New beginnings at Woodmead development

AFTER years of waiting and watching, the Woodmead Integrated Housing Development project finally launched in grand style at the Etete site last Friday.

Invested officials from Standard Bank, National Treasury, Urban Housing and the KwaDukuza Municipality gathered at the already constructed two-bedroom show house on site.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu and Standard Bank KZN provincial director Toy Mzimela together with the local ward councillorGNMbonambiofficially cut the ribbon to mark the start of the project.

The project forms part of government’s initiative to integrate South African society by delivering decent human settlements for a better quality of life.

The Woodmead partnership is a mixed use development, which includes residential, industrial, retail and commercial components.

Since the conception of the project the Sasko Bakery has been completed at the site and forms part of the industrial component.

The project has potential for 802 affordable housing units in the area where bulk services are already available and in total could boast 2 500 residential stands.

However, the entire reach of the project is 320 hectares.

Aside from housing the development will include a 15 000sqm shopping mall and a dedicated transport node.

The municipality is spending R45 million through its Neighbourhood Development Grant for infrastructure development on the project, this aside from the investment by the private sector.

The municipality has also recently completed a R9 million access road upgrade in the area specifically for the project. Currently, there is a contractor on site working on the public transport facility, which is being built to enhance the commercial node.

The launch of the first phase of the Woodmead residential component comprises 224 units.

Speaking at the launch, head of Affordable Housing and Pension Backed Lending Product at Standard Bank Group Nolwazi Nzama said home ownership is the cornerstone of a strong community.

“Standard Bank wants people to own their homes and to have a stake in their future. We are confident that this development will unlock the potential home owners within our community. We are also excited about Woodmead becoming a hub for growth on the North Coast and in KZN.” An excited Mthembu said the main purpose of the development is to close the gap between the low income, middle income and high income sectors.

“Weconcentrateonthelowearners and non-earners and the high earners, but the middle income sector is all but ignored in most communities. They take care of themselves and we forget them,

“The fact that they have installed a new rates act regarding State buildings paying next to no rates has an onerous tone that the government is finally running short of funds due to corruption.

“The man in the street will have to bear the burden. This act as defies all logic,” he said.

Motala’s Farm robbers arrested >> Quick thinking police get their men JYOTHI LALDAS FIVE suspected robbers were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after a brazen attack at Motala’s Farm on the outskirts of KwaDukuza.

A joint operation by KwaDukuza police assisted by the Durban Flying Squad, Tracker unit and a local security company led to the arrest of the five suspects a few hours after the business robbery was reported.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker police followed up on information which led them to a house in Reservoir Hills where they found the five suspects.

“A safe, computer and electronic appliances believed to be taken during the robbery were recovered.”

Naicker said in the early hours of Sunday morning two security guards were on duty at the business premises when

they were approached by the group of suspects.

It is alleged that the suspects held the security guards up and removed the safe, computer and electronic appliances. “The suspects also took two vehicles from the premises before they fled the scene. Later, one of the vehicles, a truck, was found abandoned in Shakaville.

“The second vehicle was found abandoned at Clermont area near KwaDabeka.”

A case of business robbery was opened at the KwaDukuza police station for further investigation.

“KwaDukuza police immediately mobilised their members and other units to look for the suspects which led to the arrests,” said Naicker.

Allfivesuspectsagedbetween30 and40yearsoragesappearedinthe KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court facing charges of armed robbery.

The outcome of the appearance was not known at the time of going to press.

HE delivery of textbooks for pupils next year is well on track at schools in the iLembe District.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha together with iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe visited Vukile High School and Joel PrimarySchoolintheMaphumuloarea last week where 70 percent of the learning material had already been delivered.

The visit formed part of provincial government’s programme to ensure that the learning material is delivered on time to schools so that teaching andlearningcanbeginonthefirstday of school next year.

The MEC said she was optimistic that before the end of this year the schools in the area will have received all their textbooks for next year.

“The reason why we have embarked on this programme is because we want to ensure that we address all the challenges the schools might have regarding the delivery of textbooks before they reopen next year,” said

Stating the facts I

N an article that appeared in a local newspaper recently it has been stated that electricity losses have been going on from the 2010/11 financial year and furthermore, the councillors from the ANC and IFP were furious about these losses.

I would like to remind the residents that the ANC has been and is currently the ruling party of the KwaDukuza Municipality.

After being elected as an MF councillor in the 2011 Local Government elections, I have been very vocal with regards to the electricity losses

which then stood at about R23 million.

I have brought this to the attention of the ANC in several full council meetings.

I have been bold enough in asking whether the measures are being enforced or officials being inefficient or there being no political will by the ANC to alleviate such great losses.

Although the mayor has responded that the measures implemented has been ineffective, he denied that there is political will.

May I bring to the attention of the chairperson of the technical services committee, that in most cases you need not search for illegal connections and the culprits as it is a known fact that there are thousands of illegal connections in certain areas by some sectors of the community.

These illegal connections traverse roadways and pathways and are clearly visible.

In some cases there have even been injuries and deaths due to these illegal connections.

Now, are some ward councillors afflicted by blindness or are they safe guarding the voter bank by not reporting the illegal connections?

KwaDukuza residents should not expect a miracle in reducing electricity losses as we are well aware the Local Government 2016 elections is approaching and one does not expect the ANC to take drastic measures as this would affect the support in the 2016 elections.

So the paying consumers should brace themselves for further increases in electricity tariffs or await bankruptcy of KwaDukuza Municipality.

I appeal to the ANC to work in the best interest of rate payers, instead of safe guarding the support to the political party.

Furthermore,officialsshouldnotbeunnecessarily blamed for the losses, as some of the high ranking officials are political appointees and they would perform at the master’s will.

Oscar trial and hypocrisy DURING the course of the Pistorius case, I have often wondered where the ANCWL and Jacob Zuma were during the trial of Leigh Matthews to sympathise with her family as well as all the women who are murdered in this country almost daily.

There are no ANCWL people in the courts with the bereaved families and no Zuma contradicting the judge’s decisions.

It is only now, because Pistorius is a high-profile case, and there is media and TV coverage worldwide, that they are visible. What a bunch of hypocrites.

MEC vows to monitor housing project KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Public Works and Human Settlements Ravi Pillay will oversee the implementation of the Ward 1 housing project in KwaDukuza.

“I am going to monitor this project, day by day between now and over the next two weeks to see that the commitments that we make happen.”

Pillay was speaking at Sakhamakanya in Dorinkop last week reporting on the housing project which will cost government over R260 million.

The project is one of the biggest in the province.

The area was recently hit hard by service delivery protests prompting the speeding up of the project.

KwaDukuza council members accompanied the MEC in his very first visit to that area where he promised to offer his fullest support to the community.

He said the people of Ward 1 must stand united to overcome challenges.

SA Dakar quad team ride for rhinos >> Riders aim to conquer the challenge for a good cause

EAM Rhide SA, comprising Brian Baragwanath and Hannes Saaijman, will take on the 2015 Dakar Rally in January.

Baragwanath has won multiple titles in the quad category in the SA Nationals, SA National off-road, local Pro events and a top finish in the AMA ATVA Nationals in the U.S. Saaijman achieved victory in the 2014 Q2 Class Challenge and is a veteran off-road rider. Both riders will tackle the tough Dakar for the first time in the quad category.

Team Rhide SA is riding for the Save The Rhino campaign, hoping to raise international awareness of the

rhino poaching epidemic in South Africa. Baragwanath said: "I always wanted to compete in the Dakar. This is one event that has always been on my to do bucket list. The same applies to Hannes and in 2015 it's all going to happen.

"We have spent months preparing and it's all coming together with some generoussponsorsandpartnerssuch as Melicia Labuschagne, GM of Liqui Moly SA. Hopefully there will be more coming on board before the end of the year, as the entry fee for this event costs a fortune.

Hyundai, Kia to triple green cars

Doctor sets recovery time for Schumacher

ARLIER in November Wheels24 reported that Hyundai and sister Korean company Kia will pay the United States government a penalty equivalent to R1.1 billion to end a two-year investigation into "overstated" fuel consumption claims on about a third of its vehicle products.

Following the investigation, the automakers announcedaplantotriplethenumberoffuel-efficient cars by 2020, addressing concerns about the pair's green track record and competitiveness in fuel economy.

The announcement on Wednesday, 12 November came a week after the pair pledged to raise the fuel economy of their vehicles by 25% by 2020 to meet emissions regulations in the U.S. and Europe and at home in South Korea.

It also followed an announcement on Tuesday 11 November that the pair would buy back R6 billion worth of shares in what was widely regardedasanattempttoappeaseinvestorsangered by a R100 billion bid for property for new headquarters.

AnalystYimEun-youngofSamsungSecurities said: "Investors have complained about Hyundai's lack of shareholder-friendly policies and communicationaboutitsvision,especiallyafter the land deal.

"Today's announcement seems to be part of its efforts to soothe shareholders and better communicate with the market."

Under last week’s plan, Hyundai and Kia will raise their number of fuel-efficient cars to "at least" 22 by 2020 from seven now.

Hyundai, Kia said in a joint statement: "We have set an internal target of making it to number two in the global eco-friendly car market, which is expected to grow from this year's 2.2 million vehicles to 6.4 million in 2020."

Hyundai and Kia plan to release 12 models powered by gasoline-electric hybrid engines, expanding the line-up to small cars and sport utility vehicles.

The pair's green range will also have six plug-inhybridmid-sizedandcompactcars,two fuel-cell cars and two battery-powered electric cars.

A DOCTOR who treated Michael Schumacher for nearly six months after the Formula 1 champion struck his head in a skiing fall says the injured ex­driv­ er is no longer in a coma and predicted a possible re­ covery within three years.

Jean­Francois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoble hospital that treated Schumacher after his injury in December 2013, said he has visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerland to track his patient’s progress.

Schumacher was with his 14­year­old son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock and cracking his helmet.

“Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages.

We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payen last Thursday.

He predicted a convalescence of one to three years.

Earlier French F1 commentator Jean­Louis Mon­ cet repeated a report that Schumacher was “waking up very slowly” from the induced coma controlling his serious brain injuries.

Moncet said: “I saw his son and he told me Schumi was waking up very slowly, very slowly.”

A man, who allegedly stole Schumacher’s medical records and who was allegedly at­ tempting to sell them to dif­ ferent media for $67 000 (about R7 350 000), worked as an executive at a Swiss hel­ icopter air rescue company, which organised the German sportsman’s transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June.

The man, arrested and inter­ rogated by police, had denied any wrongdoing. He was being detained in a Zurich police holding cell, but was found hanged when officers took him breakfast before a scheduled hearing before a judge.

Grove End dethroned reigning champions KSST in 2013 and at the start of the 2014 season KSST were determined to reclaim the title. There was little separating both teams at the end of the third round of competition.

Isithebe Paints will be watching this match closely when they entertain Darnall Action Sporting. Should Isithebe Paints win and Gledhow lose their match against Nev­ il’s Auto, the calculators need to be brought out of the closet to calculate the points ag­ gregate before announcing the league champion.
