HE Anamalay family of KwaDukuza is struggling to come to terms with the death of their 32-year-daughter Vaneshree Anamalay Moodley, her three-year-old son Kevaal and the child’s pregnant care-giver Vinola Nxumalo, who died in an accident on Sunday.

Nxumalo was killed instantly while Kevaal, Vaneshree and her husband Lloyd were taken to Umhlanga Hospital and Alberlito Hospital.

Due to severe internal injuries, both Kevaal and Vaneshree died a few hours later. Lloyd and their six-month-old baby girl Sharania, who was in a car seat, were the only survivors.

The funeral service for Vaneshree and Kevaal took place yesterday (Wednesday) at the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall.

Both were cremated at the KwaDukuza Crematorium.

Concern over dangerous accident area MERVYN KRISHNA YET another accident occurred,on what is now becoming a “notorious ac­ cident spot” on the old Tinley Manor road heading towards Shakaskraal on Thursday last week.

Reports from the scene indicate that the driver of truck failed to nego­ tiate a bend near the railway station and veered off the road.

The truck landed on its side across the railway lines and burst into flames.

Emergency Medical Rescue Servic­ es personnel attended the scene to­ gether with the KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Services.

The driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries. However, accord­ ingto concerned resident, ManilalSar­ joo, this is not the first accident to oc­ cur at the dangerous bend, where countless lives have been lost.

He questioned what authorities are doing to solve the problem. Sarjoo said various measures could be put in­ to place to curb accidents.

“There are no boards to warn driv­ ers of the sharp bend ahead,no speed humps to reduce speed and no proper crash barriers to prevent vehicles from ending up on the railway lines.

“How many more lives need to be lost? In this case no lives were lost, but what would have been the conse­ quence if a train was on its way, and drove into this truck?”

ATRONS opened their hearts and wallets to support Child Welfare SAKwaDukuza at the launch of Winter Fair 2014 on Friday at the Boat House in Ballito.

The launch raised more than R320 000.

The biggest sponsor was Vivian Reddy of Edison Power who injected R75 000 into the fair as part of Edison’s corporate social responsibility.

It was also decided that this year’s Winter Fair will be called the Child Welfare SAKwaDukuza Edison Power Group Winter Fair.

On behalf of Reddy, CEO of Edison Power Megan Govender said they had a moral obligation to assist the poor and needy.

“We urge all those that are not already involved to align themselves with the society, which caters for the underprivileged.”

Presidentof Child Welfare SA-KwaDukuza for the past 25 years, Pravin Sham gave a brief history on the society and the work it does.

Sham was also full of praise for Winter Fair director Sundeep Oudhram and his dedicated team, staff and volunteers for their “wonderful” work during and before the Winter Fair.

The second biggest sponsor was businesswoman Moriri Khoza, who donated R20 000. Khoza said when she was invited by Oudhram, she did not know what the launch was about.

“However, after listening to the address

by Sham on the work the society does and the projects it maintains in the underprivileged communities, I decided to come on board and make a pledge.”

Khoza went on to say that she now wants to get fully involved with the society.

Oudhram said moving the launch to Ballito really paid off.

“Over the years, the launch always took place in KwaDukuza. The maximum number of guests was about 70 and the most we raised was R185 000, which was a few years back.

“We had more than 200 business people and individuals attended the launch at the Boat House,” he said.

This year’s fair will be held from Thursday, 26 June to Sunday, 29 June at the KwaDukuza Recreations Grounds.

Notorious local criminal nabbed near hospital

MERVYN KRISHNA A WELL-KNOWN criminal who is currently out on bail for attempted armed robbery was caught red-handed after breaking into a vehicle outside Stanger Hospital last week. The suspect was arrestedwithaCDdeckinhispossession by members of N-Force Security after they were called by the owner of the VW Golf that was broken into.

Niven Govender said he had parked his car outside Stanger Hospital and went for his weekly physiotherapy treatment when the incident took place. “When I came outside at approximately 8:30am, I noticed someone inside

FAMILY of five including four children has been left destitute after their home was razed to the ground last week.

The four-room wood and iron house in Ward 15, Khoza Section, Ntshawini was burned down in the early hours of Tuesday morning. At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown. Although the family managed to escape the flames unscathed, valu-

ables including identity documents, birth certificates, clothes, furniture and appliances were incinerated Zetho Gumede, one of the family members, said they were left with only the clothes they were wearing.

Gumede told the Weekly she was woken by one of her children who told her the room was on fire.

“When I went to investigate, I saw the flames were reaching the roof. I managed to get everyone out of the houseand alerted the neighbours, but

by then the fire was raging uncontrollably. We could not save any of the items that were in the house. It is very sad because we lost everything, from food, important documents, school books, furniture. We are left with nothing.” The Weekly has since contactedtheANCregionalsecretaryMuzi Sithole, who deployed KwaDukuza municipal officials to assist the family.

Brazen mall robbers on the loose

BRAZEN robbery has sparked fears amongst shopkeepers that a gang of mall robbers will hit even more shopping centres in KwaDukuza.

This comes after eight armed robbers walked into Clicks at the Ushaka Mall last week and made off with baby food.

According to reports, there were four men and four women in the gang, each brandishing firearms.

After robbing the store, they got into a VW Golf GTi with Richards Bay registration plates and a Polo Playa with an Empangeni registra-

tion and fled. A businessman next to Clicks noticed the incident and contacted Field Security.

Officers Alpha Msibi, Vanessa Govender and Denver Marimuthu responded.

When the officers were driving into the mall parking lot, they noticed the Polo Playa and gave chase.

Officer Marimuthu said they could see the Golf and followed the Polo Playa. “During the chase, the driver failed to negotiate a bend at the intersection of Balcomb and Chief Albert Luthuli Streets,” said Govender.

“The vehicle’s front tyre burst.

The suspects kept going until we forced the vehicle to stop. The driver

managed to escape. We arrested a female and handed her and the vehicle over to the KwaDukuza SAPS,” said Govender.

Later that night, Govender was called by the KwaDukuza SAPS to come to the station because the “owner” of the vehicle came to retrieve his car, which he claimed was stolen.

“However, when I went to the station, I noticed the suspect who was driving the Polo Playa in the station.

I told the police that he was the driver.” She said the suspect was placed under arrested and detained.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

ORTH Coast “institution” Ann McDonnell will be leaving her post as Ward 22 councillor to take up a Democratic Alliance seat at KZN provincial legislature.

She was sworn in at a ceremony in Pietermaritzburg last Wednesday.

McDonnell has been confirmed as a member on conservation and environmental affairs and tourism committees, with alternative portfolios of transport and local government.

Although she will no longer have offices at the municipality, she will still be based in the area and says she hopes to still address local concerns from an oversight position.

McDonnell says she will also draw on the knowledge of locals for her portfolio.

“I am pleased with the assignations, as environmental issues and especially tourism is very relevant to KwaDukuza,” said McDonnell.

After the 2014 general elections, the DA holds 10 of the 80 seats in KZN legislature. McDonnell was nominated for a seat last year, and went through a screening process to get in.

She has hit the ground running, saying she has already been contacted by the media to comment on issues such as the recent rhino killings at Tala Game Reserve near Pietermaritzburg.

“What is great about the position is there is a really good team to work with.

“I will have access to researchers and there is a good communications team. I think we can achieve a lot.

Frustration with the local IEC OUR recent election adminis­ tration under the IEC has brought about much debate around the country.

Sitting in as a party agent at various voting stations within the KwaDukuza region, I was totally infuriated by the poor administration by IEC staff.

Here are a few incidents I personally encountered: The RA Padaychee School had five sub stations. The principal of­ ficers were not sure if you were allowed to vote at a vot­ ing station you were not regis­ tered in if you were from an­ other province only, or if you were from KZN as well.

In one of the other sub sta­ tions, you were allowed to vote irrespective of whether you were from KZN or not; such confusion within the same voting station.

This proved that our IEC officials do not know what they are doing.

In Tinley Manor, a voter was registered within the ward but was not on the vot­ ers roll. Poor administration again. In Shakaskraal, when a recount was done, it appeared that ballots from one party were mixed with another.

This indicating again that we have incompetent staff working within the IEC; or can we say this was a deliberate act?

At the Sizani Primary School the DA party agent was allowed to sit in wearing a blue T­shirt, which is DA

colours. Even though his T­ shirt had branding of another company, it was not impossi­ ble to read the party he repre­ sented. This again shows that IEC officials just don’t know the rules.

The lack of skill from the IEC staff shows that our elec­ tion process is not taken seri­ ously. For a process which de­ termines the management and direction of our nation, we could at least request that IEC officials and staff meet certain criteria before being appointed to work in an event as big as this.

We are living in times when much scrutiny is given to the corruption within our govern­ ment. In saying this, is our election process under the guidance of the IEC also part and parcel of the corruption within our country?

IF you ask any scientist why they do what they do, you will obviously get varying answers. An undergraduate might tell you something very different to a post doctorate student – who at this stage would have asked him or herself the same question with increasing frequency over the years.

I could run out of op-ed space explaining the reasons why science is important in our lives, but for the purpose of this column I will only tell you that it is to vanquish ignorance and exercise a healthy dose of skepticism. Too many of us are victims of pseudoscience, myths, misconceptions and incorrect use of science thanks to marketing ploys.

Ignorance can be easily overcome, but if you throw a dash of ego into the mix, you have a misguided sense of self-preservation when it comes to “touchy” issues such as creationism, vaccination, evolution, alternative medicine and nutritional information. Thankfully, we can save

ourselves big headaches if we apply the simplest tenet of science, which boils down to “assume nothing and question everything”.

Science journalism exists not only as a fact-checking tool, but as a standard by which we practice healthy skepticism - not cynicism - to better ourselves and others intell ectually.

URING the course of our lives, we may perform strenuous activities, carry heavy objects and somehowbeplacedinsituationswhereourbod­ ies and muscles become overloaded. This means a particular joint is unable to handle the strain.

As a result, the surrounding and overlying struc­ tures, viz. muscles, ligaments and tendons become ex­ tremely tight. When these become tight, TRIGGER POINTS are formed.

TRIGGERPOINTSareirritable,hard,painful“knots” within a muscle, that may cause pain over a larger area or refer pain distal to the source of the “knot”. These lead to restrictions in movement of the muscle and joint. The patient may complain of excruciating pain, inability to move an area, inability to walk, carry ob­ jects, sit for long periods and the muscles and spine or joint may feel tight and tired. The patient may be fatigued due to constant pain, spasm and restriction.

Sleep may become impossible as the patient is un­ able to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in.

On awakening, there may be excessive stiffness and pain.

Dry needling is a technique where a thin, dry needle is inserted through the skin, into this trigger point. This process is used to reduce the pain that may arise from thetriggerpointbyreleasingthesetightbandsofmus­ cle. The circulation is increased and nerve functioning of the area restored. The healing time of patients’ is significantly reduced.

Swimming club holds inaugural meeting JYOTHI LALDAS THE first meeting to establish a swimming club was held at Stanger Manor Secondary School on Tuesday last week.

The meeting drew interested members of the community who expressed excitement for the venture.

Amongst the many issues discussed was the need to teach members to swim and embrace a culture which has been found to be lacking in the community.

According to one of the initiators, Dr Kiren Gokar, a number of drownings occur every year, which peak during the summer months.

He said the “Learn to Swim” campaign initiated by the club would drastically reduce this fatality.

“The club will also be registered with KZN Aquatics so as to derive maximum benefit from their coaching structures.

The interim constitution was presented and the name of “Manaqua” Swimming Club (MSC) was suggested.”

Gokar said the community is welcome to suggest names for the club.

“The club will seek to build on a partnership with Stanger Manor Secondary School and hopes to include members from the school governing body as well as staff.”

Members of the community who are interested in joining are urged to come to the second meeting on Wednesday, 25 June at Stanger Manor Secondary School at 6.30pm.

N informative talk by Peter Rose, chairman of the Umhlanga Tourism Community Tourist Or­ ganisation (CTO), on the way forward fortourismintheiLembeareawasheld at Hirsch Ballito last week.

More than 60 people who are all in­ volved in tourism attended the brunch.

Rose, who has chaired the CTO for 10 years, stressed that it’s up to the pri­ vate sector to promote tourism wher­ ever they are.

“The CTO should not only be seen as comprising a large established body of tourism players, but should also comprise all sectors in the tourism in­ dustry.

“CTO’s are run by the private sector and they organise and run functions to help promote tourism in any area.”

He pointed out that the CTO’s draw up a set of regulations that are up to speed, and establish a link between communities, the private sector and

government.

He said that members of the CTO pay a nominal fee to join, and it was in their interests to do so to help in­ crease tourism in their area.

“The CTO in Umhlanga has grown from 30 members in 2005 to over 700 this year and we now have a thriving website with over 250 000 hits a month.

“The power of tourism is in your hands.

“You need to drive it. It must be headed by a tourism business owner.

“TheroleoftheCTOmustbeofeco­ nomic benefit to the whole communi­ ty.”

Grant Pringle, the managing direc­ tor of Hotel Izulu said that Ballito was in the process of setting up a CTO with guidance from the KwaDukuza Munici­ pality and a fair amount of progress has been made.

ROVE End Volleyball Club, who dethroned reigning champions KSST to clinch the EZE’S Electrical Competitive League in 2013, outwitted their arch-rivals (KSST) in straight sets (2-0) on Thursday night to claim pole position at the summit of the log table.

KSST led 15-10 midway into the opening set, forcing their rivals into a timeout. Grove End rallied back through successive attacks from Neven Baldeo and the big-hitting Vinnie Singh to reduce the deficit to a solitary point (15-16) before forcing Syd Kistan’s charges into a timeout.

Too many unforced errors by KSST at the death, saw Grove End forge ahead 22-20 before Carnel Joseph was introduced into the attack.

But, it was a typical case of “too little, toolate”,withGroveEndholdingonto a nail-biting 25-23 win.

KSST were under immense pressure throughout the second set despite the concerted efforts of Cameron Singh and Sherwin Daniels to keep them in contention for honours.

KDAC athletes gear up for Comrades Marathon WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Athletic Club athletes are in an upbeat mood ahead of the 89th running of the Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday, 1 June.

The Comrades Marathon is undoubtedly one of the greatest ultra marathons in the world where athletes come from all over the world to combine muscle and sinew to complete the gruelling 89km course.

Danny Sewmungal, Jay Ramnath, Melody Ndlovu, Dippy Moodley, Paddy Padayachee, Yathin Narothum, Pradeev Dhora, Leon Moodliar and Jaibalan Soobramoney of KDAC will join more than 18 000 athletes to tackle the 2014 Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

DARNALL Squash Club got off to a winning start in the Dolphin Coast Squash Second Division League after beating Salt Rock II (11-6) in an enthralling encounter played at the Darnall squash courts on Thursday night.

Sixty-seven-year old BJ Mansfield gave the home team a glimmer of hope, levelling the scores at 6-6 after beating the talented Vanessa Brown in straight sets (3-0). In the final match of the evening all eyes were on Rico van der Wath, who was making his debut in the Second Division League.

YETHU Football Club qualified for the SAFA Vodacom League playoffs after emerging victorious in the final of the Ilembe Regional League promotion playoffs played at the Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Favourites, Siyaya suffered a shock2-1defeatatthehandsofIngugainthefirstsemi-finalclashonSunday.Afteragoallessfirsthalf,leading goal-scorer in the competition, Nqobani Mhlongo put Siyaya ahead in the 65thminute. Siyaya’s joy was short-lived ten minutes later after

Nkosinathi Duma snatched an equaliser (1-1). With barely minutes remaining on the clock and the scores tied at 1-1, Tobias Bele sent Siyaya crashing out of the competition with a late goal to give Inguga a 2-1 win.

In the 2nd semi-final clash, Eyethu led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a stunning strike by Simphiwe. In the 85th minute Wiseman Cele was brought down in the box and the referee did not hesitate to award Real Magic a penalty.

Eyethu were crowned SAFA Ilembe Region champions after winning the penalty shootout (4-3) and will do battle with the winner of the other districts (date and venue to be confirmed)intheSAFAVodacomLeague playoffs.

President of SAFA Ilembe Thulani Gumbi thanked the local organizing committee (spearheaded by Magnum Mngadi) and commended all teams on the spirit in which the games were played. He congratulated Eyethu and wished them every success in their endeavour to participate in the SAFA Vodacom League in the 2014/2015 season.
