Dear Friends, It is an honor to serve the families, faculty, staff, and alumni of St. Martin’s Episcopal School. I am not only the Interim Head of School, but also a proud graduate of St. Martin’s. My three sons (twin third-graders and a sixth-grader) are all thriving in this unique and very special environment.

St. Martin’s is a place where students explore together and learn from each other to achieve academic excellence. Our mission is to prepare them to thrive in college and in life through faith, scholarship, and service. Our faculty consists of talented and compassionate educators who model the goals of the school in their daily lives. These remarkable teachers and I are committed to nurturing, supporting, and loving students as they grow intellectually, spiritually, and physically at our school and in their communities. The Episcopal traditions of St. Martin’s have played an integral role in my own formation as a person, educator, administrator, and father. I am proud to call St. Martin’s home and invite you to visit our campus and explore our website to get a taste of the extraordinary school we are. Why I Give INTERVIEW WITH JORDAN STONE ’05 As a bright-eyed sixth-grader, Jordan Stone walked onto St. Martin’s campus ready to make friends, enjoy wonderful traditions, and learn. He never imagined leaving with an everlasting love for the place he called home for seven years. While at StM, Jordan was active on the student council and the speech and debate team, where his love for government and the law flourished. He treasures his time in these two clubs. “[StM helped me] build a passion for government and the law, and that has followed me wherever I’ve been,” said Jordan. Jordan fondly remembers sitting in the Upper School as Mr. Charles Rivet passionately taught civics. Mr. Rivet played a pivotal role in Jordan’s life, helping him grow his fondness for civics which has formed the foundation for his whole career. “Mr. Rivet was always willing to stay a little bit [later] and talk through ideas. I have a ton of respect for him.” Thinking of his English teachers and the dreaded Locke and Hobbes paper from Mrs. Mary Quinet’s history class, Jordan 4 | Impact Report 2020-21
said, “St. Martin’s taught me how to write. I struggled through that Locke and Hobbes paper, but I enjoyed it. I appreciate Mrs. Lee Klebba, Mrs. Eileen Beckman, Ms. Michelle Scandurro, and Mrs. Quinet for their patience and help. I was young and headstrong and probably horrible to teach at times. They taught me how to write, which created the foundation of everything that I do.”
When asked why he gives back to St. Martin’s, Jordan answered without hesitation.
Upon graduation in 2005, Jordan was prepared to attend a college nearby, but his college counselor, Mrs. Edith Long, encouraged him to look elsewhere. “Without Mrs. Long, I would have never thought to apply to a school in New York and push myself.” With her guidance, Jordan applied to Vassar College and graduated with a B.A. in geography, followed by his Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University.

Jordan has grown into a hardworking, intelligent, and kindhearted man. He uses the skills and abilities he learned at St. Martin’s to create a successful career at the Association of American Railroads, where he supports the industry’s government affairs and advocacy efforts in Washington. It is not lost on him that St. Martin’s had a large impact on his academic life and, even more importantly, his character. Jordan had this to say when asked what message he would want to leave the current students at St. Martin’s. “Be present and find the things that you enjoy. You are only young once. Stay on top of your work, but don’t turn down things that can help you grow. Make sure that you celebrate the successes of others as much as you celebrate your own. If you find people that do the same, you’ll always have a good community around you. That is something that St. Martin’s has always done a really great job of: fostering the spirit of community.”

What is your fondest memory from St. Martin’s? Oh, that is a great question! I would say it was the day I was tapped into the National Honor Society, second semester of my senior year. I remember the gathering, and it was the first time my grades were ever at the point where I knew I could be a candidate. The whole place was filled, and all of a sudden I heard this little child in the back of the room, and I thought, “Oh, that’s my brother Taylor. I must be getting in this time!” Then they reached over and tapped me on the head, and that was really exciting. I was so honored. How do you still keep in contact with your friends from StM? Originally, there were just a few that I really kept in touch with. People move, and time goes by, and you lose those [contacts]. But then...Facebook. And once Facebook came, we all found each other fairly quickly. My kids have let me know that Facebook is not really cool anymore, but I can never get rid of Facebook because I’ll lose all of my St. Martin’s friends. Who influenced you the most while at StM? There are so many people. Dorothy Porter, whom I just adored and idolized. Her sweet smile and the way her eyes would go into slits. Her sweet husband, Tony Porter, who was a coach. My mom taught at St. Martin’s, so I knew a lot of the Upper School teachers really well. Mr. Perez, the Spanish teacher, was amazing. I just loved him. Another is Mr. Schwartz, who was the head of the Middle School at that time. He started the 8th grade trip. He was definitely someone that we all idolized. Mrs.

Roniger, who is also on the Board of Visitors, was my crush teacher. I think I had art every Monday or something, and I had a favorite dress that I wore every Monday to impress her. What is the most important thing you learned while at StM? The value of going to a Christian school. I look back and realize how important it is. I look back, and time goes by, and this world becomes more divided and more secular, and I look back, and I’m so grateful [for St. Martin’s]. I remember the songs we sang in the chapel...and every time I hear those songs, I just start crying because I think about my time at St. Martin’s. Describe StM in three words? Safe. St. Martin’s was a safe place to grow up. Caring would go with that. It was a very caring place. I look back at my life in New Orleans, and it’s a place to me that I was always safe. I always was loved. And finally, relationships. Lifelong relationships with people my age and with faculty, and I’m a big relationship-oriented person.
How did StM prepare you to thrive in college and in life? Oh wow...I walked into college like it was just another year at St. Martin’s. I was so prepared for all of the classes. I walked right in, and I didn’t even skip a beat. Academically, I was perfectly prepared for SMU (Southern Methodist University). I was so grateful for that because a lot of people struggled their freshman year, and St. Martin’s was just the perfect college preparatory school. What message do you have for the soon-to-be graduates of StM? Keep in touch with your friends. Visit the school when you can. When I come to town, I love to drive by. Remember the school when you are looking at your annual gifts. Remember the place that gave you so much. You have to give back to those places. I give back to the places that gave a lot to me. St. Martin’s is
a place that I will always give back to. It starts with thanking the institutions that changed my life. Relationships matter, and my relationship with St. Martin’s is something that I will be grateful for until the day that I die. What is something people may not know about you? I have my Expert qualification in riflery. I earned that at summer camp, and it took me about eight years to do it. I worked really hard. I earned it the very last week, and it mattered a lot to me. I wasn’t an athlete, this was just something really unusual and cool and something that I am really proud of.

The StM Experience
The Arts The art program at StM is rich with a wide range of artistic outlets. Creative spaces abound on campus, from music to drawing and from pottery to theater. Students in each division, from the Cottage to the Upper School, are able to “color outside the lines” every day.
Science & Curriculum Our rigorous curriculum is designed to prepare students for college and for life. We use an interdisciplinary approach that mimics learning in the real world. Gifted instructors teach students in various ways, focusing on the best way to reach each student. Students can utilize our Gibbs Family Center of Innovation + Design (CID), with access to laser cutters, a multimedia recording studio, drone operations, and so much more. The importance of science as innovation and design is clear across our campus. 8 | Impact Report 2020-21
Faith & Service St. Martin’s is rooted in its Episcopal faith. Upper, Middle, and Lower School students benefit from attending a chapel service at least once a week where they learn lessons from the Bible that are relevant to their everyday lives. Our students understand, from a very young age, the importance of helping others. They participate in service projects, service hours, and community fundraisers throughout the year.
Athletics With 20 LHSAA-sanctioned sports, St. Martin’s offers activities that will suit every type of athlete. Our athletic program is filled with knowledgeable and capable coaches who share the fundamentals of the game while also teaching our scholar-athletes about character. Many of our teams perform at the playoff level and participate in AllMetro and All-State competitions. StM is proud to be the home of so many award-winning athletes!

Get Ready For This Year’s
Hurricane Ida Relief Fund Southern Louisiana was devastated by the effects of Hurricane Ida. Our St. Martin’s community was not excluded from this. Families, teachers, administrators, and staff members had to pick up the pieces of what they lost on August 29, 2021. St. Martin’s teaches our students to abide by three pillars: faith, scholarship, and service. The pillar of service could not be more vital than it is today. Over the last few months, we have watched our community help their neighbors in a time of need. Following Hurricane Ida, faculty, staff, and students came together to strengthen our area in various ways. One way was through the Ida Relief Fund. Parents and other supporters raised money for members of the StM community who were devastated by Hurricane Ida. We sincerely thank all who gave to the Ida Relief Fund.

Golf Tournament MAY 2021 After a year of uncertainty and change, St. Martin’s was grateful to see parents, alumni, and friends come together and have a great time in support of the athletic program at the StM Golf Tournament on May 19, 2021.
