N 11th hour deal saved South African mining tycoon Mzi Khumalo’s two multimillion rand properties in the luxury Zimbali Golf Estate outside Ballito from going under auction, yesterday morning.

The plots were expected to be auctioned at the instruction of First Rand Bank at the office of the Sheriff in Stanger, KwaDukuza Municipality at 10am.

But with less than an hour be-

fore the properties with a combined value of R15.9-million went under the hammer, the auction was called off.

Acting for FRB, Alan Jacobs of Mendelow-Jacobs Attorneys said an arrangement was made within an hour before the auction took place adding that this “is not unusual”.

He said Khumalo owed the bank approximately R14-million and not the R17-million as has been suggested in media reports.

He said the details of the agreement are “confidential” but added that all parties accepted the terms.

Pillay praises ANC delivery MERVYN KRISHNA

“PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma's leadership has led to improved service delivery.”

This is according to ANC provincial ex­ ecutive committee member and Kwa­ Zulu­Natal MEC for human settle­ ment, Ravi Pillay, who was the guest of honour at an ANC gala dinner on Thursday night.

The event, held at the Sibusiso Hall in Sundumbili, was aimed at uniting members of the ANC and supporters from the community and to raise funds for the organisation.

The dinner, which was attended by prominentANCmembersandbusiness people, raised in excess of R200 000 which will go towards building the par­ ty’s presence in the area preceding the 2014 general elections.

Speaking at the dinner, Pillay said president Zuma had bettered the gov­ ernment's delivery successes since 1994.

The building of a South Africa based on strong and positive princi­ ples and value featured strongly in Pil­ lay's speech.

“The social ills, such as drug and alcohol abuse, the murder and rape of the elderly and teenagers, and teen­ age pregnancies are a manifestation of the wounds on the psyche of black people in particular that still needs to be healed,” said Pillay.

Early in his address, he called on the community to take a moment to send their thoughts and prayers to ail­ ing former president Nelson Mandela during this difficult time.

School wins court battle JYOTHI LALDAS A DISPUTE between a local secondary school and security service provider was dismissed with costs in favour of the school at the Durban High Court last week.

This came after Eagle Eye Protection Services filed an interdict to stop Stanger Manor Secondary School from terminat­ ing its services in June this year.

The school filed responding legal documents through Narrine Perumal and Company and defended the case.

The school claimed that Eagle Eye did not fulfil the requirements of the contract and therefore its services were terminated.

The school also claimed that Eagle Eye did not have specific equipment on certain occasions and they did not have a proper monitoring system in place.

Eagle Eye believed their three year

contract was terminated without valid reasoning,claiming the company did have a monitoring system in place as well as a control room and that they were being treated unfairly.

Eagle Eye took the school to court in the hope that they would either be rein­ stated as the security service provider or paid out the value of the three year con­ tract , which amounted to more than R500 000 in addition to legal fees.

However, the case was dismissed with costs after the court found that Eagle Eye misrepresented itself in tender

“They held two victims up with a firearm and knives and tied up the man with an electric cord.

“They ransacked the house and dragged the female victim to a toilet where they allegedly raped her.

“They took valuables and R600 in cash before they fled the scene.”

SELF-employed and selftaught carpenter from Groutville, Siphesihle Gumede, owner of Superior Kitchens, was named entrepreneur of the year in Illembe’s “The Entrepreneur” competition and walked away with R25 000 for his efforts.

The grand finale show took place at the Umhlali Country Club on Wednesday evening, attracting more than 100 guests, including some of last year’s competition winners, sponsors, local business owners and chamber business mentors.

Gumede was followed by Chantelle Sharples of Etiquette, a small business providing waiter training and quality staff for the catering and hospitality sector.

She won R20 000 in prize

money and free advertising.

Innocent Zulu, owner of Phindomunye Construction came fourth and won R 12 000. Megan Allen from Brides and Ball Gowns was fifth, winning R 5000.

Craig Heafield of Omni Sense won the award for most innovative business. He received R 10 000 for his effort.

The eldest of four children, Gumede says he learned everything about the trade from his uncle Bheki.

When Bhekani passed away in 2008, Siphesihle took over the reins of the operation and says he has not looked back.

Today he employs five people on a part time basis and has one other full time employee in addition to

himself.

Announcing the winner, judge Jane Wiltshire said: “Many things impressed us about Siphesihle – his youth and the fact that this enterprise creates jobs.

“More importantly though is his clear identification of an under-serviced niche of black, middle income home owners in Groutville and his absolute commitment to quality.” iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe said the quality of the presentations and the business plans were “absolutely outstanding”, which was a tribute to months of hard work by contestants and their mentors.

Mayor calls on residents to honour the elderly MERVYN KRISHNA KWADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembu has urged the residents of KwaDukuza to observe National Older Persons Week by celebrating the contribution of senior citizens in their communities even after it ends.

National Older Persons Week was officially launched by president Jacob Zuma on Sunday, 29 September

Public Protector to probe

UBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela has been asked to probe claims of mismanagement in some KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, including Mandeni.

Other municipalities include eThekwini, Umkhanyakude and Zululand.

According to information supplied to the Public Protector's office in 2009, Mandeni Municipality did not renew the contract of Globe Tech Security Company and instead brought

in Enforce Security Company.

According to a reliable source, what made that move suspicious was that, whereas Globe Tech Security Company was paid R60 000 per month, Enforce Security Company’s payment was about four times more, approximately R260 000 per month.

This despite the allegations that the new company does not have enough necessary resources to execute its mandate.

This security company is alleged to be the same company which was

awarded a contract by eThekwini Municipality.

In a statement, the Public Protector's office said these are serious allegations.

“We do not know if they are true or not, and we do not in any way wish to apportion blame to anyone.

“But if they are true, they are a serious indictment, not only against the political leadership of all the cited municipalities, but also against the relevant MEC.” Inkatha Freedom Party deputy national spokesperson, Joshua Mazibu-

A STRIKE by Dynamic Fibre Moulding (DFM) employees that stretched for almost five weeks has ended with a three year wage increase agreement.

The agreement states that workers will receive a 10.9% wage increase during the first year and 9.2% in the second and third years.

National Union of Minework­ ers South Africa (NUMSA) or­ ganiser, Gordon Sithole said he was content with the agreement.

DFM chief executive officer Godfrey Sabido said he was happy that the employees were back at work.

“Wehaveagreedtoprotectand preserve jobs. Everything is back to nor­mal.”

The company, based in Isithe­ be, has been operating for 20 years and employs about 260 people, of whom 173 were on strike.

“We can’t allocate houses without proper sanitation. There is a big need for these houses in this ward .

“That is the reason the municipality is speeding up the process.”

Nxumalo said that issue had been par­ tially solved as the land owners were hav­ ing discussions with the municipality.

Where do politicians get off?

AST week I heard one of the most preposterous stories on 5fm. On my way to work the SABC run station ran a lead story about transport minister Dipou Peters saying that only a “few” people are against the implementation of e-tolls in Gauteng, with the majority in favour of having “world class roads”.

President Jacob Zuma recently signed into law the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, which paves the

way for the implementation of etolling.

Now this is not the first time a government official has said something so outrageously nonfactual and blatantly ignorant.

This happens all the time with politicians. The spin. That's what its called in the ever back stabbing world of politics. Take something super ridiculous and make it seem a little bit okay. A run of the mill event if you will.

But the reality of how we live as South Africans on a day to day basis paints quite a despondent picture.

Despite what we are told by economists, there is a lot of money in this country. We are often referred to as the United States of Africa. And this is a fairly accurate comparison.

Our country has billions of rands at its disposal that is being squandered by local, provincial and national politicians.

Many of the comments you read in this very paper as well as the broadsheets is merely what reporters can tell you.

We have to give you factual information. But the truth is, there are many shoddy deals both here in the iLembe District as well as the rest of the country, which are always benefitting politicians.

The E-tolling matter for example. This comes despite the fact that there is a fuel levy that has been implemented by government.

Where are the civic associations? Where are the councillors who are meant to be implementing or “working together” to help these small communities?

This is where it all starts. Now of course I'm not saying that all your local politicians are involved in shoddy dealings.

But my friends, trust me, some of them are.

And wow,they make a lot more

money than you or I. I like to call it the comfort marker. Over R25 000 per month.

How has KwaDukuza, for example, improved since 2011?

To me it looks shockingly the same,andI visit all townships and suburbs on a daily basis.

You, the so-called community, are letting yourselves down.

You are never at public meetings.

There are ahandful of familiar faces that are making key decisions and leaving “the general” comments with the newspaper.

Is this the society you want your children and great grandchildren to live in? Live up to the legacy of stalwarts like Billy Nair.

Don't just name drop or enjoy your armchair critic status.

Go out to these meetings and make a difference.

Hold your public officials to account. If you don't, stop complaining.

Light up my life, please I LIVE in Sandra Road, Ballito and for the last four months the street lights have not been working.

I called the KwaDukuza Call Centre on numerous occasions reporting this matter but nothing has been done.

I go home well after dark. We are living in dangerous times where it is imperative to have adequate lighting for some semblance of safety.

I cannot understand why as ratepayers we have a mammoth task of begging for our voice to be heard by our municipality, yet Ballito is the highest rate paying area in the KwaDukuza Municipality.

Twitter hacking?

BEING on different social networks can be exciting when you're meeting new people and making new friends, but what happens when a social networking hacker comes along?

PRIYA NUNKUMAR Facebook YOUNG, WISE, FREE hacking is the most common I believe, however recently I've noticed that Twitter has its own share of hacking going on.

The most common type of hacking I've noticed on Twitter is when a “hacked” account sends you a private message that contains a link. When you click the link, it opens a fake Twitter log in, which requires a username and password.

Once your details are entered, the hacker has all the information they need to basically steal your account. I I haven't ever seen a hacker actually tweet anything, however the irritation factor is high when all of your followers get emails directing them to some random site for weight loss and such.

The most well-known hacking message that I have seen is a Direct Message (DM), that says “See what this person is saying about you”, followed by a link.

Having any social network account hacked can be very dangerous for you, because all your personal information can be seen and your location can be found in status updates and location tagging.

So how do we as teenagers protect ourselves from these predators who are just waiting for us to make the first move?

We should try not to add locations on social networks which state our home addresses. Also, try to keep your personal information on social networks limited. As much as we would like to share information freely, it may save us later on.

It's very unfortunate that we have to limit our freedom to say what we would like on social networks and let people know that we are enjoying our lives.

However, to protect ourselves from bored people, there is a line we need to draw. Make sure you are always social network wise!

Child prodigy super Saiyan C

HILD prodigies are defined as children who possess un­ usual talents showing great mastery of a certain subject, art or skill.

They are usually children no older than 11 who show extreme proficiency in certain adult­relat­ ed fields. Today, scientists are still studying this mystery and trying to determine whether prodigies are a product of genetics or up­ bringing.

With KwaDukuza born Saiyan Naidoo its definitely a combina­ tion of both. Saiyan is a nine­year­ old who plays lead guitar for the popular Tyles band.

Saiyan blew the audience away when he performed at the Battle of the Bands contest at Sibaya in August this year.

Saiyan was seen strumming thetunesofDireStraits,DeepPur­ ple, Santana and the Eagles, like a seasoned professional.

His rendition of Jonathan But­ ler’s 7th Avenue, led one seasoned musician to comment that the next best thing to what he heard, was indeed the original.

Saiyan has been playing guitar from the tender age of four. His mentor is his grandfather Sydney Naidoo, who was the drummer for the original Tyles band, and the bandleaderforthebandasitisto­ day. Sydney was quick to realise Saiyans keen ear for music. De­ spite no formal music training and being unable to read or write mu­ sic, Saiyan was able to pick up in­ tricate pieces merely by listening.

At age five Saiyan performed before legendary American jazz musician, and three time Grammy nominee Ronny Jordan.

In the same year, Saiyan releases hisfirstCD,makinghimoneofSA’s youngest recorded artists. In 2011, Saiyan outdid 800 other hopefuls to win a talent contest at Ushaka Marine World.

However, his performance at the Battle of the Bands Show in Sibaya, is what propelled Saiyan firmly into the limelight.

Sagren Moodley of Box­Office Promotions, who now manage Saiyan's career, believes that he is animmensetalentandisdestined for greatness on the world stage.

Moodley says that Saiyan is only now learning to read music and play the piano.

“It is all part of developing Saiyan as a musician and the up­ comingBattleoftheBandstourof KZN is all part of the strategy to expose Saiyan to the world.”

NE of KwaDukuza's most well liked principals, Visvanathan Govender was given a fitting farewell recently at Parukubad Primary School in Glendale, hosted by staff and well-wishers.

Govender, better known to his colleaguesandthecommunityatlargeas Vis, put down his pen when he retired on Monday, 30 September after 42 years in the teaching fraternity.

Govender, who served the school for 32 years, was at the helm of Parakubad for 17 years - making him the longest serving principal to date.

Originally from Esenembe, Govender who later moved with his parents to Sigeni, said he always wanted to be a teacher.

Govender matriculated at the Stanger Indian High School, now known as Stanger Secondary School.

The hosts were in deep trouble right from the start after notching up just a single point from the opening four team competitions.

They quickly made amends for their pathetic performance at the start after Preston Moothusamy and Dave Govender beat the more fancied duo of Sanjay Singh and Pragasen Naidoo in the first doubles match of the evening to reduce the deficit to a solitary point (2-3).

LEMBE Cricket Union snatched a thrilling 3-wickets victory against Phoenix in a KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Opener Brandon Chetty was sent for an early shower after being clean bowled by Mohamed Mhlongo for a duck in the 5th delivery of the match.

Despite the early setback, Claude Govender and Dino Ramduss took the game to the Ilembe bowlers, surviving a fiery onslaught by Mhlongo and Dillon Rautenbach.

They took the tally from 2/1 to 80/2 before Govender was clean bowled by Rautenbach for 24 runs in the 17th over.

Aaron Pillay ripped through the Phoenix top-order dismissing Matthew Naidoo (3), Shomal Dayanand (3) and Prinesh Singh (5) to leave the visitors in deep trouble at 109/5 in the 28th over.

Despite the wickets falling around him, Ramduss held his nerve, joining forces with Shaveer Chetty to take the tally to 140/6 before Chetty (16) was caught and bowled by Preshen Rampersad.

Mhlongo claimed his 2nd victim after dismissing Chris Govender (5). Alveiro Nadasen showed no mercy for the fragile tail-enders, Soma Govender (5) and Shaun Khayile (1) before grabbing the prized-wicket of Ramduss.

Ramduss scored a superb 87-runs which included 12 fours and two huge sixes before being caught in the covers by Mhlongo off the bowling of Nadasen.

KWADUKUZA Primary School secured a place in the semi-final of the Shivendra Velan Memorial sixes cricket tournament after beating the Manor Primary ‘B’ outfit by 4-wickets in the quarter-final played on Friday at the Manor Ground.

The Manor Primary ‘A’ outfit booked their placed in the semi’s after trouncing Stanger Heights by 5-wickets, however, with the late withdrawal of Gledhow Primary from the tournament, the Manor ‘B’ (coming in as replacements) had an opportunity to pit their skill against KwaDukuza Primary.

Spinner Mitha restricted the flow of runs, conceding just two runs from

his over to keep the home team in the hunt for honours.

But, man-of-the-match Rivaldo (15n.o.) and Mayuren Logenathan (19n.o.) guided KwaDukuza to a comfortable 4-wickets victory in the penultimate over.

Tomorrow (Thursday), Harry Bodasing and Lee Primary will contest the last quarter-final match. The winner will do battle with Manor Primary ‘A’ in the first semi-final scheduled for October 16. In the 2nd semi-final, Dawnview will lock horns with KwaDukuza Primary.

WADUKUZA Municipality excelled in the Kwanaloga Games (hosted by the iLembe District Municipality), scooping the lion’s share of gold medals at the awards ceremony held at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

The four local municipalities (KwaDukuza, Ndwedwe, MaphumuloandMandeni)undertheaegisofthe iLembe District Municipality assembledattheCountryClubGroundComplex to participate in the different codes of sport in preparation for the SALGA (South African Local GovernmentAssociation)Gamestobeheldin Kokstad in December.

The KwaDukuza women did the municipality proud after trouncing arch-rivals Mandeni (3-0) in the final played before a huge crowd at the Recreation Ground.

KwaDukuza led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a brilliantly executed freekick by Francesca Khumalo in the first half.

Ndwedwe emerged runners-up in tennis ahead of Mandeni.

In basketball the KwaDukuza men had to settle for the runners-up spot behind champions Maphumulo, but the KwaDukuza girls were crowned champions after trouncing Mandeni in the final.

KwaDukuza proved their prowess on the dance floor, swinging their way to victory ahead of runners-up Mandeni.

The KwaDukuza cricket lads went down by 12-runs to Mandeni in the final.
