Petrol attendants strike >> If this is the only way then we will continue – Striking petrol attendant JYOTHI LALDAS AND MERVYN KRISHNA

I

LEMBE District service station owners are concerned about the impact of the petrol and motor retail sector strike on their businesses, saying they are facing severe difficulties and possibly 'financial ruin'. The strike by petrol attendants started last Monday and has forced a number of petrol stations in the area to close, with attendants refusing to work and threatening violent action if others choose to work. The strike continues following a breakdown in wage talks between the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and employers. The union is demanding a R30 an hour (12%) increase across-the-

board by 2016 on actual rates of pay in all sectors and divisions for workers earning above R6 000 a month, while employers are offering 7%. Protesting petrol attendants marched in KwaDukuza on Friday last week, stopping at various filling stations and intimidating other workers. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a petrol station owner whose business was forced to close its doors on Friday due to protests, said everyone is affected. “There is a long queue at stations, there are no petrol attendants, people are scared for their lives and when the strikers come around they basically all run away because they don’t want to get hit or stabbed. So it’s affecting the business and the cus-

tomers, it’s affecting everybody’s pocket.” Local motorist, Ravi Singh said he was forced to drive around KwaDukuza searching for a petrol station that was open. “I travel to Durban regularly for work. It does not help if there is no place for me to get fuel. This is becoming a hindrance to drivers. It costs us to drive around hoping to find fuel.” Another motorist, Sipho Mazive said he is fed up with 'strike after strike'. “There has to be a better way to resolve these issues rather than resorting to strikes. These strikes are killing our economy and our future.” It is believed that the same has been occurring in Mandeni and Ballito.

standour needs too.Wewillnot work until our demands are met.” Another striking attendant said while the cost of living is rising, their wages are not. “All we want is a fair chance to survive. If the price of bread and milk keeps going up and our wages don't, how can we make ends meet.If this is the only way then we will continue.” On Thursday last week, Numsa KwaZulu-Natal regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane said a revised offer of a7.5% increase from the employer was rejected. Numsa national treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo said they are due to meet with employers this week. “We are meeting with employers today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday). At the moment, the strike is still ongoing.”

Mandeni resident, Meena Devi said she was “frustrated’ when she went to the Total service station in Mandeni only to find that even the Bonjour convenience store and the Steers fast food counter were closed. “I understand that petrol attendants are striking, but what has that got to do with the store? “Manypeoplerely on thesestores, especially on Sundays when nothing else is open. I think it is all rather ridiculous.” One of the strikers, who chose to remain anonymous forfearofvictimisation, said they work long hours and they deserve more. “We work day and night in all types of weather and we believe we are not asking for too much. “We want the employer to under-

HE local Department of Education together with the KwaDukuza Municipality launched the Quality, Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) in ward 19, Shakaville on Friday last week. Tshelenkosi Secondary, Mavivane Primary and Mbozamo Primary Schools have entered the QLTC campaign in a drive to improve the standard of education at the institutions. The programme will help ensure clear communication lines between teachers, pupils and parents. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu welcomed the programme, applauding the Department of Education for its “relentless” efforts to ensure that pupils in KwaDukuza receive the best that government has

to offer. “An education which lacks the parent-teacher involvement is the heart of failure of the education institution. “As a local sphere of government, education has never been our key function. It is however, our duty to ensure that we go the extra mile to ensure that the work of government in this country is of the highest standard. “I commend the education department, especially the work of school principals, in leading the campaign towards bringing positive change in society,” said Mthembu. He also called on parents to fight against ruthless behaviour, drugs and late attendance at schools. “Compared to other countries, South Africa has made significant improvements in education despite the high levels of illicit substances, ill be-

haviour and teenage pregnancy.” Mthembu believes that the programme will amount to positive spinoffs for the rest of the schools in KwaDukuza. “If we work together, this campaign could bring about a total reform in the institution of education. Councillor Pinkie Mdletshe-Mbambo emphasised the need to strengthen the weak links in education. “We need to strengthen the pupil, parent and teacher relationship. We hope this campaign will usher in a new dawn of quality education. “We cannot say it is game over for some of the disruptive things that have been destabilising education in these schools, but we have to subject the programme to yield positive results for a prosperous society,” said MdlethseMlambo.

THE search for a man who is believed to have drowned off Black Rock at Zinkwazi Beach has yielded no result. According to officials, the man went swimming on Sunday afternoon and was swept away by a strong current at around 3.30pm. IPSS Medical Response emergency medical services manager,

Rakesh Baldeo was first on the scene after being contact by fishermen. He said the victim, a 23-year-old black male, who was with some friends at the beach, surfaced after going into the water for a short time. “The tide was going out so the current was quite strong and it pulled him under again.

“He did not surface after that. The local fire department together with rescue workers and lifeguards searched for the man to no avail. “ The search had to be called off at around 5pm due to poor visibility.” He said the search was resumed by rescue divers on Monday, however, they were unable to find him.

Bus driver ‘intimidated’

>> Driver forced to stop trips as he fears threats from alleged taxi drivers WEEKLY REPORTER

A

FEARFUL bus driver has stopped operating in Gledhow after he was allegedly intimidated by 10 men, believe to be taxi operaters, two weeks ago. Fani Naicker, a driver for Vinolyn Coach Tours, said he has been transporting the Gledhow residents and pupils for the past 10 years. “After these unknown men forced me to stop running the bus in the area, I had no choice but to listen to them as I fear for my life.” It is believed that the men do not want the bus to operate in the area as it

“takes away” their commuters. The incident of alleged intimidation has since been reported to the KwaDukuza SAPS. After hearing about the matter from concerned residents,DAcouncillor, Madhun Sing, requested that MEC for transport, Willies Mchunu intervene. According to Sing, the residents have been using buses for the past 17 years. “Taxis previously did not operate in the area. Pupils and most residents who are part of the working class are accustomed to the buses. We have now urged the MEC to step in. “Out of courtesy I called a meeting

with residents to listen to their views on the matter on Monday. “We also do not know whether the taxis they are now being forced to use are working legally or illegally in the area.” Sing said this has led to some community members walking long distances to get to work or school. “Some of the grade 12 pupils missed their trials because of this.” Ward councillor, Mdu Ngcobo said taxis operated in the area between 2009 and 2010. He said, however, the bus company and taxi owners were negotiating the matter.

Provident funds will NOT exist in the future SANJITH HANUMMAN

Financial Cents

P

ROVIDENT funds have always been known for and favoured by most workers and members of funds for allowing the proceeds at retirement to be paid as a cash lump sum. Recent market developments and proposals are to phase provident funds out over a period of time, which could take up to 50

years. National Treasury has given notice with effect from 1 March 2015, provident fund members will be obliged – with some extreme major exemptions to protect vested rights – to use at least two-thirds of their retirement savings to buy a monthly pension. Some of these major extreme exemptions are touted to be live saving events. Up until March 2015, provident fund members will continue to be allowed to withdraw all their savings as a cash lump sum at retirement. It is important to note members can retire as early as age 55 and as late as age 70, provided their employer consents to such a deviation from the normal retirement age. Treasury is of the opinion that the lack of onus on provident fund members to buy a pension at

retirement means that many members rely on social grants since they spend their retirement savings quickly. With the increase of life expectancy of the average South African this poses further strain on the government as social grants have to be paid for a longer period in time. One of the ways to overcome spending your cash lump sum quickly is to align provident funds and provident preservation funds with other retirement and preservation funds, which require that two-thirds of a member’s retirement savings be used to buy a pension for life. This change will also mean that provident fund members will be given the same tax deduction incentives as pension fund members. National Treasury said in a media statement recently that benefits up to the date of change will be

considered as vested rights and protected as such and measures will be introduced to distinguish historical rights from new rights. Some of these measures are:1.If a provident fund member is older than 55 years of age as at 1 March 2015, the purchase of a pension will not apply if the member remains in the same provident fund until retirement. 2.Accrued savings in provident funds as at March 1, 2015, and any subsequent investment growth, will not be subject to the pension purchase requirement. Administrators of provident funds will be required to keep proper records to ensure the new proposals are effected properly. Whether the retirement savings remains in the provident fund or is transferred to a provident preservation fund, the protection of vested rights will still apply.

Presently if the total value of your retirement savings in any one retirement are R75 000 or less, you are allowed to take the amount as a cash lump sum. This amount will be doubled to R150 000 for all retirement funds and will be extended to include and apply to provident funds as well. By making it compulsory for all retirement fund members to buy a pension with two-thirds of their retirement savings, a more flexible system allowing free portability between funds will come into effect. The transfer of retirement savings to provident and provident preservation funds from other funds will, from March 1, 2015, be free from tax in all instances. This means you will be able to transfer your savings in pension funds to provident funds without tax consequences provided all your tax affairs with SARS are in order.

Too much riding the gravy train, too little respect for voters I KNOW it’s stated in the freedom charter, “that the wealth of the country belongs to all its people and must be shared equally,” but it’s not happening. What we are witnessing is that from the year 2000, the wealth belongs to politicians and people

who are well connected to the ruling party. What I have seen and am still seeing is the poor and the working class being used as elections approach. Politicians try to mislead these people that they represent; they make empty promises. Some parties bluff the people with Tshirts, a once-off meal and after they are voted in you see them again after five years. Politicians earn high salaries and have many perks, but don’ t realise that we are the employers; we are paying them. I have seen some dedicated politicians who have showed and are still showing their strength. They are building that partnership with the poor. Remember, opposition parties play a major role in trying to fight for clean governance by the ruling party. Elect a political partythathelpsyouevery day and not one day only. Ithoughtin20years of democracy that councillors would have fulfilled the commitment of indigent support, but some political parties use thisonly during elections. Dear voter, you must ask these politicians “Where were you for the past five years?” Roy Naidoo

Just one chance

NERESH GAYAPERSHAD

A BIT ABOUT

E

ACH time the clock strikes midnight, one day becomes history and a new one begins. We can't go back, and we can't jump ahead. If you are like me, then you see every “today” as a chance to be all you can be, and to experience an abundance of life.

I don't want to miss out on one thing about each day, but sometimes the forces of the ''dark world'' steal my joy in the present by getting me to regret the past or worry about the future. Have you noticed that sometimes, life tries to ruin our “todays” by bringing up negative things that have happened in the past.? We suddenly, find ourselves remembering every hurt, every offence, every injustice, every mistake and the list goes on! But the fact is, what's happened has happened. You and I can't go back, but we can make sure that the past doesn't ruin

our today. Being human we worry about the future, fearing what hasn't happened yet. All the questions start to flood one's mind: “'What if I lose my job? What if I can't pay my bills? What if the doctor's report is bad?” I have learned each day has enough troubles of it's own, so we should let tomorrow take care of itself! So how then, do we keep from missing out on ''the abundant life in each moment of every day?” Forget the past, stop worrying about the future, and make sure our focus is fixed during the first ten minutes of each new day. Behavioural scientists have discovered

that the first ten minutes is often the most important part of the day. Why? Because the first ten minutes can set the course of the entire day. There’s an old story about a traveller whohikedformanymilesacrossthedesert mountains. His water supply was gone, and he knew that if he didn’t find water soon, he would surely die. In the distance, he noticed an abandoned cabin and hoped to find some water there. Once he made it to the cabin, he discovered an old well. Then he noticed a tin can tied to the pump, with a note inside. The note said: Dear stranger, This water pump is in working condi-

tion, but the pump needs to be primed in order for the water to come out. Under the white rock, I buried a jar of water, out of the sun. There’s enough water in the jar to prime the pump, but not if you drink any first. When you are finished, please fill the jar and put it back as you found it for the next stranger who comes this way. I believe, just like the hiker you and I havetobewillingin life to pour everything we have into the beginning of each new day and prime that day by seizing every second, so that when ''life'' happens, we will be geared for every ticking moment that comes our way.

a temple? IT is with much sadness that I write this letter. It is inconceivable to me that a place of worship can be broken into and vandalised with such total disregard for its sanctity. The temple in question is The Emperumal and Mariammen Temple situated at Lot 14 (Top Shop Area) and its devotees are mostly the poor and indigent.

Vile, despicable human beings broke into the temple, stole the God lamps, light fittings, fans, the carpet that is used by devotees and even cut the electrical cables. The wheels from the chariot have also been stolen. We are now looking for people to assist with fixing the electricity and sponsoring items that the temple requires as the fasting prayers are im-

minent and devotees are left without electricity. Anyone who is able to assist can contact me on 032 552 2014 or 081 257 4710, or call personally at my business premises, Rocky Park Value Centre, 21 Van Der Wagen Drive, Rocky Park, KwaDukuza.

Earnest appeal to cane farmers I MAKE an earnest and impassioned plea to all sugar cane farmers in the lower Tugela area, to stop the practice of burning sugar cane fields before reaping. The past two weeks in particular have been hell for residents of Stanger and its surrounds. With the strong south easterly winds blowing at this time of the year, we are at our wits end. Our yards, pathways, swimming pools, washed cars, curtains, veran-

das, interior floors, clothes on the washing lines etc are being covered in ash. Stanger is a town surrounded by sugar cane plantations.I urge farmers who are conducting farming operationsclosetoStangertothinktwice, before burning their cane, as this is undoubtedly causing heartache for us all, the ratepayers of this town. Be consideratetoothers. Theyalsohavelives. I appeal to the relevant authorities, like the Natal Cane Growers Associa-

tion, to take up this issue as a matter of urgency. A heavy fine should be imposed on offenders. It’s now cane reaping time, the problem will continue unabated, if not nipped in the bud. Come on cane growers, have a heart. Be considerate. Som Mudaly KwaDukuza

THE KwaZulu-Natal legislature passed the Liquor Licensing Amendment Bill, paving the way for the implementation of the KZN Liquor Licensing Act of 2010, which provides for the banning of the sale of liquor by outlets within a 500 metre radius of religious and learning institutions last Thursday. The bill also allows for the sale of liquor on Sundays, a move which has drawn wide criticism from some sectors. IVE armed robbers took an undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones that were on display from the Sundumbili Pep Store on

Thursday last week. According to Sundumbili SAPS media liaison officer, Lieutenant Gideon Mthethwa, the men entered the store at about 4:15pm and took the money from the cashier’s till.

Sundumbili Pep Store manager, Phumzile Mfusi said only one till was working while others were out of order. “The robbers did not even leave a cent. They threatened staff members

with firearms and locked some of them and customers in one of the store rooms. They then forced us to put all the money in a packet.” The robbers then fled the scene. Mfusi said this was the first time the store was robbed and they were still in shock. “As we speak I am at the

hospital. I could not handle what happened.” Mthethwa said the police are investigating the matter. “We urged the public to inform the police if they have any information on the matter. The alleged robbers are believed to be between the ages of 3035.”

Addressing the court, state prosecutor Nomsa Zwane discussed the ill effects of drugs in society and other crimes connected to drug usage which included house break-ins, theft and rob-

Purttasi FOCUS 15 Purtassi festival in South Africa September 20, 2013

FEATURES

WEEKLY

Many generations of Telugu speaking families who relocated to South Africa have kept their culture and traditions alive, which is similar and sometimes not similar to Tamilians SOME South Africans are privileged to have had the chance to learn the Telugu language and understand, write and/or speak Telugu. Purtassi Festival is fasting to please Saturn or Sani Bagavan, one of the nine planets. Saturdays are observed for the worship of Hanuman and Shri Balaji because Saturdays are free from the influences of Saturn and other planetary forces (Grahas). The month of Purtassi (mid September to mid October) is dedicated to the worship of Maha Vishnu (the preserver) who is the absolute symbol of the Transcendent state of Ananda. THE HOLY TRINITY In the Holy Trinity (Trimurthi) of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva, the Preserver is Vishnu. It is the period of the year in which we pay homage to Lord Vishnu. Therefore our worship is thanksgiving to mother nature for preservation. Preservation is a Divine Attribute which embraces many aspects of our life to which we invoke Lord Vishnu as Emperumal, Govinda, Gopala, Venketeswara, Hari Narayana, Balaji, Srinivasa, Runganatha, Ramchandra, etc. It was in the monthofPurtassi,LordVishnuintheform of Sri Venketa Chala Pahi (Balaji) came to earth to guide people and left his form in the Thirupathi Hills in India. Therefore people from all parts of the world flock to India to pay homage to Thirupathi to get a glimpse of the Divine form by taking vows to overcome their problems. At many temples, the Garudan Flag is hoisted on the first day of the month. The Shree Emperumal Hindu Temple does not hoisttheflagonthefirstdayofthemonth because the insignia of Garudan lies per-

manently at the entrance of the Temple. This flag is renewed annually during the Thiruna Festival. However, the first day of the month, Malayppa Swami and his two consorts and Lord Ganesha are taken in procession around the temple to herald this sacred month. Thereafter prayers are held on each Saturday of the month. Special recitals pertaining to Lord Vishnu are conducted from religious books like Garuda Parthu and Thirunaam Padhigam. Devotees hail the phrase: “Govinda, Govinda, Govinda”, after each verse is recited. The Naamam Devotees especially on Saturdays wear the Naamam or the Vaishnavite symbol. Symbolically, the Naamam represents Lord Vishnu’s two feet in his reclined pose – which is represented in the shape of a capital “U” (white). The central stroke represents the Thrishaum (red stroke) – Mother Lutchmee. Why are prayers are observed on Saturdays? Saturdays are observed for the worship of Hanuman and Shri Balaji because SaturdaysarefreefromtheinfluencesofSaturn and other planetary forces (Grahas). In this month planets like Mercury and Ketha influence the earth. Therefore, the worship of Lord Vishnu withdevotionandlovewillhelpustohave a peaceful and happy life with good and obedient children. “Bakthi” is the main theme of all the rituals in the month. Benefits from observing Purtassi. The community becomes united during this period. We must strive at all times to

be united. The restrictions to a vegetarian diet is not only an act of self discipline but this abstinence has profound religious significance, whichhelpsinthepurificationofthebody, mind and soul. It helps to discipline the mind, removes waste and toxins from the body and helps to revitalise the body in its capacity to function well. It further helps the mind to become more alert and reflexes becomes sharper. Devotion to God especially during this Kaliyug period is important. This period which is characteristic of excessive greed forpower, extremehatred, jealousy, anger and intolerance have polluted the life of man in general all over the world. Wemuststrive, seekandmaintainthefollowing virtues: truth, peace, righteousness and non violence. This helps people in directing their thoughts towards God Realisation. Fasting: You have to fast until evening. You can eat after Sun goes down after looking at the sky, my grandmother was one of them who carried this rule out for the entire month. *You can have fruits and milk during the fasting but not cooked food. As I currently fast on Mondays, Poornima. *Avoid onions for whole month. *Pooja:IfpossibleaShivaPoojaissuggested otherwise recitation some Siva Stotrams. *Ensure that Deepam is lit every evening. *People light wicks (Vathulu) 100 or 360countinaSivantempleoranytemple on any auspicious days during the month. Some may recite the Siva Puranam.

A gift of reading NOTHANDO NDLOVU

AFTER Trishen Oojugir completed his practical examinations as a student teacher at Stanger Manor Primary School, he donated over R1000 worth of books to the school. Oojugir, is currently completinghisthirdyearineducation at the UKZNl, Howard College, said the donation was his ‘thank you gift’ for the experience he received at the school. “As an avid reader I decided to give the Stanger Manor pupils the gift of reading,” said Oojugir who enjoys reading fiction books.

Oojugir, who also teaches English, said he noticed that most pupils he taught enjoyed reading. “Instead of organising lunch for the teachers to show my gratitude, I decided to sponsor a good cause which is reading. I am sure it will equip some the pupils with more knowledge.” Principal, Logan Reddy commended the ‘excellent’ work of the student teacher who also studied at the school. “If more people could do the same the education system wouldimproveinthiscountry. We are thankful to Oojugur for the books which will definitely be used by many.”
