iLembe a renewable energy hub >> Business urged to ‘think before they invest’ in renewable energy opportunity SHANNON HOPKINS

>>shannon.hopkins@media24.com

T

HE ILEMBE District has been identified as a renewable energy hub for KwaZulu-Natal. The industry surrounding the venture is said to potentially create jobs and opportunities for business owners. At a networking breakfast for interested parties at the Salt Rock Hotel on Friday, representatives fromtheDepartmentofEconomic

Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and company Arup Energy Consulting, who have done research in the area, spoke on the matter. Enterprise iLembe acting CEO Zakhele Gumede provided background to the project. He said certain industrial economic hubs were being allocated to various areas across the country with renewable energy being stationed locally. “It is about creating an area where the manufacture of renew-

able energy equipment can be manufactured and to create sustainable energy projects. “We encourage the business sector to invest in this project,” said Gumede. EDTEA project manager Moroasereme Ntsoane explained the main branches of the greater project also included sectors of tourism, local maritime activity, the King Shaka International Airport and budding aerotropolis and environmental management. He said the total cost of the renewable energy hub is R150 million and it would create about 4 000 jobs. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

The existence of a number of mills and vast areas of sugar cane (denoted in red) makes biomass a viable renewable energy option for iLembe.

‘We want to spread economic development’ “The aim of the greater project is to indus trialise and modernise our economy. We want to spread economic development outside the main areas in the province – Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay. The aim is also to respond to the chal lenges facing the global economy and ad dress issues on inequities. “To do this, we foresee creating clus tersofcompaniesthatcandelivermoreto gether than alone – that can create linka ges to bring their costs down,” said Ntsoane. He said the renewable energy aspect would also alleviate poverty, attract in vestment in green industry goods and ser vices and promote a highgrowth industry. He said various concepts such as solar energy, hydropowerandbiomass, withthis lastbeingthemostviableduetothesugar cane industry, had been explored, “There is not enough solar energy po tential to support the area on a large scale, but it would work on a small scale,” said Bowden. He said hydro energy had been looked into extensively, with the inland site of Jameson’s Drift inland along the Tugela

River being promising. The site could produce 31MW at a low cost. The Mvoti River would only provide 3.5MW at a high cost. In terms of biomass, Bowden said the Sugar Association SA estimated the in dustry had the potential to generate 712MW, creating 38 000 jobs. This would involve the burning of bagasse, a sugarprocessing byproduct. Bowden said CO2 emissions from the proc ess were minimal to none. He said industry leaders are also look ing electricity production, with some al

Young boy drowns at Blythedale A 15-YEAR-OLD boy from the Ntshawini area near Stanger is presumed to have drowned after disappearing into the sea at Blythedale beach on Friday. Specialised Rescue Unit’s Quentin Power said the teenager had still not been found on Tuesday. Reports indicate the pupil had skipped school to go swimming

with friends. The beaches had been closed due to high seas. Apparently the boy got into difficulty and disappeared under the water. A lifeguard on duty had allegedly left the beach briefly, but by the time he returned the boy was gone. Rescue teams and microlight owners scoured the area, with no

Groutville have been assisting and residents and fishermen were scanning the shores since Saturday morning. “I had also requested the assistance of the local ski-boat clubs to keep vigil with all their members’ craft in the event one of them may see something,” said Power. — Supplied.

achievements of the society including the Groutville Community Care homes which has been their biggest project thus far, funded by the Flemish government. She also said since its opening in 1939 the society has grown in leaps and bounds. Outgoing president Sham thanked

Boston bursary applications THE future depends on the choices we make today. Boston City Campus & Business College knows that selecting the right path for your future is no easy task, and in offering an extensive selection of degrees, diplomas and college courses – there are more than 100 study options available – it will also help prospective students make that decision. At Boston there are just so many study options available, covering studies in media and multimedia studies, information technology, accounting, marketing and sales, tourism, hospitality and leisure, to name but a few. On an annual basis, Boston City Campus & Business College as well as Boston Media House award bursaries to pupils based on various factors. The selection criteria are based on a number of aspects including the pupil’s grades, family and financial situation as well as, but not limited to, leadership potential. Bursary applicationsareconsideredtwiceayearbythe bursary committee. Studying in the tertiary environment takes a great deal of commitment as well as other resources, therefore anyone completing an application must have seriously thought through their career and qualification, and be prepared to dedicate themselves to their studies. Since bursary awards are limited, accepting one means that should you decide not to further your studies, other people will have lost out on their chance to study. Please give serious thought to the application. Bursary applicants are required to complete the application form online or visit the Stanger branch for assistance. The deadline is 15 November. Note, you may also consult with a career adviser at the branch on other possible bursaries and payment plans for your career of choice. For more information visit www.boston.co.za

BOUTH a million years ago, some guy named Maslow, who had way too much time on his hands, put together a triangular hierarchy of needs, detailing what he thought were the most essential things for people to be in possession of. Ever since, high school and university students around the world have been falling asleep in lessons

Big bang again ISIMPLYcouldnotresistincommentingon Sibusiso’s column: “Yes, but no one was around during the big bang”. Indeed, your friend is right in questioning this theory be cause it simply is not factual and science is based only on facts, period. Thebigbangisatheorythatsoundsim pressive on the surface, but simply does notholduptoextensiveexamination. Here is how the big bang is often presented: somewhere between 18 and 20 billion years ago, all of the matter in the universe was compressed into a tiny space no larger than a dot on a page. This dot spun faster and faster until it exploded, thuscreatingtheuniverse. There are many problems with this theory. And thetheoryitselfstilldoesnotanswermany important questions, such as where did all

and lectures while the teacher, as boredashisorhersubjects, droneson about this hierarchy. The soporific effect of Maslow has even been felt in examinations, where students have failed courses due to falling asleep in papers which included questions about Maslow and his blasted hierarchy. So, to sum up this hierarchy so quicklythatyouwon'thavetimetofall asleep, Maslow states that the first level of needs pertains to physiological matters. Food. Air. Excretion. Sleep. In other words, the basic elements required to not be dead. His second level of needs relates to security needs — a job, health and property. The third deals with love and belonging. By rights, Maslow should get a mentioninthe credits of every gooey chick-flick ever made. On level four, getting to the stuff

that Maslow thinks only the elite reach, sits things like self-confidence and earning the respect of others. On the fifth level is the lofty notion of self-actualisation, a word not spoken outside the halls of academia since 1850. This encompasses traits like morality, creativity, and the ability to be non-judgmental. Here are the problems I have with Maslow — his ideas are poncy and outdated, and have no resonance with the 21st century. Most of all, I take exception to Maslow's belief that one cannot reach level two until you have level one wrapped up, and so on. To my non-academic brain, this implies that no homeless person can be creative, that no unemployed person can have moral scruples, and that insomniacs can never fall in love. Also, as a person who relies upon my creativity (level five) for my bread and butter (level one), I assure you

that my bodily functions are all in order. In 21st-Century South Africa, in which each economic recession is worse than the last, each president more corrupt than his predecessor and where everything is uncertain, doesoneeverpermanentlymovepast level one. Or does one cling to the attributes of levels two to five in order to sustain level one? Here's how, in my opinion, a 21stCentury list of needs looks. There are no levels, because all are as imperative to truly living as the next: oxygen (as pollution-free as possible); a roof over our head (brick and mortar for the fortunate such as myself); friends (to provide a roof when one's own is taken away by the bank); a passion and a purpose (without this there is little point to getting out of bed), self-confidence (or at least the ability to fake it, because nobody likes or employs a wallflower), and laughter(becausewithoutthis, breathingis futile).

the matter in the universe come from? If all the matter in the universe was com pressed into a small dot, what caused this to happen? Where did gravity come from thatheldittogether?Ifthisdotspunrapid ly until it exploded, then where did the en ergy come from to start the spinning? Also, in an environment without friction you would have this spinning dot going so fast it would then explode. If this happened, then all of the particles and matter being expelled from this spin ning dot would all have to spin in the same direction as the dot they exploded from. This is a known law of science, which those who believe in evolution cannot do away with. It is known as the Conservation of Angular Momentum. This matter, which is said to have created the planets, would all need to spin in the same direction as the object it came from. So therefore, all of the

planets should be spinning in the same di rection. However, two of them are not. Ve nus and Uranus spin backwards. Some planets even have moons that not only spin backwards, but travel backwards around their planets. The big bang theory also ignores the First law of Thermody namics, which says: “Matter cannot be cre ated or destroyed.” Those who believe in the big bang theo ry are also either unaware of, or ignore the "Second Law of Thermodynamics" which says: “Everything tends towards disorder.” So rather than the chaos (big bang) be coming ordered (our universe), just the op posite would be true. And it is. Our complex universe is wearing down and becoming more chaotic. The big bang theory also teaches that in another 80 to 100 billion years, all of the matter that makes up our Earth and solar system will become com

pressed again. A big bang is said to occur every 80 to 100 billion years. As absurd as the big bang theory is, it is widely accepted because the only other choice is a divine creator. And some people will believe the most ridiculous theory, rather than even entertain the possibility that there could be a Creator. As I see it, there are only two choices. Either someone created the Earth, or the Earth created itself, (despite all the known Laws of Science saying it couldn't have happened this way). In conclusion: those big bangers, evolu tionists, atheist scientists should instead be as constructive as other scientists in finding cures for diseases and solutions to other environmental problems rather than seeking to confuse people with their theo ries of no use to anyone. Challenge to men IDOtalksatschools, encouragingteens to make the right choices in life when it comes to choosing friends, smoking, drugs, alcohol abuse, bullying and por nography. When it comes to pornography, our children have access to the internet on their cellphones, or friend's cellphone, as well as the traditional magazines, strippers and DVDs. In my talks I stress how easy it is to become a porn addict, and how de grading it is to women, to be seen pure ly as a sexual being. By indulging in porn, one is supporting the industry, and in most cases, making immoral people wealthy, at the expense of the dignity and respect of women. Most men, driven by testosterone, have a weakness for the trap of por nography, and unfortunately, porn is made light of at times, and not seen for the dangerous addiction it is. When our children learn that their parents indulge in pornography, it makes the practice almost acceptable, or at least, “not that bad?” “After all, if my parent(s) watch porn, how bad can it really be — just harmless fun, surely.” Iaskthequestionoftheschoolboys I talk to: “How would you like that woman, in the porn scene, to be your mother or sister? Degrading isn’t it?” Here is a challenge to all those who might relate to this letter. Let's set the example to our chil dren, and make our homes “porn free”, as much as we possibly can. Let us throw the “trash” into the trash, where no one else can access it. And if it's appropriate, do it with your teenager's company and/or buy in. Let them know that your household does not believe in degrading women, but believe that women need to be seen as God's creation, deserving of re spect, not just a physical body for man's pleasure. To think we did not say goodbye. Will always bring regret. But hearts that always loved. Never will forget It broke our hearts to lose you. But you did not go alone. For part of us went with you. The day God called you home. A silent though, a secret tear. Keeps your memory ever dear. God took you home, it was his will. But in our hearts, you live still. Nothing could be more beautiful. Than the memories we have of you. To us they’re very precious. Because they are of you.

Sugan Munien, who had a shocking first set, started to find his rhythm and combined well with Ganasen to restore Sunbrook’s lead (14-11), forcing the “sugar-cane” lads into their 1st timeout. With the scores tied at 20-20, the facial expression on the faces of the Sunbrook bench (compared to that of their opponents) revealed their confidence in their heroes. Fans expected Darnall to succumb to the late pressure, but they silenced their critics, holding onto a thrilling 25-22 win to clinch the Moon & Sons Agencies KO Cup. In an earlier game Cool Leaders trounced Virgo 15-12; 15-12 to secure a podium finish. Medals, lunch and cool drinks — sponsored by Tewary — was given to all participants, parents and coaches. Trophies were awarded to the winners and runners-up and special awards were presented to the best batsman, bowler and fielder of the tournament. With fellow team-mate, Suhail Mitha injured on the tournament, Jaden Pillay of Manor Primary decided to join forces with Kyle Chinakanoo of North Coast Primary. This pair proved to be a formidable combination, crushing the opponentstosetupasemi-finalberthagainstJaredTikaramandJadynNaidoo of Manor Primary. Kyle (15 not out) and Jaden (6 not out) batted first and posted 21/0 in their two-allotted overs. Chasing 22 runs for victory Jared and Jadyn scored 10 runs from the first five deliveries before Jadyn (5) was clean bowled by Kyle off the last delivery of the first over. The responsibility fell on the shoulders of Jared to beat the more fancied duo of Jaden and Kyle. In the other semi-final Shahid Naidoo (2) and Akhil Sewchand (11 not out) of Manor Primary batted first and posted 13/1 in their allotted 2-overs against Shravan Maharaj and Arveer Maharaj. Shravan (2 not out) and Arveer (6 not out) booked their place in the final (thanks to the six extras conceded by their opponents. The final proved to be a dull, drab affair after Shravan was run out for a duck in the 2nd delivery of the match. Arveer was caught for one run in the next delivery by Jaden off the bowling of Kyle.
