HE iLembe District was a hive of activity last weekend as the 20 Years’ of Freedom and Democracy celebration took place with the Freedom Flame passing through as it travels across KwaZulu-Natal. During the celebrations the flame crossed from Mandeni to Ndwedwe with national, provincial and local government leaders joining communities in celebration of freedom from apartheid. On Friday, at the Freedom Flame handover by the uThungulu District Municipality to the provincial chairman of the ANC and KZN premier Senzo Mchunu, he reflected on how South Africa’s freedom and democracy was achieved and the progress the country has made. “The major symbol of our celebrations as the province of KwaZulu-Natal is the 20 years’ of Freedom Flame. “The Freedom Flame is crisscrossing the 11 districts highlighting the light over darkness that has prevailed in this province in the past 20 years,” said Mchunu. A series of activities, led by MECs and mayors of Mandeni, KwaDukuza, Maphumulo and Ndwedwe, took place over the weekend. The events included the launch of an electrification project in Gingind-

ple. When Senator Robert Kennedy defied [the] government to visit Luthuli in 1966 it resonated deeply in our country. “The words he spoke inspired a generation of Americans to ‘get active’ in ending the scourge of injustice in South Africa. I remember being a young activist and listening to Kennedy quote Pericles - ‘Athens may be great, but its glory is achieved by men who know their duty’,” said Gaspard. “His words about Luthuli and to the world at large formed a grounding place for freedom. We spoke about it so passionately. Freedom came off the backs of Luthuli’s sacrifices and that of his
family.ChiefLuthuliisasonofthissoil but he belongs to everyone. His legacy will continue to inspire the American people. “On behalf of my president and my people I am honoured to be here today,” said Gaspard. Public affairs officer for U.S. consulate general Najlaa Abdus-Samad said Gaspard has been in the country for six months, mainly in Pretoria, to observe the projects the embassy is working on. “The embassy has a special relationship with Luthuli Museum and they visit at least once a year. Chief Albert Luthuli, and thus the museum, is part of the legacy that encouraged Americans to help stand against apartheid,” she said.

New face for KwaDukuza
>> Town to receive a much-needed upgrade
K
WADUKUZA Municipality is on track to fulfilling its Vision 2030 programme launched in 2011. This was cited by KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu during a recent council briefing session. He was launching two key urban regeneration projects commissioned by the municipality to regenerate KwaDukuza. The municipality commissioned the planning exercise of a number of projects that were identified for development, including street lights installation and street regeneration. King Shaka Street, which cuts across the town, will be re-designed. Its black-top road is being resurfaced with additional paving, a storm-water
system and sidewalks. Street-lighting systems in the town will also be upgraded with light-emitting diode products as part of saving energy. The project is billed for completion in about seven months. Mthembu underlined that this is part of honouring KwaDukuza icons King Shaka, Chief Luthuli and Mahatma Gandhi. This comes two weeks after honoring Luthuli with a black-top road in Groutville. Mthembu said the municipality stands head and shoulders above other KZN municipalities as last year it was rated number one in terms of financial sustainability. “This is indeed a quantum leap forward in our road towards fulfilling
Vision2030,acitythatissettocompete in a global village in 16 years from now. This also serves as an indication of progress underlined in the National Development Plan which coincides with our vision billed for evaluation in 2030,” said Mthembu. He commended council members for being game-changers in entrenching ideas of infrastructure developments of the town, saying it is also part ofcelebratingthemilestoneof20years in a fledgling democracy as the country ushers in the third decade. Last week Mthembu said service delivery in KwaDukuza is in leaps and bounds after promising to install more than 500 street lights, from the leafy suburbs to deep rural zones.

Education for a better future JYOTHI LALDAS “THANK you for coming up with an idea that has changed the lives of the youth of the country. You have lifted us up and changed our lives for the better.” These words were said by student Sphamandla Mtshali, at the Lower Tugela Bulk Water Project (Plumbing) certification and induction ceremony held at Umfolozi FET Chief Albert Luthuli Campus recently. Mtshali was one of 37 students who had completed a threemonth training course in plumbing at the campus. The students were selected by their councillors from 27 wards in KwaDukuza through a partnership between Umfolozi College and iLembe. This is the second group of students to benefit from the programme. The first group of 38 youngsters graduated in August last year. fore there was a need for a programme like this. We are happy that we are here today reaping the fruits of hard work. We have reached more than 10 000 beneficiaries. “This is the last year we will be training students through the NSF students but hope we can train more. We have achieved a lot through hard work,” she said. She thanked the iLembe District, local municipalities and the companies for coming on board to assist in providing work placement for the students. Deputy mayor of the iLembe District Dolly Shandu emphasised that each person chooses what they want their future to look like. “Weallcomefromdifferentbackgrounds and face different circumstances which we have to accept. A bit about: Fascination or frustration?
NERESH GAYAPERSHAD SO much of our perspective and how we respond to the world around us relates to what we choose to think about. Recently I heard a phrase, the application of which is drastically changing my response to many situations. Over time, as this becomes my habit, it is going to help me with some behaviours I've wanted to change for
a long time. The phrase was, "Why not choose fascination rather than frustration?" I used to get frustrated much more often than I do now, because I've learnt that rather than choosing to be frustrated by a situation I can choose to be fascinated instead. I still get frustrated sometimes, but this mental shift made a positive impact on my life. We all get frustrated. Things don't go our way and we get frustrated. One of the early lessons we learn as children is that things don't always go the way you want. Our life experiences have confirmed this. We don't get the promotion, we don't like the way our boss talks to us, our car is making a funny noise, we can't find a parking space, our children are becoming rebellious, and the list continues to become endless. Our frustrations in life are big and small. In contrast, to be fascinated is to be captivated by some-
thing - to be interested. When we are interested in something we notice, we observe things. When we are fascinated by something we are drawn to learn from or about it - quite a different response from frustration and the places it can lead us. Itisinevitableinlifethatthings don't always go exactly the way we'd like. Typically people would then say that it is then inevitable that we will be frustrated. The frustration however, is not the situation itself, but a response or a choice. We have conditioned ourselves to choose frustration. We can also choose to be fascinated in these situations. Choosing frustration can lead to regret, anger, resentment and more. Choosing fascination can lead tounderstanding, knowledge, and improved results and relationships. The choice is mine. And the choice is yours.

Even though my parents could never afford to buy me an original Barbie, I was happy to take the castoffs from my slight of build and softly spoken male cousin. This meant you always came to me with freshly styled hair, additional blue eye-shadow and sequined outfits. In fact, for years I thought that you started your career as Transvestite Barbie™. In this, your 55th year, I am disgusted that you are still getting flak from feminists around the globe. They continue to raise their meaty arms, exposing their unshaven pits and belch terms like ‘unrealistic female role-models’. I approach their scorn as any woman who has grown up on a healthy dose of PVC does: by begging them to wax their upper-lips and watch Twilight. I have always considered you a wonderfully healthy role model. I have taken through my life the knowledge that there is nothing that a good binge-andpurge session or buying a new outfit can’t solve, although they should ideally not be done

HE informal taxi rank next to the Lifestyle Centre finally moved to the new temporary site next to the Sangweni Tourism Centre yesterday (Tuesday 8 April). The move was delayed despite the deadline given to the KwaDukuza Municipality civil department last Friday. The rank is being moved allowing the widening of the P445 to continue next to Lifestyle, a decision taken at a recent council meeting. The temporary site is owned by the municipality. The council report stated that failure to decisively resolve the matter of a temporary rank would result in the contractor making financial claims on the municipality for “standing time”. The civil department was tasked with putting crusher on the site before taxis started to use it to prevent the grass and sand turning to mud. Ward six councillor Colin Marsh said the site is expected to be used for at least six months, until September or October, before a permanent rank is built. “We are hoping the permanent site will be completed before the December holiday season,” he said. Dolphin Coast Taxi Association member Dan Maharaj said although they had agreed with the municipality to move temporarily, they have some concerns about the site. Taxis will have to go around the small circle next to the Junction Centre to access the new rank. “In the short-term it is okay, but we are still worried about the high traffic volume in this area. We just hope there aren’t any accidents, as the roads and circles are very narrow. “We did ask for one of the lanes next to the

The report states that Shell will sell the land to IRC, which will then donate about 5 000 m2 to the municipality. “The executive committee is well aware of the challenges relating to public transport facilities in Ballito,” said Khanyile in the report. “Although negotiations are progressing, the pace has been slow in terms of the decision making.” This is due to the fact that Shell must refer suchissuesandinitiativeswiththeirboardofdirectors in London. Including the taxi rank, the construction of the Greenfields intersection and transport facility will cost about R5 500 000. IRC propose to assist with finance. The report states IRC has made an official offer on the land. “As soon as the two parties concerned reach an agreement on the transaction, KDM and IRC will finalise the donation agreement,” said Khanyile.

vendree. Once again the service was excellent and the establishAST year I discovered A Touch of Class, a beauty and menthasmaintaineditsglamorousyetcomfortableandluxurious reputation. For those out there who are clean freaks slimming clinic, in the comfort of our locality. Interestingly enough, in terms of Section 67 BIS of like me, you can rest assure that hygiene is of utmost importhe Natal Town Planning Ordinance No.27 of 1949 A Touch tance at the spa. The towels are changed after every treatment and the of Class is the only beauty salon that has been granted permission and the necessary consent to trade in the area by beds and equipment are sanitised. Visiting the spa, one can expect a welcoming atmosphere the KwaDukuza Municipality. This week I was invited to visit once again and as always and service with a smile. A facial room, a massage room, I was not disappointed. The spa is managed by Shabrina Be- two nail stations, a separate pedicure chair with a foot spa desi (083 336 0609 or 032 551 4471) who is qualified as a and a waiting area prettily wrapped in vibrant colours set beauty therapist and this shows in the quality of treatment the tone for an indulgent time. Beginning the facial, the therapist took us through the at the establishment. My friend Lilyan and I were treated to facials and mani- process and the relevance of each part of the treatment becures in the pristine mini spa by therapist extrodinare De- fore commencing. The product used for the facials and massages is call Six Sensational Skincare which has been formulated in some of the most prestigious and successful salons and spas inthecountrytodelivertheidealbalancebetween science and nature. And for us lay people, lets just say it's pretty good stuff, affordable, indulgent and perfectly balanced. The treatment combines a pampering technical facial with relaxation rituals coming full circle to draw in all six human senses, sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing and proprioception (individual perception – the sense of the brain). As a perfect number, six is related to purity, harmony, balance and the ultimate nurturer. Each step involved relaxation and treatment preformed excellently in total silence, making it a triple threat. They even let you chooseasoymassagecandlespecifictoyour mood at the time which is not only burned during the treatment but also used to perform a mini massage. Over and above this, we received professional manicures complete with a soak, exYou are invited to watch foliation and OPI polish. Another specialty, which I will most defia MUSICAL SENSATION... nitely be trying on my next visit to the spa, is the hot stone full body massage which combines the warmth of heated basalt stones and manual massage. As we walked out of the spa Lilyan and I were chatting and she told me she would definitely be back and I understand why. Devendree, who I believe is a magician, took my friend and I through the processes, her friendly disposition definitely added to the overall experience. ARLY Childhood Development sets the foundation for a child’s education, holistic development and how they enter their future. Tree and The Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism formulated a strategy and implementation plan to improve the holistic development of children and to uplift the Ilembe community with the focus on the KwaDukuza area. Recently a team of 21 ladies from the crèche, which will be part of the development programme, spent a day at Tree to begin training that will make a tangible difference for the children’s education in each of the 21 crèches. Using recycled material each lady was taught how to make different play resources that can be used as teaching aids and as toys. This training taught the teachers to always have creative and imagination building recourses for their crèches. There's a special Angel in Heaven There's a special angel in Heaven that is a part of me, It is not where I wanted her to be but where God wanted her to be. She was here but just a moment like a nighttime shooting star. And though she is in Heaven she isn't very far. She touched the hearts of many like only an angel can do. I would've held her every minute if the end I only knew. So send this special message to Heaven up above. Please take care of my angel God and send her all my love.

Today you would have been 73 years young. It’s hard to believe that it has been only 12 months since you left us and even harder not to plan a birthday Mrs. Selvie supper or celebration in honour of Mannery you as we do each year. But today, I celebrate your life and the memories that you have created for us. To remember your voice as you spoke to me about so much. Always advising, always giving love and support and encouragement. Your birthdays were something special to all of us, something to be planned for weeks before and celebrated and cherished on that day. For we were always so grateful to GOD for giving us another year with you. Another year for us to enjoy having a mother who has showed us so much courage, determination, unconditional love and devotion. This year your birthday will be spent remembering all that you did for us and those special birthdays past. This year on your birthday our promise to you is that we live our lives with the same courage, strength, dedication and love that you have given us. Happy Heavenly Birthday Ma We love you. Always missed by your loving children and grandchildren.
With love from mum, Joy, sister Darshini and a host of family and friends

Singh drew first blood in the semis winning the opening set, but Govender clawed his way back into contention, winning the 2nd set to level the scores at 1-1. Beez blown away by Tornado WEEKLY REPORTER BEEZ were blown away (5-3) by Tornado Football Club in a Safa KwaDukuza Local Football Association First Division League game played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. Tornado led 2-0 at half-time and fans expected the floodgates to open, but Beez did well to go into the break with the scores locked at 2-2 before conceding two late goals which resulted in their 5-3 demise. Cebo Mthiyane chested Blessing Msimango’s cross before volleying the ball into the top-right hand corner to give Tornado a 1-0 in the 8th minute. Siyabonga Fekayi doubled Tornado’s advantage five minutes later after heading Msimango’s cross powerfully past the hapless Beez keeper.
Trailing 2-0, Beez adopted a new gameplan and threw men forward in the hope of reducing the deficit. They were duly rewarded in the 20th minute after Cebonkolesi Njapha latched onto Mkhuluse Nxumalo’s cross from the right flank to make the score 2-1. The Tornado lads were holding their heads in disbelief after David Ndlovu scored a brilliant equaliser (2-2) from close range just before the break. Tornado came back strongly at the start of the second half and quickly restored their lead (3-2) after Msimango blasted the ball from just outside the box into the roof of the net. Their joy was shortlived after Ndlovu lobbed the ball over the advancing Tornado keeper to make the score 3-3. With barely 10 minutes remaining, fans anticipated a drab 3-3 draw, but man-of-
the-match Nkanyiso Mkhize notched up a late brace to give Tornado a well deserve 5-3 win. In an earlier game Townview scraped to a hard-fought 2-1 win against Cobra. Tigers were mauled 3-1 by Ex-Lucky Stars. Rocky Park United cemented their position at the summit of the KLFA Division One League table after trouncing Monza 4-2 at the Recreation Ground.
