It is alleged that the fights began during a traditional ceremony and continued during school hours at Ukukhanyakwezwe High School.

A study by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention indicates that there is an 'alarming' increase in school violence.

According to the study 22.2 percent of high school pupils had been subjected to some form of violence from a sample of almost 6 000 pupils, 121 principals and 239 teachers.

HE murder of a prominent local taxi boss and another KwaDukuza Taxi Association member in Groutville last Thursday has led to a flare up of violence in KwaDukuza.

Taxi boss Dennis Mhlongo (48) and his driver Khulekani Mdletshe (25) were gunned down on the R102 allegedly by Dolphin Coast Taxi Association members.

Threesuspectswerearrestedhours later in Prospecton, Durban by the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team.

Dodo Justice Mthethwa (50), Mbhekiseni Luthuli (27) from Groutville and Mthunzi Mathenjwa (29) from Clairmont appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Monday and were not asked to plead.

They were charged with two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The trio were remanded in custody and will make a formal bail application tomorrow (Thursday).

When arrested, the suspects were foundinpossessionoftwoR5riflesand one revolver.

It is alleged that at approximately 8am - last Thursday - Mhlongo, Mdlet-

she and three other members of the KwaDukuza Taxi Association were travelling in a Polo Playa in Groutville when they were accosted by eight men at gunpoint.

The suspects forced them out of their vehicle and told them to lie on the ground. The two deceased men did as they were told while the other three managed to escape, unharmed.

Mhlongo and his driver were then shot and died instantly at the scene.

Police found more than 50 spent cartridges at the crime scene.

Dolphin Coast Taxi association PRO officer Mdu Tony said: “The taxi boss, his driver and the three others - who were members of the KwaDukuza Taxi Association - had previously attacked about eight Dolphin Coast Taxi Association members, who retaliated and killed the two men.

“The reason for the violence is that KwaDukuza are still fighting with us over taxi routes,” said Tony.

In a statement the Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison said the shooting was linked to “running tensions” between the KwaDukuza and Dolphin Coast Taxi Associations.

This tension is a result of the association fueding over taxi routes between Ballito, KwaDukuza and Tongaat.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the murders and asked the two associations to start “peaceful engagements”.

“This incident is unacceptable as it undermines the progress that has been made by government in addressing taxi conflict in the area,” he said.

“We have dispatched a team from our public transport unit to work with law enforcement agencies and engage all affected parties.”

Mchunu sent his condolences to the families of the two men.

SAPS provincial commissioner lieutenant general Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended members of the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team for the early breakthrough in the investigation.

“It is unacceptable that people can be gunned down so callously with no regard for the life of another human being.

“We are confident that the remaining suspects will be brought to book and we will ensure that they are punished for their crimes,” she said.

The SAPS provincial media centre said the motive for the killing is unknown, pending police investigation.

The docket has been assigned to the The Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team for investigations.

WO unemployed parents who attempted to register their children for grade seven for the next school year, at Glenhills Secondary School have said it is unethical that parents are being asked to pay

admission fees in order to obtain place for their children.

However a Glenhills Secondary insider said even though the school is a government school, parents are required to pay school fees as it is a fee paying school.

Lalitha Misra, an unemployed parent of two, said that the Glenhills principalaskedhertorenderservices totheschoolsinceshecouldnotafford the R900 school fee.

He allegedly told her that the money she earned from rendering services to the school would go towards the fees she was unable to pay.

“I haven’t been paying fees at the primary school, but to my amazement I’ve been told there is no free education at Glenhills Secondary School. This is unethical because I would have to work from 8am to 3pm at the school and I could use this time to look for another job. I have never heard of such a thing before.”

According to Misra, if she does not do as she was told; her child will not have a school to attend next year.

Another mother, Resh Singh was asked to pay an admission fee of R450 also at Glenhills Secondary School by the end of the year.

“Last week we were issued with a notice to enrol our kids and pay a R450 admission fee.

“Someparentswereadvisedtoapply for exemptions as they cannot afford the school fees and were asked to cometotheschoolonSaturday,12October to seek exemption from the schoolprincipalaswellasthegoverning body.

“Adifferentstorytranspiredthere.

I have already enrolled my child and paid the stipulated 50% school fees. I think it is unfair that another parent who was seeking admission was told that there is no free education.”

She said Glenhills is a low income area and people do not have money to pay the admission fees.

“In this township, more than 50% ofhouseholdsarerunonsocialgrants alone. The full school fee is R900

which most parents cannot afford,” she said.

According to the South African Schools Act, a public school must admitpupilsandservetheireducational requirements without unfairly discriminating in any way.

It further states that no pupil may be refused admission to a public school on the grounds that his or her parent is unable to pay or has not paid the school fees determined by the governing body under Section 39.

It also states that no public school may charge any registration, administration, or other fee on the application for admission and if the parent has submitted an application for admission before the given deadline, clearly stated reasons for non-admission must be provided.

This is a requirement in terms of section five of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (2000).

With regards to re-registration, the process is simply an administrative task which serves to assist with planning for the next year.

It is believed that some schools level 'threats' that if the current school fees are not paid in full pupils will not be issued with re-registration forms.

This conduct by the school is also unlawful according to the Act. The insider at Glenhills secondary explainedthatthe‘no-fee’schoolsare only those which are situated in ‘rural’ areas where there are ‘many unemployed people’.

Hesaidparentsarerequiredtopay a small amount towards the following year’s fees and not registration fees.

“We wrote letters to parents and those who cannot afford to pay were requested to apply for exemptions.

We channel the communication via children.”

He added that the School Act stipulates that parents who cannot afford to pay school fees should render services to the school for a day.

He made it clear that the school is not exploiting anybody, but just following the rules set by the department. They must not think that the school is not being compassionate.

We are the lowest paying school in terms of fees in the area.”

KZN Department of Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi said the decision to pay the admission fees is made by parents and members of the school governing body (SGB).

“A principal will not solely decide on the admission fee. If the school is a fee paying one then parents are required to pay the admission fee as decided by the SGB together with parents.

“If parents encounter problems they must direct their queries to their local district or circuit office,” said Mahlambi.

The Weekly contacted local government schools to find out their admission/re-admission fee amounts: Stanger Manor Secondary charged R1 000, Glenhills Primary charged R300, Darnall Secondary charged R400 and Tshelenkosi Secondary charged R400.

The Weekly was told that parents agreed on the amounts to pay for the upcoming year.

Still no protection

DEMOCRATIC Alliance PR councillor is yet to be assigned a bodyguard by the KwaDukuza Municipality, seven months after the crime intelligence unit (CIU) recommended the council do so.

In documents seen by the Weekly, the initial recommendation was made by the specialised policeunitinApril,statingcouncillorThokozani Gumede met the minimum requirements to be provided with “security guards”, but by September the council had yet to act on the recommendation.

The municipality confirmed last week that they had decided this month to assign Gumede with the security detail “in terms of council’s close protection policy” and that he must visit the council to formalise the decision.

But Gumede is furious and believes the council, led by the ANC, has purposely delayed ap-

proving his security simply because he is a member of an opposition party.

“They would never have taken this long if it was one of their [ANC] councillors. The delay was an obvious attempt to frustrate me. I have yet to be informed officially about the decision taken. I have only heard about it from others.

From what I gather they want to assign me one guard, when the SAPS clearly recommended it in the plural,” said Gumede.

In an e-mail sent to Gumede by the council’s municipal manager Nhlanhla Mdakane on September 10, Mdakane said the municipality had “resolved not to provide security” on the count that the municipality “sees no immediate threat”.

The SAPS report is “highly contradictory” andthatthefinancialimplicationsofappointing bodyguards cannot be deemed “justifiable to the ratepayers of KwaDukuza”, it added.

Gumede opened a case with the KwaDukuza police in March under the charge “conspiracy to commit murder”, the basis of his meeting the minimum requirement.

He said he has received threats to him and his family and since April has paid for his own security detail and moved from his home in Doringkop. Gumede said he is being “targeted” because he is “talking to the media” and “exposing corrupt activities” within the council related to local housing projects, the overpayment for services and non-delivery of projects.

The council says they have “recently” resolved to appoint him a bodyguard and that Gumede needs to just make it official.

KwaDukuza Municipality director of communications Sifiso Zulu said: “After consultation with relevant parties, [it was agreed] Gumede be assigned bodyguards in terms of council’s close protection policy.”

He said council has no constant figure on what it spends on security, but that he would not be able to reveal who, and how many guards are assigned, to political leaders as it “constitutes a breach of security”.

Now Gumede believes the council should reimbursehimforwhathehasspentonpaying for his own security.

“It is costing about R15 000 a month and I have been using my savings to pay for this service.”

DA provincial leader Sizwe Mchunu said the delays in providing Gumede security is an attempt to frustrate the party in the run up to the 2014 national general election.

New Clinic for Maphumulo residents

NOTHANDO NDLOVU A NEW clinic was officially opened in Ma­ phumulo by KZN MEC for Health Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo last Tuesday.

An estimated 17 000 people will use this clinic.

The clinic was constructed to accom­ modate the influx of outpatients from the Umphumulo Hospital.

Before the construction of the clinic people were attended to in a small build­ ing.

It was reported that during the last

The first arrest was made at Sundumbili Plaza on Tuesday when police spotted two suspects acting suspiciously.

The suspects then arrested and charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

According to police her boyfriend, Bheki Sibisi has been arrested in connection with the crime.

Lindiwe Ngwenya went missing at the beginning of October.

KwaDukuza SAPS inspector Fishy Nai­ doo questioned her partner extensively

without success.

However, when Naidoo told him that they had his blood samples from the crime scene Sibisi confessed to the killing.

He apparently said he used a rope to strangle her and dumped her body in the nearby river.

Sibisi was arrested and charged for mur­ der. He appeared in the KwaDukuza Magis­ trate’s Court and was not asked to plead.

Sibisi was remanded in custody.

MERVYN KRISHNA FORMER KwaDukuza resident Rishaad Singh returned to his hometown after 25 years - this time as the Sheriff of the High and Lower Court.

Singh officially took up his post on 1 October - a position which he was acting in since December last year.

Singh was born in Glendale and attended the Parukhbud Primary and Stanger Manor Secondary Schools. He later moved to Verulam where he completed his matric at Mountview Secondary School.

Singh started his career in 1997 as an administration clerk in the sheriff’s office in Pinetown. Six months later, he was promoted to deputy sheriff.

He holds a NQF Level five qualification in Law Enforcement: Sheriffing and is currently studying towards an auctioneering qualification.

Speaking to the Weekly, Singh said sheriffs have an important role in the justice system as they act as a third

SELF EXAMINATION What is a Breast Self-Examination (BSE)?

Breast self­examination is a procedure performed by an individual to physically and visually examine herself for any changes in the breasts and underarm areas of the body.

Therefore, BSE should not be used in place of, but in addition to, clinical breast ex­ amination and mammography.

In the shower: While tak­ ing a shower (or bath), ex­ plore the breast and un­ derarm areas with your fin­ gertips. Raise one arm and place your hand at the back of your head. Slowly and methodi­ cally, move the pads of your fingertips over the breast in a circular pattern.

Don't forget to feel the armpit area.

Repeat on the other breast with your opposite hand.

By doing BSE regularly, you get to know how your breasts normally feel so that you are more apt to detect any change.

Women should start breast self­examina­ tionat20yearsoldandcontinuethepractice throughout their lives ­ even during pregnan­ cy and after menopause.

Breast self­examination should be per­ formed every month.

Become familiar with how your breasts

usually look and feel so that you will notice any changes from what is normal for you. >> If you still menstruate, the best time to do BSE is several days, or about a week, after your period ends. In front of a mirror: Raise your arms above your head to check for changes in size, shape and contour of each breast. Look for puckering, dimpling or changes in skin texture. Gently squeeze both nipples and look for dis­ charge.

This illustration shows you how to check each breast. Begin at point A and follow the arrows, feeling for a lump or thickening. Remem­ ber to feel all parts of each breast. Most lumps are not cancer­ ous, but if you find one, you should get it checked by a doctor immediately.

Lying down: Lie down with you arm tucked behind your head. With the other hand and with your fingers flat­ tened, feel the opposite breast.

Underarm area: Begin in the un­ derarm area and move your fingers down until they are below the breast. Move your fingers in toward the centre and go slowly back up.

Cover the whole area, going up and down. With your arm resting on a firm surface, use the same motion to examine the underarm.

Does a patient need to lose her breast/s?

NO. It has been proven in large overseas studies that a mastectomy (removal of the breast) offers no survival benefit, when compared with treatment that removes only the lump.

What if the lump is too big?

There is a strong possibility that some cancer cells have already found their way via the blood stream to other parts of the body (bone, lung or liver).

These cancer cells that went astray (micro-metastasis)cannotalwaysbedetected with the available tests such as xrays and scans. With a large tumour there is more than a 70% chance of micro-metastasis. Systemic treatment (chemotherapy ± hormonal therapy) should then be administered to shrink the tumour and at the same time kill the cells outside the boundaries of the breast. If the tumour has shrunk sufficiently, it can be removed with good cosmetic results - resulting in far less trauma and mutilation for the patient.

Mammograms are essential What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a low­dose breast X­ray that can de­ tect cancer in the breast even before a lump is felt. It is currently the best method of detec­ tion.

How is a mammogram done?

When a woman has a mammo­ gram, she stands next to the x­ray machine and a ra­ diologist helps to place her breast between two compression plates (plastic trays) which flat­ ten the breast while the X­ray is taken. The plates are used to com­ press the breast to a thickness of about 4­6cm.

More compression requires less radia­ tion and the bet­ ter the image pro­ duced. It may be a little uncomfort­ able for a while, but the procedure is well worth it.

Who should have a mammogram?

For woman over 50 a mammo­ gram should be done every one ­ two years (Euro­ pean recommen­ dation). The American Cancer Association rec­ ommends yearly mammograms from the age of 40.

HE time of Diwali is one of the most festive and beautiful timesoftheyear.Diwaliliterallymeansa"RowofLights."

It is a time filled with light and love, a time when Hin­ dus all over the world rejoice.

Diwali is celebrated on the thirteenth/fourteenth day in the dark half of Kartik (October ­ November); it is also known as Krishna Chaturdashi.

It is the darkest night of the darkest period, yet it is a cele­ bration of light! Diwali is heralded as the triumph of good over evil. Diwalisymbolsandrituals,andthereasonsforcelebration are innumerable.

Diwali celebrates Lord Rama's glorious and long­awaited return to his Kingdom of Ayodhya after his fourteen long years of exile in the forests.

It commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakaasura who had kidnapped and terrorised the gopis of Vrindavan.

WhentheevilNarakawasfinallykilledbyBhagwanKrishna and Satyabhaama, he begged pitifully for mercy, thus, upon his entreaties, it was declared that this day of his death would be celebrated with great joy and festivity. It is also celebrated

Diwali is also associated with the story of the fall of Bali ­ademonkingwhowasconqueredbyLordVishnu.LordVishnu appeared to the demon king Bali in the form of a dwarf and requested only three steps of land. The evil and egotistic Bali granted the dwarf's meager request of only three feet. Sud­ denly, Lord Vishnu took on His grand size and placed one foot on the earth, another on the Heavens and His third on the head of the evil Bali.

In general, Diwali signifies the triumph of good over evil, of righteousness over treachery, of truth over falsehood, and of light over darkness.

WEEKLY THERE are three main as­ pects of Diwali. The first is the celebration of light.

We line our homes andstreetswithlanterns, we burst fireworks, chil­ dren play with sparklers.

However, Diwali is not a festival of light in order that we may burn can­ dles, fireworks and spar­ klers.

Sure, these are won­ derful ways of expressing our gaiety. But, they are not the only or true meaning of "light."

Diwali is a festival of the light which dispels the darkness of our igno­ rance ­ it is a festival of the light which shows us the way on our journey through life.

The purpose is not to glorify the light of the candle, or the light of the firecracker.

The purpose is to glo­ rify the light of God. It is He who bestows the real light, the ever­ lasting light upon the darkness of this mun­ dane world. A candle burns out. A firework is a momentary visual expe­ rience. But, the candle of a still mind and the fire­ works of a heart filled withbhaktiaredivineand eternal; these are what we should be celebrating.

We decorate our homes with clay lamps, but why? What is the symbolism behind that?

Those lamps signify God's light, penetrating through the ignorance and sin of our daily lives.

Theysignifythedivine light, shining its way through this mundane world. A home bathed in light is a home in which anger, pain, and igno­ rance are being dispelled; it is a home that is calling to God. However, too many peopleturnthisintoado­ mestic beauty contest, spending days and a great deal of money to purchase the newest di­ yas, the most beautiful candles. "We had 75 can­ dles burning last night," we gloat.

This is only the light of glamour. It is not the light of God, and thus the true meaning of the holiday is lost…

The light of Diwali should be within us. It should symbolise the personal relationship be­ tween God and our fami­ lies.

It should not be so we attract attention from passing cars, or so we are the envy of the neighbor­ hood.

Let the light pene­ trate inward, for only there will it have lasting benefit.

One piece of cotton soaked in ghee, lit with a pure heart, a conscious mind and an earnest de­ sire to be free from igno­ rance is far "brighter" than 100 fashion deep­ aks, lit in simple uncon­ scious revelry.

The month of Kartika

DURING this month of Kartika (commenced on the 18 October and will end on the 17 No­ vember) in Vrindavana, India it is the regula­ tive principle to pray daily to Lord Krsna in his Damodar form.

The Damodar form refers to Krsna in His childhood when he was tied up with ropes by his mother Yashoda. Dama means “ropes” and Udara means “the Abdomen”.

So mother Yashoda, being very disturbed by naughty Krsna, bound him round the abdo­ men with a rope, and thus Krsna is named Damodara.

Hari Bhakti Vilasa states: Kartika is the bestofmonths.“Kartikaisalwaysdeartothe Vaishnavas. O great sage, a Vaishnava who with devotion serves Kartika delivers his an­ cestors from hell”. If we are interested in de­

livering our ancestors, then observe Kartika.

As everyone knows Lord Damodara loves devotees. It goes both ways, it’s not that we are just serving Krsna trying to attract him, but he also is attracted by our service.

The month of Kartika is a personality just like the holy name is a person and the deity is the personality. Doing something very small in the month of Kartika is multiplied by a thousand times. Lord Krsna is pleased by the offering of a single lamp during the month of Kartika. Lord Krsna glorifies any­ one who lights a lamp for someone else to offer. The clay lamp is our heart and the ghee around it is our Prema (love) and the burning lamp is our Bhava. Bhava means our senti­ ment, our mood and our emotion. THE Shakaskraal and Districts Diwali Festival 2013 will take place over two days from Friday 25 October and Saturday 26 October.

This year’s festival promises to be even bigger than last year’s with an event-packed two days.

The Diwali festival celebrations take place at the Shakaskraal Secondary School ground with a theme of “Vasudhaiva Kuymbakam”, meaning ‘The World is One Family’.

Festival organisers have added an extra day to the event this year and will be introducing new features as well as incorporating the best of the previous festival.

Public relations officer, Dooshie Govender said Friday will see the annual community Hawan take place withlocalleadersandpunditsfromdifferent Hindu temples and organisations.

“One hundred hawan kunds will be prepared with devotees of the community invited to take part in this selfless contribution. In addition there will be offerings of prayer for health, peace and prosperity.”

On Saturday evening there will be a large fireworks display lighting up the Shakaskraal skyline this will be supported by the Pravesh Sunker Show Band (Radio Hindvani).

With the weather hold­ ing up cupcakes were flying of the tables in aid of fund raising for the Dolphin Coast Hos­ pice Association (DCHA).

This further tells us the ANC led municipalities are committed in addressing the issue of skill shortages that fasces the country. When these municipalities implement such programs, they are doing it in memory and honor of our fallen Heroes/Heroines, in Mandeni municipality they honor the likes of the late Israel Maseko, Cannan Shandu, Cllr. Ngonyama and Sikiza, Lindiwe Shabalala, Dudu Mbatha, Cebo Mfekayi, Nhlakanipho Msomi, KwaDukuza following the same suit for its fallen Heroes/Heroines the likes of V2 Sibiya, Patrick Mbambo, General Gizenga, Chief AJ Luthuli, Mashaba, Preva Khumalo, Nonhlanhla Mlotha, Bonga Zungu, Kenny Naidoo, D.R. ANOR Primary clinched the Shivendra Velan Memorial Six-a-Side Cricket Knockout Cup after trouncing Dawnview by five-wickets in the final played at Manor on Wednesday.

The hosts were in for a rude awakening in their semi-final clash against Lee Primary of Darnall. Lee skipper, Phumlani Khuzwayo elected to bat first after winning the toss.

Lee openers Khuzwayo and Lethu frustrated the Manor bowlers putting on 12 runs in the first four overs. In

the fifth and final over, Khuzwayo showed scant respect for Manor’s rising cricket star, Alex Pillay smashing the fast bowler for four boundaries to take their tally to 29/0.

After being punished by the Lee opener, Pillay returned the favour, smashing the first five deliveries to the boundary to give the hosts a commanding 20/0 at the end of the first over.

Manor needed just four balls to send Lee crashing out of the tournament thanks to Pillay who scored a “quickfire” 26 runs which included six fours.

In the second semi-final, KwaDukuza Primary lost the toss and were asked to bat first against arch-rivals Dawnview.

KwaDukuza Primary were restricted to 25/2 in their allotted 5overs with Mayuren Logenathan scoring an unbeaten 21 runs which included two fours and a huge six.

Nqubeko Luthuli bowled a maiden wicket over before receiving good support from Yusuf Khan who grabbed 1/0 from one over.

KwaDukuza Primary were sent crashing out of the tournament thanks to some sloppy bowling and

fielding which comprised of more than 11 runs. Dawnview raced to an emphatic five-wickets victory with two overs to spare.

In the final, Manor won the toss and asked Dawnview to bat first.

The visitors posted 25/4 in their allotted 5-overs. Keanin Sattiah (10) top-scored for Dawnview. Jaden Pillay was the destroyer-in-chief for Manor claiming 2/4 from 2 overs.

Basketball champs Mbozamo crowned KZN U13 basketball champions

BOZAMO Primary School boys were ecstatic after being crowned KwaZulu-Natal under-13 basketball champions in the Provincial Schools Festival at the Old Mutual Sports Hall in Durban.

The winning school from each of the 12 municipal districts converged at the Old Mutual Sports Hall on Friday 11 October to participate in the three-day festival.

Mbozamo representing Ilembe District were grouped alongside Addington Primary of Umlazi, Sizumphakathi Primary of Zululand, Phikelela Primary of Amajuba and Isiqophamithi of Uthukela in Pool A. Mbozamo kicked off their campaign with a hard fought 9-8 win against Sizumphakathi. With the win under their belts, Mbozamo turned on the heat in their second fixture of the tournament, romping to a fluent 34-0 win against Isiqophamithi.

They notched up a hat-trick of victories after hammering the powerful Amajuba District representatives, Phikelela(38-4)tovirtuallybooktheir place in the final.

Theywrappeduptheirround-robin matches with thrilling 16-14 win against Addington Primary to finish at the top of pool A. The powerful Addington outfit, who lost to Ilembe in the round-robin matches on Saturday came back strongly in the final on Sunday to take an early 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Durban-based Addington lads enjoying a huge support base extended their lead (9-5) at halftime.

The Mbozamo team Mbozamo’s hopes of repeating their victory against Addington virtually vanished at the end of the 3rd quarter after they were trailing 6-9.
