Happy July, Spotlight family!

The buzziest—and busiest— weekend of the summer is here, and the Hamptons seems more packed than ever! I’m excited about this summer.

I feel like there’s a new wave of energy Out East with restaurants and stores opening, even some new transportation— there’s a lot happening, and it’s great to see.

Some of the things I’m looking forward to this month: picking up my favorite food at Loaves & Fishes, long dinners at Le Bilboquet with my family, getting in some beach days, and honestly, just enjoying the fresh air, which I appreciate more and more amidst city and travel life.

I’m always inspired by the Hamptons community, and as much as it’s a place for relaxation, it’s actually a hub for creatives who use this backdrop, like me, to pursue their passions, whether in fashion, food, media, photography, you name it.

With that being said, it felt only natural to dedicate an issue of Spotlight to the Hamptons creative crowd, and we’re celebrating some of the finest in this issue. For our cover, reality star Lindsay Hubbard of Bravo’s Summer House takes the lead! She’s had quite the public year on the hit show—if you’re a pop culture junkie, you’re already obsessed with following her life.

IN FULL

swing

She started out her career as a publicist and found fame on the TV series, which not everyone out here is thrilled about (as filming in our beloved community is a bit controversial). But as someone who stars in a show that films in the Hamptons and has been summering here for years, we wanted to shine the Spotlight on her. Read our exclusive interview with Lindsay on page 34.

As for our creatives feature, indulge in my Q&As with Fern Mallis and Nicole Miller, both of whom I’ll be interviewing live at the Canoe Place Inn & Cottages on Sunday, July 14. You’ll find details on how to sign up on page 10. Also in this issue: party pages from our summer kickoff celebrations; a day in the life of Montauk It Girl Sasha Benz; lots of fashionable finds in blue; and more.

Here’s to a great Fourth of July and month ahead! And please tag us with a pic of you and your copy of the mag. We love to see it!

Q&A: STACEY COHEN

Real Estate Agent, Saunders & Associates

Stacey, tell our readers about yourself!

I moved from Manhattan to the Hamptons 10 years ago and I live here year-round. I have a fabulous son. I’m lucky to love what I do—selling real estate! And what about your background in fashion?

I have 30-plus years experience in manufacturing women’s apparel at every level. One of my biggest accomplishments was to develop a junior department for America’s largest retailer.

How did your time as a fashion exec lead you to real estate? I was creative on the fashion side, so I tend to run my real estate business from a creative approach. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some fantastic interior designers who allow me to participate in the creative process.

What towns do you primarily focus on Out East?

Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Wainscott, East Hampton, Sag Harbor Village, Shelter Island. What design aesthetic is most desired by home buyers now?

Muted, earth tones and minimal but not empty. Osprey House designed by Heiberg Cummings design team on Shelter Island is a perfect example of how people want to live in the Hamptons. Favorite Fourth of July tradition?

Watching the fireworks over Sag Harbor Village on a boat is a great Hamptons tradition.

PLUS! Q&A with BookHampton Owner

What authors will be visiting BookHampton this summer?

In July, we’ll host Gil Schafer, one of the leading experts on contemporary traditional architecture; Emma Rosenblum (Bad Summer People), and a panel event featuring authors with summer’s hottest thrillers. Not to mention, you, Zibby! What’s one secret to running a great bookstore?

It’s a sometimes hard-tocapture mixture of art and science: great books, loyal customers, exceptional customer service, strong foot traffic, inventory management, and the occasional rainy day— no golf or tennis equals more books and puzzles sold! What role does your store play in the community?

BookHampton is a warm, welcoming community space for book lovers and readers of all ages. It’s a place where people can gather, run into old friends, and make new ones. We offer a diverse range of titles for every interest. Where is your favorite place to read in the Hamptons?

My backyard patio, in the shade on a wicker chair and ottoman, or in the early evening on a beach chair dug into the sand on Main Beach. Maybe with a glass of rosé.

Wölffer Ways

WÖLFFER ESTATE CELEBRATES SUMMER IN A BOTTLE’S NEW SAUVIGNON BLANC

Our oenophile contributor talks about the genesis of Wölffer’s iconic Summer in a Bottle and the latest addition to her brand’s beloved libations. BY JOEY WÖLFFER

When my brother Marc, chief strategy officer, and I took over the reins of Wölffer Estate Vineyard after our father died in an accident in 2008, we had no idea where our partnership would take us. Shortly thereafter, Roman, our winemaker of 32 years, became a partner, and my husband, Max, became CEO. When we first sat down to discuss ideas and opportunities, the concept of “Summer in a Bottle” was one of those ideas. My friends have always said that Wölffer is synonymous with summer. The name was used for an ad campaign, and the design proposal blew us all away. Florals, fauna, and butterflies danced around the page, it was at that moment that Roman said, “Why not make a rosé and actually call it Summer in a Bottle?” We all loved it and created our first vintage in 2014. We made 1,500 cases and sold out in three weeks. Each year, we grew production. I remember an article coming out in The New York Post, “Rosé

running dangerously low in the Hamptons.” This was the year

our Summer in a Bottle Rosé sold out in August, and we knew we were onto something huge. Now, having produced rosé on three continents, distributing in 36 states and nine countries, we’re proud to have become one of the world’s leading quality wine producers.

Our father was an entrepreneur, a risk taker who loved to travel and had a vision for growing grapes and making rosé here in the Hamptons when most people laughed and said it was impossible. I was more of a rebellious teenager, with an eye

for fashion and marketing, so I worked in different corporate positions before opening my own business in 2010. I never thought I’d end up in the wine business, but when my father tragically passed, and the family estate had settled, I couldn’t imagine not being a part of continuing this legacy. Now 10 years later, the four of us have taken the vineyard from a small, local business to a national and international brand. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary, we couldn’t think of a better time to introduce Summer in a Bottle Sauvignon Blanc—a clean, crisp, and bright wine that perfectly reflects our roots. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Hamptons, the bottle design mirrors the landscape surrounding the vineyard. From my favorite sunset beach walks with my girls, to hikes in Hither Hills, there’s so much beauty to appreciate, and every element of the label reflects the winery’s dedication to sustainable winemaking. We’re constantly looking

ahead and believe in this wine that we’ve invested in, so we’re planting more Sauv Blanc with partnering vineyards to ensure we can continue this path for years to come.

With the many summer holidays and our Wine Stand sunsets ahead, this is going to be my drink of choice for summer! Whether I’m going to a friend’s home for dinner, spending a day at the beach, or simply lounging around the pool or patio, Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect companion and pairs well with just about anything from oysters, scallops, fish ceviche to fresh vegetables. It delivers sophistication with every sip. Not to mention, the bottle is beautiful. I’d suggest picking up a few bottles for yourself or giving them as gifts. Cheers! T

YOUR GUIDE TO HOSTING

A SPLASHY PO OL PART Y

It’s the quintessential summer gathering, and July 4th is the perfect time to throw one. If you’re hosting guests for a fun escape from the heat, consider the following elements to ensure that everyone has a wet and wild time!

s the Fourth of July rolls around, why not host a star-spangled bash poolside? Here are some things that will help make it flow!

REFRESHMENTS

No pool party is complete without delicious food and tasty drinks. In addition to barbecue classics, offer a spread of vegetable and fruit platters; you can make the presentation special by carving the produce into floral shapes. Make sure you also have popsicles in your freezer. Keep everyone hydrated with an assortment of beverages, including soft drinks and cocktails. Stephen Talkhouse just launched its own line of canned drinks, so you can enjoy your favorites in the comfort of your own backyard. Our fave is the Hampton Mule, a classic combination of vodka mixed with fresh ginger and lime. For extra fun, allow guests to sip from a floating pool tray.

TOWELS

Around your pool, you’ll need plenty of seating and lounging options for guests to relax and soak up the sun between dips. We’re living in the golden age of towels from brands like Missoni, Saatva, and Parachute, among others. You can opt for plushness or patterns, and make sure that there are at least two fresh towels for every anticipated guest.

MUSIC

Entertainment is key to keeping the party vibes going. Set up

a playlist of upbeat music to create the perfect ambiance, whether it’s classic summer tunes, top dance hits, or your favorite party songs.

SUNSCREEN

Sun protection is essential for a day spent outdoors. Open all possible umbrellas, so guests can seek refuge from the sun during the hottest parts of the day. Provide sunscreen for them to use and encourage reapplying often, especially after swimming. Invisible sunscreen gel is all the rage, and I love Dune Suncare’s award-winning version with SPF 30.

SEASONAL ATTIRE

Dress yourself in a cute bathing suit, coverup, sunglasses, and accessories. The more colorful, the better.

With thoughtful planning, you can create a pool party that everyone will remember fondly. So gather your people, heat the pool, and dive into a day of summer heaven. T

WHAT IS SU MMER SHAD ING AND IS IT HAPPENING TO YOU?

All about the seasonal dating trend and what it means when it occurs, explained by our resident dating expert. BY

Well, we made it to July 4th! The summer is peaking, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on our dating situations. Are you in a relationship that you want to step away from? Is your potential new partner showing signs of stepping away from you? Summer shading is the trend where when it gets sunny and nice out, relationships get placed on the back burner or “in the shade.” If you’re looking for some signs that this could be occurring in your life, here are four telltale signs.

b Texting Less Often

You know your texting cadence with a person. We all have great intuition. If you can tell that the person you’re dating has become a worse communicator, it’s the biggest sign that they’re trying to leave you in the shade for the summer. If you don’t hear from them for more than

24 hours, it’s safe to assume they’re dating other people. If they’re not dating other people, they just simply don’t want to give you the wrong impression now that the summer has arrived.

it’s another sign that they want to signal to their social circle that they’re available. If they aren’t

b Hiding You From Their Social Media

It’s not a deal-breaker if someone doesn’t post you on their social media, especially if you’re not “official.” However, if there’s an intentional avoidance of even including you on their Stories or reposting something you’ve shared,

interacting with your posts and only DM you but don’t publicly like your stuff, that’s another sign that they’re looking to make sure your situationship doesn’t become more.

b

Traveling a Ton But Never Including You

Many of us take vacation trips in the summer, but there are quick weekend getaways where it’s easy to include someone if you like them and are enjoying your time together. If the person you’re seeing seems to be away

every other weekend or never once invites you over to the share house they’re renting, that’s a major red flag that they intend to summer shade.

b

Preoccupied When You’re Together

So maybe you’re seeing this person less, but when you do see them, they also aren’t giving you the time of day. It seems like they’re more excited to see the waiter or to look over your shoulder to see who they’re going to run into. If this is behavior you’re experiencing, it’s clear that this person wants to put you in the shade and pick you back up when it starts getting colder outside.

If you’re noticing any of these behaviors, the best thing you can do is get ahead of it. Why should you be left in the shade with nothing to say for yourself? If you sense this is going on, make sure you have your eggs in multiple baskets so that you don’t leave yourself vulnerable to having your heart broken by a summer shader. Matching their energy is key. And you deserve someone who wants you in all seasons equally!

MISSION: ACCOMPLISHED

The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach has become one of the most beloved destinations in the country—and branding is at the core of its success. Here’s how the owners created a mission statement and followed a few simple rules that can help you build a following as devoted as theirs.

The Colony Hotel has been a renowned Palm Beach institution for 76 years. When my husband, Andrew, and I purchased The Colony in 2016, our goal was to nurture this nostalgia while also building on the cultural relevance and excitement of modern-day Palm Beach. We set forth to create a brand that would allow our guests to fully immerse themselves in the Palm Beach that people know and love, while experiencing something new and fresh at the same time. Keeping a few cardinal rules in mind, seven years later we have a brand that is representative.

1. Write down your vision. I know it may sound cliché, but when you write down your vision, you commit yourself to your goals. There’s a sort of permanence and intention in putting something down on paper, not to mention it serves as a reference point if you ever get lost. For us, this was our mission statement. One of the first things I did upon purchasing The Colony was sit down and write how I envisioned the hotel, and where I wanted it to be. While I didn’t know the hospitality business as well as I knew PR and marketing, Andrew and I each had decades of experience as guests of The Colony. Our mission statement became the place where all that became possible.

2. Observe, listen, learn. This is a basic rule for life—not just for brand building. I feel fortunate to have had many years to observe The Colony

and its surroundings. Blissfully unaware of the business and any operational challenges, I was able to sit back and see how guests interacted with the hotel, what worked and what didn’t. Instead of jumping in and frantically making changes—

which is easy to do when you’re eager to build something—take a deep breath and observe, listen, and learn…about your guests, clients, and community.

3. Details matter when creating a brand. From day one, we wanted to create an experience that ignited all the senses; one that was much more than just a hotel stay, but rather a way of life. It was this vision that led us to develop activations and partnerships with the themes of design, fashion, art, fitness, and music, helping to cultivate our brand while offering guests a truly authentic Palm Beach experience. Find your distinguishing difference, and then lean in.

4. Community comes first. Guests will come and go, but the local community is here to stay. It’s important for us as a business is to get involved in the community in a deeper way. We lead the hotel with a service-driven

culture and prioritize giving back and contributing to the organizations that keep Palm Beach, well, Palm Beach. When you put your community first, it becomes easier to make important decisions; what’s best for your business and what’s best for the community often align.

5. Never compromise. It’s also important to never compromise when it comes to your brand. While one wrong misstep is unlikely to break your brand, it can oftentimes be enough to make the wrong impression. Once you start to make concessions, it becomes easier to do it again and again, and suddenly, you’ve diluted your brand. Although it can be difficult, never settle for less than your brand standard, and if you lose your way, remember to always look back to your mission statement.

Starting a brand from scratch or redefining an existing brand is no easy feat. It can feel like an uphill battle at times, but it’s also the most rewarding experience if done successfully. And while everyone’s definition of success is different, I believe that following these simple steps will make the process more seamless. Remember to always be confident in your brand, never hesitate to revert back to your mission statement, and always be distinctly you— perhaps the biggest cardinal rule of all. It will pay off for you. It certainly has for us. T

STARS, STRIPES, & SUNSHINE: JULY 4TH DELIGHTS TO DISCOVER ON THE EAST END

There’s nothing quite like spending the Fourth of July in the Hamptons. It’s a holiday filled with a mix of relaxation, celebration, and local charm. Here’s a guide to making the most of your time Out East this year.

WHERE TO WATCH THE PARADE

Wherever you are in the Hamptons, we’ve got you covered with your parade spot. Join in the patriotic occasion at the Southampton Village Parade, the oldest (established in 1942!) and largest on Long Island. The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. and include creative floats, marching bands, veteran groups, local organizations, and decorated vehicles. Be sure to don red, white, and blue attire as you march or watch the procession along Main Street.

WHERE TO SEE FIREWORKS

Coopers Beach, Southampton

Coopers Beach is a popular spot to watch fireworks in Southampton. Its wide sandy shores provide ample space for families and friends to gather and enjoy the show. Arrive early to secure a good spot, and don’t forget to bring blankets or beach chairs for comfort.

Main Beach, East Hampton Main Beach offers another fantastic vantage point

for viewing fireworks. Its pristine sands and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean create an idyllic setting for celebrating Independence Day with a fireworks display.

Sag Harbor or Shelter Island

If you prefer a waterfront view without the sandy beach, consider finding a spot along the waterfront in Sag Harbor or on Shelter Island. Both locations offer charming settings with harbor views, perfect for enjoying the fireworks from different perspectives.

Stars Over Montauk Sponsored by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, this explosive display happens on July 4th at Umbrella Beach starting at 9 p.m.

Montauk Fireworks Cruise

On the evening of the 4th, you can take a cruise aboard the Viking Classic for a buffet dinner and an amazing view of the firework festivities. Departs the dock at 8 p.m.

WHERE TO CELEBRATE

Baker House Happy Hour

The Baker House 1650 in East Hampton will be throwing an Aperitivo Hamptons Happy Hour on July 4th. The meetand-greet will run from 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature Baker House’s tasty new Sunset Cocktail menu.

The Surf Lodge Join for the concert series set of the season by St. Lucia (July 2), Alesso (July 3), and Diplo (July 4). Enjoy live performances while soaking up the sun in Montauk.

Stephen Talkhouse Talkhouse in Amagansett will host a performance by Ripe on Wednesday, July 3. The show is part of an exciting summer lineup, featuring a mix of local talent and renowned artists.

SUMMER

is calling

TV personality Lindsay Hubbard has been at the center of attention in the reality TV world this year. The Summer House star, who’s known for her bold personality and love of the East End, faced a public breakup just weeks before heading to the altar that had everyone talking. Now, she’s stronger than ever, and ready for the hottest Hamptons hot-girl summer yet!

Lindsay, you are coming off your eighth season of Summer House and a very public year personally for you. How are you feeling now that it’s over? Like a weight is lifted off my shoulders! This was obviously a tough season to watch and relive. It’s the last step in the entire process of my breakup [with fiancé Carl Radke]. I now get to close that chapter and put it away and never read that book again. Are you happy where things ended up at the conclusion of the reunion?

It was one of the first reunions in a while that I didn’t have anxiety. I wasn’t nervous going

into it. I just kept telling myself, “You just have to get through the day.” It was almost like as the hours went by, it was another hour closer to closing this chapter. I think because I had that mindset, it wasn’t as intense for me.

Was it the first time you had seen Carl since the breakup?

No. I had seen him at BravoCon, but this was the first time I addressed him face-to-face. How were you able to get through such a difficult time, knowing the world was watching along with you once the season aired? It was definitely difficult. I would have to stack the

episodes and watch them a few at a time to be able to give myself a breather. You’re opening yourself up to the judgments and opinions of the general public for better or worse, so it’s just to be expected. By the time the season aired, were you already over the breakup or were you still healing?

I was already over it. It didn’t take me too long, based on how he broke up with me. It was just a massive betrayal and lacked integrity and respect. It made it easier for me to shut my emotions off for that person. Because he did it the way that he did, I didn’t have any residual

Spotlight \ July 2024 \ 35

feelings for him. I was over it well before this season aired. How are you going to handle filming the next season of the show with him?

I’ll cross that bridge when we get there. We don’t know what’s going to happen. Carl, to me, is just another guy in the room. I feel indifferent about him being around me. It doesn’t make me feel any certain way. You’ve shared that you’re dating someone. Details, please!

He’s incredible. We actually dated a few years ago and it just wasn’t the right timing. He reached back out in December and we started dating in January. It’s been wonderful.

“I think people think I’m really hard, but I’m actually a soft, nurturing person.”

Does he watch the show?

He’s never watched it, and I don’t think he ever will. He doesn’t care about it, which is so refreshing to me. Whoever you’re with romantically in your life, do they have to like the Hamptons?

My boyfriend does like the Hamptons. But, no, they don’t have to like the Hamptons. However, it would be nice if they did.

What qualities are most important to you in a future partner?

I had a lot of boxes that I moved to the top of my priority list after my breakup. They need to be ambitious and driven, hopefully successful, but doesn’t have to be at the top yet. Someone who matches my lifestyle, and, of course, we should have chemistry.

Do you plan on continuing to be open with viewers about your dating life?

I’ve shared my entire life with viewers for the past eight seasons of the show, from my romantic life and all my

relationships to my personal family and childhood traumas to my career. I even talked about how I had a miscarriage at one point. I’ve shared my entire journey up until this point with everyone. I’m an open book, and

I will always continue to share every aspect of myself with everyone.

How did you originally land on Summer House?

The creators stumbled across my and Kyle [Cooke]’s group of

friends. We would go out in the heyday of New York. We went out in packs of people. They started interviewing everyone in our group and that was it. We’d been living this lifestyle well before the show existed. It’s the culture of New York in the summertime—to be in the city during the week and then go to the Hamptons on the weekends and party. I’ve been going to the Hamptons since I interned in the summer of 2007. I was a VIP hostess at a club called Star Room in the Hamptons. Any tips for staying in a shared house?

Clean up after yourself! No one wants to be the one cleaning up everyone’s dirty dishes the whole time. Don’t get wasted and annoy your roommates. Just have fun and figure it out for yourself!

Some people feel that Summer House isn’t an actual reflection of Hamptons life. What do you say to them? The Hamptons is different for everyone. If you have a family, it’s obviously going to look a little different than people who share a house. If you’re in Montauk, that level of partying is probably even way more aggressive than what we do. What was life like for you before garnering fame on reality TV?

I’m from Florida, originally. I grew up in a small boating and fishing town about 20 minutes north of Jupiter, and I went to the University of Florida—go, Gators! Three days after I graduated, I sold everything and moved to New York with two suitcases and a couple of interviews lined up. I got a job right away

at one of the PR firms I was interviewing with, which was honestly a miracle because it was 2008 and we just had this massive financial crisis in the United States and nobody was hiring. I was in New York for a year and then moved to L.A. and landed a job at a different PR firm. I was there for three and a half years opening every restaurant, lounge, bar, club, and hotel. My boss at the time needed me to come back to New York, so I moved back in 2012 and by 2014, I wound up leaving and opening my own PR firm. Then, Summer House started filming in 2016. After COVID, things didn’t go back to where they were, hospitality-wise, so I just leaned into being Lindsay from Summer House. That’s where I’m at now.

A lot of people dream of being famous when they go on a reality show. Did you ever have those aspirations? No. I thought to myself, “I’m just going to go be a kick-ass publicist.” It was by chance that I wound up on a reality TV show. I also have that personality, which is a good formula for sharing. To all these people who want to be famous, as long as you have thick skin and you’re mentally and emotionally tough, then you should be fine. Many don’t realize that there are a

lot of people in this world with a lot of opinions, and they’re not afraid to share them.

Do you ever regret being on reality TV? No. I don’t believe in having regrets. I think the best thing about being on reality TV is using my stories and my journey to inspire other people and make them feel less alone about whatever’s going on in their lives.

Who else in the Bravo community are you close to?

I’m close with Katie [Maloney] and Ariana [Madix] from Vanderpump Rules. I’m close with Whitney [Rose] from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Leva [Bonaparte] and Olivia [Flowers] from Southern Charm. There are some old New York Housewives that I’m friendly with. It’s kind of all over the place, but obviously with BravoCon, it’s like a big reunion. I’m close with mostly the girls, not a lot of the guys.

What do you hope fans learned about you this season?

This season, I didn’t react the way that people wanted me to, and I didn’t get activated. I was always calm and handled everything with grace. I think it was a true showing of growth on my part.

How do you think you were able to do that?

A lot of therapy for a lot of years. Who did you get the closest to this season on the show?

I got even closer with Gabby [Prescod]. She’s one of my best friends at this point. What does your typical Fourth of July weekend look like? Typically, I’m out in the Hamptons. So that’s been the past 12 years of my life. I usually chill, and go out to dinner or to a bar. Hopefully, have a couple of barbecues and maybe bounce around to other people’s houses!

What’s giving you fireworks these days?

Every time my house in Nashville is rented, I get fireworks. Speaking of which, how is Hubb House going? For our readers, you can rent Lindsay’s house in Nashville. Just FYI!

It’s going well. I closed on the house at the end of December, then we designed it by February and started renting it out in March. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough that every single week, it’s rented. A couple of times a week, I will check my owner’s portal to see when there are openings and to see if I can even stay at my own house. Before you go, what would you say is the biggest misconception about you?

I think people think I’m really hard, but I’m actually a soft, nurturing person. I’m strong, but that’s because I’ve had to be my entire life. At the end of the day, I cultivate a lot of love and generosity around me. T

Fern

Mallis, Creator of New York Fashion Week and Host of “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis”

Fern, we’re excited to have you and Nicole Miller on our Spotlight panel on July 14 [see box on page 36]. What’s it like to know that so many people look up to you for advice and perspective on the fashion industry and beyond?

It’s a little awesome and a little stressful. It’s a heavy responsibility when everyone thinks I have the answers for their lives and careers. I try to do the best I can.

For those who might not know, how did you create New York Fashion Week? It happened when I joined the CFDA as executive director in 1991. This was when fashion shows were being held all over the place in New York. Michael Kors did a show in an empty loft space in Chelsea that was dense and tight. When he put

We love seeing you out and about. How do you stay so energetic?

I’m not sure I am. I need to figure that out. I’m going to probably start to need some Vitamin B shots or something to keep going. I like supporting my friends and the people I like when they’re doing big things. I don’t go to everything, even though it looks like I do. As someone who has advised so many designers, have you ever thought about launching your own brand?

the bass music on, the ceiling started to crumble over the iconic ’90s supermodels—Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford—and they kept walking. However, chunks of plaster landed on two of the most important editors at the time and they both wrote articles the next day basically saying, “We live for fashion, we don’t want to die for it.” I said, “I think that my job description just changed.” It seemed like the opportune time to figure out how to find safe, sound spaces to organize, modernize, and centralize shows for the American designers. During that time, NYFW was as glamorous as ever. Do you think it will ever be what it once was?

Once the genie is out of the bottle, you can’t put it back in. But I think there’s a marvelous opportunity for someone who has a vision and some money. If they find a good venue to produce multiple shows, I think there’s still a need for that.

For several years, I had a brand called Fern Finds. It was first done on QVC, then on HSN. It started with jewelry from all my trips to India, because I worked on Fashion Week in Mumbai for 10 years. I was always buying a ton of jewelry there. I was stopped by people saying, “Where did you get that?” We stopped doing it, but I keep getting asked about it. It might be time to resurrect some of the Fern Finds products and ideas. What advice would you give to someone looking to get their start in the fashion industry?

Stay focused. Work for somebody as much as possible. If you want to be a designer, work for a company, and become a sponge and take it all in. Make sure you have a good lawyer, good financing and money in the bank. It’s not inexpensive to launch a brand. Rally all your friends and family and all the goodwill you can get in the industry to break through the madness. The main advice I’ve always given is to be nice. Nobody wants to work with a diva or someone who thinks they’re privileged in any way.

And your advice to someone looking to rebrand later in life?

Just find that niche. You have to identify who the customer is. The truth is, none of us need any new clothing, so you have to be creating something that people are going to say, “Oh, God, I have to have that.”

We have to talk about your conversation series at the 92nd Street Y. Who have been some of your favorite interviewees thus far?

The one favorite of all time was Bill Cunningham, the much-loved photographer and journalist from The New York Times. And that was because he was always a private person and didn’t like talking to people, he just wanted to take pictures. One of the others that I loved doing was Leonard Lauder. He is just a remarkable man, businessman, and leader and supporter of women through his entire career. But I love them all—Calvin [Klein], Donna [Karan], Tommy [Hilfiger], Marc Jacobs; Michael Kors was a hoot, Isaac [Mizrahi] was hysterical, and Valentino was remarkably charming and wonderful. And Iris Apfel! Who is on your interviewee’s bucket list?

It’s never completed. Of all the people in the industry, Ralph Lauren, who did a beautiful forward for my first book when it came out but has always skirted around the issue of sitting with me on the stage, and now I think we’ve passed the moment where he would do that. Carolina Herrera is also somebody that I’ve always begged to do it, and she’s always like, “Fern, I love you, but it’s too personal.” I want to reach out to RuPaul. I’m also just about ready to start book three of my interviews. It’s no secret you love the Hamptons. Any special reason? For the same reason it’s special to millions of people. I have a house that I love on a beautiful lake in Southampton, and it’s where I feel like my battery gets recharged. It’s unlike anywhere else; it’s gotten a little bit too crazy and too expensive, but once you bear up to the LIE and you get out there, you’re in paradise. What’s next for you?

I’m working on a restaurant. We’re in the funding stage right now. It will hopefully be on the Upper East Side, and it would be a fashion equivalent of Elaine’s, which was a place on East 81st and Second Avenue, and it was well known in the literary world. I want this place to be somewhere people in the fashion industry feel comfortable and will love the décor and food.

Nicole, you’ve been in the fashion industry for more than 40 years. How does that feel?

Reflecting on my 40-plus years in the fashion industry, I feel a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment. I had the privilege of witnessing this industry transform in remarkable ways and am excited to see what the future holds. There are always new things to learn and create.

What do you think has been at the core of how you’ve been able to remain a staple in this business for all these years?

Fashion has always been more than just a career for me; it’s a true calling. I’ve always stayed authentic to my aesthetic but never shied away from exploring new trends and ideas. I think the balance between reliability and innovation has kept the brand relevant and exciting.

wherever they are. Its unique model allows me to connect with customers and share my authentic stories, as well as the inspiration behind each item. Have you thought about a Hamptons-inspired range?

One of my deliveries of the QVC line actually includes a floral print inspired by summers in Sag Harbor. However, I have considered creating a dedicated Hamptons-inspired line. The collection would transition from beach to dinner, capturing the Hamptons lifestyle.

Dennis Basso is another QVC star. Did he give you any advice going into this?

Dennis is a dear friend. He told me to stay authentic to who I am as a designer because the audience really responds to that. You also have your own line of rosé wine. How did this come about?

I am half French and have many French friends. One of them happens to be a wine distributor and the idea for rosé came up in a conversation at dinner one night. Voilà! Rosé!

that overlooks its private beach. Sunset Beach Hotel also has a fabulous restaurant with panoramic views.

Who’s in your Hamptons crew out here?

I have a bunch of close friends Out East—Candace Bushnell, Luann de Lesseps, Ivana Lowell, Sara Colleton, Anne Hearst, Debbie Bancroft, and Sandra Ripert, just to name a few. Proudest career moment?

My first fashion show was a huge highlight in my career, and things took off after that. I was lucky to have all the top supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Kate Moss. And also when I launched men’s ties in 1988. There was a tremendous response with everyone from celebrities to bankers wearing my ties. I’m excited to bring back my men’s line and reconnect with old and new consumers.

You have recently teamed up with QVC on an affordable clothing line. What sparked this partnership?

The nicole by Nicole Miller collection brings forth a fusion of my signature aesthetic and QVC’s commitment to offering size-inclusive fashion choices.

We know you love summering in the Hamptons. Why is this the perfect backdrop for creatives like yourself?

Because it’s the perfect mix of relaxation and inspiration. It’s a great place for me to recharge either by spending time with family and friends or connecting with nature. The Hamptons has the most stunning beaches and gorgeous sunsets. I also love visiting the many art galleries Out East.

What are some of your favorite things to do Out East?

I love eating out at some of my favorite spots! Such as, Jack’s, which has become my go-to spot for not just coffee, but for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and commitment to quality. Le Bilboquet, which is a dining experience that combines French elegance with the laidback charm of the Hamptons. On Shelter Island, the Pridwin Hotel offers a charming blend of historic elegance and modern comfort. It also has an amazing spa and restaurant

my friends. I initially resisted going into photography as a job. I tried a lot of other things and after graduating from college was working in another industry when friends of mine needed photography for their fashion line and asked me to do it. I did it for fun, then the images were credited in press features and I started booking other jobs. What have been some of the latest projects you’ve worked on that you’re excited about?

Sophie, how did you get into photography?

I grew up with by it, both in the home surrounded by cameras and with my dad [Arthur Elgort] constantly taking photos, as well as going on his shoots and travel jobs since I was a kid. I always took photos as a hobby; I would bring cameras to camp and school and take pictures of

How did you two first link up?

Rocco: We met a few years ago when we were put in touch to work on a project together. This summer, we’re finally linking up and working together!

Kyky, why did you decide to launch your own restaurant in the Hamptons?

Kyky: Southampton has a

I am hosting and executiveproducing a new series for PBS All Arts. We started filming this spring and it will air later in 2024. It’s been a fun project and I’m excited to share it. What are some of the top lessons your father, Arthur Elgort, taught you?

Take one good photo every day and at the end of 10 days you’ll have 10 good photos. Have your camera ready, don’t miss the moment. Follow your passion and it won’t feel like work. What are some of the Elgort family Hamptons traditions?

limited number of restaurants and I wanted to fill the void. There was a need to bring in something new. Additionally, over the years I’ve been asked to come back to the Hamptons to open something, so this year I finally did.

It’s no secret it’s hard to open a restaurant here. What’s your experience been like?

Kyky: So far it has been a positive experience; the local community seems supportive and excited for us to come in and take over the space.

Spending time with family, friends dropping by, dinner parties at home, being out on the water, jumping on the trampoline, playing music. A lot revolves around their house.

How do you stay inspired in your craft?

I love to keep learning and new things, techniques, mediums. What are you looking forward to this summer?

Switching up our routine, spending more time outdoors, shooting outdoors, and creating more good images.

Rocco, what kind of food can guests expect?

Rocco: Italian seafood-forward bill of fare with a modern approach informed by my Italian background with dishes like jumbo fluke crudo, fritto misto, and lobster and scallop torta, plus an extensive raw bar. And the dining experience?

Kyky: Guests will experience a sophisticated but comfortable environment, both at the restaurant and in the lounge. The restaurant will be kidfriendly, have a friendly waitstaff, and be perfect for any occasion. The lounge will hold an older, sophisticated clientele. Anything else our readers should know?

Kyky: There will be a lot of exciting things happening at Il Pellicano at Bijoux this summer. Guests can enjoy the lawn with fun games and day cabanas for drinks with friends. And there will be special menus for holidays, an exciting brunch menu, and handcrafted cocktails with top-shelf spirits.

Before starting your lifestyle blog, Stroller in the City, you owned a showroom in NYC. Yes! It was called Seamless Showroom. I was pregnant with my firstborn and panicked that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the travel that a sales life demands. I wanted to be a stayat-home mom. With that, I sold the showroom a month after my son, Ryder, was born so I could focus on him. I started Stroller in the City in 2009 as a creative outlet for myself and family members, tracking my quest to find clothing and fun things I was discovering as a new mom. How has the blogging business changed?

The biggest shift in the business since I started in the industry is the ever-changing social media aspect. One day you’re posting beautiful photos, then it segues into one-minute videos and reels. It’s about learning new things and adapting, while staying true to yourself. We know you love your fast-paced life in NYC, but you spend a lot of time in the Hamptons. What inspires you to be on the East End?

I’ve been summering in the Hamptons since I was 17. I fell in love with it back then. I met my husband here, got engaged on Sag Main Beach, and my daughter Siella’s middle name is Harbor, after Sag Harbor. It’s a special place for our family.

You’re a born and bred New Yorker. Did your upbringing spark your interest in art? It absolutely sparked my interest in art. My mother is a photographer, and both my grandparents are artists and creatives in their own ways. So I was surrounded by inspiring people living authentic expressions of their creativity. What artists did you admire most growing up?

So many, but the impressionists first and foremost. Monet especially, he’s what made me fall in love with art. I’ve come to embrace that I’m truly a romantic at heart. Tell us about your art and the message you wish to send. My art is just my love letter to the Earth and Mother Nature. I create my work primarily outside. It has always been part of my process to be tapped into the energy of the elements. And I’ve been working with natural materials—sand, stones, shells, driftwood. I want to help people remember…who we are, what we are, where we come from and what we will go back to…and the importance of that. What keeps you motivated and inspired to keep pursuing your work?

Creating is something I feel I have to do, it’s a part of who I am and how I relate to and process life and the world around me. So even if I’m not always feeling 100 percent motivated, I can always find inspiration and purpose in the physical action.

and we want our clients to feel transported to another place. What new brands can customers shop?

The shop will showcase pieces from Love Binetti readyto-wear, fine lingerie, and evening collection by Chiffique, accessories by Dragon Diffusion, Bonastre Paris, Carrie Forbes, Sophique Milano, Linda Farrow, Emilio Pucci, and Phtobya Italy. How did your partnership with Missoni Home happen?

Diego, tell us about your new Sag Harbor location!

We have been a pop-in in Sag Harbor for the past three years, and we have finally planted our roots in Sag Harbor Village. The new shop location is incredible, and the building is the perfect setting where we can curate brands that we love. The space is at 17 Washington Street. What kind of experience will customers get at the store?

The boutique is designed to have a shop-in-shop experience with a selection of national and international brands. We chose a diversity of designers that complement one another,

Ezra, tell us about your East Hampton pop-up!

I’ve dreamed about bringing a summer outpost for Wayan

We met with the Missoni Home team at their showroom and began to brainstorm. We’ve created an outdoor cabana with a secret garden where our clients can come to listen to music and relax with a drink. We’ll also showcase a selection of Missoni Home tableware, beach robes, and towels with an assortment of pillows, indoor poufs, throws, and outdoor furniture.

x Ma•dé to the Hamptons, so we were grateful to do it this summer! Dishes are similar to our Balinese French-inspired ones in the city, but with an extra vacation-worthy twist and special cocktails and juices. Fave dish on the menu?

Scallop crudo, mango salad, soy tamarind glazed BBQ ribs, and lobster noodles.

What sparked your interest in the hospitality industry?

Food has been one of my biggest passions growing up and also, I’ve always wanted to share my love and joys for Balinese food and culture in NYC.

You’re hosting a dinner party. Who’s on the must-invite list?

My best friends and my partners/head chef Ochi and Cedric Vongerichten because I would be serving my favorite dishes from our restaurants Wayan and Ma•dé.

Jocelyn, what’s the backstory behind launching your brand?

Working for a small accessory company and taking on all the responsibilities of design, sales, and PR gave me the knowledge and the confidence to go out on my own. The business tripled its revenue within the three years I was there by expanding the breath of the collection and selling to more stores. Many people know you for your faux furs, but now you’re a year-round brand. How are you achieving being known during the warmer months, too?

Word of mouth and going all in on social media. Working closely with my favorite influencers who inspire me, and photographing my family and friends to showcase the new items in an authentic way that feels natural to the brand. Tell us about your summer collection.

It’s inspired by my home in Sag Harbor and living the life Out East. I love creating versatile pieces taking you to the pool, the beach, the boat, and then off to dinner. My collection consists of white eyelets and beautiful colorful cotton stripes that are lightweight and fun. How would you describe the Jocelyn girl?

Fun, free, confident lover of fashion and everything cool and colorful, new, and dreamy. Where can we find Jocelyn in the Hamptons?

We’re planning a new pop-up shop for later this summer. Location TBD. The entire collection is available online at shopjocelyn.com.

You worked as a fashion assistant before delving into music. What prompted your career change?

I was always into fashion and style, but it wasn’t enough for me. I didn’t know who I wanted to be in that world or where I would necessarily be going with it. The idea of bringing music into the fashion world felt like I had found my place. The DJ industry has grown rapidly over the past few years. How have you seen the industry change over time?

It’s a competitive world. Technology changes, the times change, and we evolve with them. I like to not limit myself as a DJ and find ways to keep it “hot.” Broadening my music taste, taking notes from parties I’m inspired by, exploring new venue opportunities, not being afraid of technology.

What’s your favorite part about your work?

Imagine being able to set the vibe of an important room by playing your favorite music at some of the best parties around the world! I think getting playful and creative with it is my favorite part. Planning, but not planning; it’s like cooking. When you stop focusing so much and stop following exact ingredients/directions, and put your own “touch” or spin” on it, that’s when the magic happens. That’s when I love my mixes and the party feels it!

What has been your best memory as a DJ Out East?

Being known as the go-to “Hamptons girl” each summer once the season comes around has been something I don’t take for granted. Being booked here all summer puts me in a category of its own. [I love performing at] Topping Rose and many stores in East Hampton and Amagansett. I also get the opportunity to DJ at some incredibly gorgeous homes/properties.

You became a mom in 2021. How has motherhood affected your career?

In every way! I always thought I was a multihyphenate before, but now I really gained the title. Being a mother means no off days, no off times, and always being “on duty.” As a mom who prioritizes her career but is also hands on, I try to incorporate my daughter, Miller, into my world as much as possible. How do you plan on expanding your craft? I love a lot of things that I haven’t yet “touched.” Besides playing my music at iconic parties, I am endlessly thinking of ways to create and expand myself. Whether it’s capsules with brands, design, even getting more comfortable talking to the camera. It usually comes down to continuing “Pamela Tick” as a brand, not just a DJ or a model.

You started your platform while social media was just taking off. How has Instagram changed things for you?

Since I started my blog in the early days of social media, it’s been fascinating to see it evolve over the past 13-plus years. What I find particularly special is that [Instagram] shines a spotlight on small businesses, giving them immense opportunity and exposure. It’s an incredible tool for driving sales and bringing awareness to a brand. Speaking of brands, now you’re starting your own clothing line!

Yes! It’s called Everyone Loves the Weekend. Our first collection is perfect for summer and was inspired by my favorite destinations around the world. You’ll find special pieces like our custom floral-print Nantucket dress and our white 100 percent linen Capri dress. You can shop our collection online at everyonelovestheweekend.com. Why did you decide to activate in the Hamptons as your first stop for the brand?

We’re so excited to be hosting a trunk show at Lucy Cuneo’s Shop (formerly The Dunmore Beach Club). Lucy photographed our wedding in Nantucket three years ago, and I’ve loved following her creative journey since then. I knew her store would be the ideal place to host our first trunk show.

THE GODFATHER OF DERMATOLOGY

Dr. Neil Sadick has been at the forefront of dermatology for more than four decades. The MD catches up with Spotlight on what’s buzzin’ in beauty. Plus, you can visit Dr. Sadick at his Hamptons location (315 Meetinghouse Lane in Southampton) on weekends for aesthetic treatments for hair, face, and body. BY SYDNEY SADICK

Dad, what’s new on the aesthetics’ front this summer?

Summer’s the perfect time to get glowing. Combat that seasonal shedding with the innovative FoLix laser for hair rejuvenation or Keravive’s nourishing scalp treatments. And because we’re baring more skin, we’re loving Secret RF, a total gamechanger for nonsurgical skin tightening on any skin tone, no downtime required. What’s the most popular treatment at the moment?

One of the hottest trends I’m seeing is proactively preserving your hair’s future with stem cell banking. Companies like Acorn are pioneers in this cutting-edge field. They extract a small sample of your hair follicles and cryogenically store them. So if hair loss ever becomes an issue down the road, you’ll have access to your own banked cells, which can be deployed to regrow your fuller, younger-looking locks. What should our readers keep in mind when trying to find the best skincare brands?

What are your thoughts on the drama surrounding the vampire facelift?

This technique has certainly stirred up a lot of controversy and sensationalism in the media. At its core, the “vampire facelift” is just a rebranded way of describing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy combined with dermal fillers. It can be an effective regenerative treatment, but calling it a “vampire facelift” is clearly just playing into fad appeal. The real efficacy comes down to the injector’s technique with PRP and fillers. We can’t help but notice your own great skin. What’s your secret?

treating medical conditions. But I saw potential in harnessing their power for cosmetic rejuvenation. My team and I helped kick-start what is now a booming market for noninvasive aesthetic treatments. Seeing the evolution and adoption of these game-changing technologies has been rewarding. The aesthetic world was forever changed. Being part of that is what I’m most proud of in my career. T

Look for brands backed by clinical studies on effective natural ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, and antioxidants. Prioritize clean nontoxic formulas from reputable brands. What’s the most overrated skincare product?

At-home devices promising professional-level results. Sure,

they make big claims, but the truth is they simply can’t match the potency and precision of inoffice treatments performed by skilled providers. And speaking of costs, don’t assume that the most expensive skincare automatically equals the best. Sometimes it’s just fancy packaging and marketing hype. Focus on scientifically backed ingredients and formulations, not inflated price tags. Is a foundation that includes SPF enough during summer? No. Most foundations only contain SPF 15–30, which is insufficient for adequate daily sun exposure. We recommend using a separate sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapplying every two hours when outdoors.

I’m so flattered you noticed! My secret is a multipronged approach using some of the latest med-spa treatments and medical-grade skincare. I’m a huge fan of laser toning with Laser Genesis. At home, I use a prescription retinoid at night along with a topical with anti-inflammatory properties to keep my complexion calm and radiant. And I have to give credit to biostimulatory fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra for their regenerative collagenboosting effects.

Proudest career moment?

A TOAST TO CLAUDIA AND JACKIE!

The dynamic sister duo Claudia Oshry and Jackie Oshry have spent the past six years growing their charttopping millennial podcast, “The Toast.” Now, they’re bringing their witty banter and up-to-the-minute pop culture discussions to the Hamptons with their live residency, Girly Swirlies Night Out! In this exclusive interview with Spotlight, the sisters share all about this intimate and immersive experience and what they’re looking forward to most about spending their summer Out East. BY

Like many, we’re big fans of your show “The Toast.” But for those meeting you both for the first time, tell us about the podcast.

Claudia Oshry: We started in 2017 with a daily live show for the millennial audience to talk about pop culture from two hilarious sisters. From there, it evolved into “The Toast,” our daily millennial morning show podcast that covers various topics, including entertainment, news, and our personal lives. Congratulations on selling out Girly Swirlies Night Out in New York City in one hour and breaking the record for the fastest sell-out of three shows in the 25-year history of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. What can those who were able to get their hands on tickets expect?

Claudia: The show will celebrate “The Toast” with fun games and exciting new segments, similar to what we cover on our Patreon and our podcast. It will be pop culture–heavy, but most importantly, it will be focused on fun. We want it to feel like a true girls’ night out. Simply put—a good girlie time.

Jackie Oshry: The goal for the show is for our audience to have a great night. Our listeners are working women and moms, so we want to give them an amazing night. They deserve it. What does having a live show in the Hamptons mean to you both as born and bred New Yorkers?

Claudia: We are Long Island girlies, so having our live show in the Hamptons feels like a homecoming.

The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center attracts great people, so we’re excited to bring “The Toast” there. It will be super fun and not serious— nothing we do is that serious!

Having the show in New York City at the Beacon Theatre for four nights feels extra special, too, because I live in the city and Jackie used to. We didn’t necessarily plan to have the show in both places, but it just feels right.

How will you prepare for live shows in the Hamptons? Are there any favorite local shopping destinations you will be hitting?

Claudia: We have been thinking about our looks. We are both worried about what we’ll wear, so we may be hitting Main Street.

Jackie: Yes, our outfits are important to us.

The vibe of New York City and the Hamptons is different, so our looks for city shows will be different than the Hamptons ones. We want to look appropriate for both places.

What are you looking forward to the most about summering Out East?

Claudia: I’m on this wellness journey, so I’m looking forward to eating so much fruit. Fruit in the Hamptons is the best, especially from the little roadside farmstands. I also love Round Swamp Farm and its selections of precut fruit.

Jackie: This July 4th, I’m looking forward to wholesome family time, eating a hot dog, and hopefully having great weather—you know, some good all-American fun.

What advice do you have for creatives looking to get started or advance their careers?

Claudia: Just do it. A lot of people talk about what they want to do, but all the time you’ve spent talking about it, you could’ve just been doing it. Don’t be worried about what others think of you and your ideas—just get started!

Jackie: Remember, how you start will not be how it winds up. You have to start and learn as you go. So put yourself out there and drown out the outside noise. Be unashamed and confident—even if you don’t feel that way. Simply put: Fake it till you make it.

What’s next for “The Toast”?

Claudia and Jackie: We’re big fans of blooming where we’re planted, so what’s next for “The Toast”? Hopefully, a lot more of the same! T

You started your career as a freelance fashion stylist. How did your background in styling prompt you to become the owner of Wyld Blue? Starting Wyld Blue was never the big plan. We were looking for a space for Surf Lodge Wellness at the time, and there happened to be an empty store available next to it. My husband, Oliver, literally nudged me when the agent asked if we knew anyone interested, and he said, “Just take it. I know you could make something so cool in there.” And three months later, we opened the doors. We knew nothing about retail, but after 15 years of styling, I had the confidence to curate a space with brands I had worked with, and I knew how to source and create a moment. When did your love for fashion begin?

our relationship, we connected the dots that we had met years before at a Halloween party. This was more than 18 years ago, and now we’re celebrating 10 years of marriage. Are you and your family living Out East full-time? Yes, this is home for us now. The kids are at the Montauk school, and we have fallen so in love with life here.

Date night with my husband, Oli

My dad ran a men’s retail chain in Australia. I always wished it was women’s clothes, but I have such vivid memories of running through the warehouse and being enthralled with the process of seeing fabrics turned into clothes and then displayed in stores. I never expected to open my own stores and eventually create my own brand, but maybe that early exposure set in without me realizing it! What experience does your store Wyld Blue offer its customers?

We love to create our spaces into something that takes your breath away on entry. It’s not just about the unique clothing selection, it’s the curation of everything in the store, from the soft color pallets, the cheeky signs above the racks, the whimsical tree instillations, and the naughty designer pill bottles. We try to offer items at all prices, so everyone who enters can leave with something. How did you and your husband, Oli, meet?

We met through common friends in Australia, and started dating almost right away. But about a year into

You moved from Australia to NYC when you were 24. Does the Hamptons remind you of where you grew up?

It’s more similar to Oliver’s hometown, which is a holiday destination surf town. But the Hamptons is its own unique world. We love the seasonality of it, the busy summers where the town comes to life, the beaches are full and the restaurants open, but we also love the offseason when we get to spend quality time with family. What’s your favorite Hamptons hidden gem?

Even though Ditch Plains Beach is not a secret, spending the mornings there with a coffee when it’s overcast is one of my favorite things to do. It’s full of locals, kids, and dogs, and it’s such a beautiful way to start the day. T

SPOTLIGHT ON FREDERICO AZEVEDO CEO, FOUNDER, AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER OF UNLIMITED EARTH CARE

Dreaming up your Hamptons garden and beyond? Then you need visionary Frederico Azevedo to put his magic touch on your home. Here’s how he’s become the go-to landscape talent on the East End. BY

Frederico, what’s the backstory on how you started Unlimited Earth Care?

I founded my firm in 1993. When I first came to the Hamptons, and I saw the ocean, the farms, the fields, and the bay, I was taken aback by how beautiful and diverse the environments were. I knew it was the right place for me, and I’ve been designing from our headquarters in Bridgehampton for more than 30 years now. I realized my ideas about garden and landscape design centered around sustainable practices. Tell us about the most popular services that you offer. Clients love my signature curving floral borders, which are a little different each time because I tailor every design to the specific conditions of the property and the desires of my clients. You expanded your storefront last summer. What additions can customers expect?

Yes, the Garden Market opened in the summer of 2023 next door to our Bridgehampton headquarters at 2249 Scuttle Hole Road. The Garden Market offers the elements of an Unlimited Earth Care design—a curated selection of native and well-adapted plants, flowers, shrubs, herbs, and vegetables. How do you work with clients to realize their dreams?

I always visit the site and carefully consider the aesthetic of any existing structures. It’s all about getting to know my clients and understanding what their ideal landscape would be. Some people with traditional houses prefer a more neat, modern look for their gardens. Or I love to design a full-color

more people to experience the aesthetic and approaches that I’ve formed over the past 30 years. In terms of design, I’ve always kept to my principles of color and sustainability, and advances in technology and materials help me to better achieve that.

Because this is our Creatives issue, what inspires you? I’m inspired by nature, and I love to go on bike rides with my French bulldog, Louis, and to experience the wild beauty of the beaches and trails of the Hamptons. I also love art, and find great creative inspiration in the paintings, photography, and sculptures of my favorite artists. I actually find great inspiration for my work in animation because unlike a painting, animation expresses color in motion, like a garden. What’s your favorite type of flower and plant right now?

Hamptons garden—with my own fresh approach, of course. How has your business evolved over the past three decades?

We have expanded a great deal, first to the Garden Concept Store and now to the Garden Market. It’s so exciting to invite

I love alliums; they’re so graphic and vibrant. In addition to being naturally deer and rabbit resistant, they’re versatile in a design. They can act as a subtle, modern pop of color in a mostly green composition or push the drama of a colorful flower bed. How do you make use of color in your designs?

Color is everything to my work, and I compose different color palettes to set the different moods of my designs. My sense of color is grounded by the

elemental—purple complements yellow, blue complements orange—but I’ve always found a way to push those effects further by building complex arrangements of color that shift in harmony with variations in dimension and texture. I like to design gardens where the color draws you in; it’s an elevated sense of natural beauty. What has been your proudest career moment so far?

I’m proud to have earned the Out East End Impact Award, which was given by New York State assembly member Rebecca Seawright. Anything else our readers should know?

My book, Bloom: the Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo, is sold out online, but it’s still available for purchase at the Garden Market. It makes a wonderful host gift because it features hundreds of photos of Hamptons gardens, and it’s a meditation on my approach to sustainable design. T

LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN

Everything you need to know before booking your summer aesthetics appointment at Permanent Touch Cosmetics!

As a beauty, consultant, practitioner, and clinical application specialist, KOL and luminary for global laser companies for well over three decades, I have watched this incredible industry evolve in so many ways.

At Permanent Touch Cosmetics, everyone is treated as an individual with specific needs, concerns, and goals, and it’s super important to understand and translate their expectations, as well as being

cognizant that in aesthetics, we’re working on people’s selfesteem as well as their skin. It can be difficult as we age to look in the mirror and see a different version of what we are used to. This is why we feel it’s so important to choose a practice that is only using state-ofthe-art technology, constantly educating our team, and staying on top of the latest trends and topics, as well as being prepared to debunk all the “social media trends” that can be misleading

and in many cases feed into an unrealistic expectation.

Working in-house with plastic surgeons, as well as boardcertified dermatologists, we believe there’s truly a marriage between having the best possible skin and approach to healthy skin in conjunction with potentially the more aggressive and invasive options when in fact they’re needed.

I think with the incredible advancements and widespread options of anti-aging aesthetic technology and devices, it’s important to bring attention to “doing it right.” Education to the consumer is key, and that starts with education to the provider, whether it be the practice owner or the clinician (in most cases, both) in order to give a clear understanding of the abilities and limitations of many modalities.

It’s beyond important to position a treatment plan and options in a realistic manner, and this all starts with the consultation. In our practice, safety is always first, and then, of course, results! It’s imperative that we have a full understanding of the clients desires, goals, and commitment to the treatments that they’re signing up for, as well as setting realistic expectations—and none of these can be achieved without an in-depth consultation.

Not only is this something that we provide, but we’re offering assistance and are in the process of creating a training program that will give me the opportunity to share the wisdom that I have acquired in this incredible industry over the past 30 years.

We’ve been working with Sciton technology for more than 20 years, and are proud to be the first practice in our

demographic to offer the most cutting-edge technology: BBL HEROic, as well as Forever Young BBL HERO, MOXI lunchtime laser peel, SkinTyte, and more, as well as Lutronics Accufit body sculpting. All treatments are noninvasive, non-ablative, and completely safe in the hands of an experienced provider like our team at Permanent Touch Cosmetics. T

Permanent Touch Cosmetics is located in the dermatology center in the offices of celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg at 160 Crossways Park Drive, Woodbury, NY. For more info, visit permanenttouchcosmetics. com or call 917-734-7378.

RED-HOT PODCASTS FOR THE SUMMER SEASON

The July 4th holiday is synonymous with fun in the sun. It’s the holiday when most of us can take a few days off from work and enjoy some downtime. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on your favorite podcasts or check out some new ones. Here, we share some shows that the Spotlight team is currently enjoying and even a few from our favorite Hamptonites.

OUR LOVE SPHERE Mother-and-daughter matchmakers Janis and Carly Spindel have more than 5,000 marriages to their credit. So they seem to know the ingredients for a love match, and on their “Our Love Sphere” podcast they share their skills with listeners. Their innovative approach is to work exclusively with male clients to find them the woman of their dreams. Therefore, they’re always scouting for amazing women to match with their hopeful guys. The duo has invaluable advice from their years of experience. Recent episodes, including “Embracing Online Dating” and “Men’s Dating Mistakes,” offer great relationship pointers.

Emily Tisch Sussman is an award-winning producer and former political strategist who made her own pivot after leaving her job at the largest Democratic think tank in Washington, D.C. How timely to have a podcast that focuses on women who gained their ultimate success through making a life change. The show is all about women who have made bold moves and inspired others to do the same. Recent episodes have included interviews with Julia Haart, Fran Drescher, and Christy Turlington Burns—all of whom made fascinating, major career pivots. Maybe Tisch Sussman will inspire your next brave step!

ALL THE BUZZ WITH SYDNEY SADICK

As a lover of podcasts (and we are somewhat partial to Spotlight founder Sydney Sadick), All the Buzz is truly a great new podcast. Between the accomplished entrepreneurs, celebrities, and influencers who are guests—and Sadick’s spunky and inquisitive approach, mixed in with her personal anecdotes—we’re entertained and informed. Recent guests have included Spotlight Memorial Day cover star Dylan Lauren, who we have rarely heard interviewed so we learned so much; and Margaret Josephs of The Real Housewives of New Jersey fame giving her hot takes on the latest drama from the Bravo franchise. We can’t wait to see who is up next on the buzzy roster!

THE

BRIGHT SIDE

Journalist and TV host Danielle Robay and award-winning journalist Simone Boyce keep us informed of the latest topics, including trends, wellness, books, and culture. They aim to inspire us daily by having real conversations with women navigating through life’s transitions. The goal of each episode is to educate, inspire, and empower female listeners. Recent shows have included topics such as “Staying Fast and Fabulous with Queen Harrison Claye,” “Building the Life and Career of Your Dreams with Kathleen Griffith,” and “Menopause and Aging Well with Dr. Jennifer Ashton.” Give a listen, and take a turn to the bright side of life.

MORNING BREW DAILY

From Wall Street to Silicon Valley, journalists Neal Freyman and Toby Howell focus on the latest business and economic news. Initially starting as a newsletter, “Morning Brew Daily” has now entered the podcast world in an effort to keep us informed daily. The hosts are upbeat and energetic, and their fresh take on a talk show is addictive. Topics have included “Is the Red Hot Economy Cooling Down?” “Facebook’s Plan to Win Over Gen Z,” and “Big Retail is Finally Slashing Prices.” We’re obsessed with their timely subject matter, and this Morning Brew allows us to learn and gives us an edge in the business world.

ON BRAND

Veteran advertising, marketing, and branding executive Donny Deutsch took over his father’s company as chairman in 1989 and turned it into a multibillion-dollar ad agency. He evolved into a well-known TV personality with his 2004 CNBC show, The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch, and is now a regular contributor to MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Whether you agree with his perspective or not, Deutsch is passionate, entertaining, and smart. His podcast is worth listening to for his brands of the week and his candid conversations with media mavens like Kara Swisher, George Stephanopoulos, and Alyssa Farah Griffin. T
