WADUKUZA will experience a total electricity shut down between 6am and 11am on Sunday.

As a result of copper theft at the Point of Supply (POS) in Gledhow, KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) is forced to undertake major repairs at the POS to avoid major electrical failure during the festive season.

At a media briefing at POS on Monday, KDM’s infrastructure and technical portfolio chairperson Sandeep Oudhram said KDM, with the assistance of contractors, will undertake the replacement of a switchgear.

“The switchgear, in an electric power system, is the combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment.

“At the moment the quality of electricity supply is compromised. Now the urgency of this repair arises because currently their is no breaker to protect the system from a complete failure in the event of a malfunction, say for example, on the Glenhills power line,” said Oudhram.

He said in the event of a fault such as lightning damage on the Glenhills line, a surge of power will be sent directly to the POS. “Now, because there is no switchgear, since we removed the damaged one, there is no control over the surge.

It will go directly to the supply from Eskom and shut down the entire electrical supply for all areas within the KwaDukuza Municipality.”

Oudhram said they cannot afford for this kind of damage especially during the festive season because it will cause a total blackout in KwaDukuza and all other areas within the municipality for no less than 24 hours.

“We cannot allow this to happen when most residents are on leave during the festive season so it is imperative that we get these repairs done immediately,” said Oudhram.

KDM have already notified residents about the shut down via advertisements in local media.

According to Nick Hall, KDM director of electrical services, full maintenance of the power system will also be undertaken during the shut down.

“The reason we are shutting down power entirely is to ensure that the repairs are not compromised and lives are not endangered.

“For us to do the repairs we have to get on top of the live structure and we cannot do this if there is power surging through. We have taken all factors into consideration before undertaking this task and we have found that this is the best way to ensure untainted supply to our town.

According to the statement, under these low flow conditions, the river bed is visible and when observed, can be seen as dark in nature.

“The odour and appearance of the river are unfortunately negative aesthetic side-effects of the low-flow conditions; however, other factors have played a role in exacerbating this condition.”

The mill is in the process of installing Fine Bubble Diffuser Technology to try and improve the impact of its effluent into the river.

“The implementation of this technology shows positive results on waste water treatmentoperations,citingreducedodourfromthe processes as well as reduced chemical oxygen demand in the effluent,” the statement said.

In order to allow for the installation of the fine bubble diffusers, an existing unit in the lagoon had to be relocated.

Sappi claims during the relocation phase and the commissioning phase, the mill anticipated a slight increase in odour and a slight decrease in effluent quality and notified the Department of Water Affairs accordingly.

The estimated completed date for the project is this month (December). The statement further said to date the mill has not experienced such impacts as a result of the project.

“Since 21 September 2013, the mill has experienced approximately 25 power outages, of which 15 were experienced since the beginning of the 2014 winter period to middle spring.

“We acknowledge that we do have an environmental footprint, but remain committed to managing and mitigating the environmental impacts of our operations and as part of this we strive to proactively meet the environmental commitments embodied in our Sustainability Charter.”

In addition and in an ongoing effort to manage and monitor its effects on the river, the mill alsocontinuestoengagewithDr.Gordon‘OBrien, a professional natural scientist, of the Institute of Natural Resources for Biomonitoring AssessmentsoftheuMvotiRiver.“Alowflowassessment was conducted in August this year, with a high flow assessment planned for early this month.”

HE iLembe District Municipality in partnership with the Department of Labour and the Department of Public Works held an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workshop to improve lives of poor and unskilled community member.

EPWP is one of many programmes offered by government to alleviate poverty and provide income relief through short-term to medium-term work opportunities for the unemployed.

Taking place at the iLembe Auditorium in KwaDukuza, the EPWP workshop was, according to iLembe’s Project Management Unit manager Ndumiso Mkhize, aimed at finding ways to improve the overall performance of the programme in the region.

“We are here to share information with contractorsaswellasconcernsandchallengessowe can move forward as a district and not have certain areas and communities doing well and others not,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of iLembe regarding EPWP, Mkhize said the municipality was in the process of identifying existing programmes that can be aligned to EPWP as well identifying new social programmes that could be expanded.

Nqobile Makhathini, a social sector facilitator from the Department of Public Works said the programme was mainly for the unemployed and unskilled. “The main purpose is for the people to acquire experience and earn an income to improve their livelihood,” she said.

Child Welfare South Africa (KZN) addresses death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo THE horrific death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo has cast the spotlight on the shocking incidences of child abuse that we, in Child Welfare movement, face on a daily basis.

There has been wide scale condemnation and with it the apportioning of blame. If there is blame to be apportioned, then we as a community in general should take collective responsibility.

This death shows the wanton deprivation that is prevalent within the society and need for collective effort.

This case has also highlighted

the plight that the Child and Family Welfare Societies face with regards to insufficient funding to fulfill its mandate.

Thefundingthatsocietiesreceive bywayofSubsidyfromtheKwaZuluNatal Department of Social Development ranges between 47 to 52 percent of the organisation’s operating costs.

The deficit has to be met through fundraising initiatives. This issue has been raised on numerous platforms bothprovinciallyandnationallywith little or no success.

Fire brigade visit THE theme for Trinityhouse Pre-Primary this week was fire.

On Wednesday 12 November the Fire Brigade arrivedforavisitjustastheGrade1sand2sfrom the Preparatory School was about to leave for their Swimming lesson at the Palm Lakes Estate Pool.

They decided that they would rather stay and enjoy the talk by the fire fighters, an inspection of the fire truck and most important, the foam party afterwards.

Luckily they were all dressed, ready to get wet.

ARNALL United Volleyball Club hosted a glittering awards banquet on Saturday night honouring players, officials, sponsors and patrons.

Brandon “Pops”Naidoo, speaking on behalf of manager, Vinesh Geanballey said: “There have been ups and downs throughout the 2014 season, but although we did not win the league, we were offered an opportunity of developing a sense of brotherhood, both on and off the courts.

“The success of the club must be attributed to the kind generosity of Trevor Sinivasen who readily

ploughed thousands of rand into the club and pledged his commitment to the Darnall United VC for the next five years.”

Guest of honour deputy mayor of KwaDukuza councillor Dolly Govender, a keen sports woman in her heydays who excelled in netball, athletics, shot putt and javelin in her high school days, said: “It is important that as players and officials we leave behind a legacy.

“ThelateChinGovenderwhowas responsible for training our champion boxer in KwaZulu-Natal, Tap Tap Makhatini left behind a legacy and similarly, we must always strive to leave behind a legacy for others to follow.”

She encouraged parents to give their children support in sport and encouraged the women in Darnall to play volleyball and affiliate a team in the league in KwaDukuza.

President of KwaDukuza Volleyball Association, Isaac Abraham congratulated Darnall, who emerged KDSA Social league runners-up in their first year since joining the association at the beginning of 2014. They avenged their league disappointment after beating newly crowned league champions, Sunbrook in the Moon & Sons Agencies K.O. Cup. He encouraged the leadership and players to invest in the youth.

Abraham said: “Darnall boast a wealth of talented youngsters and it is important that we teach and nurture them in the game of volleyball in ensuring the sustenance of the club.”

Samuel Moonsamy was over the moon after he scooped the most dedicated player award. Skipper Duran Moodaly claimed the MVP (most valuable player) award. Nishendra “Niknaks” Dhaver was adjudged the players player of the year.

WEEKLY REPORTER ILEMBE Netball hosted a bumper Ilembe District netball tournament at the KwaDukuza netball courts on Saturday which brought down the curtains on a successful netball season.

The cream of the netball players from each of the four local municipalities (KwaDukuza; Ndwedwe; Maphumulo and Mandeni) converged at the netball courts to strut their netball shooting skills.

The Ilembe netball team which will be participating in the 2014 SALGA Games in Dundee next week was invited to participateinthetournamentinthehopeofgiving those players an opportunity of gelling together as a unit ahead of the provincial tournament.

WEEKLY REPORTER THE beautiful game of soccer,under the aegis of KwaDukuza Local Football Association, is marred by inept referees.

On Saturday in a KLFA Premier League game between Tornado and Tigers Football Club yet another horrendous display of poor refereeing cost Tornado three points, who had to settle for a share of the 2-2 stalemate.

Khumbuzo Siyangaphi broke the deadlockinthe15thminutetogiveTigers a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Nhlahla Msimang was deemed to have been offsideandthelinesmanimmediately raised his flag.

The referee looked at the linesman and allowed play to go.

After Msimang scored to level the scores at 1-1, the referee allowed the goal to stand and came to consult with her assistant.

After a chat which lasted almost five minutes, the linesman threw his flag on the ground and walked away.

After being intimidated by the Tigers players and coach the referee changed her decision and ruled that Msimang was offside.

Tornado threw a tantrum and the referee walked out of the game.

Senior referees who were scheduled to officiate the SAFA Ilembe games an hour later approached the referee to advise her that if she overruled the linesman in the first instance then she must let the goal stand.

A dejected Tornado coach, Sphamandla Mazibuko said: “Where on earth have you seen referees walk out for more than 15 minutes and consult with the president of an organisation before returning to the match.

“We pay more than a thousand rands for affiliation and pay the referees for every match, not to get this kind of treatment.

“How can you referee a game dressed up jeans and expect to give one hundred percent?

“Officials of KLFA must get a referees board in place and appoint referees for every game, not such pick someone from the ground looking for a quick buck”.

Magnum Mngadi, KLFA competitions co-ordinator, was not available for comment at time of going to press.

AN-of-the-match Alveiro Nadasen inspired Ilembe to an impressive 154-runs victory against Phoenix in a KwaZuluNatal Challenge League game played at the Rainham Ground in Phoenix on Sunday.

On Saturday, Dawnheights B trounced Doringkop by 6-wickets in an Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 League game played at the Country Club Ground and on Sunday, Dawnheights trounced Newlands by 4-wickets in a KwaZulu Natal Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground.

In the match on Saturday, Doringkop batted first and were bundled out for 67 runs in 20 overs. Geinani (25) was the only Doringkop batsman to record double digits.

Suveer Maharaj (2/15 from 4 overs) and Shrivaar Maharaj (2/6 from 2 overs) claimed two wickets each.

In reply Dawnheights B cantered to a resounding 6-wickets in 7.4 overs thanks to a “blitzvinnig” unbeaten 20 runs contribution from Suveer Maharaj which included four boundaries.
