevelez located nearby in the mountains to the east of the 3 villages, has a back drop of The Mulhacen which at 3479 meters is the highest mountain in mainland Spain and The Veleta, just a little lower. This village claims to be Spain’s highest. There are plenty of cafés and pensions to accommodate you within the labyrinth of narrow winding streets and many craft shops selling ceramics, leather and locally produced specialities of cheese and Serrano ham Silk weaving was an important industry here and many legends prevail of buried treasure dating back to the Moorish kings. There are various other small villages to visit if you have the time such as Pities and Portugos. Or perhaps you will have to make another visit soon.

swing tips from

PGA

the

Following on from last edition, we concentrate on the Special K technique...

10. K pasa?

At address, the Special K is the angle formed in your back leg by the upper and lower leg. The manner in which you stand to the ball determines in large part how well you maintain your Special K during your swing. The best advice is to establish an athletic, ready-to-move setup. Create this posture by bending forward from the hip sockets and back from the knees. When your back leg is flexed correctly, it creates room for your arms to swing and aligns the joints, one on top of the other. You should be able to draw a line from the top of the spine through the tip of the elbow and then from the tip of your knee down through the ball joint of your foot.

Keeping The K

To keep your swing level, this angle should be maintained from address to just after impact. A good way to experience what it feels like to keep the Special K while you swing is to look in a mirror while you take practice swings. Start with the setup position shown in the photo, below left. Hold it steady, then look in the mirror to connect the sight and feel of the correct back leg flex for that position. Next, swing to the top. Again, hold that position and use the mirror to see if you maintained the angle in your back leg.

Setup

In the Special-K setup, the body has that athletic look common to many sports—a posture ready for action. At address, flex your back knee to discourage any up-and-down body motion while you swing. If you prepare yourself correctly, you won’t have to make any adjustments once your swing begins—all you have to do is rotate. Check your lower leg to make sure 56

...continued

that it’s straight up and down (note that the crease in my pant leg is vertical). When the crease points toward the shaft, you know your lower leg is slanted at a bad angle. The reason the Special-K position is so important is that it unlocks the hips so they’re free to rotate. When the back leg locks and straightens at the knee, the back hip freezes, causing the body to tilt rather than turn.

Impact

Through impact, the trailing arm snaps straight, releasing power into the ball as the back knee kicks toward the target, still in its Special-K flex. Just after impact, both arms are straight, with the clubhead below the hands and the butt of the club pointing toward the middle of the body.

Back swing

When you keep the Special-K position during your backswing, it allows your elbows to stay level near the top of your swing. This, in turn, keeps the clubface from twisting out of position. Staying in your K makes your backswing more rounded and, instead of elevating the clubhead suddenly and tearing it off of its swing arc, the clubshaft travels on the correct swing path with a gradual, power-gathering ascent of the club. Another good learning method is to practice swinging with a shaft placed in the ground and angled to match the slant of your upper leg. You won’t be able to see the shaft while you swing, but you’ll sense that it’s there, and that will help you maintain your Special K. Once you establish the Special K at address, your goal is to maintain it all the way through your swing until after the ball has been launched. In order to do so, you’ll have to start your

swing by shifting your weight into your trailing hip so you can make a level lower body turn. If you fail to make this crucial weight transfer, your trailing hip will likely float upward and destroy your Special K. A second key occurs as you start back down to the ball. Here, establish your front hip as the rotational center of your swing. By focusing on the right hip, you’ll better prepare it to receive your forward weight shift, and it also allows you to maintain your back leg flex through the impact area and beyond.

Bonus! Tempo Training

When I watch a golfer hit a 7-iron, then a driver, he or she invariably amps up the swing speed with the longer club. Surely, the clubhead of the driver moves faster because it’s longer, but it’s because of the principles of physics, not because the golfer is swinging the club with a faster tempo. Tempo is the total amount of time it takes to create your golf swing from beginning to end. Some players have a relatively fast tempo, like Nick Price, while others have a slower tempo, like Fred Couples. Either way is fine, as long as you keep the same tempo for each club in the bag. Golfers get into trouble when they either slow down or speed up their natural tempo. TSB GOLF SOCIETY

When your tempo starts varying from club to club, the timing required to hit consistent golf shots is destroyed. That’s one reason why you feel you can hit your irons well one day, but not the woods, and vice versa. For every club in the bag, the tempo should be the same. It should take the same amount of time to make a swing with your pitching wedge as it does for the 7-iron and the driver, for example. What’s different is the speed of the clubhead. Because the driver is longer than a wedge, the clubhead moves faster throughout the swing, but if it takes two seconds to swing a wedge, it should take the same two seconds to swing the driver. Discover your ideal tempo by making three continuous practice swings, without a ball, using a 5-iron. Make the swings in a pendulum fashion, back and through, while maintaining good balance. Then hit a teed golf ball, focusing on repeating the same tempo with a balanced finish. Perform this drill with short irons, long irons and woods as well to see if your tempo, and timing, remain constant.

THE GOLF PAGES Tournament news, tips & course guides...

a brief history of

theMASTERS It all started back in 1934...

Newspaper headlines were full of big names in the spring of 1934. President Roosevelt was busy trying to prevent an auto strike. German Chancellor Adolf Hitler was working on a plan to increase Germany’s population. Clark Gable attended the Academy Awards dinner, but Katherine Hepburn and Charles Laughton declined to attend. On the sports pages, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were still belting spring training home runs for the New York Yankees. In Augusta, another big name was dominating the headlines. Robert T. Jones Jr. – Bob to his friends – was making his return to competitive golf. The venue was Augusta National Golf Club, and the setting was the first Augusta National Invitation Tournament. At 10:35 a.m. on March 22, 1934, Jones struck his tee shot on what is now the 10th hole at Augusta National. Jones gathered himself and, with playing partner Paul Runyan and their caddies in tow, strode down the fairway. For Jones, much more was at stake than his return to competition. It was about the club he co-founded, Augusta National, and a tournament, the Masters, that would prove to be his lasting gift to the game. Jones’ journey from the 11th green at Merion Cricket Club on Sept. 27, 1930 – where he closed out Eugene Homans to win the U.S. Amateur and complete the Grand Slam – to Augusta 3½ years later is an interesting one. Consider that Jones had not seen Fruitland Nurseries, the site where Augusta National was built, until after his Grand Slam. Consider that Jones and Clifford Roberts, who shared a 58

vision for a private golf club and an annual tournament that would celebrate Jones and his friends, were trying to raise money for their venture at the height of the Great Depression. “Most golf courses during the Depression were folding,” said Sid Matthew, an attorney and historian. “What a tremendous challenge it was for them to build. And then to make it popular.” Jones had been plotting his retirement for some time, but it still came as a shock to the public when he announced it in late 1930. After all, he was only 28. The pressure of competing in major championship events took a toll on Jones. He was the prohibitive favourite in every event, and he yearned for the day when he could enjoy a game of golf with friends and not be surrounded by thousands of fans. So he and Roberts set off to build his dream course. But he also had several other projects he was busy with. Jones went to Hollywood in 1931 and made the highly popular film series How I Play Golf. He also had signed on with sporting goods manufacturer Spalding during this time and, according to Matthew, was partly responsible for such innovations as registering your club specifications and developing a “matched” set of clubs. Jones went back to

California in 1933 to do a follow-up series of instructional films, and he also did quite a bit of writing as an associate editor for The American Golfer, a magazine. He also spent time following his friends in championship events around the country.

By Tony On July 15, 1931, The Augusta Chronicle trumpeted the news Myles that Jones had picked Augusta for his new course. “Bobby Jones to Build His Ideal Golf Course on Berckmans’ Place” was the large headline that accompanied a story from O.B. Keeler, an Atlanta sports-writer who was Jones’ friend and biographer. Remarkably, course construction took less than two years. The course opened for limited play in December 1932, and the formal opening was a month later. Getting members to join was more of a challenge, but Jones and Roberts persevered.

The final step was to stage a tournament. Initially, they wanted to bring the U.S. Open to their course, but that didn’t happen for a number of reasons. So Jones and Roberts decided to hold their own annual event. When Jones stepped to the tee for the first round in 1934, he was still the man to beat. At least he was in the minds of the press and the public.

“It’s the Field Against Bobby” read a headline in The Chronicle’s edition March 22, 1934. “It will be a matter of stepping back under heavy pressure for the first time since 1930” Grantland Rice wrote in a preview of the first tournament for The American Golfer. “No one can say in advance how the nerve strain will affect him, what his mental attitude will be against the keen blades of so many stars, all after his scalp.” In reality, no one knew what to expect from Jones. He had shot 1-under-par 71 in a practice round, and a few weeks before the tournament he had fired an impressive 65. Whether Jones would even play was up for debate. According to the club, he wanted to serve as an official and preferred not to play. But the membership prevailed upon him to join the field. “The final argument that persuaded Bob to agree to play, or so he said, was one I advanced, to the effect that he simply could not invite his golfing friends to play on his course and then decline to play with them,” Roberts wrote in his book, The Story of the Augusta National Golf Club.

In the running for 2018: Plus a quick course guide. The 2018 Masters Tournament will be the 82nd edition of the Masters Tournament and the first of golf’s four major championships to be held in 2018. It is scheduled for April 5–8 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Sergio Garcia will be defending the Tournament he won last year and hoping for a repeat I´m sure, but there are lots of players very capable of taking their own green jacket which could include Tiger Woods back from a long injury. The Masters has the smallest field of the four major championships. Officially, the Masters remains an invitational event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field. Contenders might come from this list of superstars: Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey, Jon Rahm, Rory Mclroy, Thomas Pieters, last years runner up Justin Rose or why not a past champion such as Danny Willett, Jordan Spieth or Bubba Watson.

MALTA

Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso’s Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum. The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers. Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.

Malta:

Here you can span the millennia with an astonishing array of things to discover. And wherever you go, the scenery and architecture provide a spectacular backdrop. The colours are striking, honey-coloured stone against the deepest of Mediterranean blues. Malta has been described as one big open-air museum. What makes it unique is that so much of the past is visible today. Delve into the island’s mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St. Paul or see where the Knights of St. John fought their most famous battles. 62

Gozo:

Gozo is known to provide a tranquil haven for a tempo and scene change. The charm of Malta’s sister Island is immediately apparent; it’s greener, more rural and smaller, with life’s rhythms dictated by the seasons, fishing and agriculture. Steeped in myth, Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso’s isle of Homer’s Odyssey - a peaceful, mystical backwater. Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside. Gozo’s rugged landscape and spectacular coastline await exploration with some of the Mediterranean’s best dive sites. The island also comes complete with historical sites, forts and amazing panoramas, as well as one of the archipelago’s bestpreserved prehistoric temples, Ggantija. Gozo also possesses a nightlife and cultural calendar all of its own, with some great dining out.

Comino:

Situated between Malta and Gozo, the smaller island of Comino is a paradise for snorkelers, divers, windsurfers and ramblers. Only 3.5 square kilometers, Comino is car-free and apart from one hotel, is virtually uninhabited. The island’s main attraction is the Blue Lagoon. In summer, this sheltered inlet of shimmering aquamarine water over white sand is very popular with day-trippers. Other beaches on the island include Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay. Comino is also worth a visit in winter, and is ideal for walkers and photographers. With no urban areas or cars on the island, one can easily smell the scent of wild thyme and other herbs.

Comino was inhabited in the Roman period, but did not have much significance until the Knights arrived. It then had a dual role: hunting grounds and a staging post in the defence of the Maltese Islands against the Ottoman Turks.

The Blue Hole, Gozo

The island had proved a useful base for pirates operating in the central Mediterranean and, though stark and barren today, it was home to wild boar and hares when the Knights arrived in 1530. The Grandmasters went to great lengths to ensure that their game on Comino was protected: anyone found breaking the embargo on hunting could expect to serve three years rowing on a galley. After WWII, Comino remained a backwater until its fortunes revived with tourism in the mid-1960s.

The Capital: Valletta.

The Fortress City, Citta’ Umilissima, “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen” is Malta’s capital city: a living, working city, the administrative and commercial heart of the Islands. Valletta is named after its founder, the respected Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Valette. The magnificent fortress city grew on the arid rock of Mount Sceberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbours, Marsamxett and Grand Harbour. Started in 1566, Valletta was completed, with its impressive bastions, forts and cathedral, in the astonishingly short time of 15 years, even more remarkable is considering the fact that mechanical tools did not exist at the time and the whole city was built entirely by hand.

Gardens & the Lower Barrakka Gardens are just three of the most popular ones, however on further exploration many more hidden gardens can be discovered. From the Upper Barrakka Gardens it is also possible to see the Saluting Battery as well as take the lift down the bastions to sea level.

Valletta has many titles, all recalling its rich historical past. It is the “modern” city built by the Knights of St John; a masterpiece of the Baroque; a European Art City and a World Heritage City. Today, it is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.

The options regarding where to stay are numerous and varied. There are hotels and aparthotels of varying categories. There are farmhouses and villas. There are self-catering apartments, guesthouses and hostels. You can stay with a host family or go for a timeshare property. The choices are endless.

The city is busy by day, yet retains a timeless atmosphere by night, that gives the feeling that you are walking back in time. The grid of narrow streets boasts some of Europe’s finest art works, churches and palaces. Valletta is abundantly rich in sites to see and explore, intriguing historical buildings around every corner: votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. Narrow side streets are full of tiny quaint shops and cafés, while Valletta’s main streets are lined with larger international branded shops for fashion, music, jewellery and much more. The best way to get around and see the most, from your visit to Valletta, is on foot and although the things to do & see are many, a good start and definitely not to be missed are Valletta’s beautiful gardens. The Upper Barrakka Gardens, Hastings Valletta

St John’s co-Cathedral & museum are definitely not to be missed, this elaborately adorned church is home to world famous artistic masterpieces by Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. Apart from beautiful Baroque churches other places of interest include the various grandmaster auberges, piazzas & museums.

Where To Stay:

Getting There:

The Maltese Archipelago lies virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93kms south of the Italian island of Sicily. Yet Malta is just a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. Choose from scheduled services or charter flights, many of which offer a convenient departure point from European regional cities. The national airline, Air Malta, operates flights to and from all the major airports in Europe (fly direct from Malaga with Air Malta from as little as around 120€ return in June), North Africa and the Middle East. Other legacy airlines and various low-cost carriers also operate regularly to and from Malta but from Spain you may need to make a connecting flight. The Maltese Islands are included in several cruise itineraries and provide an excellent base or stop-over for sailing the Med. You can also get here on a scheduled ferry direct from several Mediterranean ports.

BET TH TER EVEAN R!

A Peculiar Reign in Spain By Ric Polansky

“There are few foreigners about who have been living in Mojácar for as long as Ric. There are even fewer who thirst so mightily for adventures, from the jungles of south America searching for El Dorado or to jump in the middle of every local drama, every discovery, action, revolt, fire-fight and saloon as my old friend Mr Polansky. Mojácar is a fascinating place, surrounded by beautiful views, rich in history and legends. Let Ric show you around from the comfort of your armchair or pool-bed, or indeed, from the discomfort of your aeroplane seat. And stories, he has tales to tell and history to share. Enjoy these stories, written over the years by our Yankee troubadour, the man who put Mojácar on the map.” Lenox Napier Book now available. ISBN: 978-84-15387-77-0

FORCES

These are the best of each country rather than the best 10 as the USA claims four or five elite forces

1. British SAS (Special Air Service)

2. US Navy Seals

Nearly ALL the worlds Special Forces base their military model on the British SAS. In fact, the USA’s Delta Force was set up after the founder spent time attached to the SAS.

The Navy SEALs are the best the United States has to offer. They life is revolves around training. They are one of the best in physical capabilities after the Spetsnaz.

3. Russian Spetsnaz

4. Shayetet 13

Spetsnaz training would be illegal in the US or other Western nations. They are constantly out fighting and are practically invincible to any kind of punishment. They have some of the best weapons available too.

A unit of the Israeli Navy, they specializes in sea-toland incursions, counter-terrorism, sabotage, maritime intelligence gathering, maritime hostage rescue, and boarding.

68

5. Pakistan Special Service Group (SSG)

6. Polish GROM

Very brave and Courageous. A Russian president once said that if he had Pakistan’s army and Russian weapons he could conquer all the world because they are very brave

GROM was originally modelled on NATO’s tier one (special mission units) special operations units such as the US Army’s Delta Force, the US Navy’s SEAL Team Six (DEVGRU) and the British Army’s SAS.

7. Indian MARCOS

8. German GSG 9

Created in 1987 by the Indian Navy. They saw action during Operation Pawan in 1988. They were a part of Operation Cactus in 1988. The force has undertaken numerous joint exercises with special forces from around the world.

Grenzschutzgruppe 9 “Border Protection Group 9” is the elite Police Tactical Unit of the German Federal Police “Bundespolizei”. GSG 9 counterparts on the state level are the Special Deployment Commandos.

9. French “Commandos Marine”

10. Israeli Mossad

The Special Operation Forces (SOF) of the French Navy. Nicknamed the “Bérets Verts” They operate under the Naval Riflemen & Special Operations Forces Command & form part of the French Special Operations Command.

Literally meaning “the Institute” it is the national intelligence agency of Israel. They’re responsible for intelligence collection, covert operations, and counterterrorism (A unit known as Kidon).

BENEFITS &of aSAVINGS winter pool cover A properly installed winter pool cover from Real Covers will seal off the pool and keep the water fresh and clean without any filtration and chemicals. The cover keeps out dust and debris. The cover is opaque, preventing any light from entering the pool. Mould and algae cannot grow because there is no light. A central membrane allows rainwater to filter into the pool. Just clean your pool at the end of the swimming season and shut it down until the next bathing season. What do you want from a winter pool cover? • Increased child and pet safety • Reduced maintenance • Keep out leaves and dirt • Savings on pool chemicals • Prevent algae growth • Reduce evaporation and save water • Reduction on energy bills (no filtration required) Let your pool hibernate this Winter. Along with the pleasure of owning a pool there is the constant need for regular maintenance to keep the water fresh and clean. For most pool owners, the swimming season on the Costa Almeria is only four to five months; for the remaining seven to eight months the pool is not in use but still needs regular upkeep. A specially designed winter pool cover, installed correctly, will seal off the pool and significantly reduce maintenance, chemicals and energy costs. Real Covers pool covers are made from reinforced polyester vinyl, the seams and hems are heat welded for added strength and they come in lots of colours for you to chose

from. Each cover is made to measure for a precise fit and held in place by tight elastic straps that make it difficult for children to remove or lift the cover. The tensioned cover will effortlessly support a child’s/pet’s weight, providing significant safety benefits. Once the cover is in place, the pool pump is switched off and no chemicals are needed until the cover is removed in the Spring. The coloured opaque vinyl canvas (topside) is black or beige underneath which ensures that no light enters the pool and therefore stops micro-organism growth. The elastic straps are placed at 50cm intervals and attach to a stainless steel/brass fitting that screws down flat when the cover is not in use. All covers are made with a central membrane which allows rainwater to filter into the pool and exit through the pool overthrow. The cover is removed at the start of the swimming season and simply folded away and stored until needed. We also offer a cover fitting / removal service should you require it. Real Covers have been installing winter pool covers to many villas in the Almeria, Alicante, Murcia & Granada areas since 1993. Seville April Fair

HOLY WEEK

Starts: SUnday march 25th

Holy week or “Semana Santa” (Easter as we know it) is a very important religious time of year in Spain and the entire week is filled with colourful processions and religious celebrations.

Probably one of the biggest and most important of the April festivals in Spain is the Seville April Fair (La Feria de Abril) held each year in Seville, the capital city of Andalucia. As the festival is held near Easterthe actual festival dates can vary each year so it is always best to check before booking your holiday. The fair usually starts at Midnight on the Monday two weeks

If you plan to visit Spain specially to celebrate holy week then its best to check the dates well in advance as they vary between March and April each year. In 2018 holy week falls on the 25th to the 31st March. Even if you are not a religious person you will be inspired by

after the holy week (Semana Santa) and is the beginning of one of Spain’s, biggest parties lasting a whole week, ending the following Sunday with a spectacular fireworks display.

the whole atmosphere of Holy week in the towns and villages held across Spain. The brotherhoods of each church carefully prepare amazing processions which usually involves carrying the statue of the local patron saint through the streets on magnificently adorned floats lit by hundreds of candles.

National Spanish Cheese Festival Starts: Saturday april 28th

The “Feria del Quesos” is held in Trujillo and is a very tasty festival usually held from the 28th April to the 1st May each year offering all the fun and dance of a typical Spanish fair but here will also be able to try the delicious varieties of cheese from this region of Spain.

The National Spanish cheese festival in Trujillo is now in it 30th year and attracts many thousands of visitors looking for a food holiday with a difference. It is now regarded as the largest cheese fair in the world. Here you will find a huge number of stands by local cheese makers displaying their finest cheeses, not to mention an amazing choice of local wines to wash it all down.

The festival commemorates the battle of Alcoy in 1275 when Saint George assisted in the defeat of the Moorish hoards lead by Al Azraq. The Moors & Christians event takes place between the third and fourth weeks in April, not an attempt by the locals to be historically accurate, it’s about having fun as the marvellous, noisy and colourful spectacle of the battle is re-enacted with verve and energy by the local population. The Alcoyans prepare well for this annual festival as some 30 armies are prepared for battle.

Cheeses from the Extremadura region are renowned for their quality and taste and include such varieties as Torta del Casar, Torta la Serena , Los Ibores and the famous Manchego Cheese.

Moors & Christians, Alicante STARTS: 21st April

Another major festival in April is the Moros y Cristianos held in Alcoy in the province of Alicante. It is celebrated throughout Spain although one of the biggest celebrations is held in Alcoy from the 21st to the 24th April.
