Weekend of road madness

SHANNON HOPKINS

T

HE demoltion of the old N2 bridge on Friday evening resulted in a major traffic congestion at the weekend. This was due to an influx of Rage festival goers, holiday makers and to north and south highway traffic being diverted through Ballito. The new bridge had already been opened before the demolition took place to accommodate traffic. The N2 was reopened at 6pm on Sunday after after being closed at about 6pm on Friday. Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) resident engineer Dave Kendall said the weekend had been stressful, but that at least the job is now done. “With the holiday season coming up, it was feasible to remove the old bridge as this is the last weekend before the holidays – it just would have been too busy thereafter. “Traffic was very congested, but the work was done in under the 53 hours allocated and we are pleased with the way it went off,” he said. Kendall said that the demolition had been subject to much planning and no damage had been done to the N2 highway during the work. He said that the central pier holding up the bridge was blasted out in order to col-

hospital near Ashton College during the weekend, and neither of the two officers got out to help direct the traffic. North Coast KwaDukuza Ratepayers Association (NKKRPA) chairman Ray Millican said that he wrote to authorities about the matter of festive season traffic and what concerns him is the that there are no traffic control measures in place to date. “How do they (authorities) intend controlling the influx of people and vehiclesalsotakingintoconsiderationall the events taking place? We have to consider day trippers from surrounding areas, holiday makers, residents plus people coming to all the events. “Worse still is most of the traffic is currently controlled by the contractors, and they are commencing holidays on about 13 December. The question arising is, what measures are going to be put in place to control this?” said Millican. He said that it took him about an hour and a half to get to the pharmacy on Friday afternoon - normally a 10 minute trip. Work started on the multimillion rand N2 upgrade in 2011 and isscheduledtobecompletedinthefirst half of next year. Engineers said delays were due mainly to the original company, KNS Construction, going insolvent in April last year, coupled with bad weather

IN the 29 November edition of Stanger Weekly it was incorrectly reported, in a article titled “Bringing back the spirit of Ubuntu”, that KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigating officer Christina Subraylu said she was unhappy with a sentence handed down to a convicted rapist. In fact, Subraylu was involved in the plea negotiation process and the outcome of the matter. According to the National Prosecuting Authority based in Stanger, all parties (investigating officer, complainant, prosecution and defence) were satisfied with the outcome as a guilty verdict was resultant as opposed to a withdrawal. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

lapse the bridge. He said there was still some rubble on the sides of the N2 that would be crushed and removed soon. Kendall said that although there are other ways of undertaking the work, this was the quickest. “If we had used any other method, the N2 traffic would have had to be diverted for weeks, which we just did not have the time for.” But residents said that they were disappointed that they had not been informed of the demolition before Friday morning. A visitor from Hillcrest said traffic had been backed up almost to the Tongaat toll at one stage on Saturday. With the traffic being diverted and road works in a separate project continuing on the R102 near Tongaat, even the M4 beach road and the R102 were very congested. Ballito resident, Norman Gray, said contractors were “totally mad” to do the demolition when they did, as it could just as easily have been carried out after the holiday period. “The traffic on Friday and Saturday was shocking - in fact try almost any day at 3pm until 5:30pm. If this is an example of what it is going to be like after 13 December, it is scary,” said Gray. He added that a traffic department vehicle had been stuck beside him at the traffic lights coming down from the

Retailer's Association and SAPS to fight CBD crime WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HE KwaDukuza Retailer's Association (KRA) held a “groundbreaking”meeting with the KwaDukuza SAPS on Thursday last week to address crime in the CBD. Businessman Shain Manjoo, speaking on behalf of the KRA, said: “Crime in the CBD has reached alarming proportions with many retailers recently having been subject to brazen, armed robberies and theft. “We requested a meeting with the SAPS on short notice and were pleased with the quick response by station commander Brigadier Bongiwe Sithole. She must be commended for her professionalism, commitment and determination to eradicate crime in the CBD.” The steering committee of the KRA expressed the vulnerability of businesses to crime and stressed the importance of increased police visibility and

more foot patrols. They also requested that a mobile unit becentrallylocatedinthe town gardens. In her address, Sithole praised the KRA and pledged the full support of the SAPS. “We want to partner with business to combat crime and have already deployed more police officers to the CBD during the festive season. “We will also ensure high police presence throughout the year. We are serious about fighting crime and will exert the full might of the law when it comes to criminality.” She added that businesses must embrace technology and install monitoring equipment such as CCTV cameras as this assists greatly with arrests and convictions. To assist with response times, the KRA will donate a free cell phone to the SAPS. This phone will be dedicated to businesses in the CBD. Businesses will soon be given

this cell number to be called in the event of emergencies. Furthermore, the KRA will consider providing formal and informal traders with whistles to be blown in distress situations thereby alerting other businesses aboutcriminalactivityinthearea. Manjoo said the KRA will assist the SAPS by identifying known criminals and highlighting notorious areas in the CBD with high incidents of criminality. “We are awaiting confirmation of a meeting with the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM). KDM will be encouraged to integrate their crime fighting efforts with the SAPS and also to install more CCTV cameras in the CBD together with loudspeakers so that the controller can raise the alarm to prevent criminal activity.” The KRA committee thanked Sithole for her proactive approach and encouraged all businesses to join the association and to become more vigilant against crime. From left are: Faizel Desai (KRA), Vanessa Vengadsamy (KRA), Brigadier Bongiwe Sit hole (SAPS station commander), Shain Man joo (KRA), Colonel Faya (SAPS Crime Preven tion), Pravin Singh (KRA), Captain Ngcobo (SAPS Business Watch).

Hope for the community with their children for failing to pay rent.” One of the women, Laura Mashego, left her abusive husband and had been renting a room with her two children for several years. Jobhi Sokhela (58) whose husband died a few years ago, said she had been moving from one rented room to the next as she could not afford to pay for accommodation for herself and her four children.

She had registered for the government’s housing scheme, but had almost given up hope of receiving a home when nothing happened as promised last year. “But today I feel so alive, I cannot believe I have my own home,” she said, clutching the set of keys handed to her by the mayor. Another recipient, Themba Ntombela (55) said her first home had burnt down. She was never

married and has had to provide shelter for her three children by working part time. The new home has brought hope and security for Gladys Zuma (55) a single mother of two. “I have never owned a house in my life. I hope this brings security to my children,” she said, adding that both children’s fathers had died and she was the sole provider. Mthembu said that the houses

were a small contribution to ease the pain and suffering of the women and children. “Today we stand here to contribute to the eradication of violence against women and children,” he said, adding that most women who suffered abuse at the hands of their partners ended up homeless. The houses are part of the housing department’s contribution to the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

EADING to the “world cup of architecture”is any young and upcoming architect’s dream, and for local lad Nischolan Pillay this dream is about to come true. Pillay, who is currently completing his masters degree in architecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, along with four of his fellow students, were the only architects in the country selected to participate in the International Union of Architects (UIA) Competition Studio. The competition forms one part of the UIA Conference which will take place in South Africa for the first time at the UKZN and Durban University of Technology campuses in July next year. The 24-year-old Stanger Manor Secondary School alumni was selected by architecture programme lecturers after he created an urban design scheme and submitted solutions for interventions around the dynamic Warwick Junction site in Durban. “The urban design scheme that was done in a group is based on redesigning Warwick for better use of transport systems as well as making trade more accessible and viable as a

MEC joins mayors to wage war on the spread of HIV

WEEKLY

LEMBE District is making progress in its fight against HIV and Aids after reaching 79 percent of its HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) campaign target. To date, the local health department has completed pre-counselling of people and tested thousands of the target set for the end of December 2013. iLembe District mayor Welcome Mdabe ,who is also the chairperson of the iLembe District Aids Council, made this announcement during the district's commemoration of World Aids Day in Ndwedwe on Sunday. The event was attended by the four local

mayors: KwaDukuza, Ndwedwe, Maphumulo and Mandeni together with traditional leaders, healers and religious leaders and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha who was the guest speaker. The day started off with a prayer at the Ndwedwe taxi rank, public testing by all including prominent figures and signing of a pledge by all mayors committing themselves to lead the fight against HIV/Aids in the district. Mdabe said: “This is a clear indication that we are in a province that is taking responsibility and determined to change the course of the pandemic. These figures are an encouragement to all those who are working tirelessly in the fight against the pandemic.” The mayor revealed that in a period of three months (August, September and October) this

people with many different beliefs. Chris tians celebrate Christmas because we are filled with Joy at the gift we received 2 000 years ago when God sent His only Son to us. “So many people have lost sight of the true meaning of Christmas and they believe that Christmas is all about Santa or all about toys! “Christmas means so much more than the gifts beneath your tree. God loved us so much, that even though we are all sinners, He designed a way to bridge the gap be tween us and Him. He sent us a Saviour in a little baby in a manger. It is not a fairy tale. The birth of Jesus is a true event in history and because of the Father’s love for us, we now have hope of life everlasting,” said Pas tor Harry.

WADUKUZA’S festive season kicked into top gear on Sunday when the an nualswitchonofthe“Jesusistherea son for the Season” on the Stanger Manor overhead bridge, hosted by the Stanger Minister’s Forum. The event, which included the lighting of the bridge, a 500 seater marquee, fully dec orated with table setting and mutton and chicken breyani was sponsored by Vees and Viloshnie Verasamy of Stanger Manor. Verasamy said he was pleased with the attendance at this year’s switchon. His vi sion next year is to bring all God’s people of KwaDukuzatogetherattheStangerRecrea tion Ground and “give Him all the Praise,

Chairman of the Stanger Minister’s Fo rum, Pastor BD Saul said God has laid upon his heart to bring all the churches of KwaDukuza together under one marquee for a citywide crusade, which will see come to fruition next year. Saul on behalf of the forum thanked Ve rasamy and his family for the generous sponsorship. He also thanked all those who played a major role in making the event a success. Pastor Harry Solomon who played a ma jor role said believers of Jesus celebrate Christmas as the birthday of Jesus. “Christmasandwhatisthetruemeaning of Christmas? Tackling the ‘water’ issue HOPING to allay the fears of residents on the North Coast as to whether or not there will be water restrictions over the holiday season, Hirsch’s Ballito recently held a talk with Shyam Mizra, the managingdirectorofSembcorp who own Siza water – the suppliers ofwatertotheBallito area. Glenda Thompson,Hirsch’sPRconsultant, said: “It was good to hear that everything is in place for a wet festive season!” The locally situated reservoirs normally pump 12 million litres a day to residents in the area. During the months of December and January, this will go up to 18 million. She said plans are in place for a desalination plant, and this should be in time for all the new developments. “Also it is very interesting to hear is that our water is extremely palatable and we don’t need to drink bottled water. Quality checks are done on the water every day.”

It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, as part of us went with you the day God took you home. In life we loved you so dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts we hold a special place that only you can fill. Our hearts ache in sadness and secret tears flow, what it meant to lose you, no one will ever know. Always on our minds, forever in our hearts. Treasured you will stay, until we meet someday… Sadly missed by family and friends.
