>> Stores report good sales for festive season thus far MERVYN KRISHNA

W

ITH Christmas just a few days away, early indications are that KwaDukuza residents are gearing up for a festive celebration. Cash tills are ringing up a sweet tune as most stores also enjoy a bumper season. Stanger SuperSpar, Checkers and Boxer Cash and Carry are some of the stores reporting favourable sales. While the festive season mood is definitely bringing up the cheer, the KwaDukuza SAPS and the KwaDukuza traffic department are cautioning people to enjoy themselves responsibly. Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and arrive alive. KwaDukuza assistant director for traffic, Johnny Moodley, warned drunken drivers that they will be shown no mercy. “Offenders will spend Christmas and New Year’s day in jail while their vehicles will be impounded.” As visitors and tourists pour into KwaDukuza, holidaymakers are urged to swim safely at beaches and heed warnings from lifeguards as well as beach sign posts. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, on behalf of the municipal council and staff, extended season’s greetings and best wishes to

the community and guests who are spending time in KwaDukuza. “For me, Christmas has always been a time for family and friends. An opportunity to take time out from the usual busyness and bustle of life and to spend quality time together, enjoying one another’s company. “As I write this, I am reminded of one of my favourite quotes, by Peg Bracken, which describes those gifts which are most valuable this season: Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas. “And so, I urge myself, not to stress too much about finding the perfect present, but to focus on giving family and friends the gift of my time and affections this Christmas. I urge you to join me in this resolution, and have a truly merry Christmas,” the mayor said. Mthembu added that Christmas may be a happy time for some but can be a difficult and lonely time for many people in the community. “Many families in KwaDukuza are struggling financially, and so Christmas is more of a burden than a joy, and others find themselves alone, or missing loved ones who are no longer here. “I also encourage you to consider the way you can share the gifts of time and love with these people this Christmas. “Perhaps by visiting an elderly

neighbour, inviting someone for dinner who would otherwise be alone, or donating food to the poor. And, may you in doing so, have a wonderful Christmas.” ilembe District mayor Welcome Mdabe also wished the people of iLembe a happy and peaceful Christmas along with a safe and prosperous New Year. “For many in our district, it has been a challenging year particularly for those affected by the floods, the loss of employment and the economic recession. “The heartening aspect of these events is the capacity that the people of iLembe District have in pulling together as a community to help each other out. “Christmas is no exception. It is a time of peace and goodwill, when the spiritual and cultural messages stand tall. We are reminded of the true Christmas message of humility and generosity towards each other,” said Mdabe. The mayor went on to say: “We live in a district that is vibrant and beautiful in every respect. “It is the role of your council to continue to make our district safer and more prosperous whilst respecting our community. “I believe 2014 will see the district move forward and be a place that you will continue to be proud to live in and call home,” he said.

There will be officers carrying out patrols at all beaches under our jurisdiction. “Patrons found with alcohol, which is now prohibited in public areas, will have their alcohol confiscated and will be dealt with accordingly,” said Khumulo. “Vehicle owners must ensure their vehicles are locked at all times and no valuable items such as laptops, cellphones, jewellery or money is left unattended. “Residents who are leaving their homes must inform their neighbours or family members so they will be able to check on their homes daily.” Khumalo appealed to the community to be alert at all times and report any suspicious vehicles, activities or persons to the SAPS on 032 551 8200. Songs dedicated to former SA president and international icon Nelson Mandela were heard from iLembe Auditorium during the Madiba prayer on Wednesday. Director of technical services Notha Maphumulo read Mandela’s obituary and the prayer turned in to a celebration as the ceremony proceeded. SAMWU’s Ravi Vellen spoke about Mandela’s generous spirit. IT might be the school holidays but some pupils from Harry Bodasing Primary School and Lubisana Primary School joined together in a fun holiday event recently. The event was organised by ukuPhakamisa, a local NPO that is fully sponsored by DCLM.

Educational holiday fun Cheryl Wolhuter from ukuPhakamisa, said their aim was to uplift by doing a clean-up of their local beach and picnic area and to educate the pupils at the same time on the environment and sea animals. “The day began with a moment of silence in memory of international icon Nelson Mandela. Then it was off to a brief show on a dead baby shark, which the kids found interest-

HE Mandeni Senior Citizens Club was successfully launched at the Sibusisiwe Community Hall in Sundumbili recently to commemorate the “16 Days” campaign. Speaking at the event, local councillor Nompumelelo Zungu said the 16 Days campaign is aimed at combating abuse and rape of all vulnerable members of society, particularly women, children and the eldery. She urged the youth to respect their elders and visa-versa.

She said that government urges the elderly to live a healthy lifestyle by engaging in sporting activities such as soccer, netball and athletics and not forgetting to jog to keep their bodies healthy and strong. In his address, mayor Siphesihle Zulu lamented the fact that there is a lot to be done to develop people’s lives, stating that senior citizens should lead themselves in order to know what they run short of. “As the council we are encouraging the elders to work as one unit so that they will be able to discuss and solve their problems communally,” he said.

“By this we listen to the residents and citizens of Mandeni and respond to the problems they are facing.” He also urged the senior citizens not to buy stolen goods from the youth as this plays a pivotal role in perpetuating crime. Zulu further asked that senior citizens formulate their own social clubs as these are the right places to discuss challenges such as the rape of elders and children, and drug abuse by the youth. The senior citizens committee that was launched consisted of one member from each ward.

PPF was formed in August and in October was launched in KZN. “We will emulate, preserve and promote the values displayed by Madiba,” added Kubheka. EMINI Motors in KwaDukuza has generously lent KwaDukuza Munici pality lifeguarding services a vehicle to help them keep on top of things for the busy holiday season. Every December /January holiday season for the past eight years Gemini has assisted the lifeguards with this offer. “It is estimated that around 15 000 people are out on our nine beaches each day throughout the holiday season, and our resources are stretched to the limit,” said beach manager Steve Honneysett. He said every municipal vehicle is be ing used to patrol the beaches and to transport staff and equipment. “My company vehicle goes into the pool of these and Gemini has been very generous in loaning us one of their vehi cles,” said Honneysett. “This time of the year we are the busi est service on the coast and all eyes are on us, which is a good opportunity for any business to get some good advertising exposure,” added Honneysett. The vehicle is on loan for a month

Rafiq Adam of ADAMS AUDIO CONCEPTS took first place in the Advance 1 category and also first place overall at the Mandeni Child Welfare Soundoff last weekend. Adams is now the loudest in KwaDukuza, reach ing a whopping 160.9 dbs and currently second loudest in the world at the IASCA world record event held at SIBAYA. Adam says that he is us ing a new product, B2 audio, which requires new designs and parametres and he is currently working towards setting a number one spot in the world next year.

A heart for art LEADING UK fashion designer Henry Holland, who has a heart for art and community, visited art stu dents from Zilungisele Primary School in KwaDuku za last week. Holland first travelled to South Africa in 2012, a year after his friend and international model Agyness Deyn, visited the RedCap Foundation. Last year Henry assisted the Foundation by raising much needed funds for the RedCap schools arts and dance programme called Iciko. Through the sales of his limitededition Tshirt collaboration with Mr Price , the arts and dance classes could be refurbished. His sheer delight in seeing the classroom upgrades for the first time could not be contained. “I saw so many designers in the art class!” said a delighted Holland, while interacting with the grade four to seven learners who joined the design er in creating their own fashion drawings using his printed dresses as a base for figurines. “The creativity of the kids knows no bounds and they’re not constricted in any way, they’re just so excited by everything,” said Holland. “It’s so exciting to be back and to see what the funds from last year’s project has helped build. I hope that the RedCap Foundation continues its amazing work in improving the education standard in South African schools, “ added Holland. Earlier in the year, Mr Price associates from the graphics, visual merchandising and trend depart ments all dedicated a full day to paint beautiful murals to add much needed life and colour into the classrooms. The humble school hall was trans formed into a lively music, dance and drama room and an old classroom into an art centre. “Arts, drama, dance and music is not such a high priority in most low income community schools so it was wonderful to be a part of creating a space that allows children to be inspired and cre ative,” said Mr Price associate Lorraine Parkes.

Only you can bring your BEST PRIYA NUNKUMAR YOUNG, WISE, FREE

H

anging out with a group of peo ple can make us feel comfortable, but is it allowing you to bring out the “real” you? Sometimes when we hang out or join a group of friends, we begin to lose our own identity as we adapt to the group’s identity.

NERESH GAYAPERSHAD IT’S kind of funny to keep watching people who want things to come easy to them in life. Many other people know of this tendency among human beings, so they keep selling them diet pills that let them eat whatever they want, job information that will make them rich with no effort, college “degrees” that require no study at all, and many other “easy” fixes to their problems and easy fulfillment of their desires. But over and over again these people who want the easy ways out are disappointed, for what they hoped and expected would help them, simply has left them still faced with their problems and now with a little less money in their pockets. Saying that “nothing comes easy” isn’t at all defeatist or cynical. It’s a fact that’ s been proved over and over in life, as major scientific breakthroughs come after years and years of research and hard work; financial stability comes after years of sacrifice and effort; great movies and albums are made with the most effort and practice and planning and preparation. Colonel Sanders had to visit over 100 restaurants before he sold his recipe for fried chicken, and that came after years of perfecting that recipe. Richard Bach received over 70 rejections for Jonathan Liv-

What the “ group” may want to do, isn’t always our plan of action, yet we follow the plan because we want to belong to that group. Following friends can sometimes change our likes, dislikes, habits and responsibilities, so we have to de cide where to draw the line. Nobody else can decide how you can be the best you want to be, be sides you. Whether it is a best friend, group of friends or girlfriend or boyfriend, we should still remember our

own identity is important and we shouldn’t just become known as some body’s friend or somebody’s partner. To develop your own identity, it is important to have a good understand ing of yourself as a person, know about your personality and character, how to build it and improve it and how to broaden your knowledge by concentrat ing on hobbies you as a person like, not your group of friends. Nobody said that spending some quali ty time by yourself means that you have no friends; in fact all of us should

indulge in some “me” time and learn more about ourselves and our interests. Some people rate friendships too highly, which could prove to be their downfall, because sometimes friends can lead you down the wrong path, or influence you to such an extent that you lose the “real” you in the process. I’m sure there is nothing worse than having someone who you regard as a “friend” be the one to bring you down and change your whole world around. Remember in future to always be

yourself and focus on you, because nobody else in the world has the power to make or break you, besides you. So be yourself, make yourself strong and always bring out your best to deal with everything that life can throw at you. Have a story for me on how you brought out the best in yourself? Or how somebody stopped you from bringing out the best in yourself? Email me at Priya.nunkumar@gmail.com and tell me your story!

Want it badly? WORK FOR IT

A bit about

ingston Seagull, and that was after all the time and effort it took him to write the book. Thomas Edison, the light bulb inventor, made over 3000 attempts before he finally found the perfect formula to invent a light bulb that actually worked! History is full of examples of great successes and great results after a lot of effort and time. There are, of course, the exceptions - those people who have found success almost immediately, with almost no work involved. But they truly are the exceptions rather than the rule. And that type of success rarely is lasting, either. When we remind ourselves that nothing truly worthwhile comes easy, we can face our obstacles and problems remaining calm and undisturbed, and we can be much more calm in the face of setbacks. When we know that it’s going to take time and work to reach a goal, we’ re much more likely to accept delays as necessary elements of the process, and we’re much more likely to see obstacles as learning opportunities rather than back-breakers. Keeping in mind that nothing comes easy, we can give our best effort because we know that it’s that effort - as well as the time involved - that’s going to craft a fine finished product.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Reason to rejoice THE year started with many talking, with some ‘surprise’, that we made it to 2013 (reference to the Mayans believingthattheworldwasgoingtoend in 2012). The year for many has brought tons of successes and good news while others were on the other end of the spectrum. We, at the Weekly, were proud to share these emotions with you. The Weekly saw many changes this year and we would like to thank you for graciously welcoming us into your homes. Ourkeyfocusfor2013wastofocus more on YOU - sharing your experiences and stories with other residents. While there are a number of highlights, personally and as a nation, the death of former president Nelson Mandela has shadowed everything else - and rightfully so. Madiba definitely left us with a legacy worth celebrating and the sad news has united the citizens of this country that he loved so much. Wishing all a wonderful and safe festive season. Lots of good wishes from Team Weekly

Remembering Madiba’s legacy

N

ELSON Mandela has departed to join Chief Albert Luthuli, Oliver Tambo, Lillian Ngoyi, Yusuf Dadoo and other warriors who never surrendered princi ples, moral values and ethics. Mandela was a member of the league with Luthuli, Patrice Lumumba, Amilcar Cabral, Augostinoh Neto, Fi del Castro, Eloef Palmer, Julius Nyerere, Martin Luther King and Lenin. While it is important to sing songs to this hero, to write poems and create slogans around his services to the peo ple, we must never portray him as a saint, a warning or caution that Dennis Goldberg, Ahmen Kathrada and George Bizos always remind us of. Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Matthew Meyi wa, Zakhele Mdlalose, Wilton Mkwayi spent a long time in jail to set us free. Theseaccusedwhoweresentencedatdifferenttimes by an apartheid state were able to convince the “old guard” of Luthuli, Moses Kotane, Dadoo, Ismail Meer and others that the time has come to adopt another tactic, the taking up of arms to defend our people in the same way Kings Cetshwayo, Bambatha, Sekhukhuni, Mzilikazi,

Blessed to be born in the era of a giant GOD gave SA Mabida because He knew that only pure greatness can extricate this country from the shackles of an unjust system. Your resilience and unwavering determination in the face of adversity has earned you the title of the son of Africa and icon of the world. I am blessed to be born in an era knowing that a giant

Moshoeshoe, Hintsa, Luka Jantjie, Galeshewe did before 1912. After the sentencing of Rivonia trialists, Chief Luthuli referred to them as “brave men”. The push for an armed struggle came mainly from the youth, SACTU and SACP which had been banned in 1950 through the Suppression of Communism Act. It is under Chief Albert Luthuli that mass struggles like consumer boycotts, stayaways, banning of “dompass es”,rentboycott, closingdownofbeerhallsandultimate ly the Defiance Campaign of 1952. Mandela was a chief volunteer in the Defiance Cam paign and became a chief volunteer in the armed as first chief commander of MK. The mass struggle also gave birth to SACTU, Congress of Democrats, Coloured Peo ple’s Congress, Federation of South African Women and the Freedom Charter. The triumvirate of Mandela, Sisulu and Tambo was a layer of leadership to take ANC into new heights. Today, they are the mirror that we use in evaluating the leader ship that we have today. Blessed are peace makers. Mandela was militant but

disciplined. EvenattheRivoniatrialhedidnotinsultjudges. While he was a lawyer by profession, he was not a theoretician like Govan Mbeki, Michael Harmel, Joe Matthews, Slovo and others, he lacked deeper understanding of HIV/AIDS and agenda of pharmaceutical companies whose main agenda is to profit from this endemic and using Africans as guineapigs in research. As we immortalise Madiba we must understand him in the context of the collective leadership and as an ordi nary human being who is fallible like me and you. He passedonatatimewhensocietybattleswithmanychal lenges including attack on our moral values. For the past four weeks and on the day he passed on, some in the ANC were throwing stones at the Public Protector like sinners who stoned Stephen in the Bible. They want to create a state of thieves which services their greed than people. Mandela, a member of the ANC belongs to all of us especially South Africans who are combatants against corruption, sexism, racism and xenophobia. Siyanda Mhlongo

and legend of the century has walked on this earth. As South Africans celebrate the remarkable legacy of one of the greatest men born in this world, we need to advocateandreinforcehisteachings of acorrup tion free nation. As we move into the future without Tata, let us be confident knowing that his teachings and status as a liberation struggle hero globally will live on forever. Madiba, you mentioned thatyouentrust the remain ing years of your life to the people of South Africa. Your work on this earth is done. You have laid the foundation and building blocks

for all South Africans to embrace your ideals of a free, nonracial democratic country. As a country and nation we can never allow the sacri fices you made and your ideals and aspirations to be in vain. God has blessed South Africa with an abundance of mineral resources such as iron ore, coal and gold but the greatest blessing God was the legend Nelson Rolih lahla Mandela. You have stated Tata that: “When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace.” Hamba kahle Madiba. Vijay Surujpal

Party slaps minorities THE DA’s recent support of the Employment Equity Bill is a slap in the face for minority groups namely Indians and Whites. The Employment Equity Bill that was formulated some 20 years ago for the purpose of bringing about equity in the workplace, although controversial, has served its purpose. Twenty years into democracy, there is no need for such a Bill as employees should be employed according to their knowledge, capabili ty, experience and expertise. It is common knowledge to all South Africans that the country has lost many talented academics at the workplace due to being sidelined through the Em ployment Equity Bill. Many have immigrated and settled in foreign lands, leaving the country with a shortage of skilled employees.

Grieving for Madiba

Ironically, the ANC imports many professionals into South Africa, while our South Africans leave the country. The Employment Equity Bill has robbed many In diansof jobopportunitiesandultimatelytheirmone tary worth. Many individualsintheworkplacearedemotivated as junior employees, who are lesser qualified, become bosses of long serving experienced employees. The DA support of the Employment Equity Bill is a clear indication of the lack of understanding of the needs of the minority communities. ThisisonemorereasonwhytheMinorityFronthas a place in the modern South African democracy. The MF is the only voice of the minority community.

it was always my sincere passion to meet Madiba one day, I plead pover ty that this wish was in vain. But I did have the honour and privilege of writing to Mandela and his administrative sec retary acknowledged with thanks the receipt of my letter. He also mentioned that the president had noted the content of my letter. I, as an ordinary member of the Stanger and District Associa tion for the Aged, hope to view the film ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ soon, based on life and strug gle of Madiba. As a shared receiver of the Nobel Prize and numer ous accolades, I admire mosthisgenuineability to forgive and accept his oppressors. Dear Madiba, I am sure your good soul will rest in peace continue to protect our country and its rainbow nation. Billy V Peter

apprehensive to participate in the activities, but eventually gained confidence and began enjoying thenselves. “They participated in a number of activities including a treasure hunt and had fun playing on the jumping castle. They were given a

gift pack at the end of the party. We are grateful to the Bhakti Marga family, the Child Welfare SA KwaDukuza, the sponsors and most important of all these lovely children for affording us the priviledge and opportunity to put a smile on their faces. We certainly
