Dear Weston Residents, This November 2021, it will be a year since having been sworn in as the 4th Mayor of the Great City of Weston! While the Oath of Office Ceremony was low-key and limited to attendance, it was an honor to be sworn in by Former Mayor, Daniel J. Stermer. As a former Commissioner (2016-2020), I had the distinct opportunity to work aside Mayor Stermer and I learned a great deal from his leadership. Thank you, Mayor Stermer, for your 16 years of service to our community! As a former Commissioner and now Mayor, I have been serving in a leadership role since the beginning of COVID-19 and have witnessed the impact it has had on our community over the course of the past 18+ months. To begin, schools closed their doors to in-person attendance and transitioned to online learning. While a challenge and shift in delivery, the most difficult issue we all faced in our community was the lack of social engagement through local activities and sports. Many of the communications I received over the past year had mainly to do with park closures, both City parks and local community recreational playgrounds. Without question, these closures and the absence of team sports took a toll on our children both emotionally and physically. Understandably, with the lifting of closures, we were all excited when residents could return to the courts, fields, and workout facilities. Children could begin to participate in team sports, others could take their children to playgrounds, and still others could congregate for community events. This past July 2021, the City of Weston hosted fireworks, music, and activities in the Regional Park on the 3rd, followed by a Parade on July 4th! Both events were welcomed by many and it was a delight to see smiles and hear laughter from the community! In the upcoming months there are innumerable events occurring in the City that residents can attend. For example, the Outdoor Concert Series, the 24th Annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow, the Get Fit Challenge, Movies in the Park, the Winter Safety Expo, and much more. Many of these events will be listed in this invaluable resource, Sports & Activities - Weston Directory, as well as the events calendar of WestonFL. org/Events and in the Newsday Tuesday e-Newsletter www.westonfl.org/residents/connect-with-yourcity/newsday-tuesday-enewsletter . In closing, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the 25th Anniversary of the City of Weston! Yes, by many standards we are a young city as compared with other municipalities. However, in this short time, Weston has received many awards and recognition. In 2021, Weston was listed as The Best Small Cities to Start a Small Business; Ranked #1 for the Best Cities to Live in Broward County and #10 for the Best Cities to Live in South Florida; The 2021 Broward County Complete Streets Community Award Winner; Selected as one of 50 top cities out of 30,000 across the country as Americas Best Cities to Live, and The Telly Awards which honor excellence in video and television across all screens, including non-broadcast, social media, series, television, commercials & marketing and more. For a complete list, please go to www.westonfl.org/about/ awards-and-recognition While Weston has received many notable rewards and recognition, without question, the best and most rewarding thing about living in Weston are the residents! Happy 25th Anniversary to the City of Weston Residents! Until next time,
Margaret “Peggy” Brown Mayor, City of Weston

Leaving Town?
• Remember to lock your doors, gates, windows and storage sheds. • Use timers to operate lights at night. • Put a hold on your mail, newspapers and package deliveries. Consider having a trusted friend or neighbor stop by to collect these items. Having a full mailbox is a dead giveaway that you are not home. • If possible, leave a vehicle in your driveway. and unbelievable deals. Criminals send emails and place ads hoping that you’ll be enticed by the promise of saving money or obtaining the “must-have” item of the year. • Avoid clicking on links even if an email or advertisement looks like it is coming from a site you trust. Cyber criminals love to impersonate your favorite shopping sites by sending you fake emails that can look exactly like the real thing. Criminals are hoping that their fake emails will trick you into clicking the link. Clicking these links can allow them to download malware to your computer or may direct you to a fake page that will try to collect your login information or payment details. • Watch out for fake delivery notification emails and/or text messages. Criminals are banking on the fact that you are going to be expecting more package deliveries during this time of year. If you’ve ordered something, use the tracking link on your order history page from the website you purchased the items from. If you received a delivery notification, but are not expecting a delivery, navigate to the parcel service’s website directly and enter the tracking number from the suspect email into their online package tracking form. • Monitor your bank and card activity diligently. Sometimes, no matter how careful we are, we can still become victims. Always check your statements for unauthorized transactions. It’s best to pay with a credit card, not using your bank account; you’ll get better liability protection.

f you are concerned about your children’s college education, now is the perfect time to start saving. Your objectives may not be clear yet, but our Agents at New York Life Insurance Company can surely help you decide which is the best savings strategy according to your expectations. For example, you can start saving as much as you can today and then implement a monthly incremental plan. A little effort goes a long way! There are times when economic decisions can mark a before and after. With a plan and a lot of discipline in its fulfillment, you will achieve your objectives. Consulting with and having the immediate support of people with experience and the necessary wisdom is of vital importance. Everyone needs guidance on economic issues and on what rules and regulations you will surely have to face to be able to meet the high costs of our children’s university tuition combined with the commitments that we usually have to fulfill. Remember that knowledge is power. Statistics say there is $1.6 trillion in total student loan debt in the United States, 45 million Americans have some form of student loan debt, and student loan debt is the second-largest source of consumer debt, after mortgages. These student loan debts affect financial behavior long after college since they must use part of their monthly income to deal with that debt. This impacts their financial situation and the ability to achieve other financial goals such as buying a house or car, studying for a master’s degree, and starting a family. For these reasons, parents have a great commitment to help their children study at a college or university and develop professionally. This will open up greater job opportunities without having to attend to the payment of student loans. We must consider several things when building your financial savings plan, these are the period of your life, budget, risk tolerance, market conditions, and the number of children. Creating a professionally tailored plan that considers your unique circumstances will yield the best results for your goals. Get started now! Call a New York Life Agent, and let’s strategize together with the best financial future for you and your family. There are many financial tools devised for this purpose, and you are sure to find a plan that best suits the needs of your family.

tudents, teachers, staff, and community members recently celebrated the opening of Cypress Bay High School’s new 62 classroom building addition during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, October 11. The beautiful, state-of-the art building now serves approximately 1,500 students at a time. This multiyear project is now a reality for the students and staff at the Bay. During the ceremony, Principal Kassandra Fried shared her praise and spoke of the excitement for her students and her staff. The ceremony took place outside the new building heart and center surrounded by the support of our City of Weston community members and Broward County Public Schools District officials. BCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright spoke about the admiration she had for our teachers, staff, and students during a worldwide pandemic and how the success of the construction of the new building would now be the permanent home of our teachers and students who, for so long, occupied the portables on the CBHS Campus. The lightning bolt shaped structure draws much attention to itself with the many functional and state-of-the-art features. The building surrounding has an open feel and its industrial features make every classroom an experience for our students. Our physics labs

mindfulness, we are grounded in our core of providing rigorous academics for all of our students. As I continue to build on last year’s relationships, I look forward to more opportunities to get to know the community. This year, we are hosting quarterly events to showcase the wonderful work students and teachers are doing at TTMS. We are extremely happy for the return of our art class, along with our strong band program and drama performances. We cannot wait to begin performing in front of families! My goal is to make all families feel welcomed. Tequesta has a large number of students from Latin American countries. As the first Hispanic principal at Tequesta, I can relate to their journey and it is with great pride that I welcome helping them along their path to be college and career ready. We have kicked off this year with a strong partnership with PTA. I hope that as parents you are connected and remain involved in your child’s education. Please visit our website regularly as you can find information on academics, SEL activities, athletics, clubs and much more. Tequesta Trace Middle School is located at 1800 Indian Trace in Weston. equesta Trace Middle School (TTMS) has a long-standing tradition of being a top-rated school. As the new principal last year, my focus was on building meaningful relationships with students, teachers and parents. Covid provided challenges, but the barriers were not enough to prevent the start of these relationships. During virtual community meetings, it gave me a chance to get to know the community and the families I serve. As students began to come back to school, I had a chance to learn what they envisioned for Tequesta’s future. In my meetings with small student groups, I learned that students wanted opportunities to take other elective classes. Aligned with the district’s initiative of Reimaging Middle School, we began looking at providing students new course offerings. This year, we were able to add Global Studies in 6th grade, two Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship classes where students can create their own business or business application. Finally, we added a Latinos in Action class that empowers Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities. Once we can secure transportation, students will get the opportunity to mentor younger students at the elementary school and serve as mentors. As we focus on the entire child with social emotional learning (SEL) activities and
Stop Violence Week. Choose Peace Stop Violence is an annual observance that focuses on creating safe and violence free environments where peace and inclusivity are celebrated. We celebrated this event with school wide activities such as guided meditations in English and Spanish, wearing white, creating a peace chain with peaceful messages that each student wrote, and wearing clothing that represents peace. CIE also partnered with Starbucks who donated cup sleeves to our school so that students could decorate them with positive images, quotes, or just vibrant colors. The Starbucks at Weston Town Center placed the sleeves on their cups during Peace Week to put a smile on the faces of their patrons. here are many things happening at Country Isles Elementary. Some of the initiatives we fostered so far are Dads Take Your Child to School Day and Peace Week. Dads take your child to school day is an initiative from the Florida Department of Education that highlights and supports fatherhood engagement in education. Research shows that children whose dads, uncles, brothers, grandfathers or any other male figures are engaged in their education, increase their success in various ways. On September 22, we celebrated dads and male figures who brought their children to school in different ways such as giving them stickers as they walked or drove their children to school, promoting the initiative via flyer, social media and Parent Link, and thanking the dads with a message on our schools’ marquee. During September 20th-24th we celebrated Choose Peace

he Latinos in Action class at Falcon Cove is an excellent program in which students are given the chance to make a difference in the community. The students do numerous projects and hold charity events to help kids in need. As role models of the school, the members of Latinos in Action encourage their peers to make good decisions and demonstrate how to be better citizens for the community. Currently, Latinos in Action (LIA) is hosting a fundraiser for bicycles and helmets to distribute to students around Broward County. To raise the money, LIA is selling two lollipops for a dollar. 100% of the proceeds will be used towards buying bicycles to help students get to and from school each day. Eighth-grade LIA member Luis Diaz explains, “It’s nice to be able to help people. You feel great doing the right thing, and it’s an honor. There are kids out in the world who don’t have the money or resources to get nice things, so it’s great to be able to help those kids out. Every time someone buys a lollipop, I feel happy because that dollar is going to a kid in need.” October is Hispanic Heritage month. Latinos in Action students shared presentations of their countries of origin with the school. They decorated displays representing each country in Latin America and had a variety of cultural foods and snacks for students to learn about and enjoy. Hely Rodriguez, Falcon Cove Latinos in Action advisor, said, “When somebody represents their country, they do it for pride. When you represent your own country, you’re showing people where you’re from, and it’s a source of pride. You let them know what costumes
are worn, what kind of dresses they use, what kind of food they eat, etc. You have to make sure that you put your country in the best light.” Rodriguez went on to say, “The kids did a great job by doing that, and I think that they understood what being from that particular country means [to them]. They were able to educate everyone around the school on how to understand different cultures from Latin America.” In addition, Latinos in Action students are in charge of recycling for the school. The students in 4th and 8th period go around to each classroom every Friday and empty the recycling bins. They encourage students to recycle, reduce waste, and help the environment. It is a great initiative here at Falcon Cove to help the community and make the school a better place for students. “We go to each classroom, get all the recycling and take it downstairs to the recycling bins. There are different recycling bins [for the different materials] around the school. There are bins for paper, plastic, and cans”, they say. They continue to explain why recycling is important for the environment, “There are huge garbage patches in the ocean. We recycle so there is not as much.” The Latinos in Action program at Falcon Cove is an amazing program for students of Latino heritage. Students work to create a positive impact for the community and represent the Latin culture. They show patriotism towards their country, and what it feels like to be closer to the culture and lifestyle that their parents and family know and love. Falcon Cove Middle School is located at 4251 Bonaventure Blvd. in Weston. Their Principal is Steven Carruth. They can be reached at (754) 323-3200.

ith the 2020-2021 school year behind us, we are all still faced with the academic and social challenges caused by the pandemic. Last year was a uniquely challenging year for teachers and students, and it is no surprise that it has left its mark—on student learning and on student well-being. One of the biggest challenges facing our community, is how to close these achievement gaps for our young learners. Many students, especially in Kindergarten and 1st grade, are attending school for the first time, causing feelings of anxiety and stress. Helping our students overcome some of these challenges was without a doubt a priority. It wasn’t long before Manatee Bay Elementary’s PTA implemented a program that would do just that! Manatee Movers is a volunteer based program, designed to help MOVE students closer to their academic and social goals by providing extra support in reading, math, and SEL (Social Emotional Learning). The program was developed by former 4th grade teacher at Manatee Bay, Tammy Broderick, who saw a need to help both students and teachers bridge the learning gap by providing additional academic and social emotional support in a small group setting. The program provides students with targeted instruction focusing on areas of weakness in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics and Decoding, and Math in the lower grades, and Math and Reading Comprehension in the upper grades. Mini lessons/ activities are engaging, fun and interactive with the use of hands-on manipulatives, games and teacher-provided lessons to supplement classroom instruction. “My students look forward to Manatee Movers and don’t even realize they are learning because they are having so much fun,” says Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Vital. The
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) component of the program helps students build relationships and improve social skills as they share stories, play games and participate in team building activities. Manatee Movers is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in the school community. It gives parents a chance to build relationships with teachers and staff, as well as bond with their groups. Both students and volunteers look forward to their bi-weekly meetings with enthusiasm and can’t wait for their next meeting. Manatee Mover, Coco Banks, explains how the program has given parents a way to contribute in helping children catch up on lost learning. “I enjoy helping my small group of first graders work on their literacy skills. This is such an uplifting endeavor to be a part of!” she exclaimed. With more than a dozen dedicated volunteers, the program has reached grades K-3rd grade and is still recruiting as it hopes to span all grade levels in the near future. The program has received very positive feedback from both teachers and students. It truly takes a village. Manatee Bay Principal Hedman-Devaughn added, “This program has been a piece to the puzzle of closing the achievement gap. I love seeing the way these volunteers relate to the children. Tammy has done an outstanding job training them and working with our staff to provide the necessary materials. We are super fortunate to have such a caring and supportive parent base.” More volunteers can bring greater results. Please reach out to the school if you are interested.
