HANDY GARDEN HINTS If you would like to place a small plant or shrub close to some trees or something like a conifer hedge, but you can’t because the trees/hedge take all the goodness from the soil, here is what to do. Give your plant/shrub its own environment by putting it in a large plant pot; and then bury the pot! All you will see is the plant/shrub. The cheapest way to make an arc in your garden is to buy some plastic water piping then drive four star pickets into the ground the width of the wire then slip the piping over the star pickets then attach the wire and you have got an arc you can grow grapes passion fruit climbing beans etc on it good luck. Plastic plant labels that have been written on using permanent ink can be brought back to new if they are soaked in a 75% bleach solution for a couple of weeks. Make sure they are thoroughly washed before using again. Alternatively, use a pencil to mark labels, these can then be used again by simply using a rubber (eraser) to remove the name. To stop fencing boards splitting when driving nails, cut the head of a nail of the same size to that being used, put the nail in an electric drill and drill the boards where the nails are to be positioned, hammer in your nails, no more split timber. Mix perlite in with the potting compost in patio planters and hanging baskets. It absorbs moisture when water is plentiful and releases it when the compost is dry. When planting container grown plants, disturb the roots as little as possible so that they continue to benefit from the compost they are grown in. Water as usual after planting. An old hot water bottle filled sparingly with foam rubber chips is a handy kneeling pad for long gardening jobs. A circle of twigs about 500mm high (20ins), provides a better support for border plants than a single stake, and is less obtrusive. Mix perlite in with the potting compost in patio planters and hanging baskets. It absorbs moisture when water is plentiful and releases it when the compost is dry. Water hanging baskets by putting ice cubes on the top, moisture is slowly released as the ice cubes melt. Ensure these do not touch the plants as this may cause damage. To clean white plastic garden furniture break up two dishwasher tablets into a bucket of warm water, mix well, scrub the furniture well and leave for about 15 minutes after which rinse well with clean water and then buff up with a clean, soft, dry cloth. 4

WOMAN INGOLD The newest movie about the quest to recover Nazi-looted art after the Holocaust is The Woman in Gold, which is based on the fascinating true story of Maria Altmann, an Austrian Holocaust survivor who battled the state of Austria for famed painter Gustav Klimt’s perhaps even more famed portrait of her aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer. The portrait, explains Altmann, played by a nearly unrecognisable Helen Mirren, had been stolen off the wall of their home by the Nazis and currently hung in the Belvedere in Vienna. She enlists the help of a charming lawyer (Ryan Reynolds) to help get her family’s masterpiece back from the Austrian government, who claims it as their own. The film is based on Anne-Marie O’Connor’s 2012 book, The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt’s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (or at least it’s based on part of it; the Klimt restitution case comprises just one third of the lengthy historical book). The Woman in Gold looks like a great movie—and will likely garner comparisons to The Monuments Men, the similarly focused film that came out earlier this year. But what’s more astonishing, though, is that two star-studded films about the recovery and restitution of Nazi-looted art will have been released within about a year. The premise of such films is understandably appealing: there’s drama, intrigue, and it’s all based on true events (for what that’s worth). There are the clear good guys and bad guys, but there’s also the grey-area evil—those who stood by in silence, who perhaps profited inadvertently, who loudly claim paintings that didn’t always belong to them. That murky dynamic exists in real life as well, as Jewish heirs to famous paintings by artists like Matisse continue to fight for their own property back. While there have been recent breakthroughs of sorts in such restitution, it’s the kind of story that typically plays out better on the big screen. SPOILER ALERT... but the painting now hangs at the Neue Galerie New York. (There’s also a fine art-inspired Barbie made in Bloch-Bauer’s likeness.) 6

Things to do...Places to see...

VALENCIA... Valencia, a large city on Spain’s eastern coast is well known amongst holidaymakers and expats as an under rated place. For decades, UK visitors to Spain’s Costas only ever holidayed in the typical “bucket and spade” resorts up and down this wonderful region, however an increasing number of people are starting to discover Spain’s cities and what they can offer too. Spain is a big place, far bigger than old Blighty, and it’s sometimes easy to forget that there is so much to see and do in this vast and diverse country and one reason why us Brits can’t get enough of the place. Valencia is but one area and is in some ways, just like any other metropolitan area in Europe, with wide (and traffic clogged roads) and the people themselves, the characters that make up the place, scurrying about on their daily business in the shadow of huge high rise blocks of apartments. Valencia has a mix of old and new buildings, giving it a real special feel of it’s own. From medieval castles and towers, to modernist and art deco architecture, and of course a glut of massive shopping centres and plenty of places to eat and drink too of course! Visiting a city in Spain, as opposed to a resort, allows a glimpse into the real working day of the people and of real life, away from the the normal sights and sounds of a resort vacation in Spain. A lot of people don’t realise just how big the city is and what is on offer here. For example, did you know it has a tube train system like a smaller version of the London Underground? Or do you realise that the holy grail, the cup that Jesus was supposed to have drank from at the last supper, is kept in the cathedral in central Valencia? The city is jam packed full of culture and history, stuff you really want to stick around for, and explore the old lanes and streets as well as the wide tree-lined shopping areas of this truly awesome city! One of the Plazas worth seeing is the Plaza del Reina, or “Queen’s place” in English, located in the old town area and a magnet for more or less each and every tourist that comes here. It’s a great place to hang out, with plenty of places to eat too, however be warned that you will pay top tourist prices here. Eat where the Spanish eat, that’s best, but armed with a good and detailed map so you can find these obscure

places, although in this area you have to be really “in the know” to find a good paella. One of the cities more controversial claims to fame is that it has what is supposed to be the Holy Grail, the actual cup that Jesus drank from at the last supper, although that claim is also upheld by several other places around the world too. The cathedral is a lovely old place and well worth visiting, however the grail is one of the must-see attractions for those of a religious following. The authors David Rhead and Jose Marin looked in great detail at the story of the cup and suggested that the cup had travelled from Rome centuries ago, however when the Muslim rulers took over Spain, it was put into hiding for centuries and only returned to the city in 1427 by the gloriously named King Alfonso the magnanimous! Whilst the prospect of wandering around a food market is not everyone’ first choice of what to do whilst on holiday, the historic market in central Valencia is a bit different and is actually well worth visiting.

...at Christmas No chance of a White Christmas here, but hey - you can enjoy Christmas in relative warmth. Valencia gets very pretty over Christmas: lots of gorgeous iluminations and lots of energy in the streets. The main area to see the Christmas setting is of course the centre of Valencia, especially all the landmarks such as Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de Ayuntamento. Plaza de la Reina will host the Christmas crafts market - good for souvenirs and local delicacies. Plaza de Ayuntamento will host the main Nativity Scene - those compositions will be throughout the city over Christmas. Christmas in Valencia is an outdoor affair. Christmas markets pop up in the city’s squares, streets and market buildings to offer tourist and locals alike everything from toys and Christmas decorations to handcrafted products such as pottery and glassware. The most famous Christmas market is the one located around the Central Market, with more than 60 stalls selling an exciting range of items from 1 December to 6 January. Then there’s the Mercado de Reyes (the Kings’ Market), one of the biggest with close to 250 stalls, which takes up residence in the streets surrounding Cabanyal Market from 3 to 6 January.

You’ll be able to find range of hand crafted products at the ARTEVAL Craft Fair in Plaza de la Reina, next to the Cathedral, while the impressive Colón Market building will be hosting a range of Christmas stalls and activities throughout the festive season, including carol singing from 30 November to 6 January and the PROA Craft Fair from 13 December to 6 January. Once again this year Las Naves, situated on Calle Juan Verdeguer, will be putting on its Christmas Space Festival with a range of activities such as children’s workshops, the sale of handcrafted products and toy and food collections for those in need. The Christmas market will be open from 20th to 24th December, while you can visit the Mercado de Reyes from 2nd to 5th January. The City of Arts and Sciences will also be hosting a Christmas market from 23 December to 6 January, with children’s activities and craft demonstrations.

I’M DREAMING OF A... The Met Office defines a White Christmas as a single snowflake falling in the 24 hours of December 25th. A proper covering of snow on the ground has only happened four times in the period – 2009 and 2010 were both “properly” white. Traditionally the location was the Met Office building in London. However, with the increase in betting on where will see a White Christmas the number of locations have increased and can now include Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie - Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. ICE ICE BABY Monthly temperature records began in 1659 and the Great Frost of 1684 remains the coldest extended period in English history. The Thames was frozen to a depth of 11 inches for two months. The Thames last froze in 1837, but the key change hasn’t been air temperature. The removal of old London Bridge in 1831, embanking and dredging has increased the river’s flow, preventing the formation of ice. COLD FRONTS Snowbirders, snow-hunters and snowriggers were slang terms for underwear thieves in Australia, Britain and America respectively. 10

A survivor from the

Deep Injured Loggerhead turtle becomes poster-boy for marine-rescue group. By Adéle Land Roquetas de Mar aquarium’s newest resident is a three-limbed turtle named Juan. The small Loggerhead was rescued in May 2014 by marine-recue group Equinac after an alert was made by a group of kite-surfers off the coast of Almerimar. Volunteers were dispatched to the area where they found the turtle, tangled in a fishing net and showing signs of numerous injuries. Loggerheads are an endangered species, under threat both while nesting on beaches and in the sea, the biggest threat to the survival of these creatures is entanglement in discarded fishing gear and dredges. After transporting the creature to the Equinac base, the volunteers found he had suffered a serious injury to one of his flippers which was showing no signs of any blood flow and early signs showed that amputation may be necessary. The animal also had head and neck injuries conducive to having been hit by a boat. In typical Equinac tradition, the young loggerhead was named Juan, after one of the people who reported the incident. In the days following the rescue, Juan was treated for his injuries by Equinac vets and the decision was taken to amputate the injured limb in order to save his life. The medical team also discovered lacerations to the eye and a small crack in the skull, the small creature had a long road of recovery ahead of him. Thanks to the group’s Facebook page Juan became quite the star and developed a large following! In the months after his rescue, Juan began his rehabilitation in the Equinac pool, learning to swim and dive with only three limbs, gaining weight and strength day by day. During his recovery period, various videos were made of his progress with the aim of raising awareness of the need to protect our environment and not treat the sea as a “rubbish tip”. Other success stories of sea turtles rehabilitated by the group include - ‘Elvirita’, a young female who was returned to the sea after a year of recovery and ‘Matilde’ who suffered similar injuries to Juan but retained part of the injured flipper. Another female, ‘Lassa’, got to mix with the stars, after a year’s rehabilitation she was released back to the sea by Grammy award winning Almerian singer David Bisbal. The Equinac team hoped that one day Juan would also be able to return to the sea but due to the severity of his injuries it was decided that, for now, he should continue his rehabilitation in an environment as close to his natural one as possible. 12

Discussions were held and preparations were made to transfer Juan to the aquarium in Roquetas de Mar. While Equinac generally opposes the keeping of wild animals in captivity especially when it is for commercial purposes which subject individuals to unnatural behaviours and environments, the group is grateful that Juan has found an opportunity to live in Roquetas Aquarium’s installations. Equinac volunteer Alexander Sanchez said: “We wish we could have freed him - he is the first turtle, or animal in fact, that Equinac has declared unreleasable in the over 15 years of the NGO’s existence.” Mr Sanchez added: “Juan was very lucky that he was found by a group of surfers, he had been entangled in fishing gear and also been hit by a boat. Many turtles worldwide don’t survive to tell the tale when either of these things occur. He is a swimming and breathing example of a much bigger problem that affects Juan’s photo shoot

not only his species, but practically all species in the ocean.” Juan soon settled in to his new home and enjoys swimming with his new fishy friends, the groupers. Since his relocation, the young turtle has become quite the superstar with local newspapers and TV stations reporting on his story. Equinac is grateful to all the volunteers who helped with Juan’s rehabilitation and also to his namesake, Juan the kite surfer, who called 112 and alerted the group to the situation. Anyone who finds a marine animal in distress or stranded on a beach should call the 112 emergency number straight away in order that the right course of action can be taken. While Juan’s story has quite a happy ending, it is important to remember the part we, as humans, play in the safety and survival of sea creatures. The oceans is our greatest natural resources and we must take care to protect them and the creatures which live within. Equinac is a non-profit organisation, with a team of volunteers dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine and other animals. The group was featured in the last edition of the Ultimate magazine. Find out more about Equinac on Facebook or at www.equinac.org

over indulging?

Wondering how you’re going to survive the holiday party season? A professional nutritionist shares their secrets for staying healthy over Christmas, avoiding overindulgence and beating the morning-after blues.

E

Everything starts with breakfast If I’m going out in the evening, I’ll start the day with a generous bowl of porridge, topped with a handful of cranberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Porridge stabilises blood sugar levels, which helps control appetite later in the day. I also add a good dollop of probiotic yogurt, which helps boost immunity as well as combat some of the less beneficial effects of the party season, like too much alcohol and not enough sleep.

Stay hydrated On the day of a big night out, and the day after, I make a conscious effort to drink 6-8 glasses of water, or plenty of herbal teas or diluted juice. Even mild dehydration can lead to a headache and combined with the diuretic effects of alcohol makes maintaining your fluid intake so important. Regular teas and coffee count towards your fluid intake, but caffeinated versions shouldn’t make up your full quota. I sometimes struggle to drink enough when it’s cold, so I’ll take a full glass of water to bed with me at night and start the day with a second. I make sure I’ve drunk both before I have my breakfast.

Sensible snacking If I’m hungry when I arrive at a party, I struggle to resist the canapés, so I always have a pre-party snack. One of my favourites is a small pot of plain yogurt with a sliced banana. The yogurt’s protein slows stomach emptying, which helps delay the effects of that first glass of wine while

the potassium-rich banana helps balance any increase in my salt intake - especially helpful if I’m going to be nibbling on olives, crisps or salted nuts. I know I’m better off eating before I go to a party because I’m more likely to stick to my resolve when the canapés come round a second or third time. Other snacks which do the trick include granary toast with nut butter, a bowl of muesli with milk, or a mug of chunky vegetable soup.

helps my body repair DNA. Eggs are an excellent choice for the morning after because they provide choline, a nutrient that supports the liver. Add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper or a chopped chilli to boost circulation and rev up your recovery. If you can’t face a cooked breakfast then have a smoothie made with fruits like bananas, oranges or kiwi - these are rich in potassium which helps replenish the electrolytes lost due to the diuretic effects of alcohol.

Back away from the buffet Buffets can be a disaster zone - so I make sure I fill half my plate with salad and vegetables, and the rest with protein-based canapés like salmon and chicken. I take my time selecting and eating my food and I move away from the table as soon as my plate is full so I avoid non-stop grazing. Get back on track After a big night out I don’t skip meals, even if I have over-indulged. After all, it’s the balance of your diet that’s important. I apply the 80:20 principle - eating healthily 80% of the time, which allows me the space for delicious treats at weekends and on special occasions.

No more hangovers Don’t be tempted to skip meals so you can stockpile calories for drinking. Alcohol only supplies empty calories, so avoiding proper meals to compensate for a booze splurge means you’re losing out on valuable nutrients, just when your body needs them to help it detoxify. I stick to one type of drink and I make it a lightercoloured one because they tend to be lower in the chemical by-products that can worsen a hangover. I aim to have no more than one alcoholic drink an hour, alternated with juice, water or soft drinks - perfect if you don’t like holding an empty glass. What to eat the next morning My best ‘morning after’ breakfast is a frittata or omelette packed with veg. I love mushrooms for their energising B vitamins, tomatoes for vitamin C and onions for their liver-friendly sulphur compounds. If I have spinach to hand I’ll add a generous handful because it’s a great source of folate which

But for the rest of us As most us will do eat, drink and be merry and worry about it after the festive season, it is the time for partying and family so enjoy!! So what about a scrumptious roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings, a strawberry pavlova washed down with some gorgeous red wine. That’s what we’ll be doing!! 17

“Trofeo Penon de Ifach” Cycle Sportif, Calpe 2015.

On Saturday 10th October 2015 Twelve members of Team “Cyclogical” based in Quesada travelled to Calpe to participate in the 6th Trofeo Penon de Ifach Sportif. Accompanied by their wives and partners they all stayed in the Diamante Beach hotel which has been the main Headquarters for the race for the past 6 years. On arrival at the hotel it was a quick check in, register for the race, collect your commemorative sportif top and race number, park up cars, bikes and cases into the bedrooms and off to the nearest sports bar to watch the Rugby. We all met up for dinner in the hotel dining room at 8pm followed by a few drinks then an early night. The Sportif / race is always well organised and started just after breakfast between 8am and 9am on Sunday 11th, all participants and team’s started when they were ready as everyone was wearing a chip to register their times on completion, this was a big improvement on previous years as it meant that there was no mass start and no following the pace car, it was basically a race from start to finish against the clock and all the other riders.

Karate for 25 years. He has only been on a road bike 9 times in his life, twice last year when he was over on holiday, four on his son’s bike at home, twice this week and then the actual cycle race itself, I was a bit worried when I took him out on the Wednesday night that he arrived as we only did 60k and he walked up through Benimar on the way home, on the Thursday evening it was our club training night and he managed to do 75k at quite a slow pace. However he was looking forward to the challenge on Sunday. We started with the main group at approx 8.30am and we just took our time, up and down, up and down for about 70k and that was it, Willie decided enough was enough so from now on he was walking up the ups and cycling on the downs. It was great for me as I got to see the countryside and enjoys the views, we even stopped at both of the water stops to fill Willie’s water bottles, have a glass of coke and a banana, this is the first time that I have managed to do a complete Sportif using only half a bottle of water. After the second water stop Willie couldn’t get his shoes to clip in to the pedals , i adjusted the p pedals but no difference,, after j

There were 2 food / water stops on route which were optional and plenty of beer and food at the finish. This was the first time that i took my time on a Sportif as i always have to go as fast as i can and try and get a good place, but this year my best mate Willie came across from Scotland especially to take part in his first ever Sportif. Willie celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this year and is still exceptionally fit for his age. We were both in the Regiment together and both taught Shotokan

checking again he had actually worn away the complete front of the cleats by walking up the hills and could no longer clip in. Having no choice he just got on with it and did the rest of the race unable to clip in. After the 80k mark it became relatively flat with most of the main hills now behind us and only 500m of climbing left, we were off with Willie hard on my wheel, we cycled most of the way back until 10k out and by this time Willie had to walk once again. Once at the top of the last climb it was downhill and he was back in the saddle all the way in to Calpe, we took 5 hours 50 mins to complete the event but Willie had made it – a great achievement and even managed to beat two of our team members. We came over the finish line to cheers from fellow competitors, family and friends, all of whom had been waiting patiently for us. We quickly laid our bikes up against the wall and proceeded to the beer table for a few beers to quench our thirst, this was a great achievement for Willie who was absolutely delighted to be finished. The first group of riders were back around the 4 hour mark with many others taking over 6 hours with some even taking 7 hours to complete the circuit which was 126kms with approx 2500metres of climbing involved. All of team Cyclogical performed well especially Big Dave ( sniffer ) who got lost and did about 20kms more than everyone else and also Alan Quearns

who finished 11th overall out of a field of 168 riders which was considerably less than previous years. The Team are pictured at the entrance to the Diamante Beach Hotel ( left to right Malcky Murray, Owen Desmond, Gary Mullhall, Peter Cunningham, Richard Binns, Alan Quearns, Gary Routledge, Jamie Duffy, Willie Duncan, Dave sniffer Robertson and Martyn Stone being presented with the team trophy by Jurgen Van Hoolen of Vuelta Turistica which was a lovely chunk of glass with a 3d image of The Penon de Ifach.

Team “Cyclogical” meet every Thursday night at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 100kms at a moderate to fast pace so if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. We also have a newly formed Improvers Group so if you are looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637487377.

All routes are now available from our website: www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com and from our newly published book “ Cycling tips and Advice” with 20 cycle routes around the Costa Blanca. Gary and Lynn are available at Cyclogical in Quesada Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10am till 2pm on Saturdays to assist and advise you on all your cycling requirements. 27

Absolute Pandemonium Brian Blessed

When You Dead, you Dead Guy Martin

Mourinho is both a visually sumptuous celebration of The Special One’s exceptional managerial career so far, and an enigmatic insight into his unique brand of football wisdom and philosophy. In the legendary manager’s very first book, and in his own words and images, Jose Mourinho charts the peaks and troughs of the opening fifteen years of what has been a stellar rise to the summit of the global game.

Open Absolute Pandemonium and you’ll be taken on a riotous journey from his childhood, growing up the son of a miner in Goldthorpe, to finding fame in Z-Cars.

The maddest 12 months of my life. The journey starts with an oddball race up an American mountain and ends with me checking myself out of hospital with a broken back. Again …’

Along the way he takes secret revenge on headmistress Mrs Jarman and her very big bottom, punches Harold Pinter, loves and hates Peter O’Toole, woos his beautiful wife Hildegard Neil and braves the shocking death toll on cosy TV drama My Family and Other Animals. Crammed with anecdotes Through more than 120 personally selected from his illustrious career, this is a funny, images (many of which are exclusive to warm-hearted, life-affirming, LOUD and the book), fans will relish an intimate and unique memoir from a much-loved figure. unmissable opportunity to understand and further appreciate this giant of the sport.

As Guy Martin’s grandfather Voldemars frequently reminded him,’When you dead, you dead.’ So, before it’s all over, Guy Martin is making the most of the time he’s got. But let Guy tell you about it himself: ‘This book starts in a Transit, ends in a Transit, and in between I’ve raced a few pushbikes, raced a few motorbikes and got a fair few stories to tell you.’ Spot on.

3 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS

Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

CAMERA MODES knowing your settings... You now have a little idea about what equipment can help you, how to prepare your equipment and have everything at hand so that you can take better pictures. I now want to introduce you to the most common settings and modes on your cameras and explain a little about what they do and when best to use them. • Locating your modes. There are many ways to find your modes on various cameras and I cant list them all but I can tell you what you need to be looking for. Most compact cameras or camera phones have these accessible via the screen menu system so you want to be looking for the buttons for “menu”, “scene”, “settings” or “creative modes” and spend some time finding this, reading your manual and getting confident you can access this easily and quickly. • Turning off “Auto”. I am a huge advocate of getting you to switch off your “auto” modes on your cameras and for some good reasons. Have you ever had that pause between pressing the shutter and the picture taking? It’s annoying and can cause blurring as you move the camera before the shot has been taken or the subject moves thinking it has been taken...well, this can be avoided by switching off “auto” or “intelligent auto”. This is due to the processor (or the small computer in your camera) trying to work out what kind of picture you are taking based on what its “seeing” through the lens. Well you can help speed up this process by setting the mode before hand.

5 MODES Top: A typical menu or mode selection screen on a compact camera. Middle: Selection dial of a DSLR camera Bottom: The most common icons for the modes mentioned. Some may differ but they are generally similar to these.

There is a lot to be learnt from the history, processes and science behind photography which helps you understand these modes and I can’t possibly go into detail here but I can try to give you the basics of what each of these 5 modes will do and how they will help you. 1. Landscape mode This mode allows is a wider depth of field by using a small aperture meaning that more detail throughout your scene will be in focus from foreground to background, allowing you to take crisp pictures of views, vistas and scenery. 2. Portrait mode When taking photos of a single subject, the camera will automatically uses a large aperture to help keep the background out of focus by using a narrow depth of field so the subject being photographed is the only thing in focus. 3. Macro mode Enables you to focus on subjects close to the camera lens. Macro mode is commonly used to photographing flowers, insects and other small items that you want a close-up view of. Depth of field is narrowed creating very dramatic effects with focus on such small subjects. 4. Sport mode Used to take better sports or action shots. The sports mode will usually automatically set the camera to increase the shutter speed in order to freeze the action in the frame. Sports mode may also be called action mode on some digital cameras. 5. Night mode This function is used when you are taking photos in low-light or at night time. Your camera will use a long shutter speed to capture scene details and also fires the camera’s flash to illuminate the subject or foreground of the shot and may raise your ISO. Christmas traditions

from around the world... Australia

In Australia, December 25 falls during summer vacation, so many of the country’s Christmas festivities take place outdoors. The most popular event of the Christmas season is called Carols by Candlelight. People come together at night to light candles and sing Christmas carols outside. The stars shining above add to the sights and sounds of this wonderful outdoor concert.

CHINA

The small number of Christians in China call Christmas Sheng Dan Jieh, which means Holy Birth Festival. They decorate their homes with evergreens, posters, and bright paper chains. Families put up a Christmas tree, called a “tree of light,” and decorate it with beautiful lanterns, flowers, and red paper chains that symbolize happiness. They cut out red pagodas to paste on the windows, and they light their houses with paper lanterns.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia follows the ancient Julian calendar, so Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on January 7. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s celebration of Christ’s birth is called Ganna. It is a day when families attend church. Everyone dresses in white. Most Ethiopians don a traditional shamma -- a thin, white

cotton wrap with brightly colored stripes across the ends. Twelve days after Ganna, on January 19, Ethiopians begin the three-day celebration called Timkat, which commemorates the baptism of Christ.

France

Holland

Dutch children in Holland, or the Netherlands, eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas on St. Nicholas Day on December 6. Sinterklaas is a kindly bishop. He wears red robes and a tall, pointed mitre on his head. Sinterklaas travels by ship from Spain to Amsterdam’s harbor every winter. He brings his white horse and a huge sack full of gifts for the children. Families celebrate St. Nicholas Eve at home with lots of good food, hot chocolate, and a letterbanket, a “letter cake” made in the shape of the first letter of the family’s last name.

Christmas celebrations France begin on December 5, which is St. Nicholas Eve, but Christmas Eve is the most special time in the French celebration of Christmas. Church bells ring and voices sing French carols, called noels. On Christmas Day, families go to church and then enjoy an abundant feast of wonderful dishes, ending with the traditional buche de Noel, a rich buttercream-filled cake shaped and Sweden frosted to look like a Yule log. In Sweden, the Christmas festivities begin on December 13 with St. Lucia’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint Germany German families prepare for Christmas of light. Christmas log The bizarre Catalonian tradition of caga tió (or “defecating log” in English) involves creating a character out of a small log - often complete with a grinning face and hat – which sits on the dining room table during the fortnight leading up to Christmas. It has to be fed every day with fruit, nuts and sweets, and then – on Christmas Eve – the entire family beats the log with sticks, while singing traditional songs, forcing the log to excrete its treats. You couldn’t make it up. 31

Perfect present wrapping tips: 1. Gather wrapping materials. Assemble your present, the wrapping paper, scissors, and tape, and then clear a large, flat surface such as a kitchen table. 2. Secure fragile items. Make sure that anything fragile within your box is wrapped securely and won’t move around or become damaged. Tip: Use a small piece of tape to keep the box closed. 3. Measure out how much paper you need to cut. Roll out your wrapping paper—but don’t cut it yet. Bottoms Up! The festive season is a time to celebrate, get together with family and friends, exchange gifts and look forward to the year ahead. A tradition celebrated around the world is to raise a glass and make a toast but did you know many countries have different rituals and traditions related to this celebratory act.

In Greece, the toasting drink of choice is of course Ouzo, traditionally the host will make a toast then guests are invited to make their own throughout the evening, Greek toasts can be quite long-winded but an easy one to remember is “yamas” which means good health, (plate smashing not recommended unless invited to!)

The tradition of toasting is believed to have begun with the ancient Greeks, adopted by the Romans and rolled out through the centuries. Should you find yourself in some far-flung destination over the holidays here’s how to fit in with the party crowd and make a good impression on your hosts!

Different regions in Italy have different toasts, some more bizarre than others, in one region you make a toast saying “I hope you die” all in a good natured way of course! A glass of Chianti or regional sparkling wine is raised and to keep it simple, “salud” or “chin chin” will usually suffice.

Raise your glasses...

Koreans are renowned for partying hard, so at any celebration, be prepared to grab your glass of beer in In Armenia, a toast is usually made two hands, yell “gun bae” and knock with Raki, an aniseed-flavoured milky it back. spirit also popular in Turkey, it is tradition to link arms in a big circle and The Irish toast can go on for quite a shout “Genatset” before downing it in while and it is classed as rude to set your glass down before the speaker one. has finished, try to look interested The Chinese often use a local beer to and wait for the final word “slainte” make a toast and it is good etiquette to before taking a drink of your whiskey ensure when clinking glasses the rim or Guinness. of the host’s glass sits above yours as In eighteenth century Russia it was you shout “Ganbei”! tradition to down your vodka, shout Germans love their potent shots and “nazdarovya” and then throw your enjoy any excuse to raise a glass, clink glass into the fire hearth. Toasting tips: • Remember to make sure everyone’s glass is full before making a toast. • It is polite to allow the host to make a toast before guests make their own. • Keep it simple, humorous attempts can fall flat and it’s better to speak from the heart. • If there are teetotallers at the event, make sure they have a substitute for alcohol, but if there are teetotal sailors at the party never offer them water to toast, tradition says this would send them to a watery grave!

Cheers!

ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS CHOCCY CAKE We thought as an alternative to Christmas pudding, this wonderful, easy peasy, impressive cake is simply divine for the Christmas Celebrations. The cake is wonderfully moist and keeps for 4-5 days, so can be made in advance of the celebrations. You can decorate to your hearts delight! It is important to note that as the mixture is quite thin, it is important to use sandwich tins, as oppose to springform tins, which could leak.

Ingredients:

Method:

• 225g Plain Flour. • 350g Caster sugar. • 85g Cocoa powder. • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder. • 1 ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda. •2 Medium sized eggs. • 250ml milk. • 125ml vegetable oil. • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. • 250ml boiling water.

1. Preheat oven to 180c/350f/gas 4. Grease and line two 20cm/8inch sandwich tins.

ICING INGREDIENTS. • 200G Chocolate plain or milk (make sure the chocolate is at least 70%) • 200ml double cream.

Enjoy!

2. Place all the ingredients, except the boiled water into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or an electric whisk, beat the mixture until smooth and well combined. 3. Then add the boiling water a little at a time, mixing in until smooth. The mixture will be very runny (do not worry!). 4. Get a jug and empty mixture into and then divide mixture between the tine and bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes or until the top s firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. 5. Once cooked, allow to cool completely, still in their tins before icing. Once cooled remove from tins and leave for icing. 6. For the icing, break the chocolate in smallish pieces, and add cream, heat over low heat until the chocolate melts. 7. Remove from the heat and whisk until smooth, glossy and thickened. 8. Leave icing to cool for 1-2 hours. 9. Spread some of the icing to one inner side of cake, then put other cake on top and ice carefully with remainder of the icing.

OMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COME

Lee Mack Lee Gordon McKillop (born 4 August 1968), known as Lee Mack, is an English stand-up comedian and actor best known for writing the sitcom “Not Going Out and starring in it as the main character, also called Lee. Since 2007, Lee has been a team captain, on the BBC One comedy panel show Would I Lie to You? He is also the host of the Sky1 panel show Duck Quacks Don’t Echo. He has been guest host on Have I Got News For You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks and a guest panelist on QI too. Mack was born in Southport, Lancashire and lived there above a pub until he was 12 when his parents separated and he moved to Blackburn, Lancashire. He went to Birkdale County Junior School, Stanley High School in Southport and Everton High School in Blackburn. Upon leaving school, Mack worked in a bingo hall and as a stable boy. After working at the stable of racehorse trainer Ginger McCain in Southport for three days, he asked if he could ride one of the horses, to which the trainer agreed. Without realising, Mack then chose Red Rum as the first horse he’d ever ridden. Mack then became a blue coat for Pontins at Hemsby near Great Yarmouth. After appearing on stage drunk one night, and calling an audience member an offensive name, he was sacked from the Hemsby team, and did six months at Pontins in Morecambe.

EDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY Mack went on to have various other jobs, and did his first “open mic” slot in 1994, while studying at Brunel University from which he graduated with a degree in drama. Within 18 months he was a full-time comedian. Here are a few of his one liners: If you can’t beat them... then what’s the point in having kids? I was on a date with a gorgeous woman. She said, “You’re so funny. It feels so good to laugh. I haven’t been able to laugh since my mother died.” I said, “You laughed when your mother died?”

I came home from work last week to find my wife with my laptop. I said, “What are you doing?” She said, “I’m sorry, I spilt curry all over the keyboard.” I said, “You did what?!” She said, “Don’t worry, most of it came off when I ran it under the tap.” They say that prostitution is the oldest profession in the world. If that’s true then who the hell had any money to pay them?

Apparently, 50,000 died from driving last year and 10,000 died from drinking, Yet only 500 died from drink driving. Then again, only 2 people died from drink driving and juggling. I think that’s my safest way home then. My old man used to say “When in Rome do as the Romans do...” That was just before he got locked up in an Italian prison for murdering 20,000 Christians. I got stopped by one of those market researchers the other day. She said, “Do you mind if I ask you ten short questions?” I said, “Okay, go on then.” “Have you ever suffered from a blackout?” she asked. “I don’t think so,” I replied. She said, “And, finally, question ten.”

2015 Hero World Challenge

December 3rd - 6th 2015 Albany, New Providence, Bahamas The Hero World Challenge is a golf tournament hosted by Tiger Woods, which takes place each December. In 2015 it will move to the Bahamas. It features a small number (currently 18) of top-ranked golf pros. The tournament is a benefit for the Tiger Woods Foundation. Tiger Woods revealed in his press conference that the tournament will be played at Albany in The Bahamas for the next three years. It will be the tournament’s first trip outside the United States. Albany golf course is a desert links style championship golf course enjoyable for players of all levels. Designed by Ernie Els, the golf course measures 7,400 yards from the back tees and features five Par 3s and five Par 5s. In addition to the course, Albany offers its members and resort guests world-class practice facilities including a 400-yard, double-end driving range and multiple short game areas, along with a state-ofthe-art swing performance center that was specifically tailored for our PGA Tour professionals’ needs.

48

Albany won the most recent Tavistock Cup. Tim Clark, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, and Woods represented Albany in last year’s Tavistock Cup at Isleworth. Adam Scott and Justin Rose both have homes at Albany. This is the first year the World Challenge is being played at Isleworth, where Woods lived after turning pro. The inaugural tournament was played at Arizona’s Grayhawk Golf Club in January 2000 before being held at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California, from 2000-2013. Woods is a five-time World Challenge champion and fivetime runner-up.

Prize money won by the players is not included in money rankings on any of the world’s professional golf tours, but the tournament is recognized as an unofficial money event by the PGA Tour. Since 2009, the event offers Official World Golf Ranking points. In 2007 the total prize fund was $5.75 million, similar to many official PGA Tour events, which usually have fields of about 150 players In 2014, the first prize was $1 million, and the total purse was $3.5 million. These amounts look like continuing in 2015. Tiger Woods usually donates his prize money to his foundation. Jordan Spieth 2014 Winner

Initially, the tournament had a 16 man field composed of the defending champion, the top 11 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, and 4 sponsors exemptions chosen by the Tiger Woods Foundation. In 2008, the field was increased to 18 players, consisting of the most recent winners of the four major PGA tournaments, the top 11 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, the defending champion, and 2 special exemption players selected by the Foundation.

WANT LOWER SCORES?

Learn to Chip.

In reality, chipping might be the single fastest way to lower scores. Think about it – if you miss the green and hit a poor chip, a bogey is almost a sure result. If you miss the green and hit a good chip to within a few feet, you have an excellent chance to save your par. So, the question becomes, how many greens do you miss during a round? Even a good amateur player is going to miss about half the greens, while a less-capable player might miss 13-14 greens during an 18 hole round. For the sake of some easy maths, let’s imagine that you miss ten greens during an average round of golf. If you are currently a poor chipper, you may get those ten chances up and down just twice. By improving your chipping, it is well-within reach to get up and down six out of those ten tries (if not more). That means, by just improving your chipping, you could save four shots a round! No matter how long you stand on the practice tee hitting drivers, you will never save four shots as quickly as you will with better chipping. Tip #1 – Use Your Hands The worst advice that gets passed around on golf courses everywhere is that you should chip using a putting motion. Nothing could be further from the truth. To chip effectively, you need to engage your hands and let them work for you. A putting stroke uses no hand movement, and therefore gets no hinge in the wrists. Hinging your wrists is critical to a good chip shot because it allows the club to get up above the grass and hit down with a descending strike. Tip #2 – Use One Club Why try to achieve perfect chipping with several different clubs? Choose one club, preferably your sand wedge, and get really good and chipping with it. With proper technique, you will be able to hit a wide-range of shots with just the one club, and you will develop confidence by using it time after time. Tip #3 – Get on the Green at All Costs Not all chip shots are created equal. Some are hit from short grass right off the side of the green to a hole that is located generously in the middle of the putting surface. Others are hit from deep rough on a downhill lie where the hole is cut right next to the edge. When you get ready to hit a chip shot, evaluate the situation and make a smart choice for the type of shot you are going to try and pull off. There should be one main goal that supersedes all others before executing each chip – you next shot has to be a putt. Don’t try to pull off a miracle chip and leave the ball in the same type of rough on the opposite side of the green. Remember, even if it means a longer putt, make sure the ball finishes on the green. Tip #4 – Decide Where You Want to Putt From Unless you hole out your chip shot, you are going to need to make a putt to finish off your up-and-down save. Before you chip, walk up to the hole and decide where you want to putt from to make your job as easy as possible. If the hole is cut on a flat section of the green, your read won’t matter as much and you can simply try to get the chip as close as possible. However, if the hole is on a slope, you are going to want to make sure you are putting uphill. An uphill putt of five feet is often easier than a downhill putt from three feet, so keep that in mind when planning your chip. A good leave can give you confidence to knock the putt in and walk off with your par save. Tip #5 – Play Long Rough like a Bunker Shot If you find yourself in some long grass near the green, with your ball sitting down at the bottom, try using your bunker shot technique to splash the ball up, out, and onto the green. A normal chipping motion, with the club face square, will often get tangled in the grass and can be hard to control. Instead, lay the club face open and try using a bigger swing to slide through the grass and float the ball into the air. This shot isn’t easy – but no shot is easy from long rough. With a little practice, you should be able to put the ball on the green consistently from this kind of lie, which will at least give you a chance to make a putt. 49

It is the end of a beautiful relationship. Time to make the break By Tony Myles You manage all the easy decisions in your life such as where will you live, what school should your kids attend, what career should you pursue. Then life throws at you the most difficult decision of all. One that will cause you to reflect upon your past experiences. You will agonise over it for an interminable period of time. You may feel the need to seek professional counselling in order to help you decide You grasp at clues and look for evidence in every quarter. You gaze in admiration at those who have previously gone through this with apparent ease. Eventually you realise that only you can make that one decision that will have a far reaching impact on your life. It is the end of an era. Time to move on as you finally decide :-

It is time to change your golf clubs? How long have you had them? Do you remember the teething period when you were just getting to know each other? Then there were the occasions when they were entirely to blame for causing you to hook that shot into the lake. How you punished them for that by bashing them into the fairway. But then there was an equal number of days when they could do no wrong. Oh the ecstasy of watching your ball cover the pin as it sailed exquisitely towards the centre of the green. The simplicity with which they enabled you to float your ball out of any hazard and send it spectacularly on its way to the hole.

There is good news. Well In the meantime you can feel excited actually it is BRILLIANT news. about your new set of clubs knowing

that they have been matched to your build and style. Think of it as an Just look what Campbell has done opportunity to create a wonderful new for you. visited for Christmas

1. Austria

With elaborately-woven Advent wreaths, nativity displays and sparkling tree ornaments, Austria’s handcrafted Christmas decorations are just one of the reasons to visit the Austria’s celebrated Christmas markets. Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, delivers a traditional Christmas, with classical music concerts, carol singers and an atmospheric market piled with traditional baked goods, candied fruits and roasted chestnuts. Alternatively, Vienna’s main Christmas Market is one of the oldest in Europe, dating back to the late 13th-century.

2. Germany

Home to Europe’s original ‘Christkindlmarkt’ Christmas market, Germany is one of the continent’s most festive destinations come December. Visit the oldest Christmas market in Dresden, dating back to 1435; Munich’s huge Marienplatz market and Tollwood Winter Festival; or Berlin’s hugely popular Christmas Market, held in the grounds of the stunning Charlottenburg Castle. Make sure you tuck into some Lebkuchen – delicious spiced gingerbread – washed down with a cup of Glühwein – hot mulled wine.

3. London, England

The inspiration behind Charles Dickens’ famous novel “A Christmas Carol,” London has no shortage of festive traditions to keep visitors entertained over the holidays. Expect a spectacular array of Christmas lights brightening up the city streets; vibrant Christmas markets stretching along the Thames River and Hyde Park; magical Santa’s grottos; and ice rinks popping up below the city’s landmark buildings. Don’t forget to tuck into a healthy portion of Christmas pudding, too – the festive dessert dates back to medieval England and the English still swear by their secret recipe, served doused in flaming brandy.

4. Paris, France

Spend Christmas in the world’s most romantic city, Paris, where the city lives up to its nickname the “City of Lights,” with a glittering display of Christmas lights – don’t miss the animated window displays at department store Galeries Lafayette. Go ice-skating or shop for gifts beneath the iconic Eiffel Tower; visit one of the many Christmas-themed markets or take a ride on the giant Ferris wheel at Place la Concorde. If you’re in France over the holidays, pay a visit to the “capital of Christmas” too – Strasbourg hosts the country’s most renowned Christmas markets, dating back to 1570, and draws visitors from all over Europe

5. Bethlehem

There’s no place more traditional to spend Christmastime than in Bethlehem, Israel, the birthplace of Jesus and the center of nativity scenes worldwide. Thousands make the pilgrimage to Bethlehem each year, gathering in the Manger Square on Christmas Eve and attending the midnight mass service at the Church of the Nativity, built on the spot where Jesus was born. It’s a gathering of locals and foreigners, with all religions coming together to watch or partake in the carol singing, candle parades and live music.

6. Rome, Italy

Even if you’re not a regular churchgoer, Christmas Eve is one night of the year when people all over the world descend on their local church for the special midnight mass service. And where better to celebrate the birth of Christ, than at the Vatican in Rome, with Pope Francis himself? Papal audiences with the Pope, featuring readings, a blessing and prayers are held year round in St. Peter’s Basilica, the colonnaded square in the Vatican city, but few services are as memorable as Christmas mass. Held at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve, then again at 12 p.m. on Christmas day, make sure you book your tickets in advance if you don’t want to miss out.

7. New York, USA

One of the world’s biggest holiday destinations, New York’s most famous tourist spots get a yuletide makeover in the run-up to Christmas. Check out the dazzling Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center, with its 30,000 twinkling fairy lights; stroll along Fifth Avenue where the shops are aglow with festive window displays; go ice skating in Central Park; or marvel at Macy’s fantastical Santaland. If you really want to get in the mood, get tickets to one of the city’s famous Christmas shows – the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas spectacular, with its living nativity and flying Santa, is a huge favorite, as is St. John the Divine’s Winter Solstice.

8. Madrid, Spain

Madrid is in the mood for a fiesta during the Christmas season and there’s plenty to keep visitors entertained, from the Christmas market in Plaza Mayor to a number of pop-up ice rinks. The Christmas season officially starts on Dec. 15, marked with a huge show in Plaza de Oriente, and culminating with the vibrant Three Kings Parade on Jan. 5, an annual procession of colorful floats and a walking nativity, marching through the city streets

9. Tallinn, Estonia

For a unique Christmas away from the crowds of Western Europe, there’s plenty of Christmas spirit on offer in the Estonian capital. Tallinn’s medieval old town is dusted in snow, with nighttime lanterns giving atmospheric glow to the cobblestone streets. It was here, back in 1441, that the world’s first Christmas tree was erected and holiday traditions still include the legendary tree on Town Hall Square. Classical concerts, an international Christmas market, an outdoor ice rink and the Estonian Open Air Museum’s elaborate Christmas Village are all mainstays of the holiday season.

10. Lapland

Few destinations are as quintessentially Christmassy as Lapland, spread across the arctic regions of northern Norway, Finland and Sweden and the unofficial home of Santa Claus. Mr. Claus is in residence throughout the holiday season at Finland’s world famous Santa Claus village in Rovaniemi, where you can take a ride on a reindeer sleigh, get your postcards stamped at Santa’s very own post office, watch Santa’s Elves at work and even learn to bake gingerbread with Mrs. Claus. It’s not the only place to catch Father Christmas in action, though – he also runs a number of similar villages dotted throughout northern Norway and Sweden.

‘Christmas to a child is the first terrible proof that to travel hopefully is better than to arrive.’ Stephen Fry 55

Suffragette The New Film Released in October 2015 A historical period drama film directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan. The film centres on early members of the British women’s suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Anne-Marie Duff. The principal photography began on 24 February 2014. It is the first film in history to be shot in the Houses of Parliament, done with the permission of MPs. The film was released in the United Kingdom on 12 October 2015 and is set for a limited release in the United States on 23 October 2015 by Focus Features. History of The Suffragette Movement Suffragettes were members of women’s organisations in the late 19th and early 20th century which advocated the extension of the franchise to women. It particularly refers to militants in Great Britain such as members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). Suffragist is a more general term for members of suffrage movement. The term “suffragette” is particularly associated with activists in the British WSPU, led by Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, who were influenced by Russian methods of protest such as hunger strikes. Other tactics employed by members of the WSPU included chaining themselves to railings to provoke an arrest, pouring harsh chemicals into mailboxes, breaking windows at prestige buildings, and night-time arson at unoccupied buildings. Many suffragettes were imprisoned in Holloway Prison in London, and were force-fed after going on hunger strike. Although the Isle of Man had enfranchised women who owned property to vote in Parliamentary (Tynwald ) elections in 1881, New Zealand was the first self-governing country to grant all women the right to vote in 1893 when all women over the age of 21 were permitted to vote in parliamentary elections. Women in South Australia achieved the same right and also became the first to obtain the right to stand for Parliament in 1895. In the United States, white women over the age of 21 were allowed to vote in the western territories of Wyoming from 1869 and in Utah from 1870, and in most states outside the South by 1919.

58

“I had to get a close-hand view of the misery and unhappiness of a man made world, before I reached the point where I could successfully revolt against it.” Emmeline Pankhurst With the ratification in 1920 of the Nineteenth Amendment the suffrage was extended to white women across the United States in time for the 1920 presidential election. Women over 21 were allowed to vote in Canada (except Quebec) from 1919. But women and men in Britain over the age of 30, meeting certain property qualifications, were given the right to vote in 1918, and in 1928 suffrage was extended to all women over the age of 21. British suffragettes were mostly women from upper and middle-class backgrounds, frustrated by their social and economic situation. Their struggles for change within society, along with the work of such advocates for women’s rights as John Stuart Mill, were enough to spearhead a movement that would encompass mass groups of women fighting for suffrage. Mill had first introduced the idea of women’s suffrage on the platform he presented to the British electorate in 1865. He would later be joined by numerous men and women fighting for the same cause. The term “suffragette” was first used as a term of derision by the journalist Charles E. Hands in the London Daily Mail for activists in the movement for women’s suffrage, in particular members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). But the objects of the intended ridicule gladly embraced the term saying “suffraGETtes” (hardening the g) implied not only that they wanted the vote, but that they intended to get it as well. The National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, which was founded in 1897, was formed of a collection of local suffrage societies. This union was led by Millicent Fawcett, who believed in constitutional campaigning, like issuing leaflets, organising meetings and presenting petitions. However this campaigning did not have much effect. In 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst founded a new organisation, the Women’s Social and Political Union. Pankhurst thought that the movement would have to become radical and militant if it was going to be effective. The Daily Mail later gave them the name “Suffragettes”. Some of the techniques, especially hunger strikes, were learned from Russian exiles from tsarism who had escaped to England. Many suffragists at the time, and most historians since, have argued that the militant suffragettes’ actions actually damaged their cause. Opponents at the time saw evidence that women were too emotional and could not think as logically as men.

There is also considerable regional variation. For example, the growth in homes sales in coastal areas that attract foreign buyers has been generally above the national average, as foreign demand is boosting sales in most of those areas.

Prices seem to be rising in some areas. According to one of Spain’s largest property appraisal companies, Sociedad de Tasación, prices rose by 3% in the first quarter of the year. That represents three consecutive quarters of house price increases

based on valuations carried out by this company. Sociedad de Tasación also said that the number of mortgage valuations it is doing have increased into double digits although the firm’s chief executive Juan Fernández-Aceytuno believes it is too early to celebrate as there is still much to do to bring the market up to scratch. At the same time, the latest index of asking prices for all types of residential property listed in the Idealista.com database shows that seller expectations increased by 0.2% in the first three months of the year to 1,597S per square meter. A breakdown of the figures show that asking prices increased in nine Spanish regions, and falling in seven, with one unchanged. But, on an annualised basis asking prices still fell by 3.5%. ‘The data shows that the worst of the real estate crisis is behind us. The two speed recovery is now a reality, and whilst some market segments have started to see modest price increases, in others owners still have to reduce their expectations in order to make a sale,’ said Fernando Encinar, head of research at Idealista.
