HE Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will conduct an oversight visit at the Stanger Hospital after the recent reports of patient deaths due to alleged negligence. The oversight visit will be conducted by IFP spokesperson for health Ncamisile Nkwanyana on Thursday, 19 February. The visit has been prompted by a recent increase of reports of patients dying allegedly at the hands of negligent practitioners at the hospital. On Monday, 2 February Thembekile Mkhize (30) died shortly after giving birth. “This hospital is being called a ‘butchery’, where patients are dying due to negligence and the IFP want to see action being taken against anyone found to be guilty,” said Nkwanyana. The Weekly reported last week that Mkhizehadfallenseverelyillasaresult of having her bowel accidentally punctured during a caesarian-section procedure. Fixing the water supply in Blythedale Beach
>> After months of complaining and demanding answers, iLembe clarifies “dirty” water in Darnall and Zamani JYOTHI LALDAS
D
ARNALL and Zamani residents have been up in arms due to the “severely poor” quality of water they have been forced to use over the past couple of months. They claim, despite a number of complaints to the iLembe District Municipality, nothing has been done to correct the discoloration or to allay their concerns. Speaking to the Weekly, one resident who chose to remain anonymous, saidthewatersupply is “dirty” and “half of the time we have no water at all”. “We are expected to drink this water, cook with this water, bath with this water. We will sooner end up sick and dirty if we use this water. Some of us buy Ndumiso Shabangu is a student at the University of water to use in our home KwaZulu-Natal Howard College doing a BA Music degree despite paying for the at 3rd year level as a singer. According to the District Municipality’swatermanagerforKwaDukuza and Ndwedwe Elias Bhengu the water is safe for consumption. “All other aspects of quality are met. Compliancy tests are done bimonthly and submissions are made to the Department of Water and Sanitation for monitoring,” he said. Manager of Water Quality for iLembe Raynund Ganesh said the latest sample which was taken on 21 January 2015 indicated no chronic health effect for both manganese and iron. However, from an aesthetic (visual) perspective the results exceed the standard recommended limits for drinking water. “Since the last four months (from October 2014), with low water levels in most areas, the water quality has deteriorated with only 42% compliance in turbidity which is caused by aesthetic levels in iron exceeding the recommended limits (only complying 58%),” he said. iLembe has engaged the Darnall Mill, which supplies water to Zamani and Darnall on its behalf regarding the treatment of water. As possible solutions, the Darnall Mill has raised the extraction point by 300mm and this change is being monitored. They are also pre-treating water by pre-chlorination and lime-dosing.
Workers on site in Blythedale Beach.
JYOTHI LALDAS AFTER fielding numerous complaints about the water supply in Blythedale, the iLembe District Municipality is in the process of fixing ageing infrastructure to ensure better supply. Water supply in the Blythedale Beach area has been intermittent of late due to the aging infrastructure and subsequent breaks in the supply mains. According to the KwaDukuza and Ndwedwe Water Manager for iLembe Elias Bhengu, Blythedale is a very sandy area and it is difficult to locate leaks. “At times we augment the supply via the KwaDukuza CBD supply. We only do that when there is low pressure as a result of water leaks,” he said. iLembe is currently busy with pipe replacement projects in Blythedale as well as in Stanger Manor and Zinkwazi. He said the purpose of the project

is to replace and upgrade ageing water reticulation infrastructure which is in poor condition and to provide a safe and reliable water network to KwaDukuza. Existing pipes will be replaced with PVC pipes (50mm – 350mm) with installation of new pipe fitting and specials including PRV’s, isolating valves, air valves, scour valves, chambers, valve markers and fire hydrants. Meter audits will be undertaken as well as relocation of water meters to property boundaries. The Blythedale contract was awarded to Mvumisi Projects on 4 June 2014 with construction beginning on 1 September 2014. Constructionisexpectedtoendon5May this year. “There will be planned shutdowns during the project and as the district we will try to keep the water interruptions to at least a few hours andnotdays.Weaskforyourunderstanding and co-operation in this regard,” said Bhengu.

ANC, your time is up I WAS mortified and greatly disillu sioned having watched the fiasco that erupted during the State of the Nation (SONA) on 12 February. The disruption and disturbance from the EFF comes as no surprise to the entire nation, but what was really disconcerting and totally disgraceful was the tactless and boorish manner in which the ruling party (ANC) han dled the entire matter. From the jamming of the transmis sion signals, to the SAPS being called into parliament chambers – this party blundered their way through the SONA beingcompletelyundiplomaticandin judiciousandcommittingagrossviola tion of the constitution. The very same constitution that many fought for, even to the point of death, to ensure that it becomes the foundation of our democracy. A democracy that seems to be brushed off and trampled upon by the ANC. SONA took us back to the days of the oppressive apartheid regime when the government of the day oppressed and controlled everything and tightly held the reins over what was broad casted and what the people had ac cess to. The brute force that was used in the removal of the EFF MPs was redo lent of the apartheid security forces vi olently removing protestors in an ef fort to silence their cries for liberation. The evasiveness of the speaker of the house in answering simple ques tionsviz,“WastheSAPScalledintothe chambers?” was indicative of her bias

and incompetence in functioning as a neutral speaker of the house. She, however, chose to act as the president’s personal bodyguard and spokesperson. It’s time to sanction a new competent speaker of the house. FortoolongtheANChasbeengiven carte blanche in ruling this country, but no more. It is time for truth and accountabili ty. The ruling party has been enforcing laws on others yet think of themselves as above the law. The reaction of President Jacob Zu ma to the debacle that unravelled in parliament was completely improper and unbecoming for a leader of a na tion. Tomerelylaughoffamatterwithout so much as some words of explanation to placate the situation or even an apology to the nation and the entire world that was watching was unac ceptable and very suggestive of the in ept and unproficient leader that he is. It most certainly doesn’t augur well for him as the leader of this nation. I don’t foresee a favourable and prosperousfutureforourcountryifthis is the calibre of leadership that the ANC is producing to rule in our land. This ANCruled government needs to be more accountable and transpar ent to the citizens whom they serve andtostophidingbehindtheirbullying tactics. But then again honesty, account ability and truth are not qualities that they can identify with. SONA has made it lucid and crystal clear that the ANC doesn’t have what it takes to rule South Africa with wis dom, integrity, accountabilityandhon esty. So, ANC your time is up! Annet Govender

How can we teach morals without religion?
Sibusiso Biyela
@astrosibs
I
HAVE often wondered how atheists and secular people go through life without God. I have asked myself what hope you have for the future without a supernatural being in your corner looking out for you, and I have wondered even more what morals mean to someone who is Godless (Godfree?). The first decade of my life was quite tur bulent as my family consisting of at least four children at a time and my mother never really stayed in one place for more than a year or two. In this way, I do not remember that we settled and subscribed to any church as a result. I really got exposed to the life of church
much later in the decade and only then was I smart enough to ask myself some ques tions. If memory serves, I think I was nine and suffering the pain of my first (of many) wis dom tooth. I asked myself, who is God? From what I had seen at the time I con cluded that God was there to keep human beings in order and to try to keep them from killing each other. Satisfied with my answer, I reasoned that since I was a good person at the time that I did not need God and that I did not need religion. As time went by and as I listened to priests from all denominations of church, I started to realise that all the stuff they were saying from that ‘black book’ made a lot of sense. In fact, I thought that all the good things the book said such as "do not steal", "do not killanotherhumanbeing",etc, weresoobvi ous that I thought it a bit redundant to at tend church. But, I continued to attend since, by virtue of my mother, I did not have much choice in the matter. As time passed and I slept under the benches at "crossnight" (overnight church services) and I noticed that every time the preacher said these things, he promised the grown ups and the other kids that we would go to heaven if we did these good things as God demanded. Thisconfusedmequiteabit(existential ism can get very interesting for an adoles
cent). I mean, is it not obvious that we should do unto others as we would like to be done unto us? Whythepromiseofblisstoaddtoit? And whyperpetuatethepromiseofbeingbrand ed a child of Satan if I am naughty? I have always kept a cynical view of reli gion for these reasons. Anyway, when I first learned of atheism, I had this idea that atheists were devilwor shipping freaks, despite my own skepticism about God and religion. How can you seriously be a good person without having God guide you? Through pop culture that I had wit nessed from my morethanfair share of television, I saw good deeds from people who did not acknowledge God in any of their works and trying this out myself I realised how much more pure it was to do good with out the promise of heaven or prosperity. Now, do not get me wrong, I am not goodietwoshoes (this phrase always con fused me), I have just been lucky enough to not get in a lot of trouble (relatively speak ing), but I think I have a good grasp of what makes a good person good. So, how do you live without God? How doyoudissuadeyourchildrenfromevilwith out sending them to Sunday school? I think that you can be a good person by loving those close to you (and everyone else) and remembering to do to others what you wish to be done to you. I don't think you need the Bible for that.
Commendable, the Stanger Hospital? A MOST definite YES, based on my first hand experience on the afternoon of 10 Jan uary. I am a man in my early 40s and for the first time in my life I experienced unbearable chest pains that had me doubled over all of this within a space of an hour in the com fort of my lounge. I asked my son to urgently drive me to Stanger Hospital casualty, whilst ringing at the back of my head were the following words, “Are you really going to Stanger Hos pital? You do know that you are not going back home once this is over right.” But the severe pain quickly wiped away these thoughts as I entered the Stanger Hospital. At the entrance of the casualty ward I was met by a porter who immediately un derstood my circumstance and quickly as sisted me out of the car, into a wheelchair and took me speedily into casualty ward whilst I was bent over clutching at my chest. This was when I met the people who brought me back from the dead, Dr Jay Mat thew and his team. This team of six or seven people gathered around me and had me hooked up to differ ent types of drips whilst Dr Matthew stayed at my side talking me through what was happening to me and what he and his team
were going to be doing. He also brought in humour trying to keep me as calm as he possibly could. Although he was about to end his shift, he promised that I need not worry and that he will be at my side all the way and beyond his normal shift. It was 15 minutes later whilst they were busy working on me that I went into cardiac arrest (flat lined). This team with Dr Matthew’s guidance brought me back and five minutes later I flat lined, again. Eventually when I did come around Dr Matthew was still at my side explaining whathadhappenedandupdatingmeonmy current status whilst verifying my respons es. He stabilised me and continued tele phonic discussions with the senior cardio specialist at Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital who advised on the medications that I fur ther required and requested that I be for warded to Luthuli at the soonest. That same evening arrangements were made to have me transported to Luthuli hospital and Kenny and his team (our local paramedics) ensured that I was taken speedily and safely to Luthuli hospital and during the course of the journey ensured
that I was comfortable and as stable as could be. I was completely stabilised at Luthuli hospital and am now a well recovering heart bypass patient. In a nutshell and based on my personal experience, using the governmental system was a first for me and will forever be a part ofmymemoryofexcellentservicewithdedi cated, committed people who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that I had a second chance at life. I am truly indebted, grateful and greatly appreciative of this new lease on life that I have been granted and more so to these great people who assisted me all the way through. My heart felt commendation (no pun intended) to Dr Matthew and his team for bringingmebackfromthedeadandkeeping me alive. I now have a completely new per spective on life. I had the wonderful oppor tunity after my ordeal to personally thank all the individuals concerned and this was truly a humbling experience for me. Thank you and may your team grow from strength to strength in dedicating themselves selflessly to the health needs of our community. Great job Stanger Hospital! Anon

ADVERTORIAL learning, we register many learners for further or higher education and we set them on a pathway to arm themselves with skills and make them work ready,” said Natalie. “Boston recognises that too many are not reaching their full potential at school and are not prepared to enter the job market. “It’s for this reason that Boston has created a series of exciting access programmes, including a range of Higher Education Gateway Programmes. “These offer various access options into tertiary education without the need to repeat grade 12. “We started these programmes with a purpose of providing students a path that both leads to credits awarded towards our registered higher education programmes, as well as entrance to the career of their dreams.” Boston’s tertiary gateway programmes offer a range of alternatives, including marketing management, business management, financial accounting and event management to name a few. These are bridging courses that can provide you access to higher education programmes at Boston. On successful completion thereof, you will have met the entry requirements to a range of higher education diplomas and secured future vertical access to a degree programme, achieved without having to redo grade 12.

In Loving Memory of the late
RAKESH (DEO) DHANI You and your family are kindly requested to attend the Yearly Ceremony Date: Sunday, 22 February 2015 Time: 09:00 am Venue: Glendale Your presence will be highly appreciated It seems like yesterday many memories in our minds some we laugh, some we cry. The times we shared and the laughter we had are things we miss, when we think of you. You had a special way that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew you. Sadly missed by your Dad, Mum, Brother, Sister, and a host of family and friends.
In Loving Memory
Mr Denzil Pillay
Of 164 Platinum Street Padinagar Township, Tugela Born: 03/07/1980 Called to Rest: 07/02/2015
You told me you were coming home to me, and while waiting I fell into slumber. Dreaming you were standing at the front door, I awoke to news of horror, that you were gone. I couldn’t believe the love of my life would just leave me like that. It was impossible, I had to see for myself. There you lay, with a smile on your face, in deep sleep. It felt like this was one of your many pranks. But no my love, you truly had left me. Alone to face this world. How could you go so soon. We had so much to do together. So many unfulfilled dreams and promises. All I can ask is Why? Family and friends gathered in their numbers to say goodbye. I still feel like this is all a bad dream, and that you will come back home to me. Your body may be gone as Ash to Ash, Dust to Dust, But your love lives here within my heart and will, forever. My days grow shorter, and my nights seem darker now. I breathe because of your love and will continue to do so, until we meet again. The 15th Day Memorial Ceremony of the late Denzil Pillay will be held on the 21st February 2015 at the Siva Sungum Hall. Supper from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and thereafter service will be conducted. Sadly missed by your wife (Reena), mother, sisters, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

WEEKLY REPORTER

INESH Geanballey and Darrel Shanmagum clinched the KwaDukuza Darts Association pre-season darts doubles title after walloping Charlie Pillay and Terrence Subban at the North Coast Tavern in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. Geanballey and Shanmagum proved to be a formidable combination, outclassing Yogan Pillay and Jodie Naidoo in straight sets (2-0) in the quarter-finals to set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Jerry Govender and Wesley Pillay. Govender and Pillay were quick off the starting blocks in the first set of the semi-final, but their failure to keep the momentum going fizzled out resulting in their demise. With the first set under their belts Geanballey and Shanmagum upped their tempo in the second set, notching up huge scores to register a fluent 2-0 win to book their place in the final. In the bottom half of the draws, veteran darts campaigner Paddy Padayachee and Jerry Arunachellam stunned the more fancied duo of Justin Naidoo and Vigem Murugan in the quarters,winning2-0tosecureasemifinal berth against Charlie Pillay and Terrence Subban. Pillay, who has been in prolific form throughout the 2014 darts season continued his rich vein of form on Wednesday night, almost single-handedly trouncing their rivals (2-0) to advance to the final. The final proved to be a dull, drab affair with Geanballey and Shanmagum all over their rivals (Pillay and Subban) like a bad rash. They hardly moved out of the first gear after cantering to a fluent straight set win (2-0) to secure their first silverware of the 2015 season.

the Proteas fall short? Will they be exposed yet again in the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the ICC World Cup or will they finally overcome the hoodoo in the knockout stages of the tournament and go all the way to clinch the coveted title that have eluded them? When the quartet of young stroke maker Quinton de Kock, Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis battle to keep the score-board ticking, who can South Africa depend upon to take them out of their misery? They lack a genuine world-class all rounder (gone are the days of Lance Klusener, Shaun Pollock and Jacques Kallis). Yet, tournament favourites Australia boast a depth in batting which include all-rounder James Faulkner and Glen Maxwell together with the bowling pedigree of Mitch Marsh. Tigers snatch scrappy 2-1 win >> Coach says team’s performance could have been better WEEKLY REPORTER
T
IGERS Football Club snatched a scrappy 2-1 win against Sun City in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League game played at the Recreation Ground on Sunday. The Melville-based Tigers outfit should have opened their account as early as the fifth minute after Vusimuzi Magubane broke free on the left flank, but instead of crossing the ball to his teammates in the box, he selfishly shot at goal, hitting the side-netting. Ten minutes later Danonne Dube put Tigers ahead (1-0) after beating the City keeper with a long range shot. Instead of using his hands to catch a tame long range shot, the City keeper used his feet and watched agonisingly after the ball slipped under his feet and into the goal-mouth. City pressed forward in search of an equaliser, but their finishing was woeful. In the 26th minute City’s Mxo Gwala broke free from his marker, but shot wide from just outside the box. In the dying minutes of the first half, City’s central defender, the lanky Thabani Mthiyane was fortunate to get away with a yellow card (instead of a red one) after a robust challenge on Makhathini. Tigers came close to doubling their advantage barely minutes into the 2nd half after Palouse Nale shot way over the crossbar with only the City keeper to beat. Minutes later he had an opportunity to redeem himself, but this time the City keeper made a brilliant save, diving to his left to deny Nale. Midway into the second half the City keeper made yet another acrobatic save to deny Magubane. With
less than 20 minutes remaining and holding onto a slender 1-0 lead, Tigers brought on 13-year-old Siduduzo Langeni for striker Mpumeleli Mkhwanazi. In the 70th minute Thando Dube was brought down just the box and Tigers were awarded a free kick. Nthokozo Makhathini’s brilliantly
executed free kick beat the City keeper and floated into the far right hand corner of the goal-mouth to give Tigers a 2-0 lead. Five minutes later Langeni shouldhavesealedthefateoftheirrivals after receiving a precisiontimed cross from Magubane on the right flank. In the dying minutes of

the game City were awarded a dubious penalty after Makhathini was deemed to have brought down the City striker in the box. Makhathini received a yellow card, but after protesting with the referee (showing dissent), he (the referee) showed the second yellow card and flashed a red card, giving marching orders to Makhathini. Gwala converted the resultant spotkick to score a late consolation goal. Bobby Dladla, coach of the Tigers outfit was far from pleased with the performance of his charges despite winning 2-1. He said: “We threw away too many chances and our finishing was poor”. In an earlier KLFA Premier League game played at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, Happy Stars and Citizen All Stars shared the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate.
