Mega mall gets green light

A

FTER months of sitting on the fence the R1.4 billion Ballito Junction regional shopping centre development has been given the go-ahead by the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM).

The municipality, on Wednesday, approved the Site Development Plan (SDP) for the 65,000m2 mega mall project being led by the Menlyn Maine and Flanagan and Gerard consortium.

According to plans the existing Ballito Junction will be extended by more than six times its current size into a world-class regional

shopping destination at the entrance to Ballito.

Construction on Ballito Junction, which is located at the entrance of Ballito, between the busy N2 and M4 highways, is anticipated to take about 24 months.

The new mall is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2017.

The new Ballito Junction will be home to the town’s first cinemacomplex,inadditiontoboasting great family entertainment, a hugely expanded fashion offering for the region and an exciting mix of food outlets.

Speaking to the Weekly, mayor Ricardo Mthembu said the mall will be a “draw card” for the

More shopping options for North Coast residents “The KwaDukuza Municipality recog­ nises our commitment and the value this major investment is going to have on the region.

It is going to take the shopping, en­ tertainment and leisure offering on the North Coast region to a whole new lev­ el, with the new mega mall set to be­ come the hotspot in Ballito both for lo­ cals and tourists.”

“Getting the green light means we can commence with the re­develop­ ment of Ballito Junction into the domi­ nant regional shopping centre on the KZN North Coast.

“This exciting development will see the existing 10,000m2 centre being overhauled and extended to 65,000m2,” said Patrick Flanagan, ex­ ecutive director of Flanagan and Ger­ ard Property Development and Invest­ ment.

“The new, significantly larger and more striking Ballito Junction regional shopping centre is being developed to meet the retail and leisure needs of a growing and affluent market on the North Coast.

“It will boast a considerable enter­ tainment and leisure component, an­ chored by a Nu Metro cinema complex and trendy restaurants.

“This, together with a world­class retail mix of top SA and international fashion outlets and major department stores, will set the new Ballito Junction apart in the region,” he adds.

Jankowitz also said that at R1.4 bil­ lion, this is a massive investment not

just in Ballito, but KZN as a whole.

“While our initial investment will take the mall to 65,000m2, develop­ ment rights that exist on the site allow for the centre to be further expanded to90,000m2–that’s“super­regional” shopping centre status.”

According to developers the existing centre will continue to trade, largely unaffected by construction ac­ tivities.

However, the centre will undergo a degree of modernisation, so as to tie in to the expansion.

Current anchor tenant Pick n Pay will be expanded, and other existing tenants like Dis­Chem, will be joined by an array of department stores.

Illustrating demand and how up­ beat national and international retail­ ers are about the development, Flana­ gan says more than 80% of the space is already let.

“It’smorethantwoyearsbeforethe new Ballito Junction regional mall is scheduled to open, and we have al­ ready secured several major retail brands.

Woolworths,Game,Edgars,Foschi­ ni, Truworths, Jet, Queenspark, Mar­ kham, Identity, Total Sports, Clicks, In­ credible Connection, Cape Union Mart and Coricraft are among the retailers already signed up to join Pick n Pay and Dis­Chem at Ballito Junction,” he said.

On the entertainment and food side, Nu Metro Cinemas, Spur and Turn ‘n Tender, and a host of popular fast­ food outlets and restaurants in the food court have already been secured.

RAZEN armed robbers targeted the Mandeni Mall on Monday evening killing a security guard and wounding two others during the attack.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics Paul Herbst, who responded to the cash heist, it is believed that four heavily armed attackers opened fire on security guards whiletheywereexitingashopjustafter the collection of money.

“Two guards where shot and are in a critical condition while a third guard who was caught in the crossfire died. The wounded guards where transported to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support paramedics.

“Oneoftheguardswaslaterairlifted from hospital to another facility for further care.”

The suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No arrests were made. The Mandeni SAPS are investigating.

BRAND new computer centre will make learning much easier and more exciting at Stanger Heights Primary School thanks to Vodacom Millionaires.

Vodacom Millionaires donated a fully setup computer centre to the school on Thursday.

The school received 20 pupil laptops, one teacher laptop, an interactive white board, a projector, a server, a printer and computer training for teachers.

The Vodacom Millionaires programme is part of Vodacom’s com-

mitment to bridging the digital divide that affects schools in previously disadvantaged communities.

JYOTHI LALDAS THE iLembe District Municipality in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre held a two-day disaster management and climate change workshop at the Maphumulo Town Hall in iLembe last week.

The workshop was to follow up on progress and implementation of the resolutions that were taken during the disaster management workshop which was held on 25 and 26 November 2013 at Darnall Country Club.

According to the iLembe Disaster Management Risk Unit manager Sifiso Ngubane, the workshop also intended to enlighten stakeholders to advocate for an integrated and co-ordinated approach in an effort to deal with issues of climate change and disaster risk reduction as per policy di-

WADUKUZA’S Eldry Leibrandt and Louis Pillay have auditioned for South African television cooking reality show the Ultimate Braai Master season four.

Going by the name team Shisa Mfethus, Leibrandt and Pillay were selected as one of 15 teams to have their auditions filmed at their home in Rocky Park.

SpeakingtotheWeeklyLeibrandt said: “We had a few hours to prepare five dishes before the judging panel arrived at our home.

“We cooked a tripe with sherry potjie served with savoury pap, Tar-

zan leg of lamb grilled over an open flame using a wheelbarrow, homemade buns and chillie beef burgers served with mushroom sauce made over the fire, a breakfast special combination of onion rings and cheese wrapped in bacon and grilled over the smokey coals. For dessert we made local fruit skewers of mangoes and pineapples drizzled with a curry powder and mint sauce.”

Present at the audition was the Ultimate Braai Master filming crew, celebrity chefs and owner of Harvey’s Restaurant. The rest of the afternoon was spent tasting the meals and playing soccer with the judges and filming crew.

HEN it comes to choosing an academic pro­ gramme to study that leads to good employ­ ment, be sure to look at occupational pro­ grammes.ThisistheadvicefromRuanVenter,registrar of Boston City Campus & Business College.

According to Venter, students often overlook oc­ cupational programmes because they are not aware of what makes these programmes unique.

“As the name indicates, occupational pro­ grammes prepare students for a specific occupa­ tion,” he elaborates. “They are thus very focused and structured to get a student as work­ready as possi­ ble.” Besides their specific focus, occupational pro­ grammeshavecertaindistinctiveadvantages,which Venter unpacks as follows: 1. Register anytime – due to the training method­ ology, students can register for occupational pro­ grammes at almost any time.

Thereareexceptionshereandthere,butmostoc­ cupational programmes are open for registration throughout the year. Students can start their studies straight away – unlike degree courses for example, where registration deadlines and course times are strictly applied.

2. A National Senior Certificate or National Certif­ icate (vocational) may not necessarily be required – registering to participate in occupational pro­ grammes don’t necessarily require a matric certifi­ cate and have different entry requirements. These range from Grade 10(NQF­level 2) to Grade 12(NQF­ level4),whichmeansthatifyoudon’thaveaNation­ al Senior Certificate (NSC) you can still start your studies and reach your career aspirations.

3. Open doors to higher learning – occupational programmes make it possible for you to start your studiesholdingaGrade10certificateandendupwith adegree.Thisisbecauseastudentbuildscreditsover a period of time and can use these credits to gain accesstohighereducationcoursesthroughcreditac­ cumulation and transfer (CAT) or recognition of prior learning (RPL).

4. Short course – most occupational pro­ grammes can be completed within a 12 month peri­ od. Once students pass all the required tests and as­ sessments, they receive their awards (certificates) and can enter the job market.

5. Employment ready – occupational pro­ grammes are less theoretical in nature and tend to be more practically orientated in teaching method­ ologyandlearningoutcomes.Someprogrammesare designedwithaworkintegratedlearning(WIL)com­ ponent, during which time students get hands­on practical experience. Once students successfully complete their occupational programmes – the the­ oretical as well as the practical training ­ they are completely ready to work in their chosen occupation.

They can hit the ground running, as employers are fond of saying.

On Friday we witnessed a young boy col­ lapse right in front of us. His peers poured 20 litres of water all over him in an effort to bring him back to consciousness.

Afterwards they put him in a parked car and left him there for about 30 to 50 minutes.

Oneoftheboy’sfriendssaid:“Lethimsleep he will be okay, that is what happens when you drink for the first time.”

The next day we found out that the boy who had collapsed was in hospital because he is diabetic and alcohol is not good for him.

We pray that God will be there for the boy and his family during such a difficult time and we urge children to wait until they are the ap­ propriate age to start drinking alcohol.

We can blame apartheid. We can blame the global financial system. We can blame global warming. We can even blame Jan van Riebeeck.

But in our hearts we know what the bottom truth and the problem is ­ we have allowed those in power to become bigger than our institutions, breaking them down bit by bit under our nose and we have allowed ourselves to become subjects of mockery in the global village.

ROMINENT Durban businessman Vivian Reddy has given a major boost to the King Goodwill Zwelithini's project to fight HIV/ Aids in the province, with a donation of a vehicle and recording equipment at Edison Corporation in Umhlanga on Friday.

Reddy said the recording equipment will be used to video the good work done by the Zwelithini and will be used to spread his messages around the province.

Goodwill Zwelithini thanked Reddy for the generous donation and said thattheequipmentisgreatly appreciated.

"These donations will be used to serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

We are determined to eradicate the spread of HIV/Aids in our province."

Rise to the occasion this Easter FOOD for Life KwaDukuza, a non–profit organisation affiliated with Food for Life South Africa, will deliver 18 000 (72 pots) plates of food to poverty stricken areas in KwaDukuza this Saturday, 14 March.

Food for Life KwaDukuza currently distributes over 2000 plates of free meals per week to the needy at orphanages, schools, old age homes and in poverty stricken areas.

Since the inception of the Food for Life relief programmein2002,theyhaveserved1.25million plates of food in the KwaDukuza area.

Food for Life have partnered with Child Welfare SA - KwaDukuza to assist in delivering

meals to the destitute in and around KwaDukuza.

At their last project in October last year the organisation prepared and distributed a total of 15 000 (60 pots) plates of food together with more than200 volunteers and sponsors.

Food for Life is now appealing to businesses and individuals to get involved in sponsoring, preparing and distributing meals to areas of their choice or join in distributing on Saturday.

A significant relationship has been built between AFDA and the KZN Film Commission over the last three years.

Proteas wither at Eden Park WEEKLY REPORTER THE Proteas withered at the Auck­ land’s Eden Park on Saturday, slump­ ing to a 29­runs defeat at the hands of Pakistan in an ICC Cricket World (Pool B) game.

Pakistan pulled off a hard­fought victory under the Duckworth­Lewis method in a match reduced to 47­ overs. Pakistan posted 222 in 46.4 overs with skipper Mishah­ul­Haq (56) and Sarfraz Ahmed (49) the chief con­ tributors.

The Proteas batsmen squandered a good start in pursuit of their run­ chase, but the loss of wickets at regular intervalsledtotheirdownfall.Noteven the brave heroics of standout skipper and batsman, AB de Villers, who smashed77runsoff58ballscouldsave the blushes of the South African outfit.

Land Rover SA says it could be in South Africa by August 2015.

Land Rover design director and chief creative officer Gerry McGovern said: “The Range Rover Evoque first established and then dominated the luxury compact SUV sector generating worldwide acclaim and sales success. South Africa has to wait until the second quarter of 2016 for delivery — and bear in mind that in Europe the V10 (a new engine) costs the equivalent of R2.1 million and the V10 Plus R2.4 million. South African prices, as always, will be announced at the local launch.

The latest R8 has subtle design changes, the new V10, new all­wheel drive and the latest in Audi technology.

The previous 4.2 V8 has been supersed­ ed by a non­turbo, 5.2­litre, V10 in two vari­ ants. Standard, it’s capable of 402kW/540Nm, 100km/h in 3.5sec and 323km/h. The R8 Plus is tuned for 454kW/560Nm, 3.2sec and 330km/h.

Eachdrivesaseven­speedStronictrans­ mission; fuel consumption for the standard version rated at 11.8 litres/100km with emis­ sions of 275g/km, the Plus at 12.4/100km and 289g/km. The S Tronic comes with manual mode, launch control and coasting mode.

The R8 V10 Plus has a dry weight of 1454kgs, 50kgs less than its predecessor.

The Dawnheights U16 outfit trounced Magnum by 95 runs in an Ilembe Cricket Union U16 League game at the country club on Saturday morning. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted 115/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

KSST emerge victorious in scrappy 2­1 win WEEKLY REPORTER KSST Volleyball Club emerged victorious in a scrappy 2-1 win against Friendz in the semis of the Trophies Engravers Top 8 Knockout Cup (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) at the association courts on Thursday night.

The KSST outfit looked far from the pedigree of their 2012 line-up and the absence of Cameron Singh (who quit KSST to join Liberte at the start of the 2015 season) and Lloyd Chetty have created a huge headache for manager Syd Kistan.

KSST welcomed back prodigal son Kyle Puckree, who had a short training stint with DUT and watched their (KSST) game from the stands a fortnight ago.

Watering between 10:00 and 15:00 you can lose up to 90% of water to evaporation • Every time you boil an egg, save the cooled water for your houseplants. They’ll benefit from the nutrients released from the shell • Focus on indigenous and non-water-consumptive alien plants (but not invasive alien plants) • Group plants according to their water needs and not mulch around them • Water gardens frequently, but water well. Using a garden hose could use as much as 30 litres of water per minute • Clear invasive alien plants on your property • Roof water can also be profitably stored in tanks, for watering gardens • Use “grey water” – used water from baths, washing machines and other safe sources – to water your garden.

KDVA special general meeting WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA Volleyball Association (KDVA) will host a special general meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at The Quartz Conference Centre at 7pm.

All player registration forms (with photos), monies (R70 per player) and

affiliation fees (R500) will be collected at the meeting.

High on the agenda will be the structuring of the league programme for the new season.

There is a strong possibility that KDVA will scrap the social league and incorporate a competitive and division one league. The league is expect-

ed to get under way on Thursday, 26 March.

In other volleyball news, rumours are rife that the country club sports complex (including the volleyball courts, recreation ground, country club, netball and basketball courts) has been sold to a private consortium.

Thembeni broke the deadlock in the eighth minute after Nthando Mthembu latched onto a cross from Sphelele Ndlanzi and headed powerfully past the Stars keeper to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later Thembeni were caught on the counter-attack, but

Thembeni brought on Rocky Zaca for Andile Ngcobo on the left flank at the start of the second half in the hope of sealing the fate of their rivals. In the 55th minute Stars were awarded a dubious free kick just outside the box after Sizwe Mhlongo was alleged to havebeenfouledbytheThembenileft back.

Stars failed to capitalise on the resultant free kick after Mhlongo’s tame shot was comfortably saved by the Thembeni keeper.

Shanmagum outclasses Pillay WEEKLY REPORTER DARREL Shanmagum outclassed Charlie Pillay in straight sets (2­0) in the final of the Nine Pillay and Family sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Associa­ tion singles tournament at the North Coast Tavern in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. Shanmagum romped to a 2­0 win against Jerry Aru­ nachellam in the quarters to secure a place in the semis. Nine Pillay, hoping to clinch the singles tournament (sponsored by himself), was eliminat­ ed (2­0) by Yogan Pillay in the quar­ ters.

Yogan ran out ideas in the semis, producing horrendous darts which led to his 2­0 drubbing at the hands of Shanmagum in the semi­final.

Mill scored a painstaking 12 runs before popping the ball to bowler Alveiro Nadasen, who took a simple catch. Cameron Flower was sent for an early shower after being trapped LBW to a Pillay delivery for a duck.

Devon Kauferman and James Taylor added a valuable 23 run partnership for the ninth wicket, taking the tally from 66/8 to 89/9 before Kauferman (20) was clean bowled by Pillay in the 18th over. Taylor smashed two fours in his 17-runs contribution before being run out in the penultimate over of their innings.
