Dear Readers,
Hello Spring! The weather is fantastic, and events are in abundance, so get out to the parks and the venues with your family and friends and make some wonderful memories together. Remember, time is our most precious asset, we should all spend it pursuing activities that bring us joy.
Deciding on which Spring and Summer Camp your child will attend may seem far off, however, now is the time to start planning. We are featuring the best that Coral Springs & Parkland has to offer in this issue and the next. Camps are an excellent way for your kids to expand their social circles while finding new areas of interest and fun. From the arts and sports camps to the educational and activities camps, there is a fun and affordable option for every child to enjoy. Don’t risk losing a spot, enroll now!
Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as robotics, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work. Our publication is all about our cities and the people who live in them. We want to hear about your children’s awards and achievements. We would love to receive pictures of their athletic and artistic endeavors. Send them to cspdirectory1@gmail.com. I wish you a wonderful spring and look forward to seeing you at the fields, parks, and everywhere else around Coral Springs & Parkland.
My best to you,
Kim Kadel PublisherDear Parkland Residents,
As we settle into the new year, let’s reflect on how 2023 can be a vehicle for new beginnings, new commitments, and new opportunities. We often talk about committing to change and the myriad of opportunities available for New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps we want to become more physically active, dedicate ourselves to more community service, commit to becoming a more supportive spouse/partner, or enrich our work/life balance. We may even want to embrace a more patient outlook and approach to the daily routine of our lives. As mundane as they may sometimes seem, we must realize that our routines are something many others would love to have.
Our sense of community is integral to our wellbeing and abilities to thrive. With the support of family and friends, we can build goals and build community. It is important for us to strive to lift one another up and support our loved ones and our neighbors to help each other achieve goals that are important to them in 2023.
This month marks the five-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. The families of the victims have shown our community their tremendous strength and how a horrible tragedy can lead to inspiring collaborative achievements.
Tremendous organizations and foundations have been created to memorialize the 17 victims of this tragedy. These organizations have awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants. They have effectuated positive changes on the federal, state, and local levels regarding laws and policies that will ensure safety for us all—in the hopes that a similar horrific event is not repeated.
Let us use their strength as an example of how we can all support one another and be stronger together. Far too often we ‘sweat the small stuff’ or take the simple things for granted. When, in reality, our daily life is a gift that so many would embrace.
As Mayor, I have the honor of serving on the board of the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation. The foundation is tasked with developing a memorial to honor those who were taken from us much too soon. The foundation board consists of one elected official from Parkland, one from Coral Springs, a resident from each City, a representative from the victims’ families, an Ad Hoc member, and is chaired by Mike Moser our Deputy Fire Chief. This 501(c)3 organization had been working towards this goal for several years and the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation has finally secured land for the project which is situated between both Coral Springs and Parkland.
We have put out a call for artists to secure a reputable entity to create a unique, appropriate memorial and to help develop this site. The goal is to create a place for our community to go and reflect, heal, and, above all, remember the 17. For more information on this organization, please visit www.parkland17.org.
On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the five-year Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims. We hope the entire Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community will join us. We know the tragedy that took place here extends well beyond Parkland and we want everyone to know they are welcome. Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those that were taken and how our community comes together to honor them and comfort one another.
If you would like to share your thoughts on the memorial committee, the Commemoration event, or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland. org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
Your
Parkland Mayor, Rich WalkerDear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,
Our City is turning 60 years old this year and we invite you to all of our celebrations! I hope you enjoy living in a masterplanned community as much as I do! Please check our website at www.coralsprings.gov/events.
I want to thank those of you that celebrated the holidays with us and enjoy our numerous City events on a regular basis. While the City has so many assets from our employees to our parks, from our schools to our restaurants, I believe our citizens are one of our greatest assets!
Our citizens volunteer a lot, share important information with our Police and Code Enforcement Departments and often share gratitude for the city in which they live. On behalf of our city, thank you! If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, please look at our website.
One of the greatest aspects of our city include multiple non- profits and charities that call Coral Springs home, including the Coral Springs/Coconut Creek Chamber of commerce, the Soref Jewish Community Center and Eagles Haven. Thank you to every non-profit and 501c3 that contribute so much to our community.
If you ever want to meet with me, call (954) 344-5906 to make an appointment. I also welcome hearing from you by email at Sbrook@coralsprings.gov. Feel free to reach me directly on my cell as well at (954) 494-9872.
Thank you Kim Kadel and your publication for allowing me this opportunity to connect with our residents!
Your Friendly Mayor,
Scott J. Brook Mayor of Coral SpringsFEBRUARY

I n a tumultuous year, the stock markets finished their year on Friday, 12/30/22, the worst calendar year performance since the financial crisis in 2008.
We saw war, surging inflation, and the Federal Reserve hiking rates for the first time since 2018. There are now worries the Fed will tighten policy too far which could tip the economy into a recession.
Heading into 2023, these concerns may continue to weigh on sentiment.
Fear may spread faster than greed.
Warren Buffett famously said to “be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” When the market drops, the fear sentiment is high, and when the market rises, greed dominates. RISING prices will attract buyers, and conversely, falling prices attract sellers.
Therefore, a bull market may continue for years, while a bear market often fades quickly and in a panic. For instance, since 1950, there have been about 5 times as many 52-week highs as 52-week lows!
Over time, stocks do go up, but they can experience staggering setbacks that make you question any of your investment choices.
The key long-term returns are focusing on factors WITHIN YOUR CONTROL… This is a formula of patience, a strong stomach, and proper risk management. Optimism? Turning water into wine:
Many inexperienced investors lose hope during times like this. But for those that are still contribute money (i.e., into a 401k) to their future, this market should not
be met with anxiety, but with open arms!
If you were contributing $200 every month to any index fund, you would have been able to purchase ONE share at the beginning of 2015. By the end of 2021, that same $200 only got you only two-fifths of a share. Thus, your money is able to work harder, that is LESS BUYS YOU MORE.
Bear markets are no fun. However, this is when great investors are made and from where long-term returns come. The dollars you invest on the way down will be worth more on the way back up.
I trust that you were not expecting to hear how long inflation will last, or to measure its long-term economic impact, or to glean any insights into exactly when the markets will eventually recover. Neither I nor does anyone else have any idea of those things.
I do not claim to know what’s next or when the next 25% move down in the stock market happen...I only know which direction the next 100% movement in the stock market is going to be.
Be well and invest wisely!

Help for Parents
By Dr. David YudellIt seems like a simple question. But often parents are treated as if they should already know the answer. When the school calls and tells you that your child is misbehaving or acting out many questions are sure to follow. Do they do those behaviors at home? Has the school done anything to try to correct the behaviors? Regardless of the answers, the next question you may ask is what are you to do about it?
There are books. There are parenting magazines, classes or forums online. There are neighbors and relatives who will be happy to tell you what they did with their own child. But when the answers do not work or you cannot find a credible source, you may ask yourself…what am I supposed to do?
There are a few basics that should work in most situations. The first one is to talk with your child. Whether they are 7 or 17, engage them in conversation. This will allow you to have a straight forward (and hopefully comfortable) talk with them when the situation (such as the school calling) arises. Tell them what happened and ask them to share their explanation of the situation. There are times when the communication is already strained or the problems are more severe but for the sake of this article
we will start at the beginning.
Give them the benefit of the doubt. The truth is often in the middle. Try not to assume that they are immediately at fault, but also be careful not to jump to their defense too quickly. Take the time to work out the problem with a focus on the solution.
Punishment versus reward is a frequent topic in our office. Research universally shows that people will work harder to earn (rewards, privileges, money) than they will to avoid consequences. Use that as the motivation to change behavior. And if any situation begins to repeat or escalate reach out to a professional for guidance. In our current world, many parents are working with Psychologists, therapists and similar professionals to gain support as they raise their family. For most of us there are few things as important as our children. Reaching out to an expert can go a long way towards getting us the answers AND providing the support we need as a parent.

• Growth has also taken place in our approach to teaching and learning as we are a Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS)! All students and teachers have received brand new iPads with free data to assist them in learning. We are becoming responsible digital citizens at the Glen!
• Our loveable Violet is now on campus to assist in meeting students’ emotional needs daily. Meet her in our Peer Counseling room. We love our Violet!
• We have installed a food forest at FGMS, and we are looking for volunteers to help us grow! We saw bright and robust sunflowers bloom on our campus at the start of the school year! We have currently grown strawberries, spinach, tomatoes, plums, and herbs.
• PAWS with Mrs. G is a learning session held monthly with the principal which involves helping parents, guardians and community members grow in their knowledge and support of our wildcats! How can parents support students and/or our school?
Just be there! Ensure students are prepared for school, up to date with their assignments and grades, and following all school rules. This kind of support contributes to an environment focused on student learning and growth. We are always looking for approved volunteers to help around campus. Parents and guardians are invited to join PTO and attend monthly SAC and PTO meetings.

As we approach the second semester, our teachers are working diligently with the implementation of BEST standards and FAST assessments. Classroom teachers are focused on targeted instruction to meet students’ needs and close the learning gaps. Learning experiences are planned intentionally at Hunt Elementary. As the year progresses, we will maintain momentum on our academic goals while integrating character-building opportunities and exciting experiences.
Our students are provided with the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Our goal is to promote kindness. We have our Reading Buddies initiative where we team up our primary and intermediate students to alternate reading to each other. Students select a book of choice or are assigned a book by the teacher at their appropriate reading level to read to their buddies. Students meet at a comfortable designated area to enjoy the reading experience. We
want to build a strong sense of community in our school and promote literacy. Our Safety Patrol group is a success, as we watch our fifth graders serve as role models for our youngsters, as they assist in arrival and dismissal. We are looking forward to our upcoming activities! We have Curriculum Night, Literacy Week, Black History Month activities, and Bookfair in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to having our students, parents, and community participation. We encourage and value parent involvement at our school. We invite our families and community to attend our monthly School Advisory Forum and School Advisory Council meetings. Please visit our school website for the dates Hunt Elementary / Homepage (browardschools.com). Also, follow us on Twitter @HuntElementary.

Happy 2023 from the Raider Nation! We are excited to start off this new year with our students, helping them achieve their academic and personal goals along the way.
The Bullseye Club Ramblewood Middle School’s Speech and Debate students continue to attend competitions in mass. To close 2022, forty-seven students competed in eight different events and brought home seventeen medals in December, up from twelve in November. Trending Times Journalism continues to innovate the pages and designs of the yearbook. This year they have collaborated to create eleven new and exciting spreads to showcase the memories from this school year. This year’s book promises to be stunning in design and content.
The Mentoring Tomorrows Leaders and the Raider Step Team will be participating and performing at the Dr. Martin Luther King Leadership and Service Forum in Coral Springs this spring. Many of the students have served in the community during Thanksgiving and holidays partnering with Dare to Care Community Outreach, Broward Health Coral Springs, and other community service projects.
Also, four MTL Mentors were featured on PBS’s “Your South Florida” discussing Financial Literacy with Junior Achievement. In addition, on of our very own teachers,
Written By: Courtney Russo 6th/7th/8th Intensive Reading TeacherMrs. Washington Collins, was interviewed by PBS speaking about the impact of Junior Achievement curriculum in her 8th grade scholars’ lives.
RMS Drama club has been busy at work the last two quarters and are currently gearing up for their Spring Play “Bully” which will take place March 28th and 29th at Ramblewood Middle School.
In sports, the Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball teams worked hard and had great seasons. We look forward to Flag Football along with Track & Field in the springtime.

Riverglades is excited about the many different activities and happenings during the spring semester. This semester, the SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Promise Club will lead different activities each month to promote kindness and practices that make our school a safe place for all. These activities range from “Spread the Love” Heart Grams to decorating common areas with words that promote peace and school safety. Members of this club are selected fifth grade students who want to lead the change in these efforts.
Each year Riverglades participates in the Day of Service and Love to commemorate the 17 lives lost and those injured as a result of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas on February 14, 2018. Our school participates in spreading love and kindness to the community by collecting items for local places in need like SOS Village, the Humane Society, and food banks. True to our LifeSkills curriculum, our students and staff demonstrate generosity by going above and beyond with their donations. Last year, we were able to have truckloads of donations, and look forward to being able to do even more this year. Each class takes an active role in the donation and collection process which allows them to see how their giving positively impacts others.
Another upcoming event this semester is the Kid’s Heart Challenge. Our Gators participate by registering for the Kids Heart Challenge and donating to the cause. This drive ends with the exciting Jump rope for Heart Challenge where students show off their jump roping skills. The students look forward to the Kids Heart Challenge every year and diligently practice their jump roping skills to get ready for the big day. Once all donations are in, the students gear up for Slime Day. This is an event where the top student donors get to slime our P.E. Coach and Administration. From start to finish, the Kids Heart Challenge is a fun and rewarding experience for our students. Riverglades is proud to be the leading school in donations last year and plan to continue to support this program.
As you can see, the Riverglades Gators are keeping quite busy. Although the academic demands of the school year are high, at Riverglades, it is important for us that we create space for our them to participate in extra-curricular activities that are fun and character-building so that they can grow into well-rounded members of the community. Riverglades Elementary is located at 7400 Parkside Dr., Parkland 33076. Their principal is Joanne Seltzer. They can be reached at (754) 322-8200.
Parkside has been busy over these last few months celebrating the Holidays. We had a wonderful turn out to our Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. We were so pleased to be able to bring this back face to face this year. We served over 1,200 staff, students and families. It is such a joy inviting our families in to have a special Thanksgiving Lunch here. A BIG thank you to our wonderful cafeteria staff for all that they did in preparing and serving all of these families.
We want to thank our PTA for organizing several activities for our families and students as well throughout these last few months. Students had a wonderful day celebrating “Polar Express” and a visit from the South Florida Firetruck. The students always love pretending to play in the snow.
PTA also had a really nice turn out at our Family Movie Night. This is one of their give backs to our families. What a fun night this was for all and we are thankful for all that they do for our school. Over the next few weeks, we will begin our planning for next school year. Our Kindergarten round-up and 23-24 intention forms will be going home soon. Please be on the look-out for these in your children’s folders. Thankful to all of our Parkside Community for all you do for our school.

We wish a Happy New Year to the Coral Springs community and the Ram Families! We are already in the 3rd quarter of the 2022-23 school year, which means we are less than halfway to the end.
In December, we hosted Dinner with D.A.D.S. (Dedicated and Devoted Supporters). This is an event where males that participate in students’ lives were invited to eat dinner with their child, nephew, brother, etc. They also got a chance to network and sign up to volunteer at upcoming events. It was a fantastic event, coordinated by our awesome PTO.
We also invited parents to see their kids perform during our Winter Holiday Show. Student participants from all grade levels performed holiday songs and staff members collaborated and surprised everyone with a fabulous, well-
choreographed piece. It was standing room only.
This year, our Chess Team competed for the first time in the Chess Competition. I am elated to report that we placed fifth. Our students competed fiercely under the direction of Mr. Alvaro Picado, P.E. teacher, Chess and Debate Coach. Kudos to the team!
Our PTO scheduled a Family Night at Pizza Carousel. It was a very successful event. The Ram community and staff enjoyed delicious foods, while supporting another Coral Springs business partner. We have many more events and activities coming soon. We can’t wait to share them with you. Ramblewood Elementary is located at 8950 Shadowwood Blvd in Coral Springs. READING PROGRAMS
PARKLAND LIBRARY READING BUDDIES (K–5TH GRADE)
Sessions held on Mondays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are developed in an enjoyable manner. The Parkland Juniorettes are high school girls dedicated to making a difference. This group has partnered with the Parkland Library to help younger students with reading. Building partnerships between our high-achieving high school students and elementary-age children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. (Note: On the Mondays that school is closed Reading Buddies will not meet.) Registration is not required; just meet at the desk in the center of the library. Visit www.cityofparkland.org/library or call (954) 757-4207.
