>> Chamber of Commerce take up arms against North Coast power crisis SHANNON HOPKINS

T

HE iLembeChamber of Commerce have stepped in, on behalf of the local business sector, to help resolve electricity shortage issues on the North Coast. This comes after outages in previous weeks and the urgent implementation of load shedding on Thursday left some businesses high and dry. Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse said he attended a meeting in Johannesburg on the matter on Tuesday

with the South African ChamberofCommerceand Industry (SACCI) and forum, the Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba MP and Eskom CEO Brian Dames. The meeting was held to discuss improvement of service delivery and ‘ensure Eskom and government are reminded on a constantbasisoftheimpact of electricity supply issues on the local economy, its growth prospects and resulting issues such as job creation’. Oelofse explained that

the National Energy RegulatorofSA(Nersa)wouldalso need to be engaged at SACCIleveltoraiseefficiency improvements with service providers. He said alternative solutions are on the cards. “In the longer term, the iLembe Chamber will work with both local and district role players to consider ways of encouraging and promoting both energy saving and appropriate alternative energy solutions,” said Oelofse. A dreary, blue Monday turned out to be a happy one when RedCap Foundation volunteers from left, Laila Simon, Belinda Adams, Steve Turner and Jessica Swart took time out of their busy schedules to help upgrades classrooms at St Christopher and Nyakana Primary Schools in rural KwaDukuza. There was great excitement among the pupils as they watched their art classrooms being transformed into colourful and creative spaces thanks to the RedCap volunteers and their heart for art. The RedCap Foundation is currently assisting five schools in the KwaDukuza region (Aldinvile, Zilungisele, St Chris topher, Kearsney and Nyakana) incorporating whole school improvement models encouraging participa tion in school sport, arts and cultural activities, tech education, environmental initiatives and leader ship capacity building programmes.

Water project gushing on

>> A pipeline from the Thukela River to help alleviate ongoing North Coast water woes is on track SHANNON HOPKINS

T

HE Lower Thukela Bulk Water project is well on its way. Work started late last year on the two-phase project, un-

dertaken by Umgeni Water. Umgeni Water stakeholder manager Shami Harichunder explained that contractors were working on the first phase. “The project consists of the constructionofaWaterTreatment Works on the north bank of the Thukela River, an abstraction works on the south bank, a weir across the river, 29km of 900mm diameter gravity pipeline, 3km of 900mm diameter rising main and associated pump-station and the supply of bulk electrical power to the works,” said Harichunder.

He said the work is on track for the original deadline - March 2016. The total cost of the project is R1,342 billion. A resident said it was sad that the work was taking place in one of Mandeni’s natural spots, and the weir being built on a stretch that residents use for recreation. “The spot used to be known as Mandeni’s paradise and residents used to go swimming there. It is sad to lose such a picturesque part of our landscape, but solving the water problem is more important,” he said.

Gran arrested after burning grandson A 52-YEAR-OLD Umhlali grandmother appeared in court facing charges of child abuse after she was accused of burning her grandson with an iron. Jabulile Cele, who has apparently been evading police for almost a week, was arrested last Tuesday. It's alleged that she burned her 13year-old orphaned and mentally-challenged grandson on his arms, legs and forehead. A teacher at the child’s special school noticed the burns and took the boy to the principal's office. A case was thereafter opened by the school. She appeared in the Ndwedwe Magistrate'sCourtwhichwaspackedtocapacity with community members. According to school principal Anesh Singh when confronted, Cele claimed that the child burned himself. Consumers urged to conserve “SomeofourbiggerChambermembersarealready far down the line with initiatives such as cogeneration – the opportunities and benefits around such initiatives will be promoted and encouraged by the Chamber to keep businesses afloat,” said Oelofse. Eskom announced emergency load shedding last Thursday, with areas such as Salt Rock and Esenembe being affected. Although the emergency was lifted at 10pm on Thursday evening, a rotational schedule has been drawn up which may be implemented by Eskom as and when it is needed. The problem last week was caused by ‘wet coal’, according to Eskom. Salt Rock was without power for most of Thursday afternoon, making running of businesses and daily chores difficult for residents. Tiffany’s Spar owner Charles Wilson said businesses in the centre were affected. “We are lucky to have a generator, and we ran it for three or four hours on Thursday. “Other smaller enterprises in the centre do not have alternative power and lost business,” he said. North Coast KwaDukuza Rate Payers Association (NCKDRPA) chairman Ray Millican saidinhisopiniontheemergency, andBallito’s other power and water problems, is due to ‘backward planning’. “There is no question in our minds that unsuitable and unqualified people are being employed for higher positions. They are thus incapable of forward planning and, as a result, we have this situation,” said Millican. Load shedding will be implemented in threestagesifnecessary-stageonebeingleast serious, and three being urgent. In stage one situations 1000mw will need to be shed, stage two will require 2000mw and stage three will require up to 4000mw to be shed. Eskom calls on consumers to use electricity wisely by switching off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances when not needed to reduce the impact of load shedding. In January 2008 Eskom introduced load shedding, which is planned rolling blackouts basedonarotatingschedule, inperiodswhere shortsupplythreatenstheintegrityofthe grid. The local schedules are available from KwaDukuza Municipality. For more details, contact 032 437 5000.

lieve a human being can burn himself repeatedly with a hot iron. The Department of Social Development called on the state not to grant bail. Medical reports indicate that although the teen sustained third degree burns, he is recovering in hospital. Department spokesperson Ncumisa Fandezi also raised concerns over the increasing levels of violence against defenceless children. "We are deeply saddened by the fact that this poor child was abused by the very same person who was supposed to be protecting him. We would like to appeal to our communities to [protect our children]. We are also calling for all those who commit these crimes to be brought to book." The case has been postponed to Friday for bail application. The grandmother was remanded custody.

Sappi Resource Centre endeavours to empowers students MERVYN KRISHNA THE Sappi KwaDukuza Resource Centre hosted the 2013 Afrisun sponsored skills development certificate presentation recently at the centre. The aim of the programme is to promote a sense of dignity, independence bestowed in being financially self-sufficient. The programme has provided ma-

triculants with an opportunity to upgrade or develop various life skills that would prove to be an asset for their future. Centre manager, Collin Naicker said most of the students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, without financialcapacitytopursuetertiaryeducation. "They had the opportunity to develop skills in finance, Pastel Ac-

counting, ICT, communication, leadership and business skills," said Naicker. Naicker said students received assistance in pursuing jobs as well as entrepreneurial ventures. "Eleven students have temporary and permanent work placements. Five students are self-employed and four are currently furthering their studies.

Get the right qualification

ADVERTORIAL

A

LTHOUGH there are no real short cuts when it comes to education and climbing the career ladder, there are qualifications that can make it a little easier for job seekers to get going in the world of world. A Diploma in Office Administration, says Kerry Damons of Boston City Campus & Business College, is a case in point. "Getting a Diploma in Office Administration gives job seekers skills they can put to use in almost any organisation," she said. "Not only are there many positions available in that field, but the positions stretch across

industries and types of organisation as well as across levels of seniority and offer career growth opportunities.OurOfficeAdministrationcourse has many features that make it ideal for anyone who wants to further his or her career as an office professional, and in particular for the first time job seeker," Damons explains. Firstly, learners may enrol for the course irrespective of their prior knowledge or experience, provided they have a Matric (Grade 12) Certificate. Secondly, the qualification has different exit points, so a learner decides how far he or she wishes to go and when to exit the qualification. There are three exit levels, resulting in three different qualifications. The third is a Diploma: Office Administration at NQF Level 6. "There aren't many qualifications out there that give you this kind of training and professional recognition in such a short, intense period of

time," said Damons. "It is hard work as you'd have to complete 360 credits within two years, but it is certainly worthwhile if that is your choice of career." Who are office administrators? Essentially, office administrators are the people that ensure organisations run smoothly and efficiently. Office administrators can be responsible for any office function from data entry, correspondence and client communication to organisational support and party planning. They are the face of an office, greeting clients and visitors and helping to direct them as needed. Even in large companies, the smooth running of an office depends on the skills of a good administration team. The choices abound: office administrators can choose a specific industry to work in such media, manufacturingormedicalandgoontospecialise in such an industry. Depending on experience and

qualifications, they can move into positions such as accounts officer, bookkeeper, officemanager, company secretary, hospital administrator, logistics officer/manager and executive assistant to management, to mention a few. "We are thrilled to offer this course withsuchhighaccreditationlevels,as

well as three exit levels. With the right qualification and experience, an Office Administrator can go as far as he or she wishes to," said Damon. JYOTHI LALDAS BOSTON City Campus and Business Col lege Stanger was a hive of activity last Thursday. The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) set up their mobile clinic in the campus canteen with a task of collecting blood for those in need. The staff armed with information booklets and their specialised resources were surprised with the overwhelming support they received from campus stu dents and the public. Students rallied to get in line to as sist this great cause. Kicking of the blood drive, principal Annie Wilson was one of the first people to roll up her sleeve followed by staff and students. Members of the SANBS thanked the college and public for ensuring that their daily target was successfully ex ceeded. Information about future blood drives at the campus will be announced in the local media.

Salsa and two left feet STEPH MCLENNAN ON Saturday night, I semigate crashed a friendofafriend’s birthday party in Pietermaritz burg. This party reinforced every stereotype about the drinking capabilities of Pietermaritzburg residents, andthoseofuswhohad bused up from Durban were ex pected to quickly blend in. Three shots of tequila in quick succession made me forget that I have two left feet, absolutely no coordination and a tendency to think big while under the influ ence.

When the salsa lesson began, I jumped onto the dance floor, and easily caught the rhythm of twostepsforward and two stepsback. If I got an occasional left foot mixedupwitharightfoot,Iargued that since I don’t have a right foot, this would have been impossible. I admitted defeat when the stepping turned to sidemanoeu vres and twirls. It reminded me of the time I attended one of Lisa Raleigh’s free zumba classes at Suncoast. While Raleigh is a fantastic instructor, the glances of the peo ple near me turned to stares, and the stares turned to laughter as I bobbed when everyone twirled; twirled when everyone jumped; and jumped when everyone ceased movement at the end of a song. Having seen me halt my pa thetic attempts at learning salsa, the kindhearted and brave in structor later approached me and selflessly offered to take to the dance floor with me, with no thought for the safety of his toes, or those of his friends on the dance floor. I politely but firm

ly declined his offer, having no de sire to make a fool of myself or crush his selflesstoes. Another aspect of this evening worthmentioning istheconfusion surrounding the dress code. Vari ous changes of hearts on the part of the birthday boy in the week leading up to the event led to the 50 or so people at the event being dressed as everything from prin cesses, devils and dragons to sheiks and harems. The advantages of arriving at such an event in a prehired mini bus are obvious. One can drink to one’s heart content without having to consult @pigspot on Twitter before driv ing home and hope like hell that all roadblocks between partyand home have been tweeted. The disadvantages include sharingabus homewithstrangers who feel nothing to throw their drinks over you en route and sub ject you to long and arrogant soliloquies about how successful and rich they are. It was all worth it to sing “Happy birthday dear Stranger...HappyBirthdaytoyou!”

N Germany between October 1939 and August 1941, Adolf Hitler sanctioned the Action T4/Euthanasia Programme. Criterion for euthanasia was simple: ‘life unworthy of life’. The‘mentallyill’and‘incurably ill’fellintothiscategory.Achildeu thanasia programme was estab lished in order to eradicate ‘spreading’of deficient genes and later shiftedtoadultsnotdeemed worthy of life. At this time in Nazi Germany you would be eligible for eutha nasia if you had an abnormally small head, a swollen head or de formed limbs. Paralysis and Down Syndrome also made one unworthy of life, as did epilepsy, schizophrenia and encephalitis. Eventually children eligible for euthanasia came to include ‘those designated as juve nile delinquents’. The Nazi propaganda ma chine premiered films anddistrib utedliterature toinformthepublic of conditions at asylums and how much money was being wastedinkeepingalive those that were unable to contribute any thing meaningful by Nazi stand ards to society.

As WWII swung into action, corners had to be cut, and ‘mercy killing’would save the statemon ey. During this time it is estimated that close on 300 000 people were killed using ‘the best availa ble human judgement [to per form a] mercy death’. Historians who have studied the T4 pro gramme tell us that the ‘mercy deaths’ were ‘nearly always car ried out without the consent of the people concerned or their families’. But this is Adolf Hitler we are talking about; in an era when education and propaganda were the same thing. So what is a hu man being worth over 70 years later? According to research under taken by the U.S. department of soils and agriculture or some such body a few years ago, if the chemi cal and mineral components of the human body were added up, we would be worth about R1000. This doesn’t include organs, where, if you are having a particu larly tight month, you can rake in a tidy R6000+ for your spleen, according to black market prices. But then we get to ‘statistical life’ value. Simply put, this is the amount the taxpayer should (theoretically) be willing to pay to stop the death of one human being. Reports released by the Obama administration in 2011 in dicated that the value of statisti cal life was $6.1 million. Since statistical life value is used as a benchmark for deciding on regulation, if your life doesn’t

hold as much statistical value as the lives of others, corners can be cut. Thus things such as pollution and crime are not as tightly regu lated in areas where human life has a lower statistical value. Determining the value of hu man life is tricky. Your mom prob ably thinks you are worth the lives of 10 people. Your boss probably doesn’t. Your government may think your life is more worthwhile if you are an active contributor to eco nomic and social growth in the form of taxes so might your neighbours. But the value of human life also fluctuates with social pres sure, legislation and culture, as seen in the often highly emotive debates over abortion. I have always found it ironic that on the same wing of a hospital doctors will fight to save the life of a 20weekold prema ture ‘baby’ but in another room a 20weekold ‘foetus’ will be aborted. Who decides the worth of the baby or the foetus? And why is it that abortion appears to be targeted at the poor and non whites? So, do we gain worth from our race?Arewemoreworthyifweare middleclass? Are we more wor thy if we have two children instead of five? Do riches or a degree make us wise or equip us to impart wis dom and worth? Who decides this? And more importantly, why do we let them?

Potholes invade street parking lot The public have had to suffer months of potholes which grew bigger especially in the critical ar ea at the exit/entrance of the parking lot. Entrepreneur seizes home owners market

with. Over and above the R40 000 worth of training and mentorship he received through the iLembe Chamber’s Entrepreneur Programme, Gumede walked away with R25 000 prize money, R3 000 worth of marketing collateral, and advertising space and editorial coverage in local publications. All of this has led to a quadruple increase in sales over the five month period after the competition fin ished. His success has inspired entrepreneurs in Groutville and KwaDukuza alike who are excited to see this young man set a trend. Instead of blowing his own trumpet, Gumede says his success has challenged him to be consistent in high quality, to be more disciplined and to build his customers’ trust in him. Gumede is a selftaught, selfemployed carpen ter who identified a highly valuable market that had beenleftunattendedandunderservicedbyindustry players for years – the black, middle income home owners, initially in the Groutville area – and he has become number one in this market. This income group has over the years gradually upgraded their standard of living, but, due to limited resources, has been unable to acquire the services of bigger industry players whose services have tar geted the high income sector. Gumede designs and fits custom kitchens, bath rooms and bedrooms each unique to the needs and desires of each individual customer. The iLembe Chamber’s Entrepreneur Competi tion’s judges were impressed by his “absolute com mitment to quality”, as are his customers who sing the praises of his work. Their satisfaction spread mostly through word of mouth and has lifted his business exposure. This, coupled with the exposure from the entrepreneur competition, has led to sales spiralling up. Gumede recounts how one of the homeowners at Seaward Estates saw a cupboard he was making for his domestic worker and insisted that he must install his kitchen as well. Superior Kitchens’ customer base has grown be yond its initial niche and the homeowners of Umhlali Country Club and other estates have been seeking its services. Gumede’s dream to see his business go international may be much closer than he could ever imagine. With matric under his belt, Gumede says his late uncle Bheki taught him everything he knows. WithnomoneyfortertiaryeducationGumededecid ed to work and earn a living. Starting with welding and selling burglar guards, Gumede thereafter took an interest in his uncle’s cupboard making business and decided to follow him and learn as much as he could from him. When his uncle passed away in 2010, Gumede took over the business – through commitment and the valuable lessons learned through the entrerpre neur programme, his business quickly grew beyond his uncle’s orginal humble operation. GumedesaystheiLembeChamber’scompetition took him “from step one to step 10”. “When I came into the programme I was lost. It was the first time I heard of a business plan. What is my target market? What are the important and key things to focus on? How to market my product and business? I learnt so much,” he said. Henotesthatsomepeopledonotknowwhotheir target market is – they just sell to anyone. “Theprogrammedoesnotjustgiveordinarybasic information but equips you with skills that will work for the rest of your life.” He also encourages young entrepreneurs to apply what they are taught in life. “Knowledge is not power if you don’t apply it,” he says. Gumede has certainly applied what he learned – prior to the eEntrepreneur competition he got an average of two kitchen orders every two months; now he gets up to four kitchen orders every month excluding additional wardrobe and bathroom or ders. Thankful for the knowledge gained from the En trepreneur programme, Gumede will be joining the iLembe team to increase awareness of the pro gramme and will be visiting schools in KwaDukuza andGroutvillewiththeTheEntrepreneur2014Road shows. A new home for Dolphin Coast Hospice

I-Lipo Money well spent

MERVYN KRISHNA THE Dolphin Coast Hospice officially opened their new premises at the Stanger Siva Sungam Hall basement on Saturday. Community stalwart and president of the Stanger Siva Sungam SV Naicker, who was instrumental in securing the interim facility for hospice, was the guest of honour. The centre comprises a lounge and dining room, kitchen, arts and crafts area, a quiet room and assisted bathrooms as well as treatment and consulting rooms and offices. Chairman of the hospice Zaf Khan said the new building gives the organisation improved facilities and more space for patients, staff and volunteers. The new facility will also enable them to offer patients care and more options, depending on their interests and needs. “Staff and volunteers are very excited about working in this modern centre which will mean we can expand what we do, and when, in order to provide an excellent service for patients needing palliative care in the future. “The hospice provides nursing care services in the community, within people's homes, as wellas through the in-patient and day care facilities,” he said. All services are free of charge and the organisation relies on the genorisity of the general; public to

Naicker expressed concern with regard to the inability of the hospice not securing a site over the years and appealed to all role players come together and take the hospice to new heights. "Further efforts must be made to the municipality to secure a long term property for the establishment of a humanitarian centre." Home is where the healthy meal is >> Home is known to be where people feel most content, and the positive emotions often associated with homecooked meals may be part of the recipe for a healthy diet, a study shows

C

AN a cosy dining table and good music prompt people to reach for the greens and go light on dessert? So suggests a new study probing why people tend to eat more nutritious meals at home than away from home. The findings, based on data from 160 women who reported their emotional states before and after meals, add to mounting evidence that psychological factors may help override humans' wiredin prefer ence for highfat, sugary foods. "Over the course of evolution in a world of food scarcity, humans and animals alike have been biologi callyprogrammedtoelicitmorepowerfulfoodreward responses to highkilojoule foods" than to lessfat tening fare, the study notes. Given those hardwired urges, it may not be enough to understand that broccoli is better for the waistline than French fries. Home is known to be where people feel most content, and the positive emotions often associated with homecooked meals may be part of the recipe for a healthy diet, the researchers indicate. The findings, published in the issue of the Ameri can Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that people who are in a good mood at home tend to prepare healthier meals – and feel more emotionally reward ed after eating them. That cycle of positive reinforce ment was more pronounced at home than elsewhere. REPORT ON HOME COOKED MEAL The report, by Professor Ji Lu of Nova Scotia Agri cultural College, Catherine Huet, and Prof Laurette

Dubé of McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Man agement concludes that "the home is a privileged en vironment that nurtures healthy eating and in which healthier food choices trigger and are triggered by more positive emotions." This pattern may help explain why people make better choices at home than when eating out, says Professor Dubé, senior author of the study and scien tific director of the McGill World Platform for Health and Economic Convergence. One limitation of the study is that all 160 partici pants were nonobese, white Englishspeaking wom en. Samples that vary in sex and culture, as well as

samples that include children and obese populations, will be needed to demonstrate the extent to which the results can be generalised, the authors caution. Even so, the findings provide insights that point toward novel strategies to encourage healthy eating, they conclude. Such strategies could rely on factors such as "interpersonal communications, home design and atmospheric cues", including "music, dining land scape, and kitchen equipment, which have all been found to induce positive emotions in both everyday and laboratory contexts." DA launches manifesto

JYOTHI LALDAS THE local Democratic Alliance branch launched its manifesto recently. Launching their campaign slogan “To gether for change, together for jobs” for the 2014 election, they have received country wide support.

DA battle bakkie in KwaDukuza with Vincent Mhikze (Community Opera tions Manager), P Maduray (activist Darnall) and coun cillor Madhun Sing (constituency chair person and election campaign manager for iLembe Dis trict).

According to DA constituency chairperson Madhun Sing they are aiming to be together for change through a government that offers opportunities for all. “Together for jobs through an economy that grows at eight per cent to create six million real jobs. Cutting corruption and firing corrupt officials. Improve black eco nomic empowerment so that it rewards companies that invest in their workers and create jobs. “These are some of the issues contained in our mani festo and is receiving wide support across all communi ties.”

OW in its fourth generation, the well known Williams family of KwaDukuza is still making music and hitting all the right beats. It all started with world war veteran Alfred Edward Williams, the first drummer at the local methodist church in the 1950s and an incredible singer. Then came Bobby Williams, the 'Jim Reeves' of the region. Now it’s Enzo Vaughan Williams, who at the tender age of nine, has played drums at many conferences and events. He will now share the stage with international performer Danny Fisher of Scotland, the star of 'Come dine with me' Danielle Fisher and Enzo's dad, accomplished musician Paul Williams who is touring with many international artists for the past two decades. Enzo appears on stage as drummer for the new tribute concert 'Ebony and Ivory' at the Pumpkin Theatre in Ballito every Friday and Sunday.

Umhlali SAPS officers hand out Easter eggs.

DURING April 2013 Umhlali SAPS held an Easter Egg Drive and over 4 800 Easter eggs were collected for children in 12 under privileged schools in the Umhlali area. This year Umhlali SAPS hopes to reach even more children in time for Easter than the previously. Umhlali SAPS is requesting the public to sponsor Easter eggs or chocolate bunnies in order to make this event a success and to put a smile on a child’s face. They are aiming to give each child in 21 under-privileged schools the eggs or bunnies for Easter. The Easter eggs can be dropped off at Umhlali SAPS by 11 April at the station commander’s office. Distribution will be done on 16 and 17 April. If need be the station can also fetch Easter eggs. For more information contact Vinny Pillay on 073 3100 103 (Co-ordinator) or Nicole on 032 947 9900.

Shelley Buckle is also Miss Deaf South Africa 2011\2012.

M

ISS Ballito 2013 and Miss Deaf South Africa 2011\2012 Shelley Buckle says she fully supports the KwaZuluNatal Talk Sign cam paign. The project, initiated by the KZN Blind and Deaf society, seeks to popu larise South African Sign Language (SASL) and to raise funds through the sale of Talk Sign stickers. The proceeds will be used to edu cate people who are hearing impaired and, at a later stage, help them to find employment. Buckle says it is “about time” more awareness is created around sign lan guage. “I’m so excited about the project, it’s about time ‘hearing’ people are made aware of this beautiful lan guage! The money raised from this campaign will help educate and find employment for people who are deaf.” The 23yearold is gearing up for the Talk Sign Day on 14 March, which will serve to inform people further on the campaign. She also says sign language is not just useful for deaf people. “I’m going to try raise as much awareness about the campaign as possible. I really do think everyone should take the time to learn sign lan guage. It really does come in handy when you need to get that 'secret' message across to someone without anyone knowing. I also believe it will bring the deaf and hearing together,” she said. Buckle lives on the North Coast and works as a designer, marketer and web developer for Jeep Apparel. She was born partially deaf due to a CytoMegalo virus her mother had.

Havingovercomeherownstruggles challenges, Buckle strives to inspire others to achieve and live their dreams, no matter what their backgrounds are. She has been involved with a lot of charity work and fundraisers, such as the Reach for a Dream Foundation, the ZombieRunandanumberofconserva tion groups. According to the president of the KZNBlindandDeafSociety,JusticeZak Yacoob, itisahumanrightofeveryper son who is deaf to be able to under stand others and be understood. “We all need to communicate with each other. Imagine how lonely it must be when you don’t understand what the people around you are saying and, noone understands what you are try ing to say. “This is how people who are deaf feel around those who don’t under stand South African Sign Language (SASL),” explains Justice Yacoob. Schools and corporates are encour aged to buy Talk Sign stickers for R10 each and wear it on Talk Sign Day. As far as the Talk Sign Day activities are concerned, schools and business can be as creative as they like. Forexample, eachpupilcanpresent somethinginsignlanguagetotheclass and the corporates can distribute the 'Do's and Don'ts' when communicat ing with someone who is deaf to all their staff members. To place an order for stickers to sell at school or work or to set up a presen tation, contact Ellisha on 031 309 4991 or email ellisha@talk sign.co.za. SMS 'Talk Sign' and your city to 36931 at a cost of R5. All profits will be donated to the Talk Sign campaign. Please visit www.talksign.co.za for more information.

WEEKLY REPORTER ILEMBE trounced Chatsworth by 7-wickets in a KwaZulu Natal SubUnion Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Chatsworth openers, Prinesan Pillay and Tyron Ramchunder did well to overcome the early bowling onslaught by the hosts before posting an opening stand of 55-runs. Pillay (21) fell prey to a “softie” by Alveiro Nadasen in the 14th over, returning the simplest of catches to the witty bowler (Nadasen). Ramchunder (20) followed his opening partner to the dressing-room in the next over after being adjudged LBW to a Iqbal Sher delivery. After a brilliant start (55/1) by the openers, the wheels fell off the Chatsworth bus resulting in them being bowled out for 110 runs in the 36th over with none of the other batsmen recording double-digits. Sher (3/27 from 10 overs) and Nadasen (3/15 from 10 overs) were the destroyers-in-chief for the hosts claiming three wickets each in their 10-overs spell. Chasing 111 for victory (at a rate of 2,22 runs per over) Ilembe got off to a flyer with Steven Jacobs and Nadasen scoring at more than five runs per over before Jacobs (14) was caught at point by Direshin Govender off the bowling of Stanton Govender in the sixth over. Three overs later Nadasen (19) was clean bowled by Karthi Pillay. Yusuf Ismail and Desigan Pillay steadied the Ilembe innings, posting a valuable 55-runs partnership for the third wicket before Desigan (33) was caught by Daylan Padayachee off the bowling of Prinesan Pillay. Ismail (22 not out) and Preshen Rampersad (11 not out) guided Ilembe to an impressive 7-wickets victory in the 24th over. Early in the second half, Nkosinathi “Ndlebe” Mthembu intercepted a cross from Khulekhani Homo, heading power fully past the Townview keeper to give Tigers a 10 lead.
