HE Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) overturned the murder conviction of KwaDukuza resident Nishen Ramkisson, who is serving a 15-yearprison sentence for his role in the murder if his uncle Jairam Ramkisson in June 2006, on Tuesday. The SCA has set aside Nishen’s conviction for murder as the judge said he may have been embroiled in the rivalry between the two families. “While there may be suspicion that he was in cahoots with his parents, he cannot be convicted on suspicion alone,” said the judge.

HE Maphumulo Taxi Association does not have authority to operate on the Darnall to Stanger route, transport MEC Willies Mchunu said on Thursday at the KwaDukuza council chambers. Speaking at the emergency meeting with KwaDukuza Municipality councillors, Mchunu said the departmenthadreachedthefinaldecisionon the matter and hoped that this would result in an end to the taxi violence in the area. “After looking at all documentation and following thorough process, we have concluded that Maphumulo and its members have to stop operating the contested route of Darnall,” Mchunu said in a statement. This decision was reached after thorough consultations with all affected parties including the legal representatives of members of Maphumulo that illegally operated the contested route. His department had further plans to restore normality in taxi operations in the area. Mchunu met the Maphumulo and KwaDukuza Taxi associations where he informed them of his final decision over the contested route. The Maphumulo Association was notpleasedwiththedecision,Mchunu

A NTIBIOTICS: ANTIBIOTICS: What you need to know AN antibiotic is an agent that either kills or inhibits (halts) the growth of a microorganism. Most people, duringthecourse oftheirlives, havetakenoneormore courses of antibiotics. One of the first antibiotics, cre ated by Alexander Fleming, was Penicillin. Today, we havehundredsofdifferenttypesof antibiotics.Antibi otics are grouped into different classes, each class possessing a different mechanism of action. Some of the classes, to name a few, include: Penicillins Cephalosporins Polymxins

Conditions of neutropaenia (eg: cancer related) Route of administration: Antibioticscanbegivenorally(tablet/syrup), intra venous (via a drip, in more serious infections). Some an tibioticscanbe giventopically, intheformofointments, eye drops, ear drops. The route of administration de pends on the site and severity, and your family physician or specialistwilldecideonthebest, mosteffectiveroute. Principles/rules of antibiotic use Try not to use too many of them. Your physician will prescribe antibiotics only if he/she feelsthattheillnessyouarepresentingwith, willbene fitfroma courseofan tibiotics. After com pleting a course of an tibiotics, your physician may opt to perform certain inves tigations, before com mencing a second course of antibiotics Hope for the Children for the same initial symptoms. Choice of antibiotic Appropriate choice is based on the location and severity of your in fection, eg: the antibi oticchoiceforabacteri al meningitiswillbedif ferent from that of a simple communityac quired pneumonia. Correct dosing This is important in children, where the Date: 03/05/14 dosingdependsheavi Venue: Mdoniville ly on the weight of the Community hall child. Duration of treatment Most antibiotics are prescribed for a duration of five days, however, based on the symptoms you present with, this can range from three days, up to 1014days. Physician prescribed ALWAYS seek the opinion of your family practitioner / specialist before the initiation of an antibiotic. Anti biotics carry substantial risk, and must be prescribed by your doctor. Never initiate a course of antibiotics obtained overthecounter. Your family practitioner hasinformation providedbyMicrobiologists(fromthe leading Pathology Laboratories), and can make the decision to start a specific class of antibiotic based on this information, together with your symptoms. Inap propriate and widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of antibioticresistant bacteria, which has now led to numerous health organisations lobbying against its liberal use. In KZN and South Afri ca, there are numerous Specialist organisations in volved in the “ANTIBIOTIC STEWARDSHIP PRO GRAM”, aimed at eliminating the unnecessary use of antibiotics. Drug-drug interactions The common interactions are seen with the birth control pill, as well as alcohol. Physicians, in current practise, are limiting the number of different medica tions given, in the attempt to minimise these drug drug interactions. Drugdrug interactions reduce the effectofeach individualmedicationused, andincreas es the sideeffects that a person experiences Side effects All medication have sideeffects, and antibiotics are not without its range of sideeffects. These range from mild to very serious. These includ : Nausea and vomiting (common) Gastritis / Diarrhoea Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) Vaginal candidiasis Always ask your physician about the antibiotic that he/she intends on prescribing, and make an informed decision on the use of it. Living life for others >> Etete resident is the heart of her community

“T

HE people laugh with us, cry with us, get better from sickness, or pass away. We see all the Etete community’s troubles - and joys,” says Summerhill House’s Esther Lynn. Lynn, affectionately known by most as “Gogo”, is a muchloved Etete resident and an integral member of the Summerhill House nonprofit organisation team. Many lives have been made brighter by her kindness and generosity, on her own account and through the NPO. Shecooksforandfeeds the people. She teachessometosewandsell their work. She helps them get birth certificates and ID documents so they can work or obtain grants. She also takes time to pray with those who are inconsolable. numerous others. “I have always loved children, and so many of them in the community do not have enough to eat and are sick and need help. Some of them have been abandoned by their parents, or the parents are away working most of the time. I don’t have a lot myself, but I cannot turn them away.” Lynn is able to feed 50 children once a week with the help of Roberts and Chaplin’s audit department which supply Summerhill with sandwiches every Tuesday. Lynn also cooks during school holidays when the children get a hot meal each day to make up for the meal they would normally recieve at school. Funds, raised by Summerhill, also go towards getting documentation for people, school fees, taking Bibles to the community, building the Summerhill facility and more. Lynn was born and grew up on the Tweedie family’s sugar farm inland on the North Coast, and worked for the them for many years. She eventually moved when most of the family had moved away or died, and it no longer felt like home. She then got a job through her church with a family that needed help to look after their twins, and she then moved with them to Pretoria for a time. “I will never forget, it was my first trip in an aeroplane and I was so excited and nervous, but had to be calm to look after the children,” she reminisced. She did not stay long in Pretoria, saying

Lynn has not had an easy life, having never been to school, losing her husband in1990andthenhavingherhomeandfurniture in Stanger repossessed as she couldn’t pay the instalments without her husband and she found herself homeless with 11 children to take care of. Lynn was desperate and even considered prostitution as a solution to help pay keep her home. She decided though that ahouse, evenoneshebuiltwithherhands, was not worth her dignity. Luckily Church Alive helped her find a temporary place to live in. Lynn eventually found a house in Etete, which the Owen family helped her buy and which is now the heart of many Summerhill gatherings. Tearfully she says she doesn’t know whereshewouldbeifitwasnotforheremployer and close friend, Paula. “Paula has a wonderful, kind heart. She has done so much for me and the community. She is very special to all of us. Thanks to her my house will be ours forever.” The Summerhill concept began 10 years ago, and was officially registered as an NPO in 2007. Thembeni skipper hammered the final nail into the Mntwana coffin after heading Makoma’s cross past the Mntwana keeper to give Thembeni a well-deserved 4-2 win. An ecstatic Thembeni coach, Tumelo Khumalo praised his charges who clawed their way from a goal down to record an impressive 4-2 win. He urged his charges to show the same kind of zeal and enthusiasm throughout their league campaign in their quest for league honours. On Saturday, Rock Park eked out a hard-fought 2-1 win against Movers at the recreation ground. K9 Real Celtic grabbed a thrilling 3-2 win against Young Lions. On Friday night Madundube trounced Mavusana 3-0 in a KLFA Premier League game at the Manor grounds.

Philani Mtshali should have doubled Mntwana’s advantage in the 30th minute, but his close-range shot missed the target. Thembeni surged forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded five minutes before the break after Lungani Makoma latched onto a defensive blunder to make the score 1-1. Barely five minutes into the second half, Vumani Ncube, playing on the far left flank dribbled his way into the box before weaving his way past the advancing Mntwana keeper to give Thembeni a 2-1 lead. In the 55th minute Ncube was broughtdowninthe boxbytheMntwana central defender Thulani Mngadi and the referee did not hesitate to award Thembeni a penalty.
