INDELANI Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor Jabulani Sibiya said the KwaDukuza Municipality is a ‘family’ business that only employs ANC members while many of his ward members are unemployed.

Sibiya’s remarks come after 68 ‘disgruntled’ Lindelani residents joinedtheIFPlastweek, claimingthat the ANC KwaDukuza branch ‘failed’ to meet their needs. However, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu says this is not the case as Sibiya is employed by the municipality. iLembe IFP councillor Kas Anamalay welcomed the residents.

“The political situation being fluid is prompting people to move from one party to another with the hope of following specific people in the areas who are service-delivery oriented.

“We are going to see more of this in the next election.”

He said he was grateful for the hard-working IFP councillors in the

area who are doing, ‘exactly what the country needs to fight poverty’.

However, KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu denied these allegations, saying that the municipality advertises posts which give all residents an equal opportunity to apply.

He said that council was concerned about the unemployment rate and initiated many service delivery programmes to educate and create job opportunities regardless of political affiliation.

Lindelani resident, Constance Khumalo, said: “My family did not have a proper house and I was unemployed. All [the ANC] gave me was empty promises. I now have a job and shelter for my family thanks to Sibiya.”

Victor Biyela, also from Lindelani, said he appreciates the ward councillor’s hard work to ensure that the residents are safe and that their needs are met. Biyela is confined to a wheelchair after incorrect surgery was done when he was admitted to hospital for a problem with his foot.

“I struggled, but I could walk, but that is not the case now.

“I’ve been seeking help from 2006 as I should have been compensated for this, but nobody from the ANC helped me.”

BiyelasaidSibiyahasensuredthat his family is safe by installing burglar guards in their home.

Responding to Biyela’s claims, Mthembu said the municipality built Biyela a home and added that Sibiya works for the municipality, which is governed by the ANC. “We are happy that Sibiya is doing a good job in his ward. However, what does not make sense is that there are people who are saying that the ANC is not doing their job. The ward is run by an IFP councillor who works for the KwaDukuza Municipality.

“The people who say they were ANC members should have proof that they are card carrying members of the ANC. The municipality is dedicated to serving KwaDukuza as a whole regardless of the political party they

MRS staff in the iLembe District will take to the streets on Friday August 30 again, demanding answers from the DepartmentofHealthregardingtheirworking conditions.

This was announced at an arbitration meeting last Tuesday at the SADTU Park near the KwaDukuza Clinic.

More than 500 EMRS personnel from across the province attended.

Spokesperson for the EMRS staff, Sifiso Dlamini questioned why EMRS personnel have to work an extra 13 unpaid hours before they can claim overtime.

“While personnel are obliged to work 160 hours a month and anything over this should be overtime, staff are forced to work 173 hours a month before being eligible for overtime.

“We handed our grievances over to the department in December last year, but they failed to resolve our grievances,” said Dlamini.

However, the Public Sectoral Bargaining Council commissioner, Bheki Khumalo resolved that both parties have to come to an agreement because EMRS is an essential service. “The department and EMRS personnel will have to meet within 30 days and discuss their grievances,” said Bheki.

He said the department has agreed to sit with the employees and resolve the issue.

Dlamini asked the community to bear with them during the one-day strike on Friday.

‘The community needs to know, this is our only way of applying pressure on the department, so they can react,” said Dlamini.

The minibus that allegedly knocked over Innocent Mpungose

Student killed by minibus AN uMfolozi College student from Mandeni campus, was hit and killed by a minibus transporting college students between Mandeni and Kingfisher road on Tuesday morning.

Innocent Mpungose (22) died at the scene.

He was heading to campus when the white minibus knocked him as he was crossing the road.

Mpungose was a level four electrical engineering student.

According to police, it is believed that the minibus had exceeded the speed limit which is 60km/h in the area.

Mpungose sustained injuries to his head. A case of culpable homicide has been opened.

Accused killers behind bars NOTHANDO NDLOVU FIVE suspects who are allegedly linked to a case of murder and attempted murder appeared at Umhlali Periodical Court on Monday, 26 August.

Samkele Fodo (20), Thembinkosi Mkhize (49), Thandisizwe Mafuna (29), Ntongola Mazwi (27), Thabo Mgidi (27) were arrested on Monday last week by the Umhlali SAPS. They are suspected of stabbing a 38-yearold woman and her daughter. The woman later died in hospital and her daughter was discharged.

The Weekly learned that the incident took placeon13July atabout5am, whenthemother and daughter were on their way to the train station at Compensation in Shakashead.

According to Umhlali SAPS media liaison officer Captain Percy Buthelezi, the suspects were armed with knives and firearms.

He said they demanded cash from the women. An undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone was taken from the victims.

The case was remanded to 3 September.

WADUKUZA Municipality has become a member of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI).

ICLEI is punted as the world’s leading association of cities and local governments dedicated to sustainable development.

The ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability Association is a powerful movement of 12 mega-cities, 100 super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities as well as 450 small and medium-sized cities in 84 countries.

The association aims to build tangible improvements in global sustainability by placing special focus on environmental conditions through cumulative local actions.

The membership was declared 10 months after the municipality had tabled an application to be part of the seven cities with the strongest economic potential.

Municipalities were selected to participate in the programme known as Low Carbon Emission Programme that is run by the ICLEI. KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu welcomed the decision, saying that the municipality is raising the bar in terms of social sustainability.

“We are gearing up for mammoth tasks ahead on our way towards fulfilling Vision 2030.

“This achievement on its own speaks to the fact that we are on track

towards meeting our long-term objectives.”

He said this clearly shows that the municipality is moving to become a vibrant city competing in the global village economically, socially, and politically, in a sustainable manner.

TheICLEIstatusallowsKwaDukuza to work on various climate change response programmes.

As part of this accreditation, the municipality will be supported to develop its first greenhouse gas inventory, which is currently under way, and also contribute to staff and councillor’s capacity building programmes.

Mother arrested for ordering hit THE KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team together with members from Port Shepstone Crime Intelligence arrest-

ed a 50-year-old woman for conspiring to kill her two sons.

Makhosazana Dorothy Langeni (50) appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, on two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

KZN police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said Langeni approached a relative who had recently been released from prison and asked him to kill her two sons.

The “hit man” who said he could not bear the thought of returning to

jail, tipped off the police about the plot. It is believed that Langeni conspired since May to kill her sons, Nkazimulo (21) and Nkanyiso (24).

The hit was reported to the Port Shepstone SAPS who also roped in members from Crime Intelligence.

Brigadier Derek Captain Hastibeer, who spearheaded the operation, set up a meeting on Wednesday 14 August between Langeni and a police official posing as the hit-man and details of the plot to kill her sons were discussed.

“The price of each murder was R25 000, but she requested a discount because she was giving the hitman two jobs. Langeni also promised him three more jobs should he pull these two off successfully.

“The alleged motive for the killing was that she wanted to claim on insurance policies she had taken out on her sons.

“Terms were agreed on and on Tuesday, 2 August she promised to provide the hit-man with photos to enable him to identify her sons,” he

said.

Hastibeer went on to say during the meeting the woman handed over photos of her sons as well as R350 for expenses. After the exchange, police arrested Langeni and found her in possession of insurance documents and four other identity documents.

EMOCRATIC Alliance (DA) leader, Helen Zille attended the party’s fundraising dinner in Ballito recently.

Zille was upbeat about the upcoming general elections and said the DA would win the Western Cape with an increased majority.

“We will also win Gauteng. According to our research we have increased our support base in all other provinces.”

Motivating those present, Zille added: “Our target is 30 per cent of the national votes. It requires a lot of hard work to meet the target. We have a comprehensive plan and election after election we have succeeded with our strategy since 1994.

“Millions of people are beginning to see the DA as the only alternate to the ANC. The DA’s record of gover-

nance is better in Western Cape, City of Cape Town and many other municipalities that we govern.”

She said according to political analysts the ANC could lose up to 10 percent of support.

Zille called upon the youth to register and vote saying: “The future is in your hands. The election outcomes dependonyou.Theborn-freeswill be voting for the first time, that makes up a sizeable number,” said Zille.

DA iLembe constituency chairperson, councillor Madhun Sing said the target of 30 percent is achievable looking at new political developments.

“By-election results and the political trend across the country have shown a substantial difference and we are very confident.”

Research tells us that subtle cues are in our environment MOST people would like to think that they are in charge of how much they eat. We trust our bodies to tell us when we’re full, and after we’re done, we have a good sense of how much we've eaten.

If only it were true.

“Research tells us that subtle cues in our environment can pressure us to dish up more than we need and eat more than we should,” said Luigi Gratton, MD, vice president of medical affairs at Herbalife.

“Larger plates – even larger serving utensils – can prompt over-consumption.”

So, how much we eat is generally decided before we even take that first mouthful. The reality is we pretty much eat whatever we’re served – whether it’s a little or a lot. From a supersized fast-food meal to a dainty portion in an upscale restaurant, we’re generallysatisfiedaslongaswe'vepolishedoffevery morsel. Rather than letting our stomachs decide, we let an empty plate signal an end to the meal.

Controlling how much you put on your plate really becomes the first step in controlling how much you put in your stomach. But other cues can trigger overeating, too. Just smelling or seeing food – anything from the smell of fresh-baked bread to the sight of stale donuts in the company lunchroom – can trigger your desire to eat, even if you’re not hungry. Here are some ways to take charge: Think spoon, not shovel - It’s an old trick, but it really works - using smaller plates and tall, skinny glasses gives the illusion that there is more food on the dish and more to drink in the glass. Smaller serving utensils help keep you from loading up, too – think spoon, rather than shovel.

Single-serving sizes - As serving containers get larger, so do portions. Those huge bargain-priced cereal boxes may be leaner on your wallet, but studies show you will pour yourself a lot more cereal – as much as 20 percent more than you would from aregular-sizedpackage.Goforthesingle-servingsizes.

Out-of-reach sweets - Make it inconvenient to eattheunhealthystuff.Youmaynotmaketheeffort to bake brownies from scratch when the mood strikes, but if you keep the microwavable version around you’ll have to constantly fight the urge. Get the candy dish off your desk and the cookie jar off the counter – set out a bowl of fruit instead.

Mix it up, but not too much - Studies show that the more variety on your plate, the more you’ll eat – all that stimulation keeps your taste buds in high gear. An array of low-cal fruits and veggies is fine, but when faced with a buffet or a dinner served family-style, limit yourself to just a couple of items on your plate at one time.

What are some of the challenges you face as a woman in your job/ life?

Coming from having absolutely nothing to begin my ministry, but putting God first and trusting Him to meet the needs of His people.

What has been your greatest achievement as a woman?

Serving God, trusting Him and caring for His people and trying to counsel people, being more a mother than a pastor to both young and old.

What one rule do you live by?

Love! Whatever I do and have done is because of love. That has been my only motive in my ministry.

What can you say to encourage women to work harder and do better?

Always move forward, because looking back can arrest your progress in life.

Forget about the past, trust God and look to the future.

How did you spend Women's Day? I was at the Women's Day Celebration - organised and celebrated by the Stanger Women's Forum.

Women's Day is about courage, resolve and taking action.

Good things don't come easy. In the beginning my construction company faced problems. But unsuccessful attempts represent learning curves for me.

My greatest achievement has been raising my two sons Denzil and Magashan Govender into two refined and successful young men.

Don't give up on your dreams. I refused to believe I couldn't make it.

Be persistent, some journeys are very painful but it's in failing that you find out what you were meant to be.

1What can you say to encourage women to work harder and do better?

Have passion for what you do. There's no easy way to succeed, hard work is the only answer. Women should participate in the economy to improve their earning potential, enabling families to move out of poverty and contribute to the overall economy.

Siyaya Windows and Doors was born out of husband and wife team, Kovilyn and Reshmee Chetty five years ago. The joint owners and business partners first formed the company in 2005, but only on paper! Three years later, they made their dream a reality and decided to establish a factory to manufacture and retail Meranti windows, doors and door frames.

House robbery suspects told to ‘beware’ NOTHANDO NDLOVU UMHLALI SAPS have issued a stern warning to criminal involved in house breakings and those who have a ‘tendency’ to buy stolen goods.

Speaking to the Weekly on Monday, Umhlali SAPS media liaison

officer, Captain Percy Buthelezi said all those who are linked to house robbery cases will be arrested by December this year.

Buthelezi said members of the Shakaville 'one minute gang' who are suspected of seven cases of house robberies in Collin Drive, Salt Rock were arrested on Friday last week.

Bongani Cele (26), Joe Milambo (22) and African Zulu (27) appeared in court yesterday (Tuesday).

Buthelezi said through investigation the police discovered that the gang members hired metered taxis to rob various houses. He added that the police recovered two plasma TV screens.

“We urge the community to liaise

with the police and not to hide anything from us. We urge you not to buy stolen goods. “ To those who have been involved in house robberies, it would be better to hand yourselves over.

“The Umhlali SAPS are working hard to make arrests in all the cases of house robberies opened,” warned Buthelezi.

N armed man who tried to rob and killlocalbusinessman,VRSubbanof Temple Grove on Tuesday afternoon last week, was arrested the next morning after hiding in a secret chamber for the night.

Lasio Byebisho, a Ugandan national, andhisaccomplicewererentingthebasement on Subban’s property. They broke the wall which leads to the main building to gain entrance.

According to Darren Sewram of Ultimate Security, the suspects ransacked the house and found the safe.

“TheywaitedforSubbantoarrivefrom work. When he entered the house, the robbers pounced on him and forced him to open the safe. However, Subban put up a fight and was wrestled to the ground.

One of the robbers had a huge knife and threatened to kill him if he refused to open the safe.

“Fortunately, the alarm went off. The suspect with the knife escaped through the front door. The second suspect, Byebisho, ran towards the basement.”

Sewram was first on the scene and searched the house and the basement.

However, Byebisho could not be found.

The police were also called. They also searched the house to no avail.

“I told Subban not stay in house that night. The following morning, I contacted Inspector NK Naidoo of the KwaDukuza SAPS and together we searched the house again.

“When we entered the basement, we found a dark room with a shrine in the centre and bottles with animal organs inside. Upon investigation, I discovered on one side of the room, the wall was made of timber. I broke the boards and found Byebisho hiding. The timber was approximately500cmspacedfromthewall,”said Sewram.

A firearm and live ammunition were recovered in Byebisho's possession.

He was handed to the KwaDukuza SAPS and charged for armed robbery and attempted murder. A search has been launched for the second suspect.

Byebisho appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last week and was remanded in custody.

Agri-hub projects help community MERVYN KRISHNA ILEMBE District Municipality councillors visited various Local Economic Development (LED) projects initiated by Enterprise iLembe throughout the district on, Wednesday last week.

Theaimofthevisits was to review the progress made on the agri-hub projects implemented in Mandeni, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe and KwaDukuza municipalities.

Enterprise iLembe acting chief executive officer, Zakhele Gumede said Enterprise does not operate in a vacuum, thus the visits served as an accountability platform to councillors who are the main stakeholders and the voice of the people.

“The visits were aimed at giving feedback on the projects the enterprise has implemented at communitylevel,andtoensure that there is a fair level of understanding of the work and progress that has be done by the enterprise,” said Gumede.

Councillor Thabisile Cele said the South African government has ensured that people

in rural communities take priority when it comes to service delivery because they were previously marginalised.

“As iLembe we are committed to improving the lives of rural people in the district, and it’s amazing to see that these people with just the littlehelpfromiLembeDistrictMunicipalityare running households from the profits made from these community based projects.”

Velisiwe Chonco of Sakhisizwe Co-operative in Maphumulo said the co-operative has helped alleviate hunger and instilled a sense of business acumen in the people.

“We are a group of pensioners, and we do everything ourselves, we have made over R50 000 from this venture, and we would like to thankiLembeDistrictMunicipalityforcontinuing to give us the necessary support structure to ensure that we grow and develop our skills.”

The Agri-Hubs project has created over 140 direct and 60 indirect jobs.

A number of vegetables have been harvested. These are currently being sold to Food Lovers Market, Spar and Durban Fresh Produce Markets.

Convention Jehovah’s Witnesses in Durban and along the North Coast have planned their annual convention and an accompanying campaign and are encouraging people to attend.

This years convention theme is “God's Word Is Truth!” which commenced in the United States in May and will continue worldwide until the end of December.

It is estimated that more than 7 000 delegates will attend the English-language convention at Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium from 6 to 8 September and that a further 13 000 will attend the Zululanguage convention from 13 to 15 September for the Bible-based programmes.

JR Brown, spokesman for the Witnesses said the convention theme this year is significant because it underscores a core family value for Jehovah's Witnesses.

“Witness families embrace the Bible as the most trustworthy guide and source of advice in these troubledtimes.Andwefeelthatthe public will likewise benefit from and enjoy the varied and practical programme.”

He said some of the highlights is the 'intriguing' talk entitled “What Is Truth” and will examine why we can trust God's Word, the Bible.

Two dramatic plays will be presented that will bring Bible stories and their lessons to life.

A 'Visitors Registration' table will be at all entrances to welcome visitors and supply them with Bibles and songbooks. There is no admission fee. Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported entirely by voluntary donations.

Community believes demonic attacks cause suicides

THE excitement of changing your Facebook relationship status to 'in a relationship' is probably one of the most exciting events for teenagers.

Or maybeit'sthefactthatyounow have someone to spend your time with, share your thoughts with and be with; someone who allows you to be the 'carefree' person you're meant to be.

No matter who he or she is, as teenagers, how do we know that our high school sweetheart is actually meant to be with us forever?

That'sthecatch,wedon'tactually know and only time can tell how our relationships will evolve.

Of course, teenagers tend to take the whole relationship 'stage' a bit too seriously, especially between the ages of 14 and 17, which is the inspiration behind this column.

A few weeks ago I was shopping

in a well known clothing store in KwaDukuza when I noticed a girl and her boyfriend shopping there too.

I actually know the girl by face and name, plus I also know that she is a grade 10 pupil.

She didn't really notice me because she was too busy shopping

with her boyfriend (also in grade 10), however something caught my eye and suddenly a huge shock hit me.

Her boyfriend had her name tattooed on his wrist. Yes, a 15 year old boy had tattooed his girlfriend's name on his wrist.

As much as I could say it's sweet and thoughtful to do something like tattoo the name of your loved one on yourself, it's also permanent and will stay with you for the rest of your life.

As far as high school sweethearts are concerned, the reality is that only a few people actually end up with the person who they dated in high school because they simple grow up and meet new people.

However, I also know a couple who have been together since high school and have been happily married for many years!

I REFER to Baboo Singh’s (PR Councillor) letter to the editor dated 23/08/2013.

My question to Mr Singh is this: How many Indian, White and Coloured councillors does the ANC have in the KwaDukuza Municipality and iLembe Region?

The majority of the ratepayers are Indian and white. If one looks at KwaDukuza, there are no real industries that the ANC has promoted or created jobs within.

Indians and whites have been sidelined in the KwaDukuza ANC region. They are not being promoted or given opportunities. As a result the town is not progressing. If

one has to question business people in the area, one will find they are having a tough year and it is not going to get any better.

Mr Bhamjee is definitely correct as Indians are being marginalised.

It is the duty and privilege of the media to report, and fairly. The paper, in doing so has awakened many of the Indians who have not been oblivious to this.

Please answer this question, Mr Singh: Are the current ANC councillors going out and assisting business people in these difficult times that we are living in?

More on KwaDukuza gatekeeping BABOO Singh'sletterlast week was a laugh. Objective journalism means taking the real news to the people. As a reader I am thankful for the information provided in the Weekly.

As for allegations of “half-baked stories and biased reporting” the only bias in those articles is towardsthereader, who has the right to know what is happening in the town whether the president or the king is in town.

The Weekly must be commended for such forthright reporting. I was present at recent meetings where the invited comrades of the ANC lambasted those Indian councillorswho are blocking the majority of the Indian community from joining the ANC. It is glaring that gate-keeping does exist in KwaDukuza. Whenever there is an ANC event, our socalled Indian councillors are tasked with inviting the Indian community.

However, only a select few are invited. We, the comrades of the ANC who have been foot-soldiers for so many years are being shutout. Many of us do not get invited.

What does this tell you?

It is evident the gate-keepers are scared of the real Indian stalwarts that support the ANC, that they make every attempt not to invite them to meetings, surrounding themselves rather with family and friends.

The gate-keepers have given the ANC region the impression that they carry the support of the Indian community. That is not so; if they did, then how come we have two ANC Indian councillors living in Stanger Manor for more than 20 years, but the ANC has never ever won the ward. If we want the ANC membership to grow, then the ANC must act now against the Indian “gate-keepers”.

IN response to councillor Baboo Singh’s letter dated 23 August 2013, I wish to point out that Mr. Singh was appointed by the ANC as a councillor to represent the people of the KwaDukuza Municipality.

When the Stanger Weekly published the “Indians marginalised by ANC ‘gatekeepers’” article on 2 August 2013, one would have expected that Mr Singh as councillor would call a public meeting to find out the grievances of those affected.

Instead he shot the messenger, who is the journalist of the Stanger Weekly, and made bold allegations against the Stanger Weekly’s journalism ethics.

It is however interesting to note that despite Mr Singh's allegations, the Stanger Weekly followed the proper ethics of journalism in publishing his critical letter about the paper.

So to answer your question, is this objective reporting, I think yes!

The regional branch of the ANC must investigate the matter as it is in the best interest of the ANC to do so.

In doing so it must hold any other Indian councillor to account on this particular issue.

It is glaring that “Gate-keeping in the ANC exists in KwaDukuza.”

With the upcoming elections, we as Indian activists and veterans of the ANC want to assist the ANC in increasing its support base, if the “gates” are open for us to do so it will have a significant impact on achieving our objectives.

We have to reassure the Indian community that they have a place in the sun in South Africa.

We are all equal - some more I READ the article in Stanger Weekly page nine dated 23 August 2013 "Education for economic freedom" with interest.

The words from mayor Ricardo Mthembu "economic freedom will not fall from the moon" tends to contradict what is happening in our wards with regards to these kinds of projects.

Some wards are not involved while some are represented by more than the required amount of participants.

These projects need to be made known to the public because they are there to help us, but those in power do otherwise.

We, the youth of Thembeni area ward 11, were never informed of this project, but there are people from the area who were recruited and the question is how were they picked?

This initiative is for underprivileged youth, we all deserve equal opportunities.

Those in power within our ward are

really abusing their right to pick who is going to participate in certain projects.

They choose their friends and relatives; nepotism at its best.

This does not only happen in this project; we the public of Thembeni are not made aware of any rising opportunities.

Truth be told, to be considered for any arising opportunity you have to be in the ANC ward committee, then you are sure to be hired as a municipal worker.

Those who were recently chosen to bepartofthenext40todo the six months course, were told to bring whoever wants to study because only 21 pitched up on the first day. Why is that so? Because these things are not made known to the public.

This is so disgusting; it will bring the name of the ANC and the KwaDukuza Municipality into disrepute.

It has to stop, we all need chances.

Concerned Thembeni Youth

Corruption rules democratic SA CRIME is crime, no matter how big or small it is. Corruption is a serious crime.

We cannot justify corruption. The trend of applying leniency to corrupt leaders in ourhardearneddemocracy is immoral and disgraceful.

Yet, I am shocked when ordinary citizens are involved in corruption, they are fired and even go to jail.

But, when government officials steal from the public purse, which is meant to benefit the poor, they are rewarded.

Some high ranking ANC ministers were involved in corruption,somejailed and then privileged and freed whilst the ordinary citizen rots in jail.

Former Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale out-performed all the other premiers when it came to corruption, yet he was rewarded with a call-up to parliament.

Dina Pule communications minister, abused millions of taxpayers’ money.

She was found guilty by the ethics com-

mittee, but instead of being kicked out of parliament, she only forfeited a months’ salary and kept her job.

I think the punishment handed down to Pule is too lenient.

Our tax money is being wasted while many South Africans are still suffering.

These people in parliament need to realise they are in those seats because of our votes.

For Nelson Mandela's sake, when will our government stop recycling corrupt officials and start handing out proper punishment to offenders?

After 20 years of democracy we are supposed to be teaching our future leaders of clean governance, but this country is starting to look like Zimbabwe.

For government to regain the trust of the electorate, one of the first steps is to deal decisively with corruption.

“It is cool to be an artisan” ON 14 August 2013, I had an opportunity to be invited by the iLembe District Municipality to the certification and induction ceremony at the UMfolozi FET College Groutville.

Forty learners were being certificated by the college for having completed a plumbing course and a further cohort of 40 learners were being inducted to the college . This is the spin off from iLembe District Municipality’s investment of R1.2 billion on the construction of the Lower Tukela bulk water project.

Through this project, in the long run, every resident within KwaDukuza Municipality will have proper sanitation and thus avoiding the “poo wars” as we see them in Cape Town.

Whilst this is an excellent provision of service to our people by the District Municipality, I could not help but marvel how in the process, iLembe has been able to deal with the paucity of skills and empowerment of youth in the area.

Through this project, 40 unemployed young learners have been given a head start in life.

They have now gained skills andknowledgewhichtheycanuse anywhere across various sectors .

As they were unemployed and faced a bleak future , they now have increased chances of getting better paying jobs. Already those who were certificated have been placed within the same Lower Tukela bulk water project to do their practicals and are being stipended.

According to the reports given by the college the students themselves did not disappoint as they displayed exceptional commitment to their training. They hardly missed a day and virtually all those who enrolled completed their course.

This is a clear demonstration by learners that hard work and commitment does pay off no matter what environment you are in.

It is also a clear commitment by The iLembe District Municipality to the skills development agenda.

Needless to say that KwaDukuza Municipality also has a youth mass skilling programme which involved 40 learners as well.

This newly acquired qualification by learners is also a confidence booster to them. I saw them walking tall and holding their heads high as they approached the podium to receive their certificates.

All 40 learners were also presented with two books each Life without Limits and Unstoppable, both by Nick Vujicic which are inspiring books by an extra-ordinary man who was born without limbsbutwasabletoovercomehis disability. I am certain that once thelearnershavereadthesebooks their lives will never be the same again.

The ball is now firmly in the court of the learners. All I can say to them indeed “it is cool to be an artisan”.

Stop the animal cruelty >> Export meat rather than live animals - NSPCA

T

HE National Council of SPCAs is calling for public support for their campaign to stop the outmoded, unacceptable and cruel practice of exporting live animals by sea for barbaric slaughter. The NSPCA has opposed this practice which was highlighted on two occasions on the MNET actuality programme Carte Blanche when stark footage of the harsh reality and the suffering of animals was broadcast, on both occasions to a public outcry.

Public support is required to strengthen their stance and is aimed at lobbying the Department of Tourism, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) as well

as Border Control and other relevant authorities. The NSPCA’s stance has previously been conveyed in writing as well as in discussions with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

There are alternates: exporting meat rather than live animals is preferable.

InastatementtheNSPCAsaid:“Information has been received that a ship is due to be loaded with cattle in August 2013 destined for Mauritius.

We call upon all compassionate people to make your voices heard. Our aim is to prevent the ship from docking and export permits from being signed. The NSPCA is now openly

stating that criminal charges will be laidagainstanyveterinarianwhether state-appointed or otherwise who signs the export permits.”

According to the statement over and above the “travelling time”, it can take at least two days to load the animals and two days to off-load them.

“There is no guarantee on how long vessels will be at sea. There can be breakdowns, including generator failure, which cause delays, as well as the effect of inclement weather and rough seas.

The nine-member team of pupils and two teachers was named the top school in the iLembe District last month and the Durban Region last Thursday.

The school walked away with R21 000 in total, R6 000 and R15 000 for winning the district and Durban Regional respectively.

The pupils received certificates, bags and trophies.

The team is made up of teachers, T Gopal andAjaySahadew,pupilsPrestonPadayachee, Bianca Hardcastle, Caitlen Komal, Sinothile Khuzwayo, Wonke Masuku, Abigail Coetzee and Samir Sahadeo.

Team member, Padayachee said they had to identify road safety problems in their communities including the lack of pedestrian crossings, scholar patrols, humps and road markings, lack of warning signs cautioning motor-

ists about blind and deaf pedestrians in the areas, speeding, unlicensed and under-aged drivers, lack of street lights for visibility at night, stray animals, potholes, overgrown vegetation, depleted speed humps, illegal dumping on pavements and drinking and driving.

“We then had to find solutions to the problems. We created a hi-tech model in which we hadtomakea30minutepresentation,”saidPadayachee.

He added they hoped to bring the provincial championship trophy to KwaDukuza.

School principal, Chix Budhram said he was impressed by the dedication showed by the pupils in solving the problem that had been affecting their school for many years.

“It’s very encouraging that a school that caters for the underprivileged community emerged as winner against urban schools,” said Budhram. He said what was inspiring was that the pupil’s vision will save the lives of other children from surrounding schools.

“Ourschoolsareclosetoabusytransportintersection. Many pupils have been knocked down by cars while trying to cross the road.

“As principal, I am thrilled about the result.”

TANGER Manor Secondary were crowned iLembe under 17 cricket champions after beating Sabuyaze High School of Maphumulo in the final of the Ilembe District Games (hosted by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation) played at the Manor Primary School Ground on Friday.

Manor won the toss and elected to field first. Sabuyaze openers Sipho and Menzi frustrated the Manor bowlers with some brilliant cover drives before Sipho was run out for nine runs (which included two 4s) in the fourth over. In the next over Menzi was clean bowled

by Saieshan Logenathan for six runs.

With the demise of their openers, wickets tumbled at regular intervals resulting in the visitors being bundled out for 44 runs in the 18th over. Siphele wastheonlybatsmantoofferanyresis-

tance top scoring with 12 runs which included two boundaries.

Spinner Irshaad Moolla was the pick the Manor bowlers claiming 2/2 from two overs. Shrivaan Singh grabbed 2/6 from four overs.

Chasing 45 runs for victory from 20 overs, pinch hitter Sayuren Perumal was promoted up the order to open the batting with Zaks Ganie. Sayuren (27 not out which included four sixes and a four) and Zaks (17 runs which included four 4’s) guided Manor to a comfortable 9-wickets victory in the third over.

Coach of the Manor outfit, R Chakuwa was full of praise for his charges who impressed with both bat and ball.

In the under-13 final, Manor Primary trounced Sogidi Primary School of Ndwedwe by 10-wickets.

UNIOR Stars snatched a thrilling 2-1 win against Townview in a SAFAKwaDukuzaLocalFootball Association (KLFA) First Division League game played at the Manor Ground on Sunday.

Stars dominated possession in the first quarter and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities. In the 12th minute Sizwe Mbatha beat the offside trap with a late burst of speed, but his brilliant effort was dramatically parried out for a corner by the alert Townview keeper.

In the 20th minute Skhumbuzo Mdingi broke free on the right flank before weaving his way into the box with some fancy footwork. But, instead of crossing the ball to the unmarked Mbatha, he (Mdingi) selfishly took a shot at goal, hitting the sidenetting.

Both teams failed to break the deadlock going into the break. Stars coach Mzwandile Ndlale did not mincehiswordsduringthebreakand urged the lads to put away the chances they created in the hope of returning home with maximum points.

Barely 10 minutes into the second half, Stars were caught on the counter-attack, and despite a gallant attempt by their keeper, Mzwandile

SST clinched the EZE’S Electrical Knockout Cup (hosted by Stanger and District Volleyball Association) after trouncing Randsons in straight sets in the final played beforealargecrowdattheassociation courts on Thursday night.

Randsons were chasing shadows throughout the night and battled to gel together as an organised unit.

KSST, who have good and bad resultssincethestartofthe2013season, weredeterminedtorestorethefaithof their legion of supporters using the week preceding the tournament.

They started with a training session at both an indoor and outdoor

venue in the hope of getting their act together.

The training sessions proved to be pivotal with Carnel Joseph, Lionel Jali and Cameron Singh combining superbly to give KSST an unassailable 17-10 lead.

Despite the two regulatory timeouts, Randsons battled to outwit their youthful and strong opponents who cantered to a fluent 25-11 win in the opening set.

Randsons took a surprising 4-2 lead at the start of the second half, but the lead was short-lived after Damien “Shrek” Peters combined superbly with setter Sherwin Daniel to overcome the deficit and give KSST a 12-6 lead.

ILEMBE High Schools Cricket Association will host a girls’ under 17 cricket tournament on Thursday, 29 August at Stanger Manor Secondary School commencing at 11am.

Matches will be played on a knock out basis. The duration of each game will be 10 overs per side. Each team must have a minimum of five bowlers with each bowler allowed to bowl a maximum of two overs.

Girls born in 1996/1997 or later will be eligible to participate in the tournament. Schools are not permitted to combine with other schools in the hope of strengthening their squad.

Schoolswhocombinewillnot be allowed to participate in the event.

The winning school will represent the iLembe District at the KwaZulu-Natal Schools Sports Festival in Durban in September Co-ordinator of the tournament, R Chakuwa said: “All secondary schools in the Ilembe District should take advantage of the opportunity afforded to girls.

“The winning school will not only be able to showcase their talent at the provincial tournament, but success in Durban will earn the school the right to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Schools Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Bloemfontein in December”.
