According to a police source, the charges may later be changed to murder. This is because Sabela was under the influence, shot the red traffic light, fled the scene and killed an innocent person. Peters' family described Peters as awonderful human being who loved life. “The large turnout at his funeral just shows you that Peters was well respected and loved.” Peters leaves behind his wife Roseanne, parents George and Shiela and sisters Mandy and Leann.

As always we were able to compile sufficient evidence before embarking on the take down,” said Captain-Hastibeer. Mayor says rapists not welcome in society WEEKLY REPORTER KWADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembu has expressed shock at the recent rape of two women in Groutville. Mthembu said it was shocking that incidents such as this happened as the country celebrated
women's month. “These attacks undermine our efforts,” he said. As reported in the Weekly, a 72year-old man was shot dead while his daughter and granddaughter were raped. The man was apparently trying to help the women when he was
killed. Mthembu urged police to leave no stone unturned to ensure the perpetrators were arrested and jailed. He said social workers were sent to the family to help with trauma counselling. The mayor also welcomed the arrest of five men ac-
cused of killing an 81-year-old man in Bulwer. The man was found murdered and locked in the boot of his car. “These arrests show that police are serious about ending attacks on the elderly. We hope these arrests will send amessagethatcriminals are not welcome here.”

Protesters demand water >> Doringkop residents say ward councillor gave them “false information” NOTHANDO NDLOVU
O
VER 200 Doringkop residents from Wards 1 and 25 took to the streets on Thursday, demanding that they receive water. The angry residents blocked the roads saying that their ward councillors must be held accountable as they had not received water by 25 September, as promised. “We have taps that have been installed at our houses but there is no running water.
“We now depend on the rain so that we can get water to drink otherwise we have to fetch water from the river, which is not clean,” said a resident. Fearing that they may be sidelined when there are “job opportunities” in the area, three protesters spoke to the Weekly on condition of anonymity. “Our councillor gave us false information. There is a water tanker that delivers water directly to his house, which is why he is not affected by this.
“Today we have not had a bath. We basically cannot do anything without water. “Before the councillors took over, we had running water in our households. But now, the water tanker sometimes only delivers water at 1am.” Ward councillor Wiseman Ndimande declined comment, and instead directed the Weekly to the Ilembe communications’ unit. However, when asked about the water tanker that allegedly delivers water to his house, he said that even
though there is no water in the area, “each person can make means to get water at a certain cost”. A community member said the water problem started in 2008, but pipes were installed in 2011. “Installing the pipes was a waste of government’s money because they are not functioning,” said the resident. According to Ilembe District Municipality’s Communications’ Manager, Zee Nqala, the water is available on stand-pipes. Nqala said this had been the case
Farms handed to emerging farmers MERVYN KRISHNA THE Minister o f Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, visited the Qwabe community in Maphumulo recently. Nkwinti and his delegation visited the local economic development farming initiatives in Mansomini, Dakadaka and Snamfin. In his address, Nkwinti said the Mansomini project is a gold-mine. A total of eight farms in KwaZulu-Natal have been handed to emerging farmers who have increased the productivity of those farms with the help of the industry and government. Nkwinti went on to say the Mansomini sugar cane farming project was started by a group of women three years ago with the aim of supporting their families and uplifting the community. Inkosi Makhosini Qwabe said the project had done a lot for his community, including decreasing the crime rate and keeping skilled people in the area. South African Sugar Association chairman, Bongani Linda said the projects are testimony that partnerships between rural communities, government and the private sector do work. Coordinator Siya Dladla said he could remember picking up people in his old vehicle to take them where they could look for work. “This community was poverty stricken. When I see where we are today and what we have achieved so far, I see we have found a gold-mine here and our gold is sugar cane.”
since the morning of Friday, 27 September. “There was water on 25 September as promised, but more time was needed to energise the whole system. “The district needed to make sure that the reservoir was at a comfortable level to ensure sufficient supply of water to everyone in the area. “The iLembe District Municipality, led by His Worship the Mayor Cllr Welcome Mdabe, would like to apologise profusely to the people of Doringkop for the inconvenience,” said Nqala.
Alleged drug dealers out on bail FOUR men who are believed to be part of a drug syndicate were released on bail at KwaDukuza Magistrate’ Court on Thursday. Nelson Mthembu, Siyabonga Mthethwa, Freedom Sithole and Sembi Ntuli were arrested during the operation ‘Take Down’ which is led by KwaDukuza cluster commander, Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer, in partnership with the National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Local Criminal Records Centre (LCRC) on 4 September. The case was remanded to 13 November.
Petrol attendants strike ends with wage hike AFTER three weeks of strike action, the Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) welcomed an agreement on Friday last week which brought an end to the petrol attendants’ strike. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) signed off on a wage deal that secured an 11.6 percent increase for workers for this year. In 2014, the increase is nine per cent and in 2015, another nine per cent. This means petrol attendants
would receive a wage increase of R2 per hour as of today (Wednesday, 2 October). Numsageneral secretary Irvin Jim hailed the strike as a success. Numsa was still engaged in negotiations with employers in the automotive industry as its workers were still on strike. Jim said they would not accept anything less than a “decent offer”.

HE only way to fight the high rate of drug and alcohol abuse in the area is by having police informers and those who will be brave enough to testify in court when the suspects are arrested, says Sundumbili SAPS spokesman Lt Gideon Mthethwa. Mthethwa was addressing over 500 residents at a crime awareness campaign held at Buhle BeSundumbili sports stadium on Thursday. The campaign was held after ward councillor Chris Ngcobo, Mandeni Municipality, and SAPS asked the KZN Department of Community Safety and Liaison to intervene. Mthethwa said: “It is sad to see that Sundumbili has become a depot for drugs. We are facing a huge risk as our children are affected by drugs.
“We need the community to act as whistle-blowers so that drug dealers can be placed behind bars.” He said people are too scared to testify after arrests have been made, which leads to the dealers walking free. Mthethwa said the police were doing their job as they arrested 250
criminals during the April 2012 to March 2013 financial year. Ngcobo urged parents to talk to theirchildrenregardingdrugsandalcohol. District coordinator, Dorah Nsibande said: “We are here to speak to the youth. Statistics indicate that they are the ones who are occupying
correctional service centres, taverns and other places. We are here to fight drugs. Let’s work together in doing this. Everything that happens in the community is in your hands.” A member of Narcotics Anonymous, Revashan Naidoo , also spoke to the crowd about his addiction. “I left school because of drugs and
ended up on the streets. Thereafter I went to rehab and because of God’s mercy I no longer smoke.” He encouraged youngsters who have an addiction to turn to God for guidance. “Even though it was really hard to quit, God helped me do it. It is not impossible.”

Agreeing with Hlatswayo, chairman of the Stanger Heights/ DoktorskopNeighbourhoodWatchandCivic Association, Anil Kissoonlal said the community must be more proactive. Kissoonlal added they had a good working relationship with the police and the local security companies had jointly been successful in clamping down on crime in the area. “Currently, we have very little crimes reported in our area. Previously we had several robberies and theft in the area. We curbed the problembyusingresidentstopatrolthearea. “We start at 6pm until the early hours of the morning.” He added that without his dedicated team doing patrols, the crime figures in the area would have been high. “Theonlywaythingswillgetbetter is if we take charge and let criminals think they have the freedom to do as they wish,” said Kissoonlal .
“T
HE only way to fight crime is to take charge,” says newly elected KwaDukuza Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Sipho Hlatswayo. According to the crime statistics released last week, crime is on the up in KwaDukuza. House burglaries rose to 969 compared with last year's 732, hijackings are up by 35 and murder. Hlastwayo said on the ground statistics makes very little difference as there was a general feeling of fear. “Residents need to create a safe environment by being the eyes and ears for the police. Make it your duty to do patrols and contact the police if you notice any suspicious activity,” said Hlastwayo. “The reason for the increase in crime can be attributed to residents not being proactive. Many people are of the view that by patrolling you are puttingyourlifeatrisk.Thisisnottrue because we do not apprehend people, but instead contact police for assistance.” He added that residents need to be more alert and follow crime trends in

Alleged robber hangs himself at Newark SAPS NOTHANDO NDLOVU A 31-year-old man was found hanging in a holding cell at the Newark police station after he was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Tuesday. MfanafuthiSheziwhousedthealias ‘Siyabonga Mthembu’ was arrested in Hlomendlini for allegedly carrying an unlicensed firearm. Newark media liaison officer, Malusi Ngubane said this is the first time such an incident occurred at the sta-
tion. “Concerned community members who saw a suspicious and unknown limping man in possession of a firearm informed the police on Tuesday. “We usually do not keep any of the suspects at the Newark police station, but send them to KwaDukuza police station. However, Shezi slept over and was going to be sent to KwaDukuza on Wednesday. “When two police officers arrived at the cell on Wednesday they noticed he had climbed onto the toilet and tied the
blankets on the burglar guards, hanging himself.” He said Shezi was alone in the cell at the time. It is alleged that Shezi was a suspect in many cases of business robberies and house robberies in Mandeni and Durban. “It is alleged that Shezi also robbed KFC and the Post Office in Mandeni.” NgubanesaidtheMalvernpolicereported that Shezi is also suspected to have shot at police during a robbery which is when he got shot in the foot.

Being a great Financial Cents
M
OST people who rent homes tend to focus most of their energy on their tenant rights, and why not! This is important since you do not want to be mis treated as a tenant. Renters should also focus on building a great relationship with their landlords and neighbours.Whydothis?Becausegreattenantshave an upper hand when it comes to rental negotiations and increases. Happy neighbours mean less awkward confronta tions, and a happy landlord means peaceful living without surprise checkups, and when it comes time to renew the lease, a great tenant knows the landlord won’t drop them suddenly and may even be able to renegotiate the terms favourably. A good rental his tory could get you lower rent rates without moving and more perks on your lease renewal. SOME USEFUL TIPS FOR WAYS YOU CAN BE THAT GREAT TENANT:Read your lease Read your lease cover to cover before you sign it. It will help you pick up potential problems before they actually happen. Good landlords will work with you on the terms of the lease. If you have a special circum stance, such as a family member or friend who visits regularly, tell the landlord about it ahead of time. Let the landlord know if you are going to keep pets and agree on how many and how you intend tak ing care of them. If the landlord makes any verbal agreement with you, like mowing the lawn and painting, make sure he puts it in writing in the lease. Then ask for a copy of the lease for yourself as soon as you sign it. Having a wellrounded lease will help you avoid any tenant’s
Great tenants have an upper hand when it comes to rental negotiations and increases
rights issues later on. Don’t break the lease Most renters think of breaking a lease in terms of the big things like not paying the rent, cutting out early or subletting without permission. However, smaller leasepointscounttoo.Whilealandlordcantechnical lyevictatenantforbreakinganytermofalease, most won’t.Butthebetteryousticktoyourlease, thebetter chance you have of existing peacefully. Pay your rent on time Nothing makes a landlord happier than a renter who paysrentontime.Youmightevenscoreafewbrownie points if you pay a few days early. Since no one is im mune from financial hardship, if you know you might have to pay late one month, let your landlord know as soon as possible. The landlord may not mind the late payment as much, if you’re upfront about it. Treat your rental like you own it Taking good care of your rented place will ensure that you get your deposit back when you move out, and it will also put you in a good standing with your land lord. While normal wear and tear is typical in rental units, donotcauseanymajordamagetotheproperty. Damages will eat away at your security deposit and annoy your landlord. People speak! You being a good tenant to the landlord increases your chances if your circumstances changeandyouneedanotherapartmenttorent, your positive image helps. If your landlord is considering selling his property he would rather sell it to someone like you who is ca pable of taking good care of such property. You might even be able to negotiate a deal of a lifetime, only because you have been a good tenant!

The power of choice
A bit about
EVERY person makes countless choices everyday. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. Even significant choices can affect what we experi ence and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a nutritious snack, or we can choose the high of junk food. So the more important the decision, the more profound its effect. For instance, how do we act towards that person who treated us badly? Do we generally choose to be passive, or do we actively set clear intentions and create what we want in our lives? Every choice we make, however big or small, af fects us in some way! If you're interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you and I can base all our decisions which can make life better not only for us, but also for those around us. This foundation is to choose based on what's best what's best for ourselves and others.
Imagine if every parent, spouse, friend, teacher, businessperson and politician truly did their best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world! "But how do we know what is really best?" you might ask. The answer is simple. It does not matter. What mat ters is not the choice we make, but rather the inten tions behind our choices. Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. For example, an overly exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her be a better mother to her children. So as we move on through the days of our lives, letusremembertoincludeourselvesaswedoourbest to choose what's best for all of us...

When should a Breast Self-Examination (BSE) be done? By doing BSE regularly, you get to know how your breasts normally feel so that you are more apt to detect any change. Women should start breast selfexamina tionat20yearsoldandcontinuethepractice throughout their lives even during pregnan cy and after menopause. Breast selfexamination should be per formed every month. Become familiar with how your breasts
usually look and feel so that you will notice any changes from what is normal for you. >> If you still menstruate, the best time to do BSE is several days, or about a week, after your period ends. These are the days when your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen. >>Ifyounolongermenstruate, pickacertain day such as the first day of each month to remind yourself to do BSE. >> If you are taking hormones, talk with your physician about when to do BSE.

In front of a mirror: Raise your arms above your head to check for changes in size, shape and contour of each breast. Look for puckering, dimpling or changes in skin texture. Gently squeeze both nipples and look for dis charge.
This illustration shows you how to check each breast. Begin at point A and follow the arrows, feeling for a lump or thickening. Remem ber to feel all parts of each breast. Most lumps are not cancer ous, but if you find one, you should get it checked by a doctor immediately.
Lying down: Lie down with you arm tucked behind your head. With the other hand and with your fingers flat tened, feel the opposite breast.
Underarm area: Begin in the un derarm area and move your fingers down until they are below the breast. Move your fingers in toward the centre and go slowly back up. Cover the whole area, going up and down. With your arm resting on a firm surface, use the same motion to examine the underarm.
ho gets breast cancer? One out of 15 women will develop the disease at some stage during her lifetime. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is not necessarily restricted to a lump in the breast when diagnosed, although that is generally the first sign of the disease. As a matter of fact, it is not the lump itself that kills, but rather the spreading of cancerous cells to other parts of the body, a phenomenon known as metastasis. Breast cancer - a death sentence? It has been proven in large overseas studies that a mastectomy (removal of the breast) offers no survival benefit, when compared with treatment that removes only the lump. Small lumps can be removed with excellent cosmetic results. This approach results in far less mutilation and emotional distress for the individual. Withadvancesinchemotherapy, hormonal and gene therapy, it is rarely necessary to perform a mastectomy. A mastectomy should not be offered as first treatment. Its application is restricted to very specific cases.
Changes to be aware of: Check with your physician or contact your nearest breast clinic, if you find any change in your breast(s) that causes you concern. Changes in your breasts may include: >>development of a lump >>adischargeotherthanbreastmilk >>swelling of the breast >>skin irritation or dimpling >>nipple abnormalities (i.e., pain, redness, scaliness, turning inward)
TH ADVANCES CHEMOTHERA, HORMONAL ND GENE THERPY, IT IS RARELY ECESSARY TO RFORM A MASCTOMY
What if the lump is too big? There is a strong possibility that some cancer cells have already found their way via the blood stream to other parts of the body (bone, lung or liver). These cancer cells that went astray (micro-metastasis)cannotalwaysbedetected with the available tests such as xrays and scans. With a large tumour there is more than a 70% chance of micro-metastasis. Systemic treatment (chemotherapy ± hormonal therapy) should then be administered to shrink the tumour and at the same time kill the cells outside the boundaries of the breast. If the tumour has shrunk sufficiently, it can be removed with good cosmetic results - resulting in far less trauma and mutilation for the patient.
What causes Breast Cancer? While the causes of breast cancer is not yet known, there are important factors that may place you at risk. Risk factors : being over the age of 50 >> if your mother or sister had breast cancer, especially if it developed be fore menopause >> if you have never had a child or had your first child after the age of 30 >> early menstruation before your

Mammograms are essential What is a mammogram? A mammogram is a lowdose breast Xray that can de tect cancer in the breast even before a lump is felt. It is currently the best method of detec tion. How is a mammogram done? When a woman has a mammo gram, she stands next to the xray machine and a ra diologist helps to place her breast between two compression plates (plastic trays) which flat ten the breast while the Xray is taken. The plates are used to com press the breast to a thickness of about 46cm. More compression requires less radia tion and the bet ter the image pro duced. It may be a little uncomfort able for a while, but the procedure is well worth it. Who should have a mammogram? For woman over 50 a mammo gram should be done every one two years (Euro pean recommen dation). The American Cancer Association rec ommends yearly mammograms from the age of 40. Have a mammogram .... it can detect breast cancer years before you can.

Diversity celebrated at KwaDukuza SAPS NOTHANDO NDLOVU
K
WADUKUZA SAPS celebrated heritage month with song, dance and traditional food at the police station on Wednesday. According to spokesperson constable Sbusiso Khumalo the event was held to embrace diversity as the staff members were dressed in Zulu, Hindu and Isixhosa attire. “In order to know where we are going, we need to know where we come from. “We need to remember the past and entice it so that we do not forget where we want to be,” said Khumalo, describing the event as a huge success. The event was completed with various dishes from the different cultures. “We hope to host this event every year as it is important to remember our roots as members of the SAPS.”

JOURNEY TO RETIRING THE RIGHT WAY 1. Set your retirement goal Before you start your journey, you can estimate how much money you will need to save for retirement to maintain your current standard of living. A pension equal to 60% to 75% of the salary you are earning in the year before you retire will be enough. For example, if your income before you retired is R10 000, a pension of R7 000 should be enough to maintain your lifestyle.
to cut down on unnecessary spending. For example, eat less takeout food and prepare home-cooked meals.
4. Don’t be tempted to cash in your fund before retirement It can be very tempting to dip into your retirement fund to help pay off debt now. If you are retrenched or resign from your job, move your retirement money to a preservation fund or another retirement product. If you cash out your retirement fund and spend the money, you will have to save twice as much to make up for it. 5. Know your options when you retire As you get closer to retirement, you need to start considering the details of the annuity that you will purchase. An annuity is a policy where you will invest your retirement fund to secure a regular pension. At retirement, you will be faced with a number of annuity options, for example a living annuity, joint life annuity, etc. This is a critical stage in your retirement journey. Your financial adviser can explain each type of annuity along with the advantages and disadvantages of each.
2. Find the best retirement savings option You can save for retirement in a retirement annuity (RA), pension or preservation fund, savings plan or bank account.A retirement annuity is designed for Wilfred Moyo, Investment & Economic retirement savings and you get tax breaks as well. Strategist at Metropolitan You can save a set amount every month into your RA to build up a retirement fund. You can also save a large single amount of money into your RA (i.e. you can save R300 every month or R1 000 every three months).
6. Shop around for competitive annuity rates When choosing an annuity, compare the annuity rates offered by the various insurance companies. The annuity rate is the rate of interest used to determine your monthly annuity amount. The higher the annuity rate, the more pension you’ll receive. Try to aim for the company that offers the best annuity rates.
3. Check your savings regularly against your retirement goal Retirement is a long-term saving goal. You need to check the retirement fund value against your retirement goal. A qualified financial adviser can assist you by using the right financial tools. If you are not savings enough to meet your target, you may have to increase your contribution to your retirement fund. You can start by revising your monthly budget

UNEMPLOYED social workers called to register THE minister for social development, Bathabile Dlamini, has called on unemployed social workers to register on a new database aimed at keeping a record of all unemployed qualified social workers in the country. The database will be used to lobby for funds to create social work posts that are required within the public service. Currently there are 9 456 socialworkersintheemployofgovernment. The Unemployed Social Workers Database will also inform the departmentaboutthenumberofunemployed social workers who have studied outside the Social Development scholarship programme. Maharaj comes out TOPS South Africa’s best history teacher comes from KwaDukuza MERVYN KRISHNA
S
TANGER High School teacher, Verosha Maharaj has been voted the best history teacher in South Africa. This was announced at the 2013 national finals for the Albert Luthuli Oral History Competition in Pretoria last week during a gala dinner. The Department of Basic Education’s deputy director–general GT Ndebele presented Maharaj with a trophy, certificate and a R3 000 Woolworths voucher. The competition is a project of the Department of Basic Education, supported by the South African History Online (SAHO). Pupils and teachers are invited to enter the competition annually by producing an oral history research project that investigates unique aspects of their local history and heritage. This competition forms part of the department’s contribution to the
strengthening of history as a subject of choice in schools and is named after the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate South of the Sahara, Nkosi Albert John Luthuli. Apart from Luthuli’s fight for total emancipation of the oppressed, he was also an educationist of note, having taken up his first teaching assignment at Adams College where he completed his Higher Teachers’ Training Course. The provincial elimination rounds culminated in the finals held at the Department of Basic Education’s Sol Plaatje House from 20 to 22 September. The winners were announced at a gala evening following an extensive adjudication process. The were three parts to Maharaj’s presentation. The first part dealt with the mythology of teaching oral history. The second part gave examples from their community which included, General Justice Gizenga Mpanza, Shaka’s Monument, Luthuli Museum and the history of indentured labourers. Maharaj also had to submit a work plan and explain what the pupils gained after researching and complet-

ANDHIR “Tinboy” Jugmohan inspired Randsons to a morale-boosting victory against Grove End in an EZE’S Electrical-sponsored Stanger and District Volleyball Association Competitive League game played at the association courts on Thursday. Randsons capitalised on the absence of Grove End’s play-maker, Ronald “Tiger” Ponnsamy to take a commanding 8-0 lead. With Satish Bhowanibhik serving in the role as setter, Grove End had to pin their hopes on the talented 18-year-old Vinnie Singh and veteran campaigner Neil Perumal to turn the tide in their favour. The introduction of Raj Naidoo midway in the opening set created more attacking options for the Grove End outfit, who gradually chewed away the deficit to close the gap to just 2-points (18-20). After a sluggish start, Grove End found a new lease of life and quickly moved to match-point (24-22).
