A

PROMINENT imam was shot and injured in a drive-by shooting at the Dawnside Shell service station in KwaDukuza.

It is believed that hit men were responsible for the shooting on Sunday, however, Pandor was not the target of the shooting.

Pandor,animamattheStangerJamia Musjid, had taken his brotherin-law Farouk Randera, who was visiting from Gauteng, to see a mechanic near the service station.

They were both in Randera’s Toyota Yaris, which had tinted windows, when the shooting occurred and Randera was also wounded.

The shooter was in the back of a bakkie with three other men.

According to a source at the scene the Yaris was hit 23 times, mostly on the door on the passenger side.

According to local police a taxi boss had been killed at the same garagelastweekinwhatwasbelieved to be a taxi-related shooting.

It is believed that the GP registration of the car lead the suspects to believe it was carrying hitmen from a rival taxi boss.

Zwane, confirmed on Monday morning a case of attempted murder was being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS. “The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage. No arrests have been made,” said the policeman.

Randera was discharged from hospital on Sunday night.

He suffered two bullet wounds to the leg while Pandor remained in hospital under observation as a bullet went through his abdomen and lodged near his stomach.

Rodney Meyrick from IPSS Medical Rescue said that there are many deep holes in the river bed due to illegal sand dredging, creating air pock-

ets in the river bed and once stepped on, the air pocket gives way.

TWO boys drowned in two separate incidents over the weekend.

In the latest incident, on Sunday a five-year-old boy reportedly drowned while playing in the Tugela River.

Police Search and Rescue divers and IPSS Medical Rescue were called to the river at about 6pm to begin a search for the child however, they were unsuccessful.

They returned on Monday morning to continue looking for the child and the search went on to Tuesday (yesterday).

The river is known to be teaming with crocodiles.

On Saturday a 12-yearold boy drowned while attempting to cross the Umvoti River near the Umgeni Water Works.

HE family of Siyanda Sibiya (23) is distraught after Sibiya was beaten to death by a mob after accusing him of stealing a cellphone on Saturday morning in the Melville area near Groutville.

His brother is trying to come to terms with the brutality displayed by the community.

The brother of the victim, who wished to remain anonymous, was woken up in the early hours of the morning with the news that his brother was being assaulted.

“I arrived at the casualty ward at the hospital at around 11:45am and they told me he had died. I was not allowed to see him as I was told his injuries were gruesome,” he said.

According to Sibiya, his brother was beaten beyond recognition, with “every weapon conceivable that people could beat my brother up with.”

Sibiya said he couldn’t bear to watchtheincident or see his brother in the state he was in, but witnesses present told him that his brother was severely beaten with weapons and

KDM to establish illegal connections unit JYOTHI LALDAS FOLLOWING the electrocution of an Ntshawini woman, the KwaDukuza Municipality will establish a special unit to deal with illegal electricity connections.

This was announced at the funeral of domestic worker Princess Ntuli, who was electrocuted by a live wire from an illegal connection near her home.

Speaking at her funeral on Sunday, KDM executive committee member Sduduzo Gumede said the municipality realised that when housing settle-

mentswerebuilt,informalsettlements came up next to them.

“The squatters then illegally tapped into the electricity supply causing many injuries and deaths.”

Gumede said in Ntshawini alone there are 5 000 homes, however, due to illegal connections, the local electricity grid had become strained.

“We are establishing a special unit that will deal with illegal connections,” he said.

A family spokesperson said they, especially Ntuli’s three children, are struggling to come to terms with her death.

"We have to accept that she is gone

now and there is nothing we can do about it."

Ntuli’s husband was also injured while trying to rescue her.

Gumede pleaded with the community to stop making illegal connections as it is life threatening.

"There are children playing here right where there are illegal connections.

“What if one of your children is electrocuted by your very own illegal connection? What will you do then?

"I appeal to this community to stop connecting electricity illegally. People have died and more people will die if this does not stop."

KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johannes Khoza, confirmed that the incident occurred.

“This is one of two incidents in the Melville area and there are others in areas such as Ntshawini where the community is taking the law in their own hands by killing suspects.

“No previous cases were reported before the incidents, but we see the community committing these atrocities. We urge that these activities stop,” said Khoza.

FIVE women were killed when two vehicles collided at the Fort Pearson turnoff on the R102 on Sunday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident but an eyewitness told IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst that a gold Toyota Corolla, with five women inside,wascomingfromP110,going towards the R102.

“We were told that the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and a white Isuzu bakkie T-boned it.”

All five women died at the scene.

Herbst said the driver of the Isuzu was in a critical condition and was rushed by advanced life support paramedics to hospital.

KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the jaws-of-life had to be used to extricate the injured man from the wreckage.

“After being freed from the ve-

hicle, the patient’s condition improved,” said McKenzie.

In another accident on the R102 in KwaDukuza, in front of Desai’s Cash and Carry, two vehicles collided on Monday afternoon.

IPSS Medical Rescue responded and Herbst said three people were injured.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

IPSS Medical Rescue and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) transported the injured patients to hospital.

Two people were injured in another accident on the R102 near the steel bridge intersection on Saturday afternoon.

According to Herbst, who attended the scene, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

“Both vehicles crashed into the barrier leaving two people with moderate and minor injuries.”

SKOM has warned that without additional funding to buy diesel, load shedding willbecontinuousandongoingbecause the utility won’t be able to operate its open gas turbines, reported Eye Witness News on Tuesday 13 January.

Reportedly the utility says the power grid remains vulnerable and any technical issues or gener-

ator problems may force it to implement rolling blackouts at short notice.

In order to keep up with demand, the utility has been running open gas turbines broadly during the past few months, spending billions of rands to buy diesel to operate them.

A case for atheism

Terror attack in Paris FOR me the quintessential part of Islam is the following beseechment every Muslim makes every day: “It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path - the path of those upon whom You have bestowed(Your)favour,notofthose who have evoked (Your) anger or of those who have gone astray.”

This is the essential prayer.

As a seeker of the straight path, I unreservedly condemn the heinous murder of innocent people in Paris by those with sickness in their hearts and mind.

May the unity of the millions who stood shoulder to shoulder on Sunday in Paris be the beginning of a human bond that will work for peace and justice in the world.

This is the time too for Israel and Palestine to seize the moment and reach rapprochement with urgency.

This is also the moment for the world to put extreme pressure on Assad to pull Syria back fromthebrinkofchaosthatisengulfing the world; and on Saudi Arabia to heed the call of Amnesty International and stop its brutal punishment of blogger Raif Badawi seeking the right to freedom of expression.

To tread the straight path, narrowly, is the only moral and political way forward.

AM an atheist. I have come to realisethatIwasbornonejustaseveryone else is. This includes you, your family and all your friends.

Others may refer to me as an infidel, others a lost soul, some might even think me the anti-Christ.

These labels and others are quite effectiveatturningmanyahereticinto a believer.

An atheist, by definition, is an individual who does not believe in God. Going further, not believing in God does not necessarily mean you automatically are certain that he (or she or they) does not exist.

Atheists do not generally claim to

know for sure what they do not, but we can, with certainty, spot bovine feces.

If reliable evidence would be found and a falsifiable theory proving the existence of God, then the atheist would start “believing” in God without the burden of faith, but by the fulfilling use of reason in light of reliable evidence.

Atheists do not try to disprove the existence of God as his existence has never been proven in the first place.

The atheist would rather point out the holes in your religion, which they are in abundance both in the holy books and the actions of devout fundamentalists and extremists.

Children are born not knowing of God and it is at a tender age they get indoctrinated into believing that there is a God. It takes a lot to convince a child that God exists as they are coaxed intoforegoingtheircommonsenseand the use of their senses to believe in the unseen.

As a child, you start to believe in God yourself as you are told that the unconditional love of your God will unleash his wrath should you choose

not to love him back. It is like this in some traditional religions, at least.

A lot of us get the atheist beaten out of us from subliminal threats of socialexclusionifwedonotconform.

So we give in to the beliefs of the elders and our peers although it goes against all of what we have independently learnt about the world.

We stop caring. We stop asking.

We already know what the answer is for everything.

Who needs evidence when you have faith? Faith becomes everything. We start seeing manifestationsofit(God)everywhere,inplaces where there is no such God. We start to believe that he has a predetermined plan for us, which we have no control over, yet we still find ourselves praying to him.

The atheist in each of us keeps rearing its ugly head begging us to seereason.Reason?Whoneedssuch sacrilegious nonsense? It is pure blasphemy, the works of the devil himself.

We are told of a God who creates the universe, creates us himself with predetermined plans for all of us.

Knowing full well what would happen, he still kills almost all of us to

EXACTLY three weeks ago we received a call from an elderly woman residing at an old age home. She informed us that she could hear a small kitten crying, but was unable to ascertain where the distress call was coming from.

I immediately followed the sound and found a very small abandoned kitten alone at the entrance to the community hall, sitting beside an upturned cardboard box.

I picked her up and continued searching for any other kittens.

I then found an even smaller “dumped” kitten sitting very quietly in a dark corner.

It appeared to me that this little creature had given up hope as he did not call out nor move at all unlike the other one, whose calling saved both of them.

ItookthemhomeandphonedtheSPCA in Ballito. We were told that the kittens were between 10 to 12 days old and were too small for the SPCA to take them. They were so small that they could hardly walk, but wobbled along mostly gliding on their stomachs.

Our grateful thanks go to the SPCA and especially to Nathi and Dennis for securing some kitten pellets and milk formula for us to feed the kittens adequately. There are still some good people around amidst the cruelty to animals that prevails.

The kittens were too small to lap milk from a saucer. My wife and I fed them their milk with a small eye dropper. We did this fortwoweeks.BythegraceofGodtheysurvived and started eating softened solid kitten pellets mixed with some small soft

chicken portions in gravy via a sachet.

Three days ago they started lapping milk and eating from a saucer.

We also trained them to use a “sand box” for their needs which they use diligently. They are completely house trained and love to be held and cuddled by ourselves.

Unfortunately we have not allowed them to play outside as there are many viciousstraydogsandcatsaround.Anumber of cats and kittens have already been killed by these stray animals.

Sadly, we are not able to keep these kittens as they have not been exposed to survival tactics and are very vulnerable.

They both need a safe and loving home, where they will be together forever being loved and pampered for life.

They were together from birth, abandoned together, survived together, rescued together and have lived with us, together, since we found them.

We pray that a loving and caring family, living on the Dolphin Coast, will adopt both of them, so that they can live the rest of their lives together.

We estimate their age to be four to five weeks old, house trained and ready for adoption.

The residents have to pick up the bill.

We have reported this to the municipality, but nothing has been done.

“The third thing is to think about where and how you are going to repeat. Dependingonyourageandschoolpolicy,youcould return to the school you have just left; or you could enrol full or part time in a school focused on either matric or the last few years of schooling.”

CONSIDER ANOTHER HIGHER EDUCA-

HILE some matrics may be have performed at their very best, many others have to deal with the realisation that they did not have performed well enough to pass or qualify for their chosen field of study.

“This is traditionally a harrowing period for matriculants who feel that under-performance could sound the death-knell for their hopes, dreams and aspirations,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, director of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education provider.

“These pupils now need all the emotional guidance and support they can get from those around them, particularly as it is essential that they regain a sense of perspective,” she says.

Coughlan adds that although disappointment, anger and anxiety may characterisethefirstresponsesfollowingunsatisfactory results, the sooner people are able to move to a solution orientation in the face of disappointment, the quicker solutions - which do exist - will be identified.

“Given enough space and support, most young people will regain a sense of control when they are able to make a rational decision about how to proceed.”

Options available to pupils who did not do as well as they hoped, include: WRITING SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMS “Here, consultation with the school is best as there are very limited circumstanc-

“These should include both private and public institutions. Remember that South Africa has only one quality assurance system, so if you enrol at a registered and accredited institution, there are lots of options still open in the private sector, which may suit you even better in terms of the level of focus and student support you will receive.”

CONSIDER A DIFFERENT COURSE OR PART-TIME STUDY While it may be too late to register at a public institution, private institutions often continue to accept enrolments if they have space left, and they generally offer a range of exciting degree, diploma and certificate courses.

“Full qualifications are however not your only option,” Coughlan notes. “You may also want to look at focused training or short courses.”

CONSIDER VOLUNTEER OR OTHER WORK OPPORTUNITIES It may well be that you need to spend the year working - perhaps while studying part time, says Coughlan.

“Opportunities to volunteer at community based organisations - full or part time dependingonyourpersonalcircumstances - should also be considered,” said Coughlan.

NFLATION and the rising cost of providing quality tertiary education has forced some KwaZulu-Natal universities to drive up fees beyond 10%.

University of KwaZulu-Natal increased both tuition and accommodation fees by 12% this year, and the sharp rise will see parents forking out once-off registration payments of R3 750 for courses and an additional R2 750 fee for students requiring accommodation.

University spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the increment was inspired by careful consideration of the social circumstances of students and wider consultation with university stakeholders.

“Inflation has negatively affected theallocationtotheuniversityfromthe state, making the current tuition fees paid by students inadequate,” she said.

“It is imperative that adequate financial resources are available to ensure our degrees remain highly competitive and respected globally.”

The institution received more than

90 000 applications for the 8 400 available spaces in the undergraduate academic programmes.

It provides accommodation for 12 086 students at on-campus and offcampus residences.

“Each year there is always more demand than supply for on-campus accommodation. To help curb the matter, the university makes use of private accommodation in and around our campuses.”

Fees at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) increased by 10% for both tuition and accommodation, and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) increased its fees by nine percent for tuition alone.

DUT’s registration fee has gone up to R3 420 for annual students and R2 100 for semester students.

If prospective students seek university accommodation, they will need to double the registration fee.

University registrar Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa said the institution received 81 518 applications for just 7 200 spaces available for first-year students.

FEVER REPORTER THE new year is traditionally a busy season for pawn shops as people try to recover from overspending. Local pawn shops say this year is no different.

“We were very busy over December. People mostly bought stuff and business picked up a little bit,” says Christo Nienaber. “They bought mostly televisions, speakers, cellphones, laptops and iPads,” he adds.

“While pawning was slow over December, it escalated after Christmas. People spend wildly in Christmas and then need to pawn. About 60% of customers return for their items the following month and 20% will pay interest to keep their items on pawn

for another month, while 20% goes on sale,” he says.

Nienaber says the biggest problem in the industryisthatpeopletrytosellphonesthat are on contract. The phone then gets blacklisted and can’t be resold.

Paul Wilson says during his 14 years in the industry, second-hand sales always spike in December.

“It is hugely varied. I deal a lot in tools and electronics, all commonly used stuff for do-it-yourself like angle grinders, which are much sought after.

“I find the things that most commonlysellwellaretelevisions and music equipment,” he says.

“Fees charged for accommodation in these buildings [leased] and range from R20 000 to R24 000 per annum.

In the Durban Centre, DUT has 4 956 beds. In the Midlands Centre, we have 2 897 beds. These include leased beds.”

The MUT registration fee remains R2 000forannualstudentsandR1 000 for semester students.

Spokesperson Lan Mzimela said they received over 20 000 applications for 2 000 spaces available.

“We are ready for registration as we started preparing as early as September. We have moved to a bigger venue [for registration] and our systems are set up,” he said.

University of Zululand spokesperson Noma Zondo said fees are likely to go up, but said the council and the Student Representative Council have not met to discuss the way forward.

“Unfortunately, the issue of fees has not been finalised,” she said.

Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshelasaidtheyreceived168 400applications last year, made up of 93 739 new applicants, and 74 661 returning students.

“From applications received, 89 046 met the minimum requirements. All these applicants will be accommodated during the current registration period, provided they still satisfy the admission requirements.”

The universities said students can register online to avoid long queues.

Wilson says January and February are big pawning months with children going back to university and school.

“Goldisaverypawnableitem—itissmall and easy to deal with. Other top pawn items are televisions, laptops and cellular phones, which he stopped taking because of the blacklisting issue.

His biggest concern is the way police deal with stolen goods.

“A fairly low number of items are being reportedasstolen.Inmostcasesitemsbeing sold as stolen is when someone took it from their employers,” he says.

“Items are, from a legal aspect, only stolen if the case goes to court and items are recognisedasstolengoods,butinmanycases the police take it upon themselves to repossessstolengoodsandhanditbacktothe claimant, but they have no authority to do that.”

SAPS PRO Captain Charlene van der Spuy says: “If someone reports a housebreaking or robbery and the owner identifies it as stolen property at the second-hand dealer, a SAPS officer can repossess the stolen goods with the case number as evidence.”

ARNESSING the power of online teaching for a personalised learning experience, Boston City Campus & Business College is proud to announce its affiliation with American GED Testing Service with the intention to provide more South Africans with a Grade 12 equivalency certificate.

“Today it has become critical to obtain a high school certificate. Without it, the likelihood of landing a quality, successful career is nearly impossible. For example at retail stores like McDonalds, even flipping a burger patty requires a matric certificate,” said Ari Katz, the CEO of Boston.

WHAT is Autism?

Autism is a complex neurobehavioral disorder that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors. A child with autism who is very sensitive may be greatly troubled -sometimes even pained -- by sounds, touches, smells, or sights that seem normal to others.

Pervasive developmental disorder or PDD - Also known as atypical autism. This is a kind of catch-all category for children who have some autistic behaviors but who don't fit into other categories.

Childhood disintegrative disorder - These children develop normally for at least two years and then lose some or most of their communication and social skills. This is an extremely rare disorder and its existence as a separate condition is a matter of debate among many mental health professionals.

These disorders may now be diagnosed as either a social communication disorder or autism spectrum disorder based on the primary impairments.

What Causes Autism?

Because autism runs in families, most researchers think that certain combinations of genes may predispose a child to autism. But there are risk factors that increase the chance of having a child with autism.

Advanced age of the mother or the father increases the chance of an autistic child.

When a pregnant woman is exposed to certain drugs or chemicals, her child is more likely to be autistic.

These risk factors include the use of alcohol, maternal metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity,

Living with Autism - Brady’s story >> A mother shares her story

A

T six years old Brady Luke Pillay is fighting the stigma of autism by defining his own success through all his achievements - big and small.

Brady was born at Alberlito Hospital in Ballito at 36 weeks into his mother’s pregnancy.

Brady was delivered after his mother under went an emergency caesarean section because doctors noticed he had a high heart rate when monitored at the hospital.

Through his mother’s words - Abidah Pillay: I first notices that something was different about Brady because he never looked at anyone. He would only look up with no eye contact.

He didn’t meet the conventional walking, talking, etc, milestones like other children his age and never used language to communicate.

Heranaboutaimlesslyandbecameobsessed with his toy cars, lining them up and playingonlywithhistoycarstheentireday.

He didn’t want to go to new places or meet new people in the first two years of his life. I was told he would come around, but as a mother I knew something was amiss.

I took him from doctor to doctor, paedi-

atrician to paediatrician, he had scans and tests done but nothing showed up. We had no answers, only more questions.

At just under age two Brady was referredtoDrANTHONYCLUCHLEYatStAugustines Hospital, a paediatric neurologist who diagnosed him with PDD-NOS (PERVASIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER) also called atypical autism.

Finally there was an answer, a reason, but also a label and a darkness and sorrow.

The thought that went through my mind was I need a second opinion and there was one and a third and forth all with the same conclusion, Brady had autism.

I knew help was needed, but for who - Brady or myself?

When I got that answer my child began to progress. For the first two years after the diagnosis my teaching him and taking him for therapy was not to help him, but change him.

My realisation was I shouldn’t change my child with autism to suit me or people, I should change my views, my vision and my mindset so I can see the world through his eyes - his difficulties, his progress and through his achievements.

When that realisation set in, then only didthedoorstohisprogressandhappiness

The Africa Edition, says Land Rover, builds on the legend that is Defender, and “gives the faithful the opportunity to own a vehicle that not only has a unique look but also an array of features that enhance its workmanlike persona.”

The limited edition rolls nearly 70 years of “hard-core, 4x4ing capability into one unmistakeable package”.

Just 50 are available, of which 30 are 110 station wagons with the balance built on the 90” platform.

All carry a Defender Africa logo on the sides and rear. It’s equipped with black Sawtooth alloys shod with 235/85/16 Goodyear Wrangler MTR dual-purpose tyres and has a distinctive red roof.

It’s only available in black with colour-coded wheel arches.

Interior highlights include a set of Melvill and Moon seat covers in black canvas with red leather piping, red contrast stitching and a unique Africa map tag.

It’s powered by a 90kW/360Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel. A range of optional extras are available.

KwaDukuza’s experienced athlete Dippy Moodley is expected to spearhead the club’s challenge in the Sparksport 32km race.

He has completed a phenomenal 20 Comrades Marathons and will be hoping to don his double green number when he tackles his 21st Comrades Marathon on 31 May. Athletes interested in participating in the Sparksport Challenge are requested to meet on Thursday 15 January at the Stanger Manor car park at 5.15pm.

Walkers and runners interested in joining the club are encouraged to participate in the club’s time trials which are held every Thursday at Manor car park.

President of KDAC Danny Sewmungal urged the KwaDukuza community to get involved in road running and walking, not only in the

hope of getting rid of the festive bulge, but to stay fit and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Sewmungal stressed the importance of dress code for all official races and walks and urged members to don their official club colour vests and black shorts, skirts, tights at all events.

KDAC will host its second council meeting of the new year on Monday 2 February at the Manor Primary School at 6.30pm.

Sewmungal appealed to club members to make every effort in ensuring their attendance at council meetings.

WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Local Football Association (KLFA) will host a two-day capacity-building workshop at the KwaDukuza Supper Room on Saturday and Sunday (17 and 18 January) at 10am.

President of KLFA Nkosinathi “Bafana” Mhlongo said: “It is compulsory for every club affiliated to KLFA to send a minimum of three delegates to the capacity-building workshop.

“The workshop will encompass a referees seminar, club constitution, rights and responsibilities of players, managers and owners, among a host of other items,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo emphasised that clubs were critical of the poor standards of refereeing in their premier league and division-one games and now they have an opportunity of sending representatives as referees so they become empowered and take the game forward.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Bafana Bafana in their quest to bring home the coveted African Cup of Nations Cup silverware. The 2015 soccer showpiece starts on 17 January.

Moodliar re-elected KZN Volleyball president >> Districts urged to develop beach volleyball

EVA Moodliar has returned unopposed as president of KwaZulu-Natal Volleyball at the biennial general meeting in Coastlands in Durban.

KwaDukuza Volleyball AssociationstalwartsKrubaJaramandAdhil Khan were re-elected as KZN Volleyball secretary and treasurer respectively.

Jaram presented a detailed activity report highlighting the achievements of KZN Volleyball in the 2014 season.

For the first time in the history of KZN Volleyball five inter-club tournaments were held in one year at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Complex and DUT Sports Centre.

The KwaDukuza Volleyball Association junior team, spearheaded by Vinnie Singh and Cyprin Tulsiram, guided the KwaDukuza outfit to honours in the junior inter-district tournament. The Amajuba ladies beat Uthungulu in the final of the women’s junior final.

The senior inter-district tournament was won by Durban and District with Tongaat emerging runners-up and KwaDukuza securing the third spot.

Samkelisiwe Sibiya of Amajuba and Zanele Ndwandwe of Hlabisa have done KZN proud after being selected to represent Volleyball South Africa at the African Youth Games in Botswana.
