Municipal jobs not for sale >> Con artist arrested for duping unsuspecting job seekers MERVYN KRISHNA

LEFT: Councillor Pinky Mdletshe with the exhibit. RIGHT: Hlengiwe Dube at the KwaDukuza SAPS.

I

F you are currently job searching and have come across any individual who claims to have contacts with councillors or officials in the KwaDukuza Municipality who wants you to pay them cash to secure work, beware! The KwaDukuza Municipality has confirmed that this is a scam. Complaints have been received that people are being approached by unscrupulous criminals who ask them to pay cash or deposit money into an account, in exchange for a job through internal connections. On Tuesday night last week, a Lindelani woman, Hlengiwe Dube, was arrested by the KwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit after she promised several people jobs at a cost of R2000 each at the municipality. Nomusa Mhlongo, who is unemployed, was also taken for a ride and said the con-artist approached her saying she was working with KwaDukuza councillor Pinky Mdletshe and that the municipality needs 20 people. “Dube said they had already taken on 10 people. However, the job cost R2 000 each. I paid her a deposit of R1 000 on Christmas Eve (24 December). Then on January 2, I gave her R700. I was owing her R300. “However, on Tuesday afternoon I contacted councillor Mdletshe about the job and the payment. She was shocked and approached me,” said Mhlongo. Mdlesthe, after speaking to Mhlongo, contacted the KwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit. The officers conducted a brief investigation and discovered that two other people from the area also paid the con artist money for jobs at the municipality. A trap was then set by the officers.

PHOTOS: MERVYN KRISHNA

The officers photocopied the serial numbers of the R300 Mhlongo owed the con-artist. Mholongo and her friend then proceeded to the con artist's home with the marked R300 and handed it over to her. A cellphone recording in which the con artist saidauniform would be given toMhlongo the following day and she would commence her new job on Monday was also made. As Mhlongo and her friend walked out of the house, the officer pounced on Dube and arrested her with the cash. She was then handed over to theKwaDukuzaSAPS. Thecon artist was charged for theft under false pretense. A second victim Nonkululeko Gumede, said she paid the con artist a deposit of R1 200 for a job at the municipality in December and gave her R350 last week. Dube appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court last week and was released on bail. The KwaDukuza SAPS is making an appeal to all those who have been ripped off to contact them. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu said: “We wish to clarify that there are no jobs

Chain snatchers arrested

Suspects found with stolen jewellery MERVYN KRISHNA

N

-FORCE Security officers arrested two chain-snatchers and recovered gold jewellery from their possession on Thursday last week. The thieves were passing through Mahatma Gandhi Street in the KwaDukuza CBD on foot, pushing a brand new tyre, when N-Force director Nitesh Arjun, who was patrolling the area, noticed the suspicious men. When he got closer to them, the duo abandoned the tyre and tried to flee, but they were arrested by Arjun and his officers.

Investigations revealed the tyre was stolen from an iLembe municipal bakkie which was parked in Mahatma Gandhi Street. One of the suspects had a black

shoulder bag. “When we searched the bag, we found gold jewellery, a pair of scissors and a blade. “Several people who came to see

what was happening, said it was the same suspects who ripped their gold chains from their necks.” Anisha Baruth, who works in the CBD, said she recognised one of the

men who pulled the chain from her neck a few weeks ago in the Market Plaza area. Another woman, Sundry Govender, who had a chain ripped off her neck in Hulett Street, said she could not forget the suspect’s face because when he pulled her chain, his hand slipped. “When he grabbed it again, I noticed his face,” she said. The suspects were handed to the KwaDukuza SAPS with the recovered items. They were charged for theft and possession of stolen property. Philmon Meyiwa of Umlazi and Sandile Gumede of Maphumulo appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The men were remanded in custody pending further investigations.

Checkers in-store winner

Police: No sign of severed hand A HUMAN hand was reported to have been found at a property in Lagoon Drive, Salt Rock on Monday, but police did not find anything at the scene. IPSS’s Frank Labidi said in an online report that his control centre received the call at about 10am, asking for help as a domestic worker had allegedly found the hand in one of the tenant’s rooms. “I personally attended the call and due to the fact that the premises was open, entered and searched for the “hand”. “Nothing suspicious was found and we decided to call in SAPS due to the seriousness of the allegations,” he said. About a three-hour search was conducted, which included Umhlali SAPS staff, provincial staff and IPSS, with nothing being found. Libidi said the witness - reportedly a 17-year-old domestic worker - kept changing her story. Umhlali SAPS station commander Colonel Simon Bhekithemba Zondi said as nothing was found, no docket was opened and the case is now closed. “I was shocked... but after a thorough search, nothing was found,” he said.

Winner of the Checkers in-store competition G Khuzwayo is seen with assistant manager Uriel Govender and store manager Madhan Ramdin. Khuzwayo won a six month supply of nappies for her baby.

The potholes are getting bigger and deeper. Municipal vehicles, councillors and municipal officials drive on the roads regularly but no one seems to do anything. “We pay our rates but we are not getting the required service delivery,” said Naidoo. ESPITE recent massive road infrastructure rehabilitation across KwaDukuza, potholes are still rife. KwaDukuza, which once boasted a good road network is now referred toasthe‘townofpotholes’,ahopeless situation that is getting worse with each passing day. Motorists are “fed -up” with the state of roads and they are now calling on the relevant authorities to immediately take action and remedy the situation. Drivers and pedestrians alike have been complaining about the bad roads, saying they impact negatively on their financial resources as the potholes damage vehicles and spare-parts are expensive. Several motorists complained of their tyres being punctured and rims

pass for small mining pits”. Motorists are frustrated that despite parting with significant sums of money to license their vehicles, obtain driver’s licences and pay other road use charges, there is nothing to show for it. The blame has been laid squarely on the shoulders of the KwaDukuza Municipality who is responsible for the maintenance of roads within the town. The ratepayers have accused the municipality of not doing its job. The road maintenance department administration, whose responsibility it is to mobilise and disburse funds for the purpose of road rehabilitation, has equally been taken to task for failing to measure up. Attempts to get comments from the relevant municipal officials were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

WEEKLY

BRETHREN, let us conspire DESIREE ERASMUS

I

F you didn’t know, gentle reader, that the American National Security Agency (NSA) together with other mostly first world governments is spying on, well, the entire global population, slap yourself vigorously a few times before reading on. It now seems that those unshaven, creepy conspiracy theorists were mostly right, thanks to revelations by one Edward Snowden, who released masses of data to the press last year as proof of how far global surveillance reaches. Ten years ago we thought of conspirophiles who used to bleat about this sort of thing as paranoid nutters sitting in basements clad in tinfoil- hats, drawing faeces-diagrams on walls while hiding from electromagnetic waves and mind control experiments. Today we see them on television answering questions about worldwide public-spying networks. As you will know, the granddaddy of all conspiracy theories is that of the New World Order, which has moved into the mainstream milieu as a quasi social goal for some and a source of worldwide fear for others. The NWO has been adopted by religious and secular conspirophiles alike and goes something like this: The world is secretly controlled by a small corporate-affiliated elite that belong to secret societies such as the Illuminati, Bilderbergers, Skull & Bones, Bohemian Grove and so on. Through these societies, they plot world domination. It’s a bit like ‘Pinky and the Brain’ with well-dressed sociopaths thrown into the mix. We are told that the elite (also more frequently known as the 1%) will achieve total control of the earth by setting up a one world government complete with army, monetary system, media and religion. The uninformed masses (that would be you and me - the 99%) will be relegated to the status of cattle and have as our sole purpose obeisance to the elite. This may sound like your current office environment, but according to conspirophiles, a ‘totalitarian one-world state’ is where we are heading. The conspirophiles say that mass surveillance and a clampdown on things like human rights, freedom of expression and movement, the widening gap between the rich and poor and the erosion of the middle-class are sound indications that the NWO is knocking on our doorstep and will soon slither over the thresh-

old. Those who see a one world government as a positive thing are happy to use the term New World Order devoid of nefarious connotations, seeing it rather as a necessary social evolution that is a panacea to all of the globe’s man-made ills: Legislate the country and its population and you control all of the stupid things they do, like war, famine and environmental cock-ups. Whatever your stance, we will agree that the world is being monitored on a scale never before seen, thanks to massive steps in technology and, many would say, greed. Social media sites likeFacebookandTwitter - and smartphones - make it laughably easy to share personal data and find personal data and the whereabouts of almost anyone, anywhere. And that data can and is very often sold to marketing companies, advertisers and even governments, without our knowledge or consent. This makes it simple to track citizens at any time for reasons that can be decided by

those who are in positions of authority. The possibilities for paranoia here are endless, which is why many conspirophiles have found solace in the Deep Web; mostly an encrypted part of the internet not connected to what we use, the Surface Web. It is here that (for now) governments and law enforcement can be avoided. It is also fertile breeding ground for crime because it is so difficult to penetrate. But before we lock ourselves in our doomsday-prepper caves, let’s remember that no one knows how this tale of potential global woe will play out. It could go either way, really. Or we could simply stay as we are, a little globe wheezing through a tired galaxy. The conspirophiles will keep their tinfoil hats and prepper supplies handy ‘just in case’. And the pro-world-government adherents will remind us that as long as we accept that we are little fish in a very big pond, rife with near-endless ripples, everything will be as secure as it has always been.

EDITORIAL COMMENT:

Let the games begin ALL eyes are on the class of 2013 at the moment - their achievements, pass rates and reality. The president has also decided to strike while the iron is hot. ANC leader Jacob Zuma and the ruling party’s election campaign is in full swing. This weekend, Zuma made a commitment to education and possibly adding two more years to the schooling career. According to the president, the ANC is working on implementing this in approximately two years. Also, the president assures us that more emphasis will be placed on Grade R, more schools will be built and so on (election campaign speeches tend to follow the same trends). While most of the parties are in full swing, providing some ‘entertainment’ to the campaigning is once again the antics of Julius Malema and his party - the Economic Freedom Front (EFF). Malema, who is currently trying to win over the hearts and souls of the KZN crowd, faced an angry crowd in Nkandla last week and a small group at Umlazi this weekend. In true Malema style, the new party leader decided to build a home for a poverty-stricken Nkandla resident, who lives less than five metres from Zuma’s multi-million homestead. However, the locals greeted him with stones and jeers instead of open arms KZN is a tough crowd. Got a story about electioneering in your area? email: jyothilaldas@gmail.com

At Boston City Campus & Business College where Meyer is Dean of Studies, approximately 70% of those that enrol actually complete their studies. This can be attributed to the studentcentred focus, quality of staff and interactive engagement that students at Boston receive. More importantly, the graduate unemployment rate for holders of qualifications in commerce, science and accounting is as low as 3.1%. “Whilst public universities may be subsidisedbythegovernmentandsoaremoreaffordablethanprivateinstitutions, formanystudents the chance of dropping out or failing is far higher. This makes private higher education institutions an attractive option for those who are determined to see their studies through,” said Meyer.

However, the top pupils did not only emerge from schools within the town such as Stanger Manor, Glenhills and Stanger Secondary - semi-rural and rural schools such as Groutville High and Baguni Secondary in Doringkop showed their ability by producing two top achievers. Etete's Brilliant Dube beat the odds by achieving seven A’s in his National Senior Certificate examinations. His outstanding results will see him enrol at the University of Cape Town to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. Banguni's top matriculant also scored seven distinctions and secured a spot as a top achiever. TheWeeklymetwithseveralhighflyers who had not already embarked on their study journey last Friday to find out more

about their matric success and future plans. KwaDukuza'snumberonematriculant, Stanger Manor Secondary's Avreyna Kistensamy said she is off to the University of Cape Town with her eight distinctions to pursue a career in actuarial science. “I want to make lots of money and travel and I believe having this dream is what pushed me through high school and matric. Well, that and the unwavering support of my family, friends, teachers and tutors.” Speaking about how she managed to score eight distinctions, seven of which were over90percent,shesaid:“Consistency and balance. I know a lot of people think all I did was bury myself in books and study day and night, but I really didn't. “Of course studying was my priority over and above everything else, but I still hung out with my friends and watched movies and all the stuff teenagers do, all in moderation. However, I won't deny I followed all the cliches: eat well, sleep well and all that. It works, really!”
