velopment - a significant milestone in the construction of one of KwaDukuza’s biggest housing development projects. The units, which vary from one to three bedrooms, consist of a fully-fitted kitchen, built-in cupboards and tiled floors. The environmentally-friendly development, which is situated between Glenhills and Newtown, will eventually boast 776 units whichcomprise lowincome, community rental and affordable units. A number of these units are still being constructed. The project is piloted by the KwaZulu-Natal department of humansettlementsandispartofgovernment’s undertaking to provide low income citizens with decent homes. Speaking to the Weekly, Oudhram said: “We are so excited about this project as it will provide houses to so many families in one of the firstintegratedhousingprojectsin the iLembe District. “Home ownership is one of the most significant economic achievements for an individual and this development is making it a reality for many,” he said. An excited Adam Sheik said he will now have an easier life in his new home. “It is comfortable and I will not have to worry about storm damage and demanding landlords. I am so happy to have this home. Thank you to all who have helped us get here.” Mthembu said KwaDukuza is moving forward after welcoming the first 24 beneficiaries in government’s improved housing rental stock, the integrated residential development units. ‘Weareindeedmovingforward

We have expressed time and again, our approach in developing decent human settlements. “Locally, this clearly indicates thecommitmentswemadefollowing our 2012 Human Settlements Summit which again serves to underline our approach to priorities that have been mapped out by national government,” said the mayor. Last year, the department launchedits15-yearhousingrental strategy in the interest of mapping out reasonable rental methods to cater for people from different walks of life. Earlier this month Mthembu joined the people in the rural community of Thembeni, to deliver 1980 RDP homes. Attention for special projects WEEKLY REPORTER KNOW your human rights - this was the message at iLembe District Municipality Special Projects Unit’s workshop held recently. The workshop targeted special projects co-ordinators dealing with women, children, disabilities, senior citizens and Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) from the iLembe local municipalities, NGOs and other spheres of government.

Hlomendlini residents protested outside the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court last week.

This workshop was a follow up to a provincial meeting for the special projects officials held in Pietermaritzburg last month where a resolution was taken for all special projects focal persons be trained on their roles and special programmes implementation strategy. Human rights manager from the Office of the Premier’s Human Rights Chief Directorate Bheki Mkhize highlighted the importance of understandingone’srightsandresponsibil-

ities. “It is disappointing to see that people only remember their rights when they are in trouble,” he said. Mkhize said the only way humanity could be brought back is if we all startbylookingatapersonnexttoyou as a human being. He explained the importance of upholding fundamental rights and what these rights should mean to individuals. “Helping an old lady get her pension or a child get their certificate is not about money or a document. It is about giving that person their dignity back and making them feel how nice it is to live in a democratic state like

ours,” he said. According to Lindiwe Zondo, the deputy manager of senior citizens in the Office of the Premier’s Human Rights Chief Directorate, the biggest challenge is the shortage of old age homes. “There is definitely a need for one in KwaDukuza and that is currently being discussed at provincial level in the legislature and a report will be released soon,” she said. Zondo said another biggest problem for the province is that older citizens don’t want to leave their villages or homes. South African Social Security Au-

thority manager in the iLembe District Municipality V Bulunga gave a run-down on the functionality of Sukuma Sakhe in the region indicating its successes and challenges since its inception. Bulunga encouraged NGOs attending to know their war rooms and to be part of them. “A war room is the only place where you will find the ward councillor, government department officials and community members all in one room at the same time. “Use this opportunity so that your cases can be dealt with efficiently,” he said.

Mayor calls for law and order WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has issued a warning of visible and non-visible policing operations in KwaDukuza. This comes after numerous complaints by members of the community regarding the escalating crime in the area. Mthembu has now deployed a task team made up of

members from the KwaDukuza Community Safety Unit and the South African Police Services to conduct swoop operations. He has sent out a warning that the task team will “do battle with criminals” and “law enforcement agencies will catch up with them if they continue to undermine the law”. “Crime breeds crime, let law and order be enforced. We cannot allow KwaDukuza to be turned into a breeding ground for violence and crime. It is sickening that these criminals who are now a law unto themselves, compromise our fledgling economy as they only recognise the law of the jungle as a way to sustain themselves,” said Mthembu. He added this has a bad consequence as it bearsthepotentialtoturnawayprospectiveinvestors from the town. “We will be watching crime trends very closely and also run vigorous campaigns in a bid to stamp-out criminals in our society. Law breakers will be called to account for their scandalous deeds aimed at discrediting the amount of freedom we have gain in 20 years of democracy,” said Mthembu.

Sometimes

Let’s share the cake of equity fairly

it really is that easy! HUMAN BEINGS ARE GENERALLY VERY HELPFUL AND CONSIDERATE acter, mothers and fathers treating their children with dignity and respect, successful people sharing credit with others who contributed to their success, "famous" people showing humility, researchers devoting their time and energy to developing products and medicines that will serve humankind the list could be endless - I realise that there are far more people working to contribute to the goodness in the world than there are trying to harm the world and the people in it. In theory, of course, I don't need to witness any of these things to know in my heart that human beings are basically good, caring, and compassionate. But it seems that many peopleareafraidtoshowthat side of them, so sometimes it's nice to be reminded that this world basically is a very good, very positive place to live. And the people who are here with us want to contribute to the positive side of life - evenifallofthemaren'table to do so because of their fears

onthebeachandyounotice acouple carrying a garbage bag because they are picking up litter, you see the goodness in other people, and you feel positive about life. When I see someone compliment another person for no obvious reason, then it's easy for me to see that human beings are generally very helpful and considerate - whether we always show it or not. WhenIreadaboutlawyerstakingon pro bono cases, or doctors and dentists performing surgery for people who need it but can't afford it, or businesses donating their time, money and resources to help those who are less privileged than they are, then it's easy to believethatthereishopeforabetterworld - one that we're hopefully working towards everyday. When I see kids sharing, athletes demonstrating good sportsmanship, students acting with integrity and char-

Their example makes me want to emulate them, and it then becomes even easier for me to contribute to life positively. So, let us continue to set our fears and insecurities aside today, so that we can be able to see the goodness that is being contributed to this world, and eventually become 'major' contributors ourselves!

AS a member of the ANC Tugela branch, I visited Indian and Coloured families to canvass their votes for the ANC. Their response was, why should we vote for the ANC whilst they are proposing the new equity bill which is discriminating. Nelson Mandela made it clear that Coloureds and Indians were ‘black’ and should benefit from affirmative action. Today Labour Minister Mildred Oil fant proposes a bill to further under mining these communities. These communities are unhappy with the criteria used to determine their percentage of demographics on equity which is on a national base, they feel it should be determined on a regional basis. The new proposed equity bill needs to be set aside. Minister Olifant lacks the foresight to introduce such a bill at a time when the national elec tions are taking place on 7 May. Indians and Coloureds had a raw deal under apartheid, they expect better now. President Jacob Zuma needs to takecognisanceofthefeelingofthese communities and win back their sup port otherwise the opposition is going tohaveafielddaycapitalisingontheir grievances. MERVYN KRISHNA DOLPHIN Coast Landfill management (DCLM) has shown great commitment to the conservation of the environment. On Wednesday DCLM was awarded a certificate of appreciation from KZN Wild life for its contribution towards the fight

DCLM partners KZN Wildlife against rhino poaching. This was an acknowledgment of part nership through a DCLMbranded Ford Ranger vehicle donated by DCLM to sup port the fight against rhino poaching. The certificate handover was accom panied by a presentation by KZN Wildlife highlighting the significant role played by the vehicle which played a huge role in arresting perpetrators of the escalating rate of rhino poaching in South Africa. DCLM has extended its partnership

DCLM general manager, Hannes Joubert said they are proud to be associat ed with KZN Wildlife. “We also thank them for giving us the opportunity to be part of the fight against rhino poaching. “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,” said Joubert.
