HE case of the man who allegedly fatally shot an ANC volunteer at the Lindelani voting station in KwaDukuza on Election Day was postponed until 18 June for further investigation.

Before being transported to Durban, Dumisani Nxumalo (28) made a brief appearance at the KwaDakuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday while hundreds of IFP supporters chanted outside, demanding his release.

About 100 ANC supporters were also protesting.

Police, some in riot gear, formed a barricade between the old political rivals as both lots of supporters hurled insults at one another.

ANCmembers called for Nxumalo to be given the maximum sentence and for the victim, Thandi ‘Nuh’ Mhlongo, to be named a martyr for the ANC’s next term of government.

Mhlongo was shot at the Lindelani voting station where she was manning an ANC information desk.

Nxumalo was arrested the next day in Pongola.

Nxumalo’s KwaDukuza appearance - to apply for bail and legal representation - was brief, after which he was transported to the Durban Regional Court.

According to IFP Youth League member Ben Masondo, Nxumalo was “wrongly arrested”.

“We are here today to demand his release because he did not kill the ANC volunteer.

“The police and the ANC know this but the law is being flouted. We know that an ANC member was involved in the shooting and this innocent man is taking the fall.

“It is not constitutional and we do not accept it. He must be released and the true killer must be brought to book.”

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, who was present at the court, said transport had been arranged to bus ANC members to Durban to support the “cause of justice”.

He urged the community to exercise restraint while justice takes its course and said he was “certain” that the case would bring closure to the bereaved family.

Man killed in accident on R102 ONE man died and another escaped uninjured after a truck and a Kia bakkie collided on the R102 in the New Guelderland area near KwaDukuza at around 8:30am on Friday.

Netcare 911 paramedics found the bakkie ripped apart, its wreckage coming to rest on the side of the road.

“Firemen used the jaws of life to free the trapped driver from the twisted remains, while paramedics treated another person. “ Tragically the driver died before our arrival.

“The other person had minor injuriesandrefusedfurthertreatment,” said Netcare 911's Chris Botha.

N-FORCE Security arrested a “notorious” chain snatcher who was allegedly involved in several chain snatching cases in the KwaDukuza CBD. Preston ‘Snowy’ Maharaj was arrested after N-Force director Nitesh Arjun says he received several complaints from residents.

Arjun formed a task team to interview the victims, who all gave similar descriptions and described similar modus operandi.

He said the investigations led him the suspect.

“Investigations revealed that Maharaj would be in KwaMashu on one day and then in Chesterville the next. He moved around a lot,” said Arjun.

“I offered a reward for information on his whereabouts, which was circulated in the criminal circles in KwaDukuza. We received information that he was in the KwaDukuza taxi rank area on Wednesday, 14 May. However, when we arrived, Maharaj fled.

“I received information the next day that he was in the CBD. I also contacted the KwaDukuza SAPS. When I apprehended him, he drew aknife.However,Imanagedtooverpowerhim and arrested him,” said Arjun.

KwaDukuza deputy mayor Dolly Govender,whoalsohadherchainrippedoffherneck, in King Shaka Street, identified the suspect.

Another victim, Dr Les McDonald, who had his gold chain snatched near the Whitehouse building in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, also positively identified Maharaj.

Arjun said investigations also revealed that Maharaj sold the jewellery to three different Nigerian nationals, whose names are known to the Weekly.

Meanwhile, one of the nationals, who Maharajsoldthechainsto,openedacaserobbery against Maharaj on Monday.

According to police reports, Maharaj contacted the Nigerian national and told him to meet with him in Balcomb Street. Maharaj also said he should come with enough cash because he had an expensive gold chain to sell to him. When they met, Maharaj together with two others robbed him of two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Maharaj appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday on nine counts of robbery. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody.

Jobs-for-cash accusations in KwaDukuza MERVYN KRISHNA THE jobs-for-cash scandal involving SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) members, revealed by City Press last month, is also “rife” in KwaDukuza, sources known to the Stanger Weekly say.

Sources say Sadtu influences the placement of teachers in promotion posts, so much so that many see Sadtu as an “employment agency”.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior KwaDakuza teacher, who has “given up on ever being promoted on merit” said: “It seems that Sadtu is the department in this province.”

In a new twist to the scandal, a teacher has claimed that a union official asked for sex in order for her to be promoted to principal.

Research published in the Africa Education Review journal revealed that teacher unions “often ignored their role as observers during the shortlisting process, which led to their members being unjustly promoted”.

This comes after City Press revealed that top posts, including those of principal and deputy principal, are routinely sold for R30 000 and higher.

In at least two cases, principals were violently forced out of their post and threatened with death.

They were then replaced with candidates whom they claim paid off union officials to take their jobs.

One principal, known to the Stanger Weekly, says he is too scared to have his name published.

“When this thing started in the late 1990s, they were demanding around R11 000 for a promotion post. Now it starts at R30 000.”

The recently resigned principal, with nearly 20 years’ experience, added: “It’s very prevalent. Sadtu is running the department here because it’s them who say who gets what post.”

The Weekly interviewed several principals who had retired in the past two years, each with 35 years’ experience.

They suggested that the interview process be outsourced to an employment agency.

The former principals told of posts being filled according to participation in union activities rather than expertise.

“There seems to be a tendency for teachers to become involved with union work in order to be rewarded with a promotion, while teaching and learning are compromised,” said a principal who retired last year after 42 years.

The Weekly also interviewed teachers with more than 20 years’ experience who say they have been overlooked for promotion because of not being unionaffiliated.

Both teachers and principals spoke of union members being “aggressive and intimidating” in their attempt to sway the selection process, saying that if the union’s preferred candidates did not make the shortlist, it would lodge a grievance.

“There is no fairness — unions influence uneducated parents, and if the SGB is strong you see a lot of grievances,” a senior teacher said.

IN A NEW TWIST TO THE SCANDAL, A TEACHER HAS CLAIMED THAT A UNION OFFICIAL ASKED FOR SEX IN ORDER FOR HER TO BE PROMOTED TO PRINCIPAL influence of Sadtu observers whom they say intimidate governing bodies into unjustly promoting their members.

However, sources say that iLembe District education director TC Vilakazi warned circuit managers at a meeting last week about ensuring fairness of the promotion process in their school, whether the post was head of department, deputy principal or principal.

Disgruntled Sadtu members have allegedly lodged grievances after not beingpreferredcandidates,asituation which was eventually only corrected when the education MEC intervened.

Another principal said the “unfairness” at the way governing bodies are “misled and bullied is glaring”.

The principal said an example was the way a suitably qualified long-serving HOD at Melville Primary School, who was acting principal, was bypassed and a “poorly qualified and less experienced person from the outside was appointed as acting principal”.

However, in this case the right person got the post by default, but only because the appointed person died before taking up the post.

The teacher quoted instances in KwaDukuza where senior Sadtu officials were placed as principals and deputy principals.

“Two of them have since been suspended from Sadtu.

“One principal was placed at a

primary school, yet before he took up his post he got promoted a second time to a ‘big’ high school by getting his comrades to demonstrate outside the circuit office, demanding that a letter of appointment be faxed from the head office.”

He said the candidate was “only an HOD” and overtook the acting principal of three years who had been a deputy principal for more than 10 years and a teacher for over 30 years.

A group of teachers from the school said they now have a poorly qualified principal just because he was a senior Sadtu official.

Another teacher remarked that people are no longer employed, they are deployed.

Meanwhile, the Weekly has learnt that a commission of inquiry is soon to be appointed to investigate these and other claims, and “heads are set to roll”.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has met with unions to discuss the allegations in the appointment of school positions.

“All the unions have agreed to cooperate to root out the alleged practice and take strong action against those found to be involved,” she said in a statement following Friday’s meeting.

Attempts to obtain comment from national negotiator of Sadtu Bheki Shandu was unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

I AM hoping that the title does not deter youfromreadingthiscolumn.

It is inspired, in part, by an article published in DoubleX, a blog founded by Hanna Rosin.

In this day and age, many of us still do not think the rape of men is serious, or believe that reported cases are true.

Case inpointisthefirsttimeIwas told about the rape of a local man (and indeed every other time I heard it from other people) it was presented as a joke.

This man had hitched a ride in a car occupied by four “normal looking” women who drove past his destination and drove him, at gunpoint, to an open field in an undisclosed location. The man says he wasthenplacedonatowelonwhich he was repeatedly raped for over 10 hours.

The way it was reported in the news was, while not being a direct mockery, as something astonishing, an anomaly, and this I feel overshadowed the true gist of the story — a human being was raped.

Why do people find it “unusual” when men get raped? I could even say that some find such stories

unbelievable and there’s a sense of subliminal bullshitting in many of the stories.

For example, the victim of the Gingindlovu rape was and still is being subjected to mockery and is accused of lying, because “it is impossible for a man to be raped”.

I think it all boils down to assumptions regarding male sexuality such as “if he is erect during the encounter, then he must have

wanted to have sex” or “he must have enjoyed it because men are like that with sex”.

In arguing against abortion for rape victims in the United States, Missouri Republican Todd Akin said in August 2012 that a woman cannot get pregnant from legitimate rape. This meant that a woman who fell pregnant as a result of rape was not “legitimately” raped.

It is a stupid statement that showed an even uglier underlying truth in society. Our assumptions when it comes to sexual crimes are severely flawed and this has a knock-on effect of how we view vic-

tims and offenders and we sometimes switch their roles in our minds. But how can we define rape perpetrated on men? Can we qualify rape as a woman forcefully causing penetration? Is there a rape kit for men, and what proof does a man have to present in court? Not many South African studies on the rape of men have been conducted and even less are publicised. A survey printed in 2008 in the BioMed Central’s International Journal for Equity in Health showed that “boys were most frequently assaulted by adult women, followed closely by schoolchildren”.

South Africa again stands out in the world for our definition of rape as a sexual crime. Rape as definedbytheCriminalLaw(Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No. 32 of 2007) is: “Any person (“A”) who unlawfully and intentionally commits an act of sexual penetration with a complainant (“B”), without the consent of B, is guilty of the offence of rape”, and this is not at all gender-based, as opposed to many other countries’ definitions.

Now that our judicial system is gender-blind to sexual crimes, it is (when executed correctly) arguably the best in the world.

But it is as good as the worst unless we change our mind-set on whatconstitutesrape,regardless of whether it is a man or a woman who is raped.

Latest reports indicate that the Gingindlovu man has quit his job and left the area.

“I couldn’t deal with some of the remarks. Some people were saying I wasn’t man enough, others accused me of lying,” he was quoted as saying.

UK pupils assist Glenhills Primary MERVYN KRISHNA GLENHILLS Primary School received a gift of love from a group of caring teachers, pupils and parents of Lutterworth High School in the United Kingdom.

Sports equipment, books and loads of other resources were brought in by thegroup ledbyheadteacher Nora Parker to lend support to the school’s academicandsportingprogramme.

The group was greeted with a warm welcome on Friday. They will be at the school until Friday this week.

Parker said they were touched when they arrived at the school gate to see a huge banner which said ‘Welcome Lutterworth High School’.

“We were introduced by the head prefect to the pupilswearegoingtobeworking with, had a tour of the school and then officially welcomed by a full school assembly which included all the staff and students being given a flower garland as a token of their friendship. This was followed by a concertofdancingandsinging by some of the students.

The visit was rounded off with a wonderful lunch provided by the school,” said Parker.

KDVA to host SPI Corporate KO Cup

WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Volleyball Association (KDVA) will host the Sunil Pranpath Incorporated (SPI) Corporate Knockout Cup commencing tonight (Wednesday) at the association courts at 7pm.

Treasurer of KDVA, Rajiv Mathapershad expressed his sincere thanks to Sunil Pranpath (CEO of Sunil Pranpath Incorporated) for his magnanimous gesture in promoting corporate volleyball in

KwaDukuza.

The tournament is open to males (35 years and older) and females (25 years and older). The entry fee of R300 per team must be paid prior to the draws. Mathapershad warned that teams who failed to comply will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.

Matches will be played in two pools on a league basis (all three sets comprising of 15 uncapped points).

HE Ilembe Cricket Union 30th anniversary double-wicket tournament was a resounding success with more than 70 teams (ranging from the under 11 ranks to senior category) participating in the two-day festival.

Alveiro Nadasen and Tiger Ponnsamy proved to be a formidable combination and started odds-on favourites for honours in the senior category. In the semi-finals against Ashraf Ismail and Younis Ismail, Ponnsamy and Nadasen dismissed their opponents for 16 runs before cruising to the final with five balls remaining.

Intheearliersemi-finalclash,Bilal Ismail and Yusuf Ismail were dismissed for 26 against Rajen Naidoo and Rishal Devkurran. In reply Devkurran was dismissed for a solitary run, but Naidoo produced a stellar performance with the bat smashingtwofoursandasix,totakehisindividual tally to 28 to book their place

Thefinalprovedtobealowscoring affair with Ponnsamy (2) and Nadasen (14) dismissed cheaply. All eyes were on the big hitting Naidoo to clinch the 2014 double-wicket tournament title, but “cricket is indeed a funny game”- with Naidoo caught in the covers for a duck, putting immense pressure on Devkurran to take them across the finish line.

Ponnsamy, inspired by his wife and son on the touchline, clean

bowled Devkurran (11) in the second over to clinch the 2014 double-wicket title. Ponnsamy was voted bowler of the tournament with his partner, Nadasen scooping the batting award and the prestigious player of the tournament award.

Naidoo, appropriately nicknamed “master-blaster” smashed more than seven sixes in the tournament to scoop the award for the most number of sixes. Eighteen-year-old matriculant, Bilal Ismail who kept wickets

throughout the two-day tournament was adjudged fielder of the tournament.

Muhammed Mather and Ebrahim Ismail clinched the veteran doublewicket title after beating Gings Reddy and Tarzan Naicker in the final.

Mayuren Logenathan and Adesh Bageloo grabbed the under 15 double-wickettitleafterbeatingSaieshan Logenathan and Shivan Singh in the final. Shivan waltzed away with the bowling award with Saieshan, who

notched up a mammoth 78 runs claiming the batting award. Abubaker Makhwasha was awarded for his brilliant fielding.

KwaDukuza Primary dominated the under 13 double-wicket tournament with Trevall Naidoo joining forces with Dylan Subrayan to beat fellow school-mates Suveer Dewlall and Wasim Suleiman in the final. Dylan,whonotchedupaphenomenal76 runs was voted batsman of the tournament with Suveer (four wickets) claiming the bowling accolade.

Sohail Mitha of Manor Primary was voted best fielder with Dylan being crowned the player of the tournament.

The Umhlali pair of Nikhil Govender and Yache Perumal were crowned U11 champions after beating the Zakarriya Muslim pair of Ashraf Ali and Humza Ismail in the final.

EWLY crowned SAFA Ilembe Regional League (Southern Stream) champions, Siyaya Football Club, have set their sights on participating in the SAFA VodacomLeagueinthe2014/2015season.

Eight teams converged at the Recreation and Manor Grounds on Sunday to contest the SAFA Ilembe Regional League play-offs, with the winner gaining automatic promotion to qualify for the SAFA Vodacom League playoffs.

Siyaya were grouped alongside Real Chappies of Mandeni, Eyethu of Maphumulo and Nkobongo of KwaDukuza in pool A. In pool B, Liverpool, Inguga and Moonlight of KwaDukuza were

grouped together with Real Magic of Maphumulo.

Matches were played in two pools on a league basis with the runner-up and winner in each pool set to contest the semi-final and finalscheduledfor Sunday, 25 May at the Recreation Ground.

Siyaya kicked-off their campaign with a hard fought 1-0 win against the powerhouse of Mandeni, Real Chappies, thanks to a brilliant goal by their talisman striker, Nqobani Mhlongo.

Nkobongo got off to a disappointing start after sharing the spoils with Eyethu in a dull, drab, goalless draw.

They needed to get back on the winning trail and opted for four strikers in their clash against Siyaya.

Man-of-the-match Mhlongo put Siyaya ahead in the 15th minute.

Midway into the firsthalf,Siyaya suffered a huge blow after their first choice goal-keeper, Zakhele Ntineza was injured in a robust tackle with the lanky Nkobongo striker and had to be replaced with Thembinkosi Zulu.

He (Zulu) proved to be a valuable asset, making some brilliant saves and a match-winning one in the dying minutes of the game to deny Nkobongo a goal (sending them virtually crashing out of the tournament).

Real Chappies were blown out of the competition after slumping to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Eyethu.

Having secured maximum points (six) with two wins from two matches, Siyaya approached their match against Eyethu cautiously. The 1-1 draw was enough to see Siyaya finish at the top of pool A to secure a semi-final berth. Eyethu finished

Moonlight lost their opening fixture (2-1) against Inguga, but sent Liverpool crashing out of the tournament with a comfortable 2-0 win. Inguga stayed in contention for honours with a 3-1 win against the hapless Liverpool outfit.

Real Magic shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Moonlight to finish at the top of pool B and will do battle with Eyethu at the Recreation Grounds on Sunday at 11.30am. Inguga secured second spot to book their place in the semis against Siyaya, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday at 9.30am.
