SOLARENERGY THE FACTS ABOUT INSTALLING A SOLAR ENERGY GRID-CONNECTED ELECTRICITY SYSTEM Electricity bills have increased by an average of 20% each year over the past 5 years and the cost is likely to increase by similar amounts over the next few years.

How does a solar grid-connected system work?

proposal was against European Union directives and was met with enormous opposition. On the 9th October 2015 the government updated this draft proposal stating that grid connected A well designed solar system will last solar installations that produce less for 25-30 years. Does solar energy only work Where can I find out more information? capture on sunny days?

Solar electricity systems the sun’s energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field. The PV modules generate DC electricity - or Direct Current - sending it to an inverter. The inverter transforms the electricity from DC to AC (Alternating Current) for ordinary household needs. This system allows the solar electricity to be used as it is being generated.

Do I need permission from Iberdrola to install a system in my property? Yes . This is very important and must not be overlooked. Permissions need to be obtained before the installation takes place. Every grid-connected electricity system needs authorisation from both Iberdrola and the Spanish Government. Iberdrola is currently issuing fines of up to €30,000 for unauthorised installations.

8

What is the life expectancy of a solar grid-connected electricity system?

No. These cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate electricity on cloudy days. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced.

What happens to the electricity that is produced but not used?

Solar in Spain has been in business on the Costa Blanca for 13 years. They complete all the paperwork for its clients and is one of the few companies that actually ensures that their installations comply fully with the law. Their office and showroom is in the Pedreguer Industrial Estate, just off the N332.

Eddie the Eagle is an upcoming British-American sports comedy drama film directed by Dexter Fletcher and produced by Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling, David Reid, Rupert Maconick and Valerie Van Galder. The film stars Taron Egerton as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, a British skier who in 1988 became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. The film also stars Hugh Jackman and Christopher Walken, with a script by Simon Kelton and Sean Macaulay. The film is scheduled to be released on April 29, 2016, by 20th Century Fox. Michael Edwards (born 5 December 1963), better known as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, is a British skier who in 1988 became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. At the time, he was the British ski jumping record holder (a record later broken by others), the world number nine in amateur speed skiing, (106.8 mph (171.9 km/h)) and the stunt jumping world record holder (10 cars/6 buses). Finishing last in the 70m and 90m events, he became famous as an example of an underdog or “heroic failure”, and of perseverance and achievement without funding.

first British competitor in an Olympic ski-jumping event, taking part in the 1988 Games in Calgary, Canada. Edwards finished in last place in both the 70m and 90m ski-jumps, but partly owing to his Coke-bottle glasses (required to correct far-sighted vision) and general aura of clumsiness, he achieved unlikely celebrity in both the US and UK. Edwards said: “I’ve not really seen the script so I don’t know what they’ve picked out of the things that happened in my life and what is made up. There’s always a certain amount of [poetic licence] but I’m kind of anxious – what exactly have they put in about my life and how have they portrayed me?” Eddie the Eagle, which features Kingsman’s Taron Egerton as Edwards and Hugh Jackman as his (fictional) coach Bronson Peary, is due out in 2016.

Eddie revealed that a film of his life story, currently in preproduction, will detail his struggle with skiing officialdom, who blocked his participation in ski jump events, feeling he was a novelty act besmirching the good name of their sport. It will also tell of the sacrifices he made to realise his Olympic dream, Celebrated British ski-jumper Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards says sleeping in cars, cowsheds and on one occasion a Finnish that the forthcoming film based on his life story will only be mental hospital in order to participate in international events. “Wow, I didn’t realise he’d gone through all that,” commented largely “made-up”. one of my acolytes. “Sleeping with women he met in West In comments reported by the BBC, Edwards says that he has Country nightclubs, and all.” been told that “only 10 to 15%” of the film, entitled “Eddie the Eagle” and directed by Sunshine on Leith’s Dexter Fletcher, is “based on my life”. Things to do...Places to see...

At just a few hours drive West from the Mojacar area, Granada comes highly recommended as somewhere to visit if you’re living in, or just visiting, this area of Andalusia. From it’s fantastic history & city vibe to it’s proximity to the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, there’s always something to keep everyone happy so check those tyres and oil, book those bus tickets or take that flight as you’ll not be disappointed. Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonised southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. One of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This mighty compound of buildings – including the summer palace called Generalife, with its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada. At the centre of the Alhambra stands the massive Palace of Charles V, an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Other major Christian monuments found in the city are the Cathedral, including the Royal Chapel where Isabel and Ferdinand lie buried, the Monastery of La Cartuja and many

12

churches built by Moorish craftsmen after the Reconquest, in Granada’s unique “mudéjar” style. The hill facing the Alhambra is the old Moorish casbah or “medina”, called the Albaicin (main photo), a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses with secluded inner gardens, known as “cármenes”. The Plaza de San Nicolas, at the highest point of the Albaicin, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moorish palace. The Sacromonte hill, which overlooks the city from the North, is famous for its cave dwellings, once the home of Granada’s large gypsy community. The name Granada is ancient and mysterious. It may mean “great castle”, for the Roman fortress which once stood on the Albaicin Hill. When the Moors came here, the town was largely inhabited by Jews, for which they called it Garnat-al-Yahud Granada of the Jews. The Jews are said to have been one of the first peoples to settle in Spain, even before the Romans.

The Alhambra

The name Alhambra comes from an Arabic root which means “red or crimson castle”, perhaps due to the hue of the towers and walls that surround the entire hill of La Sabica which by starlight is silver but by sunlight is transformed into gold. But there is another more poetic version, evoked by the Moslem analysts who speak of the construction of the Alhambra fortress “by the light of torches”, the reflections of which gave the walls their particular coloration. Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was an “alcazaba” (fortress), an “alcázar” (palace) and a small “medina” (city), all in one. This triple character helps to explain many distinctive features of the monument.

Science Museum

Granada’s excellent science museum is located just two kilometres (or a 15-minute walk) south of the centre of the city on Avenida del Mediterráneo, opposite the Convention Centre. Probably the most stimulating museum for children in Andalucia, although be warned that large, noisy school groups come in term-time, from Tuesday to Friday.

Cornejo, Risueño and Verdiguier while the only tower of the two planned ended up half finished. On the northern side, there is La Puerta del Perdón, a magnificent work of Diego de Siloé who also built La Puerta de San Jerónimo. The chancel is not only stunning, but includes skillful architectural solutions provided by Siloé. Its circular plan and great height contain semi-circular arches upon which a double series of balconies rest.

El Albaicín

El Albaicín is the old Moorish quarter of the city. It’s located on a hill facing the Alhambra and there are dramatic views of this area from the palace’s famous rose gardens. The Zirid Monarchs first established their court here in the 11th century although little remains from this era today, apart from some crumbling remains of the wall (including the section which used to encircle the Albaicín and the gates of El Arco de las Pesas, Monaita and Elvira). The Cathedral is located in the centre of the Muslim area and dates back to 1523. It has a nave and four aisles, a crossing and circular apse. Alonso Cano built the main façade with sculptures by Duque

QI: HUMAN ORGANS Skin

The skin is our largest organ, weighing an average of 6lb and covering 18sq ft. As well as the pores, a single square inch of skin contains 20ft of blood vessels, 1,300 nerve cells and 100 oil glands. Skin cells are constantly being replaced: in an average lifetime, we each get through 900 complete skins.

Liver

In theory, everyone can survive perfectly well on one kidney, one lung, one of the two lobes of the liver and only parts of the pancreas and intestines. The liver, uniquely among such organs, has the capacity to grow back almost completely. This is good news given that it performs more than 500 different functions, including storing glucose, creating bile, detoxifying blood, producing antibodies and recycling hormones. It is the heaviest internal organ, weighing 3.5lb on average, although 96 per cent of this is water.

Many people believe that we “breathe through our skin”, so that anything that blocks all our pores causes rapid asphyxiation. It’s not true: we breathe only through our nose and mouth. The pores have nothing to do with it. If they did, scuba diving would be fatal. Covering people in gold paint (as in Goldfinger) might eventually kill them, if it was left on long enough. They would die from overheating, since their paint-clogged pores would be unable to sweat, which is the human body’s chief means of temperature regulation. It would be a very slow and unpleasant way to go.

Kidneys

Every day, kidneys filter the body’s total blood supply about 12 times per hour. They contain 140 miles of tubes and more than a million filters. They will perform even when they have lost 75-80 per cent of their function. If only one kidney is present, it can adjust to filter as much as two kidneys would normally. If one functional kidney is missing from birth, the other can grow to reach a size similar to the combined weight of two kidneys (about 1lb). A small percentage of the world’s population (approximately 0.07 per cent) has more than two kidneys. Two Latvian brothers found to have four kidneys each said it explained why they were able to drink their friends under the table. Kidneys were once popularly regarded as the seat of the conscience and reflection, and a number of verses in the Bible state that God searches out and inspects the kidneys, or “reins”, of humans.

Heart

The heart pumps more than five litres of blood a minute. In a lifetime, it pumps enough blood to fill a football stadium. After middle age, your heart shrinks and its ability to pump blood reduces by about 5 per cent a year. We haven’t always linked it to blood circulation. Aristotle believed that intelligence was located in the heart, and that the brain was a device for cooling the blood. You can’t start a stopped heart with a defibrillator. Electricity is only used when the heart is beating irregularly. If it has stopped completely, regular intravenous injections of adrenalin and other drugs are used. Survival rates for such patients are fewer than one in 50. Starting the heart by pressing rhythmically on the patient’s chest to pump blood through the heart can also work, but a steady beat is important – for many years, first-aiders were taught to sing the song Nelly the Elephant as they pumped. Now the recommendation is for faster chest compressions, so the 103 beats per minute of the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive is preferred.

Pancreas

The word “pancreas” comes from the Greek pan, “all”, and kreas, “flesh”, because it contains no gristle or bone. Inside the pancreas are a million clusters of cells called the islets of Langerhans, which regulate blood sugar. They were discovered by a German anatomy student, Paul Langerhans, when he was only 22 years old.

Spleen

The spleen is part of the immune system, storing white blood cells and filtering out old or damaged red ones. It’s on the left under our ribs and about the size of a fist. We can survive happily without it but it’s far from useless. We can use it to predict the weather: Gus Wickstrom of Tompkins, Saskatchewan, predicted weather conditions six months in advance by looking at the spleen of a pig. Wherever it thickened he predicted a cold spell, a bulge signified bad weather, and he could even foresee winds and squalls. 14

Pétanque Boules Petanca HISTORY Pétanque (Petanca here in Spain) descends from one of the oldest games in human history, the archetype of which involves throwing or rolling an object as close as possible to a marker. Pétanque belongs to a family of ball games that developed in the Mediterranean, today called Boules in French and Bacci in Italian.

the Provençale, which takes place in the Parc Borély in Marseille, in August.

Jules LeNoir was an excellent Jeu Provençale player until an accident left him crippled from the waist down. Although confined to a wheel chair, he began challenging players to a new betting game, involving pointing and shooting at a bouchon by players standing with their feet (or wheels) placed in the circle. coming through... Priority vehicles.

Blue or orange flashing lights, sirens, bells, the very thought conjures up the image of an emergency vehicle, attending or dealing with a life threatening or emergency situation, but what about a car intermittently sounding its horn and waving a handkerchief? That too is a priority vehicle in certain circumstances, and other vehicles must move out of the way, if it麓s safe to do so. Let us explain. As well as vehicles of law enforcement authorities such as the police and Guardia Civil, fire service, Protecci贸n Civil, rescue services and health, public or private, Tow trucks (gruas) attending emergencies are also considered priority vehicles. This is to ensure the fastest response time to clear up the debris and vehicles following road incidents and collisions. All these vehicles responding to an emergency situation have priority over all other road users. Under certain conditions, they are exempt from certain other rules and regulations whilst responding to emergencies, such as speed limits. They also have priority through junctions, intersections and traffic lights, so long as they take appropriate precautions to avoid collisions with other road users, such as ensuring other vehicles are topped or safe and that there are no pedestrians in their path, for example. These exemptions only apply when responding to an emergency situation.

This could also mean including turning around on motorways and driving in the opposite direction to that permitted, and use their vehicles to block the road to assist others in dealing with emergencies so please be aware. In certain circumstances, and only when there is a risk to life, any other vehicle can assume the role of a priority vehicle by intermittently sounding the horn, connecting an emergency light (if available) and using hazard lights, or waving a cloth, flag or even a handkerchief to raise the awareness of their presence to other road users. In these situations, you must still respect the laws relating to the movement of vehicles, such as speed limits and giving way at junctions, this is not an excuse for any driver to break the law. You should also be aware that if you do take on the role of saviour with your vehicle, you are highly likely to have to explain the circumstances which prompted you drive in this manner to law enforcement officers, as the process is reserved for life-threatening situations, but one that may well mean the difference between life and death for a victim, and so is a valuable piece of information worth knowing. Finally, remember, that if you see any vehicle displaying these characteristics, the situation they are responding to is likely to be one where a life or lives are in danger, so please respect their signals and move over to allow these priority vehicles to pass.

Exercise 1: Bodyweight Squat A

EXERCISE 3: Hip raise

exercise 4b: modified side plank

A B

Stand as tall as you can with your feet spread slightly wider than shoulderwidth apart. Hold your arms straight out in front of your body at shoulder level, so that your arms parallel to the floor [A]. Keep your torso as upright as you can for the entire movement, with your lower back slightly arched. Brace your abs, and lower your body as far as you can by pushing your hips back and bending your knees [B]. Pause, then push yourself back to the starting position. That’s one repetition. Do 15 to 20 repetitions.. Exercise 2: Incline Push-up A

Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Place your arms out to your sides at a 45-degree angle, your palms facing up. Now try to make your tummy as skinny as possible and hold it that way—this gives you a tight core—while breathing normally. That’s the starting position [A]. Keeping your core tight, squeeze your glutes and raise your hips so your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees. Pause for five seconds—squeezing your glutes tightly the entire time—then lower body back to the starting position [B]. Do 10 repetitions.

If the side plank is too difficult, hold for five seconds, rest for five seconds, and repeat as many times as needed to total 30 seconds. Each time you perform the exercise, try to hold each repetition a little longer, so that you reach your 30-second goal with fewer repetitions. If that’s still too hard, bend your knees 90 degrees and allow your lower legs to rest on the floor as you do the exercise. (Your body will now form a straight line from your knees to your shoulders.) exercise 5: floor - i raise A

exercise 4a: side plank

B B

Assume a push-up position, but place your hands placed on a raised surface— such as a box, bench, ottoman or one of the steps of your stairs—instead of the floor. Your body should form a straight line from your ankles to your head [A]. Keeping your body rigid, lower your body until your upper arms dip below your elbows. Pause, and then push yourself back to the starting position as quickly as possible [B]. (The higher the surface on which you place your hands, the easier the exercise becomes—you can even lean against a wall if you need to.) If the incline push-up is too easy, do it the old-fashioned way, with your hands on the floor. Do 12 to 15 repetitions.

Lie on your right side with your knees straight. Prop your upper body on your right elbow and forearm, which should be directly below your right shoulder. Place your left hand on your left hip. Try to make your tummy as skinny as possible and hold it that way—this gives you a tight core—while breathing normally. Then raise your hips until your body forms a straight line from your ankles to your shoulders. With your core tight, hold this position for 30 seconds. Roll onto your other side and repeat.

This time, move your arms so that your body forms a straight line from your feet to your fingertips. Your palms should be facing each other, with the thumb side of your hand pointing up [A]. Raise your arms as high as you comfortably can [B].

How to do it:

Perform this workout as a circuit, completing the prescribed number of repetitions of each exercise without resting. Once you’ve done one set of each exercise, rest for two minutes, then repeat the entire circuit one to two more times.

There’s a popular saying among fitness experts: ‘’The best exercise is the one you’re not doing.’’ The take-home message? To achieve the best results, you need to regularly challenge your body in new ways. So while classic movements like the pushup, lunge and squat are the staples of any good workout plan, varying the way you perform these exercises every four weeks can help you avoid plateaus, beat boredom and speed fat loss. 21

Corsica

’s Adele Land

ON I T A N I T S DE .. REPORT.

All Packed Up Exotic destinations, far flung countries and a taste for adventure are the inspirations for most 21st century travellers, with the focus on the new and exciting or the desire to see as much of the planet in our lifetime as possible...

Vladimir Raitz

It’s hard to believe that only two generations ago our parents and grandparent were testing the waters of the Mediterranean, cautiously sipping their first sangria or boarding an aeroplane for the first time in their lives. Tales in the pub on their return of “chewy onion rings” (calamari) and other ‘foreign muck’, and how that ‘Gringo’ waiter was chatting up my missus”, spoke of mysterious places with days under a hot sun and sultry nights spent sampling the local brew.

The Russian entrepreneur filled a Dakota aircraft with members of the public and a six-hour flight took the excited holidaymakers to Corsica where they enjoyed a week under canvas in old US Army tents on the Club Olympique camp site. The package holiday was born.

As a child in the 1970s I enjoyed my first package holiday with my parents, to then-unknown island of Ibiza, when San Antonio was a sleepy village and the ‘club scene’ hadn’t been invented.

Infamously, in 1951, former mayor of a tuna fishing village called Benidorm, Pedro Zaragoza, met with General Franco and put forward a plan to build a series of skyscrapers along the coastline to capitalise on the trend of Brits bitten by the travel bug. The plan was agreed and the birth of Benidorm as we know it now was born.

I remember spending every holiday stalking the poor holiday rep, in awe of her uniform, glamour and knowledge. By the time I turned 21 I was wearing my own uniform in the resort of Torremolinos and there began my long career in the travel industry. The great British package holiday celebrated its 65th year in 2015 and how overseas travel has moved on since those heady days of glossy travel brochures depicting suntanned holidaymakers and strap-lines promising ‘fun in the sun’. Vladimir Raitz, founder of the original Horizon Holidays organised the first mass package tour in 1950. 26

Along with this newly-discovered thirst for travel, sleepy coastal towns in Spain and Greece transformed into bustling holiday resorts.

Zaragoza was threatened with excommunication from the Catholic Church as he became the first mayor to allow bikinis to be worn. While people may argue that towns such as Benidorm, Torremolinos and Tossa de Mar were ruined by mass tourism and those that came with it, many a millionaire was made as savvy land owners turned their olive

fields into hotels and many of those families continue to reap the rewards. The popularity of the package holiday surged into the 1960s 70s and 80s with new tour operators and charter airlines springing up every year. Travellers began to demand more exotic destinations and package tours branched out as far as the US and the Caribbean. Tour operators competed aggressively on pricing and introduced their own speciality brands including winter holidays tailored for the over 55s and summer packages for the youth market. Club 18-30 launched in the 1970s with the slogan ‘your granny wouldn’t like it’ and fast became the choice for young people going on holiday without their parents for the first time, stories of drunken debauchery, arrests and sex on the beach were rife and the later slogan ‘Beaver Espana’ generated a record number of complaints to the advertising standards agency, but the brand continues today. In the 1990s, as the internet became a must-have in every home, holidaymakers became more adventurous, shunning the air/hotel package for independent travel to off-the-beaten-track locations, purchasing flights and 60’s Benidorm

accommodation separately from a plethora of travel websites, it seemed the turning point for the package holiday had arrived. A number of tour operators fell by the wayside while others merged and changed their business model to include luxury all-inclusive holidays and leaving behind the so-called bucket and spade brigade. According to industry insiders, in the last few years the package holiday has seen some kind of resurgence. Experts put the change in trend down to terrorist related incidents in places such as Tunisia and Egypt and the instability of certain long-haul destination countries. People feel more secure with a ABTA or ATOL bonded company in the knowledge that should anything go wrong either before they travel or during their holiday, they will have the support of a team of co-ordinators to help alleviate any difficulties. Market leaders Thomas Cook and TUI have both increased their capacity to popular ‘old-school’ resorts such as the Spanish Costas and Spanish and Greek islands as the demand increases. Budget airline Jet2 has also launched a package holiday brochure and is recruiting hundreds of resort staff across the Mediterranean. While the package holiday has moved on from its hey day, one thing is for sure, the wander lust of the human race will always remain.

“2015: A Hectic Year .”

Well that was a pretty hectic year. It started in January when my daughter and her boyfriend came over and we took a week off and went skiing to the Sierra Nevada, February was really quiet as it was quite cold and windy, March started with 15 members of team Cyclogical participating in the Valley of the grapes Sportif in Monforte Del Cid with 5 of the riders ( including 75 year old Mickey ) doing their first ever Sportif. Our last 3 team riders ended up cycling in torrential rain for an hour but everyone finished and we won the Team event a lovely seranno ham. Next, Lynn and I decided to take on an assistant Josh to train up as a cycle technician and generally assist us in the shop, he is still with us and is fitting in well , we wonder how we managed without him. April we had 12 riders again entered into the Sportif at San Vincente this was a lot tougher with more climbing but again everyone finished with good times. As the summer approached we all had our own agendas with family and friends interfering with our normal routines but Hey! Ho! It’s great to see them all just sometimes difficult to fit them in especially when you try to fit your work in too. Tony took part in La Sufrida (the suffering) which is a really tough Sportif in the mountains in and around the Almeria Area. Martyn went to Ireland to take his son in law on his first Sportif and took part in the Wicklow 200 (Garden of Eden) which is one of Irelands Premier Sportifs and is a tough 200kms around the beautiful Irish countryside. Owen and Torry went to the Pyreness to take part in Quebrantahuesos (the bone crusher) which is one ne of the nn and I toughest 200kms Sportifs in europe. In May Lynn went back to Elgin, Scotland via Norway to surprise my p best mate at his 60th birthday bash (it rained for 4 days ) but we enjoyed the break.

Every Saturday for our Saturday afternoon hybrid ride we would get more and more people turning up to join us and we met some great people and had some super rides with them. Chico, by this time, was getting bigger and heavier but not too much, he now has a big basket on the rear of my bike and still comes with us every Saturday and Monday and if we can’t find him he’s in the garage trying to get into his basket and is just one of the guys now. He still comes to work with us every day and has many girlfriends who come in just to see him and Pauline still comes in to walk him every day at 11am and he really looks forward to her visits. July was really warm with temperatures in the high 40s but we all still went cycling as there is always a breeze. My daughter’s boyfriend and his mate cycled across from Elgin, Scotland to Quesada in 21 days (2000kms ) and still wanted to cycle up to Hondon de las Frailes with us on the Sunday. The Tour de France was on and again team Sky had a fantastic 3 weeks cycling with Chris Froome winning again. August we had the La Vuelta right on our doorstep with thousands of people lining the route in our area a spectacle not to be missed and hopefully we will see more local routes this coming year. We also had a record amount of buckets of beer (15 ) after our Thursday night training ride.

September: we started a beginner’s road bike group with 11 people turning up to try road bikes, the object was to encourage people to try a road bike or if they already had one to learn how to cycle in a group, teaching hand signals and safety, building up their confidence. This proved very successful and we now have a couple of new guys joining our main group. Lynn went to the doctors with a minor problem and ended up in Alicante hospital having tests, an mri scan and eventually an operation so she was out of action for a few weeks but thank goodness is now back to normal. We also managed to get sponsor money for our gents hybrid group and got them all really smart team kit so the guys now look more professional and are all chuffed to bits. We then had a night cycle with a difference it was Owens birthday and he had booked the Bicibar for 20 of us (the beer wagon that you cycle round whilst drinking beer ) that was a great night but really hard work for the ones that put the effort in. October : My parents arrived for a month which was great as they looked after Chico while Lynn was out of action we also had the builders in and they kept an eye on them. My mate Willie flew across to take part in his very first Sportif and not just an easy one but 126kms around Calpe I just took my time and cycled round with him, he did really well and we still won the team trophy. Alan led a 6 man team at the 6 man time trials in Murcia and they finished in a creditable 4th place.

Peter and his girlfriend moved back to the UK after 6 years here in Spain so we will all miss him as he has been a great buddy. November things got Quieter so Lynn and I took a few days off and went to Alicante and just chilled out, it’s a lovely place and right on our doorstep but you never think of going there. December started with our Couples Hybrid groups Christmas dinner in the Minigolf which was fantastic, then the next day we had our Road bike group Christmas dinner at Ronald’s restaurant followed by drinks at Shananigans bar which again was a brilliant night, the Hybrid groups male and female both had their Christmas rides followed by Christmas dinner in the Minigolf then things quietened down. Boxing day was a nice cycle with the couples group to La Marina and a coffee on the beach then it was Hogmanay. Over and above all of that we also had to fit in all of our kids and their partners , parents, brothers, sisters and friends for their annual holidays but it was all great and we look forward to doing it all again this year. We are really looking forward to a few days off at the start of the year and a nice gentle quiet January and February before it all starts again. Lynn and I would like to thank you all for your support and wish you all good health and happiness, all the best for 2016. Get on yer bike and keep those wheels turning. Gary and Lynn

All of our routes are now available from our website on www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com Remember Gary and Lynn are available at “Cyclogical” in Quesada, Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10.00am till 2.00pm on a Saturday to assist and advice you on all your cycling requirements including route maps. 29

4 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS

Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

BASIC ELEMENTS

understanding the big 3...

Advancements in technology has seen camera’s and equipment become both affordable and practical to the point that the average person can create professional images which would have been seen as impossible to the amateur photographer just 20 years ago. However, every camera can still be seen as essentially just a box with a hole in one end. Sure that hole is quite important (being essentially where the light comes through), and you still need the mechanics and means to record a photo but at its simplest, the basic elements to capture an image has not changed...and it all starts with the exposure. Exposure is the basic element of any photograph taken and recorded. Essentially, it is exactly how it sounds, exposure is how much light your shot was exposed to, and this reflects on what is produced in your final image, be it on film, or more likely nowadays, digitally. Think of exposure as your eye, if you are in a pitch black room with no light, you obviously can’t see anything. When we are looking at something we are not actually seeing it directly, we are looking at the light reflecting and bouncing off the objects in front of us. The same can be said if there is too much light, think of when you wake up in the middle of the night and turn a bright light on, your eyes have not adjusted yet so to you it seems too bright and you can’t focus. This is the same in photography, and why the most common critique of images is that they are either underexposed, (not enough light meaning an image is too dark), or overexposed, (too much light leading to an overly bright image).

Exposure is determined by three essential elements... Aperture is the setting which controls the size of the opening of light which comes through to the lens. Normally this is done by controlling the aperture blades which can be changed to allow the aperture to become smaller, in which less light is let through, or obviously larger where more light is allowed to pass through. Aperture is measured in f-stops, for example f/2.0, f/2.8. f/4.0 etc. The smaller the f-stop number, the larger the lens opening, and therefore the more light a lens can let in. This also affects our depth of field but that’s for another time! Shutter Speed is simply put, the amount of time that the camera lets the light coming in, stay exposed and become recorded. This can be changed quite easily and is measured in fractions, i.e. 1/60, 1/125. This number relates to the timing that the shutter is left open, for example 1/60 shutter speed will mean the shutter stays open for 1 sixtieth of a second. Most camera’s will have a larger range of varying shutter speeds for the user to work with, from Sonic the Hedgehog like speeds of 1/4000 which is great for capturing moving action such as wildlife or freezing sports events, to long exposures of sometimes over a minute long, perfect for landscape photography or low light photography with a tripod. ISO is slightly less obvious as the above two as to what it is and what role it plays, but has just as much importance in determining correct exposure. ISO is normally measured from 100, 200, 400 etc., with a low a number as possible preferred. This is because the higher ISO that is used, typically the more ‘noise’ you get on an image, where an image is not as sharp as in the lower ISO’s. “So why don’t we shoot all shots with a low ISO?” I hear you say. Well simply put, it’s sometimes not possible, especially in difficult conditions such as low light. Top: Aperture sizes in relation to number. Next: The Exposure Triangle Next: Example of slow shutter speed/ long exposure. Bottom: Shallow depth-of-field focusing.

Individually we have looked at the three elements that make up exposure, so it’s important to realise that all three need to be in sync to get a ‘good’ exposure. The key in the end however, as the same with pretty much all aspects of learning photography, is that practice makes perfect. NEXT ISSUE: I touch on using Depth of Field to enhance your shots.

Pablo Artal was a senior researcher at the Instituto de Optica (CSIC) in Madrid until he became Professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, Spain. Prof. Artal was secretary of the Spanish Optical Society (SEDO); associated Dean of the Science Faculty and Director of the Physics Department at Murcia University. Prof. Artal has pioneered innovative and significant advances in the methods for studying the optics of the eye The Following is what he has to say about the new procedure, direct from his blog www.pabloartal.blogspot. and to understand the factors that limit human vision. He com.es has published more than 200 papers that received more than 7000 citations. He received the prestigious award “Edwin H. Land Medal” in 2013 and the King “Jaime I” “Dear Prof. Artal. I am not a scientist, but I enjoy reading your posts. Thank you. My mother in low has Age-related Macular Degeneration and I read a tweet where you were mentioned as inventor of a new type of lenses for this disease. Could you give more details on this new discovery? Andrew, Charlotte, USA” “Dear Andrew, thanks for reading my blog and for the question. You are right, during the last couple of years I have been working on a new mini telescope to be implanted in the eye to help patients with Age-related Macular Degeneration. I was interested for a long time on how to improve the quality of the optics of intraocular lenses and I knew that even small

improvements can make a different in patients’ quality of vision and life. So, I was very lucky when Dr. Bobby Qureshi, from the London Eye Hospital, approached me with his ideas of an intraocular mini telescope. Dr. Qureshi is a leading surgeon in the UK with a lot of experience in the most advanced technologies. He was also so enthusiasm about the potential of this idea that I decided to help him with the optics without much hesitation! (although I knew the task was really enormous). After an intensive work and many different approaches, we have now an amazing new mini telescope ready to help many patients.”

Rescue Remedies

by Adele Land

By the time you read this it will be too late to save you from that inevitable New Year hangover. There’s no worse reminder of the night before than a raging headache, combined with your stomach turning cartwheels and your

mouth feeling like you chowed down on half the beach. So, putting January 1 aside, these tried and tested hangover ‘cures’ will stand you in good stead for the end of this year and for summer parties and celebrations throughout 2016.

Virgin Mary

Sports Drinks

While so-called ‘hair of the dog’ may make you feel better temporarily, downing a few more vodkas will only add to the pain once the initial effect wears off. Leave out the spirit and pour a good-sized glass of tomato juice, over ice and with a decent shot of tabasco. The vitamin C will go some way to helping you over the worst.

Raw Eggs

Ok, before you go off and hug the porcelain, eggs are a great source of protein and amino acids, especially uncooked, the amino acids help break down the toxins in your body and eggs are also rich in vitamin B.

Seltzer Drinks

Keep a stock of these fabulous fizzy friends in your medicine cabinet, easy to make, just add water wait for the powder or tablet to dissolve and glug back to feel refreshed and raring to go in no time. (I’m not one to encourage bad manners but a good belch as you finish the glass can add to the satisfaction!)

Although often packed with sugar to help the energy boost, sports drinks are full of electrolytes which help your body recover and repair itself more quickly.

Coconut Water

Health gurus are going crazy for everything coconut these days, from oil to the raw fruit. Coconut water is packed with natural electrolytes and vitamins and is a good alternative to sugary sports drinks.

Ginger Ale

Ginger is renowned as a stomach settler so either knock back a glass or two of store-bought fizzy ginger ale, or better still, grate a chunk of fresh ginger into water, add some lemon juice (and honey if you prefer it sweet) and you will be up and at it in no time.

Black Coffee

The jury is out on whether or not drinking copious amounts of the brown stuff can help a hangover, it may help at first but the subsequent caffeine hangover can feel just as bad.

Hopefully the ‘remedies’ above will help you feel better the morning after the night before but remember, abstinence or drinking in moderation is the only real way to prevent a hangover! 41

CHICKEN MILANESE

Looking for a quick, simple supper? Well Chicken Milanese is just that. I always make extra, as the chicken chopped up is brilliant in a Caesar Salad. I like to make the tomato sauce a day in advance, as it gives the sauce time to develop and just has that extra flavour. The sauce can also be spiced up with some Tabasco and or herbs if you wish. All you need to do is heat up while you are cooking the chicken.

Ingredients: • Packet of bread crumbs available in Mercadona, Consum etc. • 2 large eggs. • 1 packet of pre-sliced raw chicken or turkey, available in Mercadona, Consum etc. • 1 Can of chopped tomatoes. • 1 Bay leaf (optional) • Worcestershire sauce or Soy sauce

Enjoy!

Method: 1. Beat eggs and place in a flat dish or plate. 2. Place quantity of breadcrumbs in a flat dish/plate. 3. Have separate plate ready for assembled chicken. 4. Dip piece of chicken in into the egg and then coat chicken in breadcrumbs, place chicken onto plate, ready for cooking, repeat until you have enough chicken for supper. 5. Heat frying pan with a little butter and olive oil and fry chicken over a low-med heat for 10-12 minutes, until cooked through, turning as necessary. 6. For the sauce – l suggest making this in advance. Put the can of tomatoes into a saucepan, add a few splashes of worcestershire sauce/Soy sauce, add bay leaf and season to taste. Heat through on low heat and serve sauce either under chicken or over the chicken. 7. Serve the dish with seasonal veg , salad, some couscous or rice.

Danny Bhoy Danny Bhoy (born Danni Chaudhry) was born in Moffat, Scotland, as one of four children. His father is of Indian descent and his mother is Scottish. His stage name actually stems from his grandma’s nickname for him, Danny Boy, but due to a performing dog already having that name registered with Equity, he added the H to Bhoy. He began stand up in 1998 after going to see his first comedy show at the Edinburgh Festival. A year later, he won The Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award, Britain’s biggest competition for comedy newcomers. In 2001, Danny took his first full-length solo show to the Edinburgh Festival, where, within a week, he had sold out his entire three-week run, and added extra shows to cope with the demand for tickets. “The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar, a country where you cannot drink alcohol. Kevin Bridges Kevin Andrew Bridges (born 13 November 1986) is a Scottish stand-up comedian. He has appeared on many comedy television shows including Would I Lie to You?, Have I Got News for You and has performed at Live at the Apollo. Bridges began performing on the small stage when he left school shortly after turning 17, doing stand-up comedy gigs at The Stand Comedy Club in Glasgow and then throughout the UK. Bridges said he was inspired to try stand up after reading Frank Skinner’s autobiography. At 18, he reached the final of Channel 5’s So You Think You’re Funny competition at the Edinburgh Fringe. He performed at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. “I saw a sign yesterday that said, “Have you seen this man?” with a little picture of the criminal and a number to call. I was bored so I rung them up and said, “No, I haven’t.” “I always hated the first day back at school after the summer holidays. All of the rich kids would have a suntan and a new school bag. 2016 Perth International Thorbjorn Olesen

With January and February a traditionally quiet time for major golf tournaments, lets travel further away and look at the Perth International at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth, Australia, taking place from the 25th to the 28th February The Perth International returns to The Race to Dubai when in 2016 when it takes place at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in February, with the tri-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia. Australian Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the event had moved from October to February 25th-28th to help attract the best possible field. “For the past three years the Perth International has been held in October, but hosting it earlier in the year means the tournament will now be staged on the back of events in the Middle East and South East Asia, and that will help attract a stronger

58

player field,” Dr Hames said. “It’s also a great time of year to showcase Western Australia, our fantastic weather and golfing amenities.” The Minister said the Perth International would be the only golf tournament in Australia to receive tri-sanctioning from the PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour.

The Perth International is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia. Dr Hames said hosting international sporting events of this calibre was part of the Government’s strategy to grow the value of tourism from the current $8.7 billion to $12 billion by 2020.

“The added endorsement will further increase the depth of the field and attract players from all three tours,” he said. “The tournament has seen some of the world’s best golfers compete in WA including

“The Perth International provides significant exposure for the State by generating tens of millions of dollars of media coverage across Australia and in key international markets such as China, Indonesia, Germany, the UK and the US,” he said.

Dustin Johnson, Victor Dubuisson and golf Major winners Charl Schwartzel, Jason Dufner and Geoff Ogilvy, and we look forward to attracting another exciting line-up of golfing celebrities next year.”

“In addition it attracts tens of thousands of spectators, which helps to promote Perth as a vibrant and diverse global city.”

WANT LOWER SCORES? How to drive the ball further. At some point every golfer gets the itch to hit the ball farther, and why not? Adding a bit more distance can help shorten your approach shots and improve your ability to hit greens in regulation (plus it feels great to really give one a ride). The problems begin to creep into the picture when you start give up consistency for those extra yards. These issues predominately arise from the belief that hitting the ball farther means you need to be stronger or swing harder—a common misconception. If you haven’t already figured this out on your own you’ll soon find out that doing so increases your margin of error, thus resulting in a hook, a slice, and all sorts of other messy shots. With that said, here are five easy and more effective tips to help you hit the ball farther. Give these a try the next time you hit the range for a practice session:

Watch your grip First, try adjusting your left hand (for righties) a bit inward so that your knuckles are facing your target. This hand position will better allow you to drive through the ball at impact. Also be mindful to not over-squeeze the grip. Instead try treating it as if you’re holding a tube of toothpaste and just slightly squeezing some out of the container.

Move your hips Get your hips involved! Ever wonder how some of the smallest players on the PGA TOUR drive the ball so far? Well, it’s all in the hips! Keep that in mind when you start your downswing. Using the hips as a trigger to pull the club through your swing (rather than trying to push it through with your arms) allows you to use your twisting momentum to generate a faster club head speed. Think of it as using your hips to release all of that torque you built up twisting into your backswing.

Shift your weight Transferring your weight is also very important. At the peak of your backswing, roughly 60% of your weight should be on your back leg. After you pivot through the ball with your hips and hands about 85-90% percent of your weight should shift to your front leg.

Keep that lead arm straight Did you know that the straighter you keep your lead arm (left arm for righties) the longer the ball will travel? This is essential in adding distance. With a straight lead arm, you’re creating a longer distance for the clubhead to travel in order to get to the ball (at impact). A longer swing usually results in more distance on your shot. Keeping your lead arm straight will also help you get that proper 90 degree angle with your wrist during your backswing (another key to gaining distance).

Turn your hands over Lastly, make sure you finish your swing strong by turning right hand over at the correct moment. The key is to snap (some refer to it as a “whoosh”) your right hand (for righties) through the ball at impact in order to ramp up that extra club speed which will in turn increase the flight distance of the ball.

Keep the garden tidy. Cut back shrubs and palms, clean the patio and furniture, cut the grass, sweep the terraces and ensure the pool is well maintained. Make any minor repairs necessary – holes in walls, broken door knobs, cracked tiles, torn or threadbare carpets. Many buyers want to move in without making changes, so allow for this. Deal with any bad smells as these are the single biggest turn off for prospective buyers. Don’t just cover them up, fix the source of the smell. Clear drains, wash bins, open windows and deal with cigarette smoke and pet smells. De-clutter but don’t completely de-personalise. The fewer things there are in the home, the larger it will look, so remove some knickknacks and excess furniture to create more space. But don’t make it too clinical, leave some personality to make it feel homely.

New build - Modern villa for sale located in area of Pinomar, Javea.

Enhance your home’s kerb appeal. This could mean adding new plants or flowers, painting the front door or replacing the mailbox. Prospective buyers form an opinion the mo-ment they spot the home. Driving into the driveway and walking into that front door sets the expectations - make them good ones! Price it realistically. Sellers often think they should start the asking price high and then lower it later if the house fails to sell. But that can result in a slower sale – sometimes even at a lower price. If the price is too high, many buyers and their agents will stay away, assuming you’re not serious selling or you’re unwilling to negotiate. Use good estate agents – ones with a robust marketing portfolio and excellent local knowledge. When they bring clients, let them do their job – they know how to handle tricky questions and to present the property in its best light. Easy viewing access is essential. Homes that don’t get shown don’t get sold! Serious buyers often want to view with a moment’s notice and if it is too difficult to view your house agents will have to show properties that are easy to get into. Leaving a key with a centrally located agent that is open all day prevents these missed opportunities.

OUT WITH THE OLD - IN WITH THE NEW! Having bid a fond farewell to Andrea, who has joined her husband to help run his business; and Sarah who has left to gain some experience with new- construction sales. We were shocked but not too surprised to be told on 31st of December that our Office Manager and our Sales Girl were leaving to set up their own agency! However within the hour we had come to terms with this and saw a great opportunity for us to review our entire operation, revitalize our team, and take advantage of the overwhelming response we had received, initially to replace Andrea, to rejuvenate the team, with just Linda, Julia and I continuing the old team. Joining us for 2016 are Isabella, heading up our sales, ably assisted by Julia and a new Sarah who only moved to Spain a few weeks earlier and has bought a villa with us, who has worked for two estate agencies in England, for a number of years. Tanya ably replaces Sarah; Dawn, brings some worldly experience, having spent three years in India, and Karen who works mornings with our accountants, is carrying out a similar role for us in the afternoons.

Overall, this has increased the might of our workforce, which is already paying dividends, with us having just completed a record January for sales! It is to her great credit that Linda, together with Julia’s assistance, has been able to full train five new girls in just four weeks, also a measure of the intellectual power, strength and enthusiasm of our new team. In addition the whole mood and atmosphere of the office has been transformed. We are all looking forward to 2016 as a watershed year, having prospered and established ourselves as one of Moraira’s leading agents, during nine years of trading against the commercial ‘wind and tide’. With the more stable market which now seems to be establishing its self, we are looking forward to a resurgent year ahead.

The Team: left to right: Karen, Isabella, Dawn, Sarah, Linda, Tanya, Chris & Julia.

We take this opportunity to wish all our colleagues, collaborating agents, clients and friends a very healthy, happy and successful New Year!
