The Maphumulo taxi boss known as “Ten Ten” Ngiba - the brother of the Maphumulo Taxi Association’s chairman andmanageroftheMaphumulosectionof the KwaDukuza rank - a security guard and a ‘hitman’ were left dead after the drawn out shoot-out in the “peaceful” neighbourhood.

The incident spilled into the Stanger Hospital casualty ward where two armed security guards forced their way in looking for their client, Ngiba, who had been taken to the hospital. The armed men left soon after checking on their colleague and boss who sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and head. The taxi boss was declared dead at the hospital.

Multiple sources from within the police and taxi industry confirmed that “retaliation attacks were certain” since last week’s shoot-out.

ORTH Coast residents have been left wondering if they are safe in their own homes after a taxi violence related gun fight broke out in Stanger Manor on Wednesday morning, 14 January.

Since the gruesome incident, bodies of theallegedhitmen arebeingfoundinvarious locations on the North Coast.

At least four more men, believed to have been involved in last Wednesday’s deadly ambush on a convoy of a Maphumulo Taxi Association boss, have been found dead with gunshot wounds, between KwaDukuza and Darnall.

But who is behind the killings remains a mystery.

Hawks investigate violent attack

However, the SAPS organised crime unit, the Hawks, recently tasked with investigating the violent taxi attack, believe they are “close to a breakthrough”.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, while reluctant to reveal sensitive information, said they are busy compiling a list of suspects involved in the hit.

“We are tracing all who we believe were involved in the attack and are positive we will soon have a breakthrough,” he said.

A source close to the investigation said a suspect, who was found with gunshot wounds at a local hospital on Wednesday last week and is now being detained at an undisclosed location, was providing the investigators with a list of the hitmen involved.

“We now know there were 17 hitmen and that they used three vehicles - an Audi, VW Jetta and BMW X5 - to get away from the scene.” The source said the hitman killed in the gunfight was found with R30 000 in cash in his pocket, his likely fee for taking part in the hit.

“The majority of the hitmen were from Umlazi. We had received infor-

mation that such an attack was coming, but we didn’t know where and when,” he said.

Recounting the attack a Maphumulo Taxi Association member said they were travelling on Primrose Street, as they often did on their way to the rank when the shoot-out ensued.

He said it seemed like there was a group of people in blue overalls working around the corner, however, when they got closer they brandished firearms and started shooting. The Maphumulo convoy of security guards returned fire killing one of the hitmen.

Two Maphumulo security guards, onlyknownasDubeandPetrosMkhize were also wounded.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, the taxi boss and his convoy of security guards were ambushed. He said the suspects had left the scene in their own getaway vehicles, later recovered in the Darnall area. Residents awoke to gunfire that reportedly lasted for over 10 minutes as the convoy was ambushed.

A resident, whose property the incidenthappenedinfrontof,wasterrified by the incident that “sounded worse than firecrackers”.

Choosing to remain anonymous, she told the Weekly what she heard during the ordeal.

“At around 6:20am, just as my grandson was about to leave for work, we suddenly saw smoke everywhere and the gunfire started,” she said.

“My grandson ran back into the house shouting ‘Nani [granny], get down on the floor,’ and the noise carried on for 15 to 20 minutes. We were terrified.” Police had marked over 130 spent bullet shells on scene with most on the street and some inside one of the residences on the street.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu expressed “grave concerns over the alleged taxi-related shooting incident” and admitted that the violence was most likely linked to the dispute betweentheKwaDukuzaandMaphumulo Taxi Associations.

Less than two weeks ago he addressed the two associations over curbing the violence after Muzi Mhlongo, a member of the KwaDukuza Taxi Association’s executive, was killed on New Year’s Eve. Three murder cases, one of attempted murder and one inquest docket was opened at KwaDukuza police station.

One resident who is affected by the water restrictions says that “it gets hard to do simple things like cooking and washing”.

But she is thankful that she is able to collect water as soon as the supply starts dwindling.

Main areas affected by the water cuts include areas north of Durban namely 12 wards in Ndwedwe, 12 wards in KwaDukuza, Tongaat, Ballito and Tinley Manor.

ONE­year­old boy was shot and killed and his12­year­oldbrotherwaswoundedinwhat is believed to be an attack related to the on­ going taxi violence gripping KwaDukuza and Ma­ phumulo.

AccordingtoprovincialSAPSspokespersonCol­ onelJayNaickerthefamilyofMaphumulotaxirank manager Mthobisi Mhlongo was attacked at their home, in the Mbitane area, on Friday night.

Naicker said the attackers attempted to set the home on fire before firing shots and killing the tod­ dler.

“The children’s father was not home when the attack took place. After receiving a report police proceeded to the scene, but the boy had already died,” Naicker said.

Members of the Maphumulo Taxi Association said some of them no longer sleep in their homes as they fear for their lives after a split within the association.

GROUTVILLEresidentisseeing red over what he is claiming is unfair treatment by the South African Social Security Agency regional office, after having his disability grant suspended.

The 56- six-year-old Nkosiyabantu Mkhize has been deemed “fit to work” and left to his own devices.

Mkhizewasthebeneficiaryofagovernment disability grant after he was deemed unable to work in 1992.

He says that he got ill after working as a painter for new establish ments at the time in the early 90s

in KwaDukuza.

“After working for some time, I started experiencing chest problems and I reported it to my then employers who advised me to go see a doctor, so I did,” said Mkhize. “Upon assessing me, the doctor told me that I am no longer fit to work and furnished me with some medication I would have to take including an inhaler.”

After getting a disability grant for many years since, Mkhize then received a notification to suspend his social grant in February last year on grounds that he had been found “fit for employment”, giving him 30 days to respond.

“This came as a shock to me as I am still in the same condition as I was those many years ago and I am an old man now. What do they expect me to do?” said Mkhize. After appealing the decision to cut off his disability grant, Mkhize was assessed by a doctor appointedbySASSAinKwaDukuzainOctober last year.

“The doctor just looked at me, my medical records and the medication I was taking and we were done. He did not even touch me or tell me anything,” said Mkhize.

“I went back to SASSA to re-apply for the grant and I was served with a letter from the executive region-

al manager telling me that my application was unsuccessful.”

According to the letter Mkhize presented to the Weekly, his application was unsuccessful on the grounds that “thereislittle,ifany,significantresidual impairment affecting your ability to work”.

The Weekly contacted the SASSA regional office in Petermaritzburg to find out about the normal procedure regarding Mkhize’s case.

According to spokesperson Musa Mdlalose, Mkhize still has the option to appeal the decision by SASSA. “The client can lodge a complaint disputing the decision if he feels that SASSA has been inaccurate in their assessment,” he said.

He further explained that “SASSA is not a ‘sickness grant’.

“This means that if the sickness experienced by the client is manageable to the point that the client’s ability to seek and do work is not hindered, then he no longer needs the grant.

“When a client receives a disability grant,heorshereceivesitwiththecondition of a later review. A review, in this case, has shown that the client is fit to work, but he can appeal this decision if he likes,” said Mdlalose.

WithregardstoMkhize’sage,Mdlalose responded saying that “SASSA is not a ‘basic income grant’ so we do not consider the client’s age as a factor in our reviews, and that is the parliamentary accepted policy”.

AM a happy person by nature. My resolve is: there is no point in being unhappy.

It weighs me down, makes me vulnerable to all kinds of things that I don't want to be vulnerable to and is crappy for the universe, with all the alreadybadkarmabeingputout there by...oh yeah, everybody.

So instead of sulking and gaping, which I'm not saying I don't do – I'd be inhuman if I didn't ever do those things – I quickly deal with it, put it behind me and move on. I'm of the belief that every problem can be solved with a bit of thought and diligence and if after thought and diligence there is no solution...then maybe your problem is wrong or doesn’t exist.

We so readily complain about everything and the kitchen sink that we forget the actual problems there are in the world. I mean can we really compare the flat tyre on the way to work that made you all of 20 minutes late to the starvation of a child in a war-torn country?

Now don't get me wrong, I am in no way trying to belittle your flat tyres and the heaps of yelling you had to take from your boss, but really, can it compare to the true pain and suffering of that child or of that country?

Can it compare to a man once living an average life beingthrowntothestreetslosing his family and being reduced to a beggar because job loss in our country is a very real truth?

It's really disappointing that we have so much yet appreciate it so little.

Obviously if you are reading this you have access to a newspaper in a functional area and are not totally bad off. We live lives that could be spectacular simply because we live freely in a place where the worst natural disaster is heavy rain.

Butno,wewouldmuchrather harp on the smartphone we want, but can't get...immediately, the roadblock from which YOU got a ticket because YOU weren't wearing a seat belt or the astronomical fight YOU had with so and so over such and such and now nothing will ever be the same.

I'm sure you will get that smartphone eventually and the ticket will be ignored until a summons comes around andyoubegrudginglypayitoff and “so and so” will forgive

you and all will be well or “so and so” will go away and you may be all the better for it.

But, look at that, it's all YOU, YOU, YOU isn't it?

We are selfish creatures, human beings, I admit, I most definitely am, but I appreciate what I have and I admit what I am.

We live in a time of denial and self loathing...it's not healthy at all.

I think we should be happy for all we have and appreciate it. That crappy job, is a job at least...that Nokia cellphone is better than nothing at all, that ticket for not wearing a seat belt could be the wake up call you need to avoid future tickets and potentially save your life.

We have so much - it's our duty to make the best of it.

Smile a little, take a moment to consider what if you didn't have what you have today.

Don't complain because times are tough and cash is tight, aspire to better times through positivity and hard work. Man makes money, but money will never make a man.

Be happy and positive and the universe will pay it back to you.

Live happily, love completely and laugh heartily...it's the only thing people will remember when all you are is a memory.

“This definitely isn’t the case when registering at Boston. Our students get their GED credential by studying at one of our 44 campuses or online, and this can be done by studying for just a few hours a week for eleven months,” said Katz.

HE next time you buy a car, you might want to pause a while longer to decide what colour you choose.

Top car companies throw millions at researching what the latest tastes are, and say the colour of a vehicle is so important to customers that it can be the difference between buying or not.

TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassic colours—redsforPorschesandother sports cars — and a few less conventional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truck decked out in “forged copper”).

But there was no mistaking the pre-eminence of white. Particularly

at the Volkswagen stand, where several cars, the stairs and much of the furniture was white.

In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothing is done by mistake, of course.

AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitreferred to the “Apple effect” — the Californian tech giant — to explain the propensity for white vehicles.

Sitting at a white table, on white chairs, in a white room, Oona Scheepers of Volkswagen told AFP: “White for cars really peaked in the 1970s and 1980s, and then all of a sudden disappeared.

“But in the past 10 years we have noticed an increase again in white.

And it definitely came with the Apple iPod era because Apple started to do everything with white, and a lot of

chrome or metal finishes.

“In combination it was nice and fresh. But before that, white was really not selling in Europe because people associated it with delivery cars and it looked cheap.

“But the combination with metal and chrome looks fresh and completely new. White is booming worldwide.”

So if one were to choose a black vehicle over a white one, what kind of person would that make you?

“You could be sporty. But people in hot countries like white.

“White definitely deflects heat, but if you have a black car it can get damn hot inside. And then in a country like South Africa you often have to overtake into direct, oncoming traffic, but white is very visible.

FOLLOWING a busy period of new­model launches in South Africa last year, 2015 shows no sign of slowing downwithmanyall­newvehiclesandupgradeshead­ ed our way. Here are some of the highlights: Sports cars Well­heeled high­performance enthusiasts have several pulse­quickening cars to look forward to, in­ cluding the new two­seater Mercedes­AMG GT which arrives in May to replace the SLS. In March the much­ awaited C63 AMG will make its local debut, and com­ peting with it for the attention of hot­blooded petrol heads will be the high­performance Lexus RCF, flag­ ship of the new RC coupé range arriving later this year.

Another notable sports car headed here around November is Ford’s Mustang. Also on the possible ra­ dar for 2015 is Porsche’s venomous 911 GT3 RS. Honda’s Civic Type­R will give boy­racers some­ thing to get excited about when it lands in the third quarter of this year sporting a powerful new turbo en­ gine, while Mini’s rapid John Cooper Works, Audi’s hot RS3 and third­generation TT are also on the 2015 launch list. Mazda’s MX5 and the Spider version of Al­ fa’s stunning 4C give convertible fans something to look forward to.

City cars At the more modestly powered and priced end of the market, several new affordable small­car ranges areheadedourway,startingwiththeA­segmentSuz­ uki Celerio hatch later this month to replace the Alto.

It will be followed in February by VW’s new Up! three­ door hatch, a small car with big ambitions.

Other upcoming city cars are the new Toyota Aygo arrivingaroundmid­year,andasafety­upgradedDat­ sun Go (with ABS and airbags). Daimler’s Smart For­ two city car gets here in December followed by the

Compact cars Moving up to slightly bigger hatch­ backs, Opel’s Adam has just landed in SA to compete with the likes of the Fiat 500 and Honda’s new Jazz arrives later this month.

BMW’s first front­wheel­drive car, the 2 Series Ac­ tive Tourer, goes on sale later this month. March sees the launch of Citroën’s outlandishly­styled C4 Cactus along with the new Peugeot 308 hatch.

Sedans Ford’s Fusion, the replacement for the mid­sized Mondeo arrives in local showrooms in the next couple of months, to be followed by the new Volkswagen Passat around mid­year.

Towards the end of the year Jaguar’s XE sedan heads here to take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series.

Luxury cars TheswoopycoupéversionoftheMercedesS­Class will be in local showrooms by the end of this month, featuring a Curve Tilt function that leans the car’s body into a bend — much like a biker or skier would — to reduce lateral forces on the driver and passen­ gers.

SUVs Buyersseekingbigcabinspaceandagenerousride height will have lots to choose from this year. BMW’s second­generation X6, the Land Rover Discovery Sport (which replaces the Freelander), the new Kia Sorento, the retro­styled Jeep Renegade, the Subaru Outback, the X3­rivalling new Lexus NX, and the new Infiniti QX80 will all cruise in during the first half of the year. The second half will usher in Audi’s new Q7, Merc’sGLECoupé,Volvo’sXC90andFoton’sTopland­ er. New compact crossovers will be the Opel Mokka, Fiat 500X, Mazda CX­3 and Hyundai ix25.

Commercials WithToyota’snewHiluxonlyarrivingin2016,there isn’t much news on the bakkie front in 2015, except for some upgrades to Isuzu’s KB range. GWM’s Steed 6 range has just been unveiled alongside the older Steed 5 which continues as a more value­based work­ horse, while plugging the gap is the more leisure­ori­ ented Steed 5E.

Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, said the colour was so crucial to some people that they would buy a car purely because of that — never mind the design of the vehicle.

She too identified an Apple ripple effect in propelling white to a bestseller worldwide for Ford.

“White is very clean, very technical, very modern. So most cars look good in white,” she said, adding other popular colours included blacks and silvers, while blue is also on the up.

Lampinen identified only “slight differences” in preferences in different countries because, she said, of globalisation. Environment, culture and climate can all effect what colour car someone might buy, she added.

The British firm announced 1 300 new jobs to help it create the five-door, five-seater sports utility vehicle, which will cost around R660 000 in South Africa.

TETE Tigers will be aiming for their 6th straight league victory in the SAFA Ilembe SAB Regional League (KwaDukuza-Stream B) when the league action resumes after the Christmas recess on Sunday 25 January.

The newly-promoted KwaDukuza Local Football Premier League champions, Tigers stunned their more fancied rivals since making their debut in the SAFA Ilembe SAB Regional League at the start of the 2014/2015 season, boastinganunblemishedrecordoffive

They have amassed a maximum of 15 points and are eight points clear of nearest rivals, Thembeni Warriors and Inguga (seven points each) who share joint second spot with the more experienced Zamani Madrid outfit in fourt spot with six points.

Dawnheights kick off new year on winning note WEEKLY REPORTER DAWNHEIGHTS Cricket Club started the new year on a winning note after trouncing Magnum by 109-runs in a domestic Twenty-20 League game played at a humid Gledhow Ground on Saturday afternoon.

Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat first. With temperatures swelling well over the 40 degrees mark, the Magnum fielders were left red in the face after chasing the red leather ball all over the park.

Openers Sagar Arora and Taqueer Malik were in scintillating form with the bat scoring 70 without loss at the halfway stage of the game. Hemraj

made the breakthrough in the 11th over after clean bowling Arora for 35 runs (which included three fours and a six).

Surauv Tambuti Singh joined Malik at the crease and they added another 20 runs to the tally (93/2) before Malik (37) became Hemraj’s second victim.

Minerals Football Club boast an unbeaten record (four wins and a draw) in the Mandeni Stream A, but the likes ofMambane(threewins,onedrawand a loss) and Isithebe United (three wins and a draw) should not be discounted.

In the Mandeni Stream B SAB Regional League, Nembe Citizen are on top of the log table with 12 points, followed closely by Tsunami with 11 points and Reserve Stars with 10 points.

All eyes will be on Real Celtic and Nkobongo who lock horns in the KwaDukuza Stream A.

On Sunday, Dawnheights continued their rich vein of form after trouncing East Coast by 65-runs in a KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground.

Dawnheights batted first and posted 199/10 in their allotted 50 overs.

WEEKLY REPORTER MAN-of-the-match Alveiro NadaseninspiredManorCricketClubto an impressive 86-runs victory against Oceanville in an Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 League game played at the Country Club on Saturday.

There was a lethargic approach to the game with some players strolling into the park well after the 2.30pm kick-off and the stumps being put on after the starting time resulting in the match being reduced to 19-overs.

Manor won the toss and elected to bat first.

LEMBE trounced Chatsworth by 8-wicketsinaKwaZulu-NatalChallenge League game played at the Penguin Street Grounds in Chatsworth on Sunday.

The decision by Ilembe to field first after winning the toss was vindicated after the Chatsworth top-order batsmen were dismissed for a duck. The hostspickedupsixrunsinthefirstover (through leg byes) before Aaron Pillay struck for the visitors in the 2nd over after Nanakumar Pillay was adjudged LBW for a duck.

In the third over Tyron Namchunder was trapped LBW to a Dillon Rautenbachdeliverywithoutgettingoffthe mark. Chatsworth’s woes continued after Dereshen Gounden was clean bowled in Rautenbach’s next delivery.

Daryll Govender (0) was caught at point by Zufilkar Ali off the bowling of Pillay leaving the home team in deep trouble at 9/4 in the 6th over. Pillay claimed his third victim after clean bowling Rusheel Singh for a duck.

Kevin Naidoo was dismissed by Rautenbach for a duck. Leon Chetty made a solitary run before being castled by Rautenbach in the 11th over.

Kirshen Pillay strolled steadily to thecrease,hopingtoovercomethedisappointing performance of his teammates, but he made a quick roundabout turn after being clean bowled by Rautenbach for a royal duck.

At 27/8, the hosts were facing their most humiliating defeat at home. But, despite wickets falling around him like ten-pins, Stanton Govender joined forces with Orien Pillay to add some respectability to the score-line.

Chatsworth were bundled out for 68 runs in the 20th over. Rautenbach was the destroyer-in-chief for Ilembe claiming 5/15 from 7 overs. He received good support from Pillay, who grabbed 3/22 from 7 overs.

Chasing69runsforvictoryfrom50overs (at a rate of 1, 38 runs per over) Alveiro Nadasen and Steven Jacobs upped the tempo right from the start.

They batted at 5 runs per over, racing to 57/1 in the 13th over before Jacobs (32) was caught at mid-on by Singh off the bowling of Kishen Ramdee.

Zufilkar Ali scored five runs from three deliveries before being stumped by wicket-keeper Kevin Naidoo off the bowling of Stanton Govender.

Nadasen (27 not out) smashed the last delivery of the 14th over to the boundary to guide Ilembe to an emphatic8-wicketsvictoryandsecurethe bonus point for the log leaders.
