PROGRAMME of activities has been arranged leading up to the state funeral of former South African president Nelson Rohlihlahla Mandela in his hometown of Qunu, in the Eastern Cape on Sunday. ANC Greater KwaDukuza regional secretary Muzi Sithole, speaking at a press briefing on Monday morning, said condolence books have been distributed to KwaDukuza, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe and Mandeni Municipalities in which community members can write condolences. “Members of the public can visit various institutions to write their condolence messages. The prayers that our people offered when our former president was in hospital not only strengthened his fighting spirit but also served to unite us. “We need that unity as we mourn and celebrate the life of the world’s greatest freedom fighter, unifier and father of our nation with dignity, respect and honour,” said Sithole. He added that a fitting tribute to Mandela would be to advance the unity and reconciliation that his life epitomised. The condolence books are at Chief Albert Luthuli Museum, Ballito Spar, Sangweni Centre in Ballito, Sundumbili Plaza in Mandeni, Tusong Centre in Maphumulo, Ndwedwe Centre and KwaDukuza Town Gardens. On Monday night, a memorial service was held at the Ebandla Hotel in Ballito. The regional memorial service will take place on Thursday at 3pm in Ntshawini (Sophia Sports Ground). The provincial memorial service is to be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday from 10am. Transport will be available for those attending. For details, contact Ngcobo on 071 211 1456. MERVYN KRISHNA SMALL businesses in KwaDukuza have been given a shot in the arm following a four day business seminar which zoomed in on various aspects of business. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu
Small businesses given a boost said the event was a fruitful exercise and people have shown a willingness to advance. “This feature will change the way business was done before. Business people in KwaDukuza could take our small economy to another level,” said Mthembu. He said they have no doubt that the briefings will result in positive spin-offs
as people have told them that this is what they have been looking for. “These broad-based business engagements are meant to facilitate knowledge of business aspects and show the ropes tosmallbusinesses. This shows thatthese sessions were not a waste of time but a revolutionary business discussion. That is why we have also dubbed the theme the same way.
“This seminar means justice to small people who have for long had their backs to the wall due to a lack of knowledge. We say, the gains of KwaDukuza Municipality as a service delivery agency, are the gains of the people who benefit from its services.” The mayor went on to say this is their way of doing away with redundant businesses which have for long been
suffocated by the lack of innovative ideas. “We have received strong support from our sponsors and indications of the possibilities of hosting yet another massive event next year.” The event was sponsored by Standard Bank, Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA KZN), Ithala Development Finance Corporation and Enterprise iLembe Development Agency.

LEMBE District Municipality partnered with Gagasi 99.5 FM to host the 2013 News Stakeholders Gala Dinner at eBandla Hotel in Ballito last week. The dinner was attended by management, staff, sponsors and stakeholders of both organisations including deputy mayor of the iLembe District Dolly Shandu, municipal manager Muzi Madlala, Gagasi FM board chairman Peter-Paul Ngwenya and managing director Chris Meyiwa. Guest speaker for the evening was economic development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu who was standing in for premier Senzo Mchunu. Former police commissioner Bheki Cele was also present. In his speech, Shandu highlighted the district’s recent achievements and some economic development programmes including the school’s nutrition project that is currently being rolled-out in KZN. Gagasi FM Managing Director Chris Meyiwa said that they were considering changing the station pay-off line from Sound of the City to Sound of KZN. He thanked iLembe for partnering with the station, noting how the district boasts enormous heritage and how it has produced some of the country’s greats such as Chief Albert Luthuli, King Shaka, Malusi Gigaba, DJ Cindo and has celebrities like Steve Martin, Clive Barker and many others calling it home. “This really is an effective public private partnership and we hope that more synergies will be developed in the coming year,” he said. Dolly Shandu, Gagasi board chairman Peter-Paul Ngwenya and managing director Chris Meyiwa are seen with economic development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu.

THERE has been a considerable decrease in crime in
j
KwaDukuza since the small town’s mayor Ricardo Mthembu vowed to clamp down on vagrancy. Mthembu told the Weekly that in the past three weeks, police have managed to arrest several criminals. “This shows our seriousness in bringing the level of crime down.” He said he was working with structures such as community safety forums to intensify the Operation Khuculula (to clean) during the festive season and beyond. “This in an attempt to get rid of the vagrants, close down abandoned buildings and to protect the town’s citizens.” The mayor could not confirm whether or not there were any hair snatchers among those vagrants put behind bars. Previously, the Weekly reported that the mayor had turned his focus on abandoned buildings in the town, after noting that vagrants had been operating from them and going around the city centre hacking off young women’s hair. Mthembu was prompted to action after reports that young women were afraid to walk through the CBD. It is believed that the thieves — much like their chain-snatching counterparts also operating in the town — roam the streets with scissors and looking for hair to cut off and sell on the black market. The mayor said people had been very supportive of the campaign.

Thumbs-up at homes for Mandeni community JYOTHI LALDAS
M
ANDENI mayor Siphesihle Zulu visited all wards in the area which raised housing issues during the Integrated Development Plan review meeting with officials from the Department of Human Settlement and contractors last week. The much awaited visit was informed by concerns raised by community members that housing has been delivered in many wards but areas where there are slums were left unattended. Zulu, with all affected ward councillors, invited the KZN Department of Human Settlement to explain the status quo and what needs to be done. It was revealed that people from wards five, 10 and 12 will be covered by the Mathonsi Sundumbili Infill Phase Two project that coves a thousand people. Registration for houses began on Tuesday according to implementing agent Berry Thynesien.
He explained the requirements which include a valid South African identity document, dependents’ birth certificates and proof of income that is not more than R3 500. Addressing the hundreds of potential beneficiaries at the Machibini Community Hall, under Inkosi Linda Mathonsi, Zulu said: “The Mandeni Municipality is serious about service delivery and will ensure that Mandeni communities have a better life.” He said a house is a need not a privilege. “We have brought officials from the department after we received the commitment from MEC Ravi Pillay that all our housing projects will receive urgent attention.” Zulu then moved to address the people of Manda Farm in ward seven, who were not sure whether they would receive homes in a rural housing scheme or semi urban houses. The Department of Human Settlement reported the status quo

on the semi urban scheme and the community member informed the mayor that a rural housing scheme was not ideal since they are living closer to town. The community was excited about the news that all plans have been approved and only bulk service infrastructure needs to be erected. It was confirmed that 1000 unit will be built for the Manda Farm community with proper schools and community facilities. The last visited was to KwaSithebe, where there is more informal dwelling and slums close to the industrial area. The contractor explained that in this specific area, there was land which could be developed for a rural scheme as well as semi urbanhousingandrentalfamilyunits for people who are only in the area for employment. The event ended on the high note with the mayor addressing the community’s role in fighting HIV/ Aids.

R20 million for Macambini Bulk Water Supply Project WEEKLY REPORTER
C
OMMUNITIES of Macambini, Manda Farm and the outskirts of the Mandeni central business area will soon no longer have to drink unpurified Tugela River water, thanks to the Macambini Bulk Water Supply Project. iLembe District Municipality mayor Welcome Mdabe made the announcement at the oThukela sports ground where a community meeting was held to discuss the project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA). Speaking at the meeting Mdabe said it was important for the municipality to have the EIA meeting so that the community can play a role in making sure their basic need for water is met without negatively impacting on the environment. “There are many roles you have to play regarding how the water will get to you. As the municipality we recognise that there are animals, trees and people which are part of the environment and that we must
make sure that in the process of bringing service delivery to you, you are not inconvenienced. And if you are, it should be as minimal as possible,” he said. The Macambini Bulk Water Supply Project will see a 6,2 kilometre long HDP (plastic) pipe being constructed which will carry water from Resevoir A in Sundumbili to J1, Majuba and Manda Farm all the way below the railway line near Sappi to the Mandeni Pump Station with other smaller pipes feeding into these areas. “The pipe will be placed below the road or the sidewalk. Your fences might be affected but nobody’s house will be touched. If this happen’s call me,” said Mdabe. Work on the project is scheduled to begin in June next year and is expected to create 60 temporary jobs and five permanent posts with local contractors with grade one to three also standing to benefit. Mdabe told the community that the bulk water supply project was just the beginning.
Mayor of iLembe District Municipality Welcome Mdabe, chairperson of the infrastructure committee councillor Jabulani Zondo and Mandeni Municipality mayor Siphesihle Zulu singing at the opening of the Macambini Bulk Water Supply Project. “You will have household connections eventually and the bigger plan is to get rid of pit toilets as well. We all know you can’t have a flush toilet with no water,” he said. Mdabe told residents the reason it had taken so long to bring the project to the people was the non-settling of water accounts by ratepayers. He alerted residents to the fact that iLembe is owed R251 million by ratepayers. “If we were to bring the Tugela
River water to you in its natural form, you will all hit the streets in protest. “Cleaning water costs money, there are chemicals to be bought, staff to be paid and there are transport costs as well. Mdabe said the municipality spent R98 million towards the treatment work and a resevoir to keep the water and now its 45 million litres a day. “The problem is R98 million is not even half of what iLembe gets from
ratepayers for water and that is why it taken us so long to bring this project,” said Mdabe. Mandeni Municipality mayor Siphesihle Zulu said he was confident the Macambini Bulk Water Supply Project would be successful because of the good relationship between iLembe, the local municipality, the traditiona leaders, councillors and ward committees. “This project will open doors for other development project for our area,” he said.

WAZULU-Natal is ready for the festive season with an aggressive security plan in place to make sure the province is secure all the way up to the 2014 elections. The plan, formed jointly by KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety and Liaison Department, KZN SAPS, KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate and eThekwini Metro Police, will see well over 30 000 security personnel deployed in the province over this period. It allows for provision of high police visibility during the festive season and in the build up to the 2014 elections. The scheme was tabled at the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) made out of key stakeholders, including KZN cabinet members. Well over 30 000 security operatives drawn from SAPS, specialized units, eThekwini Metro Police and volunteers will be deployed during this period. Specialised units such as police airwing, tactical response team and others will also be on stand-by over the festive season. Extra funding had to be obtained to finance this deployment. Briefing the cluster, KZN Police Commissioner, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the plan would also focus on 45 problem police stations attending to the
issues of political intolerance, social ills, crime against women and stock-theft. MEC Mchunu, who chairs the cluster, welcomed the plan, saying that the cluster believed that KwaZulu-Natalwasreadyforthe festive season and up to March 2014 “We wish to make a clarion call to the people in KwaZuluNatal and in South Africa to start playing their roles to prevent and combat crime during the festive season,” said Mchunu. Mchunu said the plan would now be presented to cabinet. Locally it is that time of the year again where stokvel members will divide the money they have been saving all year long. KwaDukuza SAPS media liaison officer Constable Sbusiso Khumalo advised that stokvel members divide the money electronically instead of carrying large sums of money. He also said there are many children who go missing during the festive season and therefore urged parents to keep their children close to them. “Seeing as there are no proper places of safety in KwaDukuza, we appeal to parents to hold theirchildrenbythe hand so that they do not go missing in busy areas.” Khumalo said the police have increased visibility within the CBD and the outskirts of KwaDukuza. He said there are bikers, a

HIRSCH’S inter-branch health challenge kicked off in Ballito recently when they hosted a wellness day for staff members. Together with Discovery and Iron Angel Gym specialists, they gave advice on good eating habits. The Hirsch Health Challenge will involve all 17 Hirsch branches throughout the group and is part of a campaign to help staff reach and maintain their health goals. Hirsch’s managing director, Richard Hirsch, said: “Our staff are extremely important to us. We value them enormously and want to help them keep on top of any health issues that they may have. “This programme will be on-going, and we will also be entering Hirsch’s in the Discovery Corporate Challenge event.” The Discovery team measured everyone’s cholesterol, body mass index and blood pressure – amongst other routine health checks to ensure that everyone is fit and healthy going forward into 2014. Iron Angel’s Johnathan Goatcher was also on board to entice staff to join the gym and take their healthy living to the next level. “Working on your body is just as important as working on your mind; by joining gym you are effectively improving your body, mind and overall wellness.” said Johnathan.

Parents should not get drunk and leave children unattended,” warned Buthelezi. He said all police will be on duty to ensure that the public is safe during the season. He said patrols will be intensified. He also urged those who are drunk to stay away from the beach. “If you have consumed alcohol please do not go anywhere near the beach.” Mandeni SAPS Media Liaison Officer, W/O Bongani Hlabisa, said the Mandeni police will follow a plan from province to conduct as many roadblocks in the areaaspossibleandpolicewillbe deployed in busy areas such as shopping centres and the beach.

We will focus on increased visibility in hot spots.” Khumalo urged beachgoers to be weapon and alcohol free. “We appeal to the public in general not to bring weapons and alcohol to the beach as it is very disturbing to turn them away at vehicle checkpoints at Blythedale and Zinkwazi beach. We appeal to the shoppers to be vigilant at all times and not to carry large sums of cash.” Umhlali SAPS media liaison officer Captain Percy Buthelezi warned the public to ensure that their cars are locked at shopping centres. “Stealing of laptops, cell phones and other belongings in cars is on the rise in Umhlali. MHLALI SAPS and the KwaDukuza Municipality community safety department have teamed up to keep an eye open for unpaid fines and drunken driving in Ballito for the festive season. The squad was stationed at the northern off ramp coming into Ballito last week, and will be at different points throughout the holidays. By midday last Wednesday, traffic officer Sihle Mokoena said 30 arrests had already been made and he urges the public to settle their fines. “ThereisaR100finefor outstanding traffic offences, and if people cannot pay, we are arresting them andtakingthemtotheUmhlali station. OU go to the ATM and check your bank account to see a pleasant surprise: your bonus has come in! Visions of big screen TVs and vacations swim through your head. Or is it all of that looming debt you’ve got? Regardless of what you are going to do you are now in possession of some extra money that you’re going to have to do something with. If this is a regular occurrence for you then you might have already spent the money. I know that when I got a bonus from work I was either counting on it for something or I had already a plan to spend it. Regardless that bonus was pretty much as good as gone no matter what I ended up spending the money on.

Think before spending your hard-earned bonus I’m sure that I’m no different than most peoplewhogetabonusaspartoftheirpay. Extra money comes into our lives from time to time and there are both things that we should do with it and things we shouldn’t. We’ll look at examples from both sides. What to do The list of things that you could do with a bonus are pretty much endless, from a R100 to a R10000 bonus. Depending on your financial situation here are a few of the obvious choices for spending our bonuses: Settle debt – a cash windfall is a great way to get ahead of the game. Get caught up on bills – this one should come first.
Pay off loans – bonuses can be a great way to get rid of loans and credit cards in one go. Pay off the mortgage – this can save you thousands down the road. Put the money into retirement savings – you might be able to save some extra money on your taxes if you do this & retire better. Build up an emergency fund – if you’ve got one great, if not this is the best place to start. Invest the money – aside from retirement investment this could be a great way to start an investment portfolio. Give some away to charity and donations to the less privileged. What not to do Thebiggestprobleminmyopinionwith
bonuses is that you all of a sudden have all this extra money to spend. That vacationtoIndiaallofasuddenbecomespossible as does that big screen TV but that doesn’t mean we should spend the money this way. A few things that you should avoid when it comes to bonuses: Big ticket purchases – spending all of the money at once won’t help anything. Not setting the money aside in some way – its likely to vanish very quickly. Splurge spending – you might be hitting the Visa Card before you know it. Expecting it to last longer than you think – because you have it doesn’t mean you need to spend it. Keeping your lifestyle generally the same while getting the money to work for
you will have a long term impact far beyond the benefit a TV. A bonus should be treated as something separate to your regular income, which can help you maximise itonewayoranotherwithoutseeingitvanish before your eyes. By keeping my lifestyle and spending the same I could have made a huge impact to my life now but instead I spent the money like it was going out of style and now I’m left with nothing to show for it. Not the country we fought for WE are not just angry about e-tolls because it means less money in an already thin wallet every month. We are angry because the people that fought for the freedom of this country did not surrender their lives so that rampant corruption can continue unchecked, while unscrupulous politicians make a mockery of the justice system. Evil thrives when good people do nothing. The forced e-tolling is a final straw that is enough to make South Africans actually want to fight back against an unjust system. When we decide to stand for something, it means we will inevitably stand against something. The issue is not about having a “white” government or a “black” government – we want to strive and contend for a “just” government. It breaks my heart when I think of the likes of Solomon Mahlangu – who died a year before I was born – who bravely surrendered his life for the hope of a better future for the people of this country. His words haunt me: “…Tell my people that I love them and that they must continue the struggle. My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom.” As an Indian woman, I enjoy some of the fruits of freedom that people like Solomon died for. Twenty years ago, I would not have been able to marry the wonderful white Afrikaans man that I
know call my husband. Now, in the new South Africa, finding love across the colour line is not illegal. Despite the hardships that my family have endured, I have been able to work hard and live in an area of my choice, all the while striving for excellence in areas of work and finding ways to make a positive contribution to society. This is not someone else’s problem to fix. This is mycountry.Thesearemypeople.Thefightmustcontinue with me because if I do nothing, then I will fail the next generation. I fail myself and the people who gave their lives for my hard-won freedom if I sit back and complain and don’t take positive action. These are the things I can do – and choose to do – to exercise my freedom and redeem the power that I have to bring about positive change: >> I can speak up in private and public platforms, even when it feels my voice is not being heard. I still have a right to speak. >> I can exercise my power with my vote. >> I can still stay dedicated to my country and to my people and not allow the negativity of a few to poison the power of possibility still alive in my hands. >> I can fight for the country I want to live in; it is my responsibility. Proudly South African

Service delivery sham? I HAVE been a resident in the ward 10 area for almost all my life. If I can recall I started primary school while living in this area and even finished my matric here without the sight of electricity. I am disturbed because we speak of service delivery, but up until this day nothing has been done in my area to ensure such promises are met. In the past three months there has been some sortof construction going on in the ward 10 area. Ten houses had been promised electrification by year end, but this
was false. It was found that the electrical company had made incorrect connections. This is sad because theresidentsoftheareawerehopefulthatthisChristmas they would have electricity. Now with the elections nearing, the municipality needs to revise how this will reflect on their reputation. Why are people being treated unequally, yet we live under the guise that we are liberated and equal in every sense? Concerned resident

‘I’m sure my father has welcomed him’ CHRIS NDALISO MADIBA was like a father to Dr Albertina Luthuli, the daughter of the late struggle icon Chief Albert Luthuli. “Now that he is gone, I’m profoundly confused and saddened by his passing. He had the ability to make you feel safe, secure, and he was able to comfort people in times of trouble,” said Luthuli. She believes there was an irony in the
manner in which she had heard about her own father’s death, and that of Madiba. “I heard about my father’s death while I was driving home from work. It was broadcast on the radio that he was hit by a train. When I heard about Madiba’s passing I was driving … how ironic?” she said. Luthuli believes that the relationship between Madiba and her family has now been renewed. “I’m sure my father on the other side has welcomed him with open

Grief, love and celebration for Madiba
>> Residents honour former president and remember his legacy MERVYN KRISHNA
W
HILE messages of support from the international community flowed into the country, dignitaries and ordinary folk started arriving in the country ahead of the memorial service and funeral for former President Nelson Mandela. Outpouring grief turned into joyous celebrations in South Africa as people turned their attention to Nelson Mandela’s legacy rather than the voidheleftinthecollectiveheartofthe nation. Responding to government’s call foranationaldayofprayerandreflection, special services were held in honour of Nelson Mandela across the country on Sunday. In KwaDukuza the Trinity Methodist Church held a special tribute to Nelson Mandela - both at the Darnall and Stanger Churches. Led by Roy Naicker, the tribute centred on his work as a leader who preached forgiveness and reconciliation. A collage of his history in pictures was flighted to the music of Brenda Fassie’s “My Black President” which was banned when first released in 1989, but she performed it at his inauguration. The message was punctuated by Johnny Clegg’s “Asimbonanga” that played in the background. Mandela’s close links with KwaDukuza, particularlythefirstrally held in Groutville on his release from prison as well as the Freedom of KwaDukuza bestowed upon him were some of the highlights of the local tribute.

Roy Naicker presented moving tributes to Nelson Mandela at the Darnall and Stanger Methodist Churches on Sunday.
The members of the Stanger Siva Temple pay homage to Madiba. The Stanger Siva Temple also dedicated its Sunday service to the memory of Nelson Mandela. Various speakers praised him for his insight and faith in this country as well as his “never give up” attitude and his love for all people. During the prayer, 27 lamps were
lit to signify the 27 years that Mandela spent in prison. Community stalwart SV Naicker in his address said in Hinduism, the lamps represent the transition from darkness to light, in this sense it represents the transition from prison to freedom.
“Todayisnotaboutpolitics, butthe man who created democracy and brought about peaceful transition to freedom for all people.” Manee Padayachee said the greatness of the man, who spent 27 years of his life in prison for the people for this country, made him a global icon
andmostreveredpersonofhisgeneration. Dan Naidoo said Mandela was the father of the nation, owing to his ideals of non-violence and compassion for all, be it the oppressed or the oppressor, became the father of the world.

>> “We were struck by the humility of Madiba.”
Nelson Mandela and Goolam Suleman at a dinner held in KwaDukuza.
T
HE late ANC comrade Goolam Suleman was a close friend and confidante of Chief Albert Luthuli and through this met with Madiba many times. Goolam together with others like the late EV Mahomed ensured that the Chief was able to carry out his work as the peoples’ leader. Goolam’s store in King Shaka Street, Liberty Stores, and his home were used as the Chief’s base as well as the venue for many secret political meetings. Goolam and EV were also trusted with arranging couriers for the Chief, receiving correspondence for him, transporting the Chief to meetings and finding suitable venues for him to receive visitors. Suleman’s memoirs entitled “In the Shadow of Chief Albert Luthuli” describe the young Mandela’s visits to KwaDukuza to meet with the banned Chief. Arrangements for these secret visits fell to Goolam
and EV. On one such occasion Goolam and EV successfully accompanied Mandela to Durban following information being received about Security Police presence between Tongaat and Verulam. In order to avoid Mandela’s arrest especially while he had important material on him, EV took with him the tape recordings, letters and documents that the Chief and Mandela had prepared and drove ahead while Goolam and Mandela followed in a separate car. Goolam’s memoirs speak of the confidence Mandela generated, his dynamic personality as well as his appreciation for the help they gave him. In 1990 when Mandela was released from prison, he attended a dinner in KwaDukuza in his honour hosted by the KwaDukuza branch of the ANC. Mandela spent the night at the Suleman family

Goolam’s son Mahomed Suleman recalls with fondness the time that Mandela spent at their home. “We were struck by the humility of Madiba, his caring character and his boundless energy. “You could not help but be moved by his concern for others and his vision of a democratic and peaceful South Africa. “My family’s thoughts and condolences go out to all those who loved and cherished Madiba. “ He was truly an extraordinary individual whose legacy we need to live up to,” added Suleman.

Jayce Singh recollects moments with Mandela FORMER Stanger ML Sultan Secondary School principal Jayce Singh, now 67-years-old, remembers his first and only meeting with the late Nelson Mandela when he was only 16-years-old: “It was a cold winter's night in August and my cousins and I were sitting at the dining room table studying for a test. I was staying at my aunt's place in Sea View Road, KwaDukuza, and my uncle Rajend Dayal, a teacher at Stanger Secondary School, was attending a meeting. “When the front door opened, I expected only my uncle to walk in. However, accompanying my uncle was a huge, giant of a man wearing a khaki overcoat who barely managed to get under the top of the doorway. A quick "good evening" was said and he disappeared into the bedroom. “After using the bathroom and without further conversation he went to lie down on the bed. Meanwhile, I was informed by my uncle that I had to sleep with my cousins as their "visitor" would be sleeping on my bed. “When I went to collect my pyjamas from the room, Madiba was stretched on the bed with his feet dangling - the bed was too small for this tall man. “He was still wearing his overcoat as he was on the run and ready to leave if the need arose. We went off to sleep and when we awoke the next morning, the visitor had left.” Speaking to the Weekly, Singh said: “We were not told that the visitor was Mr Mandela and neither did we ask. We somehow knew that we could not talk about his staying at our house as he and my uncle JN Singh, were on the run from the police. “We did not reveal this information for the next 28 years until the releaseofMandelain1990.Canyouimagineourshockanddisappointment when we read in the paper that a few days later he was arrested by the police outside Howick. Then only did we learn that he had come to KwaDukuza to meet with Chief Albert Luthuli and our house was used as a safe house. “Thereafter, I followed the events of the Rivonia Trial and the subsequent conviction of the accused including Mandela. I really didn't believe that I would see these leaders coming out alive, such was the repression of the apartheid state at that time. When they were sentenced to life imprisonment, I held the belief that one day they would be free as the oppressed people of this country together with the outside world would overthrow apartheid.” Singh next saw Mandela in 1997 when he was given the freedom of the town by the KwaDukuza Municipality. HismotherwasaskedbytheorganiserstorepresenttheHinducommunity to render a prayer and despite making a request to some of the officials to allow him and his mother to meet Mandela personally, the request was denied. His mother is the sister of JN Singh who was Mandela's personal friend together with IC Meer. “It was a big disappointment not to meet this icon as I regarded him as one of the true heroes of the struggle to obtain our freedom.” Singh also remembers how he surreptitiously obtained a copy of Mandela's speech at the trial which was banned at that time from a member of the Indian Congress in KwaDukuza in the early 1970s. “I was given just a few hours to read and digest the contents as thedocumentwasbeingpassedaroundamongthemembers.Iliterally read it under the blanket, such was our fear of being caught with it.” Singh said while he mourns the passing away of Nelson Mandela, he celebrates the life of this remarkable human being.
Luthuli Museum pays tribute to a hero Nelson Mandela THE Luthuli Museum expresses its deepest sympathy to the family of the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who passed away peacefully on the night of 5 December 2013. The country has lost a hero and an icon
of humility. The world over mourns the passing of such a great man. In his autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom” Nelson Mandela describes his visit to Chief Albert Luthuli and a meeting in a house of an Indian lady in the town of
KwaDukuza on the day before his arrest on 5 August 1962. Despite successive banning orders and the constant police surveillance the two men were about to hold regular clandestine meetings at the home of Chief Luthuli

Madiba may no longer be with us, but it is his spirit and legacy that must live on in the hearts and minds of us all. The struggle for freedom is over but the triplechallengeofpoverty, unemploymentandinequality still confronts us. We can continue serving and honouring Madiba by furthering his dreams and ideals. We must replicate his vigour, fortitude and determination in tackling issues such as crime, health and education. In pursuing all these worthy objectives, we must never forget Madiba's greatest attributes - HUMILITY, FORGIVENESS and ACCOUNTABILITY! In his own words, :''Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished. The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement! God bless Africa!'' Rest in Peace, Madiba! IWOULDliketoexpressmydeepestsorrowand heartfeltcondolencesonthepassingawayofan icon, a true leader and statesman and above all a phenomenal human being. Mandela will always be remembered and revered for his selfless struggle against tyranny and oppression and for eventually attaining our freedom. In his autobiography, he wrote: "I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. “But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. “I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. “But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended."

T first glance, KwaDukuza's maths and science whizz-kid Keleiah Anne Pillay is just a sweet school pupil. However, this grade seven pupil from a small town can compete against the best in the world. She did this at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held in the Philippines last month and finished with a bronze medal. TheIMSOisanannualcompetition in Maths and Science organised by the Directorate of Kindergarten and Primary Education, Ministry of National Education. It has been conducted since its inception in major cities in Indonesia which is being participated in mostly by Asian countries and territories like Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong and Philippines. Keleiah, who is the daughter if Dr JudyVythelingamandteacherNGPillay, said the competition was really tough. “I did not expect to win bronze. However, I am happy with my performance.” Keleiah, who is currently at Crawford North Coast, plans to attend St Mary's School in Kloof next year and continue with her studies in London to become a travel journalist. When she was just 10-years-old, she designed a project on a Bio Mass Fuel Plant for Gledhow Sugar Mill. The project has since been on display at the company’s reception area.
Proud parents and teachers congratulated the grade R pupils of KwaDukuza Primary School at their graduation ceremony. Seen at the graduation are from left: Melissa Govender, Samkele Zungu and Palesa Mthethwa. PHOTO: NOTHANDO NDLOVU

In Loving Memory Little we knew that day God was going to call your names. In life we loved you all dearly, in death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. For part of us went with you the day God called you all home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is our guide and though we cannot see you, you are always at our sides. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again… Although death has separated us physically, faith and love have bound us eternally. Though we cannot see you, we know you are here with us in our every thought as we think about you each day. Though we cannot touch you, we feel the warmth of your smile as we turn the page to a new chapter in our lives. You and your family are kindly requested to attend the Yearly Memorial Ceremony of the late Mr & Mrs. Govindasamy Chetty and the late Mr & Mrs. Ahmed Samed on Saturday, 14 December 2013 at 2 Ruby Crescent Padianagar, Tugela Rail at 3.30pm. Prayer Service will be conducted by the Tugela Cultural Academy. Your presence will be highly appreciated.
Forever in our hearts… Always in our thoughts … Never alone. We know you’re here, standing in the corner-watching,
Your presence will be highly appreciated.

Mr & Mrs Ahmed Samed
Five years have passed since the fatal call, your departure shook us all. The years may wipe out many things, but some they wipe out never. Your life was full of family and friends. Sad are hearts that love you, silent are tears that fall but not having Lilly Govender you around is the hardest part of all. Thinking of you is easy, we do it everyday, missing you is a pain that never goes away, there will always be an empty space in our hearts that can only be cherished with the memories you left behind. The love that we have for you will always remain in our hearts. Forever loved, honoured, cherished, treasured and always missed. Inserted by Rajan, Vijay and family.

S part of their annual Toy Story drive, East Coast Radio handed out early Christmas gifts to the children at Stanger Hospital on Friday. According to Stanger Hospital public relations officer (PRO) Slindile Mzila about 60 children received toys. “December is a month of giving and we are very grateful that East Coast Radio helped put a smile on all these children’s faces. After losing our former president Nelson Mandela who so dearly loved children, we are happy that there are people who are willing to give and continue with his legacy.” She said it was a happy day for the children as they received early Christmas gifts which the hospital cannot afford. East Coast Radio PRO Anisa Ussuph said the station also visited Mahatma Gandhi and Osindisweni Hospitals where a total of 250 toys were donated on the same day. “Since the launch of this year’s Toy Story, more than 15 000 toys have been distributedtohospitals, clinics and orphanages across KZN. East coasters have also raised more than R1.2 million which goes towards buying food parcels for the provinces underprivileged,” said Ussuph. The East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game was launched on 30 September 2013. “People have opened theirheartsandwallets to the annual campaign that is aimed at bringing joy to the ill and disadvantaged.”

quet on Friday, 13 December at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. President of SDVA, Isaac Abraham expressed his sincere thanks to Sunil Pranpath(CEOofSunilPranpathIncorporated) for his generous R5 000 sponsorship in promoting corporate volleyball in KwaDukuza.
Vinnie Singh, Neil Perumal and Sherwin Adayyapa were in prolific form throughout the season thanks to the brilliance of playmaker Ronald “Tiger” Ponnsamy who made the likes of KSST setter, Sherwin Daniels and Randsons setter, Neeraj Bageloo look ordinary. Undoubtedly, 2013 has been the worst season for Syd Kisten’s KSST charges who surrendered the league crown to Grove End and suffered a humiliating first round defeat in the SDVA year-end knockout at the hands of social league minnows, Titans. KSST came into the tournament hoping to restore the faith of their legion of supporters, but left the courts red-faced after slumping to a 2511; 19-25; 13-15 defeat at the hands of Titans. Volleyballenthusiastswerequietlyrootingfor Titans to go all the way in the year-end knockout tournament after their dramatic 2-1 win against KSST, but they were stopped in their tracks by Randsons in the semi-finals played on Thursday night. They bowed out of the tournament after going down 1-2, paving the way for Randsons to redeem themselves after finishing bridesmaid in nolessthanthreeknockouttournamentthis season. Grove End hardly worked up a sweat in their emphatic straight set (2-0) win against Darnall Action Sporting to set up a mouth-watering final against arch-rivals Randsons. Randsons, come into the final as “underdogs”andtheirhopesofoverpowering the well-oiled Grove End machine rests squarely on the shoulders of Sandhir “Tinboy” Jugmohan, who has been battling to regain his form. The winner in the SDVA yearend knockout tournament will waltz away R1 500 richer with the runner-up pocketing R1 000. Darnall Action Sporting and Titans will contest the 3rd/4th playoffs with the winner collecting R600 and the runner-up R500. President of SDVA, Isaac Abraham expressed his sincere thanks to Yugendrie Naidoo (CEO of Kista’s Mobile Workshop) for her generous R3 000 sponsorship.

>> Local team finishes on top despite wet conditions WEEKLY REPORTER
through ball from midfielder Sphamandla Ndanza. Mkhize brilliantly chipped the ball over the advancing Tornado keeper to level the scores at 1-1. In the 75th minute Nxumalo wasted a golden opportunity of restoring Tornado’s lead, but his shot from close range missed the target. In the 78th minute the Tornado keeper failed to hold onto a powerful long range shot from Mkhize, parrying the ball invitingly onto the feet of Siyanda Maphumulo who gently tapped the ball into an empty goalmouth to give Stars a 2-1 lead. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Mkhize had a golden opportunity of notching up a brace in the hope of sealing the fate of the rivals, but he kicked wide of the target. In the dying minutes of the game, Stars keeper Mlungisi Dladla made an acrobatic save to deny Shandu a goal and give his side a hard earned 2-1 win. Meanwhile, Beez trounced Siyazama 6-1 in a KLFA Premier League game played at the Manor Ground on Saturday. Mavusana registered an emphatic 2-0 win against Happy Stars on Saturday. Rocky Park Football Club notched up back-to-back victories in the KLFA Premier League after trouncing Tiger Boyz 3-0 at the Manor Ground on Sunday. In the 20th minute Victor Mzimela beat the offside trap, but ballooned his shot way over the crossbar. Just before the break Stars striker, Lungelo Masiya broke free on the right flank and crossed the ball to the unmarked Siyabonga Phahla in the box, but the youngster fluffed his shot, kicking straightintotheoutstretchedarmsof the Tornado keeper.
