MUHAMM Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer, widely regarded as one of the most significant sporting figures in the 20th century. From early in his career, Ali was known as an inspiring, controversial and polarizing figure both inside and outside the ring. His death in June of this year saddened us all as he was truly a legend.

Clay was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and began training when he was 12 years old. At 22, he won the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston in an upset in 1964. Shortly after that, Clay converted to Islam, changed his “slave” name to Ali, and gave a message of racial pride for African Americans and resistance to white domination during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. In 1966, two years after winning the heavyweight title, Ali further antagonized the white establishment by refusing to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was eventually arrested, found guilty of draft evasion charges and stripped of his boxing titles. He successfully appealed in the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned his conviction in 1971. By that time, he had not fought for nearly four years—losing a period of peak performance as an athlete. Ali’s actions as a conscientious objector to the war made him an icon for the larger counterculture generation. Ali remains the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion; he won the title in 1964, 1974, and 1978. Between February 25, 1964, and September 19, 1964, Ali reigned as the heavyweight boxing champion. Nicknamed “The Greatest”, he was involved in several historic boxing matches. Notable among these were the first Liston fight, three with rival Joe Frazier, and “The Rumble in the Jungle” with George Foreman, in which he regained titles he had been stripped of seven years earlier. Ali retired from boxing in 1981. At a time when most fighters let their managers do the talking, Ali, inspired by professional wrestler “Gorgeous George” Wagner, thrived in, and indeed craved, the spotlight, where he was often provocative and outlandish.

THE

GREATEST

MAD ALI RUMBLE IN THE

JUNGLE In March 1966, Ali refused to be inducted into the armed forces. He was systematically denied a boxing license in every state and stripped of his passport. As a result, he did not fight from March 1967 to October 1970—from ages 25 to almost 29—as his case worked its way through the appeals process before his conviction was overturned in 1971. During this time of inactivity, as opposition to the Vietnam War began to grow and Ali’s stance gained sympathy, he spoke at colleges across the nation, criticizing the Vietnam War and advocating African American pride and racial justice. On August 12, 1970, with his case still in appeal, Ali was granted a license to box by the City of Atlanta Athletic Commission, thanks to State Senator Leroy R. Johnson. [45] Ali’s first return bout was against Jerry Quarry on October 26, resulting in a win after three rounds after Quarry was cut. A month earlier, a victory in federal court forced the New York State Boxing Commission to reinstate Ali’s license. [46] He fought Oscar Bonavena at Madison Square Garden in December, an uninspired performance that ended in a dramatic technical knockout of Bonavena in the 15th round. The win left Ali as a top contender against heavyweight champion Joe Frazier. Ali and Frazier’s first fight, held at the Garden on March 8, 1971, was nicknamed the “Fight of the Century”, due to the tremendous excitement surrounding a bout between

two undefeated fighters, each with a legitimate claim as heavyweight champions. Veteran boxing writer John Condon called it “the greatest event I’ve ever worked on in my life”. The bout was broadcast to 35 foreign countries; promoters granted 760 press passes. Adding to the atmosphere were the considerable pre-fight theatrics and name calling. Ali portrayed Frazier as a “dumb tool of the white establishment”. “Frazier is too ugly to be champ”, Ali said. “Frazier is too dumb to be champ.” Ali also frequently called Frazier an “Uncle Tom”. Dave Wolf, who worked in Frazier’s camp, recalled that, “Ali was saying ‘the only people rooting for Joe Frazier are white people in suits, Alabama sheriffs, and members of the Ku Klux Klan. I’m fighting for the little man in the ghetto.’ Joe was sitting there, smashing his fist into the palm of his hand, saying, ‘What the f*ck does he know about the ghetto?’” Ali began training at a farm near Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1971 and, finding the country setting to his liking, sought to develop a real training camp in the countryside. He found a five-acre site on a Pennsylvania country road in the village of Deer Lake, Pennsylvania. On this site, Ali carved out what was to become his training camp, the camp where he lived and trained for all the many fights he had from 1972 on to the end of his career in the 1980s.

The Monday night fight lived up to its billing. In a preview of their two other fights, a crouching, bobbing and weaving Frazier constantly pressured Ali, getting hit regularly by Ali jabs and combinations, but relentlessly attacking and scoring repeatedly, especially to Ali’s body. The fight was even in the early rounds, but Ali was taking more punishment than ever in his career. On several occasions in the early rounds he played to the crowd and shook his head “no” after he was hit. In the later rounds—in what was the first appearance of the “rope-a-dope strategy”— Ali leaned against the ropes and absorbed punishment from Frazier, hoping to tire him. In the 11th round, Frazier connected with a left hook that wobbled Ali, but because it appeared that Ali might be clowning as he staggered backwards across the ring, Frazier hesitated to press his advantage, fearing an Ali counter-attack. In the final round, Frazier knocked Ali down with a vicious left hook, which referee Arthur Mercante said was as hard as a man can be hit. Ali was back on his feet in three seconds. Nevertheless, Ali lost by unanimous decision, his first professional defeat. Ali’s characterizations of Frazier during the lead-up to the fight cemented a personal animosity toward Ali by Frazier that lasted until Frazier’s death. Frazier and his camp always considered Ali’s words cruel and unfair, far beyond what was necessary to sell tickets. Shortly after the bout, in the TV studios of ABC’s Wide World of Sports during a nationally televised interview with the two boxers, Frazier rose from his chair and wrestled Ali to the floor after Ali called him ignorant.

SOLARENERGY THE FACTS ABOUT INSTALLING A SOLAR ENERGY GRID-CONNECTED ELECTRICITY SYSTEM Electricity bills have increased by an average of 20% each year over the past 5 years and the cost is likely to increase by similar amounts over the next few years.

How does a solar grid-connected system work?

proposal was against European Union directives and was met with enormous opposition. On the 9th October 2015 the government updated this draft proposal stating that grid connected A well designed solar system will last solar installations that produce less for 25-30 years. Both the solar panels than 10kW per hour will not be taxed. and the inverters used by Solar in Spain This is excellent news for home owners. are guaranteed for 25 years.

Does solar energy only work Where can I find out more information? capture on sunny days?

Solar electricity systems the sun’s energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field. The PV modules generate DC electricity - or Direct Current - sending it to an inverter. The inverter transforms the electricity from DC to AC (Alternating Current) for ordinary household needs. This system allows the solar electricity to be used as it is being generated.

Do I need permission from Iberdrola to install a system in my property? Yes . This is very important and must not be overlooked. Permissions need to be obtained before the installation takes place. Every grid-connected electricity system needs authorisation from both Iberdrola and the Spanish Government. Iberdrola is currently issuing fines of up to €30,000 for unauthorised installations.

8

What is the life expectancy of a solar grid-connected electricity system?

No. These cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate electricity on cloudy days. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced.

What happens to the electricity that is produced but not used?

Solar in Spain has been in business on the Costa Blanca for 13 years. They complete all the paperwork for its clients and is one of the few companies that actually ensures that their installations comply fully with the law. Their office and showroom is in the Pedreguer Industrial Estate, just off the N332.

JOY Joy is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film, written and directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano, a self-made millionaire who created her own business empire. Mangano was a divorced mother with three children in the early 1990s when she invented the Miracle Mop and became an overnight success, after which she patented many other products, often selling on the Home Shopping Network and QVC. The film is a semi-fictional and inspirational portrayal of how Mangano overcame personal and professional obstacles to rise to the top. Joy received a wide theatrical release on December 25, 2015, and is distributed by 20th Century Fox. It earned mixed reviews from critics, who praised Lawrence’s performance but criticized the writing and pace of the film, particularly the first half. Lawrence received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her performance. Joy was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, among other accolades. Though it’s never mentioned by name in the movie (it is quickly shown on a TV screen graphic during the mop’s initial unsuccessful QVC appearance), the real Joy Mangano invented the self-wringing Miracle Mop, which was her first 10

success. The Joy true story reveals that she possesses more than 100 patents and trademarks for her inventions, which also include the velvet-covered Huggable Hangers (designed to prevent clothes from slipping onto the floor) and My Little Steamer (a handheld device for smoothing out wrinkles). She is the founder and president of Ingenious Designs, LLC, and as of 2010, her inventions were bringing in roughly $150 million in annual sales via HSN. Was the Miracle Mop really a flop when it was first pitched on QVC?

Yes, but like in the movie, Joy appearing on the network to pitch it herself is what saved the day. She made her first appearance in 1992 and sold a whopping 18,000 units in less than 30 minutes. In under a decade, the mops were raking in $10 million a year in sales. During that time, she added more inventions to the lineup, including Forever Fragrant air freshener products, Huggable Hangers, and Performance Platforms shoes.

Things to do...Places to see... We’ve covered the resort of the Sierra Nevada range for the winter time in a previous issue but why not take a trip up there in the warmer months for something other than skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing or snowball fights!

THE REGION

LAS ALPUJARRAS

The Sierra Nevada, meaning “snowy range” in Spanish, is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, the peak called “Mulhacén” which stands at 3,479m high.

During the summer months, the hidden valleys of the Alpujurran foothills are alive with almond groves and fruit trees bearing figs, pomegranates and apricots. Wild flowers spring up beside the paths and tracks, the scent of wild herbs fill the air. Between gushing streams and green gorges, whitewashed villages cling to steep mountainsides; rugged, weather-beaten hamlets where life has carried on as it has done for centuries. Famous for their ham, there are pigs in places you would normally see a mountain goat. This is ideal walking terrain covering some of Spain’s most picturesque and traditional countryside whilst high above the Sierra, vultures and eagles keep a beady eye on what’s going on below.

Come sun or snow, the Sierra Nevada is the place to take a walk on the wild side. Europe’s second highest mountain range after the Alps, the Sierra Nevada is home to wild, rugged mountains, fertile valleys and forests of oak and chestnut. Just a few miles inland from the Costa del Sol you would be forgiven for thinking you were on a different planet. The area closest to the coast is Las Alpujarras, a rural landscape of terraced fields, rolling hills and orchards. Rising out of the foothills is the Sierra Nevada, the snow-capped range that towers above the surrounding country. Mountain, rolling valley, oak forest - one thing is for sure, this is prime walking holiday territory. With its ancient villages, sublime views and remote isolation, the Sierra Nevada is the place to get away from it all.

12

SUM

The area was one of the Moors last strongholds in Spain, and this lives on in the unique landscape and architecture. The terraced farmlands are irrigated by an ancient system of channels bringing down melting snow from the Nevada, creating a high-altitude oasis of greenery. The villages, clusters of boxed shaped houses with flat clay roofs, would look equally at home in Morocco with their traditional Berber architecture.

MMER FORGET SNOW, VISIT THE SIERRA NEVADA IN

THE RESORT

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Sierra Nevada Ski and Mountain resort has an attractive programme of activities centred primarily around nature and sports tourism. With an average temperature of 20º C, is the ideal place for all kinds of outdoor activities.

Across the main Sierra itself and surrounding outliers are thrilling routes of all types, with tecnical singletrack and easy stretches on forestry roads. Making it even more special is the fact that this region of Spain is still wild, not a manufactured bikers’ playground. There are no ski lifts and no coach parties: just you, the bike and the trail.

You can take part in language courses, children’s summer camps, sports competitions, etc. The departure point for active tourism activities is the recreational and sports area of Fuente del Mirlo Blanco, which offers its guests a range of facilities: Roller-sled (Wiegan), bike slalom, slides, children’s park with bouncing castles, trampolines, zip-lining, iceskating on a rink with ecological ice, etc. The young ones will love these activities... and so will their parents. In order to provide services for the wide range of activities in summer, 2, 3, and 4-star hotels are open all year round, as well as restaurants, some shops, a chemist’s and a modern clinic. The indoor car park is also open and is free in summer. The resort also operates a cable car and chair lift for all the summer activities, and for visitors to enjoy a pleasant trip up the ski lifts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Most of the mountain bike routes are concentrated on the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada: these valleys are collectively known as Las Alpujarras. Prime locations in the western Alpujarra include the south-facing valleys of the Rio Lanjarón above Lanjarón, and the Rio Chico above the large town of Órgiva at 420 metres in the Guadalfeo valley. A little further east, and higher, are the lush gorges of the Rio Poqueira around Pampineira, Bubion and Capileira, as well as the trails around Trevélez (at 1,476 metres the highest village in mainland Spain and famed for its cured ham) which lead down to Pitres, Altabeitar and Ferreirola. Many trails run from around 2,000 metres altitude down to around 500 metres.

QI Following Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebrations recently, we have researched some interesting facts about Queens.

Multitasking

The Queen is the only person who can put on a tiara with one hand while walking down stairs.

Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots (1542–1587) became Queen of Scotland at six days old, after her father James V died. As a young woman she liked to dress up as a stable lad and go out dancing in Edinburgh. She had four ladies in waiting, all called Mary (Mary Fleming, Mary Seton, Mary Beaton and Mary Livingston), spoke seven languages (Scots, English, Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and Italian) and was one of the first women to play golf. When she tried to escape to France the keys to Loch Leven castle — where she had been kept prisoner for 19 years by Queen Elizabeth I – were thrown in the loch, where they were found 300 years later. After her execution she was buried in Westminster Abbey. Queen Elizabeth I, whom she never met, was buried beside her.

The Black Queen

Catherine de’ Medici (1519–89), also known as The Black Queen, was the most powerful woman in Europe for more than 40 years. She made broccoli, artichokes, cauliflower and the fork fashionable and pioneered the wearing of perfume and underwear. Her parties were legendary, not least because of the presence of her 80 ladies-in-waiting. At one memorable feast they served supper topless.

Queen Anne’s fan

Ever wondered what you call the gesture of putting your thumb to your nose and wiggling your fingers in an insulting manner? It’s called Queen Anne’s fan (or “cocking a snook”, or “the fivefingered-salute”, or the “coffee-mill” or “pull-bacon”). A study showed it to be Europe’s best-known gesture. It is first recorded under this name when Anne reigned – 1714.

Queen bees

The Queen’s ring

The wedding ring of England is a ring made for the coronation of William IV in 1831. It has been worn at every coronation since except for Queen Victoria’s – her fingers were so slender the ring kept falling off. A smaller ring was made for her but the Archbishop of Canterbury forced it on to the wrong finger during the ceremony. Afterwards, Victoria had to soak her hand in iced water to remove it.

Driving

The Queen is the only person in Britain who can drive without a license or a registration number on her car. 14

Until the late 17th century, queen bees were usually referred to as “kings” (in Henry V, Shakespeare writes that bees “have a king and officers of sorts”). Queen bees are created by a diet of royal jelly. Any worker bee can become a queen if it is fed the special elixir, secreted by glands in the worker bees’ heads. Once hatched the queen controls the colony by a chemical licked off her body by the workers. Known as “queen substance” it inhibits the working of their ovaries and stops them building special queen cells, where a rival might hatch.

Queen rat

Naked mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber) are the only mammals that live in organised colonies like bees and termites. They have a large, fertile female who produces all the offspring (usually 20 at a time). Like the queen bee, she stops the other females from becoming fertile by producing a special pheromone in her urine.

New Harley Davidson Group in Marina Alta

Free Spirits HD is a newly formed social group of Harley Davidson riders living in and around the Marina Alta area. They are an extended family of Harley enthusiasts, with a near 50 strong membership, mainly drawn from the ex-pat community. The group ‘Live To Ride’ in like-minded company through a varied calendar of events and activities. In recent weeks, Free Spirits HD held its first party in Orbeta which included a presentation by the group’s main sponsor, Telitec Connections SL. Additional sponsors of the group include Select Villas of Moraira and California Motorcycles in Olivia.

The Enduring Appeal of Harley-Davidson

In 1903 Harley-Davidson consisted of just four friends in their twenties, all motorcycle fanatics at a time when the only people who owned motorcycles were the seriously rich or those who actually made them. Those four friends could not have foreseen the legacy they would leave. Today, the Harley Owners Group has in excess of 1 million members with many of the Free Spirits HD membership also being part of that worldwide brotherhood.

16

Living The Dream The iconic Harley-Davidson brand still holds a magic and appeal like no other. Harleys look different, sound different, and certainly ride differently to other motorcycles, so much so that the HD community on the Costa Blanca has significantly grown in recent years. Recent biker gatherings in Spain have seen hundreds and in some cases thousands of machines turned out by their owners with a sense of real pride.

Knights Of The Road

Since 2013, the Harley-Davidson community on the Northern Costa Blanca has raised just short of 40,000 euros for the Children of Emaus charity through a number of high profile events. One such fund raising activity was the creation of a Charity Biker Babe Calendar, which profiled ladies from the local area posing with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The 600 calendars flew off the shelves and raised a staggering sum of money. After a 3 year interval the idea is to be repeated.

2017 Charity Biker Babe Calendar Free Spirits HD is currently producing a stylish calendar, which will go on sale in late September. Once again 600 will be produced and self-funded through the generous support of local advertisers. Each calendar will cost 10 euros and will include free entry into a Christmas Charity Draw with 500 euros of prizes to be won. All monies generated from calendar sales will be divided equally and donated to Make A Smile and the Gandia Preventorio children’s home. The perfect Christmas gift.

For further information regarding the Charity Calendar project or membership of Free Spirits HD, then contact Peter Emmett, President, at freespiritshd@gmail.com

Getting tyred?

Its important to understand your tyres capabilities & limitations. Knowing how to read a tyre forms part of the driving test in Spain, which is testament to how important the DGT feel the subject is. We have already said that they are arguably amongst the most important elements of a vehicle, and often the most abused, but sadly, they are often the most neglected.

We want to look specifically at the load capacity of the tyre this time. As the summer holiday season starts, it is quite common for the family car to be loaded up for a long journey cross country, perhaps even across the continent, and the amount of cargo, as well as passengers, often increases compared to our normal daily commute.

It is important that the vehicle´s tyres are of a high quality, not least because of the wear and tear they suffer, investing that little bit more in a tyre could make the difference between life and death.

That is why we have to ensure that the load capacity of the tyre can handle the extra weight we place in the vehicle. Overloaded vehicles quite literally weigh down on the tyres which can increase the risk of uneven wear and the dangers that poses, but also hugely increases the risk of a “blow out”, which in turn could have fatal consequences.

If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample,

“195 / 55 R 16 87V” Here, “195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. There is also the stamp indicating the week number and the year of manufacture.

Sadly, for the average driver, they don´t make it too simple for us to immediately see what the load capacity is, as the number in the code needs to be converted to a weight. In our example, 87V, the tyres can carry a maximum load of 545 kilograms. Keep in mind though, this is the total maximum weight of the vehicle. It also shows why it is important that all the tyres on the vehicle match, as if they are different, the load capacity may be lower. See diagram for reference of load weights.

In our example, the letter “V” refers to a maximum speed of 240 kilometres per hour, but speed limits must be maintained by the road and conditions, rather than the maximum that the tyres can endure.

At Sunset we have already seen the reduction in prices from owners who are taking advantage of the low sterling rate to offer their properties at a reduced price. It gives them a competitive edge with other Euro currency sellers. 2. Other European & Spanish Buyers It is impossible to see the future but I believe the average UK buyer will not be buying a Spanish property in the near future, due to the general uncertainty and the fall in the pound. But all is not lost - only 14.4% of Spanish property sales are by foreign buyers and only 21% of these are British. In reality the British buyers only make up a small percentage of the market.

A disaster or an opportunity for change? by Jo Ivory Like the majority of UK expats/immigrants in Spain I voted to remain and was bitterly disappointed when I heard the result for leave. Selfishly I was really concerned for my business and also felt let down by the UK and the European Union. Fifteen years ago, in my early thirties, I moved to Spain as a European citizen and at no point then was there any talk of a referendum. I now feel the powers that be have moved the goal posts and after working hard, paying my dues, I am now in the position that I am no longer who I thought I was and have no idea if I have the same political and legal rights as I did just a few weeks ago. After hoping there will be another referendum, cursing my compatriots who voted leave for believing a pack of lies, cursing David Cameron for not negotiating or campaigning better to stay in. Just cursing in general and more cursing, I have got it out my system, I have licked my wounds and am ready to move forward. Theresa May says “Brexit is Brexit” so there is no going back. Throughout my life I have always been a “can do” person and with positivity I am now looking forward to how I can re-organise my business and life to cope with the likely changes. I don´t know what these changes will bring and I´m fed up of hearing people with no inside knowledge predicting these changes with phrases like “Nothing will change the Spanish can´t afford to lose the Brits” or on the other side “We´ll be deported and everyone will need visas to travel to Europe”. In reality there will probably be a finishing point somewhere in the middle of these two, but what I´m guessing and this is a guess, is that it is not going to be quick. So we´ll be looking at uncertainty for several years to come. I´ve decided to see what positives I can take from the situation and how I can focus my business to ride the storm, after riding out the recent recession I can ride out Brexit too!

At Sunset we are working on new marketing strategies to attract Spanish and other nationality buyers. These buyers could potentially be taking advantage of the British dropping their prices because of the fall in the pound. 3. Rentals Long Term During the downturn in property sales from 2008 - 2014, we saw a surge in long term renting from the British. They were worried about investing in Spain, but still wanted to enjoy and live the lifestyle. I predict this happening again over the next year or so. If you are a property owner, either living here and wanting to return to the UK, or a holiday home owner that wants to sell, long term renting could be an option. Being paid the monthly rental in Euros, which you take back to the UK to help with costs of renting a property there or as a new income stream. Sunset is one of the leading long term rental agents in Javea and Moraira. We have been established in this market for over 6 years with an unprecedented reputation. We have the skills and the knowledge to ensure we can offer owners the best financial return and security for their Spanish property. Holiday Rentals For many years holiday rentals have been successful in this area. Through ups and downs in the economy people from Northern Europe have always wanted to come to Spain on holiday. If the sales market drops and you own a property in Spain, then you can turn this property in to a great investment asset to generate income. Sunset is now offering property management for holiday rentals for the 2017 season. We have a comprehensive multi-level management service, with a team of experienced property managers. Sunset is working with landlords and sellers every day to find the best way to market and create wealth from their property. Come and talk to with us for fresh ideas on how we can help and make a positive influence in a difficult time.

The positives to the real estate industry & how Sunset will position itself in the changing market place. 1. The low sterling rate British owners wanting to sell and return to the UK can reduce the price of their property if the exchange rate stays low, making the price of property to Euro currency buyers more attractive and allowing these British owners to return to the UK. There are also reports that Brexit could affect the British property market, this could mean returning to the UK with a strong euro giving them a great choice of reduced price property in the UK. 22

ION T A N I T S E D .. REPORT.

The Big Manzana

The most highly populated city in the United States, New York is one of the most popular long-haul city destinations in the world.

Central Park A melting pot of cultures, more than 800 languages are spoken throughout the city and for centuries the city’s ports have been the main point of immigration for the United States.

This is also the home of the famous Bloomingdales department store which was founded in the late 1800s and became the most popular department store in the United States.

Originally a heavily industrialised area New York is now the heart of the world’s financial market with billions of dollars being traded on the stock exchange every day. The big apple once had a reputation for being home to criminal gangs and Mafia with some areas classed as no-go for fear of robberies or muggings. Former mayor, Rudi Giuliani, famously cleaned up the city, added some 7,000 extra police officers and reduced crime drastically.

South of Manhattan is Canal Street, famed for its outlet stores and great for bargain hunters.

Those no-go areas, such as Hell’s Kitchen and the meat-packing district are now extremely sought after with designer boutiques, famous restaurants and high property prices. New York is a great place to visit for a long or short breaks, accommodation is plentiful and varied in price. The whole of Manhattan has something to offer in the way of sightseeing, restaurants and shops but a great location for any visit is Midtown which is more or less in the middle, giving easy access across the whole ‘island’. Shopaholics can’t go far wrong on Lexington Avenue where designer shops can be found alongside regular high street names. 24

China Town is well worth a visit to pick up gifts to take home and enjoy an authentic Chinese meal in one of the many restaurants. Central Park is the heart of the city, 3.4 square kilometres of green space with a zoo, skating rink, cafés, boating lake and memorials. Well worth a visit is Strawberry Fields, dedicated to John Lennon who was murdered outside his apartment building opposite the park. The park is a perfect place to sit and relax and take in the buzz of the city and if you want to try to keep fit during your visit, the park will satisfy even the most dedicated jogger and bicycles can be hired at many locations. A great way to see the whole city is on one of the many open

top bus tours where you can hop on and hop off or just sit on the top deck, snapping photos as you pass through the streets lined with Skyscrapers, with their mirrored walls gleaming against the sky. Take some time out to visit the 9/11 Memorial, a poignant reminder of the tragic events that won’t be forgotten on September 11 2001. The ‘survivor tree’ stands at the centre of the memorial, the Callery pear tree was found amongst the rubble with charred and broken branches, it was taken to the parks department, brought back to life and stands a reminder of those who lost theirs on that day. Bronze parapets surround the memorial, inscribed with the names of the victims, this is located next to the ‘twin pools’ allowing a serene place for people to view the memorial. For a birds-eye view of the city, take the elevator to the viewing platform at the Empire State building, equally impressive day or night. For a special treat, book theatres tickets for a show in Times Square, followed by dinner in one of the many sophisticated restaurants, but make reservations in advance. A way to see the city from a different angle is on one of the many boat tours along the Hudson river or go to Battery Park and take the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. From here you can get a glimpse of the view seen by European immigrants arriving to a new life in America. For some culture, New York has endless museums including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMO) and the Guggenheim museum (below).

Wall St. The Wall Street walking tour takes you to the heart of the financial world and gives you the history of this everchanging centre of trade. Sports fans will enjoy a trip to the Yankee Stadium where you can take a tour of the famous sports stadium. The botanical gardens are nearby and is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle. There are many ways to travel around the city, buses are frequent and easy to use and the metro system is one of the best in the world with stops close to all major attractions. Taxis are plentiful and usually price controlled or download the ‘Uber’ app as an alternative way to travel. Hotels come in a massive range of prices and standards but be aware rooms are usually smaller than we are used to in Europe. Bookings can be made on portals such as booking.com or hotels.com Air B & B is a new way of finding accommodation and can be very cost-effective. You can choose to stay in a private room in a shared house or opt for a fully private apartment or house. This is a great way to see the city and live like a local. Since the new motorway opened from Almeria to Malaga, travelling to the US has never been easier with Malaga airport a new viable travel option. Air Europa flies daily to JFK airport in New York with prices as low as 500 euros.

La Sufrida 2016 (The Suffering) The “ La Sufrida” Sportif ( The Suffering ) The pain in Spain as it is more commonly called is a very long, hard cyclo-sportif in the Spanish Andalucian mountain range covering a distance of 205kms with 5000m of vertical ascent and is one of Spain’s biggest and toughest Sportifs and usually takes place on the first Saturday of June every year. The route starts and finishes in the picturesque town of El Gastor. Over 205kms, cyclists are pushed to their limits as the combination of a long route, the temperature and the tough Andalucian mountain climbs takes their toll. Gary and Martyn left Quesada on a warm Friday morning to travel 6 hours south to El Gastor the headquarters of La Sufrida. When they arrived at the sport centre they met Oscar Pajares who was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Spanish Legion which is the equivalent of the French foreign Legion. For 18 years he has organized Ultra marathons and Ultra sportifs which are not for the faint hearted. This year’s course was 205km with 5000m of climbing which he calls his best route to date, only a handful of the entrants are from outside Spain and Oscar made us feel very welcome. Oscar has arranged a brutal challenge and knows that 50% of the starters will not make it to the finish line. The Suffering starts in the picturesque hilltop village of El Gastor where potted geraniums spill from most balconies and windows. Martyn and I arrive at the start line at 7am and there are already 100 of us assembled ready for the off. The PA system starts and one of the riders starts singing a soprano by Pavarotti which gets a round of applause by everyone waiting to go.

26

As if the distance and elevation aren’t fearsome enough, there are very strict cut-off times, the next 8-9 hours are going to be a fine balance between keeping something in reserve and avoiding being eliminated at one of the regular checkpoints. Before we start Martyn and I have thoroughly scrutinized the route card to ensure we do not get lost and that we know where the water stops are. It soon becomes clear that Oscar has organized a very tough route, however he has made it as enjoyable as possible by providing water stops every 25km should you wish to take advantage of them. These water stops were well staffed and the volunteers came to you with sandwiches, energy bars, fruit and coke to save you leaving your saddle. It was certainly one of the best organized, slickest and friendliest sportifs that we have participated in. Oh – and the toughest. We started sharp at 8am and the first test came after 18km this was a 12km climb at an average grade of 7% to Puerto De Las Palomas. This climb was relentless and was switchback after switchback, after switchback, however the views on the way up were absolutely spectacular. Once at the top we had a fantastic ride downhill at approx 70kmph to the town of Grazalema, after which we emerged into a fantastic valley, by this time the riders had all thinned out to groups of 4 or 5. The roads were fantastic but not closed, the Guardia Civil motorcyclists and volunteers did an excellent job of stopping oncoming traffic and manning the junctions, we passed through village after village after village with most of the population cheering us on, they were shouting Animo, Animo which means come-on, come-on and was an encouragement to the riders. Everyone that we spoke to at the registration and at the start of the race was concerned about the dreaded wall of

Monte Corto, this comes after 107km and is 4.8km long. It has a large section of false flat in the middle which lowers to an average gradient of 5% but the gradients before and after are a nightmare, it is 24% on the lower section and 23% at the top. Many people resorted to zig-zagging or getting off and walking at this point.

We met some great people during this event, including an 11 man team from Johnstone in Scotland who every year take part in a cycle event, they have done Majorca, Ventoux, Marmotte, Paris Roubaix to name but a few, however they all said that this was the toughest event that they have ever done so far.

After the wall at Monte Corto, it was approx 15km back to El Gastor where you had to cross the start/finish line and tell the organizers that you wished to continue. 50% of the starters who had said that they would do the full route pack in at this point, this is the 133km mark. Martyn and I crossed the line and pushed on to complete the full course.

Well done to everyone who managed to complete the course as I know that there were many who didn’t due to fatigue and exhaustion and also to Oscar and his team who did an excellent job of organizing this event, I would recommend it to anyone who is fit enough to take up the challenge.

We climbed up and out of the village to applause from the spectators and proceeded to the next check point , 155km mark, by this time Martyn had blown a gasket and decided d to call it a day, the paramedics checked his blood d pressure and heartbeat, he was then told that he could no o longer continue. Martyn was absolutely devastated and d so was I. I left Martyn in capable hands and continued on n my own to the next checkpoint which was at the Spanish h Legionaires Barracks where my race card was stamped to o allow me to continue to the end.

This was a great experience not just the race but the atmosphere and just been amongst other like minded individuals all with the same objective. Gary and Lynn are available at Cyclogical in Quesada Monday to Friday from 9.30am – 5.30pm and Saturdays from 10am – 2pm to assist and advise you on all your cycling requirements.

The next 45kms were extremely hard as the temperature e had risen to 32 degrees, however now that I was on my y own I passed bike after bike and got to the finish line in n just under 9 hours, where I was greeted by my mate e Martyn who was recovered and waiting for me to finish h with a beer. Martyn was really pleased with his effort and did reallyy well despite the heat and exhaustion taking over, I wass chuffed to bits to stand on the podium and receive my y lump of granite which has the seal of the Spanish Legion n embedded mbedded on it.

There are no hidden tricks in Modern Psychological Treatments. Panic Attacks, Anxieties, Depression, Anger, Phobias, OCD etc.

Modern approaches of psychological treatments are structured, transparent and focussed on a long-lasting improvement of your situation. Learn the “tools” to help yourself! Modern psychological treatments help you to get back control, self esteem and improvement of your mental balance, no matter if you suffer from anxieties, depression, panic attacks etc. Especially explaining with transparency the way how a psychological treatment works, clears the fog of mental imbalance and helps you to understand that it is possible to gain back the quality of life. In a next step, you learn how to self observe and analyse the irrationality of some thinking patterns and how they influence on mood and/or behaviour. This needs a deep conviction, to be obtained by exercises and practise of questioning and substituting these irrational believes, in order to assess problematic situations in the future more appropriate: The anxious person learns not to worry permanently about the past and the future, but to live in the present. The depressed find the exit out of the mental darkness by breaking unhelpful behaviour and negative thinking patterns. Panic attacks do not scare anymore, once the psychological mechanism is detected. Inappropriate anger can be identified and does not lead into an unwanted behaviour any more. Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour can be analysed and won´t bother anymore. CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE ATENCION PSICOLOGICA. 7 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS

Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

FILM SPEED / ISO

...make some “noise”

The final piece in the Exposure Triangle ISO ratings determine the image sensor’s sensitivity to light, each value of the rating represents a “stop” of light, and each incremental ISO number (up or down) represents a doubling or halving of the sensor’s sensitivity to light. ISO in the digital world You are probably familiar with ISO on film used in a film camera. It’s the ‘speed’ of the film higher ISO values mean you can take photos in lower light. Surprisingly, there is an ISO setting on your Digital camera. And although there is no longer any film, the ISO setting still plays a vital role. ISO indicates your digital camera’s sensitivity to light. The higher the number, the less light is needed to take a photo that is correctly exposed (not too dark or too light). In bright light (like the middle of a sunny day), you’ll normally use ISO 50 or ISO 100. These lowest settings can be used because there is lots of light around. However, in lower light, your camera needs some help. There are two ways of doing this: • Decrease Shutter Speed. With a slower shutter speed, the camera has more time to ‘take in’ the amount of light it needs. Unfortunately though, the slower the shutter speed, the more chance that your images will turn out blurry. (see my last hints and tips page No6) • Increase ISO Rather than decrease the shutter speed, you can increase the ISO. As I said above, this will increase the sensitivity of the camera which means you can get the same shot with less light entering the camera. Thus the shutter speed can be kept low enough to avoid blurry images. As increasing the ISO will increase the shutter speed, a high ISO will also help when taking fast moving sports shots. You’ll get clear, crisp shots with no blur. However, I still recommend you use the lowest ISO possible, but why?

Problems of using a high ISO Using a higher ISO means the camera has less light to work with. Unfortunately this also means that ‘noise’ is introduced into your camera. If you’d like to find out exactly what “noise” is and how to eliminate it, I will be covering this in more detail in a later edition. Your camera’s highest ISO value will produce a lot of noise in your image, so I suggest avoiding them unless the light is so low that you have no other choice. Instead choose the second highest value (second largest number).

Top: A simple guide to ideal ISO. 2nd: An example of Clean & Noisy image. 3rd: A typical LCD display of your cameras ISO settings. Bottom: Often, your ISO can be accessed simply by pressing a button on the rear of your camera. If you have a compact camera you may need to access the menu system to change your setting.

Auto ISO Fortunately most of the time you don’t need to worry about selecting the correct ISO. Most cameras have an “Auto ISO” setting. With Auto ISO, the camera will look at the amount of light in the scene and change the ISO appropriately so that the shutter speed doesn’t get too slow. ISO Values • If you choose to use a manual ISO, what values should you use? • ISO 50-100. Suitable for bright light (like outdoors on a sunny day). • ISO 200. Great for overcast or cloudy days. • ISO 400 and 800. Use these values when the light is getting dim but it is not yet night. • ISO 1600 and above. Use for indoor or night shots. Also useful to freeze the action in sports shots. These values will produce the most noise. NEXT ISSUE: An introduction to COMPOSITION 29

shelf A fan of James Bond? We present 3 books which should be of interest to most, if not all of you.

Bond on Bond by Roger Moore

Sean Connery: A Biography by Christopher Bray

While there have been many actors who have taken on the coveted role of James Bond, the most renowned 007 - and the one with the most panache and charisma - is undoubtedly Sir Roger Moore, KBE.

Sean Connery’s creation of secret agent James Bond invigorated Britain and its cinema, allowing a cash-strapped, moralesapped country in decline to fancy itself still a player on the world stage. But while Bond would make Connery the first actor to command a million dollar-plus fee, the man himself was forever pouring scorn on the fantasies audiences found it increasingly hard to separate him from.

To celebrate the film franchise’s wonderful heritage, Roger Moore has written a book that features all the Bond movies, along with a wonderfully witty account of his own involvement in them. From the girls to the villains, from the cars to the cocktails, from the gadgets to the sets, this beautiful book is illustrated with many iconic images from all the films plus many previously unseen shots. Fabulous fizz While world affairs may bring us down now and again, us Brits are a hardy resolute bunch and can always manage to find a reason to celebrate. No celebration would be complete without a glass of something fizzy to put us in a happy place and get in the mood to party. Fizz used to mean expensive Champagne and while the posh French stuff is perfect for weddings and major events, there are plenty of lower-priced alternatives for those every day celebrations. Living in Spain we are lucky to have one of the most popular sparkling wine-based drinks produced on our doorstep. Cava comes in a sweet (dulce) semi-sweet (semi-sec) or the crisp dry and superbly refreshing Brut. This home-grown fizz, originally produced in Catalonia also comes in white or rose and can easily be found in local supermarkets in a range of prices. Italian sparkling wine used be the butt of many jokes as teenagers supped cheap Lambrusco outside the school disco and bourgeois housewives in the 1980s served up the rather sickly retro tipple at dinner parties across the home counties. While a rose version of Lambrusco has made a comeback and is actually very refreshing served chilled, Italian fizz has moved on.

by Adele Land

Prosecco was first produced in the 16th century and has suddenly become the drink of choice for young and old. Deliciously crisp and light this Italian favourite comes in a sparkling (spumante) or semi-sparkling (frizzante) version and is perfect served as an aperitif, with food such as fish and light mediterranean dishes or as part of a colourful cocktail. Prosecco is the traditional base of the popular cocktail, Bellini, mixed with peach juice or nectar and can easily be a great substitute for the more expensive Champagne in other cocktails such as Kir Royal (add a drop of crème de cassis) or Mimosa with the addition of fresh orange juice. For lovers of red wine, many popular brands are now producing sparkling red wine. Australian makers of Shiraz were one of the first to recognise this gap in the drinks market and this normally more robust grape is transformed into a delicious crisp drink served well-chilled and makes a refreshing change for any celebration. Whether you are celebrating a new job, birthday, anniversary or just high on life, nothing can beat that tantalising sound of the pop of a cork and the feel of the bubbles on your tongue as you raise your glass and say “cheersâ€?.

Grilled Turkey & Strawberry Salad

A mix of sweet and savoury with nuts and leaves this recipe is truly a taste sensation. Quick and easy to make at only around 1 hour including cooking time so get preparing! Serves 8

Ingredients: • 800g boneless turkey breast half • Lemon-Pepper seasoning • 140g fresh baby spinach • 4 slices pancetta • 170g dried cavatappi or gemelli pasta • 1 large yellow sweet pepper, seeded and cut into bite-size strips • 3/4 cup Berry Vinaigrette • 2 cups fresh strawberries, halved • 1/3 cup toasted pine nuts

Enjoy!

Method: Remove skin from turkey, if present. Spread LemonPepper seasoning evenly over turkey. Top with pancetta. Tie at 2-inch intervals with 100-percent-cotton kitchen string. For a charcoal grill, arrange medium-hot coals around a drip pan. Test for medium heat above pan. Place turkey on grill rack over drip pan. Cover and grill for 45 to 55 minutes or until turkey is no longer pink (80 degrees C). (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Adjust for indirect cooking. Cover and grill as above.) Spread spinach on a large serving platter. Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Rinse with cold water to cool; drain again. In a large bowl combine pasta and sweet pepper. Add Vinaigrette; toss to coat. Spoon pasta mixture on top of spinach. Slice turkey. Arrange turkey slices and strawberries on top of salad. Sprinkle with pine nuts.

this edition

The end of the Majors

FOUR NEW MAJOR CHAMPIONS With the last of the Majors just taken place, here is a brief review of all 4 of the major tournaments from The Open, US Open, The Masters and The PGA in an amazing year we have 4 new major champions. The Masters Tournament was the 80th edition of the Masters Tournament, held April 7–10 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Danny Willett won his first major championship, three strokes ahead of runners-up Lee Westwood and defending champion Jordan Spieth. Spieth suffered one of the biggest collapses in Masters history, he led the tournament from the first round and built a five-shot lead going to the back nine on Sunday, but lost six shots to par over the next three holes culminating in a quadruple-bogey on the 12th hole where he hit two balls into Rae’s Creek. Willett shot a bogey-free 67 to overtake Spieth when the leader faltered on the back nine. Willett became the first European to win the Masters since 1999, and the first Englishman to do so since Nick Faldo in 1996. This was the final Masters appearance for former champions Tom Watson and Ian Woosnam. The United States Open Championship

was the 116th U.S. Open, held June 16–19 at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania, a suburb northeast of Pittsburgh. Dustin Johnson won his first major championship. Andrew Landry was a surprise leader after the first round before Johnson led the field in the second. Shane Lowry carded a 65 in the third round to take the overall lead into the final round. Despite a controversial penalty on the 5th green, Johnson took the title and green jacket three strokes ahead of runners-up Lowry, Jim Furyk and Scott Piercy. The Open Championship was the 145th Open Championship, played 14–17 July at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the ninth Open Championship played at the Old Course of Troon, and the fifth since gaining royal status. The Open was won by Henrik Stenson who achieved a record 20 under par. He became the first Scandinavian man to win a major title. The last day was probably the best last round ever seen with Phil Mickelson shooting 65 and Stenson shooting 63. With both players playing brilliant golf.

world number one Jason Day (67) and win on 14 under. American Daniel Summerhays (66) was third on 10 under, while Open champion Henrik Stenson faded with a 71 to finish joint seventh on eight under. “It is surreal, an incredible finish,” said Walker, ranked 48th in the world.

The Open Winner: Henrik Stenson The US Open Winner: Dustin Johnson

American Jimmy Walker won his first major with a one-shot victory at the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol. The 37-year-old closed with a bogey-free three-under-par 67 to hold off Australia’s

Development of Golf Balls The development of golf balls is thought to go back to the early 19th Century when craftsmen in Scotland began to produce the feathery golf ball. As in every type of sport over time, the competitors that take part become fitter, stronger and much more skilful. The same can be said for modern golfing equipment . Of course the ball was no exception in this continued development.

The Wooden Ball

The wooden ball was believed to be the first ever ball used and is recorded as having been developed in Holland. The ball has come a long way since then. Historic records show that long before the great craftsmen of Scotland were making balls, they were importing wooden balls by the boatload. This goes back to as long ago as the 15th century.

The Feathery Golf Ball

Can you imagine playing a round of golf today using a ball made from a piece of old leather stuffed with bird feathers?

Gutta Percha Ball

When you think of trees, it’s the ones that make that clunking sound of ball on wood during your sunday afternoon fourball. However the Gutta Percha ball was actually made from a tree, or should I say the juice from the leaves of a Malaysian tree which produced a latex or liquid rubber solution which was very malleable and could be shaped very easily.

Bramble Ball

The Bramble ball was basically a further advancement in golf ball technology from the Gutta Percha to the Hand Hammered Gutta to the Bramble.

Rubber Ball (Haskell)

If you know your golf then you must have heard the word Haskell mentioned. Now we were reaching the stars in ball construction, here was the most advanced and game saving piece of equipment the golf world had ever seen was born.

The rubber ball was invented by a golfer from the United States, his name was Coburn Haskell and the ball became lovingly known and accepted as the “Haskell” The Haskell was the first ball to use a centre core with rubber wrapped tightly around, it was also the first ball to have an outer cover made of the material known as Balata.

The Modern Day Ball

As you well know, nowadays there are so many different types of balls with different characteristics. Balls now are anything from a 2 piece ball to a 4 piece ball & soon, a 5 piece ball.

So how does ball technology help you the golfer? Golf Ball Aerodynamics i.e. the “Dimples” - Increase lift, reduce drag and affects the distance. Humidity also has a very distinct effect on distance, if the climate you play in is warmer then this means the golf ball is compressed to a higher degree leading to more spring from the clubface. The technical term for this is “moment of inertia” Often represented on the ball as either 80, 90 or 100, the Compression rating of the ball can help you s below: An 80 compression ball has been designed for people with slower swing speeds. This is a softer ball and therefore is a good golf ball for elderly golfers to use. This is because the ball is compressed (squashed) easily even with a short or slower golf swing, yet it still allows to achieve reasonable distance. A 90 compression ball has been designed for the majority of golfers that have neither a very slow or very fast swing. The 100 compression ball however is best used by players that have very powerful and fast golf swings. You will need this type of swing to compress (squash) the ball enough at impact to make it take advantage of potential for hitting the golf ball long distances.

Summer time just like Christmas Ho Ho Ho By Tony Myles

For many golfing holiday-makers arriving in Spain during the hot summer months there is often an element of surprise when they discover that their holiday fortnight coincides with the Spanish Low Season. So often the opposite is true. Parents are frustrated to find that flights and hotels are significantly more expensive on the most popular dates and many risk the wrath of various authorities in order to escape these excess charges. Whilst the courses are crammed with every nationality during the months of March to May and again from midSeptember to the end of November that period in the middle is when Golf course management breathe a sigh and relax. It also means that there are some great bargains to be had, if you enjoy playing with the Spanish sun on your back.

the clear blue skies and uninterrupted sunshine can be a hazard, but these days most players are fully aware of the precautions that are advised when walking about in the open air.

pelota vasca Basque pelota (pilota in the original Basque language also pelota vasca in Spanish, pelote basque in French) is the name for a variety of court sports played with a ball using one’s hand, a racket, a wooden bat or a basket, against a wall (frontis or Fronton) or, more traditionally, with two teams face to face separated by a line on the ground or a net. The roots of this class of games can be traced to the Greek and other ancient cultures. The term pelota probably comes from the Vulgar Latin term pilotta (ball game). It is a diminutive form of the word pila which may relate to a hard linen or leather ball filled with pilus (fur or hair) or to the Latin words for strike or spade and is related to the English word pellet. Today, Basque pelota is played in several countries. In Europe, this sport is concentrated in Spain and France, especially in the Basque Country. The sport is also played in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Cuba. Operated as a gaming enterprise called Jai Alai, it is seen in parts of the U.S. such as Florida, Connecticut, Nevada, and Rhode Island. In Valencia, Valencian pilota is considered the national sport; it is also played in Belgium, North of Italy, Mexico, and Argentina. Since its creation, the International Federation of Basque Pelota has standardised the different varieties into four modalities and fourteen disciplines, with fixed ball weights, rules and court sizes. The four modalities (30 m wall, 36 m wall, 54 m wall and trinquete) admit fourteen 54

disciplines, depending the use of bare hand, leather ball, rubber ball, paleta (pelota paleta), racket (frontennis) and xare. Two of the fourteen disciplines are played by both men and women (frontenis and rubber pelota in trinquete); the other twelve are played only by men. This allows championship play at the international level, and allows the participation of players and teams from around the world using the same rules. Even though there is a lot of protection in the form of helmets and safety glasses, accidents do happen because pelota is a dangerous sport. Being the fastest ball game in the world with the ball easily travelling at 200 km/h, pelota can kill if safety equipment is not used properly or at all. Even though it is rare, every few years a player dies from getting hit in the head. There is, however, criticism about this, since purists might argue that some of the original traits of each particular modality could be lost.

common pets

A pet or companion animal is an animal kept primarily for a person’s company or protection, as opposed to working animals, sport animals, livestock, and laboratory animals, which are kept primarily for performance, agricultural value, or research. The most popular pets are noted for their attractive appearances and their loyal or playful personalities. Pets commonly provide their owners physical and emotional benefits. Walking a dog can supply both the human and pet with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction. Pets can give companionship to elderly adults who do not have adequate social interaction with other people, as well as other people that are living alone. Although there are a wide variety of pets we all keep we have found that these are the most popular animals that people have in their homes.

1. Dogs Dogs make terrific companions. They seem to sense when a master is feeling low, and they will eagerly stick a cold nose into your hand or lick your face. Dogs lie faithfully at your feet and rarely talk back, except when trained to do so. A canine pal will go anywhere that you do without complaining. He will still love you when you forget to fill the feed bowl, fail to pat his head, or fume over a doggy mess. Few friends are as loyal and dedicated as man’s best friend.

2. Cats It is generally believed, can be traced back to the Miacis, a weasel like creature that inhabited the earth some 40 or so million years ago. Not just cat history, but the history of all land dwelling carnivores can be traced back to the Miacis, and that includes dogs!

3. Hamsters Around 1930, zoologist and Professor at the University of Jerusalem Aharoni found a mother and litter of hamsters in the Syrian desert. By the time he got back to his lab, most had died or escaped. The remaining hamsters were given to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where they were successfully bred as Golden Hamsters. The hamsters were shipped to labs all around the world. They arrived in the United Kingdom in 1931, and in 1938 reached the United States. Just about all Golden Hamsters are descended from the original litter found in Syria.

4. Fish Many people are attracted by the quiet and gentle fish as a room mate and companion. Fish make great pets. Watching the fish in an aquarium bring relaxation and are enjoyable for persons of every age and interest. It is almost like you go into a trance when you watch them. Statistics show that collecting fish is the second largest hobby in the world. There are over 25,000 species of fish. Fish keeping dates back to Roman

5. Mice Domesticated mice are descendants of the house mouse or scientific name Mus musculus. The house mouse originated in Asia but now are found all over the world, particularly where people are present. The earliest domesticated mice were kept in the royal palaces of Japan and China. Life expectancy of mice is 1.5-3 years.

6. Guinea Pigs The first guinea pigs were domesticated in about 5000 B.C. by the Incas, but were probably used for food. In the 1600’s, the Spaniards were the first Europeans to see these animals. Dutch merchants brought guinea pigs back from the Americas to Europe, where they became popular pets with aristocrats. In the early 1900’s, British immigrants brought them to the U.S. They are easy to feed and very hardy with few health problems. Since baby guinea pigs are born fully developed, with fur, teeth and their eyes open, they are easy and fun to breed.

7. Birds Birds were first caged for their beauty more than 4,000 years ago. Before that, birds had been associated with human settlements, but not as pets, as dinner. Egyptian hieroglyphics depict what appear to be the first pet birds, including doves and parrots. It is unclear when they were first domesticated, if at all. Whether birds are domesticated or not depends on your definition of the word domestic and the kind of bird you happen to choose as a companion.

8. Snakes In the Western world some snakes, especially docile species such as the ball python and corn snake, are kept as pets. To supply this demand a captive breeding industry has developed. Snakes bred in captivity tend to make better pets and are considered preferable to wild caught specimens. Snakes can be very low maintenance pets, especially in comparison to more traditional species. They require minimal space, as most common species do not exceed five feet in length.

9. Iguanas Iguanas can make phenomenal pets. While you won’t be required to give them long walks outside and potty training will not be an issue that gets you out of bed at 3 a.m., nevertheless there is a host of other concerns pertaining specifically to caring for iguanas responsibly. The three major care areas are going to be food, shelter, and taking care of their physical needs. With proper, attentive care, your iguana may even live up to 20 years.
