Drug dealers taken down >> Cluster commander, officers crack down on drug dealers
Alleged drug dealers are searched during operation Take Down; the men were arrested and have been charged.

ORE than 200 straws of “sugars” and an undisclosed amount of cash were recovered when KwaDukuza cluster police arrested four alleged drug dealers on Thursday. Nelson Mthembu, Siyabonga Mthethwa, Freedom Sithole and Sembi Ntuli are believed to be part of an alleged drug syndicate operating in the greater KwaDukuza area. They were arrested during a “drug deal” with undercover cluster officers on Thursday last week opposite the Stanger Secondary School. Operation “Take Down” was led by KwaDukuza cluster commander, Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer, in partnership with the National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Local Criminal Records Centre (LCRC). Captain-Hastibeer said they had set up observations in preparation for the bust. “The undercover agents were buying drugs from the suspects for some

He said there are 10 stations that fall under his command and that all will be performing sting operations

UDF commemorated >> United Democratic Front’s strength was community MERVYN KRISHNA
T
HE United Democratic Front celebrated its 30th anniversary in KwaDukuza on Friday. Among the speakers were ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikhalala and Paul David, who was a former UDF leader in KwaDukuza. In his keynote address, Zikhalala said: “All those who participated in the formation of the UDF had a shared vision; that of defeating the apartheid system and creating a state built on values and principles of democracy based on the will of the people.” David then shared his memories with the crowd. “There are many people who, like me, were activists in the UDF in the 1980s, but stepped aside when the ANC was unbanned,” he said. “Many of us have now raised children and made our mark in different spheresofsociety.Manyarealsolooking for ways to make a contribution to society, but not in a party political manner. I was a young political activist and a law student when the UDF

mede, Oscar Mpetha, Samson Ndou and George Sewpershad, along with younger activists like Aubrey Mokoena and reverend Frank Chikane. “The biggest cheer was reserved for reverend Allan Boesak who had mooted the idea of a united front against apartheid when he spoke at the Transvaal Anti-SAIC (South Afri-
canIndianCouncil)committeeinJanuary 1983. “Boesak’s proposal led to a committee being formed to investigate the feasibility of such a structure and, in July 1983, the UDF was launched within three weeks. “The ANC and other political organisations were banned at the time
and the UDF signalled a new upsurge in internal protest against apartheid. “While the organisers of the UDF insisted that it was not a front for the ANC or any other organisation, it became clear very early on that the organisation would be a key ally to the organisations that were forced to operate from exile.” He said through its continual mass protests, it played a key role in forcing the nationalist government to the negotiating table with the ANC. “The UDF’s strength was its community structures, because it was formed out of community, youth, women, workers, religious, sport and other organisations. “It provided a solid training ground for many activists who ended up occupying senior positions within government after South Africa’s first democratic elections. “Of course, as soon as the ANC was unbanned and its leaders returned to South Africa, it disbanded the UDF. “I think about the many comrades who sacrificed their lives so that we can be free today and I tried to think of ways in which I can help to achieve the South Africa they were prepared to lay down their lives.”

PUPILS have resumed writing their trial exams and the annual national assessments (ANA) will go ahead, but the go-slow by South African Democratic Teacher’s Union (Sadtu) members will continue. This is according to Sadtu KwaDukuza branch secretary Nkanyiso Gumede. This was decided at a mass meeting on Monday afternoon at the

Identifying and overcoming learning blockages THE primary and high school years can be stressful for children - particularly those battling academically. These children often feel that there is something wrong with them and that they can’t be helped. However, recent research results have indicated a significant correlation between levels of academic achievement in children and the learning blockages that they experience. Research on the subject was initiated by Henk du Plessis, managing director of Edublox, a South African company that assists children andadultswithreadingandlearning. Whilst visiting a number of schools, du Plessis realised that many learners were finding it difficult to successfully make the transition from primary school to high school level. This was largely due to the fact that parents often help their children with school
work and studying in primary school but once they reach high school level the children are expected to take responsibility for their own school work and studies. “Fortunately for learners facing these learning blockages, this is something that can be successfully addressed through intervention,” says du Plessis. “Many learners mistakenly think that studying means revising material by reading through it repeatedly, but this is not the case. Study success and failure do not only depend on ability. An essential component is the extent to which learners are able to apply proper study methods and learning skills,” he explains. EdubloxReadingandLearning Clinics offer Studiblox, a course that includes brain training exercises, study methods, learning skills, writing essays and delivering speeches for learners from grades four to 12.
Since the final exams are around the corner, be proactive and book a seat for your child in Edubloxs’ next study method course which will take place on 25, 26 and 27 September. To book a seat call 032 586 3411.

Sabha Hall in KwaDukuza. “We want to clarify the misinformationthatthereisasettlementbetween the education department and the union regarding the mass action being called off. That is not true. “We need to remember all KZN branches were holding mass meetings on Monday and taking mandates. Bearing in mind the fact that 98 per cent of the demands have been met, the local branch is hopeful everything should be back to normal by Tuesday afternoon (yesterday).”
Sadtu members implemented “work to rule” action on Monday last week after the department failed to meet its demands. This left matric pupils throughout KwaDukuza in a state of panic after their examinations were stopped. However, examinations resumed on Monday with pupils writing their physical science papers which were initially scheduled for last week. Sadtu is demanding that education department head Nkosinathi Sishi be suspended and that a perfor-
mance evaluation be done on his work. They also want to be refunded money docked from the salaries of teachers who participated in a strike in 2011. The union met education MEC Senzo Mchunu who apparently has put R316 million “on the table” to address more than 80% of the backlog Sadtu claims is owed to its members. The union “appreciated” that a task team had been set up to deal with processes that did not involve money.

ECEIVING a call from her school at about 8:30am while she was still in bed was ‘shocking’ and a ‘nightmare’ for a KwaDukuza girl who is rewriting her matric exams with the hope of pursuing a career in nursing next year. The young girl, speaking on condition of anonymity, was called in by her former school at the eleventh hour to write the national life orientation (LO) paper on Wednesday last week. “I was told it would be a general knowledge exam , but looking at the paper I felt I needed time to study. “Even if I was told the night before about the exam I am sure it would have been a little better.” When she asked her principal for an explanation, he said he was told by the department at about 6:30am that
management of the LO paper at the schoolandtheprivatecandidates. This was because of the instabilities caused by the Sadtu strike.” He said the examination the pupils wrote would not drastically affect their marks because of the continuous assessment marks which the department already obtained from the previous year. Meanwhile, at Groutville Secondary School, 41 pupils did not write the national LO paper as they were not aware that they were writing on the day. KZN Department of Education spokesman, Muzi Mahlambi said the pupils were not supposed to write the paper if they wrote final exams last year. “The continuous assessment marks stay for three years. The common tests are meant for the current grade 12 [pupils].”
Planting trees JYOTHI LALDAS KWADUKUZA-based landfill, Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM), donated two trees to Lubisana Primary School in New Guelderland in the spirit of spring. The trees were officially handed over and planted at the school on Friday last week as part of Arbor Week celebrations. DCLM’s Sustainable Health Enterprises co-ordinator, Gcobisa Feke, gave the background to the donation. Feke spoke to the children about the importance of planting trees for both beautification and environmental conservation purpos-
es.
The co-ordinator also said that tree planting was vital to the efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change. Ward councillor, James Van Whye and Cheryl Wolhuter from ukuPhakamisa (the non-profit organisation fully supported by DCLM) were also part of the Arbor Week event. School principal Ms Mfeka expressed her appreciation to DCLM for their kind gesture, and pointed out that her small, impoverished school was often overlooked because of its location. The school has a total pupil population of 126, and offers tuition from grades R to six.

The nine-member team, including two teachers, was named the top school in the province on Saturday at the provincial finals attheProteaHotelon the South Coast. The school will now represent KZN at the national finals to be held in Mphumalanga on 28 November. The team is made up of Samir Sahadeo, Wonke Masuku, Sinothile Khuzwayo, Abbigail Coetzee, Prestin Padayachee and educators T Gopal and Ajay Sahadew. Each pupil was presented with a laptop, trophy and certificate. They will also be able to go for their driver’s licence when they become eligible and the bookings, tuitions and tests will be fully paid for by the department. Gopal said the team performed brilliantly. “They had to identify road safety problems surrounding our school and then find solutions to the problems. The pupils created a hi-tech model which they had present at the finals.” Speaking on behalf of the pupils, Khuawayo said they were excited about
bringing the provincial championship trophy to KwaDukuza. “I must thank our teachers,Gopal,Sahadew and principal, Chicks Budhram who gave us all thesupport and motivation to bring the prestigious award home.” Budhram was full of praise for his pupils and teachers. “They not only brought home the prestigious award, but held their heads high and gave a good account of themselves. Sipho Hlatshwayo, who witnessed the incident, was full of praise for Arjun. “That is what we want to see. I appreciate the good work by Arjun. I urge all stakeholders, including security companies to come on board and partner with the CPF to combat crime in KwaDukuza,” said Hlatshwayo.

Anniversary UDF talk I AM a Stanger Manor resident and keenly followpoliticalhappeningsinthetown, especially in my area. Last week I was taken aback by an article in a local paper accompanied by a photograph of a large group of people seated with Baboo Singh and Sduduzo Gumede and claiming to be the democratically elected task team to resurrect the Stanger ManorbranchoftheANC.Ishallpausehere
KAVEEL SINGH
Just sayin'
Electronic media - good or bad? I'VE recently been bombarded with questions of the value of electronic media and whether or not it is ushering our society into a new age, or dumbing down humanity as we know it. It makes for an interesting argument. On one hand, you have fascinating advances in the way we communicate with others around the world.
and return to this story. On Friday 6 September I attended the UDF anniversary talk and was privileged to hear UDF stalwart and ex-NIC executive member Paul David speak. It was a most enlightening talk that more people should have listened to. Whatfollowedhowever, wasarealeyeopener for me. The address by the provincial secretary of the ANC, Sihle Zikalala was both frank and forthright. Apart from touching on corruption, nepotism and gatekeeping, the thrust of the
We are no longer restricted to just the communities we live in. Our society has in just a few decades advanced its sphere of communication on a global level. Just the other day an Israeli woman, who works as a communications expert, made contact with me on Facebook and has thus far shared many great insights about her country – as have I (I'm saving the corruption discussions for later). Would this have been possible or as accessible 10 to 15 years ago? I don't think so. Yes we did have email, the internet and telephones, but did we really have the social awareness of other countries as we do now? Not really. However, this coin is painfully two-faced with other social ills stemming from electronic mass communication. When the internet first came about, many modern day philosophers and technological experts assumed this would free humanity from its many restrictive physical bonds. In many ways, it has. But, as we all know, the net’s greatest endeavour thus far has been the ‘porn’ industry. There has also been a decreased advent of
secretary’s speech was inclusivity and the ANC imperative to ensure that its communities and membership be constantly informed, consulted and engaged in its processes. It now seems to me that we have many ANCs. Back to the question of the Stanger Manor “task team”. There was no notice of intention to form such a task team and no consultation with the general membership of the ANC in Stanger Manor. Sduduzo’s appearance in the photograph makes one question the railroading
attention to vital issues around the world such as the American Russian stand-off in Syrian waters. Instead, we find more attention directed toward Kim Kardashian's fashion sense, or Lady Gaga's new album release. All great distractions of our time. We need to ask ourselves as humans...are we participating positively for the future of our race? How will our great great grandchildren label our contribution to the betterment of all? We have great resources at our disposal, yet we choose to squander our potential with menial distractions of attention seeking parasites. The solution is simple. Take all your electronic devices – your cellphone, iPads and computers and allow them to show you the real world mainstream mediaishidingfromyou.Tuneinto news websites and alerts and dominate conversations in a meaningful manner. Don't allow yourself to be dictated to by politicians and corporations. Arm yourself with knowledge that is out there and use it to uplift your society and world. SADTU - Go slow, poor show!
H
ENRY Adams aptly wrote: "Teachers affect eternity - they can never tell where or when their influence will end.'' With this in mind, I read with great interest about the recent SADTU strike but with even greater dismay about their disruption of the matric trial exams. Whilst teachers have the inalienable right to strike and whilst I agree with some of their legitimate grievances, itappearsthatthetimingofthestrikehasbeen preconceived and designed to coincide with the writing of the trial exams. If this is true, it is a shameful and despicable action that deserves the strongest condemnation. There is a very fine line between earning support and achieving contempt for one's cause. Sympathy can very quickly turn into disgust! This is especially true when one resorts to unlawful and unconstitutionalactssuchaspreventingprincipalsfrom collecting matric trial papers from the Education department's offices. Worse still is the anomaly that
those that are entrusted with the advancement of education of our children actually become obstacles and hinderances toward that noble objective. This is akin to the ordinary mob mentality whom in their quest for delivery of basic services resort to the burning and destroying of State infrastructure. Further, it is interesting to note that the ''work-torule'' (a non-sensical term in itself) strike action advocates a 7 hour work day. Is this not the norm already with all the other SADTU-led actions such as ''goslows'' and mass marches on school days? Is it not possible to conduct strikes and mass action on Friday afternoons or Saturdays? I have high regard for most teachers who are committedtotheirprofessionandwhodailyplayapivotal role in moulding and shaping young minds. It is their positive influence that Henry Adams was referring to, not the destructive, mindless actions of a few! Shain Manjoo
Pencil and eraser syndrome
PRIYA...
Young, wise, free AS teenagers we make quite a lot of mistakes which we try to cover up. Speaking from experience, I guess there are many times when I like to be carefree and forget to be responsible. Today's column was inspired by one of my column readers who emailed me and said that as teenagers we are young and do silly things because we are carefree. This is the thought which most teenagers have, but we don't realise that our parents can't always be there to take care of us. Some people are carefree
while others are just irresponsible, you're probably wondering what's the difference right? Being carefree is when you know your responsibilities and you fulfil them, but you choose to be calm about it, taking it in your stride and moving forward. Being irresponsible, on the other hand, is when you choose to forget your responsibilities completely. Maybe it's a fight you got into, or a bad relationship which people were talking about, it could even be having a house party which your parents didn't know about. What may seem small to us is, infact, quiteabigmattertoadults, mostly our parents! There are more serious mistakes which some teenagers make, whether to them it's just a case of being silly, having fun or an innocent mistake, it happens. An incident which I heard of recently comes to mind when talk-
ing about mistakes and being irresponsible. This incident has created the title for this week’s column. We all know that in an exam we have to write with a pen, likewise in life everything we do is permanent and cannot be undone. But some teenagers think they have pencils and erasers in their hands, which makes them believe that whatever mistakes they make, they or their parents can suddenly erase. Nothing is wrong with having fun and being carefree. I just believe that as a teenager we should be equally responsible simply because somebody else should not have to clean up our messes. Do you have a story on a mistake you made which you later regretted? Email me, Priya.nunkumar@gmail.com to tell me your story!
of this task team. Baboo, it is well known, has no ground roots support in this area and like the other Indian councillor resorts to importing people from outside the core of Stanger Manor to get his quorum. I am aware the ANC is now in election mode and is trying to win back the confidence of the Indian community it has neglected in recent years. How can we take its efforts seriously if it continues to allow discredited people whose only purpose in getting onto council

is to enrich themselves? If we have to heed the call by Zikalala then that task team must be disbanded immediately and a proper process put in place. Sanjay Kalakapersad
Wake up and smell the roses IT seems to me Mr Frank Du Toit is living in a cocoon of his own or he has been badly misinformed by a senile pensioner. To say repairs has not been done at the RA Moodley Old Age Home since 2006 is absolutely ridiculous since the ANC took over ward 19 in 2006.
I have been in charge of reporting repairs. I wanted to say if repairs are not being done then I must be failing in my duties. For the past three months municipal workers have been here almost every day doing all sorts of repairs like varnishing doors replacing putty on windows, patching floor
tiles, fixing toilets and taps, replacing geysers etc. They repaired a ceiling two weeks ago. It’s a pity Mr Du Toit didn’t come on a tour before contacting the Weekly. I would have been proud to take him on a tour. Wake up Mr Du Toit and smell the roses. Eileen Powell
ADVERTORIAL
Motivational talk to overcome drug addiction “SOMETHING to believe in...” is a motivational talk by a home grown KwaDukuza author, Sashi Jaisingh. The talk is very professionally designed for the understanding of teenagers and aims to prevent them from beginning addictive behaviour. The many informative slides, make it easier for young minds to
grasp some (otherwise) complicated subjects. The audience can expect to be practically informed of how and why destructive behaviour begin, why people get trapped into addictive cycles and the scary results of where those lifestyles can lead, which intends to make the listener think twice about experimenting
with addictive substances. For people who have already begun addictive lifestyles, a new process is also unveiled and explained, which can help make beating addiction a lot easier. It is well worth your child experiencing the talk, as this work is a good initiative in the war against addiction.

Darnall Action bounce back WEEKLY REPORTER DARNALL Action Sporting I bounced back to winning ways last Wednesday night after toppling log leaders Gledhow (21-15) in a Distel Richelieu-sponsored Dolphin Coast DartsUnionLeaguegameplayedinDarnall. Gledhow, whotoppledNevil’sAutoafortnight ago were odds-on favourites to clinch the tie following their rich vein of form. After a tame 3-3 draw in the opening frame, the hosts took a narrow 7-5 lead after winning the 2ndframe (4-2). Gledhow battled gamely in the 3rd frame but could only muster a 3-3 stalemate. Darnall extended their lead (14-10) with a comprehensive 4-2 win in the 4th frame. The visitors reduced the deficit to 2points (14-16) after winning the penultimate frame. But, Gledhow were firing blanks in the final frame resulting in their 1-5 (15-21) demise. Nine Pillay and Devan Gounden were in devastating form for Darnall winning five games apiece. Darrel Shanmagum was the only Gledhow player to offer any resistance winning five games from six appearances. Meanwhile, a five-man Gledhow United outfit snatched a thrilling 20-16 win against stragglers Nevil’s Auto II. United recorded a comprehensive 4-2 win in the opening two frames to take a commanding 8-4 lead. Nevil’s Auto II retaliated with a hard fought 4-2 win in the 3rd frame. United stepped on the accelerator in the 4thframetorecordanemphatic5-1winand virtually slam the door on the faces of their rivals after enjoying a comfortable 15-9 lead. After a disappointing 3-3 draw in the penultimate frame, Nevil’s Auto II needed to win the final frame convincingly (6-0) in the hope of snatching a late draw. The 4-2 win by Nevil’s Auto II in final frame was not enough to save the blushes of Nevil Kisten’s charges. Man-of-the-match Charlie Pillay was the toast of the United outfit boasting an unblemished record of six wins on a trot. Sanjay Singh inspired Nevil’s Auto I to a comprehensive 25-11 win against Darnall Action Sporting II.

HE Moodliar sisters Senayah and Kamaya excelled at the Junior Africa Golf Challenge held at the Zebula Golf Estate in the Limpopo Province in August. Despite the intense energy-sapping heat over the three-days, the Moodliar sisters stunned the large field to etch their names into the golfing history books at the Zebula Golf Estate. Ten-year-old Senayah proved too strong for her rivals after being crownedchampionintheunder-10 category. Her junior Africa Golf Challenge victory guaranteed her a place in the Ryders Cup, which was held two days later. Despite being grouped along with girls much older than herself, she gave a good account of herself in the Ryders Cup. Seven-year-old Kamaya, walking in the footsteps of her sibling, was also successful finishing runner-up in her under-8 category at the junior Africa Golf Challenge. The Moodliar girls have been participating in competitive golf tournament since December, 2011 andeversincetherewasnoturning back for the golf crazy “twins”. They have won more than 14 tournaments in the last two years and are destined to reach greater golfing heights. Kamaya is the youngest female golfer in South Africa to be handicapped. Both of them were awarded the rare opportunity of being selected to participate in the World Golf Championship in Scotland in May, 2013. Despite the cold and rainy weather conditions in Scotland,
