FAMOUSLY, homeowners have had a golden opportunity to improve their homes and tackle DIY during the many Covid-related lockdowns over the past 12 months. Just as prevalent a trend, but perhaps less celebrated, is business owners also taking the opportunity of this strangest of periods to tackle long-put-off projects. Wanted to revamp the office but wondered how to do it while everyone was at their desks? Well 2020/2021 have proven a golden opportunity to do that. Many of the fastener, tool and related businesses we've spoken with have grasped the proverbial nettle and revamped online systems, re-jigged warehouse space and other measures to boost operational efficiency. Nord-Lock provides a perhaps extreme example of this – spending significant sums on 3 sizeable factory expansions during the pandemic year (turn the page for more on that). Recruitment and training new joiners has remained a socially distanced challenge for all sectors, not least the fastener biz. In markets deeply committed to apprenticeships, including Germany, additional recruitment challenges have been inflicted on fastener businesses who would, in the normal run of things, use recruitment exhibitions. With such shows firmly off the table, reaching out to new talent has become even harder, which could represent an existential danger for large companies. By coincidence, we’ve just launched a regular apprentice feature (page 77). Each issue, we’ll interview apprentices from fastener businesses, all to highlight up and coming talent in the industry – the first of a number of initiatives we have planned on that everimportant topic.

GUEST EDITOR COMMENT FREDRIK MEULLER, CEO OF NORD-LOCK, IS GUEST EDITOR OF THIS ISSUE OF TORQUE MAGAZINE

TO SAFEGUARD HUMAN LIVES AND CUSTOMER INVESTMENTS IS OUR RAISON DÉTRE I had high expectations when I joined Nord-Lock Group and I can honestly say they have been exceeded. It is a great company with amazing employees possessing unique competence and experience to secure critical bolting solutions, and truly the global leader driving innovation in the field. To safeguard human lives and customer investments is our raison détre Our solid owner AB Latour has fully supported us during 2020 and their long-term commitment has ensured us to invest in expanding three of our large factories – which is really positive. 2020 saw a flight to safety - when things get difficult, everyone wants to mitigate their risk exposure and having us as an reliable partner with lots of experience from different industries has been critical for many customers. Many big end consumer project decisions were deferred so now there is quite a backlog, so I think we will see more infrastructure investments this year. And in any downturn you see opportunities in mergers and acquisitions, so I expect some owners of fastener companies that struggled during the pandemic will be reaching out this year. I joined the company two years ago, after roles at JP Morgan, McKinsey & Company and global polymer giant Trelleborg. Nord-Lock had // Many big consumer project grown rapidly, both organically and through decisions were deferred so now bolt-on acquisitions; the Superbolt business in there is quite a backlog. I think 2011, Boltight in 2015 and Expander in 2016. we will see more infrastructure There was a need to focus on structure and efficiency, invest in systems and create an investments this year. // operational platform to ‘earn our right to grow’. We also integrated more into digital solutions as part of our efficiency strategy. Our focus has moved on to growth and innovation. It’s important we raise the bar with new product and solutions, and work closely with end users. Developments like our LST – Load Sensing Tensioner – is a fantastic innovation and saves a lot of time and money for end users. It’s also given us a different business model - we are no longer selling a product, we are selling uptime. We are also keen to ensure that sustainability becomes a natural part of our DNA. One of our biggest growth opportunities is simply in growing awareness, making people aware that we exist and the kind of safety solutions we can provide. Nord-Lock Group has 600 employees worldwide and in 2020 we’ve put a lot of focus in education, knowledge transfer and employee engagement. We were even awarded top 5 “Employer of the year” in Sweden by Briliant Future. As a result we came out of 2020 stronger, tighter as a team and we managed to keep the wheels spinning. 2020 has been a busy year for us and I am happy see that all our effort and learnings along the way makes it easier for our customers and partners to do business with us.

WILL 2021 BE AN ACQUISITION AND MERGER BONANZA?

2

021 could prove particularly busy for mergers and acquisitions in the fastener and related indus‐ tries, with a significant number having been made in recent weeks and months. Late 2020 and early 2021 brought a number of M&As amidst further disrup‐ tion following a tumultuous year for supply chains in virtually all sectors. Downturns have typically heralded M&A opportunities for a variety of reasons, including businesses embattled by the pandemic and lockdown looking for support as well as long‐planned mergers unrelated to Covid difficulties. Some of the recent M&As in the fastener and related industries include: February saw Würth Industry North America announce the acquisi‐ tion of Atlantic Fasteners Inc, bolstering Würth’s new construction services business division.

Lederer GmbH has taken over all shares in NORMTEC Montage‐ und Befes‐ tigungstechnik GmbH, with effect from 1 January. The Wuppertal company has been successfully selling stainless steel fasteners for seven years and will continue to exist as an independent company. Also in January, Selco and Woodies owner Grafton Group agreed to buy building materials distributor and DIY retailer Proline Architectural Hardware (“Proline”). The €10.8 million revenue distributor of architectural ironmongery products for doors operates from a single location in Dublin. Bossard took a 40% stake in start‐up company MultiMaterial‐Welding AG, Stansstad, Switzerland, in late 2020. The fastening technology business focuses on multi‐materials and welding and has developed a wide‐ranging portfolio of

innovative products that use ultrasonic energy to create form‐fit connections. Home improvement giant Home Depot grew its presence as an MRO provider when it agreed to acquire HD Supply Holdings, Inc., a leading North American distributor of maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) products. According to the Harvard Business Review: “Businesses are, or should be, examining their existing lists of poten‐ tial acquisition targets and should be prepared to act, as deal premiums are likely to come down and assets that companies had been reluctant to sell may become available. “But the window for maximising value could be relatively short, if history is any indication.” Keep up with the latest M&A news on www.torque-expo.com

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

// I studied geology and after finishing my MSc, I decided to take on the great opportunity and challenge to run the family company. //

STEPHANIE VELTKAMP

JEVEKA

Stephanie Veltkamp, Managing Director at Jeveka, discusses the company’s growth in both location and staff numbers, the implementation of its new IT system and the importance of trust and communication within a team since she started working at the company 15 years ago…

12

torque-expo.com

How did you get into the industry? Jeveka is a family business. My grandfather started the company in 1937, and now my brother Adriaan and I are the owners. That said, it was not an obligation for us to take over the company. I studied geology and after finishing my MSc, I decided to take on the great opportu‐ nity and challenge to run the family company. After some serious talks with my brother about 15 years ago, we decided to go for it!

SINCE 1973

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS In 2014, Jeveka moved the company from Amsterdam into its new location in Almere.

What kind of advantages are there for a fastener company that is family owned? As we do not have a board of directors, we have the possibility to make our own decisions and can decide where we want to invest without having to answer to outsiders. Other than that, a family company also needs to work hard to meet and exceed customer expectations.

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? In 2014 we moved the company from Amsterdam to Almere to a new building. This was needed because we required more space. Since then we have grown from 65 to over 100 employ‐ ees, we hit this milestone in October and in November we switched to a completely new IT system.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and/or the company since you started? The demands of customers have changed. When I started, the product was the most important. These days it is not just the product that needs to be high quality, also the service, logistical solutions and paperwork needs to meet customer demands.

What is your vision as an owner for the future of Jeveka? To further grow Jeveka’s supporting departments like engi‐ neering, supply chain, marketing and quality control. A few years ago, the tasks and services done by these departments were done by one or two people. This was a very fragile base. At Jeveka we always strive for good quality, not just in our products, but also in our services and relations with customers. By growing the engineering, quality control and supply chain departments we are able to give full support to our customers.

// At Jeveka we always strive for good quality, not just in our products, but also in our services and relations with customers. //

What does your day to day job involve? My main job is to talk and especially listen to people. I spend quite a lot of time talking to the managers in the company. I know I can trust them and they know that, but that makes it even more important to keep in touch. I support them where needed, as a sparring partner, or to give direction to opera‐ tions. In November we implemented a new IT system, we have been working on this for 1.5 years. This, together with Covid‐ 19, put a lot of pressure on the company and all employees. Luckily, we have a lot of motivated and qualified people work‐ ing for us, my job is to listen and find the pressure points, to motivate people to continue and to make sure communication between departments takes place.

14

torque-expo.com

What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? The cooperation. It is a relatively small industry, and many people know each other, which makes it possible to develop strong connections. www.jeveka.com

In November, Jeveka switched to a new IT system which the company had been working on for almost two years

COVER PROFILE PGB-EUROPE + HAPAX

THE HAPAX WOOD SCREW > “THE IDEAL SCREW FOR EVERY SITUATION” Patented, produced by PHC Fasteners (pgb-Europe’s joint-venture factory), ETA approved and with an environmentally friendly coating... Torque Magazine uncovers the elements behind the successful Hapax wood screw...

Y

ou don’t have to look far for reasons why the Hapax wood screw is so popular with professionals. They owe their favourable status with top craftsmen and women to their low screw‐in torque combined with a high screw‐in speed. Work‐ ing with Hapax wood screws saves time, says pgb‐Europe, the company behind these quality and patented wood screws. The design is based on years of experience and the screws are produced and packaged under strict quality requirements.

In addition, the environmentally friendly BlueTop coating provides an extra corrosion resistance which is up to 10 times higher than conventional galvanisation. And that’s all without mentioning that these screws have successfully obtained a European Technical Assessment (ETA). Hapax wood screws are produced with strict quality controls in pgb‐Europe’s own production facility, PHC Fasten‐ ers, in Vietnam. By choosing to invest in its own production

Hapax’s patented “triple thread point” is backed by the unique geometry of the countersunk milling segment under the head of the screw.

facility, pgb‐Europe retains total control over the entire production process and is therefore able to guarantee and meet the highest requirements and standards. What makes these screws really unique is the patented “triple thread point” and the equally patented unique geome‐ try of the countersunk milling segment under the head of the screw. The “triple thread point” ensures that the screw grips the wood quickly and holds it firmly when being screwed in due to its low insertion point. This guarantees that the screw is highly suitable for use in demanding applications (such as a timber frame construction) and reduces the risk of splitting the wood to a minimum. The specially shaped milling ribs under the head sink into the wood easily and block on metal without damaging it. When you combine the “triple thread point” and the countersunk milling ribs with an optimised thread, these elements ensure a low tightening torque without

// This high-quality screw is also upgraded with a unique BlueTop coating. The BlueTop coating offers up to 10 times more corrosion resistance in a neutral salt spray test than traditional galvanisation. //

compromising the high pull‐out value. The Hapax screws, build on a number of strong advantages: a solid and high‐quality fastening and a pure gain in time. This high‐quality screw is also upgraded with a unique Blue‐ Top coating. The BlueTop coating offers up to 10 times more corrosion resistance in a neutral salt spray test than traditional galvanisation. This makes the screw ideal for use in open construction without direct exposure to the elements, such as under carports or pergolas. As a result, the screws meet the requirements of service class II according to Eurocode 5. The BlueTop coating is free of chromium VI and meets all the requirements of REACH / ROHS. This ensures that the environmental impact during production and recycling is reduced to a minimum. As mentioned before, the Hapax wood screws have recently obtained an ETA assessment for the vari‐ ous screws from 3mm to 8mm diameter, for use in wood constructions. In addition, they are also CE marked. The Hapax wood screw is stocked within an extensive prod‐ uct range and is available as a wood screw or construction screw with a choice between partial or full thread. The screws are packaged in a sturdy window box. The box can be opened in the front (flap) as well as from the top (fully opened, making it easier to reach for the screws). There is a stick‐fit in each box, so that professionals always have the right bit in their hand. This means that the screw can be screwed in without having to hold it. A full range of Hapax screws can also be purchased together with the handy L‐Boxx. www.pgb-europe.com +32 9 272 70 70 info@pgb-europe.com

BUSINESS BAROMETER

WHY ARE FASTENER PRICES RISING IN 2021? Torque Magazine breaks down some of the key reasons behind the price rises affecting the fixing, fastener and tool industries...

CONTAINER SHORTAGES Container prices have quadrupled in a matter of months, eroding margins to such an extent that importers are having to pass on at least some of the costs. Why the steep rise for these metal boxes? There’s a global shortage – and a vast number of containers in the wrong part of the world and not where they are needed. With availability of containers low, shipping prices have risen for importers to the tune of from $2,000 to $10,000 – understandably hitting margins significantly.

STEEL PRICES AND AVAILABILITY Raw material prices are significantly up; Everything from rubber to aluminium and, inevitably, steel (a per tonne low of $327 in April 2020 to approx. $600 in Feb 2021). Prices have been pushed up in part thanks to steel mill owners operating well under capacity in 2020 while they waited for demand to ramp up again. However demand has returned quicker than expected with one steel mill operator admitting “supply is far from matching demand” (CSC) and citing “higher coking coal prices” pushing up steel prices. We also hear of larger manufacturers making bigger raw material orders to minimise their disruption in anticipation of raw material shortages, constricting supply further still.

STOCK SHORTAGES – CORONA When Covid‐19 shut factories in China back in early 2020, stock shortages were among the early business concerns. Those fears have truly now materialised. Off the record chats confirm that wholesalers are currently operating with far less stock availability than usual. Exacerbated by port disruption, drivers forced to self‐ isolate with Covid‐19 symptoms, storage capacity taken up by government PPE orders, an unforeseen rocket in DIY and construction product… the supply chain is far from ‘normal’ and with scarcity of materials also in the mix, warehouse shelves are emptier than usual.

SPOTLIGHT VICTORY FASTENERS

VICTORY LAYS FOUNDATIONS FOR EXPANSION A significant and strategic expansion of stocks has seen Victory Fasteners take on an additional warehouse with over 300 additional pallet locations. Managing Director Vic Waddison explains the move to Torque Magazine…

V

ictory Fasteners, a leading supplier of high‐grade alloy fasten‐ ers, has built a notable reputation for supporting its distribution customer base across the UK and Europe. Vic Waddison, MD of Victory Fasteners, who has been in the industry for over 40 years, comments: “We started our busi‐ ness eight years ago during the last reces‐ sion. Who would have thought that those challenging times would pale into insignificance when faced with the current global pandemic? “Like many businesses, we had to take stock of our position. We were financially strong but at that point, 12 months ago, none of us could have imagined what was to come. Like others we trimmed, we furloughed, we worked from home and hoped that we would all be back too normal soon, how wrong we were.” With Brexit also looming, the company decided to increase its strategic stocks with emphasis on additional blanks, but particularly more depth of its European stock. During December and January, the company had an additional 100 tonnes of stock arriving to continue to deliver growth in stock and investment. As a consequence, Victory Fasteners has taken an additional 2,300 ft² warehouse able to accommodate over 300 additional pallet positions. Located on its current indus‐ trial estate, this bulk storage facility allows the business to service larger volume enquiries and orders. Vic Waddison continues: “The company has grown impressively over the past seven years and changing the direction of the company into increased conversion of our stock blanks and manufacturing has been the key to that growth, whilst continuing to offer flexibility and reliabil‐ ity. The team have worked diligently with our software company to amend our invoice and GDN templates to accommo‐ date the new export documentation requirements, which we are driving across the whole of our company’s docu‐ mentation. With the possibility of addi‐ tional duty for our export customers on

Victory Fasteners has significantly ramped up its stock of blanks

non‐EU product exported from the UK, we hope that our extensive range of Euro‐ pean stock and our new documentation procedures will make the process of importing from Victory Fasteners a simpler one. “It’s not easy running a business with the constraints that we face today. With further possible challenges pending – price increases, product shortages and extended manufacturer delivery times – make for challenging times ahead, we feel that the prudent decisions we’ve made over the last few months give us a solid

foundation to continue to build on the excellent reputation we’ve established with our distribution customers. “Despite recent challenges, our enthu‐ siasm is still strong, and our team looks forward to helping you with your stan‐ dard and non‐standard requirements.” Victory Fasteners has recently updated its blank stock list with new ranges, don’t hesitate to contact the Sales department on 00 44 1902 544480 or email sales@victo‐ ryfasteners.com to get your copy. www.victoryfasteners.com

FROM THE LATEST DIGITAL ISSUE

“TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU HAVE TO ADAPT” Maria Ford, President of North America Industrial and Commercial Construction Global Tools & Storage at Stanley Black & Decker, discussed adapting during challenging times and the digital and environmental development within the fastener and tool industry in the latest enhanced digital issue of Torque Magazine… It's been a highly disruptive 11 months and in your STAFDA Convention talk you spoke about the need for more digital interaction with customers. Is this something that was always going to become necessary, and has Covid accelerated it? Or has it been driven by the pandemic? Yes, I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has been disruptive. It was a privilege to speak at STAFDA, and the theme I centred my speech around was transformation. As an industry I think we all knew we needed to become increasingly digital, but COVID‐ 19 really accelerated that to a speed no one could’ve anticipated. How do you see the drive towards digital impacting on how sales are made in the industry? Is it a challenge for businesses to adapt? The virtual environment we live in allows people to get infor‐ mation, reviews and products very quickly, and now with COVID‐19 these virtual opportunities are more efficient than ever. Distributors and manufacturers like Stanley Black & Decker were all making changes in the way we did business, but in 2020 a lot of change happened overnight. The opportunity for smaller incremental changes has passed, and we all need to transform the way we think about doing business to create as much impact as we can in every customer interaction…

TECHNICAL SPOTLIGHT

DO BOLTS REQUIRE

LUBRICATION?

Fastener lubrication is a specialist issue, requiring specialist knowledge. Microgleit – part of the Coventya Group – shares its specialist knowledge with Torque Magazine readers…

M

illions of different screws are used to connect components every year. Yet often it is not known, or at least not sufficiently appreciated, that bolts and lubricants are indispensably linked. The function of a threaded connection is based on its ability to build up pretension‐ ing force between parts to be connected. The applied tightening torque is translated via the thread pitch into the resulting preload force. Without lubrication, the fric‐ tion losses of combined head‐ and thread‐ friction reach values up to 90%. That means only 10% of the tightening torque is available to apply pretension force. A defined friction value with low variation is an absolutely mandatory product feature for all threaded connections. The mechani‐ cal elements, used fastener and lubricant are parts of a tribological system. Preten‐ sioning force, coefficient of friction and tightening torque are mathematically connected. Lubrication is the system’s central element. It is important to know that there are many parameters for the tribolog‐ ical system of part and bolts. So, while one and only lubricant for all applications is not possible, the best solution can still be found based on a set of selection criteria.

// A defined friction value with low variation is an absolutely mandatory product feature for all threaded connections. //

24

Too low pretensioning force (as a result of too high friction) can trigger self‐loosening of screws. Too high pretensioning force in combination with dynamic loads could lead to the yield strength of screws being exceeded, with subsequent loss of elasticity leading to breakage.

STANDARD GUIDELINE 1 > NO THREADED CONNECTION WITHOUT LUBRICATION Main issues regarding insufficient lubrication > Pretension load out of spec. This problem may result in leakages (flanges or oil pans) when the used fasteners show different pretensioning force from screw to screw.

Seizure of threads > Seizure of threads can occur during tight‐ ening of screws – for materials such as austenitic steels or zinc platings this is very likely, while other material combina‐ tions show high friction values and high scatter. In the case of bolts made of high‐ temperature steels, thermal expansion can lead to high specific surface pressures on thread flanks: the yield point is exceeded and welding occurs. Corrosion > Water and/or oxidizing gases penetrate the thread area – this causes the screw to seize up due to rust – so normal loosening of the connection becomes impossible. Rust formation blocks the thread and makes it impossible or much more difficult to dismantle the screw as intended.

Selecting the right lubricant for a threaded connection

STANDARD GUIDELINE 2 > FASTENER LUBRICATION IS A SPECIALIST ISSUE

Cracks, Material Brittleness, Stress Corrosion Cracking, Fretting Corrosion > High‐strength and heat‐resistant screws are susceptible to cracks or stress corrosion, cracking under certain conditions. The pres‐ ence of elements such as chlorine, fluorine, sulphur, lead, or aluminium accelerate the effects. Lubricants have to be formulated with metallurgical compatibility in mind.

Fretting corrosion is an extremely effec‐ tive wear mechanism – parts must be protected with highly‐effective lubricants. High Torsional Load During Tightening – Risk of Breakage > High friction automatically generates high torsional stress, which can lead to premature screw breakage.

How to Select the Right Lubricant > The graphic shows the parameters that are crucial to select the right lubricant for a given threaded connection. The selec‐ tion guide is based on tribological system elements, combined with practical expe‐ rience and knowledge of the specific market segment. Various fasteners, mate‐ rials, application and service conditions, specifications etc. require specific lubri‐ cant solutions. In conclusion, the COVENTYA and microGLEIT range offers everything to make it work and last. For more details visit the website: www.microgleit.de

FIRST-CLASS CONNECTIONS Right on schedule: Deutsche Bahn reported its highest punctuality rate in 15 years in 2020. The importance of being on time is well understood by long-term fastener supplier Ferdinand Gross, which is experienced in supplying crucial parts in good time to ensure the smooth running of Deutsche Bahn and other rail companies...

C

ontinuity, experience and quality have been the watch‐words for Ferdinand Gross for more than 150 years, with the company among the largest suppliers of fastening technology in Germany. One speciality of the company is railway‐specific parts; for example bolts, double spring cotter pins, wheel set tape, expansion screws, locking rings and many more. Since 2012, Ferdinand Gross has been the exclusive supplier of Deutsche Bahn AG for fastening elements with the classification Q1. The company supplies Deutsche Bahn with over 60 million parts a year as part of a Kanban system. This Kanban system ensures that the roughly 10,000 customer‐specific parts kept constantly in stock are always available at the more than 400 Kanban storage locations of Deutsche Bahn. Thanks to the integrated Kanban system of Ferdinand Gross, Deutsche Bahn‘s procurement costs have been reportedly cut by 70%. With the FALCON visualisation software, Ferdinand Gross has put the Kanban system on a new level: Deutsche Bahn was one of the first companies to implement the future‐oriented tool. The browser‐based software FALCON gives the customer the visual access to all Kanban shelves within the company. Its virtual cockpit serves as a central control unit and presents the individual shelves and boxes in a visually appealing manner – also in 3D, including the contents of the boxes, the respective delivery quantity, the assembly – everything. With FALCON the storage location can be changed, the filling volume of a container can be altered or additional items can be ordered –

all intuitively from a PC, smartphone or tablet. For Deutsche Bahn, it was above all this innovative system, which optimises the service for the production‐driven material consumption for around 120 production warehouses, which was the decisive factor to award Ferdinand Gross the "DB Supplier of the Year" in 2003 and 2016. Ferdinand Gross also supplies other rail companies that manufacture and main‐ tain rail vehicles. Through years of coop‐ eration, Ferdinand Gross is specialised in railway‐specific parts and offers its own stock programme for these items, which is deliverable on short notice. www.schrauben-gross.com

TORQUE FOCUS RAIL FASTENERS & TOOLS

RAILWAY CUTTING Dormer Pramet provides tools for the railway industry as standard. Here, the firm explains some of the challenges of the sector – and the tool solutions it provides…

R

ailway‐focused cutting tools can often be complex due to the specific requirement needed to machine a certain component in an efficient and highly reliable manner. Therefore, across many applications, the majority of cutting tools for the railway industry are classed as specials, designed with the customer and operation in mind. But not all products! There are several tools within Dormer Pramet’s standard assortment, which can be used to support the production of various railway components. The company’s Penta HD and Econ HN, for example, are milling tools from its Pramet index‐ able range which can be used for various applications, includ‐ ing machining switches, base plates and wagon parts, such as frames, wheel axles and bogies. Machining Switches Rail switches and crossings are the sections that guide trains from one track to another. Dormer Pramet’s assortment encompasses tools for machining switches in all major rail profiles. The 60E1 and 60E2 rail profiles, for example, are the most common, especially in Europe. The type T section rail (flat bottom rails) is suitable for medium and heavy load traffic.

In the crossing part of the two rails, known as the frog, manganese steel, also known as Hadfield Steel, is used. An alloy steel, it is ideal for high impact environments. Manganese steel is not magnetic and has a very high abrasion resistance because the crossing must withstand the highest load on a rail‐ way track. It is a very tough material, with a low hardness (200‐280HB), however, when it is machined, the hardness increases to more than 350HB. Another material used in the production of switches is Bainite steel, which is much easier to machine, even though it is a harder material at 450HB. It is ideally suited to this part of the track due to its high strength and wear resistance. Rail steel must be designed to be able to resist plastic deformation, rolling contact fatigue, bending and thermal stresses during the welding processes and renovations. When machining switches, the design is usually made from a single component and therefore one of the first operations is roughing the top and bottom sections of the rail. This requires a large diameter cutter, enabling the fewest number of passes possible. Both the Penta HD and Econ HN assortments have indexable cutters up to 315mm diameter.

Penta HD The Penta HD milling cutter was specifically developed with switches machining in mind. Allowing operators to utilise the full power of their machines, the Penta HD with PNMU insert is ideally suited to heavy roughing operations in a variety of material, including steels, stainless steels and cast iron. Offering up to 10mm depth of cut and a feed rate of 0.7mm per tooth, the range enables high metal removal rates and productivity. Its double‐sided insert design with ten cutting edges has an available length of 100mm, with each edge numbered for easier indexing. In a recent test example, the Penta HD with PNMU insets, M chipbreaker and M8345 grade was able to machine 4,600mm of track in 39 minutes, with a cutting speed of 70m/min, a feed rate 0.33mm/tooth and an axial depth of cut (ap) at 7mm. Another key feature of the Penta HD is the use of Dormer Pramet’s patented Sidelok technology system, which provides quick and easy clamping and release of the inserts. Econ HN Additional railway operations where standard tools can be used include the machining of base plates – the connecting element which ensures the rail is securely attached to the tie or sleeper. Also, wheel set axles, break‐pad connectors, beam bolsters and bogie frames all require machining into shape. For all these applications, customers demand high productivity, while at the same time, respecting specific production limitations and materials. In any initial machin‐ ing, face milling cutters are usually the most suited tool. This allows for the removal of large amounts of metal and creates a smooth, flat surface and base, before specific shaping can be performed for connectivity with other components. When machining the bottom part of base plates, for example, face milling cutters with diameters up to 160mm are often used. The Pramet Econ HN assortment offers a 45° face milling cutter, which is available from 25 – 315mm in diameter and includes the HNGX 06 and HNGX 09 inserts. Designed to generate improved surface quality, the indexable range can perform both roughing (up to 6mm depth of cut), through to finishing (up to 1mm depth of cut). Its inserts have 12 cutting edges, with a wiper option for higher surface finish and is ideally suited to machining cast iron, as well as steels. High insert density for high productivity and longer tool life, means lower cutting forces are required. Also, a differential tooth pitch and a unique geometry (F, M or R) for each operation, from finishing to roughing, along with an internal coolant supply, provides high tool accuracy and quiet running.

ZAGO – SEALING FASTENERS As the physical and digital worlds converge and become more interconnected, ZAGO Manufacturing Co. is experiencing a surge in sales of its ZAGO high‐tech sealing fasteners and secu‐ rity / tamper‐proof sealing screws. While ZAGO sealing fasten‐ ers, including, sealing screws, nuts, bolts and washers, have always played a pivotal role in sealing high‐asset manufactur‐ ing equipment, there is increasing demand for its security / tamper‐proof seal screws. OEMs transitioning to a smart factory are combining tradi‐ tional machinery with fragile sensors capable of capturing, storing, and transmitting troves of data for analysis. This data is a competitive advantage for OEMs; however, safeguarding the data captured on these tiny sensors is paramount as breaches to cybersecurity continue to escalate. To protect both industrial equipment and sensors, OEMs are investing in ZAGO security / tamper‐proof sealing screws, which perform a dual function: they seal contaminants from leaking into or out of machinery, and they contain a locking mechanism that is next to impossible to break or open without proper tooling.

// You must be able to produce faster, cheaper and in some cases, on-demand, without compromising quality or increasing production costs. //

ZAGO security / tamper‐proof sealing screws function like ZAGO sealing fasteners. They are engineered with a groove under the head of the fastener that when combined with a rubber O‐ring and tightened, creates a 360‐degree, air‐tight seal. This seal is impervious to contaminants, such as, water, moisture, oil, disinfectants, and dust, that may seep into and damage equipment while preventing contaminants from leak‐ ing out and harming the environment. ZAGO sealing fasteners are sustainable, reusable and inherently green. They are corro‐ sion and vibration‐resistant and can withstand extreme pres‐ sure, temperature and hazardous environments. “To be competitive, it’s no longer enough to manufacture a premium product,” says Gail Friedberg Rottenstrich, co‐ founder and CEO of ZAGO Manufacturing Co., a women‐owned business. “You must be able to produce faster, cheaper and in some cases, on‐demand, without compromising quality or increasing production costs. Digital transformation will help OEMs get there, but safeguarding equipment and data will always be paramount.” ZAGO Manufacturing Co. produces high‐tech sealing fasten‐ ers (sealing screws, bolts, nuts, washers) and switch seals for distributors, engineers, and OEMs worldwide. Based in the USA, ZAGO is headquartered in Newark, NJ, where it began 28 years ago. ZAGO sealing products are used in countless indus‐ tries: LiDAR, Electronics / Enclosures, Robotics / Drones, Mili‐ tary, Aerospace, Marine and others. ZAGO offers sealing fasteners that meet military specifications and pressure resis‐ tant to 1,500 psi. DFARS, REACH, DEKRA, RoHS compliant. www.zago.com

RAPID RIVETING FIXI, Jaton Riveting Products, Rivit, Rivetwise and Stanley Engineered Fastening form our rivet round-up…

Self-tapping inserts from FIXI Fixi is introducing the brand new catalogue for self‐tapping and special threaded inserts. Easy to install by manual or machine‐operated tools, FIXI self‐tapping and special threaded inserts enable high resis‐ tance fixings and money‐saving features. FIXI self‐tapping inserts are metal bushes with an internal and external thread. These inserts are designed with a cutting slot or cutting holes that allow the self‐tapping feature. Used in both hard materials (steel, stainless steel) and soft materials (light alloys, plastics, copper, cast iron, wood) and provide high performance mechanical fixings. Self‐tapping inserts are easy to install and can result in a reduction in thread size required saving material, reducing weight and costs. By using the self‐tapping inserts, the base material can be thinner and less expensive too. Self‐tapping inserts ensure a higher pull‐out force compared to the one given by pre‐tapping the receiving material. Self‐ tapping inserts achieve almost maximum pull‐out even with a reduced flange cover of the external thread. They are used for repairing damaged threads maintaining the

same dimensions of the fixings and resulting in a reinforced thread. FIXI is introducing a new range of special threaded inserts, the KN‐KNH series, with two or four locking keys that once installedlock the insert against the rotation due to torsion or vibration. The keys are placed in the proper seats by a punch or a hammer. Available in thin wall and heavy‐duty versions. Used to obtain high performance thread on light alloys, steel and cast iron or to repair worn thread. info@fixi.it

‘Riveting’ Extensions to JRP Range Jaton Riveting Products (JRP), the dedicated riveting brand from Owlett‐Jaton, has gone from strength‐to‐strength since its March 2020 launch. Building on this success, the range has been extended to include more of the most popular rivet types and sizes. The latest additions to the range see new lines added to the structural and specialist ranges, including bulb and hem struc‐ tural rivets and load spread with washer specialist rivets. In an exciting move, the wholesaler has also introduced a large range of black and white dome head rivets, as well as coloured multigrip rivets. Thirty‐two colours have been chosen based on their popularity in the UK, and all have a RAL or BS colour reference for riveting projects requiring a colour match. Coloured rivets have a wide variety of uses, and are suitable in industries such as cladding, signage, aerospace, automotive, construction and rail. JRP products are available for free next‐day delivery, with low minimum order levels, across the majority of the UK mainland. “It is almost twelve months since the launch of JRP and we have been overwhelmed by the response from the market,” explains Tony Williams, Sales Director at Owlett‐Jaton. “Customers have experienced huge success from stocking a

A NOTE OF COLOUR > RIVIT BLIND RIVETS Rivit is known in Italy as one of the leading companies in the production and distribution of fasteners and tools for sheet metal assembly and working. Blind rivets are a fastening system that allow for rapid and blind joints, working from one side of the workpiece only. This fastener is simple and rapid to install. In fact, the blind rivet is installed in just three phases: insertion into the hole, deforma‐ tion of the rivet body and breaking of the mandrel. Blind rivets come with different types of head: dome, countersunk or large. They are produced and distributed in various lengths, diameters, and of course in different materials: aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, stainless steel, cupro‐nickel, monel. Also, blind rivets can be made in all RAL table colours, to ensure a beautiful aesthetical result even when directly applied on painted surfaces, for applications needing a solid and aesthetically beautiful fastening. The most commonly used RAL colours are grey white (RAL9002), chocolate brown (RAL8017), moss green (RAL6005), oxide red (RAL3009), and colours such as antique copper, anthracite grey, copper‐coloured ideal for fastenings aluminum laminates. The copper body blind rivets can come with their mandrel in steel, brass or bronze, and they are an optimal solution for

fastenings on copper bodies. Cupronickel blind rivets (90% copper plus 10% nickel alloy) are widely used in roofing because they are more easily soldered in fastenings on stainless steel parts. For the installation of blind rivets, there are the specific Rivit riveting tools, which can be either hydropneumatic, cordless or hand ones. www.rivit.it

TORQUE FOCUS IT, SOFTWARE AND E-BUSINESS

TOOLED-UP ON TECH Torque Magazine rounds up IT, software and e-businesses with sales-i, OGL, Power Now and NiceLabel…

sales-i Joseph Cox, Business Development Manager at sales‐i discusses the impact of the Covid‐ 19 pandemic on the brands distribution business with Torque Magazine. “Much has been made of the damaging impact of the pandemic on the distribu‐ tion sector, but with workable vaccines and a published route out of lockdown now on the table, businesses are increas‐ ingly looking towards the future. One of the few positive effects of the crisis on distributors has been an increasing willing‐ ness to embrace technology solutions to help streamline their operations, maximise productivity and ultimately, do better business. With competition and price sensitivity in the market still high and margins ever tight on tooling and fastener transac‐ tions, operators are looking for any advantage to give them the edge, and sales enablement technology is coming increasingly to the fore as a simple yet powerful means of forging stronger customer relationships. A data driven sales strategy can be highly effective for distri‐

bution businesses, given the huge amounts of customer information they hold. Sales enable‐ ment software platforms like sales‐i give organisations full visibility of their customer relationships on a comprehen‐ sive range of metrics, making it possible to spot trends and identify opportunities to cross and upsell. The benefits are compelling – typically, we find that the average distribution business using the software can expect to enjoy an increase in total sales volume of as much as 20% or more, alongside increases in average invoice value and the number of spending customers. Fundamentally, our distribution customers tell us being better informed about their own customer behaviours, enables them to make better decisions about their overall sales strategies and move from reactive customer relationship management to more proactive sales. Of course, the Covid crisis is far from over and the early part of 2021 is likely to be characterised by continued uncertainty.” www.sales-i.com

OGL 2020 has presented merchants, wholesalers and distributors with a long list of challenges that have meant businesses have needed to adapt, diversify and re‐strategise to stay ahead of the competition, or sometimes to simply survive. This means busi‐ nesses, now more than ever, need to take full advantage of the technology solutions available to them to remain flexible and agile throughout 2021 and beyond. Continuing advancements in cloud computing, connectivity and artificial intelligence are all helping ERP systems to grow and improve. These ERP advancements help businesses provide an improved working environment where employees benefit from a better work life balance and feel empowered in their role to make smarter and quicker decisions. ERP systems and technology as a whole can be used by busi‐ nesses to create more efficient processes, more productive teams and more profitable operations, but the technology alone can not deliver on those promises. When implementing a new ERP system, it’s tempting to take existing processes and try to repli‐ cate them. This approach neglects the transformation that is required in company culture and core processes to fully utilise and optimise the investment. The resilience seen from customers at OGL Software can be attributed to the hardworking and dedicated team members who

have taken on extra responsibilities and have remained positive about change. This is why the outlook for ERP in 2021 and beyond relies on the expertise, commitment and success of the teams using them. In 2021 we’ll see those businesses who are thriving have invested in their people to ensure they are experts in the use of their ERP solutions, have the right tools and technology to effec‐ tively do their have the right tools and technology to effectively do their role, and are motivated to succeed. www.ogl.co.uk

NiceLabel NiceLabel, a leading global developer of label design software and label management systems, has launched a new version of its label management solutions portfolio: version, 2019.3. The new soft‐ ware update will enable organisations to use just a single platform for designing and printing labels, thereby saving them time and costs and streamlining their whole production process. The NiceLabel software previously offered out‐of‐the‐box label design, allowing business users to quickly and easily design and print labels. The new version builds on this capa‐ bility, enabling users, especially those working in factories or warehouses, to seamlessly design and print related supply chain documents, including delivery notes, pick lists, packing slips and invoices, from a single platform. The 2019.3 release of the NiceLabel software also features a connector to cloud‐based software from Workday. This is an example of a cloud‐to‐cloud integration that also supports cloud connected printers (IoT printing). Businesses that adopt this functionality can print driverless, completely eliminate their on‐ premise labelling footprint and save costs as a result. Their exist‐ ing Workday process remains the same, but they gain the benefits of streamlined label printing through NiceLabel Label Cloud. The release also includes enhancements to NiceLabel’s SAP advanced business application programming (ABAP) package including the ability to print supply chain documents more easily; and exporting data sources for streamlined design.

KNIPEX PreciStrip16 Wuppertal’s KNIPEX has launched the PreciStrip16, which quickly and precisely strips fine, flexible and solid cables. The capacity range extends from 0.08 to 16 mm² and the pliers can be easily adjusted with a dial for special materials or temper‐ ature requirements. Exact stripping of insu‐ lation is guaranteed thanks to parabolic stripping blades, while semi‐circular metal holding clamps ensure perfect grip. The high‐tech wire stripper has a huge range of applications: semi‐circular grooved holding clamps ensure good grip and hold practically any insu‐ lation material securely in place. Parabolic stripping blades separate insulation from both extremely fine‐stranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip it off backwards. A patented mechanism automatically regulates the incision depth of the stripping blades to suit the insulation thickness on the conductor within a large capacity range of 0.08 to 16

mm2; the neutral point of this mechanism can be precisely adjusted to account for specific conditions of use (such as specific insula‐ tion materials and temperatures). This zero correction allows the new wire strip‐ per to also strip insulation where tradi‐ tional automatic devices often fail. The automatic mechanism, which is fitted with a large dial with fine and tactile locking positions, increases the range of the KNIPEX PreciStrip16 so that it can handle particularly hard or soft materials. On top of this, it can also take specific temperature conditions into account. The PreciStrip16 also features a cable cutter on top, which reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16 mm² and solid conductors up to 6 mm². It has an adjustable length stop for accurate repetitive work. The PreciStrip16 also has a descrip‐ tion label so it can be personalised, meaning no more mix‐ups. www.knipex.com

“SAFETY IS KEY IN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS” When it comes to bridges, ensuring safety and minimising disruption during repairs has never been more important…

L

ike all forms of critical infrastructure, bridges are vital for any functioning society. They enable people to travel, goods to be transported and cities to grow and expand. Without them, we would be severely restricted and isolated by the natural environment. Their importance is such that some bridges have become internationally recognised landmarks that are synonymous with their home cities, for example, London, San Francisco and Sydney, just to name a few. As such, resilience is absolutely paramount to the design and construction of any bridge. It needs the ability to withstand and adapt to changing conditions and recover positively from shocks and stresses. Generations will be relying on it for decades – if not centuries – to come. The collapse of a bridge will not only cause an immediate humanitarian disaster but will potentially paralyse a whole region in its aftermath.

// Resilience is absolutely paramount to the design and construction of any bridge. //

PERFORMING ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE WHILE KEEPING A BRIDGE OPEN IN GERMANY Depending on the size and importance of the bridge, even a temporary shut‐down – for either repairs, maintenance, or a traffic accident – can cause significant delays and traffic jams. The Emmerich Rhine Bridge in Germany, which forms the main crossing over the river Rhine just a few kilometers from the Dutch border, is an example of such a bridge. Fondly nick‐ named the “Golden Gate of Rhine” due to the fact that it is the longest suspension bridge in Germany, its closure would cause motorists to take a detour of at least 50 kilometers. So, when a regular safety inspection in 2014 found that, among other things, bolts had come loose and the bridge had to be repaired, the top priority was to ensure that traffic could continue to flow. “This was the clear message from the regional road authority Landesbetrieb Strassenbau NRW,” remembers Henning Uphoff, a design engineer with the technical consultancy Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner, who were responsible for the project.

48

torque-expo.com

As a result, everything about the planning was based upon the requirement that one road lane in each direction should remain open. At the same time, the 200 vertical suspenders attached to the suspension cables with cable clamps made of cast iron, should progressively be taken down. But how can you take down up to 100 metre long suspenders weighing up to 1 ton without jeopardising safety? “It was almost like open‐heart surgery,” adds Uphoff. One major challenge was to replace the cable clamp bolts. Due to the enormous forces, there was no way to loosen the bolts with the suspenders attached to the main cables. Another potential problem was that of strong winds and heavy weather, which in the worst case could cause delays of several weeks with substantial financial implications. Marcel Vecchi, general manager with the building company R. Lange GmbH, came up with a solution. The company designed and built a roller conveyor adapted to the specifics of the bridge. With a diameter of 2.5 meters and a 180‐degree bend, it was placed at the upper part of the suspension cable. These main cables, which are attached to two 77‐meter‐high pylons, carry the whole bridge. Each cable consists of 61 separate cables, each with a diameter of five centimetres, forced together to form a hexagon. The big challenge was to avoid damaging the suspenders by overbending, so a minimum bending radius had to be observed. The existing suspenders were taken down and replaced with new suspenders using the roller conveyor and several winches. The bolts had to be substituted on the ground due to the weight of the clamps. Some of the original bolts were slightly bent, others were corroded and many had come loose.

NORD-LOCK WASHERS FOR STEEL CONSTRUCTION

These non‐galvanized HV sets were replaced with new bolts and Nord‐Lock Steel Construction washers, as specified in the tender. “This is a huge bridge with vibrations due to strong winds and traffic. So, with safety in mind, it was paramount to choose the safest option – the Nord‐Lock's SC washers,” says Vecchi. In contrast to traditional bolted connections – where there is contact between the parts that are connected – there needed to be a distance between the two halves of the cable clamps. This was necessary to ensure that the preload was applied to the cables and cable clamps. Each clamp was tightened with 12 to 28 bolts. Only half of the bolts were allowed to be removed at the same time to ensure that the clamps remained safely on the cable. “To guarantee safe and equal clamping, we made a plan for what bolt should be replaced in which order and how to preload them,” explains Vecchi. “We started with the even bolts, removed them, renewed corrosion protection, replaced them with new bolts and the new washers and then we continued in the same way with the odd ones. In the first step, the bolts were tightened manually. Then they were preloaded to 100% with more preload on the inner bolts than on the outer ones.” All in all, 2,200 bolts were replaced, with Nord‐Lock SC wash‐ ers guaranteeing the highest standards of safety. “Now we are safe for the next half‐century, at least,” says design engineer Henning Uphoff. www.nord-lock.com

Nord-Lock offers specific products for the most common structural bolt assemblies – regardless of whether it is a HR-, HV-, SB-Assembly or common ISO bolts. Nord-Lock’s washers have been rigorously tested and approved by independent institutes as well as certification authorities. Nord-Lock received its first technical approval in Germany in 2006. Since then, Nord-Lock has improved its technical documents by expanding their scope and simplifying their use. Nord-Lock has two European Technical Assessments for its product range: ETA-19/0813 and ETA-20/0010. Due to the harsh environmental factors and long life cycles experienced by the construction sector, the durability of washers is of particular importance. That is why Nord-Lock promises a Lifetime-Warranty and the highest corrosion resistance in the market. The washers are tested at least 1,000 hours in the Neutral Salt Spray Test.

ADVANTAGES Nord-Lock washers prevent loosening caused by vibration and dynamic loads and are quick and easy to install and remove using standard tools. They provide reliable locking, even for joints with short clamp length. The locking function is also not affected by lubrication. Suitable for high and low preload, Nord-Lock washers provide defined and uniform friction condition, which results in less deviation of achieved preload. They also have the same temperature characteristics as standard bolts and nuts. Nord-Lock washers can be reused, considering the right surfaces putted together.

INVESTED IN EFFICIENCY: OWLETT-JATON BOLSTERS OPERATIONS WITH NEW ORDER PICKERS The arrival of eight new advanced order pickers have boosted Owlett-Jaton’s warehouse operation and environmental efficiency…

I

n early November 2020, Owlett‐Jaton took delivery of an eight‐strong fleet of the latest generation ‘EKS 412’ Jungheinrich order pickers, from Germany. The new intake has increased the count to twenty order pickers within the 12,000 m² warehouse facility, contain‐ ing 25,000 pallets at the head office in Stone, Staffordshire. This significant investment in new machinery ties into Owlett‐Jaton’s drive to continually improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Initially, the new order pickers were to replace some of the existing machines, with the balance increasing the overall number within the facility. However, the decision has since being taken to keep all of the existing machinery for the foresee‐ able future – a reflection of how the busi‐ ness is doing. The Jungheinrich EKS 412s are techno‐ logically advanced, out‐performing previ‐ ous iterations. They are equipped with the up‐to‐date lithium‐ion powered batteries, offering optimum picking performance, whilst demonstrating impressive energy efficiency. The batteries take less time to charge, making them noticeably more effi‐ cient, while holding double the power and performance than before. The machines offer optimal ergonomics for use in wide aisles, all‐round visibility (thanks to the new mast and side viewing windows in the cab), along with high stability; all help‐ ing toward Health and Safety in the work‐ place, too. Late 2019 saw Owlett‐Jaton being the first and only wholesaler in their industry in the UK to achieve the internationally recognised ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System. The advantages of certification were recognised at an early stage. Living in a global society that is increasingly concerned with the environmental impact caused by industry, the ISO 14001:2015 certification demonstrates

50

torque-expo.com

Twenty order pickers now roam Owlett-Jaton’s 12,000m2 warehouse in Stone

that Owlett‐Jaton takes the matter seri‐ ously and actively wants to improve. This in turn gives its customers peace of mind that they go above and beyond with regards to sourcing and supplying responsibly. Indeed, today many compa‐ nies and manufacturers now require their supply chain to have specific envi‐ ronmental management plans. Accredita‐ tion shows that its customer’s supplier is a responsible company, which increases credibility, and helps towards winning new customers. Since attaining the certification, Owlett‐ Jaton has taken several steps to further improve its impact on the environment, and the new order pickers are no excep‐ tion to this. Taking less power to charge measurably improves the carbon foot‐

print. The new lithium‐ion batteries emit no gases during charging and are more environmentally friendly in comparison with conventional lead‐acid batteries. The business said: “When a company has the logistic statistics such as Owlett‐ Jaton, receiving, as well as picking and processing over a hundred tons of goods every day, and operating 24 hours a day Monday to Friday, the new order pickers are an absolute necessity. But just how good are these new Jungheinrich EKS 412s? Well, if you stood in the warehouse and heard the bell ring at the beginning of every shift, you would hear warehouse staff deciding who will be ‘the lucky ones’, this time!” www.owlett-jaton.com

CHINA INVESTS BIG IN CIVIL AVIATION INFRASTRUCTURE OVER 2016 – 2020 China has been enhancing its civil aviation infrastructure sector over the past five years, with big investment and signif‐ icant progress achieved, according to the country’s civil avia‐ tion authorities. During the 13th Five‐Year Plan period (2016‐2020), a total investment of 460.8 billion yuan (about US$71.2 billion) was injected into the sector, according to data from the Civil Avia‐ tion Administration of China (CAAC). China positioned the civil aviation industry as an important strategic industry for the country’s socio‐economic development. Significant progress has been made in the scale and speed of construction as well as the volume of investment in airports, which represent the key infrastructure of the civil aviation industry, the CAAC said.

As of the end of 2020, China’s total number of certified civil transport airports and general airports reached 241 and 313, respectively.

XINJIANG’S BORDER PORT SEES RECORD CHINA-EUROPE FREIGHT TRAINS IN 2020 The number of China‐Europe freight trains travelling via Horgos Port in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reached a record high of 4,722 last year, local customs said on 19 January 2021. The volume of goods transported through the port in 2020 reached 3.68 million tonnes, which is worth a total of nearly US$ 26.44 billion, both setting new records, according to the port on the China‐Kazakhstan border.

GM DELIVERS 2.9 MILLION VEHICLES IN CHINA IN 2020 General Motors (GM) and its joint ventures delivered 2.9 million vehicles in China in 2020, with a year‐on‐year sales increase of 14.1% in Q4, GM China said on 6 January 2021. Although the COVID‐19 epidemic impacted sales in the first quarter of 2020, they started to recover in Q2. Deliver‐ ies then posted a strong rebound in the second half, espe‐ cially for SUVs, MPVs and luxury vehicles, the company said. Last year, GM’s Cadillac sales hit a record high of over 230,000 vehicles, increasing by 7.9% year‐on‐year. Chevrolet delivered nearly 291,000 automobiles, and Buick and Wuling sales increased by 4.1% and 8.8%, respectively, in 2020.

Despite the impact of the COVID‐19 outbreak, the port expanded its routes from 16 to 21 in 2020 and cut down customs clearance time. The port has been increasingly favoured by westward trains due to its geographical proximity to major Central Asian and European cities as well as local government support and convenient custom clearance policies, said Tang Chentao, manager of a local logistics company.

“We expect China’s vehicle market to continue growing in the long term and have a positive outlook on 2021,” said Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China. The company announced that more than 40% of its new launches in China would be new energy vehi‐ cles in the next five years. www.ChinaFastener.com

WOOD, CHIPBOARD + DECKING SCREWS Optimaxx Stainless Steel Decking Screws Wood screw brand Optimaxx has announced the release of its new extreme performance Decking Screws. As decking season swings into action, Optimaxx is proud to announce its expanding line of wood screws with the release of its latest Stainless Steel Decking Screws. Optimaxx is recognised by many as one of the highest performing range of wood screws in the market, incorporating some of the best features that have been developed over many decades. Now Optimaxx has developed its decking solutions to better serve customers who are active in decking developments. The Optimaxx Stainless Steel Decking Screws are the latest addition to its decking screw range. Designed to work specifi‐ cally for composite decking, these screws feature a range of application benefits, including serrations on the lower thread to enable quick and safe fastening. They include a non‐ threaded shank to allow two materials to be pulled tightly together while the upper thread locks the deck board securely. Additionally, the cylindrical head is designed for fixing into the groove of the deck board, ensuring a secure fit. Quality Decking installations demand not only that weather‐ resistant materials are used but also the right fixing. The new Optimaxx Stainless decking complements not only composite but hardwood and treated timber decking ensuring the completed deck stands the test of our changing seasons and time.

Owlett-Jaton > Exterior Woodscrews that Make the Grade With spring around the corner, many people start to think about completing outdoor projects. Small scale construction, garden renovations and outdoor maintenance generally gather pace when the warmer weather arrives. But it is imperative that the correct fixing is used, to protect into the winter months. Not all screws are manufactured for external use, and an exte‐ rior grade woodscrew is better suited for outdoor woodwork projects. A rusty or corroded screw can become weak and fatigued, making it more likely to break and inevitably cause problems. Owlett‐Jaton supplies a range of external grade wood‐ screws, which have been designed to withstand extreme weather and provide a strong and durable fixing. Whilst stainless steel woodscrews are suitable for outdoor applications, they can be costly. Owlett‐Jaton supply ranges that have been specifically manufactured for external applications. The Vortex® exterior high‐performance power screw offers exceptional performance when used externally. The same tech‐

nologically advanced screw as the standard Vortex, but with a Magsho Silver organic coating designed to offer superior resistance to corrosion. These screws are rated at 1,000‐hour salt spray test and are also ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quater‐ nary) timber resistant. Designed to resist corrosion, the Unifix decking screws are manufactured with a green organic coating which provides for greater weather resistance, making them an ideal choice for fixing deck boards to timber joists. Utilising the same corrosion‐resistant coating as the decking screws, the Timberdrive range is a popular choice for heavy‐ duty timber fixings. An exceptional screw for outdoor fixing, its heat‐treated shank offers additional strength. www.owlett-jaton.com

Hafren fasteners twin thread security woodscrews Designed for use in wood, Hafren security woodscrews are manufactured in hardened steel and zinc plated for protection against corrosion. These security woodscrews are created for use both internally and externally. Hafren wood screws have two threads running along the body of the screw and can be used for softwood or hardwood eg, oak, mahogany, etc. The twin threads allow screws to be installed/removed twice as fast as a regular single thread screw. Hafren offer two types of tamper resistant woodscrews from stock which can be purchased from any approved Hafren Fastener stockist. Clutch Head Twinthread Woodscrews: are 1‐way (permanent fixings). These security wood screws are easy to install with a standard slotted screwdriver. They cannot be driven anti‐clock‐ wise due to the drive profile, making them extremely difficult to remove once installed. Sentinel® Twinthread Woodscrews: are 1‐Way (permanent fixings). The Sentinel® Woodscrews are installed with a Pozi screwdriver offering greater engagement, improved torque and less chance of cam‐out meaning easier / faster installation. The unique design of the drive renders them permanent and extremely difficult to remove once installed. As well as Hafren’s specially designed twinthread wood‐ screws, some of the self‐tapping security screws, such as the 6‐ Lobe Pin & Pin Hex varieties are regularly used as woodscrews.

Hafren also stocks 5‐Lobe Pin self‐tappers in A4‐70 stainless steel offering improved corrosion resistance. Whilst this higher‐ grade steel is generally more expensive than A2 Stainless Steel fasteners, it can be more cost‐effective over a longer period of time due to its corrosion resistance and durability, leading to reduced maintenance costs, fewer replacement parts and less down time due to equipment breakdown. It will also remain clean and bright under atmospheric conditions. Hafren have an extensive range of woodscrew sizes available off the shelf in zinc plated steel, with other nonstandard sizes and styles available to order using the company’s service. Hafren Security Fasteners are only available through approved distributors throughout the United Kingdom and worldwide. THE PROPERTIES OF AN ORIGINAL SPAX INCLUDE > T-STAR plus force application > Guarantees an even firmer hold and better SPAX guidance. For optimal force transmis‐ sion, even when working overhead.

The MULTI head > The innovative pocket segments help with every application. On wood, they have a milling effect, and on metal, they function like a brake to prevent over‐tightening. The corrugated profile > The unique cut of the thread all the way to the point ensures rapid, safe fastening and effortlessly pulls the screw into the wood. The 4CUT > The point significantly reduces wood splitting and pre‐drilling is made unnecessary for most wood types. The moment the screw bites is also effectively reduced. The cutter on the thread run‐out expands the wood even more and the thinner shank no longer produces friction. This keeps the torque low and saves energy, leading to more fastening with a single battery charge.

A Perry As 2021 brings the same challenges as 2020 in response to Covid‐19, there has never been such a surge in demand in the sector for home renovations and construction. Having the right kit in the toolbox is critical and thanks to A. Perry, there is a screw for every construction project in the garden thanks to a wide product range for 2021. With its award‐winning patented TENZ Stairs Thread Technol‐ ogy, TENZ FROM PERRY had been in development for over a year and since its launch to market six months ago has fast become its most sought after screw in the firm’s 95 years of trading. Developed for projects demanding the highest of standards, the key point of difference between conventional wood screws and the new TENZ wood screw is the revolutionary new thread design. TENZ reduces the friction along the thread making work more efficient. The wood fibres are gently displaced and not drilled or milled which uses less energy force thanks to the oscil‐ lating screw. With significantly less effort required, the reduc‐ tion in energy used allows for more screws to be driven in with just one charge of the battery. DeckingScrews from A. Perry is another high performance screw in the range designed for ease and speed when used with a suitable power tool. As the season dawns on the industry when people look to replace decking or create new decking in their garden, the new and improved rapid type 17 point gives quick penetration into some of the hardest, most durable woods used. It also has the ability to self‐clean wood swarf. Completing the trio of wood screws on offer and providing a

complete choice of heavy duty timber fixings to complete any construction job is the No 6016 TimberScrew. Boasting a high performance fixing, this TimberScrew can be used on beams, rafters, stairs, joists, fencing, wooden walls and more giving peace of mind for the strongest of bonds and the option of five difference screw lengths. Whatever screw choosen for the job in hand, both the Deck‐ ingScrew and TimberScrew are weather protected having undergone 1,000 hours of salt spray testing. Each also boasts sharp angle thread for screwing efficiency and double angle head to ensure self‐countersinking which prevents exposing harsh corners. www.perrytrade.co.uk/tenz-from-perry

2 DECADES OF

JCP FIXINGS JCP Fixings, the specialist fixings division of Owlett-Jaton, is now one of the UK’s largest fixings brands. Impressively, it has achieved this position in a demanding market in just 20 years and up against brands that have had (at least) a good few decades’ head start. So, how did it make its way into the top ranks of the fixings game? Torque Magazine digs deeper…

B

ack in 2001, Owlett‐Jaton was already recognised as one of the UK’s largest fixings suppliers, but it did not offer its own brand. JCP – Jaton Construction Products – was launched to address that, giving Owlett‐Jaton its own fixings brand. Since then, JCP has grown in stature, including an ever‐increasing range of high‐quality products and pack‐ aging options, all built on reputation. Keeping up with the ever‐changing demands of the construc‐ tion industry is something which JCP prides itself on. “It is a broad spectrum from which changes are generated; from legislation, through to consumer expectations,” says JCP Fixings General Manager Nick Beardon, who joined the company in 2003. “Regulations and standards in the construc‐ tion industry are by no means set in stone – they (rightly) adapt over time. For example, we have seen a rise in demand for certi‐ fied products from distributors, architects, engineers, and spec‐ ifiers alike, who recognise the overall advantages of specifying certified products. Consumer buying needs continually change too, for example, improved packaging for the consumer. “Any form of change – irrespective of origin, inevitably has an impact on the supply chain; identifying, responding, and adapting appropriately to change is a fundamental element of our survival, and indeed, success.” It hardly needs saying that in the construction industry it is imperative that the right product is used first time, every time; inexpensive and inferior alternatives can be potentially danger‐ ous, and almost inevitably result in avoidable complications (and ultimately cost) at some stage, or another. Since its inception, JCP has only offered a range of high‐quality products, often certified and regulated, including CE approved, ETA Certified, WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) and Fire Resistance prod‐ ucts. Over the 20 years the product range has grown year‐on‐ year and this is a trend that is set to continue; on that note, the new 2021 JCP Fixings catalogue will be landing on desks from mid‐February and will include even more items than ever before. JCP now offer ‘trade’ and ‘retail’ bags, branded with the JCP Fixings logo and livery. Split into four categories (medium‐ duty, heavy‐duty, nylon and cavity, and self‐drilling screws) each product is clearly colour coded. The label also shows base material icons for which the product is recommended, clear instructions for installation, along with extended technical

details ensuring the application is correct; the packaging also includes a QR code that takes you through to the relevant Tech‐ nical data sheet on the JCP Fixings website. “This is a great example of where we responded to a change in the market,” explains Beardon. “Today’s society has higher expectations regarding the retail environment, and coinciding with this, the quality of packaging. The result? An improved retail experience, where the branded packaging is striking, regimental in appearance, and much more inviting. It is even easier for customers to find what they want, and the clear instructions help consumers choose the right product; all of this often leads to an increase in sales for our customers, and ultimately, us too”.

// Today’s society has higher expectations regarding the retail environment, and coinciding with this, the quality of packaging. // TECHNICAL FOUNDATIONS > SUPPORT, PRODUCT TESTING AND TRAINING As noted earlier, the high stakes of the construction industry mean it is vital that the right product is used first time, so knowledge and technical support has been a cornerstone of JCP, which offers numerous forms of service, including an in‐ depth technical website, onsite product testing, training session opportunities and ECAP Membership. The JCP website was originally launched seven years after the brand was set up and offered technical datasheets. Since then, it has gained increased importance. In 2013, it was redesigned and interactive software was introduced for the first time. The website has continued to be updated and deliver the most up‐to‐date information, keeping in line with changes in the product offering, legislation, and market demands. Prod‐ uct information, load and range data, performance data sheets, installation instructions, base material guidance, are just some of the options available.

Quality products, including ETA Certified ranges, have been a JCP staple since inception

The JCP website has been developed with the distributor, architect, engineer and specifier in mind, and includes the Anchor Calculation Program (ACP), which is designed to simplify specifying connections to floors, ceilings, and walls, and factors in loadings, spacing, and edge distances. The programs are updated regularly to ensure they are compliant with any changes in legislation or industry standards and is available free of charge for anyone to download. Where required, JCP offers onsite product testing by their highly experienced Area Sales Managers, right across the UK. Beardon explains: “There has been a shift in the construction industry, whereby we have seen an increase in such requests. Whether it is in line with a building regulation requirement, or for peace of mind, our Area Sales Managers provide advice on behalf of our customers. We are visiting sites on an almost daily basis performing testing to demonstrate the suitability of our products”. The JCP Fixings technical support team also provides troubleshooting technical back up when required. The technical department offers training sessions for distributors, project managers, and designers, at JCP’s dedicated training centre. With three levels of training to choose from, they can all be tailored to meet the needs of the audience. The training provides an opportunity for people to get a hands-on-experience with products from the JCP Fixings range. JCP is also in the forefront of the vital area of legislation and standards, thanks to its membership of ECAP (European Consortium of Anchor Producers). ECAP is a group of European producers, where the members influence the standardisation

JCP's 2021 Fixings Catalogue has been developed and refined over the firm's 20 years

of their products. This helps to ensure that their own technical needs are considered and secured in European Standardisation and Technical Assessments, as well as enhance the technical development of their products. FIXED ON THE FUTURE 2020 has proven that predictions don’t always come true, and while JCP cannot say for sure where it will be in another 20 years, it is certain to remain fully committed to its customers. As technologies and innovation continue to improve, JCP will be at the forefront of ensuring that the ‘right’ products are sourced and supplied, it says. The website will be continually monitored to offer visitors the most up-to-date technical information, as well as being developed to offer even more support. JCP Fixings staff will still be providing the best level of support possible; indeed, they have a new Technical Manager – Reza Jafari, who replaces Brian Deluce, who recently retired after having joined JCP in September of the same year it was launched. Jafari has a degree in Structural Engineering from the Milan Polytechnic and qualified as a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. Jafari’s technical knowledge, coupled with having previously worked with design engineers, brings a new level of expertise to the Technical department. And if he continues in the footsteps of Brian Deluce, he will be there to enjoy celebrating JCP Fixings reaching the big ‘4’ ‘0’. www.jcpfixings.co.uk

OPINION POWER TOOLS

CUT THE CORD >

THE BENEFITS OF GOING CORDLESS Writing for Torque Magazine, Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK, explains the key features and technology of the latest cordless power tools and how these help distributors to meet the needs of their customers…

// Choosing a brand that has a wide range of tools that use the same batteries can be a significant advantage. //

Tools featuring brushless motors offer reduced fatigue for users too

C

ordless tools have become the product of choice for many customers and for a range of applications due to the benefits they offer. Cordless tools allow users to work safer, quicker and more flexibly. By removing the need to carry transformers or locate a power source and get that power to the work area, cordless reduces the amount of set up time. Also, if not managed correctly, the cables can become a trip hazard so this risk is eliminated with battery powered tools along with the time required to plan and manage the safe placement of the cables. There was traditionally a trade‐off with cordless tools as they were generally less powerful than petrol or corded alter‐ natives. However, advances in battery and motor technology in recent years has meant that these tools now offer compa‐ rable power and performance, with a growing number being suitable for high‐demand applications. One of the key innovations has been brushless motors. Due to their design, brushless motors do not create friction, limit‐ ing wear and tear and reducing the energy wasted through heat production. As a result, they have greater efficiency and produce more torque per weight. This means that less power is required to achieve the same result and extends run times by up to 50% on each battery charge. Brushless motors also have reduced maintenance requirements, saving time and on‐ going expenditure.

All Makita cordless power tools are driven by one of three battery platforms

Tools that feature brushless motors can also be lighter and more compact compared with their brushed motor equivalents. This can make a significant difference to those operating the machines as they will be more comfortable to use and muscle fatigue will be reduced. Another factor that is worth advising customers on when they are investing in new tools is the battery platform. Choosing a brand that has a wide range of tools that use the same batteries can be a significant advantage. It improves the user’s productivity as it is easy to swap batteries between various tools as required. It also simplifies the equipment needed on site as one type of battery and charger can be used. It also makes buying new tools simpler with customers invested into one family system of tools. For example, all Makita cordless power tools are driven by one of three battery platforms: the 12VMax CXT, 18V LXT or 40VMax XGT. The LXT batteries can be used on more than 270 different products, including the Twin 18V machines that use any two LXT batteries to produce 36V power, representing huge sales poten‐ tial for distributors. For distributors, understanding the benefits of the latest cord‐ less tools is important. By helping customers to choose the right products on a versatile battery platform can help them work more efficiently and use their capital more effectively. DUOSEAL – SECURE FASTENINGS WHILE RELIABLY DRILLING HOLES IN WET AREAS The DuoSeal plug is also among fischer’s product launches. Together with the accompanying stainless‐steel screw, the DuoSeal guarantees watertightness in accordance with ETAG 022 and the DIN 18534 standard up to the W3‐I water expo‐ sure class (for the German market the DuoSeal is only recom‐ mended up to water exposure class W1‐I). The plug is also suitable for tiled surfaces and can be securely installed in solid, perforated and panel construction materials. DIGITAL FISCHER SERVICES FOR TRADESPEOPLE And it’s not just new products; fischer has been hard at work developing new digital services for tradespeople on the construction site. The fischer Professional App provides access to information and advice on fischer’s fixing technology from anywhere, at any time. Offering a product advisor (and options to complete a purchase online or in‐store with an associated retailer), users can intuitively find any information needed on the world of fischer fixings and even chat directly with application engineers. Tradespeople effectively get a mobile fixings consultant with them at all times on site and can manage fixings tasks through their smartphone. The new installation protocol function within the fischer Professional App makes it faster and easier to correctly document fastenings with just one touch. The free and practical tool allows post‐installed rebar connections and all other fastenings to be captured digitally before being sent via PDF function. This signif‐ icantly increases the level of safety and efficiency when docu‐ menting fastenings compared to manually filling in protocols.

fischer has significantly upgraded its digital support for those on-site Users must register for a myfischer account in order to access the installation protocol function, which is easy to do through the app. Data that has been entered can be synchro‐ nised across various devices. Speaking of the myfischer portal, the brand has been dili‐ gently pooling everything worth knowing about products, services, deliveries and much more in the revamped myfischer portal, available free of charge. The password‐protected area of the fischer website is available after successfully registering target group‐specific information and provides essential day‐ to‐day information, says fischer. It ranges from individual content to the Fixperience design software and additional services, available 24/7. fischer is also providing its customers with additional digital contact and order options through the portal. The user‐friendly self‐service allows the company’s partners to work with fischer in an even more efficient, flexible and time‐saving manner, says the group. What’s more, the fischer Fixperience design software also helps tradespeople plan fastening solutions for entire projects and individual applications in a targeted and cost‐ optimised manner. fischer also offers BIM services such as digital twins of rele‐ vant products and predefined smart components as well as custom BIM engineering solutions and services. REALISTIC ANCHOR DESIGNS IN CONCRETE AT BAU ONLINE BAU was online this year and saw fischer introduce an inno‐ vative design method: The non‐linear spring model, which allows the resistance of anchor groups to be calculated realis‐ tically based on individual anchors within a group while taking into account the base plate geometry and anchor layout as well as the existing stiffness of base plates and individual anchors. The approach therefore goes beyond the limits of the previ‐ ous concrete capacity method (CC‐method) on the design of tension loaded fastenings in concrete, says fischer. The perfor‐ mance‐based concept allows the realistic force distribution between the group anchors and the displacement of the base plate to be taken into account. This enables a better assess‐ ment of the overall system than calculations based solely on load‐bearing capacity. There’s more on all those announcements and products on fischers website. www.fischer.group

any industries rely on the multi‐ functional properties of coatings with lamellar zinc particles when it comes to the optimal coating of their fasteners. Zinc flake systems provide high and durable corrosion protection with an attractive appearance with a very low coating thickness. Lubricants that are generally integrated into the top coat allow a controlled ability to control friction when applied to two base coat layers as part of standard coating sequences. “A two base coat layer system with incorporated lubricant significantly increases production capacity” Atotech’s solvent‐based Zintek® 200 SL F base coat features an incorporated lubri‐ cant. By eliminating the need for a top coat, this cost‐effective system provides excel‐ lent adhesion, highest corrosion protection and precise friction coefficient properties in a centered CoF range of 0.12 to 0.18 with only two base coat layers. At the same time, the system shows no stick‐slip effect, which is a problem with several alternative solu‐ tions available on the market. The elimina‐ tion of the top coat application leads to a higher throughput (up to 30%) and thus significantly increases the capacity of the dip‐spin coating system. Pre-eminent cathodic corrosion protection Besides its excellent adhesion and friction properties, Zintek 200 SL F boasts excel‐ lent cathodic corrosion protection proper‐ ties. Many OEM standards require that a coating must exhibit corrosion resistance for at least 600 hours in neutral salt spray tests with no evidence of base metal corro‐

64

sion. Zintek 200 SL F lasts for more than 1,000 hours, far exceeding standard OEM requirements. These outstanding corro‐ sion protection properties also apply to complex part geometries, and Zintek 200 SL F shows high corrosion resistance (720 hours) when subjected to stone chipping.

// By eliminating the need for a top coat, this cost-effective system provides excellent adhesion and high corrosion protection. // Less sensitivity against humidity Another crucial requirement of solvent‐ based coatings is humidity stability. High sensitivity to humidity can lead to devia‐ tions in friction behaviour and corrosion

protection, as well as severe paint destruc‐ tion within the tank during lead times. Unlike other comparable products in the market claiming to possess commensurate properties but showing inconsistent CoF behavior after being exposed to humidity, Zintek 200 SL F, a reliable, production‐ proven process, clearly exhibits less sensi‐ tivity against humidity, leading to a prolonged lifetime for the ready‐to‐use paint inside the dip spin tank. In addition, Zintek 200 SL F requires a curing temperature of just 230°C. This moderate curing temperature does not weaken the hardened steel structures typi‐ cally found in modern fasteners. This char‐ acteristic makes Zintek 200 SL F perfectly suitable for application on safety‐labelled parts for the automotive industry. Due to its economic benefits as a two‐ coat system, its effective corrosion protec‐ tion, high bath stability, and reliable controlled friction properties – all outstanding features – Zintek 200 SL F has claimed accreditation and approval from two major French automotive OEMs.” www.atotech.com

OPINION ENGINEERING’S PERCEPTION PROBLEM

The real reason female engineers are still a rarity Engineering in the UK has an image problem and change is needed if the sector doesn’t want to miss out on talented women and men, argues Diane Boon, Commercial Operation Director at Cleveland Bridge. And while this article focuses on the engineering sector in general, there are arguably lessons for more specific industries, like the fastener trade…

T

No question of ability, but of desirability When it comes to addressing the lack of female engineers, often we will hear phrases such as “it’s because girls are brought up to believe they can’t do maths!” or “it’s because we treat engineering as a ‘man’s job’”. This might have been true many decades ago, but in the modern day, it’s been quite some time since such strong gender biases were in play at an educational level. There is still work to be done, of course, but the idea of an entire sector being cordoned off as “careers for men” and “careers for women” has long since been kicked to the curb. Indeed, our female students are under no illusions – engineering is, as far as they are concerned, as valid an option for them as it is for their male classmates. Research by EngineeringUK highlighted this perception from 2015 to 2019: As the graph shows, girls do not believe engineering is “just for boys”. In fact, the perception is only increasing, with 94% of girls at school leaving age (16–19) in 2019 saying they agreed that engineering is suitable for boys and girls. 81% of boys at school leaving age in 2019 agreed too. It’s not that girls don’t think they can be engi‐ neers, then. A perception of ability is not the prob‐ lem. A perception of engineering as a desirable Perceptions of engineering by females in the UK, (2019) career, however, is certainly in play. 100% And it’s getting worse. 90% 80% The perception of engineering as a desirable 70% career path is dropping among 11‐14 year old girls 60% and 16‐19 year old girls in particular. This could be 50% cited as proof that more needs to be done to break 40% 30% down barriers and build up role models for potential 20% female engineers in order to make the career path 10% look more attainable and aspirational for women. 0% However, it’s important to note that boys are not Engineering is Do you think you would How positive or negative How desirable do you suitable for both ever consider a career believe a career in is your view of much more enthralled by the idea of becoming boys and girls in engineering? engineering to be? engineering? engineers either, with a slight decrease also Age 11-14 Age 14-16 Age 16-19 present in the last four years.

% of responses which were positive

here’s no denying that there is a gender imbalance when it comes to engineering. In the UK, only 12% of engi‐ neers are female. A quick Google search on the matter will bring up countless articles busting myths about STEM subjects being a man’s domain (even though female students often outperform their male classmates in these subjects). More often than not, such reports point at a seemingly endless number of barriers presented to women who would otherwise become engineers – a lack of role models, sexism in the work‐ place, a concern over progression prospects. Of course, these are all valid obstacles. But there’s a greater issue impacting British engineering in general, and a lack of female engineers is a symptom of a greater problem within the sector. After all, if it were simply a case of engineering in general throwing up obstacles for women, why does Spain have a relatively even number of male and female engineers? What if it’s not simply a case of engineering shutting its doors on a pool of potential talent? What if people – men and women alike – just aren’t knocking at the door of British engineering?

66

torque-expo.com

There is certainly a case to be made for the damaging effects of gender stereotypes, but clearly, girls are confident that they are equally capable to pursue engineering as a career – if they wanted to. EngineeringUK surmised that: “Barriers to pursu‐ ing STEM education and engineering careers – those relating to a lack of knowledge of engineering, for example – may be common to both genders and point to the importance of step‐ ping up engagement with all young people.” Engineering in the UK, it seems, is simply not showcasing itself as a desirable career path to either genders, and the impact of this is simply showing more in a lack of female engi‐ neers due to the residual remnants of gendered stereotypes amplifying the overall problem. But why is engineering not appealing to men or women? Engineering is appealing – the UK is selling it short As previously mentioned, this is not a global problem. The UK ranks as the lowest in Europe when it comes to female repre‐ sentation in its engineering workforce. According to civil engineer Jessica Green, the issue is certainly on a national scale. In the UK, engineering simply isn’t presented with any of the glamour or prestige that parallel occupations, such as architecture, is afforded. In fact, Green admits she herself “turned [her] nose up at engineering”, believing that to go down that route would mean spending her career “dressed in overalls working in tunnels”. That, she points out, is the concept of engineering that the UK pushes out. Despite the years of academic study and on‐the‐job training that many engineering roles require, for some reason, engi‐ neering is denied its rightful sense of achievement and prestige. Meanwhile, as Green points out, being able to call yourself an engineer in Spain is certainly held in high regard. One cannot call themselves an engineer at all without going

through a difficult six‐year university process, after which the title of “engineer” is awarded. It is held in the same regard as becoming a doctor. It’s little wonder then that Spain enjoys a relatively even number of male and female engineers. Meanwhile, in the UK, the word “engineer” is used far more loosely. Not only that, but there’s a sense of ambiguity in the UK regarding what an engineer is. A lack of representation compared to other prestigious roles, such as doctors or lawyers, means that many people simply think of overalls and hard hats when it comes to engineers – despite the fact that plenty of engi‐ neers work in office environments or in a digital field. The solution: establish the prestige It is clear that engineering as a whole needs to rebrand itself in the UK, and not just for women. Female students in the UK are perfectly confident in their ability to become engineers – instead of a feeling that they need to prove themselves to the engineering sector, it is in fact the engineering sector that needs to prove itself to potential employees. Diane Boon, Director of Commercial Operations at structural steelwork company Cleveland Bridge, states: “To be a woman in engineering – as with everything in life – you need to work hard. But so do the men. Being a woman has neither helped nor hindered my career in this incredible field. What engineering needs to do smarter is raise its profile, make itself more appealing to future generations – it needs to reposition itself.” By building up the prestige of engineering and holding it in the same high regard as our European neighbours, the UK engineering workforce would no doubt begin to see a much stronger and swifter change in terms of gender representation within engineering. www.clevelandbridge.com

POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES ENSURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), looks at the logistical challenges for suppliers and retailers in H1 2021...

T

he start of 2021 has seen a mixed picture in terms of economic indicators, reflecting the positive and negative effects of a third extended lockdown on this sector. More‐ over, for the first time in a while, we have other significant influ‐ ences on the commercial landscape alongside Covid‐19. Now we are also dealing with Brexit fallout – and the soaring costs of Far East freight. Overall measures show the recovery from the first Covid‐19 lockdown slowing in November with GDP in decline, and retail volumes dipping year‐on‐year in December. The latest lockdown is also checking the wider recovery, not least by piling more strain on 'non‐essential' retailers and service providers. Even with many still furloughed, the number of payroll employees has fallen by 828,000 since this time last year. On the flipside, with people again largely restricted to their homes, spending on anything to do with DIY and home improvement – including tools and fixings – has remained strong, especially with hardware retailers now deemed essen‐ tial, and both the consumer and professional end user getting more and more comfortable with purchasing home improve‐ ment products from the online alternatives. Indeed, non‐store retailers in this sector reported the largest year‐on‐year growth ever – at 43.5% in December. Equally positive for tools and fixings are the latest figures from the construction industry. UK average house prices increased by 7.6% over the year to November, up from 5.9% in October, to stand at a record high of £250,000. This is the highest annual growth rate the UK has seen since June 2016. Construction output grew by 1.9% in the month‐on‐month all work series in Novem‐ ber, because of a 3.5% increase in new work that more than offset the 0.6% fall in professionally‐sourced repair and maintenance. So, for those in a position to sell and supply product, the commer‐ cial consequences of the pandemic still include many positives.

68

torque-expo.com

Let us turn therefore to Brexit and the perhaps even more worrying impact of the incredible price rises for Far East freight. The combined effect of these two sources of market disruption ‐ on top of Covid‐19 – is certainly not helping the Purchasing Managers Index which showed the slowest growth in factory activity since June 2020. In fact, it fell to 52.9 in January from 57.5 in December, well below market forecasts of 54. Lockdown restrictions, lower levels of new orders, reduced employment and a swift depletion of pre‐production inventories were the main factors. Commodity prices also surged in December, with energy commodities spiking 15% and non‐energy commodities jumping 4.7%. All sub‐indexes raised, led by metal and minerals (10.4%) and base metals (7.2%). We can expect this same combination of factors to create logis‐ tical challenges for suppliers and retailers throughout the first half of 2021. Just because of Brexit, securing import and export at affordable freight and duty rates will take time. While the zero‐ tariff deal is welcome, there is considerable red tape to be faced, whether that is paying import VAT and customs duties for selling into the EU, changes to rules of origin, or different trading terms for Northern Ireland. There are numerous grace periods still being negotiated, all of which are bound to have repercussions. Add to that the wide dispersal of containers resulting from the pandemic, the pressures on online demand and the relatively small number of companies able to provide a service in this area and the challenge is obvious. The new lure of British manufacture as well as British design is certainly back on many agendas. As with Covid‐19, the key is information and the ability to adapt. For BHETA, it is all about a) providing members with up to the minute facts, b) helping adaptability with ‘how‐to’ content and c) enabling networking opportunities with retailers and export destinations. Equally, it is about ensuring that other chal‐ lenges – such as the sale of bladed items, packaging tax and sustainability in general – are kept on the industry – and if necessary, lobbying agenda. It is obvious that the ability to sell – online, bricks and mortar, ideally both – is key and that of equal importance is the ability to get the product into the hands of the ultimate purchaser in a timely, convenient fashion. That means looking to marketing and to operations, as well as to sales and routes to market. It will also mean lobbying to ensure that the voice of the DIY and home improvement industry – one of only two retail sectors currently in growth – the other being food – is heard at the highest level. BHETA is doing everything it can to help in all these areas. For further information, contact: Nicola Adams, in BHETA Member Services on na@bheta.co.uk or on 07946 078566

Apprentice Q &A Julia Haizmann fischer Julia Haizmann, who is undertaking a dual study programme with the fischer Group of Companies takes part in our new regular apprentice Q&A feature... WHAT MADE YOU JOIN THE FASTENER INDUSTRY? I have always been highly impressed by various large‐scale projects in the fixings and fastening industry, such as La Grande Arche in Paris or the world’s largest airport upon completion in Istanbul. I am particularly fascinated by how diverse fixings systems are and by the many applications the respective prod‐ ucts can cover in projects across the globe. The fischer Group of Companies offers fixings systems for the widest range of applications, ranging from large‐scale interna‐ tional projects to the DIY sector. Through completing my degree with the fischer Group of Companies, I was given comprehensive insights into the various target groups and applications of fasten‐ ing technology. Being involved in planning and implementing a large‐scale fastening project at a later stage would be a big dream of mine. Another interesting aspect it the fact that digitalization is also becoming increasingly important in the field of fixings. By using information technology, it has been possible to undergo digital development and create room for innovation in the fixings industry. This ensures that the fixings industry keeps up with developments while keeping its finger ‘on the pulse’. HOW MUCH OF THE JOB INVOLVES TRAINING? At fischer, training is of tremendous importance and is very diverse. Us apprentices and dual degree course students don’t just receive training on a technical level, we also undergo personal development to a large degree through many different seminars and workshops on topics such as teamwork and communication. We also get to know new areas of responsibility in every depart‐ ment we work in, which allows us to expand our skills and knowl‐ edge with new challenges every time. Every employee also has the opportunity to learn extracurric‐ ular topics free of charge in their spare time at our Klaus Fischer EducationCentre. So the work itself contains a high degree of training, as we continuously learn new things while being actively supported.

WHAT DOES A REGULAR DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? When we begin working in a new department, we start with struc‐ ture discussions with employees from the most diverse fields of responsibility within the department in order to become acquainted with their processes and tasks. We support the employees in these departments with a variety of tasks. We are also involved in projects and meetings on current issues and are allowed to take part in these. Under the company’s mission statement‐ ‘innovation, accountability, reliability’ we also work on our own projects. In doing so, it is impor‐ tant to have a good structure and to be able to plan with precision. After I finish work, I often go to the in‐house fitness studio to get involved in sports activities. WAS THERE A LOT OF COMPETITION WHEN APPLYING TO THE COMPANY’S APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME? The training provided by fischer is considered to be of above‐aver‐ age quality, which is not only evidenced by the many awards which fischer has received for its training programme from renowned institutions. As such, a high number of applications are received for each apprenticeship position. The many extras that fischer offers its apprentices make the apprenticeship even more appealing to career entrants. Perks include a trip abroad to one of the subsidiaries, awards for top training achievements as well as the use of a Mercedes‐A‐Class free of charge for the duration of a year. Having a good leaving certificate and evidence of having completed an internship helps applicants to stand out during the selection process. During the interview, you have to give it your all, be convincing and have the objective of obtaining an apprenticeship with fischer in mind‐ this ultimately allowed me to achieve my goal. WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS AFTER COMPLETING YOUR APPRENTICESHIP? Upon completing your apprenticeship there are various options to continue your development with fischer. You can continue with the in‐house Junior Talent Pool, for instance. This one‐year train‐ ing course is designed for young professionals with between one to four years if work experience and aims to help build their skills and potential. Apprentices also receive support with external training programmes. I think it’s fantastic that fischer also offers a specialist career path in addition to the traditional management career path, which allows you to get started as an expert and stand out with your in‐depth knowledge. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN APPRENTICE AT FISCHER? Because training is of such great importance in the fischer company, we receive support from all sides as apprentices. As soon as you start your training, each apprentice and dual degree course student is assigned an apprenticeship mentor and a management mentor who provide advice on various issues and who accompany you throughout your apprenticeship. The individual departments where we work also have apprenticeship representatives who support us during our time in that department. Variety is guaran‐ teed as we regularly switch departments, during which our personal preferences are taken into consideration. By working on joint apprenticeship projects we are encouraged to work and stick together as apprentices and dual degree course students, which is why being an apprentice at fischer is a lot of fun. www.fischer-international.com

TENZ cancels Christmas (for a very good cause) G

raz screw manufacturer TENZ attracted attention when it proclaimed that Christmas was cancelled last Novem‐ ber. However, it was all in a good cause. The aim was to do good together with customers in these challenging times. In mid‐November, TENZ customers were given two options; Opt for a Christmas card or not and for every Christmas card not printed, TENZ pledged to donate €5 to charity. The feedback from the customers was overwhelming, with a strong desire to do something meaningful and at the same time resource‐friendly. The great feedback moti‐ vated TENZ to double the amount saved by the customers and so a sum of €1,860 was made available for the charitable cause.

The recipient was a very worthwhile cause. WEiL (Weiter im Leben, or Continue in life) offers free help for suicidal young people. TENZ said: “For many, the holidays are a very difficult time – for some they are even unbearable and people's hardships are further exacerbated by the crisis. Especially the psychological effects of the crises and the group of young people are largely lost in the public discussion. Therefore the donation went to the aid organisation WEiL.” www.weil-graz.org
