New home, fresh start >> Hard working disabled citizen rewarded with home from municipality JYOTHI LALDAS
I
T was a day of celebration for 42year-old Musawenkosi Sikhakhane from Mandeni when he received keys to a new house from the Mandeni Local Municipality. Sikhakhane, who is wheelchair bound, lives in Ireland Section, ward 13 and has never owned a house before. Mandeni mayor Siphesihle Zulu handed the keys to the house to Sikhakhane on Saturday. The mayor,
members of the community and local volunteers were instrumental in mobilising resources for renovating an identified house to restore and hand-over to Sikhakhane. Sikhakhane said he had always longed to own his own home, but never thought that one day he would have a decent house. “I thank the municipality, the mayor, councillors and the community for helping me and my family become proud home owners.” TO PAGE 3
Councillor Muzi Mkhaliphi with disabled beneficiary Musawenkosi Sikhakhane and mayor Siphesihle Zulu cut the ribbon on the new home.

New pipes for KwaDukuza JYOTHI LALDAS
W
ATER interruptions will soon be a thing of the past for the communities of Stanger Manor and Zinkwazi (Ward 17 and 3 in KwaDukuza) thanks to the upcoming KwaDukuza Pipe Replacement Project. The purpose of the project is to replace and upgrade ageing water reticulation infrastructure which is in poor condition and to provide a safe and reliable water network to KwaDukuza. The iLembe District Municipality recently held public meetings in Zinkwazi and Stanger Manor respectively to introduce the project to ratepayers and residents. In both areas, existing pipes will be replaced with PVC pipes (50mm 350mm) with installation of new pipe fitting and specials including PRV’s, isolating valves, air valves, scour valves, chambers, valve markers and fire hydrants. Meter audits will be undertaken as well as relocation of water meters to property boundaries. The district will also install new meters and establish meter districts and pressure zones as
per the NRW strategy. At the Ocean Reef Hotel in Zinkwazi, mayor of iLembe District Municipality Welcome Mdabe told residents that more than R200 million was owed to the municipality by ratepayers. “We have more than 45 000 consumers on our system and only 3% pay rates. On top of that, there are areas in Maphumulo and Ndwedwe that do not have access to water. These are all the challenges that we have to deal with as the municipality,” he said. In Zinkwazi, a budget of R14, 2 million has been allocated for the Replacement Project and work is expected to commence in the first week of May and finish in November. An estimated 501 households are expected to benefit. At the Stanger Manor Library, the speaker of iLembe, Thokozani Msweli revealed that a budget of R14.2 million for Highridge and R32.2 million for Stanger Heights and Stanger Heights respectively has been allocated for the replacement project. He said a total number of 1 364 households are expected to benefit and work is also expected to start in
Speaker of iLembe District Municipality Thokozani Msweli, speaker of KwaDukuza Thulani Khuluse, Stanger Manor ward councillor Madhun Singh, iLembe Corporate Governance director Yvonne Mathonsi and the acting director of Technical Services in iLembe Notha Maphumulo with the KwaDukuza Pipe Replacement service provider’s representatives in the far left and right. May and end in November. “There will be planned shutdowns during the project and as the District we will try to keep the water interruptions to at least a few hours and not days.” The primary objective of the project is to reduce water loss, service interruptions, water supply costs and to improve operations.
Disabled citizen rejoices as hard work pays off FROM PAGE 1 “The situation has been very difficult for me considering my disability, however, I must mention that being disabled has not limited me in any way at all. “I run a small welding business and that helps put bread on my family’s table. I am a hard working citizen of Mandeni and the mayor himself can testify to that,” Sikhakhane said. He said that people and government should stop feeling sorry for people living with disabilities and seek alternative ways to help small businesses prosper so that disabled people can provide for their own families.
“There are many skilled artisans with disabilities who lack facilities for their day to day operations and we are urging the municipality to assist us.” He also thanked ward 13 for giving disabled people equal opportunities to participate in local government development. His new neighbours, who gathered aroundtheyardtowitnesstheofficialhandover were also excited for Sikhakhane. At the hand-over Zulu said the main objective of the initiative was to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better. “Ultimately it seeks to empower ward 13 and other communities everywhere to
take action and inspire change. “Small businesses have a major role to play in the South African economy in terms of employment creation, income generation and output growth. “The small business sector plays a crucial role in people’s efforts to meet basic needs and help marginalised groups like female headed households, disabled people and rural families,”said Zulu. “We thank everyone who participated in making sure that this house is renovated and cleaned and that Musa and his family have a home. “A united community like Mandeni takes care of it people....” said Zulu.

Uniforms for less fortunate >> Pupils from poverty-riddled area are on the receiving end JYOTHI LALDAS
K
WAZULU-NATAL Legislature speaker Lydia Johnson handed over 128 school uniforms to pupils from Ezimpondweni Primary School in Ndwedwe last week. The school is situated in a remote rural village in Ndwedwe, where poverty levels are high. Of the 148 pupils, 128 received school uniforms through the speaker’s social responsibility programme. The programme is an initiative of the KZN Legislature Speakership, with which Johnson helps communities that are in dire need of certain services. It has made a number of interventions throughout the province, including the distribution of hundreds of mobile science kits, mobile libraries to schools, and seeds and agricultural implements to scores of women controlled co-operatives in rural areas. Johnson said her office will also try and assist the children who did not receive uniforms at the hand-over. “The reason why the other 20 children did not get the uniforms was because when the request was made for our intervention last year, there were only 128 pupils in this school. We brought the uniforms for those 128 as per last year’s request, only to find that the school had taken an additional 20 pupils,” said Johnson. School principal M Simelane said it has always been “painful” for him to see young children walking long distances in winter, barefoot.

“Besides that, this visit has put our schoolonthemap. It is going to restore self esteem to the pupils. They will feel proud of themselves again and hopefully perform even better academically,” said Simelane. Most of the pupils are orphaned while others live in child-headed households. One pupil, Xolani Mbhense, who is in
grade three and was accompanied by his grandmother, said both his parents died when he was very young. “We are surviving on my grandmother’s pension. She has been trying to get us a child support grant without anysuccess.Theclerksneedmoredocuments that we don’t have. We are very grateful to the Speaker of the KZN Legislature,” said Mbhense.

DCLM and ukuPhakamisa worked in partnership with Sappi Stanger, KZN Environmental Affairs, KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife, and the KwaDukuza Municipality to contribute towards Wetland Awareness Month by educating pupils from Lubisana Primary School recently. The pupils were taken to the Sappi Wetland where they were given an informative educational talk about the value of wetlands in our environment. Gcobisa Feke of DCLM said learning through practical examples is more effective in the memory of a child than theory from books. She said that DCLM’s objective and vision is to empower young minds and aid their growing with a better understanding of the value and effect of the environment. The pupils also had an opportunity to sit in a bird hide and observe wetland wildlife. Silva Pillay of KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife gave an informative talk on various birds. Taryn Moonsamy, an environmental specialist from KZN Environmental Affairs and Thembeka Mthuli from KwaDukuza Municipality, spoke about plant life and the role of the wetland in the ecosystem. Sappi handed-out educational packs about the wetlands to all pupils.

Luthuli Museum school debate competition starts
Oelefse has 20 years of corporate experience
SHANNON HOPKINS THE iLembe Chamber of Commerce announced the inception of a new CEO as well as the launch of their Chamber magazine recently, spelling growth for the initiative. Cobus Oelefse has just taken over this month from previous CEO Trenley Tilbrook, who headed up the Chamber for three years. Oelefse has been involved with the iLembe Chamber since its foundation in 2010, initially as an entrepreneur mentor, a member of the Entrepreneurship Steering Committee and more recently as an Executive Committee member. He will still be mentoring this year. Oelefse has 20 years of corporate experience with both JSE and London FTSE listed public companies in the mining, manufacturing, retail logistics and supply chain and the high tech manufacturing and engineering industries. After spending 10 years in the UK, Oelefse returned home to South Africa, and the KZN North Coast in 2009 and has been working as an independent consultant, conducting assignments locally and regionally in Africa for a number of international clients. He holds a BA (Hons), B Comm and LLM degree. Tilbrook will leave the Chamber at the end of this month. “It is with great ‘remorse’ and ‘excitement’ that I am leaving the ilem-

Tilbrook and Oelefse also launched the very first issue of the
Chamber Magazine at a Growth and Development Summit last week, which will serve to inform the business community of their projects. “The magazine showcases some of the achievements and key initiatives as well as the talent of the business community and business environment in the iLembe region,” says Oelefse. “I am excited about all we are aiming for at the Chamber,” he said.
LOCAL grade seven primary school pupils had to put their minds to the test in the first round of the Luthuli Museum ‘Let’s Talk’ debate competition recently. Held over two days, 12 North Coast schools were represented and winners from this round attended the quarter finals today (Wednesday). Best speakers on the first day were from RA Padaychee , Alicia Perumal and Victoria Maquthu and from Stanger Manor Primary, Dhiya Maharaj. On the second day Londeka Mthembu from Mbekamuzi Primary, Bongiwe Chamane from Lloyd Primary and Ernest Saldana Gumede from Glenhills
secondary scored highest. Adjudicators included Karen Bloomgarden, Thaven Harry and Ms Mohau Qalaza from the Durban Local History Museums. The winning schoolswill competeinthe semi-finals on March 5 and the finals on March 12. “Debating teaches the individual a number of different skills, one of which is to respect another person’s arguments, to listen and to have respect,” said adjudicator Karen Bloomgarden. The ‘Let’s Talk’ debate was first held at the Luthuli Museum in 2009. It has since grown from strength to strength with a primary and high school level.

In 2009, Shisalanga Construction installed an asphalt plant at the Waldene Estate Quarry near Nkobongo and Shakaskraal (KwaDukuza Local Municipality, Portion 68 of DE JAGERS KRAAL 874). The production capacity of the plant is 60 to 80 tons per hour. The plant operates daily for 16 hours a day and is fuelled by HFO which is stored on site in two tanks totalling 30 000L. Diesel and Bitumen is stored on site. Bitumen is not a dangerous good therefore storage of dangerous goods on site is less than 80 cubic meters. WORLD Cancer Day was acknowledged at Hirsch Ballito recently with a coffee morning and guest speaker, Jaime Ernst, who heads up the Ballito Cancer Support Network. Ernst gave an update on cancer treatment and the importance of early detection – and prevention. “People have got to be a lot more proactive with regards to taking care of themselves and their families. “Staying out of the sun to avoid the possibility of skin cancer and developing melanomas, eating correctly, regular exercise and having regular health checks – all very important in the prevention of this dreaded disease,” said Ernst. A breakthrough and revolution in cancer treatment was published recently in the Washington based Journal of Science. It discussed the harnessing of thebody’sownimmunedefencestoeliminate tumours. “Cancer immunotherapy marks a turning point in cancer because it is so different to conventional forms of tumour therapy, and this year saw encouragingresultsfromsomeofthefirstclinical trials of drug treatments based on this revolutionary approach,” said Science.
Support CANSA Shavathon 2014. THE Christian Community Ministries (CCM) in KwaDukuza will be hosting the CANSA Shavathon 2014 at the Stanger Super Spar complex on Saturday, 1 March, from 8am to 5pm. The community is urged to support the event by having their heads shaved or sprayed for a donation of R50 per adult or R25 for children under the age of 13. One of the event organisers, Stephen Naidoo, said this is a way to show solidarity or support for those touched by cancer, as losing hair is a common side effect of cancer therapy. “Participants show support by donating a fee to shave or colourspray hair, with some using the fun stencil shapes such as a star, butterfly, flower, soccer ball, lightning bolt and the word warrior. “A new addition from 2013 is the colorful gels that have proven popular with children. The donation is used by CANSA to provide a service to the public and all people affected by cancer,” said Naidoo. All funds raised are used to continue assisting CANSA with delivering their unique, integrated service to the public. Naidoo added they will also have volunteers calling at business houses to enable them to support
the event as they understand business people and their staff are unable to leave their businesses and come to the shopping centres to support the event. “Shavathon is a time to honour those fighting cancer and also to honour loved ones who have passed on. “For some it is an emotional moment of quiet reflection, having their hair shaved in remembrance of those who are touched by cancer, loved ones lost and people they don't even know. “For others, especially the kids, it is a fun and colourful way of raising funds and showing solidarity with the millions of South Africans touched by cancer. “Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by cancer in some way. Shavathon gives you the opportunity to help us fight cancer in a substantial and memorable way. We also appeal to anyone who would like to assist to contact CCM as we need more volunteers.” For further information, Naidoo can be contacted on 084 952 5046. If you are unable to visit Stanger Super Spar please support the tin collections that will be takingplace at different locations in and around KwaDukuza.

end up in novella form – but he is such a professionally inconsequential piece of toast-sweat that no one would bother writing it. The image this festering rectum has of himself is one that is vastly superior to the image others have of him. While he believes he is the town messiah, colleagues in particular see him as the village idiot. My professional time in the company of The Poison Dwarf was thankfully limited, but it made me painfully aware that unless you are self-employed, you will have to answer to someone who has the potential to be an intellectual and ethical sphincter. And of course even if you are an entrepreneur, you may find yourself
adopting the behaviour of a sphincter, which means you are the cretin in this scenario. In preparation for the piece you are reading, which was inspired by a letter from a reader, I sent out the ‘column batsignal’ to a few friends and colleagues who rated the following traits as ones that would render you or me (or them) horrible bosses: It seems the highest scoring quality of a HB is someone who is intellectually disenfranchised. Thus, if you are unable to lead a team because you aren’t quite sharp enough yet you think you are the lost offspring of Einstein - your colleagues will probably treat you like that kid we all once knew in Special Class back in the pre politically
correct 80s: Suspiciously, pitifully and with thinly veiled disdain. Second on the list of less than noble qualities HBs usually possess is taking credit for work that isn’t theirs. This usually entails the HB feigning humility while explaining to their own boss how they are the sole driving force behind your success...and the rising and setting of the sun. Next on the list is, to quote a colleague, “Someone who passes the buck when the sh*t hits the fan”. In other words, if you have instructed a subordinate to do something and your instruction falls foul of policy, it is your fault, not the subordinate’s. Letting the staff member take the proverbial fall on your behalf shows a lack of character. Sexual harassment ranked highly on the rating system for HBs, according to female respondents. Keep your profes-
rapidly growing community. Our understanding is that the Urban Improvement Project is being initiated and driven by a one-man band who has the support of the Chamber of Commerce. This means we as ratepayers are being forced into paying extra levies to
supplement municipal services through a business venture that presents high-risk with no proper support structure or any guarantees. This concept is nothing new and has worked in some areas and failed in others. We are also led to believe that this in-
dustry has evolved considerably from the dated model being proposed. Ballito is very different to Umhlanga and we as prudent ratepayers should explore alternative options before plunging headfirst into another sham project. Anyone wanting extra security and

sional life tidy. If you can’t, resign before you are fired. Indecisiveness, favouritism, poor follow-through, bad planning, lack of support and a slow turnaround time in answering colleagues’ requests also made the list. Your subordinate’s time is just as precious and limited as yours. The more astute reader may have noticed that money has not made it onto the list; which falls in line with much research done on the topic of fulfilled staff. While salary certainly is and should be an issue if you are paid poorly, most employees are looking for respect, appreciation, support and leadership. If you are unable to offer these things, you may be a horrible boss, or at least be in the running to become one. Or, worse, you may be subjecting yourself to the future rant of a columnist who once worked with or for you.

Knowing cholesterol better >> Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, fatty substance made naturally in the body GOOD,bad, highdensity, lowdensity? What is cholesterol exactly and why is it such a health issue? What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a soft, waxy, fatty substancemadenaturallyinthebody, and we need a certain amount because it's vital for the formation of cell structures, hormones and substances that aid digestion. The body makes most of the cholesterol it needs. But cholesterol is also found in some animal food products, and consuming too many can contribute to blood cholesterol becoming dangerously high. Some people have a heriditary condition where their bodies make too much cholesterol. “Good” and “bad” cholesterol There are basically two kinds of cholesterol: 1“Good” or HDL cholesterol (the full term is High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol). HDL cholesterol is sometimes called “good” because it helps remove cholesterol from the arteries, the blood vessels that carry oxygenrich blood from your heart to the body’s cells. 2“Bad”orLDLcholesterol(LowDensi-
ty Lipoprotein cholesterol). LDL cholesterol is sometimes called “bad” because high levels are linked to buildup in your arteries. A helpful way to remember the difference between HDL and LDL: YouwantHDLcholesterollevelstobe HIGH. You want LDL cholesterol levels to be LOW.
Total cholesterol is a measure of the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, including both LDL and HDL cholesterol. What is high cholesterol? High cholesterol is when you have too much cholesterol in your blood. It may also be called high blood cholesterol, hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia.
Your total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol may be too high, or your HDL cholesterol too low. The most important effect of high cholesterol is that it can cause narrowing and blockages in the arteries. Excess cholesterol, and other substances normally found in the blood like calcium and fat, can start to build up just under the lining of artery walls. The areas of the artery wall where cholesterol and other matter collects are called “plaques”. The formation of plaques in the arteries is a condition called atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries”. How arteriosclerosis progresses Over time, the plaques get harder andnarrowthearteriesfurther, limiting blood flow and damaging the artery wall. The rougher the plaques makethearterylining, themorelikely substanceslikeplatelets, whichmake the blood sticky and promote clotting, will also get trapped there. If narrowing occurs in the coronary arteries, which carry oxygenrich blood to the heart muscle itself, the condition is called coronary ar-
tery disease or coronary heart disease, which raises risk for heart attack. Coronary artery disease may cause angina: pain or a sensation of pressure in your chest. You may also feel angina pain in your arms, shoulders, neck, jaw or back; it may even feel like indigestion. A section of plaque can break open, causingabloodclottoform:this can suddenly and dramatically block blood flow to a vital organ. Blood clots can also break free and travel in the body to cause blockages elsewhere. A heart attack occurs if blood flow to part of the heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked. If you don't have emergency treatment to quickly get the blood flowing again, the section of heart muscle starved of oxygen-rich blood can die. A heart attack may be fatal. Blockages in the arteries that supply the brain can lead to stroke, which damages the section of brain tissue deprived of oxygen-rich blood. Strokes are also sometimes fatal. Infection and lifestyle trigger peptic ulcers Further research has found that as much as 40 percent of the population have the infection in their stomachs. Many of those remain unaffected,but10percentofthoseharbouring the infection go on to develop peptic ulcers. It is thought that ulcers are triggered in this group by a number of factors, such as chronic stress, genetics, smoking and coffee-drinking. How does the infection spread? This infection is most often found in people who live in confined spaces with many others. Theinfectionispresentinsalivaandisthought to be in faeces too. Obviously, good personal hygiene is important in preventing the spreading of this infection. It is also found more often in people over the age of 65 and the reason for this is thought to be that many of them were infected as a result of living conditions during the Second World War. The consequences of the infection Most people harbouring this infection will suffer no ill effects throughout their lives. Ten percent of them, however, will go on to develop peptic ulcers. It is not known exactly what triggers this. When the infection is present, it causes the stomach to produce more acid and the stomach lining to become thinner, allowing acid to penetrate. H. pylori infection does not cause heartburn or GORD and in some patients it appears to protect against some of the symptoms of these two conditions. It is not yet fully understood why this happens. It is also not yet clear which role, if any, the infection plays in the development of stomach cancer. 3 CATO STREET (Above Blue Flame Motors), Stanger The discovery of these bacteria certainly OFFERING KOREAN TRAINING IN: changed the way doctors treat peptic Taekwondo Self Defence ulcers. in the first place. The discovery of helicobacter pylori In the early 1980s, two Australian doctors, Warren and Marshall, found a bacterium that lived in the lower half of the stomach. This bacterium had found a way of concealing itself in the stomach lining in such a way, that it could not be attacked and destroyedlikeotherbacteriathatfoundits way into the stomach. They were unsure whether the bacterialinfectioncausedthegastritisorwhether the gastritis allowed the infection to flourish. Dr Marshall infected himself with the bacteria, developed gastritis, and then cured himself with a course of antibiotics. This proved that the bacteria caused the gastritis. This bacteria was always associated with a microscopic inflammation of the stomach lining, called gastritis. Thisbacteriahassincebeenassociated with chronic gastritis, active chronic duodenitis, duodenal ulcers and gastric ulceration. It also strongly linked to stomach cancer. Initially this bacteria was called Campylobacter Pylori, but was recently renamed Helicobacter pylori. A particularly virulent strain of H.pylori is known as cytotoxin-associated gene A (cag A). This causes damage severe enough to produce precancerous changes.

All about Attention Deficit
HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
>> No single test can diagnose a child as having ADHD ADVERTORIAL
A
TTENTION deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity). ADHD has three subtypes: Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive >>Most symptoms (six or more) are in the hyperactivity-impulsivity categories. >>Fewer than six symptoms of inattention are present, although inattention may still be present to some degree. Predominantly inattentive >>Themajorityofsymptoms(sixormore) are in the inattention category and fewer thansixsymptomsofhyperactivity-impulsivity are present, although hyperactivityimpulsivity may still be present to some degree. >>Children with this subtype are less likely to act out or have difficulties getting along with other children. They may sit quietly, but they are not paying attention to what they are doing. Therefore, the child may be overlooked, and parents and teachers may not notice that he or she has ADHD. Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive >>Six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity are present. >>Most children have the combined type of ADHD. Causes Scientists are not sure what causes ADHD, although many studies suggest that genes play a large role. Like many other illnesses, ADHD probably results from a combination of factors. In addition to genetics, researchers are looking at possible environmentalfactors, andarestudyinghowbrain injuries, nutrition, and the social environment might contribute to ADHD. Signs and Symptoms Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. It is normal for all children to be inattentive, hyperactive, or impulsive sometimes, but for children with ADHD, these behaviors are more severe and occur more often. To be diagnosed with the disorder, a child must have symptoms for 6 or more months and to a degree that is greater than other children of the same age. Childrenwhohavesymptomsofinat-

SAFA KWADUKUZA LOCAL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION: FIXTURES
ROCKY Park United extended their 8-match unbeaten record since the start of the 2013/2014 season after snatching a late 3-2 win against Cobra in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Division One League game played at the Recreation Ground. The KLFA Division One log leaders were stunned after their rivals took a surprise 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Nthuku Mthiyane was brought down just outside the box after a reckless tackle by the United central defender and the referee did not hesitate to award Cobra a free- kick. Mthokozisi Mathaba's powerful shot beat the United keeper and rebounded off the crossbar. The ball fell invitingly at the feet of Mthiyane, who made no mistake from close range to give Cobra a 1-0 lead. Cobra's joy was short lived after Rishal Singh weaved his way into the box and found

Singh twins, he selfishly shot at goal, hitting the side-netting. Sanele Zulu beat the offside trap and was overwhelmed with the one-on-one opportunity with the United keeper, before fluffing his shot and kicking wide. Midfielder Riaz Williams, who controlled the engine-room with precision, watched in despair after his long range shot was acrobatically saved the Cobra keeper. In the final 15 minutes tempers flared and there were some robust challenges coming especiallyfromthedesperateUnitedplayerswho were fortunate to remain on the field after being cautioned (yellow-carded) by the referee. In the dying minutes of the game, Williams was brought down in the box and the referee did not hesitate to award United a penalty. Percy Lucas converted the resultant spot-kick to give United a hard earned 3-2 win and keep their unblemished record intact. AnelatedUnitedcoachLarryWilliamssaid: "It was a tough game and the Cobra outfit tested our resolve. We need more composure in front of goals if we hope to secure the KLFA Division One League title at the end of the season.” Meanwhile, in an earlier game Tigers overcame Tornado (2-1) in a KLFA Division One League game. Nkosikhona Mthembu put Tigers ahead in the 15th minute with a brilliant solo effort. In the 35th minute Thabiso Dlamini was brought down in the box and Mpendulo Mthembu converted the resultant spot-kick to give Tigers a commanding 2-0 lead going into the break.
