Elderly woman brutally murdered [4]

Be an ACTIVIST everyday MEC encourages fighting against abuse throughout the year NOTHANDO NDLOVU

School's out Matrics

EING active in fighting the scourge of women and children abuse should not only be done during the 16 Days of Activism but throughout the year.” This was KZN MEC for Sports and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha’s message at the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children launch, held at the iLembe Auditorium on Monday. Sibhidla-Saphetha addressed hundreds of elderly citizens. The official launch began with a visit to the homes of two raped victims from New Guelderland and Madundube. Sibhidla-Saphetha was accompanied by iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe, deputy mayor DollyShandu,KwaDukuzamayorRicardo Mthembu and KZN co-operative governance and traditional affairs (COGTA) head of department Nonhlanhla Qoboshiyane. The first visit was to a 29-year-old disabled woman from New Guelderland who was repeatedly raped by her 40 year-old relative. The delegation heard that the rapist threatened the family forcing them to withdraw the charges. However, they could not as it was already at regional court level.

It was officially pens down for thousands of mat ric pupils around the country as they wrapped up their English paper three on Monday. Hugs and colour were the order of the day outside Stanger Manor Secondary School where the pupils gathered. While Sumeshan Naicker, Menka Laldas, Rene Yenkatiah, Kyle Samuel, Suhi na Ramkissoon, Trisha Rajah, Deb bie Rajamoney and many others pre pare for their mat ric dance, exams only officially end on Friday. She said there were many governmental programmes aimed at fighting the abuse of elderly citizens. SibhidlaSaphetha encour

aged the elderly to exercise so that they can maintain a healthy lifestyle. Three nongovernmental organisations Umvini wokuphila, Nduduzweni and Multi skills each received a cheque worth R2000. “The money that is being handed over here was made from selling these white rib bons. It’s not a lot but it will definitely add valuetothelivesofsomeofourpeople”,said Mthembu. iLembe District Municipality will contin ue with their gender violence awareness campaigns around the district until the end of the 16 days.

KwaDukuza SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigating officer Christina Subraylu, who was present during the visit, said they were not happy with the sentence the rapist received. She said the rapist who impregnated the 29yearold was handed a 10 year suspend ed sentence despite the fact that there was DNA proof that he was the father of the child. An angry Mdabe explained that he was nothappywiththesen tence. He said they will make submissions to the National Prosecut ing Authority (NPA) so that the case is reo pened. “This person made a plea bargain and he and his lawyer took ad vantage of an indigent family. He said he would pay R1 000 a month for mainte nanceandhasn’tpaida cent. We can’t allow for SEE ADVERT ON PAGE 15,16,17,18 this to happen. According to the father, who spoke on the conditionofanonymity, itwasnotthefirsttime that the pupil had been bullied at school. “Two weeks ago a bunch of older boys took him from the classroom while the teacher was not in class, shoved his face in the toilet and then took all his money. “AsaparentIfeltlikekillingalltheboys who traumatisedmyson. However,Iamhappythat justice has taken its course. He is not sleeping and not eating properly because of this incident,” he said. According to his mother, the boy has been emotionally affected which has made him reserved and quiet. KwaDukuza SAPS have since arrested four suspects for allegedly assaulting the pupil. The four appeared at KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday and will appear again on Thursday. According to Glenhills principal Chicks Budhram the matter was not reported to the teachers immediately. “We were only aware after a parent told us a day after the incident occurred. Tips on being a Good Landlord SANJITH HANUMMAN

Financial Cents IN these difficult financial times one can not go by the income they receive from the salaries paid by their employer. Other means of income become necessary. With the many job cuts experience in the country people are losing their jobs. Familiesaregrowinginsizeandmuchmore is required of a breadwinner. This is where letting out your house or outbuilding be comes an option. Starting a property management com

pany is a tough business, plain and simple. Landlords deal with the problems of tenants who call to complain constantly, tenants who don’t pay their rent, and sometimes endless and very costly repairs. Buying rental property and becoming a landlord comes with a lot of stress and re sponsibilities, and all of these things can turn a wellmeaning property owner into an arrogant landlord. As a landlord, it’s easy to start viewing tenants as cash cows and money making machines, instead of building a lasting landlord/tenant relationship. But creating a good connection with your tenants and marketing yourself as a great landlord has numerous benefits. It will make working with your tenant on fixing repairs and showing the property to prospective new tenants at the end of a lease go smoother, and your tenants are more likely to renew – possibly even with a rent increase. Here are some tips to becoming a great landlord: Customise the lease You can get a

standard lease form at most stationery stores like CNA or Waltons. This will cover basic things like rent, secu rity deposit costs and any legal tenant rights. Use these basic documents as the framework for your own lease. Add in any special rules you have for the property. Use as much detail as possible and in clude everything from late payment fees to maintenance responsibility and ten ant’s behaviour. A clear cut lease will re duce friction. Knowthe lawsEachcountryhasaland lordandtenantactthatcoversrent, securi ty deposits, landlord and tenant obliga tions, tenant’s rights, and evictions. You can get a copy from the Department of Housing website. Get to know these laws well. Violating a tenant’s rights will lead to an unhappy tenant, and at worst, land you in civil court. Make those Repairs When a tenant calls with repairs, set up a time to inspect the damage. If the repair doesn’t fall into the emergency category, set up a time that

works best for the tenant. Tenants will re spect you more if you let them know ahead of time when you plan to stop by. Once you inspect the damage, schedule the repair immediately. Keep the lines of communication open While you do not want your tenant harassing you at home or calling you at all hours of the day, you do not want to cut yourself off from your tenant completely. Tenants feel more at ease when they know how to get in touch with their land lord. When a tenant moves in, give them your business number right away. Better yet, include an email address where the tenant can reach you. This will cut down on the amount of afterhours calls you get and help you keep a written record of communication be tween you and your tenant. Respect the tenant’s privacy Tenants want their privacy. In fact, several countries require that you give a tenant notice before you enter the rental property. You certainly shouldn’t abandon the

rental property altogether, especially if you suspect the tenant may have caused dam age, but let the tenant know ahead of time when you plan to stop in. Listentothetenant’sconcernsEvery property management company deals with the odd nosy neighbour, overly con cerned tenant, or cranky complainer, but most tenants won’t contact the landlord until they feel they have to. When you get a call from a tenant, listen to his concerns and do the best you can to make him feel like you addressed them. Granted, you cannot do anything about the neighbour’s lawn if that neighbour isn’t your tenant, but you can mediate a dispute between two of your own tenants. If you can do something about the problem, tell the tenant you will address it. Final Word There doesn’t have to be a huge divide be tween leaser and leasee. By taking some of these tips into consideration, you can make sure that you’re an attentive, proac tive and understanding landlord.

This “exciting news” was revealed by iLembe District Municipality mayor Welcome Mdabe at a community meeting for KwaDukuza residents in wards 16, 17 and 19 at the KwaDukuza Town Hall recently. The meeting was aimed at introducing the municipality’s new prepaid metering system to the residents. Talking about how much the resident’s debt cripplestheoperationsofthemunicipality,Mdabe said the new metering system would enable water consumers to pay particular attention to their consumption. “If this carries on (non-payment) you will all be sinking into debt and iLembe won’t be able to perform its mandate. We have people in other parts of the district that are drinking water with animals and if this goes on they will never have this basic service. This can’t go on,” said Mdabe. He added that more than R5 million was owed to iLembe by residents in ward 16, more than R8 million in ward 17 and more than R10 million in ward 19. He said the new meters will be fitted with a ‘smart’ device and consumers will then buy prepaid water from vendors like they do with electricity.

Residents will be able to punch in the numbers on their vouchers into a keypad inside their home and water will flow instantly. “Once the water you purchased runs out the device will shut down and water will stop flowing immediately. This way you will be able to include water in your household budget. The crux of the matter is we cannot bring water from the river as it is to you. It has to be purified and clean, portable water costs money. Mdabe said households would be dealt with individuallyasfaraswritingoffdebtswereconcerned. “We are asking individuals to come forward and talk to us. If you present your case in such a way that requires us to write-off your debt, we will do so,” he said. A door to door campaign will be held soon before the new meters are installed with volunteers visiting households to obtain information about the occupants as well as the old meter. “The purpose of the door to door visit is to find your household’s category. We need to know if you are indigent or affluent. Indigent’s get 10 kilolitres of free water and those earning aboveR3500getsixkilolitres.Weneedtoknow if your resident is a back room or a stand-alone property. With regards to people staying in flats, it’ll be up to landlords to decide if they want bulk meters or individual meters. We will need to see a lease agreement or a title deed depending on whether you are renting or owning the property.” .

With an initial pupil population, the enrollment is currently 232 with many on the waiting list. School principal, Kishore Hira said: “Unlike mainstream schools that focus primarily on academic progress of learners, the Stanger Training Centre is functionally orientated with the aim of training/teaching pupils to be independent in the ar-

eas of personal management, play, work and socialisation with the ultimate goal of preparing each learner for successful future employment in either sheltered workshops or the open labour market.” Hira also congratulated and thanked every member of staff, both past and present for their contributions to what the school has achieved.

OCAL service provider Sembcorp Siza Water sponsored a masonry course last week for 12 community members from various wards. The students – aged 20 to 41 – were instructed in brick laying skills through learning centre Kuyakhanya and Inchanga FET College over three weeks. The training forms the first level to a national certificate in building civil construction. The course took place at the crèche facility in Shakashead previously known as Noah. “They will now have a skill worthwhile of putting on their CV’s, and which will help them to get jobs in the construction industry,” said course facilitator Thula Zondi. Two students were picked from Wards of Etete, Nkobongo, Shakashead and Shayamoya. Tessa Duane and Thula Zondi started Kuyakhanya in 2010 and run the centre as a mobile enterprise. “We hope the course will make a difference in each of their lives. Siza has been very generous,” said Duane. Siza Water say they are proud of their social responsibility contributions, and try hard to help the North Coast community.

my people GROW

>> Local gardening initiative is so successful it will be extended provincially

A

PILOT project to feed rural schoolchildren in iLembe District has been so successful that it is going to be extended to the rest of the province in January. “It is going extremely well and is going to change rural poverty,” said Mike Newton, the head of economic development at Enterprise iLembe, the Economic Development Agency of iLembe District Municipality. The flagship project, which began in January, has already provided fresh, high-quality lunches to more than 155 000 children in some 400 rural primary, secondary and special schools in the region. The children live in some of the poorest communities in the province, and the welcome vegetable meal enables them to concentrate on their studies. As well as feeding children, the Schools Nutrition Programme is also providing a much-needed income for the 500-plus farmers and helpers - more than 1 000 in total - who are already growing the vegetables. That number will increase as further farmers are identified. Hundreds of tons of vegetables -butternut, cabbage, spinach, green beans, tomatoes and onions - have already been grown for schools by the farmers in co-operatives in the four main areas of the region: Ndwedwe, Maphumulo, Mandeni and KwaDukuza. “It is working like a charm and there are certain co-operatives that have already got more than R50 000 in their bank accounts,” said Cllr. S.W. Mdabe, Mayor of iLembe District Municipality. He said the project is achieving its aim of turning subsistence farmers into commercial farmers. As a result, the project received recognition at the Municipality Excellence Awards in 2013 in addition to scooping the Best Community Project Award for the iLembe Vineyards and Co-operative Winery. The project is being run by the local economic development agency, Enterprise iLembe, a district municipal entity. It was selected by the provincial Department of Education as it has the most advanced development agency in the province.

An Enterprise iLembe veggie project will be going provincial next year. Enterprise iLembe called in the experts from Sigma International, a Durban-based management consultancy, which specialises in implementation to assist with the roll-out of the project. Newton said that after he addressed the KZN cabinet on the progress of the scheme, it was decided to roll it out in the other 10 district municipalities throughout the province, starting in January. That will extend the programme to some two million school children in more than 5 000 schools. Several provincial government departments are involved in the

project. These include the Department of Agriculture, which provided the original vegetable seeds, and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has also actively participated. Mr. Zakhele Gumede, the Acting Chief Executive of Enterprise iLembe, says he is thrilled at the way the project has unfolded and is delighted that every district in the province will also be able to benefit from next year. “It was really started from virgin territory and is enriching the lives of

so many people,” he said. “There are a lot of new farmers involved and a lot of younger people coming in too. “It is quite satisfying.” Some of the seeds are grown in Dube Tradeport’s Agrizone and then the plants are grown on land cultivated by the farming co-operatives. The vegetables are then transported by Enterprise Ilembe to agricultural hubs-cold storage facilitieswhere 22 people have already got temporary jobs. The vegetables are packed into the correct amounts for each school and are collected by service provid-

ers who distribute them to the schools. The meals are prepared by dedicated food handlers. Enterprise Ilembe has also trained the farmers in such skills as preparing invoices, as well as the procedures in what to do to become suppliers for the school’s nutrition programme. A spin-off is that the farmers’ excess vegetables are now being sold to other customers, and the Gooderson Hotel Group is one of the commercial customers to sign up for the locally-grown vegetables.

A gift of love for Prince George NOTHANDO NDLOVU KWADUKUZA’S world renowned Tambuti wood craftsman Kuber Eadhev Singh is sending a handcrafted chair which has been upholstered with genuine leather and French polished to England’s Prince George which is expected to arrive before Christmas. Singh, who has sent various hand crafted gifts to former South African presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, King Goodwill Zwelithini, former US presidents George bush, Ronald Reagan and many others says he loves giving. “It comes naturally. I do not pick and choose,” he said. “I started working on the chair in August and told myself I would make it as a labour of love. I want that love to be visible. I am continuing with the family tradition of making handcrafted furniture for the British Royals fromTambutiwoodthatgoesbackfor many years. I have hand crafted the chair especially for baby Prince George,” he explained. “The chair has been upholstered with genuine leather, French pol-

ished however, not varnished or stained,” he continued. “My father’s family had royal links to the Royal Singh family of Agra.” He took over his father’s business after he passed away in 1972. AccordingtoSingh, hisfather, who was also a craftsman, went to Ntambanana in Northern KZN during the Second World War to look for wood that would make the best furniture. He came across the Tambuti tree, an indigenous tree which is still used to manufacture furniture. “My father stopped using Beech wood, walnut, ash wood in the Second World War as the shipping trade was disrupted and such wood was no longer imported. “This was when he made an expedition in to Zululand looking for indigenous trees that he could cut and make furniture. In 1956 he moved from Westville to KwaDukuza where he works with wood cut from Tugela and Ntambanana. The Tambuti tree is about 400500 years old. According to Singh his two sons enjoy hand crafting and will continue with the business even in his passing.

Come feel the energy ....

Mind Body Spirit

Yoga ... You've probably heard that yoga is good for you. Perhaps you have tried it and discovered that it makes you feel better, but what is yoga? Well, at SO YOGA the definition of yoga that is used more often is that of stilling the mind. With expert guidance you will learn to come back to yourself and find your limits, whilst expanding your boundaries, and being able to relax into who you are. It is about taking time to remember who you are. Their rare but unusually nice practice brings a sense of expansion in many levels and allows you to rediscover an internal sense of wholeness that in today's fastpaced world is often lost. Being off balance doesn't feel good. Feeling as though you might topple over at any time is neither safe nor comfortable. One of the reasons yoga has grown dramatically in popularity, is that it helps you to feel harmonious, integrated and complete. Yoga unwinds you, moving you from a bound -up , contracted way of existing to a more easy going, free flowing way of inter-relating. A regular practice of yoga, offers all kinds of mental and physical health benefits. It will develop awareness of your body's habitual holding patterns.

Your weak areas will grow stronger, your tight areas will become more flexible. General vitality and energy levels will improve as you unwind your body and mind and you’ll drop into relaxation more easily. The principals of yoga: THE POSTURES They re-balance the body giving you a work out with added bonus of a work-in. Exercise helps build immunity. RECENT studies show that regular exercise as well as being adjusted (joints realigned by your Chiropractor) increase your bodies ability to fight off illness. How? When we exercise, we sweat, we breathe stronger and better, and the body is con stantly releasing endorphins (good chemi cals that help to reduce our pain and make us feel better). This results in our circulation being optimal. Here, the body is able to fight off any bacteria and viruses, thereby, main taining a constantly welloxygenated flow of blood. Basically, more “good” cells are produced and these fight off all the “bad” and unwanted cells in the body. We are not meant to be SEDENTARY in dividuals. Those who live sedentary lives, in other words, those who DO NOT EXERCISE, are OVERWEIGHT, move slowly and lazily, always NEGATIVE, SAD AND DEPRESSED, have been found to be more prone to CHRONIC illnesses, with intense PAIN, and

SUFFERING. REGULAR EXERCISE reduces chances of developing TB, cancer, heart disease, diabe tes, cholesterol irregularities, osteoarthritis as well as other degenerative conditions. A brisk walk or jog 3 or 4 times a week for up to 30min will reduce your chances of devel oping illnesss. Also, studies have shown that if your joints are aligned by your chiropractor, regu larly, that this will increase the amount of “fighter” and “helper” cells released into the blood, which increases your immunity. In a study; people who were ill with the common cold, but were adjusted regularly, had their cold and flu symptoms disappear FASTER than those who were NOT treated by a Chi ropractor. Those who had fever and cold were better in approximately two days, when adjusted, as compared to up to two weeks of healing time for those who were NOTadjusted.Kindlynotethatthisdoesnot

mean that if YOU “click your bones” yourself that you will get better or increase your im munity faster. Selfclicking will increase your chances of developing conditions of degenerations such as osteoarthritis as well as create other complications. When we exercise, and Look after our bodies by getting regular checkups done, our bodies are healthy. Exercise will increase our confidence, reduce stress and heal the body. When we are happy, our bodies heal faster. BE HAPPY, AND HEAL. FOR AN AP POINTMENT CONTACT DR NATASHA SINGH. FOR A REGULAR, well structured Exer cise plan that will strengthen both BODY AND MIND, KEEP YOU STRONG AND HEALTHY, CONTACT MASTER TIMUR KURMANOV AT THE BUDO MARTIAL ART CENTRE.

Allergies in CHILDREN Understanding allergies and to reduce symptoms WHAT IS AN ALLERGY? An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a substance that's harmless to most people. But in some one with an allergy, the body's immune system treats the substance (called an allergen) as an invader and reacts inap propriately, resulting in symptoms that can be anywhere from annoying to pos sibly harmful to the person. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system of the allergic per son produces antibodies called immuno globulin E (IgE). Those antibodies then cause mast cells and basophils (allergy cells in the body) to release chemicals, including histamine, into the blood stream to defend against the allergen "invader." It's the release of these chemicals that causes allergic reactions, affecting a person's eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract as the body attempts to rid itself of the invad ing allergen. Future exposure to that same allergen (things like nuts or pollen that you can be allergic to) will trigger this allergic response again. This means every time the person eats that particu lar food or is exposed to that particular allergen, he or she will have an allergic reaction. WHO GETS ALLER GIES? The tendency to develop allergies is often hereditary, which means it can be passed down through your genes. However, just because you, your partner, or one of your children might have allergies doesn't mean that all of your kids will defi nitely get them, too. And someone usually doesn't inherit a par ticular allergy, just the likelihood of having allergies. But a few kids have allergies even if no family member is allergic. A child who is allergic to one sub stance is likely to be allergic to others as well. COMMON AIR BORNE ALLERGENS Dust mites are one of the most common causes of allergies. These microscopic in sects live all around us and feed on the millions of dead skin cells that fall off our bodies every day. Dust mites are the main allergic component of house dust, which is made up of many particles and can con tain things such as fabric fibers and bac teria, as well as mi croscopic animal aller gens. Pollen is another major cause of aller gies (most people know pollen allergy as hay fever or rose fe ver). Trees, weeds, and grasses release these tiny particles in to the air to fertilise other plants. Pollen

allergies are seasonal, and the type of pollen a child is allergic to determines when symptoms will occur. Molds, another common allergen, are fungi that thrive both indoors and out in warm, moist environments. Pet allergens from warmblooded

animals can cause problems for kids and parents alike Cockroaches are also a major house hold allergen, especially in inner cities COMMON FOOD ALLERGENS Cow's milk (or cow's milk protein). Cow's milk protein allergy (also called

formula protein allergy) means that the infant (or child or adult) has an abnor mal immune system reaction to pro teins found in the cow's milk used to make standard baby formulas, cheeses, and other milk products. Eggs. One of the most common food allergies in infants and young children, egg allergy can pose many challenges for parents. Because eggs are used in many of the foods kids eat — and in many cases they're "hidden" ingredients Seafood and shellfish. The proteins in seafood can cause a number of dif ferent types of allergic reactions. Peanuts and tree nuts. Peanuts are one of the most severe food allergens, often causing lifethreatening reactions. OTHER COMMON ALLERGENS in clude insect stings, medicines, chemicals SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS The type and severity of allergy symp toms vary from allergy to allergy and child to child. Allergies may show up as itchy eyes or an itchy nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, throat tightness, trou ble breathing, and even shock (faint ness or passing out). Symptoms can range from minor or major seasonal annoyances (for exam

ple, from pollen or certain molds) to yearround problems (from allergens like dust mites or food). For airborne allergens, symptoms in clude : sneezing, itchy nose and/or throat, nasal congestion, coughing For food allergens, symptoms include :itchy throat when ingesting that partic ular food, hives, skin rash, abdominal cramps DIAGNOSING ALLERGIES Some allergies are fairly easy to identify because the pattern of symptoms fol lowing exposure to certain allergens can be hard to miss. But other allergies are less obvious because they can masquer ade as other conditions. There are skin testing as well as blood test that can be performed to identify allegies. TREATING ALLERGIES There is no real cure for allergies, but it is possible to relieve symptoms, and re duce exposure to the allergens. Caregiver education, and commence ment of various antihistamines can help alleviate symptoms considerably. TEAM members at Toyota South Africa Motors last week celebrated as the 1 millionth proudly South African manufactured Corolla rolled of the production line at the company's Prospecton Plant in Durban, KwaZuluNatal. The white Toy ota Corolla that came off the production line last week crowns six years of successful produc tion in which the Corolla was produced in both left and right hand drive variants and exported to regions including Eastern and Western Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. "It is very symbolic that the Corolla reaches this milestone now," says Dr Johan van Zyl, Pres ident and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors. "It not only celebrates a very successful production run for the tenth generation world's favourite car, but it heralds the introduction of the new Corolla in 2014." The Corolla was first introduced in South Afri ca in 1975 and soon became South Africa's fa vourite family vehicle. It has been produced at Toyota's Prospecton plant since introduction, while its local content was gradually increased and the range widened to include left and right hand drive models for various export markets. While the 1 millionth Corolla will find pride of place next to the 1 millionth Hilux in Toyota's museum at its Sales and Marketing Head Office in Sandton the Prospecton Plant is busy prepar ing the manufacturing facility for the start of production of the new Corolla, which was re vealed at the recent Johannesburg International Motor Show in October. "The Corolla benefitted from our R8 billion investment programme (first announced in 2008), which modernised the plant and intro duced a state of the art paint plant. With the new Corolla we hope to start our next round of investment and look forward to sharing this plan when our first new generation Corolla models roll off the line," says Dr Van Zyl.

THE people have spoken, and the word is out: Land Rover’s Range Rover is their SUV of choice. In the annual People’s Wheels awards, initiated by Johannesburgbased publish ers, The Future Group, responses from ordi nary motorists are garnered with regard to the vehicles they drive or those that they as pire to drive. More than 101 400 votes and over 1 500 ownership responses were re ceived in the 2014 poll. The Range Rover Evoque (already the winner of more than 130 awards globally) added yet another by winning the SUVS and Crossovers Town and Country section with

a score of 24.71 percent. Interestingly, its cousin the Land Rover Freelander was placed second with 13.34 percent of the votes. The Range Rover Sport won the Luxury Tourers section with 14.55 percent, with its stable mate the Range Rover in second spot with 12.29 percent of the votes. Peter Biven, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa’s Marketing and Communications Director says: “We’re very proud to be held in such high regard by the motoring public of South Africa and this reinforces the esteem in which Range Rover is held. Adesh Bageloo was clean bowled by Hennop for a duck and Shaylin Govender was sent for an early shower without getting off the mark leaving the hosts in dire straits at 41/4. Akshaye Juggernath and Mukal Mishra cemented the Dawnheights innings, putting on a note-worthy 30-runs partnership for the 5th wicket (71/5) before Juggernath (12) was caught by Albertyn off the bowling of Mill. Adhil Mohan, hoping to relieve some of the matric stress, hardly spent much time at the crease after being dismissed by Mill for a solitary run. Manoj Pundit was clean bowled by Bryce van der Linde for 1 run. With the demise of Mishra for 24, Dawnheights succumbed to 80 all out in the 34th over. Bryce van der Linde was the destroyer-inchief for Amanzimtoti claiming 4/9 from 8 overs. He received good support from Mill (3/17 from 10 overs) and Hennop (3/38 from 10 overs) who grabbed 3-wickets apiece. Chasing 81 runs for victory, the visitors got off to a flying start, scoring at a rate of 5 runs per over before Albertyn (9) was clean bowled by Dawnheights skipper, Sashin Sadayan in the 5th over. With the heavy downpour at midday, it appeared as though the “rain-gods” have heard the cries of the Dawnheights players. But, within15minutestheraindisappearedbefore the visitors returned to the crease and raced to an emphatic 7-wickets victory in 11 overs. Titans win big >> Titans clinch Sanaa KO Cup WEEKLY REPORTER

N

EWLY crowned Stanger and District Volleyball Association Social League champions, Titans notched up a quick double after adding the Sanaa Knockout Cup silverware to their trophy cabinet on Tuesday night after beating former champions Darnall Action Sporting in an enthralling final played at the association courts. Titans booked their place in the final with a straight set (2-0) win against defending league champions, Teachers Style and Darnall stunned the more fancied Cool Leaders to secure their place in the final. Titans, who have lost only 2 leaguematchesfrom21leagueappearances were all over the Darnall lads like a bad rash. The “sugar-cane” lads watched in awe as the Titans trio of Lazarus Chetty, Nashlin Moodley and Dino Govender put points on the board with consummate ease. Darnallweretrailing11-21and rallied back gamely, but it was a typical case of “too little, too late” resulting in them going down 1625. Darnall returned to the courts with renewed vigour at the start of the 2nd set and looked to have the measure of the Titans outfit. Nishendran “Niknaks” Dhaver, using his superior height advantage combined superbly with playmaker Duran Moodaly to give Darnall a 18-13 lead. Brandon “Pops” Naidoo caught the Titans rearguard flatfooted with some deft touches to extend Darnall’s lead (23-19). With just 2-points needed to seal the 2nd set and claim a crucial 1-1 equalizer in the hope of pushing the game into a third setter, Darnall pressed the “self-destruct” mode button.

Trailing 19-23, Titans were forced into their 2nd timeout. The 30-seconds pep-talk gave the Glehills-based Titans outfit a new lease of life. They broke instantly after man-of-the-match, Nashlin blocked out Duran to reduce the deficit to 3-points (2023). Darnall’s lack of experience at the death was exposed by a resilient Titans outfit. Titans capitalized on Darnall’s lack of BMT (Big Match Temperament), forcing their opponents into a catalogue of unforced errors. Instead of playing percentage volleyball in the hope of forcing their opponents to commitanerror,Darnall’swayward attacking resulted in Titans leveling the scores at 23-23 before advancing to match-point (2423). Darnall’s 6th successive attempt to snatch a point (and levelthescoresat24-24)wasfoiled afterDuran’sattackfrompower was superbly blocked by Nashlin to give Titans a memorable 25-23 win and their first taste of victory in the Sanaa K.O. Cup. Meanwhile, Style’s hopes of securing a podium finish was dented after they slumped to a humiliating 17-25; 28-26; 7-15 defeatatthehandsofCoolLeaders in the 3rd/4th playoffs. President of SDVA, Isaac Abraham expressed his sincere thanks to the Nazir Khan family for their generous R5 000 sponsorship. Prize-money will be awarded to all social league teams at the SDVA awards banquet scheduled for Friday, December 13 at the KwaDukuza Town Hall.
