KwaDukuza taxi violence spiralling out of control >> Taxi operator and a woman most recent victims in spate of violence

A

TAXI operator was shot and killed in Glendale and a woman was shot and injured after being caught in the crossfire of violence between rival taxi associations which began last week in KwaDukuza.

On Friday morning, Mape Ngcobo, believed to be part of the Maphumulo Taxi Association, was shot dead outside his Glendale home.

The shooting, which apparently involved security companies contracted to the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo associations, is believed to be related to the ongoing taxi feud between the associations.

According to witnesses the shooting forced a number of business owners to close their doors for fear of their safety as commuters ran to take cover.

Commuter Abigail Ngcobo said she was walking near the U-Save Supermarket when she heard gunshots.

“A BMW with NRB registration plates was parked opposite the rank and five people were shooting from the car.

“We were so scared because it came out of nowhere. Now, we have been told that taxis are hiding all over the CBD so we are not safe anywhere.”

Since the rank shooting a heavy police presence has been maintained and no further incidents of violence have been reported.

In another incident, the Durban Northpolicearrestedamanfollowing a taxi-related shootout last Monday night in the area.

Maphumulo, the Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuza Taxi Associations since last year.

Sizwe Zubane from the Maphumulo Taxi Association accused the KwaDukuza Taxi Association of Ngcobo’s murder.

However, KwaDukuza Taxi Association deputy chairman Bongizwe Mhlongo denied KwaDukuza’s involvement in the attack.

He said members of the Maphumulo association are dealing with infighting and blaming KwaDukuza for “their own actions”.

“We have already heard about their internal feud. We have nothing to do with it,” Mhlongo said.

The violence continued on Friday morning when the 23-year-old woman was shot and injured at the KwaDukuza taxi rank.

“We checked ownership of the vehicle and found it was registered to a person in the South Coast. He was contacted, but he confirmed that his vehicle was not stolen and still in his possession. On checking the vehicle’s VIN it was established that the number plates and licence disk had been cloned.

“Further investigation established that the vehicle the suspects used had been stolen on Saturday from North Beach,” Powell said.

The MEC sent a team from the depart­ ment to engage the associations and at­ tempt to stop the conflict.

“I will be meeting the leadership of both associations urgently to resolve the issues of conflict.

“As the KwaZulu­Natal province, we have made significant strides in stabilising thetaxiindustry.Wewillnotallowanyinci­ dent such as the latest shooting in KwaDu­ kuza to undermine our good work of the past five years,” said Mchunu.

Defending Zuma’s dignity >> Supporters march to show support for president following the Nkandla report MERVYN KRISHNA

HOUSANDS of supporters from the South African Communist Party (SACP), the SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco), the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the ANC marched through the streets of KwaDukuza on Saturday to “defend the dignity” of President Jacob Zuma.

The march began at Shoprite and ended at the KwaDukuza Country Club grounds where a

memorandum of grievances was handed to KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu by the SACP deputy national chairperson, Thulasi Nxesi, the SACP provincial secretary, Themba Mthembu and the ANC provincial deputy chairperson, Willies Mchunu.

The memorandum contained a list of grievances from the alliance directed at the Department of Justice.

The SACP says it is “extremely concerned” at the manner in which Public Protector Thuli Madonsela

handled her investigation into upgrades at Zuma’s private residence at Nkandla.

Nxesi said the use of the media to leak the earlier report, and the habit of making comments on an incomplete process, have all negatively affected and unnecessarily cast aspersions on Zuma.

The SACP also questioned the presence of the media at the release of the report in Pretoria, as well as the timing of the release.

“The media was ‘locked up’ in a board room for about three hours

to go through the final report prior to its release via a press conference, while the affected persons were never given such adequate opportunity.

“The Public Protector does not report to the media, but to Parliament, and therefore her mediadriven strategy is seriously flawed and shows a complete misunderstanding of the office of the public protector.” said Nxesi.

The memorandum calls for the “abuses of power and the leaks” from Madonsela’s office to be inves-

tigated and addressed decisively.

The SACP said crucial observations in the report included that the president had never requested security valuations and upgrades by the state on his Nkandla residence in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The president never misled Parliament when he said that the state never built his and any of his family members any house, and that his family is responsible for payment of all the houses they built for themselves at his residence,” he said.

ACDP leader to visit Ballito >> Party president promotes biblical­based policies

FRICAN Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) president, Reverend Kenneth Meshoe, will be visiting Ballito on Friday the 25 April at Lighthouse Family Church for a public meeting.

TheACDPwasfoundedin1993.Itsmembers consists mainly of conservative Christians.

The party currently has three seats in parliament, but expects its seats will increase after the 2014 elections.

Local ACDP councillor, Reverend Nel Sewraj says he is positive about the future.

The ACDP has biblically-based policies for reconciliation, justice, compassion, tolerance, peace and the sanctity of life, the individual, the

family and the community.

The party also came into the limelight through its 2000 manifesto which opposed the promotion of condoms and safe sex as a way of preventing HIV transmission.

The manifesto read: “The ACDP feels strongly that the condom campaign must be abandoned and that abstinence and faithfulness in marriage must be promoted.”

Meshoe is a visionary and leader who started out as a teacher before embarking on a successful career as a Christian minister and political leader.

OU! Yes, you, gentle reader, can be all you ever wanted to be and have all you have ever desired. Can I get a YES? Sound familiar? It should. It’s the gen­ eral mantra ­ in one form or another ­ that is ejaculated by self­proclaimed motiva­ tional speakers on a near daily basis at seminars,webinars,through podcastsand in gazillions of books, leaflets and self­ published e­books.

Ihavetouchedonthemulti­billion dol­ lar self­help industry before, briefly, but for purposes of today’s rant, I have chosen to focus on The Motivational Speaker, that ubiquitous creature that has nested in government,theprivatesector,education­ al institutions and media and continues to empty its bowels on our heads in order to offer inspiration.

It is the message flowing from The Mo­ tivational Speaker, life coach and consul­ tant, under the self­help umbrella, that society today is being encouraged to em­ brace as if it were a cuddly bunny hopping through green pastures, spreading love, peace and fortune with its magic bunny wand.

The purpose of The Motivational Speaker, we are told, is to motivate people.

We will agree that this is not rocket sci­ ence, for which, incidentally, one actually needs talent.

Granted, it would be unfair to paint all withthisbrush,soletussticktotheunscru­ pulous few who make money by telling us that we simply aren’t good enough, and that for X amount, we can be so much better.

Today’s motivational speaker, if he or she has reached the pinnacle of his or her game, is possibly a wily creature who knows that money can be made and glory attained by sexing­up common sense.

Pepper this sexed­up common sense with a concocted call for humility, together with a non­offensive moral stance, and you have corporate clowns and wannabe

success­stories everywhere sprinting to harness the mysteries of the universe in an effort to get richer, faster, stronger, bet­ ter…or finally have someone kiss their arse for a change.

For those of you born circa 1980, com­ mon sense is a rare quality that you proba­ bly lack. Fortunately, the blame cannot entirely be placed on your brilliant young shoulders; given that you are being force­ fed a steady stream of excrement from previous generations who are not quite motivated enough to face their own fail­ ures. You have now become our path to redemption, or so you keep on telling us.

It is on the Internet where we will find a seemingly endless stream of gushing about motivational speaking (close on 11 million, actually) which appears to be the

choice career for those who excel in public speaking and not much else.

Sadly, this does not perturb many, who are so desperately seeking some unattain­ able form of hope and acceptance that theyarewillingtolistentooratorswithlim­ ited life experience when it comes to things like love, happiness and money.

Now, common sense tells us that com­ mon sense is lacking if we are happy to fork out large amounts of money to learn how tosavemoney.Commonsensetellsusthat if we want to save money at the end of each month, we need to spend less throughout the month.

Common sense tells us that if we want to lose weight, we should eat right and move more. That a simple concept such as saving money or losing weight – both

big on the agenda of The Motivational Speaker ­ can lead to a 200 page best sell­ er, should be enough to elicit a face­palm reaction from most of us.

Common sense tells us that if we have a book­shelf that resembles an orgy of self­help literature, we are either not will­ ing to put the message into action or the message is crap.

Andfinally,commonsensetellsus that being more intelligent, more beautiful, more personally and professionally ac­ cepted, richer, stronger or faster will not necessarily mean we are happy. Happi­ ness cannot be taught in 10 easy steps; it is a fickle emotion that flows and ebbs with circumstance. Contentment, on the other hand, is something altogether achievable.

I will then eagerly divulge ­ using perfect pitch and appropriate amounts of facial animation ­ how to capture the cuddly bunny of success, hopping through green pastures, spreading love, peace and for­ tune with its magic bunny wand.

KwaDukuza deputy mayor Dolly Govender and executive councillor Sundeep Oudhram gave their full support to the women which will be launched in the near future.

Govender congratulated the women who are considering joining the circle to make a difference in the community and urged them to play a pivotal.

Oudhram said he was confident that the women’s circle will make a difference in the lives of many in the area and have them his full support.

Ramnath to make Two Oceans Marathon debut WEEKLY REPORTER JAY Ramnath of KwaDukuza Athletic Club (KDAC) is looking forward to attempting his first Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town on Easter Sunday.

In an interview with Ramnath a week before the race, he said: “Two years ago I made my first visit to the Mother City and whilst travelling up Chapman’s Peak I vowed to tackle the Two Oceans Marathon someday.

“I least expected that day would come so soon, but despite being the only KDAC participant in the race I am looking forward to running the 56km race on Easter Saturday”.

Ramnath started running at the beginning of 2013 and tackled his first Comrades Marathon last year from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. With more than 10 000 athletes bailing out of the race last year, including a large numberofhisclubmates,Ramnathperseveredand crossed the finish line in Pietermaritzburg in a time of 11:50 (making the cut-off time by 10 minutes).

He will be hoping to use the Two Oceans Marathon in preparation for his second Comrades Marathon on 1 June from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

President of KDAC, Chander “Zoo” Gungadeen congratulated Ramnath for tackling the world’s most beautiful race, Two Oceans Marathon and wished him every success in his endeavours on Saturday.

Gungadeen also heaped praise upon longstanding member Das Harilal for participating in the Mahatma Gandhi Salt March themed “I support active non-violence-it results in lasting solution” on 6 April.

The Salt March symbolized Gandhi’s defianceoftheSaltTaximposedbytheBritishcolonialists. Gandhi spent 21 years of his life in South Africa.

The march also celebrates the 10th clause of the Freedom Charter to maintain peace and friendship as espoused by leaders such as Chief Albert Luthuli In other KDAC news, members are reminded about the change of times for the time trials.

Runners will start at 5.00pm and walkers at 5.15pm from the Manor Car Park and heading into Stock Road. All participants are requested to train in reflective colours and run/walk in groups as a safety measure.

A panel van with seats perhaps MARCEL UPFOLD FIRST IMPRESSIONS hen I requested a ride in the NV200, I was informed that it is a very popular vehicle and that the journalists are queueing for a ride. My common sense told me that due to this, the NV200 should offer an above average experience.

Seeing the NV200 for the first time I was quite impressed with the sloping front end. The lines followed an angled line end­ ing in the squarish rear compartment. At thebackisahugedoor,makingtheloading of goods an easy task. It would appear as if the sloped front end contributes greatly to the handling of the NV200 when riding into strong winds.

The interior is functional and straight forward ­ no fancy extras. The NV200 boasts an amount of space which one would only expect from larger vehicles.

With the rear seats folded up there is an impressive2.3cu.mspace.Withthemiddle row folded down the space is an enormous 3.1 cubic metres.

With the large sliding doors on the side, access is not a problem for the middle row.

Getting into the rear seats is a bit tight for larger people. Up front, the driver’s seat could have a bit more rearward slide space.

From the side it appears as of the wheels are a touch too small. In my opinion a 15” wheel might fit better. With the extra two seats folded down, there is enough space for seven people.

THE RIDE TheNV200hadnoproblemgettingun­ der way. However, after loading some pas­ sengers in the NV200 was sluggish on the torque. However, once the revs got beyond 4000 the torque kicked in and it was bet­ ter.

It hit the NV200 diagonally from the left front and it was a bit like riding a bal­ loon on water.

The effect of the wind on the NV200 was apparent.

I LIKE The two rear seats are definitely more spacious and comfortable than some of the other 7­seaters on the market.

The turning circle is in fact a bit “scary”.

I was very impressed with this fact. One

in on the left hand side (pavement side), this is a bit awkward.

Thefrontdoorwindowwindingmecha­ nisms are placed at an awkward height, specifically on the driver’s side. It tends to “gnaw” at your knee whilst driving and it is difficult to have your leg in another posi­ tion to avoid this.

VERDICT The NV200, to my mind, does have a place in the market. Why else would it be marketed?

As a panel van with its large loading space and the low loading height it should makethetransportingofgoodsapleasure.

However in the combi version I get the feel­ ingthatitistheresultofusingabasicpanel van and then added some padding, seats and windows.

It is as if there was no thorough thought process was undertaken during the interior design, resulting in the shortcomings men­ tioned above.

In my opinion the NV200 would be a handy mom’s taxi once the problem areas could be solved.

Butbythesametoken,bartheseissues, it is a nice fellow to drive. Personally I do not have a requirement for a combi, but you’ll have the final verdict after a test drive.

Once again my personal opinion is that a 15” wheel could make the driving experi­ ence better and more stable, specifically with windy conditions from the side or front.

Although the air conditioning works well it is not delivering enough air to the rear passengers mainly as there are no air vents feeding the rear of the cabin.

Therearenohandlestoholdontowhen gettinginoroutoftheNV200inthemiddle or rear rows of seats.

The passengers which I had for this test noted this immediately. This would further help to hold onto when driving on bumpy and winding roads.

The split of the middle seats is a 2/3 fromtheleftsideand1/3fromtheright.Per­ haps this should be the other way round.

When you have three people in the middle row and somebody needs to get out or in at the back, then either the right hand mid­ dlerowpassengerhastogetoutorboththe left hand and middle passengers on the left side must get out to allow the seat to fold down.

AGNUM Cricket Club were blown out of the Warriors Sport-sponsored Twenty-20 Knockout Cup (hosted by Ilembe Cricket Union) after suffering an agonising 2-runs defeat at the hands of overwhelming favourites Morningside at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday.
