KwaZuluNatal Premier Senzo Mchunu brings all faiths together MERVYN KRISHNA
K
WAZULU-NATAL Premier Senzo Mchunu called on the community of KwaDukuza to pray for peace, harmonyandunityinsociety at this very important time for the nation. Mchunu was speaking at the KZN Provincial Prayer Day ceremony on Thursday at the KwaDukuza Recreation Ground. “Let us turn to almighty God and ask for his mercy and guidance. For indeed almighty God is the source of peace and from him alone comes peace. Certainly, when we know God, we will find peace and when there is no God in our lives there can be no peace,” he said. The premier urged citizens to respect each other, to be tolerant with one another and to
respect the choice of each other. “This is a free and democratic society, in which each citizen is free to support and vote for the party of his or her choice. Therefore, this democratic right of each citizen must be respected. Hence, the exercise of this right should not be the cause of animosity nor should it be a source of hate and strife among us.” Mchunu urged all South Africans to strongly reject any appeal to racial and ethnic sentiments, hate mongering, racial discord and strife. “Such appeal must be regarded as lowly, immoral and indecent, which has no place in a democratic and civilised society. We are all brothers and sisters, all South Africans, regardlessofrace, creed, color, classor status. We cannot allow these artificial barriers to create divi-

EVER again shall a craving for a glass of wine on a Sunday evening go unsatisfied. Local liquor stores had their first Sunday of sales on 2 March, which was reportedly well supported. This change in the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Licensing Act was announced by MEC of KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development and Tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu last week. Some say they are not in favour of the new LiquorActstipulations, butstoressayat least the public will have a choice. Tops Lifestyle manager Lorraine Govender said the announcement was very sudden and the team had to quickly rally staff to be available for work on Sunday, from 10am to 3.30pm, as per legislation.
“It was quite a shock as it was so sudden, but we will give staff other time off for working on Sundays now. The store was actually really busy for the first Sunday shift last week,” said Govender. “Ithinksomeofthereligiousgroups will not be pro the new law, but at least people can choose to purchase or not now,” she added. In his speech, Mabuyakhulu said previous legislature had failed to address the economic aspects of the industry, and that most people drank responsibly. “We are all aware that the abuse of liquor continues to be a contributory factor to many unnecessarydeathsandactsof violence in our country.
“While some do abuse alcohol, the majority do use responsibly,” he said. “The old laws banned alcohol sales on Sunday not just for the greater goodofthecommunity, butinfurtherance of narrow sectarian and religious interest,” added Mabuyakhulu.

EVERYDAY
Abusive employers, beware I would like to tell you about my experience of what I believe is abusive behaviour in the workplace, particularly in a business known as a “oneman-band businesses of all types”. These are the kind of people who profess to run their business on a fair and respectful platform towards their staff, but in actual fact they don’t do this. I can give you first-hand experience of the most horrific incidents from employers towards their staff: torment, shouting, accusatory, sadistic and downright bullish and cruel behaviour. However, the minute a customerwalksthroughthe door, theemployerturnsintoasmiling and charming owner. This brings me to the next factor which is salaries and bonuses for the staff. Examples of low salaries
being paid for very long hours of work with no form of incentive or reward is the call of the day by the employer. For some or other reason some employers think that making their staff work for 13 days in a row is acceptable. This is not only abusive towards the more than hardworking employee, but it flies in the face of everyone, because the owner is living the high life with absolutely no recognition for the staff. Those same staff members are the ones generating this high lifestyle for the employer. Conveniently the “weak economy” is used as an excuse by the owner for lack of compensation towards the staff. Conveniently, the employer knows very well that most people need to work these days, but for some strange reason they think they have the upper hand.
Another very unnerving experience has been where owners try to get away with indiscretions of all types in various fields and all that under the cloak of God. May I offer some very words of advice to all employees seeking employment? Please do your homework on your prospective new employer before you embark on your new career. I myself have been an owner of a very successful business. I am fortunate enough to know both sides of the working situation. With my given successful experience as an employer, I knowfullwellthattheemployers whom I have had to deal with recently have a lot to learn from the employees, who could very well be far more competent than the employers Know your rights

is Thanksgiving! NERESH GAYAPERSHAD DID anything great happen to you in the last 24 hours? I mean something monumental... something you're so thankful for that you felt like breaking out in song? Go ahead, review your day. Maybe you're thinking about whether you received any cheques in the mail or perhaps you're just delighted because today's mail didn’t include any bills! As you consider this question, you might reach the conclusion that nothing truly spectacular occurred. But, hold on for a moment. Did you have a place to stay last night shielding from the elements? Imagine what it might be like if you and your family didn't have a roof over your heads. Is there a bathroom, plumbing or hot water where you live? Does that make your life a little more comfortable? From the time you awoke, did you have the useofyoureyesighttoseethesunandthebeautiful blue sky? Were you able to get out of bed, walk around and go outside? Some people won't have that luxury today. What about your hearing? Can you hear the sounds of the birds chirping or the wind rustling through the trees? At breakfast, could you smell the fresh coffee brewing or the toast after it popped up in the toaster? What would a day be like if you couldn't hear or smell or if you couldn't taste your food?

Yes, there are people who don't have the full use of these senses. Andwhataboutthosethingsthataren'tnecessarytosurvive,butthatenhanceyourday-today existence, items like a car, a radio, a television or a computer? Are you truly thankful for theseandothergiftsyouregularlyuse?I'msure that you get my point. Each day, we have dozens of reasons to give thanks. Yet we generally take these things for granted and fail to see them as precious items to be cherished. Of course, when any one of them is taken from us, even temporarily, we take notice. But, day in and day out, we rarely consider our blessings. Why am I making such a big fuss about this? It's simple. When you focus on gratitude and other positive emotions, you feel better and are more relaxed, more creative and more productive. You also have a positive influence on those around you, at work and at home.It costs us nothing to be grateful and appreciative, yet it has a considerable impact on the quality of our lives. So, don't waste another minute. Every day, reflectonthepricelessgiftsyou'vebeenenjoying. Openly share your gratitude with others. And, the next time somebody asks if anything great happened to you today, you will have plenty to say!

IT’S Oscar season in South Africa and this one does not come with all the glitz and glamour presented at the Academy Awards version in the United States. The Oscar Pistorius case, which has its own chan nel on DStv, is in your face, whether you like it or not. There is a blow by blow account on social media sites, the Carte Blanche channel is breaking the story down piece by piece on their 24hour channel and every local news site is dominated by the trial. SouthAfrica’s‘trialofthecentury’hasbegun and no matter what the outcome, citizens are interested in some aspect of this story. However, before Oscar season began Pravin Gordhan delivered the budget speech and didn’t sur prise many with the results. The word of the day being ‘increase’ petrol (again), sin taxes (alcohol and smoking) and the weakening rand. Gordhan also said that government’s focus in 2014 is to eliminate wasteful spending and corruption. South Africans are feeling the pinch with the number of increases and many are looking for a silver lining. Locally, residents have complained about the lack of proper public transport systems and have no cheaper option to get to places in the interim eThekwini is trying to remedy their ongoing bus problems. Judging by some of the comments on social me dia, some have decided to stop sitting around and complaining and are ready to make a mark come election time in May. WEEKLY REPORTER OFFICIALS of Ilembe Darts Association were left redfaced after the poor turn out at the fouraside darts tournament held at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall on Wednesday night. A mere 20 players converged at the
Disappointing turnout at darts tournament Action Sports Bar to participate in the third darts tournament of the 2014 sea son resulting in two teams (comprising of four players each) advancing to the semi's without throwing a single dart. Ilembe Darts Association experienced a decline in membership over the last five years since moving their base to Darnall with the problem reaching alarming proportions in the last two
years. Last year, a mere three clubs (comprising of six teams) comprising of a maximum of 40 players participated in the darts league programme. Officials of Ilembe Darts Association, aim to find an alternative venue (pref erably in KwaDukuza) in the hope of in creasing their membership or take radi cal steps (offer more incentives) to en courage more players to participate in darts.
Failure to increase their membership could result in the untimely death of competitive darts in KwaDukuza with the hope of prospective players being selected to participate in the national darts championship shat tered. In the 4aside darts tournament held on Wednesday night, the quartet of Sanjay Singh, Sashen Naidoo, Ter rence Subban and Rajesh Parasaraman
beat Jerry Govender, Charlie Pillay, Vish alin Parmasivan and Vasa Rungasamy (21) to emerge champions. Subban was in prolific form, notch ing up a brilliant 171 (comprising of three treble 19's). Tonight (Wednesday), Ilembe Darts Association will host a mixed trebles (threeaside) tournament at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall commencing at 7.30pm.
Dawnheights notched up an impressive double-header victory over the weekend. On Saturday they beat Ashraffiya by a solitary wicket in a domestic Twenty-20Leaguegameplayedatthe Country Club Ground and on Sunday they trounced Mandeni by 81-runs in a 50-Overs League game played at the Gledhow Ground. In the match on Saturday, Dawnheights won the toss and elected to field first. Ashraffiya posted 128/5 in their allotted 20-overs. Ozary (41) and Umar (33) were the main contributors for Ashraffiya. Adhil Mohan was the most economi-
cal Dawnheights bowler claiming 3/30 from four overs. Dawnheights snatched victory in the last delivery of the match after Ali Pillay (15 not out) dispatched the ball to the boundary. Mukul Mishra (32) top-scored for Dawnheights. On Sunday, Dawnheights won the toss against Mandeni and elected to bat first. They posted 119/9 in 47overs. Keane Govender (37), Avishkar Ramduth (24) and Suveer Maharaj (16) were the top scorers for Dawnheights. T. Maoyi (4/18 from 4 overs) and S. Dlamini (2/20 from 10 overs) were the most successful Mandeni bowlers. Chasing 120 runs for victory (at a rate of 2,4 runs per over) the visitors were skittled out for 38 runs in the 26th over. Man-of-thematch Maharaj was the destroyer-inchief for Dawnheights, claiming 6 wickets for 11 runs from 10 overs. He was well supported by Govender (2/15 from 10 overs) and Ramduth (2/11 from four overs).
Manor trounce Warriors International WEEKLY REPORTER MANOR trounced Warriors International by 253 runs in an Ilembe Cricket Union 50-Overs League game played at the Country Club Ground on Saturday. The marriage between Pak International and Warriors Sporting in the hope of combining forces to defend their domestic 50-overs league seemed to have hit the rocks since the beginning of February. Rajiv Mathapersad, manager of Warriors International, said: "The marriage between us and Pak International is over due to creative differ-
ences. We opted to re-build our side with younger players and give them a chance to develop". The decision by Manor to bat first after winning the toss backfired after Yusuf Bhorat was dismissed by Jureno Govender for four runs. Alveiro Nadasen joined Radeshwar Singh at the crease and this pair showed scant respect for the youthful Warriors attack. They put on a splendid 151-runs partnership before Singh was run out for 43 runs (which included three fours and a six). Nadasen, who has been in prolific form with the bat throughout the sea-
son, scored a mammoth 142 runs (which included 20 boundaries and two huge sixes) before being caught and bowled by Pratheer Ramkaran. Manor posted 318/6 in their allotted 50-overs. Ramkaran (3/52 from 10 overs) and Govender (2/31 from 8 overs) were the pick of the Warriors bowlers. In reply Warriors were bundled out for a paltry 65 runs with Ramkaran (25) the only batsman to offer any resistance.
