Making your mark
Ilembe IEC says it is ready for today MERVYN KRISHNA
>> Still undecided? What you need to know when casting your ballot FROM PAGE 1 MERVYN KRISHNA BE prepared when you make your cross in the general elections today. The Weekly has done some research for readers to give you a breakdown of some political parties running in this year’s elections in the iLembe District - their history, ideals and what they promise you, one of the 304 154 registered voters in the district. Democratic Alliance (DA) President: Helen Zille Slogan: Together for change-together for jobs As the official opposition, the DA has been keeping the ruling party on its toes over the past few years. The DA was formed in 2000 as amergerbetweentheNewNational Party and the Democratic Party – leading it to be labelled as a “white party”. This year the DA’s election campaign and manifesto are centered on the vision of bringing the promises, hopes and dreams of 1994 alive.
In its manifesto, the DA has promised to save R30 billion a year by cutting corruption, improving service delivery and making MP’s accountable, among other things. Another promise is the creation of six million “real” (permanent and sustainable) jobs. Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) President:Mangosuthu Buthelezi Slogan: Committed to Freedom Founded byButheleziin1975andstillledby him, the IFP was formed to fill the “gap” that had been left by the PAC and the ANC at the time. The IFP enjoys its strongest support in KZN. However, a faction broke away a few years ago, damaging the base. The IFP’s manifesto highlights the problems of service delivery, education, unemployment, corruption and health and proposes solutions and detailed action plans. EconomicFreedomFighters(EFF) President:Julius Malema. Slogan:Economic freedom in our lifetime The EFF is the red beret-wearing, radical new kid on the block.
It has been a force to be reckoned with since its inception early last year, voicing anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist ideology. Over the past year the party has been vocal about the nationalisation of banks, mines and other sectors and the urgent need for the expropriation of land without compensation to achieve the economic freedom the party aims for. EFF promises free education, housing and health-care. These are all part of its seven pillars. In its manifesto a minimum wage is set at R4 500. The party has in a short space of time managed to garner massive support among the youth. African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) President: Reverend Kenneth
Meshoe Slogan: Let’s fix this. Formed in 1993, the ACDP is a collective of Christians

from different backgrounds, providinganalternativetothedivisive politics of the time. The party appeals to voters’ common values, instead of using ideology and race. It claims to be representative of the rainbow nation, but disagrees with parts of our Constitution becauseofreligious reasons. African National Congress (ANC) President:Jacob Zuma Slogan:We have a good story to tell The ruling party, which has been in power for the past 20 years, is one of the continents oldest liberation movements, established over 100 years ago. In 2014 the party’s manifesto is focused on upholding the late former President Nelson Mandela’s legacy of creating a better life for all. The ANC prides itself on the good story of what has been achieved over the past 20 years. Going forward with the help of the National Development Plan, the ANC hopes to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment and inequality. Key areas of focus include the economy, job creation, land reform and improving education.
THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the iLembe District says it is “more than ready” for today’s election. 352 voting stations are expected to accommodate over 304 154 voters during today’s general election. The commission said voters can expect efficient service and short queues. “Our plan is that a person should not spend more than 45 minutes in the queue today,” said regional supervisor of the IEC in the iLembe District, Paul Daniel. “We prepared meticulously for the election. There is a tendency for political parties’ temperatures to rise.” he said during an interview with the Weekly. Daniel called for tolerance and respect during the election, saying the IEC acknowledged citizens’ rights to protest, but cautioned against infringing on the rights of others. As an election management body, the IEC cannot not enforce the law, and acts of intimidation needed to be reported to the police, he said.

ANC seeks to “clarify equity” >> Officials shed light on place of Indians and other minorities in party MERVYN KRISHNA
G
REATER KwaDukuza regional treasurer of the ANC, Thulani Ntuli, has taken a swipe at “reactionary forces” who are “trying to sow seeds of division and hate against the Indian origin”. Ntuli was part of a delegation, including the provincial chairman of the ANC Senzo Mchunu, regional chairman and secretary Thokozani Msweli and Muzi Sithole, conducting a doorto-door campaign in the Etete area. “In the context of the struggle for freedom, Indian people, just like the coloured people, have always been part of the oppressed black majority,” Ntuli told the Weekly. “Therefore, Indians have never been mere auxiliaries in the struggle for freedom as may be suggested by some, whose sole intention is to divide the black majority for political expediency.” Ntuli said the promotion of non-racialism was the strength and

uniqueness of South Africa and the ruling ANC. “We pride ourselves on our track record of non-racialism. It is genuine and is tried and tested. “Our non-racialism and in particular the unity of the oppressed, was inevitable, given that during our struggle for liberation, Indians, coloureds and Africans, as black people, shared a common fate. The liberation of one group was inextricably linked to that of the other.” Mchunu reassured people that the government’s post-apartheid policy formulations and perspectives were aimed at redressing the inequalities and injustices of the apartheid era. “When we conceptualise policies such as Affirmative Action, Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, the Employment Equity Act and others, we proceed from the understanding that we need to correct the injustices of the past meted out against Africans, Indians, coloureds and women.
“Since the inception of democracy in 1994, we have implemented policies whose main objectives are to create jobs, eliminate poverty and reduce inequality. The government will in the next five years relentlessly pursue these policies in order to ensure our economy truly reflects the demographics of our country. “While we have made progress on this front, much more remains to be done as indicated by the recent report released by the Commission for Employment Equity which showed that representations have only grown from 23.7 per cent to 33.2 per cent over the past 10 years.” Mchunu emphasised that the bias towards the Indian-origin, African and coloured people was not meant to polarise society but was the most decisive intervention towards redress and social cohesion. “White compatriots must never feel excluded in this important project of building a nonracial, non-sexist ...South Africa.”
was with his two grandchildren and his son-in-law Kevin Naicker when the incident occurred. Naicker said they were about to pack-up after fishing for more than two hours when he heard his fatherin-law fall and hit a rock. “As I turned around I saw him slouched on the ground. I initially thought that he had slipped and hit his head on the rock, but when I bent over towards him, he was unconscious. We tried for about 25 minutes to revive him. “I administered CPR, while the
boys ran for help. There was no blood or any head wounds, so I felt we could resuscitate him. Unfortunately there was no one around except a fisherman.” The police arrived first and then called for an ambulance. The paramedics checked his heart, he said. “When I saw the flat-line appearing on the paramedic’s machine while they conducted the heart test, I feared the worst. They said his pulse was gone and all major organs were nonresponsive.” Govender was declared dead at the scene.

A call to KZN fashion fundis and designers ADVERTORIAL ESTABLISHED, emerging and student fashion designers are invited
MERVYN KRISHNA RESIDENTS of KwaDukuza, especially those of Indian origin, celebrated 20 years of freedom in song, dance and speeches during a cultural day event on Saturday at the Stanger Manor Grounds, hosted by the KwaDukuza Municipality. KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu said he was “astounded” at the turnout, emphasising that the partnership with the community was impressive. “KwaDukuza is now a better place to live than it was 20 years ago. “Residents are happy about the developments that took place over the 20 year period and that there has been great improvement in the area,” said Mthembu. He said he is certain that the general elections will “go well”, as there has been amazing political tolerance recorded in KwaDukuza so far. “Political tolerance exercised by the people of KwaDukuza has been amazing. We are impressed and certain that the general elections will be free and fair,” he told the audience. He made an appeal to residents to come out in numbers and cast their votes as this will contribute towards a better life for all.
to attend the “Inspiration, Designing your Collection” workshop. The workshop is aimed at capacitating designers to technically use various resources to find inspiration when embarking on a new collection, as well as fine-tuning existing skills. The workshop is being hosted by the KZN Fashion Council (KZNFC). The KZNFC aims to support and mentor fashion designers to manage sustainable businesses in the
ment Unit. The KZNFC is governed by a board of directors that provide strategic guidance. The KZNFC invokes a comprehensive and sustainable multi-disciplinary approach that supports the continuous creative and economic development of the fashion and design sector. Much of the work of the KZNFC is premised on ensuring that strategic partnerships, collaboration and linkages are established with local
fashion sector through training skills workshops, thereby contributing to job creation within KZN. The KZNFC was established in 2009 as a not-for-profit company (section 21), in response to the need to support the fashion design sector. Cash-for-truth idea a boon for politics DESIREE ERASMUS
B
REAKING: In a move called ‘dumb and incredibly dangerous’, members of the South African government who sit in executive positions have taken a unanimous vote to ‘tell the truth at all costs’. Thedecision allegedly materialised after an international billionaire funder–who will remain anony-
MINORITY Front Leader Shameen Thakur Rajbansi denounced the “pissing DA cartoon” as damning, immoral, senseless, defamatory and unethical. This is a direct insult to all Minority Front supporters and the lndian community. I am shocked and disgusted at the political campaigning of some DA members who circulated this cartoon on social media and emailed it to our leader and myself. “This action violates the electoral code of conduct, signed by the leader Helen Zille,” stated Mrs Rajbansi, and social sites must not be used to defame people or organisations. This cartoon has hurt the dignity of the lndian community as it displays the arrogance of a supremist colonial
mous until some random 12-yearold hacks official emails – is said to have pledged one million US dollars for each ‘truth’ told in parliament and at public rallies and conferences. The move comes after the billionaire allegedly had the revelation while beating his head against a brick wall at the anticipate outcome of South Africa’s recently-held national election. Such was the enthusiasm of the nation’s public servants to ‘get involved and make a difference’ through ‘Truthgate’ that for the first time in its recorded history, all representatives stayed awake during the latest parliamentary sitting in order to vote. This included an 85-year-old political veteran who was alleged to be in a coma for the last 20 years. Speaking after the voting session, one official started tallying on his fingers while telling the floor:
Cartoon is OFFENSIVE mentality over the Minority Front which is home to thousands of lndian voters. No amount of reasonable explanation will absolve the creator of this unethical cartoon that damages the absolute fabric of our society and democracy. The Minorty Front logo is sacred to the party and its supporters. This act is malicious and the work of desperate candidates who stoop to the level of human rights violations in trying to please their masters for their positions. The perpetrators who created this defamatory cartoon
“Comrades, I am happy with the outcome of the vote because it grates my biscuit to sit here and lie about having a master’s degree in politics. “I am just a failed chef with a KFC fetish. Also, I am sick of calling everyone comrade, it’s very 1994.” A second official then took to the floor and, producing an abacus from her Prada handbag, stated the following: “Fellow countrymen and women, I am excited at the potential upliftment that can be achieved through ‘Truthgate’. “Finally I have a chance to tell my constituents that an overflowing sewage pipe alongside a crèche is not a healthhazard–it is an opportunity for the community to pull together and shovel the sh*t themselves. “The sh*t can then be used as a nice compost on the community vegetable garden that we may build

This cartoon has violated the Minorty Front's rights for a free and fair election, because it has gone viral on social networks, inducing hatespeech and racism. The community must now be the judge. Mrs Rajbansi stated that the vote of lndian people will make history on 7 May, but it will be for the Minority Front - the real home for all lndians. for them in 2016 or 2017. “In the interim, the shovelled sh*t can be placed next to the roundabout and slide as a little climbing mountain for kiddies.” Speaking from uMhlanga after taking her vote via Skype during a botox party, one official told the Weekly: “The potential ramifications of ‘Truthgate’ are enormous and heartening. “With ‘Truthgate’ comes the opportunity to finally meet our millennium development goals – the ones that have been slightly tweaked for our area. “Truthgate finally gives me the opportunity to satisfy my Messiah complex and to emulate my hero, Oprah, by canvassing amongst the middle and working classes. I now feel no shame in donning my latex gloves so that I can give sales assistants and domestic workers a little pat on their grubby clothing.
“In fact, I can now unashamedly utilise public funds to book a five-star retreat and take potential female voters from the street there in order to give them free manicures and pedicures. “It may be true that education is important, but looking good while you are getting educated can go a long way in building a girl-child’s prospects; this way she can marry rich and will hopefully never have to think independently again. “I get one, you get one, we all get free manis and pedis,” she yelled. UPDATE: The billionaire funder has since clarified that he will, in fact, be paying those partaking in ‘Truthgate’ in the Zimbabwean dollar, a defunct currency. People interviewed for this article have since denied any knowledge of ‘Truthgate’ or making the above statements.
Visvin Reddy must unite, not divide WE CANNOT MANDATE PEOPLE TO THINK THE WAY WE DO, NEITHER CAN WE FORCE PEOPLE TO SUPPORT A SPECIFIC POLITICAL PARTY SOUTH Africa is a country born out of a turbulent history, where racial discrimination reigned supreme. Our freedom from Apartheid occurred because of the countless sacrifices of blacks, whites, Indians and coloureds respectively. Our fight for democracy was exactly that, a fight for democracy; a system where each person irrespective of their race, ethnicity or creed, could vote and support the party of their choice. We cannot mandate people to think the way we do, neither can we force people to support a specific political party. Being part of a democracy means respecting each person’s right to hold their own political views. Former President Nelson Mandela clearly elucidated that a democracy allows for a diversity of opinion, and a diversity of political views. He also emphasized that those views must be respected and protected. This is precisely why I have been calling for the establishment of a Ministry for Minority Affairs, to en-

sure that the specific issues faced by minority communities are addressed. I therefore think Visvin Reddy needs to consult his own party and ensure that his statements are in line with the party's mandate, before he makes loose assertions based on anger and contempt, which ultimately breeds greater seeds of division. As a nation, there is so much that unites us. We have a glorious shared history born out of a struggle for a non-racial society. This is an ideal which was cherished by both Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, iconic leaders that understood the importance of creating unity among people from various backgrounds. The oppression and subjugation of the Indian community in South Africa over the last hundred years has left an indelible scar, which hasty statements and confrontation will not solve. Mr. Reddy, I am sure, can acknowledge that many in our community have not been mentally liberated from the yolk of their former masters. Therefore, wemustworkconstructivelyand with humility to release our community from the shackles of cerebral slavery, which still binds us to our former colonial masters. Roy Bhoola (MP) 083 513 9022

ADVERTORIAL CONSTANT neck pain is a common problem and is quite difficult to deal with. It is troublesome since it impacts negatively on all aspect of your life and health. What are some of the causes of neck pain? Damaged nerve (pinching of nerve), degenerativediscdisease, injury, whiplash, constant exposure to cold winds, stress, holding the neck in the same position for a long time, improper or quick movement. Symptoms of neck pain: Constant headache and neck pain especially pain at the back of the head, stiffness, back pain along with neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, swallowing problems, dizziness, poor concentration, depression, light-headed, irritability, anxiety, eye pain and glandular swelling. Treatment of neck pain: We at ‘Holistic Wellness Centre’ use acupuncture,therapeuticmassage,cupping,electro-therapy and heat therapy to improve the flow of blood in and around the affected area. Thus nerve functions are restored and symptoms related to neck pain start subsiding. Patients respond fantastically and almost immediate relief is felt, since we are treating the root cause of the problem and not just the symptom, thus enabling you to live a pain free life. For all of us, stiffness and pain are a way of life to which we have become accustomed and it is not until we receive acupuncture and therapeutic massage that we realize our muscles are tight or how much of our energy is consumed by stress. If you or someone you know is suffering from neck pain, consult with these qualified and registered acupuncturists so that you get the relief you deserve. Here are 10 Mother's Day movies to watch with your mum on this special
Steel Magnolias As a tear-jerking chick flick that celebrates the relationships between a mother, daughter and friends in a small southern town, this movie succeeded in portraying female characters who are not only delicate but also as tough as steel.
Mamma Mia! A top notch Mother’s Day flick. Serving as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs, this story told us about a bride-to-be trying to find her real father. So if your mom loves ABBA and wants to have a good laugh, watch this film.
Stepmom Another tear-jerker that stars Ed Harris, Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. This movie revolves around a terminally-ill mother who has to settle on the new woman in her ex-husband's life, who will be the new stepmother to her children.

Terms of Endearment Terms of Endearment depicts a comedic yet weepy story between formidable mother (Shirley MacLaine) and daughter (Debra Winger). Nabbing five Oscars, this one will surely be the way to go if you’d like to show your appreciation and love to your mom.
The Blind Side A true story about a mom who forms a bond with a young homeless man bound for athletic stardom, it will have you cheering with its mix of action and emotion. If you are going to give thanks to your mom’s unselfishness and greatness, this movie will do the trick.

soning him, throwing him off a cliff, burning him alive. However, each time Prahlad emerged unharmed and protected. Finally, in a state of great fury, he asked Prahlad: “Where is your Lord Vishnu to whom you pray so much.” To which Prahlad calmly replied: “He is everywhere, within and out in every single atom of the universe.” This made Hiranyakashipu very angry and he pointed to a large pillar and asked Prahlad whether Lord Vishnu was inside the pillar, to which he gave an affirmative reply. This enraged him and he struck the pillar, at which moment there was a great noise as if the entire world was torn apart. Amazed at this event, everyone watched as the terrifying Man-Lion form of the Lord appeared from the pillar. Lord Narasimha attacked Hiranyakashipu and dragged the demon-king to the doorstep, placed him upon his lap, and using his lightning-like nails, tore him apart. It was twilight, and every single aspect of the boon that had been promised to Hiran-
yakashipu by Lord Brahma had been honoured in its entirety. At that time, the rage of the Lord Narasimha could not be pacified by anybody. The demigods finally requested Prahlad to step forward and pacify LordNarasimha.LordNarasimhaseeingPrahladimmediately calmed down and smiled. Whenever the Supreme Lord descends upon earth, he comes to help mankind follow the spiritual path through Righteous actions. Hiranyakashipu represents one’s ego and Prahlada exemplifies pure Bhakti (devotion). Hence, we learn that if we truly surrender to the Supreme Lord with pure Bhakti, we can destroy our ego, as the ego and the mind are the obstacles to the spiritual path. One, who surrenders to the Supreme Lord, will always be protected by him. There are only two Narashima temples in South Africa, one in KwaDukuza and the other in Allan Manor in Johannesburg. We therefore, extend an invitation to the community to attend and celebrate Narashima Chaturthi and receive Lord Narasimhadev’s protection from all negativity and evil forces.

Narasimha Chaturthi on 13 May HENEVER and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion–at that time I descend Myself.” These are words spoken by Lord Krishna to Arjuna during the war in the Bhagavad Gita. In one such manifestation, the lord appeared as Narasimhadev the fourth incarnation of Maha Vishnu – the Man-Lion incarnation that tore the world asunder in the ferocity of the event. He appeared to protect his beloved devotee Prahlad from the demonic Hiranyakashipu. The evil Hiranyakashipu had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he will not be killed by man or beast, in the day or at night, by any kind of weapon, neither on earth nor in the sky and neither inside nor outside the house. After obtaining the boon, he felt he was unstoppable and was cruel and especially hostile to the devotees of the Supreme Lord Narayana. Little Prahlad, the son of Hiranyakashipu, was a saintly child who worshiped the Lord. Hearing this, a highly disturbed Hiranyakashipu started plotting the death of his own son by poi-

M
ANOR Cricket Club clinched the Warriors Sport-sponsored Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 Knockout Cup after trouncing Morningside by 47-runs in the final played before a huge crowd at the Country Club grounds on Sunday. The decision by Morningside to field first after winning the toss was rewarded as early as the second over after Steven Jacobs was clean bowled by Levan Moodaly for a duck. Despite the early setback, Zakarriya “Slo-mo” Cassimjee and Alveiro Nadasen took the game to the Morningside attack, putting on a splendid 68-runs partnership for the second
wicket. Cassimjee smashed 22 runs which included two fours before being run out by Kimone Reddy. Dillon Rautenbach was sent for an early shower after being caught at mid-off by Preshen Rampersadh off the bowling of Rajen Naidoo for one run. Mohamed Mhlongo joined Nadasen at the crease and the pair took the tally to 118/4 in the 16th over before Mhlongo (21) was caught at first slipbyRishalDevkurran off the bowling of Moodaly. With four overs remaining, Nadasen, who has been at the centre from the first delivery of the match blasted his 13th boundary to take his tally to a splendid 90 runs before being caught at long off by Rampersadh off
ing clean bowled by Rautenbach for 23 runs. Morningside were 79/3 in the 12th over and needed 92 more runs from 8 overs to upset the more fancied Manor outfit. SaieshanLogenathan(2/17from4 overs) and Moolla (2/27 from 4 overs) were the most economical Manor bowlers. Rajen Naidoo walked tall at the prize-giving ceremony, scooping the award for scoring the most number of sixes and the bowling accolade. He was unanimously voted player of the series. Nadasen was adjudged batsman of the tournament. President of Ilembe Cricket Union, Aboo Ismail thanked Warriors Sport for their generous sponsorship for the third year in succession. Warriors Sport CEO, Rajiv Mathapershad said: “We feel proud to have sponsored a tournament that brought out the best of our local talent and having fielded all our local heroes. “We have achieved our goal and this made it worthwhile”.

Rampersadh retired hurt at the start of the eighth over. Naidoo, who was in prolific form with the bat throughout the competition, added two more sixes to his tally before be-
the bowling of Naidoo in the penultimate delivery. Manor notched up 170/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Moodaly (2/29 from 4 overs) and Naidoo (2/28 from 4 overs) were the pick of the Morningside bowlers.
