FIEADMASTER'S ADDRESS

Dear Class of 1989,

First, I want to oFfer my heartiest congratulations to each o[you for having successfully completed your tenure at St. Martin's with distinction. Individually you contributed significantly ro every department and division. You were leaders long before you were seniors and your direction was purposeful and constructive.

Second, the Class of 1989 has earned a special place in the hearts of the faculty. Over the years, each class develops a distinct personality which seems to be remembered by both members and flaculty. You will be remembered for your class unity and your willingness to rise to a challenge. You seem to have remembered the value of each classmate and to each you gave support and a place. There is no Christian ideal greater than valuing your fellow man.

lJ7hen faced with change or competition, your approach was to view the challenge in proper perspecrive, develop a realistic solution, and bring individual srrengrhs of the class to bear. This solid, thoughtful manner has endeared you to the St. Martin's community and your achievements have given us all reasons to be proud.

I wish each of you the very best as you venture outside the protective confines of school and family. I hope you will continue to appreciate the value of individuals and that you will remember rhat success is most often generated through maintaining proper perspective, offering thoughtful solutions, and teamwork.

HEAVEII LY DAY5

On May 6, 1989, the Lower School playground and baseball fields were transformed into a fairground. From pony rides to dunking booths, there was something to enteftain the whole family. Before the festivities began on the playground, the piner patter of running feet could be heard. If you did not have enough exercise running in the races, baseball games were played all day, and everyone was induded, fathers, daughters, sons, and faculry.

Nflhile some people played baseball, others had their hair braided, dunked various people in the dunking booth, or rode ponies. Still others had a chance to sit in the sun and eat the delicious food being prepared all day and listen to the music performed by the band Opus. Hats off to all involved!!

The Middle School Show group, under the direction of Ms. Candace Armstrong and Mr. James Cox, performed throughout the year off-campus and on. They were also featured in the "American Montage" held in the spring.

UPPER SCHOOL SHO\TGROI]P

The Upper School ShowgrouP, directed by Jimmy Cox, was a success this year. They began their season with a well-done performance at the Republican Convention. TheY also performed at various school functions such as the school fashion show and the Christmas Program. The Showgroup wrapped uP the Year with a rip to Oklahoma and the American Montage. At Oklahoma, many schools participated in a nation-wide festival of the arts. The Showgroup was recognized for its effort. Finally, the American Montage was a Performance consisting of songs from the past and the Present. The Showgroup did an excellent iob this year. Congratulations to all involved.!!

SENIOR $TEIRD DAY

On October 28, 1988, the Seniors abandoned their traditional personalities and assumed the personas oftheir favorite uncanny beings. NO-we're not talking about Senior Teacher Day, but of Senior r$(/eird Day. A plethora ofperverse personalities graced the school with their eerie presence on that wicked day. Charles Manson headed the crew of peculiar souls, including Elvira, suburban housewives, and a nappy posse of funabulists. An entire solar system orbited the school, which was teeming with dwarfs, hairdresser customers, and sundry other characters. Abbot and Costello even discussed the national pastime for the chapel congregation. 'When the day came to an end, these monstrosities departed down their own paths, never again to rear their ugly heads on our camPus.

SENIOR FAREWELL ADDRESS

For the dass of 1989, St. Mardn's is a community with a strong sense of purpose and spirit. The mission of St. Martin,s is education in the very broadest sense of that word. The achievement of that mission comes through the creation of a spirit: a spirit of advenrure, a spirit of caring, and a feeling that each individual person counts and contributes to the overall success of the school.

As we graduate, we leave with the sincere hope that we have, in some way, contributed to that spirit. Good luck to the class of 1990.

Upon reaching their final year in high school, Seniors often feel a certain confidence in their mastery of their academic subjecs. Thanks to a program initiated by Ms. Wells, seniors now have a chance to flaunt rheir scholarly 'supertise' by assuming the iob of the teachet of their choice for a day. This educational opportunity often becomes a most humbling experience, as students leam the truly rigorous demands which are placed on our faculty. Following a disheartening loss to Buras, the Senior football players doffed their grimy ierseys and clad themselves in spiffy tuxedos, in preparation for the 1988 Homecoming dance, held in the small gym on October 9. Throngs of excited students also flooded into the gym, setting the stage for an evening of unbridled revelry.

Brand Leask and Fanny Martinez, winners of the dance contest, displayed their terpsichordian talents as DJ Sonny rocked the house with a veritable medley of hit songs. The evening's events culminated with the crowning of the Queen, the gorgeous Stacy McGeehan. In the minds of all who attended, the dance will long be remembered as the unique event that it was.

The countdown began immediately after the Christmas holidays. Those who had not already made plans franricaly called ro make reservations and find a chaperone. Sun, sand, and fun awaited the students, beckoning them to drop everything and race to the beaches. All the srudents were ready to depart and reach their destinies. Once there, they tried to get settled in the ovedy crowded condominiums and inns so that they could race to the beaches and work on thek tans. At night, there wete parties where they could meet new and interesting faces. At the end, all were sad to refirrn to the daily life after a week of fuo io the sun.

sHE STOOPS TO CONQTJER

On November 18th and 19th, a dedicated cast of sixteen talented upperschoolers performed Oliver Goldsmith's classic play She Stoops to Conqter. The audiences were enchanted by the mellifluous ufterances of ancient colloquialisms and the beaury of l8th century garb. The cast members themselves relished the thrill of experiencing life in the 1700's. Overall, the elaborate costumes, the inspired perflormances, and many weeks o[ intensive work combined to produce a mosr enjoyable spectacle.

An Eveni.g of One Acts I

An Evening of One Acts is presented as a showcase for the Drama dasses and Drama club members. Sometbing Uttspoken, a powerful one-act by Tennessee \Tilliams was performed by the advanced acting class. These students spent the year working on techniques and skills and on developing total characterizations. The melo-drama, Don't Sign tbe Deed, Tbere't a Stranger at tbe Door, was performed by the Drama II dass. This is a Level I acting class that focuses on basic acting skills. Balcony Scene, a provocative drama, showcases other students who either have been in drama dasses or prior productions.

R.IIUG DAY

A ring: a never-ending cirde, a symbol of uniry, eternal friendship, and an expensive token of our meaningful experience in high school. On March 9, 1989, the upper school sudents, faculry members, and many Parents Sathered in the Dan and Francis tU(hite Chapel to witness the traditional events of the Ring Day ceremony. Following Ms. Long's revealirig insights into the histories of several esteemed faculty members, those assembled watched with mindful reverence as the members of the Class of '89 bestowed the senior rings upon the members of the Class of '90, next year's Seniors. After the ceremony, the Juniors and Seniors enjoyed a distinct lunch at Steven and Martin's Restaurant. The students then returned to St. Martin's and prepared to take their respective places in the school. Each student would remember their experience by this one lasting token, his ring.

SENIOR SLEEPOVER

The class of 1989 re-scheduled and re-scheduled the annual "sleepover" because of rain, but finally, the bad weather ceased and the sleepover occurred on May 10, 1989. Tents, sleeping bags and bodies were strewn across the quad Thursday morning as the sun came up. Needless to say, the sleepy-eyed seniors sluggishly made their way to their classes, and the sleepover was a success!

The Literary Rally is an annual academic competirion which allows students to demonsffate superior academic achievement in a number of subject areas. Faculry members selec their sffongest students to tepresent St. Martin's at the District Rally held at UNO. Here they compere against students ftom 27 other Division III high schools. At the State Rally held in Baton Rouge, winners then have the chance to pit their wits against the best in the state.

This year the Key CIub has been extremely active both in the school and in rhe communiry at large. Ve have organized many social occasions flor the teenage girls living in St. John's House, including a Christmas parry and a bowling excursion. In addition, we provided ushering, babysitting, coUating, and various other services to the school throughout the year. Because of our extensive service record, we recieved recognition on both the divisional and district levels at monthly divisional functions and the annual disrricr convention. The members, throughout rhe year, provided oursranding service to the community and enjoyed themselves doing it.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

\D7hen most people think of Outdoor Educarion, they think of the "rough" life, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, and white water rafting. To some, these things sound awful, but to others, it is paradise.

This year, the Outdoor Education class went rock dimbing and hiking in Texas and the Smoky Mountains. They also went canoeing in the Econfina and Strong Rivers. Some people may not even know where these places are, but to an Outdoor Education participant, these places are like a second home.

The St. Genesius Players spent Spring Break in New York seeing 5 Broadway productions. The group had raised money through Bake Sales, a gar^ge sale and a raflfle. Everyone had such a grand time, it was decided to make the New York trip an annual event.

This year has been a pariculady sensational one for the Fashion Club, co-sponsored by Mrs. Cheryl West and Mrs. Toni Caserta and presided over by Charlee Marshall. I[e started off the year by inviting a .variety of speakers to our meetings to show off their knowledge of rhe wodd of high fashion, and after the first semester, we geared up for the highlight of the school year-our annual fashion show held downtown ar rhe Hotel Intercontinental. Prior to the show, our guests were ffeared to rhe mlent and energy of the STM Showgroup and the hard working jazzercisers from rhe Club. Everyone who acended the show was enthusiastic about our efforts(especially those who won a glamorous door prize). All in all, we've had a good time working hard this ye,u, and that's why we're a success.

Student Council

The main purpose of the Student Council is to provide ways and means to promote honor and integrity among the student body. The task of the Student Council is to develop school spirit and provide experience in democratic citizenship. The aim of the Council is also to provide cooperation between the administration and students and to promore general welfare in terms of Christian living for both faculty and students.

Science Fiction

The 1988-89 Science Fiction Club had an excellent premier year. Besides reading and discussing Science Fiction and Fantasy novels, the parcicipants spent a good deal of time playing fantasy role-playing games. The group traveled to Gulf Port, Mississippi to attend a role-playing and fantasy convention for three days where they competed in a National Role Playing Game Association toumament and met the famous fantasy author Joel Rosenberg.

The 1988-89 sezrson begar with a shaky start. Coach Alan Smith came in the middle of the year and tried to continue rhe winning record of the girls swim team, and with hard work and determination, he succeeded.

Led by Seniors, Raynal Ruch, Sarah McEachin, and Ann Polard, the Saints finished with a record of 8-1. The Saints also won both the Ciry and Srate Meets. At the State Meet, Meghan I7illiams and Ashley Tappin succeeded in winning both events in which they swam.

The boys team, which began with a rough srart, placed 8th in the State Meet, and was led by Senior Buddy Bell and Sophomofe Bryan Frentz.

On October 18th and 19th, the sixth grade class journeyed to Holy Redeemer for its first middle school activity, a two day class overnight. After arriving, the students tested their dexteriry on the traditional obstacle course and performed group skits for evening entertainment. The next morning, the class congregated for a moving chapel service. The students then loaded the bus, grabbed some snacks, and prepared for the long bus ride home.

The theme of class uniry was stressed on the seventh grade overnight at Paul B. Johnson State Park on October 13-14. When they were not involved in volleyball, football, or eating smores, the students invested time in becoming better acquainted with their teachers and fellow class members. The class left the campsite after rwo days of rousing revelry and returned as a much closer group.

As the buses came to a halt, the eighth graders poured out onro the campsite at Paul B. Johnson State park in Mississippi, eager to enjoy their last overnight as middle schoolers. The class spent rwo days boating, swimming, and playing volleyball. The successful overnight, which lasted from September 8th to the 9th, was highlighted by the artistic splatter-painting oI class t-shirts.

7th Grade Flalloween Party

On October 28, 1988, an eerie mystique filled the cafeteria as a masked mob of seventh-graders prepared to celebrate their Halloween dance. The ghastly event attracted such notorious "stars" as the coneheads, Seasame Street's Oscar, and several members of Metallica and other Hard Core Rock Bands. The more generic genre was also represented by pirates, cheerleaders, pumpkins, and the mundane mass murderers. These horrid creatures danced, ate, and enjoyed their wicked company until the festival was ended by a call to sweet sleep.

Heritage Day ,

This year's Heritage Day was a big success. All three classes played different parts: the settlers, cowboys, and Indians. They all performed plays, dressed as their characters, and split up into groups to display their projects. Next, Mrs. Kaston gave a demonstration on her spinning wheel. After that, they joined together to have a feast prepared by the faculry and parents. Finally, everyone was tired from a long day, so they went to the library to watch an old \Testern movie. Heritage Day was hard work for the students, but in the end, it was worth it!!

The Lion, the lf,Iitch, and the Ulardrobe

The Middle School production of The Lion, the lVitcb, and the Wardrobe played to a full house in January. The 26 member cast of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders received well-deserved thunderous applause. These srudenrs had been in rehearsal since Thanksgiving and consequently gave very smooth performances. The lion roared, ruled, and reigned; the witch cast evil spells; the children went back and forth into Narnia; and the Narnians fought battles and aided rhe children. The enchanting crearures, such as rhe dotty Mr. Beaver and the dingy Mrs. Beaver, charmed the audience. The play showcased some very talented actors and actresses.

7th Grade Trip

This year the seventh grade took a trip to Southwest Louisiana April 24-25. First they visited LUMCON, Louisiana University's Marine Consortium, in Cocodrie, Louisiana. \(hile there, they learned about Louisiana's receding coastline, swamps, and salt water erosion. Next they toured the Tobacco plant in New Iberia, then drove to Lafayette and spent the night in a hotel with a game room. There they relaxed by playing pool, ping-pong and swimming. The next morning they continued their journey going to St. Martinville to see an old church and then on to an Acadian village. This historic village was designed to portray how the Cajuns lived 200 years ago. The Iast stop on the trip was Baton Rouge where the students visited both houses oflegislature in the state capital. All in all the seventh grade excursion was not only an educational trip but an enioyable one.

The girls' basketball team placed second in the Ivy League Tournament. They also won rwo other toufnaments.

The girl's soccer team record was 6- I - 1 they scored foumy-three points versus their opponent's thifteen.

The middle school gids track won the Ivy Ieague Tournament.

In the state meet, Paige Busch received first place in the 1600 merer, and she received second place in 3200 meter.

The varsity football team's record was 4-2.In their last game of the season, they beat Country Day 30 rc6.

The boys' basketball team was 16-4 this year. In the tournament that they won, Greg Page was voted MVP, and Fritz Koch and Scott Barris were voted all tournament.

The Many Faces Of . . LO$rER

Lower Schoolers began what was to be an exciting and busy new school year in September. While catching up with old friends and making new ones was on the agenda for many, getting back to the monkey bars was also a popular activity. The children in PK were already busy learning about sharks and scuba diving in their classes, and rhe highlighr was a rrip to Sharkee's Reef. On Fridays, enthusiastic Lower Schoolers could be heard cheering for the Football team at pep rallies and games.

As October began rhe children knew that meant one thing: HOMECOMING! All of the lower School got into the spirit at Homecoming. On the day of the game they all wore their special Homecoming t-shirts.

Towards the end of October the 4th graders prepared for the upcoming elections by making actual voring booths and staging a mock election. Of course, George Bush won by a landslide.

As Holloween approached, everyone was talking about what costume they'd be wearing. The big day was highlighted by Halloween parties with ghost stories and dunking for apples.

November was a busy month for all Lower Schoolers. The second graders began the month with an informational and also very exciting trip to Oak Alley Plantation. All of the Lower School got into the act with St. Martin's Day. On the big day, all the children wore red, white and blue. They played games, then they joined the Middle and Upper Schoolers for a giant picnic in front of the Big House. Before they knew it, it was time for Thanksgiving. The littte kids all had fun dressing up as Pilgrims.

'With the arrival of December, Lower Schoolers found it difficult to think of anything but Christmas and Santa Claus. The spirit of Christmas could be found in each classroom, which was festively decorated for the season. For weeks all the children had been preparing for the big Christmas play. After all the songs had been rehearsed and costumes made, the show was put on, and it was a big success.

After welcoming in the New Year, it didn't take long for Lower Schoolers to get back to work. The cold weather had arrived, but it did not slow down anything from singing in chapel to just playing on the swings. On Senior Teacher Day, Lower Schoolers got a chance to be taught by the "big kids". While the children got a break from their regular teachers, the seniors got a chance to see what it's like to be the teacher.

In February, all o[ the Lower School got inro the spirit of Carnival. The PK and K were preparing for their annual Mardi Gras parade. They decorated floats, gathered beads, and made costumes. On the big day, the whole Lower School came our to watch. To the tune of "Mardi Gras Mambo" and other popular Carnival songs, the parade marched through the Lower School quad throwing beads to excited revelers.

Other exciting events this month were the )th grade trip to NASA and the Authorfest.

Spring arrived at STM. The older kids were busily preparing for the annual Science Fair. They put their genius to work exploring new worlds of scientific discovery. Their results could be seen in elaborate presentations in the Little gym.

'While the older kids were resring their scientific knowledge, the younger kids were axiously looking forward ro rhe arrival of the Easter bunny.

Spring had arrived at StM, and Lower Schoolers during April were busy as bees. The month began with the Brazilian Carnival in the Little gym. The children learned about the music and instruments of Brazil. Next came Community Bargain Days. The children in PK lined up at mock banks to get money to spend in the various stores. At the end of April the Lower School Festival of the Arts was held. The second graders put on their nice spring clothes for the annual May Day, while in the chapel, the 5th graders put on a spectacular play.

May was one of the busiest months of the whole year. On the first weekend, Lower Schoolers flocked to Heavenly Days to play games and win prizes. The month continued with the Kindergarteners "whooping" it up on Cowboy Day. As usual Indian Day was a huge success. Third graders went to the Headmaster's lawn to play games and present a show. Meanwhile the 4th graders had tutned the Limle gym into an international hodgepodge for !(orld Day. They made foods from all ovet the world and entemained theit guests with songs and dances from many countries. As May came to an end, the only thing on most Iower Schooler's minds was a long restful summer.

In Memory Of Mildred E. Herron

The greatest sadness that the communiry experienced this year was the untimely death of our friend and former student, Millie Herron. She was a wonderful person whose warmth and friendliness extended to all she knew.

She always had a smile for everyone. !?'hen she laughed, everyone laughed with her. She was active in all areas of school life, Volleyball to Homecoming Cheedeader, she did it all. Nothing could slow her down.

'We will miss her. She represented a person we would all like to be. \U7e feel blessed having known her.
