A WEEK ago, Robert Zungu (25) started a new job as a call centre agent in Durban.

On Thursday, he died in an accident on the R74 Maphumulo Highway when the vehicle he was travelling in veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

Zungu, a father of two, died of a suspected broken neck at the scene.

Zungu's father, Bonginkosi , who lives in the Kearsney area, said his son started a new job a few days earlier.

“He was excited and told me he wanted to get his life on track. On Thursday my wife and I picked

him up from the KwaDukuza taxi rank after work in Mount Edgecombe.

“When he got home he said he wanted to spend an hour or two with a friend who was celebrating his birthday. That is the last we saw him,” said the distraught father.

He added there were four people in the car and his son was in the back seat. It is believed a second person died the following day at Stanger Hospital. Robert is survived by his parents, wife Mbali and daughters Slindile (5) and Zodwa (3).

His funeral will take place on Saturday at the KwaDukuza Cemetery.

KwaDukuza SAPS are investigating the accident.

LOT 14 teenager can’t use her right arm after she was electrocuted while shower-

ing.

The grade 11 pupil at Glenhills Secondary School is unable to write her mid-year examinations either, which are scheduled to start in a few days.

The mid-year results would have been used to apply for accountancy studies at university.

The pupil, who asked not to be named, was discharged from Stanger Hospital a week ago but has not returned to school.

Instead, she attends daily physiotherapy sessions in the hope that

she regains use of her arm.

Her father, Devan Naidoo, said the muscles were damaged and could take six months or longer to heal.

“I was taking a shower and had a shampoo bottle in my left hand; I used my right hand to lift the shower lever to release water,” said the girl.

“When I touched the tap, I felt a surge. My hand was stuck to the

metal. I tried to scream but I could not. I then tried to get my family’s attention by throwing the shampoo bottle on the floor, but I could not release it.

“I was scared,” she said.

She eventually managed to call for help, with her brother entering the bathroom first.

He pushed her away from the tap and in the process also felt a surge.

“I initially thought there was a problem with my geyser until I called a plumber to see what happened.

But the fault was not on my side. I think the live wire on the electricity pole touched the earth, causing it to become electrically charged.

“Since these wires are attached to copper pipes, the entire plumbing system became live, resulting in anyone touching something metal being electrocuted.”

Neighbours claimed they also felt slight surges when they touched the taps at their homes.

The KwaDukuza Municipality has been contacted about the incident and say they are currently investigating the possible cause.

Thumbs-up for Welfare Education Fair MERVYN KRISHNA THE local Department of Education has given the thumbs-up for all

schools in the Lower Tugela region to participate in the Child Welfare SA KwaDukuza Edison Power Group Winter Fair Edufair.

The Edufair will take place on Thursday, 26 June at the Stanger Recreation Ground and starts at 10am.

The KZN DoE has given the greenlight for all schools in the Lower Tugela Circuit to close at 10am so that they can attend the fair.

Schools will be contacted via the Lower Tugela Circuit office about the

number of pupil who will be attending. A special voucher for pupils attending the Edufair costs R20 and will grant them entrance to the fair ground, a hot dog, cold drink and a free ride at Tommy Chetty’s Fun Fair.

The voucher is only valid for school-going children until 5pm on Thursday. A top entertainment lineup is on the cards for the Edufair.

A special mini spelling bee will be held for high school pupils in the build-up to the KZN Premier Spelling Bee hosted by the Media 24 Local

Newspaper group in KZN. The KZN DoE, KwaDukuza Municipality Youth Affairs, LoveLife, KwaDukuza Maths Association, Master Maths, the Department of Justice together with various other stakeholders will also be on the ground to empower pupils.

National Child Protection Week is commemorated in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.

The campaign, which began in 1997, also aims to mobilise all sectors of society to ensure the care and protection of children.

Taking your local media beyond ‘lekker’

DESIREE ERASMUS I AM not a fan of the media. Rather, I am not a fan of what is increasingly known as the ‘mainstream media’ (MSM), which can be described as “those media disseminated via the largest distribution channels, which therefore represent what the majority of media consumers are likely to encounter. The term also denotes those media generally reflective of the prevailing currents of thought, influence, or activity.”

The emphasis in the last sentence is

mine, and it is here that I find most of my frustration with the MSM coming to the fore; not because they reflect the “prevailing currents of thought, influence, or activity”, but because MSM very often dictate these things instead of reflecting them.

In other words, mainstream media very often tell us what we should be thinking, saying and doing, while local media have a tendency to reflect what we are thinking, saying and doing.

This is done irrespective of our thoughts or actions fitting into a politically correct world view, which is largely driven by (drum-roll) the MSM. It is for this reason that I believe local/ community media to be a purer form of news dissemination than national or international MSM. This may also be one of the reasons that local news is one of the few growth sectors in print media.

Local media have the benefit of intimacy – meaning readers are able to quickly verify articles on issues that take place

in their immediate surroundings. Because of this, the ability to hold accountable the newspaper or a quoted source is easier than with national or international stories or journalists.

Too, local media publish unique copy; stories that are not plastered all over the Internet on an hourly basis via aggregation. For the uninformed, aggregation is the new black when it comes to expeditiously repackaging breaking news, or simply filling daily online copy quotas.

Copy quotas are the most recent goldencalfformediaexecutives. Driving online traffic through regular copy uploading is intended to whet the appetite of potential online advertisers and thus supplement dwindling print advertising revenue.

As for aggregation, it means we have access to the same story over many Internet sites, but the more disturbing factor is the potential for plagiarism and diminished accountability. Who exactly do you call if you find an error in a story that has

been aggregated and disseminated across 10 online titles?

Mainstream media are battling – as their own projections, research and ubiquitous navel-gazing reveal. Cuts in advertising spending due to ‘the economy’ and loss of readership due to social media have had a very real impact on shrinking news rooms and revenue. Despite this, there is also the issue of content which needs to be addressed by our MSM friends. It is time they shift their gaze from their navels and try less superficial introspection when it comes to what they publish, which very often borders on liberal-leaning activism instead of reporting.

The word ‘activism’ fits snugly with the word ‘agenda’, which the MSM would do well to remember, given that they are often accused of agendas and bias.

And to think that readers or viewers do not know the difference between activism-journalism and the often banal world of reporting is, of course, just good old-fashioned editorial hubris.

Death by lack of ambulance THE iLembe District is growing in leaps and bounds yet the needs of its people take a back seat.

I look on in bemusement at the fact that our ambulance service now has only one working ambulance.

The paramedics are clocking their cards and sitting idle for their shifts as there is no ambulance available.

Howdoesthisextremelyessential service meet the needs of the many people requiring such services with only one vehicle?

Shouldn’t the acquisition of more ambulances be a top priority? The shortage of ambulances couldmeanthedeathofmanypeople due to illness or accidents, many of which can be avoided if essential care is given timeously.

This can only be done if there are sufficient ambulances to meet the needs of the people.

The end of a special era at Emmets JYOTHI LALDAS

FTER more than 65 years of serving the community of KwaDukuza, businessman Frank du Toit and his loyal staff at Emmetts are bidding the

community a fond farewell.

Homeware store Emmetts closed its doors in Chief Albert Luthuli Street on Saturday, 31 May, ending an era, with Du Toit heading of into retirement.

Speaking to the Weekly, Du Toit and his long time manager Saras Naidoo said while they are looking forward to a period of rest, there was not a day that went by that they did not look forward to going to work.

Seventy-nine-year-old Du Toit, who plans to relax and travel to Australia to spend time with his children and grandchildren, said

they have been is business for so long that children who once came into the store with their parents are now adults who come into the store for their own homeware.

Du Toit said his formula for success is buying good quality stock and marketing it well.

“At Emmetts we always pride ourselves in our personal relationships with our clients. We have built strong bonds in the community and these relationships far surpass business.”

Du Toit is also well known in the community for his extensive

work as a ward councillor and with the municipality. “ I plan to spend more time on municipal community work.

Naidoo, who has 48 years of experience with Emmetts said she raised her four children on her salary. Anemotional Naidoo said closingdownisahighlytraumatic experience.

“This store became my life and after my children grew up it has kept me going. I will miss the people the most. This is a very emotional time for us all but I hope to be back soon with my own enterprise.”

Media24 Local News KZN (publishers of the Fever, Echo and Weekly titles) has partnered with the Office of the Premier to bring previously disadvantaged learners throughout the province their popular spelling bee competition.

A spelling bee works according to knock-out, where spellers are given a list of pre-chosen words (which will be printed in the above mentioned titles) two months before the competition.

These words must be learned by entrants, who will then gather at competitions in their areas, namely Zululand, North Coast, Durban central, Pietermaritzburg or the South Coast, to spell their way to glory.

The competition is open to grade 10 and 11 learners (one from each grade - ie two per school)frompreviouslydisadvantagedschools who speak English as a second language.

There are hundreds of thousands of rands in prizes up for grabs, including a full medical bursary, a business bursary and a bursary to study journalism.

Teachers and schools also receive prizes for producing the top spellers.

The words for the KZN Premier Spelling Bee 2014 will be printed in the Fever, Echo and Weekly titles in the week of 20 June, with the competitions taking place in August throughout the province.

Decorate your letters. We simply used stickers but you can use gems, ribbons, sequins, pompoms or anything else from your craft box.

Glue a photo to the back of each letter so that it fills the aperture.

Trim any overhanging bits of photo away.

Layer the letters so they overlap slightly, spelling out the word “Dad”, and glue together.

You could laminate the photo frame to make it last, or enclose the whole thing within a larger Perspex frame.

Boston boys tried to keep their composure in the hula hoop game, BOSTON College Stanger hosted a games and social day at the Stanger Recreation Grounds on Wednesday last week.

Students formed teamsandparticipated against one another in a number of games, which entailed each team member completing a set of activities and racing to the finish line. According to organisers, team membersdisplayedexcellent sportsmanship as they cheered one another on.

The day kicked-off with a “fill the bucket race”, followed by a “sack race” and “egg and spoon race”, which made use of raw eggs.

After the races, each team member had to scuttle through a hula hoop without dropping the hoop.

Once the first phase of the games was concluded, the second phase started with a water balloon toss, three legged race, a treasure hunt and the best was indeed kept for last - the sweet bobbing.

Students had to collect a sweet from a bucket of water and find another sweet in a bucket filled with cake flour.

The three legged race was no match for the Boston girls.

Nevil’s Auto off to a dream start WEEKLY REPORTER NEVIL’S Auto got off to a dream start in the Trophies Engravers-sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association League opener after trouncing overwhelming favourites R and B Gledhow (23-13) at the Taste of India Restaurant on Wednesday night.

Nevil’s Auto won the opening frame (5-1) and doubled their advantage (10-2) after winning the 2nd frame by the same margin.

Gledhow reduced the deficit (6-12) after winning the 3rd frame (4-2).

Gledhow stayed in contention for honours after sharing the spoils in a 3-3 stalemate in the 4th frame.

But, Nevil’s Auto slammed the door on the faces of their opponents after hammering them (5-1) in the penultimate frame.

With the fate of their rivals sealed, Nevil’s Auto stepped off the accelerator in the final frame, holding on to a 3-3 draw to notch up an impressive 23-13 win.

Sanjay Singh and Shaun Pillay were the toast of the Nevil’s Auto outfit winning five games each from six matches.

Dino Moodley, playing at four, grabbed a comfortable 11-6 win against Jonathan Hein in the opening set. But, once Hein found his rhythm midway into the 2nd set, he grabbed a nail-biting 11-9 win to level the scores at 1-1.

Moodley stormed back into contention winning the next two sets (11-8; 11-4) to give the home team an early 3-1 lead.

Morgan Lynch and Shane Govindasamy were locked in a fierce 5-setter humdinger. Govindasamy lost the 1st set (9-11), but came back strong after winning the 2nd set (11-5).

Lynch forged ahead (2-1) with a nail-biting 11-9 win in the 3rd set.

Moodley earns double green number >> Proud Melody Ndlovu completes 10th Comrades run

IPPY Moodley of KwaDukuza Athletic Club (KDAC) was over the moon after finishing his 20th Comrades Marathon in Durban on Sunday to earn that elusive double green number.

In an interview with Moodley immediately after the race, the 60-yearold athlete said: “Having started the

hopeofgettingtothefinishlinewithinthe 12-hour mark.

“When I ran down the last descent at 45th Cutting I knew that I would bag yet another bronze Comrades medal and more significantly earn that green number.”

She crossed the finish line at the Sahara Kingsmead Stadium in Durban in a time of 11:45.

Phakamani Johnson Ngema of KDAC was elated after finishing the Comrades Marathon in a respectable time of 8:51 to earn a commemorative Bill Rowan medal.

Other KDAC athletes to finish the 89th Comrades Marathon were Danny Sewmungal (10: 41), Jaibalan Soobramoney (11:25), Thualni Cele (11:54), Yathin Narothum (11:55), Pradeev Dhora (11:56) and Aslam Amra (11:57).

Meanwhile, Bongamusa Mthembu of Pietermaritzburg claimed his maiden Comrades Marathon title after clinching the 2014 title in a time of 5:28, finishing four minutes ahead of 2012 champion Ludwick Mamabolo with Gift Kelehe (brother of 2001 winner Andrew) finishing 3rd ensuring a one-two-three finish for South African athletes.

In the women’s category, Eleanor Greenwood broke the stranglehold of the Nurgalieva twins to claim her first Com-

Meanwhile, Sunday’s race was a proud moment for KDAC female athlete, Melody Ndlovu who completed her 10th Comrades Marathon to earn a green number.

Ndlovu said: “The first half of the race took its toll on me and I didn’t think that I would finish the race.

“The unforgiving Pinetown descentsleftalargenumberofusresorting to walking down those hills in the

rades title in a time of 6:18. The Russian twins, Elena and Olesya Nurgalieva had to settle for 2nd and 3rd respectively.
