closed. Intensive investigations led to the arrest of Nxumalo in Pongola. It is alleged that on May 7, at around 9.30pm, Mhlongo was allegedly killed by unknown suspects. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. A case of murder was opened at KwaDukuza police station for further investigation. Nxumalo was not asked to plead. Leaders pay respects to murdered volunteer’s family MERVYN KRISHNA

SENIOR members of the African Na-

tional Congress (ANC) paid their respects to the family of murder ANC volunteer Nuh Mhlongo (30), who was shot dead outside a polling station in Lindelani on election day. National executive member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, provincial chairman of the ANC Senzo Mchunu, provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala and PEC member Nomusa Dube visited the Mhlongo family on Friday. Mchunu said he thought long standing political rivalry and violence between Lindelani’s IFP and ANCmemberswasathingofthepast. Dlamini-Zuma told ANC supporters that they should not hold any grudges. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our murdered comrade at this difficult time and we wish them strength and fortitude during this time of sorrow,” she said. Mholongo, a mother of three, had been facilitating at the ANC’s information tent. Her cousin, Ntombi Hadebe, also a volunteer said they were waiting to begin counting when the shooting occurred. Zikalala said that he condemned the “heinous and barbaric attack in the strongest possible terms”. “It is clear that the killing had been well planned to instill fear among ANC volunteers on election day,” he said.

ESIDENTS of Zamani Township, near Darnall say they have had enough with the KwaDukuza SAPS and are now callingontheMECforSafetyandSecurity to intervene in their ongoing issues with local taxi security. The residents are accusing the KwaDukuza Taxi Association security guards of abuse, saying the guards regularly force them off buses, insisting that they use taxis instead. The residents say that they have contacted the police a number of times, but their pleas fall on deaf ears. They are now calling on the MEC to remove the security guards from the Darnall route. The residents closed the R102 between KwaDukuza and Empangeni last week using a burning car, tree branches, pipes and burning tyres. Ward two councillor Ntsiki Pakkies said the protesters claimed that the security guards regularly force them to use taxis. “Theywantmetoremovethesecurity guards and I do not know how I am going to do that because I do not have the power to do so,” said Pakies. KwaDukuza Taxi Association chairperson Bongizwe Mhlongo said they were not aware of the community’s complaints. “Ifanyonehasacomplainttheyare free to let us know and that matter will beresolved.Ifasecurityguardabuses you in any way, you should open a case and none of t he Darnall resident has done that!” said Mhlongo.

Win tickets to Top Gear POPULAR motoring media personality Marius Roberts has joined the Top Gear Festival Durban team, bringing with him the promise of more mototainment than ever before. The bar is set high for the local selfproclaimed petrol-head, but he is up for the challenge. “I am a huge fan of Top Gear, a huge fan of cars and a huge fan of Durban, so when I got the call regarding the

position of content manager for the Top Gear Festival 2014 in Durbs, I didn’t have to give it much thought. “By combining these passions, Festival goers can expect fresh content and the very best, locally relevant mototainment on the street circuit at this year’s festival. It’s been an incredibly successful two years for Top Gear in Durban so it’s ‘foot flat’ from me to ensure this year is no different!” said Roberts. The new layout has additional benefits including bringing the street circuit action even closer to the spectators. With the circuit looping back on itself along Battery Road, the new grand-

stand positions create a stadium feel around the Street Circuit, allowing Top Gear fans to get even more bang for their buck. From the moment the sun rises on 21 and 22 June to the time the sun sets, there will be non-stop action right in front of them! On track there is plenty for spectators to get excited about with more competitive racing action. The newest and most exciting action takes the form of an all new Time Attack Invitational, where 30 of South Africa’s bravest drivers take each other on in 30 of South Africa’s fastest cars.

Let me see if I am able to summarise the intricate, unique plots for readers of this column: Twilight deals with forbidden love between a sparkly, centuries’ old male vampire and a 17year-old human female and all of the emotional quandaries that would entail. The Hunger Games deals with a teenthat has to fightherwaythrough a dystopian post-apocalyptic world and all of the emotional quandaries that would entail. It was tough, but I think that about captures all of the subtle nuances and complexities of

each. Both series have ‘taken the world by storm’ and have seen such success that they have been madeintohitmoviesbythatother beacon of hope when it comes to quality production – Hollywood. For reasons known only to perpetual crack users, Twilight has been compared to the novels of Jane Austen. Perpetual tic usershaveratedtheseriesas‘one of the best reads ever’. The Hunger Games has received even more favourable reviews, even though someone like horror-writer Stephen King has given the series a ‘B’ because it’s predictable and adults would be able to pick up on the writing flaws. Pot, kettle, black? What Fyodor Dostoevsky would have thought of this is open for debate, although I am guessing poison intravenouslyadministeredoveradecade or so would be his wish. As for comparing the writing in Twilight to Austen; Jane Austen was aninimitablewriter.Herskillswereand are admired internationally by academics and plebs like yours truly. And her characters actually had...well,

character. Let us compare this to Twilight. Consider this inspired quote from heroine Bella Swan, talking about the uber-pale, uber-intense, uber-limplettuce-leaf personality of vampire Edward: “I wasn’t interesting. And hewas.Interesting…andbrilliant…and mysterious…and perfect… and beautiful…and possibly able to lift full-sized vans with one hand.” AsfortheHungerGames, soviolent is it that parents have lobbied because they deem it age inappropriate for the young teen market. It has been compared to a graphic novel made for Hollywood, and no doubt the publisher had this in mind when agonising over how much carnage would increase sales. Why Twilight and The Hunger Games have ‘swept the world’ is not much of a mystery, given their marketability and sales potential. If, however, young bibliophiles are open to being challenged by literature that has more depth than a petri-dish, we should encourage them to read the classics. It may surprise many to find that lust, intrigue, passion, obsessive love, murder, war and tragedy can be written with conviction, beauty and what we generally find lacking in the bestsellers of today - insight.

A man of compassion I RECENTLY had a traumatic experience with my dog who had to be put down due to serious injuries.Whenshewasinjured, I immediately took her to Dr Balipursad, our local veterinarian, who advised me to take her to the 24 hour veterinary clinic in Umhlanga. Although my dog was not in his care, Dr Balipursad made several calls to

check on the dog. Even when it was determined that she had to be put down, he advised me to bring her to him and he would do it at no cost to me. His empathy towards my distress shows he is a man of compassion. Dr Balipursad, you are indeed a great humanitarian. Selvan Naidoo

Moodley seeks double green number >> Athlete set to complete 20th Comrades Marathon WEEKLY REPORTER

D

IPPY Moodley will be seeking his double green number when he attempts the Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on 1 June. Moodley completed 10 successive Comrades Marathon in 2000 and was over the moon after earning his first green number, finishing the epic 89km race in a time of 9:05. Moodley will be aiming to finish his 20th Comrades Marathon next month in the hope of earning his second green number. He came close to earning a “double-green” last year in the “up-run”, but was pulled out of the race by Comradesofficialsafterfailingtomakethe last cut-off at Polly Shorts with less than 12km remaining. Moodley said: “Last year’s race was run in absolutely humid condi-
