According to witnesses the shooting forced a number of business owners to close their doors for fear of their safety as commuters ran to take cover. Commuter Abigail Ngcobo said she was walking near the U-Save Supermarket when she heard gunshots. “A BMW with NRB registration plates was parked opposite the rank and five people were shooting from the car. “We were so scared because it came out of nowhere. Now, we have been told that taxis are hiding all over the CBD so we are not safe anywhere.” Since the rank shooting a heavy police presence has been maintained and no further incidents of violence have been reported. Maphumulo, the Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuza Taxi Associations since last year. Sizwe Zubane from the Maphumulo Taxi Association accused the KwaDukuza Taxi Association of Ngcobo’s murder. However, KwaDukuza Taxi Association deputy chairman Bongizwe Mhlongo denied KwaDukuza’s involvement in the attack. He said members of the Maphumulo association are dealing with infighting and blaming KwaDukuza for “their own actions”. “We have already heard about their internal feud. We have nothing to do with it,” Mhlongo said. The violence continued on Friday morning when the 23-year-old woman was shot and injured at the KwaDukuza taxi rank.
