ARBARIC hooliganism and outright disregard for the law is the only way we can describe the festive season at Blythedale Beach.” These were the sentiments echoed by Blythedale residents who claim they were traumatised by the behaviour of patrons of the Blythedale Beach Festival.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, who also lives in the area, said he was a victim of the “ongoing party” as well.

“I was also not able to sleep at my home because of the noise. Unfortunately the beach is a public place and what is more unfortunate is that the car park is so close to the homes. We will be discussing how to solve this problem as soon as possible.”

Concerns over KZN pass rate >> Education minister asks why province has 7,7% fewer successful matric pupils AMANDA KHOZA

ASIC Education Minister Angie Motshekga has announced an investigation into the factors that contributed to KwaZulu-Natal’s 7,7 percentage points decrease in the matric pass rate achieved by the 2014 class.

The minister announced the 2014 National Senior Certificate exam results last night, saying the national passratehaddropped2,4percentage points.

This year’s pass rate is 75,8%, versus the 2013 pass rate of 78,2%.

In December she announced that the pass mark for Grade 12 would be

increased as part of the department’s efforts to increase the quality of education.

KZN, which had the largest number of pupils writing last year’s matric exams, recorded the steepest decline, achieving a 69,7% pass rate, down from 2013’s 77,4%.

“KZN dropped by 7,7 percentage points. It is the steepest decline of all the provinces. KZN has the largest number of Grade 12 pupils in the 2014 NSC examinations.

“We need to look seriously into the factors affecting KZN’s performance,” said Motshekga.

Local experts said there are several factors contributing to KZN’s per-

Education expert Professor Labby Ramrathan said, “Because KZN has the highest number of matrics that wrote the exams, any fluctuation will be evident.

“There are several factors that may have contributed to the decline, soIdon’tthinkitisfairfortheminister to assume that there is a problem,” said Ramrathan.

University of South Africa’s Professor Vuyisile Msila disagreed, saying the minister had every reason to be concerned.

“It is clear that there are problems in KZN; it is either the quality of teachers or school management.

“We should also remember that KZN and the Eastern Cape are very unique in that there are large numbers of rural schools,” said Msila.

Professor Wayne Hugo, who

teaches at the School of Education and Development at UKZN, agreed with Msila.

“The Eastern Cape has a lot more ruralschoolsandlessgoodschools.In KZN we have lots of rural schools, lots of peri-urban schools and a high number of urban areas.

“Whattheydidwiththemarkswas to drop the marks of the pupils who did really well and increase the marks of the poorer performing pupils. That iswhythereisasignificantdropinthe results,” he said.

Hugo questioned why, despite havingadysfunctionaleducationsystem, provinces like the Eastern Cape saw an increase in their pass rates.

Gauteng was named the best performing province with a 84,7% pass rate. The worst performing province was the Eastern Cape, where 65,4% passed.

The minister said there had been increases in the number of distinctions achieved in some subjects.

“History increased from 3,3% to 4,1%, Mathematical Literacy increased from 1,8% to 2,4% and Physical Science increased by 0,3% to 3,3%,” said Motshekga.

Gauteng contributed the highest number of candidates qualifying for bachelor’s degree studies with 36 843, followed by KZN with 35 724 and Western Cape with 18 524.

The number of bachelor’s passes from Limpopo was also notable at 16 325, said Motshekga.

She also announced that of the 39 centres in KwaZulu-Natal implicated in the cheating scandal, 11 had been cleared of any irregular activity.

She said the remaining 28 centres would be further investigated this month.

ITH the continued decrease in water levels at Hazelmere Dam and other water sources in the iLembe District, authorities are forced to commence with stage four water restrictions.

However, a desalination plant and a massive cash injection are on the cards to relieve the dry spell in the long term.

After the failure of the first three stages of water restrictions to reduce water demand on treatment plants in the iLembe District, Sembcorp Siza Water has announced the implementation of stage four restrictions.

This means that Sembcorp Siza Water will impose water cuts from 9pm to 4am and has banned the washing of cars with hosepipes, the washing of buildings and other structures and the use of jacuzzis.

These restrictions come as the water level at Hazelmere Dam continued to decrease during the festive season to 37% as of 6 January from the 40% that prompted more restrictions late last year.

The committee, consisting of iLembe District Municipality, Umgeni Water and Sembcorp Siza Water, will meet in February to put forward two master plans aimed at mitigating the water shortage.

One of the master plans will

be the looking into the feasibility of constructing a sea-water desalination plant north of Durban and a cash injection from cabinet of R70 million.

According to Umgeni Water corporate stakeholder manager ShamiHarichunderthefeasibility of a desalination plant is still being studied.

Meanwhile, he mentioned other long term plans aimed at mitigating the water shortage crisis.

He mentioned the ongoing construction of the R2 billion Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme which he promises will end the water shortage crisis in the near future.

“The completion of this scheme will mean, in effect, that much, if not all, of the water shortages that are currently being experienced in parts of the iLembe District will cease to exist,” said Harichunder in a statement.

The construction is due to be completed in March 2016.

According to Harichunder, the current lack of rain is the result of the El Nino weather system and weather experts predict the return of sufficient rain in February and March.

In the short term, all benchmarks for the reduction of demand having failed, it remains to be seen whether the latest stage of water restrictions will bring any respite to the water shortage,shouldtherainsnotbe sufficient.

Is it really worth it?

HEN I was in matric, the thought of cheating during the exams didn’t even cross my mind.

Firstly, I was too much of a nervous wreck to cheat and I knew that should I get caught, I would get a serious whipping from my mother.

I also knew that I would be subjected to endless family meetings and counselling.

Not only would it be recorded in the Department of Education’s history books, but my mother would make sure that it was in my obituary and on my tombstone too, and I definitely didn’t want that.

A friend of mine cheated in his matric trial exam.

Even though I don’t promote cheating, I must say the modus operandi was pretty impressive. During a technical drawing trial exam, my friend and a mate sitting in from of him literally switched boards the minute the invigilator turned his back on them.

They didn’t get caught. On top of that, they both got 80% for the exam.

Wait, I have my own cheating story to share.

I cheated in a class test in primary school.IwasinGrade3atRichardsBay Christian School. I know, the irony.

ing of that lump in your throat as you’re ushered to the principal’s office is not a good feeling.

When the matric cheating scandal broke last week, I thought to myself, is it really worth it?

I didn’t do well in all of my matric subjects, but I was satisfied with my results because I had put in the hard work. During the late nights and the weekends at the municipal library, we made sure that we put in extra work because the thought of not seeing your name in the newspaper was just depressing.

When the results finally came out and I saw my name in the newspaper, I was chuffed with myself. I was proud when I received my matric certificate because I knew that I had worked hard and I deserved the results I received.

When I heard that 39 exam centres in KwaZulu-Natal have been implicated in a cheating scandal, I thought of young people’s futures gone to waste.

KZN Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi made it clear that the department does not take kindly to cheaters. He told the media that pupils have been foundcheatinginthepastand that the sanctions were harsh. They have included a suspension from writing a matric exam for a period of

one to five years.

Teachers don’t earn much, so why would you risk putting bread on the table to ruin a child’s future?

I ask myself how these children will cope at university, having been acceptedintotheinstitutionswithfauxmarks.

Mahlambi made an interesting point when he said that children will always be children.

He said pupils are so honest that they will tell you that “the teacher gave them the answers or that their parents came home with the paper”.

I was absolutely gobsmacked about the fact that parents can come home with a matric exam answer script and make their child memorise the answers.

As a parent, what are you teaching your child?

Thatcheatingisright?Thattheycan take short cuts to get further in life?

Having cheated and learnt my lesson, I hope these children will repent and refrain from cheating in future. It would be a sad indictment on society if some of these children get ahead in life through cheating.

Perhaps the department should go backtothebasics.Ibelievethatifteachers had equipped the pupils adequately and made sure that they went into the exam with confidence that they would do well, then there wouldn’t be a need to cheat.

But then again, I believe there are so many cracks in our education system that the cheating scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.

EDITORIAL COMMENT Matric results and the new year IT’S the time of the year when resolutions and matrics take precedence.

Right now, the focus is on KwaZulu-Natal’s dismal results with the ministerofbasiceducationannouncinganinvestigationintothe7.7percent decrease in the pass rate (see page 4 for full story).

A lot of comments have also been made regarding the role parents play in the lives of matric pupils. Basically, a lot of fingers are pointing in different directions.

Despite the negative stories that have emerged regarding the class of 2014, and this includes the ‘cheaters’, those matric pupils who are ready to enter the next phase of their life must be congratulated.

Many pupils overcame their circumstances and did the best they could and proved that hard work pays off.

The Weekly would like to congratulate all matric pupils who are now ready to take the next step in life.

The first month of the year is filled with a tons of positivity and goals set for the year ahead.

AccordingtoHollywood(referringto1980s movie Back to the Future), 2015 marks the year we travel around in flying cars.

While this is far from the reality, many are waiting to see some positive change in their communities.

This year marks a milestone for Stanger Weekly and we look forward to sharing some special moments with you - watch this space for more!

IT’S a definition dilemma and a burning

question among car enthusiasts — when does a car become a classic? Agreeing on an impalpable point in time that constitutes a “Classic Car” definition is rather challenging.

Vehicle first­ aid kit essentials DRIVERS should always do their best to be prepared to respond to any emergency. Even though you may not be trained medical professionals there are often small bits of assistance one can provide with first-aid and an effective and fast response to smaller emergencies.

A first­aid kit should be something that is durable, preferably a bright colour so it can be easily identified, and water resistant.

Items to treat burn wounds, cuts, bruises, splint a fracture, band aids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for insect bites and stings as well as disinfectant.

If you prefer to keep medicine in your first-aid kit — headache tablets, antinausea and vomiting.

It is important that only a responsible adult make use of these medications and that no prescription medications are kept in the first-aid kit.

Also do not administer your prescription medication to someone else, even if you use the same medica-

What would be the most important essentials to carry in a mini-kit.

Bandages, band aids and anti-septic solution. Sunblock would also be a good item to keep in your first-aid kit as well as after-sun lotion. The content of your first-aid kit largely depend on where you will be travelling to and what is most likely to happen. If you are a regular outdoorsman you would know what happened before and what you needed.

What are the most common mistakes amateurs tend to make when trying to perform first aid?

Be smart and keep the right things in your first-aid kit. The most important things are a CPR mouthpiece shouldyouneedtoperformCPR,something to stop bleeding and splint fractures.

This includes band aids, bandages, dressings, strapping, gauze etc.

Probably the most important of all is medical gloves. Protect yourself before you try and help others. This should be in every first-aid kit, regardless if you intend to use it on your family or not.

Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat first. They were on the back-foot right from the start after losing Sagar Arora (4), Arhad Singh (5) and Keane Govender (2) cheaply.

Their woes continued after Sourav Singh was clean bowled for 11 runs leaving them in tatters at 39/4.

Veteran campaigner Nikilesh MisrajoinedforceswithdebutanteVarun Pal to steady the innings, putting on a 27-runs partnership for the fifth wicket before Pal was dismissed for 12 runs.

Mohamed Shehzaad joined Misra at the crease and they took the tally to 98/6 before Shehzaad (24) was stumpedbythePhoenixwicket-keeper off the bowling of M. Naidoo.

WADUKUZA Local Football Association (KLFA) have announced major plans for the new year in the hope of developing the skills of players, administrators and club owners.

KLFA competitions co-ordinator Magnum Mngadi said: “Before the end of January we plan to host an administrator’s workshop to develop the administrative skills of the management members of all clubs.

“In a fortnight’s time KLFA will host a referee’s workshop and it will be compulsory for each club to send three referees to the workshop.”

Attheendoftheworkshopareferees data base will be formed and referees will be appointed to officiate the KLFA premier league, division one and women’s league games.

A coaches’ workshop is on the cards for the month of February.

“Coaches involved in junior and senior teams and women’s soccer will be invited to attend the coaching workshop,” added Mngadi.

Naicker is no stranger at international karting tracks as well. He has already participated at international karting events and leaves to Verona, Italy on 14 October to compete in the World Rok Karting Finals.

More than 30 countries participate in the event, considered to be the pinnacle drive of a kart competitor’s career.

Naicker also grew up in a motorsport-enthused home. His dad is wellknown in the drag racing fraternity, andisathreetimedragracingchampion in South Africa.

Naicker’s parents - Logan and LouLou - are proud of their son’s achievements and they hope to see him excel at all levels of motorsport in the near future.

Logan says that he has invested heavily in his son because he has shown the potential to compete internationally.

The St Dunstan’s College pupil displayed his talent when he finished in thetoppositionsinalmostallofhisraces during the 2014 season. He left the 2014 penultimate race with a 12 point lead, which placed him in a favourable position to scoop the championship.

During the final event in Vereeniging, Naicker drove to second place finishes during the first two heats of the day, and karted his way to first place - and the championship title - in the final race of the day.

The ecstatic teenager leaped for joy as he stepped out of his kart in Vereeniging and was greeted with hugs and handshakes from his team mates and family.

“I’ve always dreamt of winning a karting championship and I’ve worked hard to become a focussed competitor,” says Naicker.

“I’m hoping to carry over this success internationally and, hopefully, I mightbescoutedasaFormula1,DTM or Nascar driver someday,” he adds.

Naicker, who started competing in pro-karting at the age of 10, quickly honed his skills whilst competing against far more seasoned competitors in his class.

Naicker says that he was persuaded to take up karting by master BMW engineer Sean Sing, owner at TUNETECH,anditdidn’ttakemuchconvincing to get him behind the wheel of Kashen shows his skill.
