HE country’s power crisis has reached critical levels. Eskom announced on Friday the pow-

er system in the country was “extremely constrained” and would remain so for the duration of the week.

It blamed “unforeseen technical problems at power stations, depleted water reserves and logistical issues relating to diesel supplies at our peaking power stations”.

SA’s power crisis critical THAMSANQA MAGUBANE and AMANDA KHOZA Eskom announced load shedding was extended from stage two to stage three as a result of the “shutdown of twoofouropencyclegasturbinepowerstationwhichusedieseltogenerate electricity”.

“The diesel reserves have been depleted at the Gourikwa and Ankerlig gas turbines leading to the shutdown of the power stations. The Drakensberg and Palmiet pumped storage schemes, which use water to generate electricity, have reduced outputasaresultofdepletedwaterreserves.

“A further 1 000 mW of capacity is offline after three coal-powered units tripped last night due to technical faults.”

Brian Bilton, a senior technical adviser for the Electrical Contractors Association, said level three was “the worst possible scenario”.

“All they need to do now is switch off the entire South Africa.”

Eskom warned that stage three load shedding would run from 6am until 10pm and again from 8am until 10pm, to build up reserves for the week ahead.

“Consumers can help alleviate pressurefromthesystembyreducing their electricity usage as much as they can.

“Eskom has also asked major customers to contribute by reducing their usage by 10 percent.

“Our objective for load shedding this week is to fill the pumped storage dams, fill diesel tanks and undertake essential maintenance. Our aspiration after that is to avoid load shedding if at all possible until mid-January,” chief executive Tshediso Matona said.

“Unfortunatelywecannotguarantee this, but we will put in every effort over the festive season to avoid interruptions,” he added.

DESPITE a dire need for more education institutions in the Ballito area, the KwaDukuza Municipality is adamantly attempting to stop the establishment of a private school in the area.

According to the KZN Department of Education the growth of the area de­ mands more educational facilities and the school has already enrolled 250 pu­ pils and employed 14 teachers.

KDM launched an urgent application in the Durban High Court boycotting PLG Schools’ plan to open the Ballito Acade­ myinJanuarynextyearatwhatwasonce a hotel in Nandi Mthembu Drive that is no longer in use.

According to KDM representatives, PLG Schools require special consent for theschoolandtheirapplicationthatwas filed in November, would only be consid­

ered by council in March 2015.

A counter application has since been launched by PLG Schools claiming that KDM is breaking a rule that states special consentapplicationsmustbeconsidered within two months.

PLG Schools claims it has been liais­ ingwithKDMofficialssinceearlyOctober regarding the opening of the school.

Among the reasons given by the mu­ nicipality for the opposition of the open­ ing was that the school does not have a certificate of occupancy.

According to a KDM official a hotel premisesisnotsuitableforuseasschools without proper alteration, however, no building plans have been submitted.

He also said it is important to them as a municipality to ensure that the building is safe for occupation.

It has been announced in local media that the school can accommodate 1 100 pupils.

PLG School’s counter application aims to compel KDM to consider the special con­ sent application.

Both applications have been ad­ journed until 17 December.

The prostate gland is, in its healthy form, the shape and size of a walnut and sits at the base of the bladder surrounding the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder).

As every male gets old the gland undergoes changes enlarging with age. In some men this en­ largement remains benign (non­cancerous) and in others it does become cancerous. This growth usually occurs from the age of 40.

In South Africa it is the most common solid organ cancer in men. Prostate cancer is rare under the age of 40. After the age of 50 this incidence rises steeply and by the age of 80, almost 80% of men will have prostatecancer,evenifitisjustasmallfocusofcancer.

It is also important to note that not every man that gets prostate cancer will die of the disease. This is due to it not being has aggressive as other cancers. In South Africa, prostate cancer appears to be equally common in men of all race groups.

There are certain foods which may protect against prostate cancer. These include tomatoes which con­ tain lycopene. Vitamin E, selenium, soy and Omega­6 fatty acids are also thought to have benefits. Dietary factors which may increase the risk of prostate cancer include saturated fat and red or grilled meat.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important in re­ ducing the incidence of prostate cancer. Studies have shown that maintaining regular exercise and an aver­ ageweightdirectlyreducestheriskofprostatecancer.

There is a direct family link to prostate cancer with the risk being two to three times higher in males with first degree relatives with prostate cancer.

To date, a yearly through physical examination and simple blood test called PSA has been shown to increase the pickup rate of early cancers and hence early treatment before the disease advances.

ORTH COAST young rhythmic gymnast Nikhishah Ramesh recently represented KwaZulu-Natal in the 2014 South African GymnasticsGamesheldattheGoodHope Centre in Cape Town returning with a gold under her belt.

Nikhishah, 12, has been training with the Bluff Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy since she was five-years-old.

The dedicated and tenacious young gymnast has earned her KwaZulu-Natal colours five years in a row since 2010.

She finally achieved a bronze medal overall position at the National Games in Durban in 2013.

Thisincludedasilverforclubs and bronze for dance, setting the goal for 2014.

Nikhishah bagged gold for hoop, silver for ball and silver for clubs, thus securing gold as the overall first position champion in the Level six under 13 division.

Nikhishah now heads off to Namibia, where she will compete in the Zone VI International Games this month.

OOL Leaders were crowned Play Sport Concept-sponsored KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Corporate League champions after beating Friendz (25-22; 23-25; 15-11) in an enthralling final played before a huge crowd at the association courts on Wednesday night.

Cool Leaders snatched a thrilling 25-22 win in the opening set before ringing in the changes at the start of the second set.

The rotational system adopted by Cool Leaders backfired after Friendz grabbed a sensational 25-23 win to level the scores at 1-1 and push the

game into a third and decisive set.

In the final set, Shane Ramraj and Ron Reuben were firing on all cylinders and everything they touched turned into gold. They gave Friendz a comfortable 8-2 lead at the change of sides in the final set.

WEEKLY REPORTER GLEDHOW United ended the 2014 darts season on a high note after clinchingtheDilleyPuckreememorial darts league title (hosted by KwaDukuza Darts Association League).

United came into Wednesday’s game boasting three wins on a trot and were hoping to keep an unblemished record in their quest for honours. But, breathing heavily down the neck of United were Isithebe Paints and R & B Gledhow, who notched up two wins each.

Isithebe claimed maximum points (36 points) after Darnall Action Sporting conceded their third walkover on a trot. They watched theR&BGledhowandUnitedclash with bated breath, hoping that United slump to a humiliating defeat in the hope of snatching the league title from the jaws of death.

There were no prizes for guessing who Isithebe were supporting, but they were left red-faced after United cruised to a 4-2 win in the opening frame. The Isithebe lads found their voices in the second frame after R & B Gledhow levelled the scores at 6-6 (after winning the second set 4-2).

The third frame was fiercely contested and the 3-3 draw was a fair reflection of the game. R & B Gledhow won the 4th set (4-2) to take the lead (13-11) for the first time in the match. R & B Gledhow realized at the start of the 5th frame that they had an opportunity of annexing the league title (pending the points difference), but the excitement overwhelmed them which was evident in their 4-2 loss in the 4th frame.

With the scores tied at 15-15 at the start of the final frame, the calculators were flying all over the venue (with some players using their smartphone apps) to calculate the points aggregate. R & B Gledhow needed to win the final frame 6-0 in the hope of leapfrogging to the top of the table.

But, United who lost the final frame 4-2, did enough to snatch the league title (boasting a superior points aggregate of 48 points). Isithebe Paints (42 points aggregate) claimed the runners-up spot with R & B Gledhow finishing third.

President of KwaDukuza Darts Association, Jerry Govender congratulated United on their outstanding feat and thanked Mrs. P. Puckree for her generous R1 500.

Bubble bursts for Ilembe WEEKLY REPORTER THE high riding Ilembe Cricket Union outfit were brought down toearthaftercrashingtoahumiliating 138-runs defeat at the hands of Newlands East in a KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League game played at the Newlands Oval on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. Aaron Pillay, who has been in rich vein of form with the ball made an early breakthrough after clean bowling Saleem Gelani for one run in the third over.

The hosts quickly put the early setback behind them with Ajmal Haq and Ahmed Akthar putting on a splendid 76-runs partnership for the second wicket.

Haq, who frustrated the Ilembe bowlers looked in fine mettle before being brilliantly run out for 31 runs by Rocky Ngobhozi.

Akthar scored a painstaking 37 runs which included three fours and a huge 6 before he was caught at mid-off by Preshen Rampersadh off the bowling of AlveiroNadaseninthe29thover.

Shoaib Wasim and Waqar Saleem took the tally from 97/3 to 131/4 before Wasim was caught

by Nadasen off the bowling of Rampersadh. Raja Zulifkar (2) was sent for an early shower after being caught at point by NgobhozioffthebowlingofNadasen.

Hussan joined Saleem at the crease at the start of 37th over and this pair quickly added another 33 runs to the tally (175/6) before Hussain (16) was clean bowledbyPillayinthe42ndover.

The Ilembe bowlers came back strongly at the death, but it was a typical case of “too little, toolate”afterArshad,Zahailand Mohamed were dismissed without getting off the mark.

Saleem (56) notched up his maiden half-century in the KZN Challenge League before falling prey to a Pillay delivery in the 48th over. The hosts posted a mammoth 197/10 in 48-3 overs.

Pillay was the pick of the Ilembe bowlers claiming 4/40 from 9.3 overs. Nadasen grabbed 2/30 from 10 overs. Iqbal Sher (0/16 from 10 overs) was absolutely economical with the ball despite not getting a wicket.

Chasing 198 runs for victory (at a rate of almost 4 runs per over), Ilembe were confident of getting their target.

But, their dismal performance with the bat resulted in them being humbled for a paltry 59 runs in the 21st over with none of the batsmen recording double-digits.

Man-of-the match Saleem, who notched up 56 runs earlier in the day was the destroyer-inchief for Newlands claiming 4/12 from 8 overs. Mehmood grabbed 3/16 from 5 overs and Sajid Khan claimed 2/12 from 6 overs.

Ilembe will be hoping to put the disappointing performance behind them and get back to the basics when they entertain Umlazi at the Country Club Ground on Sunday.

ROUTVILLE United and Current Football Club shared the spoils (3-3) in an enthralling KwaDukuza Local Football Association (KLFA) Premier League derby game played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Current were awarded a penalty as earlyasthe10thminuteaftertheirprolific striker Nata was brought down in theboxthrougharecklesschallengeby the United keeper.

Bheki Magwaza converted the resultant spot-kick to give Current an early 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later Lungani Zibani squandered an opportunity of doubling Current’s advantage after his close range shot missed the target by centimetres.

In the 20th minute the Current defender, Msizi Mbonambi was deemed to have handled the ball in the box and the referee did not hesitate to award United a penalty. Mpilo Mthembu calmly beat the Current keeper from the spot to level the scores at 1-1.

Five minutes later Ndumiso Ndlovu received a perfect cross from Majaha andthein-formUnitedstrikermadeno mistake from just outside the box, beating the Current keeper with a low, rasping drive to give United the lead (2-1) for the first time in the match.

United’s joy was shortlived after Lungani Zibani beat the Current keeper with a long range shot to level the scores at 2-2 (going into the break).

Midway in the second half United

reclaimed the lead (3-2) after James “Rasta” Chivale’s powerful header whizzed past the hapless Current keeper.

The Current coach made three changes in the hope of swinging the pendulum in their favour.

He brought on striker Themba Bhengu (in search of an equalizer), midfielder Nthuthuko Msomi (to marshall the engine-room) and right back Stalin Mabuzo (to thwart the efforts of United’s left winger Chivale).

In the last quarter of the match United were content to sit back and resolutely defend their 3-2 advantage.

But, they paid the price in the dying minutes of the game after Bhengu weaved his way past two defenders before unselfishly passing the ball to the unmarked Thobezwene Zikhali who beat the United keeper with a thunderous drive to give his side a share of the 3-3 spoils.

Meanwhile,thearticleinlastweek’s Stanger Weekly “The beautiful game marred by inept referees” has elicited both a positive and negative response.

On the positive side, Magnum Mngadi (KLFA Competitions Co-ordinator and Refereees Instructor) summoned an urgent meeting of all referees on Saturday morning addressing them about their dress-code and the laws of the game.
